What’s TPACK?
T = Technological
P = Pedagogical
A

= Nothing--Tricky place holder

C = Content
K = Knowledge
Knowing how to
teach with
instructional
technologies in
ways that
students will
learn is
considered a
special kind of
knowledge
Reporting Out

Let me have a group
volunteer:
- Which Objective?
- What did the teacher
do? (What kind of
knowledge does the
teacher need to have?)
- What did the
students do?
- How do you know if
students have
learned?
Got TPACK?

they need to have?
What kind of

High TPACK? What Kind of Knowledge?
Reporting Out

Let me have a group
volunteer:
- Which Objective?
-How do you know
that students learned?
(What kind of
knowledge did the

The students?)
What Kind of Knowledge?
Avoiding “Technocentrism”
• Seymour Papert (1987) calls it “technocentric” when
instruction is planned starting with the digital tools
and resources that will be used.
• If you do this, the lesson is focused upon the
technologies being used, more than the students who
are trying to use them to learn.
Activity Types to help with planning
• Ways to help teachers add instructional
technologies to their teaching that
corresponds with how most teachers plan
• Start with the Goals, end with the
Instructional technologies
• http://activitytypes.wmwikis.net/
Using Activity Types to Plan
• Choosing learning goals
• Making practical pedagogical decisions about the
nature of the learning experience
• Selecting and sequencing appropriate activity types to
combine to form the learning experience
• Selecting formative and summative assessment
strategies that will reveal what and how well students
are learning
• Selecting tools and resources that will best help
students to benefit from the learning experience being
planned
“Affordances” of Technology

Can you think of other Instructional

Your Task…
1. Access your Diigo file and examine the fourth grade common core
standard
2. In pairs or group of three’s, select an objective to teach.
3. Write out a step by step plan for a one hour class showing how you
would introduce the lesson and teach the content.
4. Use Pinterest, Livebinders, or the internet to find an activity that
could be used to help you teach the objective
5. Use your activity type resources to identify technology that would
assist you in teaching the lesson.
