Detection Of Escherichia Coli, An Indicator Of Feacal Contamination, In Drink...IOSR Journals
The detection of Escherichia coli as an indicator of faucal contamination in drinking water sources in Amassoma town, a host Community of the Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, was carried out to determine their suitability for drinking. Result obtained showed mean total coliform bacterial counts of 2.05 x103 cfu/ml for borehole water, 1.25x103 cfu/ml for well water and 1.0x103 for pipe borne water. The mean count of faecal coliform was 2.1x103 cfu/ml for borehole water, 4.5x10 cfu/ml for well water and 1.0x10 cfu/ml for pipe borne water. The faecal coliform identified was Escherichia coli. Sources of contamination were found to be septic tanks, waste dump sites and periodic flooding of the area, being a typical wetland environment. It was concluded that water from the different sources studied in Amassoma did not meet the world health Organization (WHO) standard for drinking water. This study has therefore shown the need for continuous monitoring of our water supply systems.

Prevalence of Aeromonas Species Among Patients Attending General Hospital Owerripijans
A total of two hundred (200) stool samples were collected from patients attending General Hospital Owerri
and screened for the presence of Aeromonas species. Out of the two hundred (200) stool samples, one
hundred and fifty (150) were collected from diarrheal patients while fifty (150) were collected from nondiarrheal patients. Aeromonas species were only isoloated from diarrheal patients stool samples.The
prevalence of Aeromonas species in diarrheal patients was 5.3%. Aeromonas species were found to be
highly (100%) susceptible to ceftazidime, followed by cefotaxime (85%), then Augmentin (75%) and
Gentamicin (65%), but highly (100%) resistant to Ampicillin and Tretracyclin following by contrimoxazole
(83%). This observation could probably indicates that Aeromonas as enteropathogen associated with
diarrheal and should be considered amongst the causative agents of diarrheal.

2. What are Coliforms?
S A broad class of bacteria found in our environment,
including the feces of man and other warm-blooded
animals.
S The presence of coliform bacteria in drinking water may
indicate a possible presence of harmful, disease-causing
organisms.

S Are found only in the intestines of animals and these are
endemic in the waters of Puerto Rico

S Is a genus of lactic acid bacteria
S Two species are common commensal organisms in the
intestines of humans: E. faecalis and E. faecium
S Infections caused by Enterococcus include urinary tract
infections, bacteremia, bacterial endocarditis,
diverticulitis, and meningitis.
