This webinar was hosted on May 27th, 2015 from 3 - 4 pm (IST) by Rajeev Malagi, Project Associate, EMBARQ India and Noor Mansoor, Commissioner, Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC).
Navanagar is a mix-use area located between the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad in Karnataka. It is predominantly a residential area dotted with - heritage sites, natural features, government buildings, educational institutions, commercial centers and transport hubs. EMBARQ India in collaboration with Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), Hubli-Dharwad BRTS Company Ltd. (HDBRTSCL) and HDMC has worked on a transit oriented development (TOD) project here. The project has looked at creating a pedestrian neighbourhood around the proposed Navanagar Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) stop. It aims at implementing steps to increase safer access to the roads, and improve public spaces.
This webinar highlighted the role played by EMBARQ India at different stages of the project (documentation, design and implementation), along with the stakeholder interactions at various stages and their decisions which have shaped the project.

Transit-oriented development (TOD): Integrating rail and commercial developme...Atkins
Atkins' technical director Jason Hutchings explores the ways in which cities across the world can gain maximum benefit from their investment in transport, commercial and civic projects through transit oriented development (TOD). TOD facilitates and encourages the use of public transport and provides alternative revenue streams for transport providers and operators, reducing their reliance on state funding for capital investment and operation/maintenance costs. It means transit systems are more popular, accessible and better connected for the commuting population, and commercial property development can be integrated and benefit from such a holistic approach to critical city centre locations. But TOD is not without its challenges. Atkins illustrates the issues and solutions across a range of international projects.
This presentation was first delivered in May 2013 at the 3rd Annual Modern Railways Conference, Singapore.
The aim of the Mission Smart City is to efficiently utilise the available Assets, Resources and
Infrastructure to enhance the quality of Urban Life and provide a clean and sustainable
environment for living and the main focus will be on core infrastructure services like adequate
clean Water supply, Power supply, Sanitation, Disaster Management, Solid waste management,
Waste water treatment, Efficient urban mobility and Public Transportation, Public Healthcare
system, Education, Affordable Housing, robust IT connectivity, e-governance, Safety, Socialsecurity. Smart City needs Smart Citizens too, Smart City needs to be Safe City as well for
citizens live a smooth life.
Some definitional boundaries are required to guide cities in the Mission. In the imagination of
any city dweller in India, the picture of a Smart City contains a wish list of infrastructure and
services that describes his or her level of aspiration. To provide for the aspirations and needs of
the citizens, urban planners ideally aim at developing the entire urban eco-system, which is
represented by the four pillars of comprehensive development — institutional, physical, social
and economic infrastructure. This can be a long term goal and cities can work towards
developing such comprehensive infrastructure incrementally, adding on layers of ‘smartness’.
In the approach to the Smart Cities Mission, the objective is to promote cities that provide core
infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment
and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions. The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and
the idea is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model which will act like a light house to
other aspiring cities. The Smart Cities Mission of the Government is a bold, new initiative. It is
meant to set examples that can be replicated both within and outside the Smart City, catalyzing
the creation of similar Smart Cities in various regions and parts of the country.

Public Transport in India needs to be communicated & marketed well to all the stakeholders to create its acceptability and uses. New public transport systems like BRTS are poorly communicated with no communications & marketing plan in place. In addition to great bus infrastructure, soft aspects of branding, communications & marketing needs to be prioritized & promoted.

Presentation for EMBARQ India. The review of evaluation and monitoring of TOD's in India. This was part of a larger presentation and compilation of TOD's in the developing world for the World Bank as an e-learning course.
This webinar was hosted on February 27, 2015 and was conducted by Sahana Goswami (Senior Project Associate, EMBARQ India) and the guest speaker will be Mr. Vasanth Rao (General Manager – Finance, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited).
Providing safe access to mass transit stations is a critical urban issue that urgently needs to be resolved in Indian cities. A growing number of Indian cities are building mass transit systems such as metro rail, light rail and BRTS to meet the mobility needs of citizens. Enabling safe access to these transit stations is essential to improve the user experience and ridership numbers.
Mr. Vasanth Rao presented learnings from the Namma Metro experience in Bangalore, while explaining BMRCLs approach to enabling safe access to mass transit.
This was the first webinar from the Safe Access Manual (SAM) webinar series that will run over the next few months, where featured guests and EMBARQ India staff will highlight critical issues discussed in EMBARQ India's latest Manual - The Safe Access Manual: Safe Access to Mass Transit Stations. The manual focuses on key findings on providing safe access and highlights learnings from EMBARQ’s own experience from working with various government agencies in cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Gurgaon and Hubli-Dharwad.

The role of parking in transit-oriented development (TOD) neighbourhoods - There is an urgent need for city planners in India to reconsider existing parking norms and develop options for parking reduction within TOD areas. Dr. Barter and Mr. Mulukutla looked into the role of parking space in TOD neighbourhoods and how it can be better designed to benefit communities living around them.

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) results in the creation of compact, walkable and liveable communities with access to amenities built around high quality mass transit stations. However, the discourse around TODs in India is more of a densification and value capture approach, which is necessary, but yet an incomplete conversation for the Indian context. This webinar, presented by Todd Litman, Himadri Das and Lubaina Rangwala addresses the major challenges and learnings from the ‘implementation’ of a TOD.

Neighbourhood improvement initiatives are not a new concept in India. These initiatives look at neighbourhood improvement in an integrated and comprehensive manner. The webinar will discuss various initiatives such as road safety design and street signage that can be taken up at the neighbourhood level in an integrated manner. Furthermore, various steps that can be taken to make the planning process participative and the plan implementable will also be discussed. The webinar will also include how the neighbourhood improvement plans can become a significant planning tool for our neighbourhoods, once it is integrated into the standard urban planning framework.

On 21 June 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a bold, new initiative - The Smart Cities Mission. The conceptualization of this mission is based on achieving an enhanced livability index in cities and boost public transportation, communication and water, gas and electricity supply. Additionally, this mission will also promote the utilization of technological innovations and familiarize people with e-management as the core of infrastructure. These ‘Smart’ Solutions will in turn drive economic growth. The initiative focuses on the sustainable and inclusive development of cities with the idea of looking at compact areas and creating a replicable model for other aspiring cities.
This webinar discussed what should India’s smart cities aspire to become for their citizens and how should policy makers approach the planning of smart cities.
