Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins, usually blue or dark purple, that occur most often on the legs. They may appear lumpy, bulging, or twisted. Varicose veins are defined as dilated, elongated, tortuous and palpable superficial veins as a result of venous hypertension. Management options include exercising, losing weight, avoiding tight clothes, elevating the legs, and limiting long periods of standing or sitting. Surgical options for treating varicose veins include vein stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy, and endoscopic vein surgery.
