Learn how to use prototyping and usability testing as a means to validate proposed functionality and designs before you invest in development. SOMETIMES there is a huge disconnect between the people who make a product and the people who use it. Usability testing is vital to uncovering the areas where these disconnects happen. In this symposium you will learn the steps to conduct a successful usability test. This includes tips and real life examples on how to plan the tests, recruit users, facilitate the sessions, analyze the data, and communicate the results.
Usability testing can help bridge the gap between developers, marketers, and stakeholders. Usability testing lets the design and development teams identify problems before they are coded. The earlier issues are identified and fixed, the less expensive the fixes will be in terms of both staff time and possible impact to the schedule. Usability testing is a great way to help teams prioritize website redesign efforts. In this session, we'll talk about the main types of usability tests and why it's better to usability test before deciding on making changes to the design. By conducting tests early, your team learns what to change. You'll learn what to keep. Usability testing early makes it easier to build the requirements, define the use cases, and even create QA test scripts, because you can drive all those things right off what you saw in the research. It will likely reduce your development costs because you’ll have data to make decisions, instead of driving everything off some strong-willed individual’s opinions of what users need. Pushing your user research as early as possible in the schedule is the best way to get value from your efforts.
These slides provide an introduction to usability testing. This well-known method in user-centred design is used to improve products, by having participants interact with these products and by measuring their performances and responses.
I presented this topic as a guest lecturer to first-year Psychology students at the University of Twente at February 6th, 2017. Providing examples and best practices from Dutch digital design agency Mirabeau, I explained to them the required steps for the preparation, the moderation, and the analysis of usability tests. Moreover, I highlighted the importance of psychologists’ knowledge, (research) methods and skills for design, which I believe to be invaluable.

User Experience Basics for Product ManagementRoger Hart
User Experience (UX) has matured as a discipline and radically changed how products are delivered. It touches workflows, usability, customer needs, and of course visual design and UI. Product managers can't ignore it, even if they want to... and if they want to, they're probably wrong. The tools of User Experience can help us get closer to our customers and differentiate our products.
What is Lean UX? Come get introduced to the topic of Lean UX and learn the fundamentals of this approach, and how it is revolutionizing the field of UX with UserTesting. Discover how constant iterating through cycles and learning from each cycle can create products which can overcome business challenges and meet customer needs, while saving big bucks, resources, and time.
We will cover the basic principles of Lean UX, and how UserTesting fits into this model of research.
This was a 4-hour workshop that was given at World Usability Day Colombia. #wudco14

A workshop that introduces the foundation of Usability Testing which includes tips for planning, recruiting, moderating, as well as collecting metrics using the success rates.
Usability Testing is an observational technique used in user-centered interaction design to evaluate a product by testing it on users. It is great to get early feedback on your product before writing a single line of code, or even designing a hi-fi mock-up.
Light Weight Methods to Drive Your Designs ForwardNicole Capuana
Product teams these days need to be moving quickly and iteratively in delivering great products. At times though, teams can get stuck on how to move the designs forward. Sometimes it’s because of unexpected complexity and other times there are multiple paths to explore.
In this workshop, participants will experience a variety of methods that help teams gain a shared understanding through collaboration with clients, product owners, and key stakeholders. Each of the methods covered are light-weight and can be adopted by teams at any stage in the product design and development. Learn how to:
+ get started with user research,
+ define personas,
+ generate and turn ideas into solid solutions,
+ create low-fidelity mockups that can be tested with users immediately,
+ conduct a usability test,
+ synthesize your findings,
+ and gain focus for the product through games and structured discussion.
Every method covered will focus on designing a mobile app so that participants get the full experience of how each method fits into designing a product.
Don't worry if you don't have any UX background, this workshop will guide you through exercises. And if you're a UX rockstar, come flex your usability prowess with other professionals. Come learn and share tips & tricks! Everyone on a product team can benefit from this hands-on practice.
If you’ve never requested a usability study bid before or you want to see how our process differs from others you have worked with in the past — this deck is for you. Here is the 5-step process June UX uses to plan and conduct moderated usability studies.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

34. Usability test - introduction
● Greet the tester.
● Describe shortly what this testing
is about.
● Explain that this is the test of your
product and not of the tester.
● Ask the tester to remember to
○ verbalize his thoughts and
actions,
○ be honest and blunt.
35. Get your testers relaxed
Ask some simple questions
● Where are they from?
● What’s their occupation?
● Their favourite themes and plugins.
Testers feeling good and
comfortable is very
important for the successful
usability testing.

● Don’t help them in finishing
their tasks.

43. We are not done yet. Debriefing
Debriefing - a meeting with
all of the observers where
you compare notes
You will need a leader
to keep the things focused
44. Debriefing: let’s compare our notes
● Ask observers one by
one to read the issues
they noticed
● Write the notes down in
a shared document
● Shortly discuss how
problems can be solved
● Rank problems by
severity
● Create and distribute
list of fixes to
implement
50. “Where do we go from here?”
● Usability testing is easy, cheap and effective.
● You will learn a lot about your own products.
● You can make friends and meet people.
● You will have fun.
● You will improve your work.
My advice: Go for it!

52. What we learned
“Don't cheat the process. If the
evidence shows there is a problem, fix
it. Don't make excuses.”
“Take nothing for granted. Users have
unexpected workflow. What you think
is a logical order of doing things is not
always going to be how users want to
do things.“

“You may find out that your perfectly
crafted interface is not so intuitive.
And that fancy border is not a drag
handle. It is just a fancy border”.

53. What we learned
“What was completely clear to us may have been
completely hidden to the user and viceversa.
It’s like when you grow up your kid and you see him / her
everyday and you’re losing the perception he’s growing,
while others that see him only every once in a while tell
him at a glance: “you grew up a lot since last time”.
