A Vernier caliper is a precise measuring instrument that can measure internal or external distances. It has two sets of jaws, larger jaws that tighten around an object and smaller jaws that fit into openings. To take a measurement, one set of jaws is placed against the object and tightened. The measurement is then read by lining up the main scale with the zero of the sliding Vernier scale to get the whole number plus the first decimal. The Vernier scale is then read to get additional digits by finding the first line that aligns perfectly with the main scale. The two measurements are then added together to provide the full precise measurement.
