• What is Vitamin
?
INTRODUCTION
Vitamins (English: vital amine, vitamins) are a
group of small-molecular-weight organic
compound which has a vital function in the
metabolism of every organism, which can not
be produced by the body. The name is derived
from the combination of the Latin word vita
which means "life" and amine(amine) that
refers to an organic group that has a nitrogen
atom (N)
•Vitamins have a specific role
in the body and can also
provide health benefits. If
levels of these compounds is
insufficient, the body can
suffer a disease.
•There are 13 types
of vitamins needed by the
body to be able to grow and
develop properly.
VITAMIN “E”
•Scientific name of vitamin E is
Tocopherol.
•Vitamin E plays a role in maintaining the
health of various tissues in the body,
ranging from skin tissue, eyes, red blood
cells to the liver. In addition,
this vitamin can also protect human lungs
from air pollution. Vitamin E is found in
fish, chicken, egg yolks, yeast, and
oilseeds.
CHEMISTRYOF VITAMIN“E”
STRUCTURE
STRUCTURE
Sources of vitamin
SunflowerSeeds
• One ounce of dry-
roasted sunflower
seeds delivers 7.4 mg
of vitamin E.
• ALMONDS (7.3 mg of
vitamin E per ounce)
• HAZELNUTS (4.3 mg of
vitamin E per ounce)
• PEANUTS (2.2 mg of
vitamin E per ounce)
• PINENUTS(One ounce of
pine nuts contains 2.6
mg of vitamin E)
Turnip Greens
• A half cup has 2.9 mg
of vitamin E
TOMATOES
• A quarter cup of
tomato paste has
2.8 mg of
vitamin E.
AVOCADO
• Half an avocado
has 2.1 mg of
vitamin E and
161 calories.
Pharmacological properties
1. Prevention of oxidative stress
2. Supporting healthy skin
3. Vitamin E inhibits platelet aggregation
4. Vitamin E may be involved in signal transduction in
neuronal cells
Therapeutic indications
• Angina
pectoris
• Acne
• Alzheimer’s
disease
• Cancer
• Cataracts
• Diabetes
• Psoriasis
• Parkinson’s disease
• Respiratory infection
etc.
CATARACTS
•Cataract is caused by metabolic by-products
called free radical
•vitamin E supplements can reduce the risk of
cataracts.
•It is powerful antioxidant helps to prevent
cataract
Diabetes
1:High does vitamin E appeared to temporarily
improve insulin resistance
2:Vitamin E has also been shown to help some
diabetics gain better control over their blood sugar
Parkinson’s disease
•High dose vitamin E dietary supplementation or
parenteral vitamin E administration (e.g. vitamin E
succinate) may serve as a successful therapeutic strategy
for the prevention or treatment of PD (by enriching
substantia nigra mito with protective levels of T).
Respiratory Infections
• Vitamin E supplementation has been shown to improve
immune response in the elderly.
• Supplementation with 200 IU per day E significantly
reduced the incidence of common colds in elderly nursing
home residents by 20%
•It decrease the risk of acquiring a cold by 21%
deficiency
• In humans, deficiency of vitamin E is seen in
Premature infants
• Transfer of vitamin E from maternal blood occur
during last few weeks of pregnancy
• Premature infants will have vitamin E deficiency
• Impaired absorption: seen in conditions such as
• Abetalipoproteinemia (fat malabsorption)
• Obstructive jaundice
• Intestinal diseases such as celiac sprue
• Genetic vitamin E deficiency:
it is caused by lack of protein that normally
transports α–tocopherol from hepatocytes to
VLDL
• Clinical features:
Hemolytic anemia or macrocytic anemia seen in
premature infants
In adults, increased susceptibility of erythrocytes
for hemolysis under oxidative stress
Muscles weakness and proteinuria is seen.
SIDE EFFECTS/ADVERSE EFFECT
• Taking vitamin E supplements for up to 4 months at doses of 530mg or
800 IU (35 times that current RDA) had no negative side-effect on general
health,
• Body weight
• Level of body proteins lipids level
• liver or kidney function
• Thyroid hormones
• Amount or kinds of blood cells
• And bleeding time over doses may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrheoa
• Vitamin E products in excess of 1200 IU daily may interfere with
absorption and metabolism of vitamins A and k but one can get benefits
with much lower levels of vitamin.
• Individuals who are vitamin K (people who are on blood thinners) deficient
should not take alpha-tocopherol supplements without close medical
supervision because of the increased risk of hemorrhage
Contraindications
• Contraindications have not yet been
identified.
Interactions
1. Vitamin E may increase the anticoagulant
effect of warfarin.
2. may decrease the benefits of atorvastatin
therapy.
3. Plasma levels of vitamin E may be lowered by
anticonvulsants.
