  1. First, it’s important to share something we discovered from the pacesetters… and that is the notion of social capital Social Capital is the most valuable resource in any organization This is the knowledge people have… the accumulated experiences, skills, insights… about 10% of this is “captured” in knowledge management systems or in any kind of data format You all know lots about your businesses… right? Think about that
  2. The 1st Insight I want to share….. You are as smart as your network. This is about connected people >> we-as-a-service, this is about a shift from me to we and how you activate that And there are a few key components I want to share Think of it this way – it’s not about what you know, but about what you share, and through sharing we can help each other be smarter. “I can be as smart as the experts, only 5 minutes later’ Let’s break this down
  3. Ask people in the audience about what their expertise is in…. Go into audience, really ask, share 3-4
  4. A key characteristic of a smart network is to build a 360 degree network I love pumpkin pie so let’s use this as an example Average networks tend to look like this piece of pie… they tend to be horizontal, we call them flat networks…. With people in similar core competencies and experience 360 degree networks are about being very intentional about connecting to difference… to different touch points around the customer experience, for example, across disciplines and areas of the business
  5. Engage the audience around this saying to build some personal mental connections to this concept
  6. Strong links – close contacts who likely share expertise, experience…. Knowledge and expertise Weak links – 2nd 3rd level networks of people with DIFFERENT expertise, different experience, different insights, different perspectives This is about the notion that great ideas often come from unexpected places --- call this the serendipity effect – unexpected intersections with people and knowledge
  7. At 5 min What does this look like in action? To share an example with you, I want to share a particular story that sticks with me because it’s impact I think we can all relate to
  8. About 250 miles off the coast of Japan – 4th largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan
  9. We all watched in disbelief as giant walls of water swept inland. Aftershocks continued the damage. Multiple nuclear reactors were damaged, Fukashima Reactor later experienced meltdown, and reports of radiation leakage soon followed – contaminating food supplies and leaking into the Pacific
  10. But, here’s where the story turns…. A researcher named michael muller in Cambridge Mass (about 9,000 miles away) reached out to his network and invited them into an online discussion to brainstorm on ideas on how to help Japan manage the aftermath and pre-empt future disasters. His network started contributing ideas… ideas spread and their networks started contributing ideas
  11. An idea, sparked a network into action… more ideas triggered engaged collaboration People jumped in and setup Activities to project manage the ideas Ideation blogs were used to allow people to vote on ideas, enabling the most salient solutions to rise to the top Through Comments feature, people debated and discussed merits of shared ideas Through the Connections File app, people co-created and collaborated on a summary proposal for the government of Japan ALL of this was self-organized self-motivated action driven by good ideas and a “SHARED MISSION” to help
  12. In just days, the IBM General Manager for Japan, was presenting a set of 25 Solution Recommendations to the government Over half of these have been implemented Great ideas came from unexpected places Michael had some ideas, but his network was smarter This is social capital in action --- activated people across a social collaboration platform
  13. At 10 MINUTES 2nd insight I want to share with you…. These are 2 seemingly opposing goals a) scale free and b) speed… but let me share with you what this looks like and what this can mean for organizations this is something that pacesetter organizations are doing today (inside their organization and outside) This is about agility, being able to respond to changing market conditions So, what does this look like? It’s important to understand what this really looks like…. So to try and share this with you, I’m going to use a very unexpected example from nature….   14. What does a connected enterprise look like? Let’s look to an example in nature
  15. Let’s look at a little bird known as the Starling Naturally found throughout Europe and Asia You might think of this little guy as representing an employee, a person in an organization
  16. Starlings like to group together…. Kind of looks like a team doesn’t it.
  17. When thousands of Starlings come together, it can look like a large group of undirected individuals This is what an unconnected enterprise might look like Ever feel like this in your organization? Everyone going different directions
  18. But look at what the Starlings can do…. Scientists call these tight fluid formations – murmurations. The Starlings are able to process messages from their neighbors, almost instantaneously, to move in unison. A bird is able to read signals from birds from the other side of the flock, that they are not even able to see….instantly And…. they can do this regardless of the size of the flock… from hundreds of birds, to millions of birds. Scientists call this scale-free correlation – This is what a Connected Organization can look like… running on a social collaboration platform
  19. What’s also really interesting here, is that there is no lead bird. Movement of the flock is governed collectively by all the members. This is about removing friction from collaboration This is how the birds respond to predators (hawks.)… this is how they survive Now, this is not limited to inside an organization….many businesses are taking this external with partners, suppliers and customers in a Connected Enterprise Networks self-organize in friction-free environment to collaborate at scale at speed of business
