USE OF HERBAL MEDICINE IN SKIN
INFECTIONS

1.MANGE
ETIOLOGY:-There are two main types of mange – sarcoptic mange (sarcoptes scabei)
and demodectic mange (demodex canis).
CLINICAL SIGNS:-
Intense scratching
Skin rash
Crust formation in the affected area
Hair loss (alopecia)
HERBAL TREATMENT:-
{1} NEEM :-
Neem, or Indian lilac, has varied dermatological benefits as it has antiseptic
properties
 nourishes and soothes the skin
ensures faster regrowth of fur.
{2}VEGETABLE OIL :-
The sticky nature of vegetable oil will help cut off the mites’ air supply, eventually
killing them.
soften the wax-like deposits and scabs
provides relief from the endless scratching.
{3} HONEY :-
Antioxidant , relief from scratching and itchiness
{4} MIXTURE OF NEEM AND TURMERIC:-
Anti-pruritic, anti allergic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic synergistically
.
{4} OTHER WAYS TO TREAT :-
Applying aloe vera, mixture of lemon and garlic , yogurt (curd) , apple cider vinegar
etc
2. RINGWORM (Dermatomycosis)
ETIOLOGY :- DOGS- Microsporum canis (70%) , Microsporum
gypseum(20%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (10%)
CATS :- , Trichophyton mentagrophytes CATTLE- Trichophyton
verrucosum, HORSE- Microsporum and trichophyton spp.
CLINICAL SYMPTOMS :- Grey-white areas of skin with an ash like
surface
 circular in outline and slightly raised lesions
In calves most commonly found around eyes, on ears and on back, in
adult cattle chest and legs more common
HERBAL TREATMENT:-
1. Herb- Solanum indicum( Badi, Kateri, Vanabhanta) ; Parts used:-
leaves; Method of preparation – leaf juice twice a day about 50ml
in cattle; Route- Oral
2. Shrub-Maesa chisia (Bilauni); Parts used-stem bark. Route- Oral
3. Tree- Clausena dentata( horsewood); Parts uesd:- leaves; MOP-
leaf paste is applied on affected parts; Route- Topical
 GINGER
 PAPAYA :-Papaya fruit has anti-fungal properties ; used against
ringworm when applied topically
 TURMERIC:- Fresh turmeric paste can be applied. Dogs-one
tablespoon of turmeric powder with honey can be fed
 BASIL
 NEEM/ INDIAN LILAC OIL
 LICORICE (MULETHI)
 BASTARD TEAK (KAMARKAS, PALASH)
 ALOE VERA
3.PAPILLOMATOSIS (warts)Papillomatosis or warts are benign proliferative tumor affecting
almost all species of animal.
ETIOLOGY:- Papilloma virus, CATTLE:- bovine papilloma viruses
(BPV)
CLINICAL SIGNS:- warts of all sizes on necks, skin of eye lids, teats
and lower abdomen.
HERBAL TREATMENT:-
1) Aegle marmelos(Indian bael, golden apple)
2) Teat papilloma were successfully treated with Bai-Mast®
(TRIPHALA, CUCURMIN) herbal capsule. Papilloma starts
regressing from 5th day after treatment and completely
disappeared after 20 day of treatment without any
recurrence. DOSE- 3-5 caps bid orally for 18–22 days
3) GILOY (Heart- leaved moonseed, Amrita)
4) Tulsi leaves
5) Fresh turmeric paste
6) Little camphor mixed in cocnut oil
7) Bhumi amla( PHYLLANTHUS NIRURI) herb
8) Neem
9) Manjistha( Rubi cardifolia)
10) Guggulu resin( Commiphora mukul), Guduchi( Tinospora
cardifolia), Black pepper(Piper nigrum) ,Pippali (Piper
longum), Ginger, Indian jaap ( ipomoea turpethum) etc.
4. SEBORRHOEIC DERMATITIS
ETIOLOGY:-allergies, endocrine disorders, dietary deficiencies,
malabsorption disorders, parasites, and autoimmune disorders.
CLINICAL SIGNS:- Back, face, flanks are mostly affected,
In these areas scales, flakiness, itchiness, and red skin is noticed
2 common forms of seborrhea:- a dry (sicca) form and oily (oleosa)
form.
HERBAL TREATMENT:-
1) Olive oil and sunflower oil- omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids
2) Bathing- 3 cups water
1 cup of baking soda (which will help exfoliate and moisturize their
skin)
2 cups crushed natural oats( jaee)
3)Immune boosting herbs- Echinacea purpurea
4) Blood cleansing properties-Oregon grape(like blue berries),
sarsaparilla( sarneem), red clover
5) Yellow dock ( churka)
6) Aloe vera
5. DERMATOPHILOSIS (Dermatophilus infection, Rainscald, Kirchi
Cutaneous streptothricosis, Lumpy wool, Strawberry footrot)
ETIOLOGY:- Dermatophilus congolensis (a gram-
positive, non-acid-fast, facultative anaerobic
actinomycete). Reported- zoonotic
SIGNS:- characterized by exudative dermatitis with
scab formation
HERBAL TREATMENT:-
1) NEEM LEAVES PASTE
2) 10ml aloe vera gel as a base, 10 drops each of
Patchouli (Pachauli, sugandhara), Frankincense,
Myrrh (Lohaban), and Yarrow, Blend in 5ml of
linseed oil. Add Chamomile tea( like shevanti)
gradually (up to 100ml) until there are no
separations. Store out of direct light and
extreme cold in a jar or bottle for up to 1 year-
RAINSCALD
3) Lemon and alovera cleanser soap/ shampoo
6.FOLLICULITIS
Bacterial folliculitis, a condition which involves
the infection of hair follicles with bacteria and is
widely considered the most common kind of canine
skin infection.
HERBAL TREATMENT :-
1) Antibacterials -white vinegar (Apple, grape,
corn, rice), garlic, turmeric and coconut oil are
excellent against folliculitis
2) Equally effective are herbs like thyme
(अजवायन के फू ल), honeysuckle, and
goldenseal
3) Neem leaves
4) Aloe vera
5) Coconut oil
6) Mixture:- Eucalyptus (Tailapatra),
Neem (Nimba), Turmeric (Haridra)
7. IMPETIGO
ETIOLOGY:-Staphylococcus, Streptococcus(Group A)
LESIONS :- pus-filled blisters that may break and crust
over
usually develop on the hairless portion of the abdomen.
 Impetigo is rarely serious and can be treated with a
topical solution
CAN BE HERBALLY TREATED BY:-
1) Garlic
2) Myrrh and Frankincense
3) Turmeric
4) Aloevera / Gel
5) Herb-Giloy leaves and stem
6) Lavender / Coconut oil
8. ALOPECIAETIOLOGY:
Mange, parasitic infections, hypothyroidism, a fungal
disease like ringworm, an allergic reaction to a recent
vaccination or fleabites, diabetes, and various endocrine
diseases affecting both estrogen and testosterone
levels, including Cushing’s disease. Seasonal hair loss,
Dermatophilosis (rain rot) Dermatophytosis (ringworm),
malnutrition , Mares- pregnancy etc.
HERBAL TREATMENT:-
1) Olive oil- Gives shiny coat,relieves itchiness
2) Flaxseed ( linseed oil)- Mixed in food and
fed.Positive results in few weeks. NEW HAIR
GROWTH
3) Aloe Vera + Lemon juice:- Soothes, new hair
growth, prevents hair loss due to itching
4) High levels of niacin can be found in brown rice
5) OATMEAL:-as conditioner (smooth coat)
6) Spinach, sweet potatoes ,carrots- can be added in
dogs food etc.
7) MIXTURE:- Five-Leaved Chaste Tree (Nirgundi) and
Castor (Gandharva hasta) oil contains ricinoleic acid
8) ONION JUICE:- Sulphur content
ADVANTAGES:-
 Tend to be more effective for
long standing health
complaints that do not
respond well for traditional
medicines.
 Have fewer side effects, and
maybe safer to use overtime.
 Herbs cost is less.
 Available without prescription
and herbs like tulsi, aloevera,
peppermint etc. can be grown
at home.
 In some remote areas-
Farmers may have only herbs
available as treatment.
DISADVANTAGES:-
 Herbal treatments can
interect with medications
 Delay in effective treatment
for serious condition
 Contamination during
manufacturing process

Use of herbal medicine in skin infections

  • 1. USE OF HERBAL MEDICINE IN SKIN INFECTIONS TRACKING PROGM. :- ALTERNATE VETERINARY MEDICINE GUIDED BY:- DR. SUBMITTED BY:- DARSHANA SHINGNE
  • 2. 1.MANGE ETIOLOGY:-There are two main types of mange – sarcoptic mange (sarcoptes scabei) and demodectic mange (demodex canis). CLINICAL SIGNS:- Intense scratching Skin rash Crust formation in the affected area Hair loss (alopecia) HERBAL TREATMENT:- {1} NEEM :- Neem, or Indian lilac, has varied dermatological benefits as it has antiseptic properties  nourishes and soothes the skin ensures faster regrowth of fur. {2}VEGETABLE OIL :- The sticky nature of vegetable oil will help cut off the mites’ air supply, eventually killing them. soften the wax-like deposits and scabs provides relief from the endless scratching. {3} HONEY :- Antioxidant , relief from scratching and itchiness {4} MIXTURE OF NEEM AND TURMERIC:- Anti-pruritic, anti allergic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic synergistically . {4} OTHER WAYS TO TREAT :- Applying aloe vera, mixture of lemon and garlic , yogurt (curd) , apple cider vinegar etc
  • 3. 2. RINGWORM (Dermatomycosis) ETIOLOGY :- DOGS- Microsporum canis (70%) , Microsporum gypseum(20%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (10%) CATS :- , Trichophyton mentagrophytes CATTLE- Trichophyton verrucosum, HORSE- Microsporum and trichophyton spp. CLINICAL SYMPTOMS :- Grey-white areas of skin with an ash like surface  circular in outline and slightly raised lesions In calves most commonly found around eyes, on ears and on back, in adult cattle chest and legs more common HERBAL TREATMENT:- 1. Herb- Solanum indicum( Badi, Kateri, Vanabhanta) ; Parts used:- leaves; Method of preparation – leaf juice twice a day about 50ml in cattle; Route- Oral 2. Shrub-Maesa chisia (Bilauni); Parts used-stem bark. Route- Oral 3. Tree- Clausena dentata( horsewood); Parts uesd:- leaves; MOP- leaf paste is applied on affected parts; Route- Topical  GINGER  PAPAYA :-Papaya fruit has anti-fungal properties ; used against ringworm when applied topically  TURMERIC:- Fresh turmeric paste can be applied. Dogs-one tablespoon of turmeric powder with honey can be fed  BASIL  NEEM/ INDIAN LILAC OIL  LICORICE (MULETHI)  BASTARD TEAK (KAMARKAS, PALASH)  ALOE VERA
  • 4. 3.PAPILLOMATOSIS (warts)Papillomatosis or warts are benign proliferative tumor affecting almost all species of animal. ETIOLOGY:- Papilloma virus, CATTLE:- bovine papilloma viruses (BPV) CLINICAL SIGNS:- warts of all sizes on necks, skin of eye lids, teats and lower abdomen. HERBAL TREATMENT:- 1) Aegle marmelos(Indian bael, golden apple) 2) Teat papilloma were successfully treated with Bai-Mast® (TRIPHALA, CUCURMIN) herbal capsule. Papilloma starts regressing from 5th day after treatment and completely disappeared after 20 day of treatment without any recurrence. DOSE- 3-5 caps bid orally for 18–22 days 3) GILOY (Heart- leaved moonseed, Amrita) 4) Tulsi leaves 5) Fresh turmeric paste 6) Little camphor mixed in cocnut oil 7) Bhumi amla( PHYLLANTHUS NIRURI) herb 8) Neem 9) Manjistha( Rubi cardifolia) 10) Guggulu resin( Commiphora mukul), Guduchi( Tinospora cardifolia), Black pepper(Piper nigrum) ,Pippali (Piper longum), Ginger, Indian jaap ( ipomoea turpethum) etc.
  • 5. 4. SEBORRHOEIC DERMATITIS ETIOLOGY:-allergies, endocrine disorders, dietary deficiencies, malabsorption disorders, parasites, and autoimmune disorders. CLINICAL SIGNS:- Back, face, flanks are mostly affected, In these areas scales, flakiness, itchiness, and red skin is noticed 2 common forms of seborrhea:- a dry (sicca) form and oily (oleosa) form. HERBAL TREATMENT:- 1) Olive oil and sunflower oil- omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids 2) Bathing- 3 cups water 1 cup of baking soda (which will help exfoliate and moisturize their skin) 2 cups crushed natural oats( jaee) 3)Immune boosting herbs- Echinacea purpurea 4) Blood cleansing properties-Oregon grape(like blue berries), sarsaparilla( sarneem), red clover 5) Yellow dock ( churka) 6) Aloe vera
  • 6. 5. DERMATOPHILOSIS (Dermatophilus infection, Rainscald, Kirchi Cutaneous streptothricosis, Lumpy wool, Strawberry footrot) ETIOLOGY:- Dermatophilus congolensis (a gram- positive, non-acid-fast, facultative anaerobic actinomycete). Reported- zoonotic SIGNS:- characterized by exudative dermatitis with scab formation HERBAL TREATMENT:- 1) NEEM LEAVES PASTE 2) 10ml aloe vera gel as a base, 10 drops each of Patchouli (Pachauli, sugandhara), Frankincense, Myrrh (Lohaban), and Yarrow, Blend in 5ml of linseed oil. Add Chamomile tea( like shevanti) gradually (up to 100ml) until there are no separations. Store out of direct light and extreme cold in a jar or bottle for up to 1 year- RAINSCALD 3) Lemon and alovera cleanser soap/ shampoo
  • 7. 6.FOLLICULITIS Bacterial folliculitis, a condition which involves the infection of hair follicles with bacteria and is widely considered the most common kind of canine skin infection. HERBAL TREATMENT :- 1) Antibacterials -white vinegar (Apple, grape, corn, rice), garlic, turmeric and coconut oil are excellent against folliculitis 2) Equally effective are herbs like thyme (अजवायन के फू ल), honeysuckle, and goldenseal 3) Neem leaves 4) Aloe vera 5) Coconut oil 6) Mixture:- Eucalyptus (Tailapatra), Neem (Nimba), Turmeric (Haridra)

IMPETIGO ETIOLOGY:-Staphylococcus, Streptococcus(Group A) LESIONS :- pus-filled blisters that may break and crust over usually develop on the hairless portion of the abdomen.  Impetigo is rarely serious and can be treated with a topical solution CAN BE HERBALLY TREATED BY:- 1) Garlic 2) Myrrh and Frankincense 3) Turmeric 4) Aloevera / Gel 5) Herb-Giloy leaves and stem 6) Lavender / Coconut oil

ALOPECIAETIOLOGY: Mange, parasitic infections, hypothyroidism, a fungal disease like ringworm, an allergic reaction to a recent vaccination or fleabites, diabetes, and various endocrine diseases affecting both estrogen and testosterone levels, including Cushing’s disease. Seasonal hair loss, Dermatophilosis (rain rot) Dermatophytosis (ringworm), malnutrition , Mares- pregnancy etc. HERBAL TREATMENT:- 1) Olive oil- Gives shiny coat,relieves itchiness 2) Flaxseed ( linseed oil)- Mixed in food and fed.Positive results in few weeks. NEW HAIR GROWTH 3) Aloe Vera + Lemon juice:- Soothes, new hair growth, prevents hair loss due to itching 4) High levels of niacin can be found in brown rice 5) OATMEAL:-as conditioner (smooth coat) 6) Spinach, sweet potatoes ,carrots- can be added in dogs food etc. 7) MIXTURE:- Five-Leaved Chaste Tree (Nirgundi) and Castor (Gandharva hasta) oil contains ricinoleic acid 8) ONION JUICE:- Sulphur content

ADVANTAGES:-  Tend to be more effective for long standing health complaints that do not respond well for traditional medicines.  Have fewer side effects, and maybe safer to use overtime.  Herbs cost is less.  Available without prescription and herbs like tulsi, aloevera, peppermint etc. can be grown at home.  In some remote areas- Farmers may have only herbs available as treatment. DISADVANTAGES:-  Herbal treatments can interect with medications  Delay in effective treatment for serious condition  Contamination during manufacturing process
