Altitude has a significant impact on mountain weather. Temperature decreases by around 6 degrees Celsius for every 1000 meter increase in elevation, so mountains can maintain snow and ice even near the equator. Precipitation is always higher at altitude due to air cooling as it rises over mountains. Wind patterns in mountains can also be unusual, with cold air descending into valleys at night, creating temperature inversions. Aspect also influences temperature, with south-facing slopes receiving more direct sunlight than north-facing slopes. Mountain weather is highly variable over short periods compared to lowland areas.

INTRODUCTION
The changeability of weather is a phenomenon known to all who live on Earth. Daily fluctuations in temperature, moisture and wind represent the most rapid weather changes that we experience. Changes in weather patterns through the seasons, the annual cycles, as well as multi-annual cycles are generally predictable. Spring does, in fact, follow winter year after year. Climate is defined as the composite of all the components that determine weather in a particular area averaged over time (i.e., a number of years). A particular region can be defined by the dominant weather feature(s) which affect the environment to the greatest extent: polar, monsoon, desert, tropical, etc. While a climate is described in terms of certain weather features, the presence of anomalies such as an unusual rainstorm or high-velocity wind need not change one's opinion about the overall climate for a specific region. In other words, extremes in a particular weather factor can be included just as long as the measurable weather characteristics approximate some average value over long periods of time.
Long-term climate changes measured in decades or centuries are difficult to quantify. Reminiscences of old-timers who recount the rigors of winters in the olden days are often taken with the proverbial grain of salt. Yet such comments do indeed raise the question: Has the climate in different parts of the earth changed over the centuries? The answer appears to be yes, but the basis for this answer is complex and, of necessity, relies on inferential data. It is the purpose of this article to examine a postulated climatic change in recent history. More specifically we shall analyze a time spanned by the dates 1450 AD to about 1850 AD when, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, there appeared to be temperatures much cooler than at present, a time which some have named the "Little Ice Age."
As we examine this topic, it will be seen that evidence for a significant fundamental climatic change is substantial, but — and perhaps more interestingly — the specific reasons for this change are not understood. It is hoped that the reader will gain an appreciation for the very delicate balance that allows life on Earth to continue, and for the serious changes in this balance that could result from catastrophic events.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Let's dive deeper into the world of ODC! Ricardo Alves (OutSystems) will join us to tell all about the new Data Fabric. After that, Sezen de Bruijn (OutSystems) will get into the details on how to best design a sturdy architecture within ODC.
2. Altitude has a marked impact on all elements of the weather. Take temperature for instance. Some parts of the Alps in Southern Europe, much further south and therefore closer to the equator than us, are permanently covered with snow and ice. Mont Blanc, the ‘white mountain’ and highest mountain in the Alps at 4810 metres or nearly 16000 feet in old money, is stark evidence of this.
3. Temperature falls by an average of 6.4 degrees Celsius for every rise in altitude of 1000 metres. So even on the equator mountains may be high enough and therefore cold enough to hold snow and ice on their summits.
4. While temperatures are lower than the surrounding lowlands, precipitation (rain and snow) in upland areas is always higher. This relief rainfall is caused by the air rising over mountains and cooling to produce cloud.
5. Odd things can happen to winds in mountains. During the day air rises up slopes, stimulated by the heat of the sun, but at night cold, heavy air can descend from upper slopes into valley bottoms. In these circumstances a weird phenomenon called an inversion can occur, as temperatures in the valley plummet way below those on the nearby uplands!
6. In Britain this effect can see cold air descending into a valley causing a ‘frost hollow’ marked by a pool of fog. In the industrial valleys of Lancashire and Yorkshire this fog was often added to by pollution from the woollen and cotton mills.
7. Aspect, the way a hillslope faces, can also have an important effect on temperature. In the northern hemisphere south facing slopes get the full intensity of the sun radiation concentrated on a small area. North facing slopes see much less of the sun and are consequently much cooler. In the Alps this can affect the location of villages, and the heights of the tree and snow lines. Even in this country fruit crops are most likely to be grown warmer south facing slopes.
8. The most predictable thing about mountain weather is its unpredictability! Often very different to the conditions found in nearby sheltered lowlands, temperatures, cloud cover, wind and precipitation can all change in minutes. There’s a great deal of truth in the old adage ‘mountains make their own weather’.
