Q3: What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media
product and why?
Having already thoroughly researched a number
of magazines and media institutions in
preparation for my music magazine, I have been
able to identify several ways my product could be
distributed.
Companies such as Bauer Media Group and Time Inc. Uk
sell magazines similar to my own…
Time Inc. Uk sells NME which is sold weekly
and Uncut.
Bauer Media sells MOJO and
Q which are both sold
monthly.
All of these magazines are being sold in the same
market as my own will be and so this means that
they are all in competition with my magazine.
These magazines
are all
indie/alternative
music magazine and
are of similar prices
meaning my
magazine will have
to stand out in order
to be noticed in the
market compared to
the classics such as
NME which has been
They will have similar content due to the fact that they
are of the same genre, however, my magazine will
appeal more to a different group of people in the target
audience seeing as different groups of people may
choose monthly or weekly magazines and I want to
appeal to that set of people who buy monthly magazines
Seeing as NME is sold weekly, there is less chance that it will be
any sort of threat to the sale of my own magazine as mine is
planned to sell monthly.
Time Inc. Uk also sells Uncut, a monthly music
magazine meaning the company may not want to
distribute my magazine which is also a monthly
magazine.
Another magazine similar to my own in the market is
Rolling Stone magazine. This magazine is published Bi-
weekly and is the only music magazine sold by Wenner
Media. By using this company to sell my magazine I will
be filling gaps in the market and the company’s sales as
monthly magazines are incredibly popular.
I also think that this company will
be good for my magazine because
the brand is already well known
because of the popular Rolling
Stone magazine which is
distributed by Wenner Media and
so people may try my magazine as
I decided to choose the Wenner Media to sell my
magazine as I believe that a monthly music
magazine will help the company well as they
currently don’t have one.

Not only have I researched companies selling
music magazines similar to my own but I
have also found numerous other shops,
including supermarkets, which are
appropriate places to sell my product. These
include; WH Smith, ASDA, Tesco, News
agents, and Music Shops.
These shops are
spread
throughout the
country and so
are easy for my
target audience
to access.
Seeing as my target audience is for ages 16-35 the majority of these
people may have a job or may need to buy their own groceries at
university or at their own home and supermarkets such as these
appeal to my target audience. This is because the supermarkets are
also competing against one another for their target market and to do
this they make products cheaper in their stores meaning my target
audience can buy more and hopefully meaning they can buy my
magazine.
Also, the vast majority of people in my target audience use smart phones or own tablets
and so by making sure subscriptions and e-magazines are available to buy and view
online, my magazine is easier for them to access and read. This is important as making it
more easily accessible to them during their busy schedules will encourage them to buy
the magazine again.
