2 basic categories of nonverbal
  language:
• Non verbal messages produced by
  body.
• Non verbal messages produced by
  setting (time, space, silence)
Importance of Non verbal
            communication.
• To repeat verbal messages.(point when stating
  directions)
• To accent verbal message.(verbal tone to indicate
  actual meaning of words)
• Complement verbal message.(nod to reinforce
  message)
• Regulate interactions (cues to when the other
  person should speak)
• Substitute for verbal message.(finger to lips –
  quiet, nod – yes)
Cultural Differences in non verbal
            communication.
1. Appearance and dress-
   all cultures – make
   judgements
2. Body movement
a) attitude –
  facing / leaning
  towards
b) emotional status
  – tapping fingers,
  jiggling coins
3. Posture
a) bowing – not done in
   US; shows rank in Japan
b) Slouching – rude in
   most countries
c) Hands in pocket –
   disrespectful in Turkey
d) sitting with legs
   crossed – offensive in
   Ghana, Turkey
4. Gestures –
varies according to cultures
Acceptable in one’s culture
   but offensive to another
Eg: pointing – US – index
   finger; Germany – little
   finger, Japan – entire
   hand
 counting – thumb – 1 in
   Germany, 5 in Japan
Middle finger – 1 in
   Indonesia
5. Facial expressions –
   identical but meaning
   may differ.
a) Asian cultures –
   suppress facial
   expression.
b) Latin/Arabic –
   exaggerate grief; Am
   men hide grief
c) animated expressions –
   lack of control.
d) too much smiling –
   shallowness.
6. Eye contact and gaze
a) Western – eye to eye –
   positive – interest,
   attention
b) Arabic – prolonged eye
   contact – interest and
   truthfulness.
c) Japan, Africa, Latin
   Am,- avoid eye contact
   – to show respect
7. Touch
Basic message – protect,
   support, disapprove (hug,
   kiss, hit, kick).
a) USA – handshake –
   common; hugs, kisses for
   opposite sex or family –
   intimacy.
b) Islamic and Hindu – don’t
   touch with left hand;
   Islam – don’t approve
   touching (opp gender).
c) Asians – don’t touch
   head (houses the soul)

Verbal and nonverbal messages

  • 2. INTRODUCTION • Communication – verbal and non verbal messages. • Say something orally but body saying something opposite. • If both in line – more likely to be trusted – eg: interview.
  • 3. Verbal Messages in face-to-face comm. • Tone of voice - enthusiasm • Pitch – natural and not forced • Nervousness – speed and space of words
  • 4. Nonverbal messages in face-to-face communication • Appearance • Eye contact • Gestures • Facial expression • Body language
  • 5. Verbal VS Nonverbal messages • Verbal – use of words – spoken and written. • Nonverbal – accompanying body language.
  • 6. Nonverbal communication modes • Touch • Glance • Eye contact • Volume • Proximity • Gestures • Facial expression • Dress • Posture • Smell
  • 7. 2 basic categories of nonverbal language: • Non verbal messages produced by body. • Non verbal messages produced by setting (time, space, silence)
  • 8. Importance of Non verbal communication. • To repeat verbal messages.(point when stating directions) • To accent verbal message.(verbal tone to indicate actual meaning of words) • Complement verbal message.(nod to reinforce message) • Regulate interactions (cues to when the other person should speak) • Substitute for verbal message.(finger to lips – quiet, nod – yes)
  • 9. Cultural Differences in non verbal communication. 1. Appearance and dress- all cultures – make judgements
  • 10. 2. Body movement a) attitude – facing / leaning towards b) emotional status – tapping fingers, jiggling coins
  • 11. 3. Posture a) bowing – not done in US; shows rank in Japan b) Slouching – rude in most countries c) Hands in pocket – disrespectful in Turkey d) sitting with legs crossed – offensive in Ghana, Turkey
  • 12. 4. Gestures – varies according to cultures Acceptable in one’s culture but offensive to another Eg: pointing – US – index finger; Germany – little finger, Japan – entire hand counting – thumb – 1 in Germany, 5 in Japan Middle finger – 1 in Indonesia
  • 13. 5. Facial expressions – identical but meaning may differ. a) Asian cultures – suppress facial expression. b) Latin/Arabic – exaggerate grief; Am men hide grief c) animated expressions – lack of control. d) too much smiling – shallowness.
  • 14. 6. Eye contact and gaze a) Western – eye to eye – positive – interest, attention b) Arabic – prolonged eye contact – interest and truthfulness. c) Japan, Africa, Latin Am,- avoid eye contact – to show respect
  • 15. 7. Touch Basic message – protect, support, disapprove (hug, kiss, hit, kick). a) USA – handshake – common; hugs, kisses for opposite sex or family – intimacy. b) Islamic and Hindu – don’t touch with left hand; Islam – don’t approve touching (opp gender). c) Asians – don’t touch head (houses the soul)
