Exceptional performance is defined by
what is relevant in our industry
• Is that about the consequence of decisions or
discovery?
• Decisions motivate you to buy stuff
• Discovery teaches you to shift from simply
seeing where to allocate resources / your time
to seeing the problem that impedes efforts
and then solving them in a disciplined manner
and sharing what has been discovered with
other people
Discovery vs defence of current position

1962 Gap closed and virtually on par
1968 Toyota is more productive
1973 OPEC increases oil prices and Toyota’s

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Opening slide Argon is an element that is attached to oxygen and we inhale and exhale. It escapes into the atmosphere and then we breathe it in again. So at some point we have all breathed in the same breath that Steve Jobs, Alexander the Great, Martha Stewart, Martin Luther King and Jesus Christ had. All great leaders, creative and motivational with a strong sense of where they need to get to (vision) and visionary
  • #3 Creativity and putting yourself out there is often the easiest thing to kill but if it was easy everybody would do it!
  • #4 To be successful you will go through some difficulties – success is not easy Seize the moment
  • #6 So how could one define creativity – perhaps its about identifying and seeing patterns and then joining the dots to achieve a positive outcome and contribution to society
  • #7 Creativity is about seeing connections, joining the dots when and where others struggle to see
  • #8 People generally lock themselves into the limited confines of the series of dots – don’t see beyond the dots and how to connect them. But once shown people get it. Leadership is about showing people the way, and also providing an environment where others can lead depending on their skill set, knowledge and experience
  • #10 After 1989 San Fran earthquake. The predictive mathematical analytics used to accurately pin point the after-shocks and save lives was applied to help reduce the crime rate in the USA. Note the dramatic decline in the crime rate from 1990. Major crime scene was treated as the epicenter and then mathematics was used to predict where the after-shock crime would occur. Visible police presence was deployed to those areas and as a result the crime rate has fallen. Connected and creative thinking at work.
  • #11 Connected thinking Be disciples of experience Conventional wisdom = sophisticated data + analysis = good decisions. For slow moving businesses that’s ok Shorter time space to next generation of anything and everything – High velocity edge Senior leaders decide our way to greatness and then there are processes, tools, measures around that = compliance However, wisdom is greatness, is discovered. So go from what did you accomplish to what did you learn and can share? Data – need to know if its good data or not Knowledge – Intel produce chips. Any one can now replicate that with about $10K and how easy will it become with 3D printing, so how does Intel maintain their position and growth? The team identify what gets in their way and work on solving it
  • #12 What got in your way and why do you think it got in your way? What can we do so it does not get in your way tomorrow? From conventional – what should we be doing to why cant we? From production to problem solving Increased mnf capacity by 20% decreased costs by 50%
  • #16 Ben Lexcen Ben Lexcen did not follow the traditional path of education, nor did Leonardo Da Vinci and many other breakthrough creative connected thinkers. But they saw connections and persisted in investigating, challenging and experimenting to gain a superior understanding than that of their counterparts. They did this because they truly loved what they were doing and knew they needed to investigate the cause rather than relying just on conventional thinking.
  • #17  Ice hockey a game of high intensity, skill, speed, agility and consistent contribution of effort and focus. Need to think on your feet adjust game plan where necessary and the best teams achieve this through experience and connected creative thinking. Be strategic and have an agreed to game plan. Utilse the skill of the team around you, the roles they each play and they will also exhibit leadership and contribution at the right time in the right way.
