A vernier caliper can be used to measure diameters and thicknesses accurately. It has inside jaws, outside jaws, a vernier scale, main scale, depth gauge. The inside jaws measure internal diameters, outside jaws measure external diameters, and the depth gauge measures depths of holes. To take an accurate reading, the zero point on the vernier scale is matched to the main scale to get a rough reading, then the vernier divisions are checked against the main scale for the precise reading.
