3. Introduction:
Upper limb prosthesis is a device that replaces the missing part of the
upper limb and their function . Upper limb amputation are named by
the limb segments affected . An upper limb amputee requires a
complete and through evaluation at the level of involvement and also
associated functional and physical deficits .

Surgical removal of affected body part or limb

7.  Transphalangeal amputation:
Resection of the thumb or fingers at distal interphalangeal
(DIP),proximal interphalangeal (PIP), or metacarpophalangeal (MCP)
levels, or at any level in between
 Transmetacarpal amputation:
Resection through the metacarpals
 Transcarpal amputation:
Resection through the carpal

8. Wrist Disarticulation:
Separates the carpal bones from the radius and ulna.

9. Transradial Amputation:
Amputation occurs within the substances of radius and ulna .

Humerus is preserved but the radius and ulna are removed

11. Transhumeral Amputation:
Amputation occurs through the humerus . More than 30% of
proximal humerus is remained.

12. Shoulder Disarticulation:
It is an amputation where less than 30% of proximal humerus is
preserved .

13. Forequarter Amputation:
More proximal than shoulder disarticulation , that invade central
body cavity , resecting the clavicle .

Upper limb amputations are not so common as lower limb
amputations
Upper limb prosthesis is prescribed after a holistical patient
assessment
Upper limb prosthetic components are chosen according to patient
expectations , either cosmetic or functonal.
As the prosthetic components are more costly, often patients don’t
want any prosthesis.
