Telling Time
The document discusses incorporating technology into a 4th grade unit on telling time. Students are given the opportunity to experience interactive learning through multiple types of media that support classroom material. This allows students to strengthen their knowledge on various subjects. Several types of learners are given the opportunity to excel. Specifically, the unit of ‘telling time’ can be enjoyable and fun for students who are given access to be engaged in technology. The more fun a topic is, the better the performance of students. For example, on the top left is a picture of a matching game that Mrs. McDonald gives access to. It incorporates a matching game that forces students to practice pictures of clocks and the time in words. This takes a fun game and implements math skills within it, allowing students to have fun while learning! She even tells about herself for teachers and friends and parents to read about, allowing a more secure feeling when they are looking throughout her blog.

In the classroom there are many different learning styles, and by allowing technology in the classroom, many students’ learning styles are given the opportunity to excel. Hands on and active learners will enjoy and succeed if given the chance to use online activities like the one in this slide. Students are able to experience telling time in various ways, further strengthening their knowledge on the topic. Technology is a key factor in the real world, and implementing it in the classroom will allow students to connect to real life applications and prepare for their future success. This exercise specifically shows examples of how to answer the problems, following examples that are done by yourself. The clock moves the two hands, and asks the time. The students are to type in the time the clock displays. If they are stuck, they have an option on the website to give them a hint. This allows kids who are struggling to strengthen their skills!

Simply go to pinterest.com, and type in the topic and grade. For example, for my topic, I typed in ‘telling time for 3rdgrade.’ Then you are given access to tons of ‘pins’ that are all filled with activities, lessons and project ideas for that topic. Each pin brings you to another website that expands on the activity or lesson. This allows teachers to have a wide range of ideas to incorporate in their lessons. The more choice of lessons, the more opportunities for children to succeed.

Sometimes, watching videos on telling time will enhance students’ skills on their understanding of such a topic. The video in this slide is a teacher from a school teaching 4th graders how to tell time in regards to the four quarters on the clock (quarter past 2, etc.). Sometimes all the students need is to hear the lesson from a different voice, to get them to understand better. Children also enjoy watching videos, so they may pay closer attention to this. While the video is playing, teachers can pause and elaborate on the portion that is being displayed. They can ask questions to make sure students are on the same page, give extra problems, etc. This video also corresponds to the Common Core State Standards that are needed to be touched upon in each grade. Teachers should always make sure what they are teaching is found throughout the CCSS website (http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/3/MD).

This diagram can be used throughout or after a lesson of telling time. As a future teacher, I would implement this activity at the closure of a lesson to secure my students’ understanding of time. It is interactive and fun for students, and it connects them to real life applications. After learning how to tell time, the students can then practice telling time and then connect it with events, a skill that is important in the real world. The students have to tell the time of each clock, and drag the clock to the event most appropriate to that time. After they have matched all the 6 boxes, they can then make up their own box, which is fun for students and allows creativity and control to be expressed. This portion also forces students to make their own time, which requires the understanding of the two hands (minute and hour hands) and the appropriate time to their chosen event. This activity pulls together all of the necessary skills that are needed to be learned throughout a lesson on ‘telling time.’ 2.) How does this visual enhance student understanding of the topic?Students are able to visualize clocks and match them with actual events that occur in an ordinary day. By connecting time and clocks to real life applications students will understand more efficiently. When students are able to connect their classroom material to their everyday life, they remember better and perform at a higher level. All of the events in this diagram are things that all students encounter throughout a school day, preventing from any possible discriminations of students (for example, a student who doesn’t experience one of the options, causing them to feel left out).

Kids love using Velcro, and so adding it within a math activity will definitely enhance student performance. This activity also helps kids of all skill levels. Teachers can make Velcro times and have students attach the right time to the right clock. Teachers can make Velcro numbers of elapsed times that need to be put next to two clocks that show the correct elapsed time. This idea can be used in so many ways!

They don’t see these materials as boring or annoying, but instead fun and motivating! Each game on iTunes includes a description of what it’s all about. For example, below is the description and features of this game, taken from iTunes! Description taken from the iTunes store:Telling Time Free is an app designed for people of all ages. It's great for adults or anyone else looking for a brain training exercise. Telling Time Free is the only telling time app that has over 700 different clock values. Telling Time Free features an innovate way to input the time. Instead of giving the user multiple choice, Telling Time Free lets the user input the time by the hour, ten minute, and minute. The user inputs the digital time based on the analog time. There are two game modes, Practice and Quiz. In practice mode the user must input the correct answer in order to move on to the next question. In quiz Mode, users only have one chance to get the question right. Users also have the option to turn on a timer. Once the time runs out, the user will not be able to answer anymore questions. This website, “Math Goodies” has various topics that are used in elementary school. Teachers can pick their topics, and then make their own forums, worksheets, etc. Specifically, for math, I created a worksheet for telling time. As I have described previously, schools today are paying great attention to the differentiation within the classrooms. This website allows great assistance for teachers to work with this differentiation. When making the worksheet, I am able to change the difficulty of the worksheet (more/less problems, harder time increments vs. easier time increments, etc.). As you can see, there are 4 sample problems on this slide. The settings are set for less difficulty, hence why each time is a 60 minute increment.

Before telling time, especially elapsed time, students need to make sure their math skills are great! This website allows for tons of games to play in order to enhance their adding and subtracting skills (skills needed in order to tell time). Kids can race each other, collaborate, and work with the teacher. We have learned in our courses how collaboration is key to success, and this website is a step in the right direction!
