Cholera Epidemic Analysis
Amid the nineteenth century, a few pandemics of cholera began from India and spread to Western
nations (Kanungo Sur, 2012). According to Ali, Nelson, Lopez, and Sack, cholera is a genuine
general wellbeing issue in creating nations. Cholera can bring about scourges in populations. It can
be an epidemic in populations next to zero or regular invulnerability, frequently taking after normal
catastrophes amid which the nature of water and sanitation can be traded off (Kim, Mogasale,
Burgess and Wierzba, 2015). As stated by Clemens, the bacteriaVibrio cholerathat causes cholera
disease can be transferred from person to another person by fecal oral route, contaminated water,
poor sanitation and hygiene (Kim, Mogasale, Burgess and Wierzba, 2015). On the word of

Inconveniences that may emerge are the loss of liquid and electrolytes, hypokalemia, acidosis,

procedures. To begin with is early location of cases allows the recognizable proof of contaminated

Film Analysis Of The Shawshank Redemption
Introduction:
Shawshank Redemption is directed by Frank Darabot, published in 1995 Australia. The film
focusses on the theme of forgiveness and escape. It follows an unusual friendship between Andy
and Red set in a 1930 s American prison. The main focal scenes explored include: Brooks suicide
and Tommy s death. The filmis to be narrated by Morgen Freeman (Red), it shows the 20 year
period of Andy s imprisonment. As a part of the analysis emphases on the scenes as it introduces the
audience to the Shawshank prison and Andy s first moments when attends to the prison to the very
moment when he escapes to Mexico.

Film Techniques:
The first key moment of this scene is where we are shown a wide shot of Brooks sitting alone
feeding the pigoens. The wide shot reveled that he was alone and isolated. There was then a close
up on his face and we could see his expression and the way he hung his head downward. The way
he was holding his body gave the audience the feeling , that he might have been dealing with
sadness and depression from the start.
A particularly interesting scene comes at the moment of Brook s suicide, the movement is used
at first makes the audience unsure what is going to happen to Brooks, there is a close up of his
shoes standing on the stool and for a moment, the audience are unsure of what is going to
commence next. His statement says I have decided not to stay. I doubt they ll kick up any fuss.
Not for an old crock like me this indicate the meaning of how he is going away , but the darkness
and music of the scene says otherwise.
There is then a close up of him writing brooks was here on the wall, which briefly tranquillize the
audience when seen that he s simply carving the message. There is a camera angle taken from

Importance Of Credibility In Public Speaking
Ordinarily, to establish credibility, public speakers should earn the audience s trust and respect by
presenting themselves as authorities on the topic that they are speaking. Consequently, the speaker
should not rely on the content of their speech to gain credibility with the audience. Self presentation
is important too since the public will start judging the communicator before the speaker begins to
communicate verbally. Establish the authority to the public by speaking about the topic by stating
the source of where the knowledge: experience, training, or research came into perspective. When
speaking to a skeptical audience, begin by finding common ground. Acknowledge the appeal of the

When in doubt, choose the side of formal professional attire. Second, look at the public because it
shows sincerity. Nevertheless, the speakers who make eye contact with the audience appear more
open, trustworthy, and confident. Notwithstanding, if reading from a script or consulting cue cards,
look up frequently to maintain the connection with the audience. Third, the necessary step to
establish credibility is to speak loudly, clearly, and confidently. Confidence has become known to
cause contagious if a person has confidence, the audience will catch it quickly.
Fourth, tell your audience about your credentials because trust has become contagious to fans will
begin to believe more readily if an individual can prove that others value the person s expertise.
Credentials include certifications, relative degrees, recommendations, testimonials, volunteering
experience, work experience, and informally, other types of personal experience. Fifth, reveal a
personal connection to the chosen topic. Answer questions for the audience what has become at
stake for the speaker? How has the subject affected the speaker s individual s life? If it is
appropriate, then share a personal anecdote illustrates to establish a relationship to the topic. Lastly,

Essay On Closed Adoption
Since ancient times and in all human cultures, children have been transferred from adults who
would not or could not be parents to adults who wanted children for love, labor, and property.
Adoption s close association with humanitarianism, upward mobility and infertility are uniquely
modern phenomena. Adoptionwas not fully marked on who was adopted and by whom until 1920.
(darkwing.uorgeon.edu) In fact, closed adoptions amended birth certificates and legal regulations
are a recent innovation that gained momentum in the 1930s and later, and many adoptions were
open prior to that. (Free, Barbara). Historians consider the 1851 Adoption of Children Act an

The Foolishness Of Jim Crow Laws
I m tired of all this foolishness. Everywhere I glance there are signs that read Whites and
Colored. Jim Crow Laws are everywhere and they re a number of laws requiring racial
segregation. Jim Crow Laws created segregation and discrimination against African Americans.
People judge us by what they see, the color of our skin instead of us as an individual. Everyone s
human and no one should feel any lesser than anybody, we all have feeling and sometimes I
even feel terrible because of the way I get treated. Everyone should be equal no matter the shade
of color because that doesn t mean you can t have the same rights as others. People see African
Americans as less just because of the simple fact we re black. Therefore, I m going to take all my
pride and stand up for what I believe.
I m going to stop all this nonsense. I m going to make the world better and I will make history. I
don t want people to suffer the way I did and still am, I want them to live happy. I want people to
be happy of who they are and feel proud of themselves no matter what anybody has to say. I want
people to have a future and succeed, I just want the best. I want people to follow in my footsteps
and say King stood up for what he believed in and I want to do the same thing. I want to be an
inspiration for the next generation and because I know every African Americanwants the same
thing, which is respect and equality I will stand up for them. Even Though I know many people
want this change, many people are not willing to do what it takes because of the simple fact there
scared. Believe me I m scared too I don t know what s going to come out of this. Yes, I m running a
really huge risk but I m doing it for my people. I m willing to give up everything and anything just
for there to be world peace and equality. I ve been told to always strive for what I believe in and
that s what I m going to do.
I don t like the fact that white people feel as if they re better than blacks and colored. I m not
saying that blacks and colored people are better either. I just don t know what lead people to think
like this. In all reality the world would be a better and healthier place if there was no type of
discrimination. Everyone points out the

Separation Between Church And State
Over the years many things have changed, the clothes people wear, the music they listen to and the
cars the drive. We live in a society where things can change in the blink of an eye, but is change
always good? Could things change because things have been taken out of context? That is just what
has happened to Thomas Jefferson. Has the true meaning of Thomas Jefferson s Separation between
Church and State taken out of context today?
One side defends that the true context remains intact. Saying that religion should play no part in the
government what so ever. Saying that a political leadership based on religious convictions can
harm the freedom of citizens who do not belong to the majority religion. Arguing that religion based
attempts to limit reproductive rights have been particularly contentious in America. A Connecticut
law banning the use of contraceptives was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1965. A similar
Massachusetts law was defeated in 1972, followed the next year by the court s landmark Roe v.
Wade ruling that a woman has the right to choose abortion.
They also argue that the government should not allow prayer to be in schools. Praising the 1962,
the U.S. Supreme Court banning of prayer and religious readings from public schools. Saying that
school prayer assumes that all students believe in God, and that a given prayer might be applicable
to all different faiths that could be practiced among students. It is much more likely that the typical

Martin Heidigger s Response To Modernity Analysis
To understand Martin Heidigger s response to Modernity one would have to examine the
relationship between their notions of Man. Martin Heidigger s concept of Man, a being in the
world, is very different from the Modern view of man as a thinking being. One believes that
understanding comes from a purely subject object perspective wherein the understanding of the
world around us is performed by our internal, completely separate, I because it is perfect and
known innately while the other believes that to be a being is to actively Be , which is the same
as Heidigger s notion of Being, and to Be is to exist or to be engaged in the world therefore
connecting being, Being and the world forming the concept of Dasein or a being in the world. To
understand Heidigger s response one would have to first understand what it is he s responding to.
Cogito Ergo Sum summarizes what the Cartesian man is all about. The idea that to exist is to think
separates the world into the inner world and the outside world; this idea resulted from Descartes

Specifically, he looked into what is a human person because when Plato and the other classical
philosophers stated what being was, everybody else just automatically assumed that people just

Being in the world which basically meant that to Be, as in to literally exist, as a being involves the

Parenting Observation
Previously, I was aware that infants require a relationship with their caregiver in order to be
healthy. Infants are not able to provide themselves with their basic needs, but they also require a
secure attachment to be mentally sound. In the past, we theorized that allowing infants to cry
without providing them attention, or only allowing a wet nurse to care for them, increased their
ability to be self reliant later in life. Now, we understand that individuals who are self reliant are
able to be independent because they have their emotional and physical needs met. According to
Erikson once children have established trust, they can feel secure enough to develop autonomy.
This means that the Victorian era concept of refusing care for infants is not the most effective
parentingtactic. However, infants and toddlers are not the sole product of their environment. Nature
and nurture work... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

For this project, I decided to revisit the story/movie of Forrest Gump. In the movie, Forrest Gump
was portrayed as a young man with both intellectual and physical disabilities; these characteristics
categorized him abnormal/less of a man. These disabilities made Forrest experience devaluation on
various levels in different stages of his life. His mother tried to protect him from such acts keeping
him isolated and close to home. Forrest Gumps character was made fun of a lot, throughout the

braces were to assist him with the crook in his back. Further research relates this type of

The Earl Of Rochester And Jonathan Swift
When reading Eighteenth Century literature it is clear that the concept of one s privacy was non
existent, particularly in poetry. Poets of this period were more aware of the growing public
readership they had as a result of developments in education, and people from each class were
now able to access poetry. This meant what was published had a greater impact on society, as
poetry became increasingly [...] a more public form of expression (Goring, P. p.64) for writer s
opinions on political and private matters. The Earl of Rochester and Jonathan Swift both portrayed
the private world to this public audience in their poetry, but through the use of satire. The issues

An imperfect picture is created of Rochester s private world compared to his public life, and the
negative effects the early Eighteenth Century libertarian lifestyle has had on him. His demeaning
language and its comparison with an ideal scenario create the satire that is needed to bring
Rochester s private world into the public world.
Swift on the other hand is trying to expose the private world of a lady s dressing room,
something new to society at the time, and he does this through satirically comparing the public
and private versions of women. Tita Chico argues in Privacy and Speculation in Eighteenth
Century Britain that there were [...] exclusive privileges associated with the privacy of the
gentleman s closet (p.42) which were now seen as being threatened by women s dressing rooms.
There was a feeling of fear about what women might get up to in private and Swift exposes a
satirised reality in his poem which [...] links women s privacy with illegitimacy through grotesque
images of the female body (p. 41). Throughout Eighteenth Century literature, the use of a dressing
room represented women as [...] theatrical and excessive (Chico, T. Designing Women: The

Good literature hold a mirror up to nature . They force the audience to reflect on themselves and
the world they live in. The playwright William Shakespeare and director Lee Tamahori

explore complex realities that some face on a daily basis. Dysfunctional families, frailty, and
redemption are realities reflected Tamahori s Once Were Warriors, and Shakespeare s Hamlet. The

Hamlet seeks redemption through revenge. Hamlet needed to redeem himself, only way to do

Exchange forgiveness with me, noble Hamlet. Mine and my father s death come not upon thee,
Nor thine on me (5.2.322 324). Claudius also tried to redeem himself, after watching the Murder

brother and even says a complete soliloquy about it. Oh, my offence is rank. It smells to heaven.
It hath the primal eldest curse upon t, A brother s murder. Pray can I not. Though inclination be

Essay on Sentimental Monarchy
Monarchies have shifted to less political importance over the years in favor to parliament and a
democratically elected prime minister. The film The Queen is a great example of the limited
power of Queen Elizabeth II in present day and shows the ceremonial purposes of her role. The
main reasons that this role shift has happened is because monarchs abused their unlimited power
repeatedly. Oliver Cromwell was one man who did not like the way his King, Charles I, was
controlling the country and decided to do something about it. What some find startling is that
Charles I reign ended by being sentenced to death, and by being beheaded under the weight of an
axe. Charles I was disliked by many of his people because he was trying to change the... Show more

So bad that it has led to the current state of a limited monarchy that is regarded more for
historical preservation purposes and tourism. Monarchies would be fantastic if the royal family
is perfect and ruled fairly for the good of its people, but the lavish lives that have been
historically accompanied to royalty have created an almost religious type of support. After
years of royalty leading the public, its disciples begin to follow blindly and without any control
of the government or say in decisions being made. If the position of King or Queen was low key
such as the current prime minister, or presidential positions there might not be so much
opposition from the public. As the royal family is busy having 10 course meals in lavish
clothing and living spaces, its people are often in the streets with little money for food or basic
clothing. This is the most condescending aspect of the status of royalty who are accompanied
by butlers and servants around the clock. How can they relate to its common people if they don t
know what it s like to live in the real world and not some fantasy? How can a person be in favor
for a King to rule your country in absolute control who has never worked for any achievements
other than being born by the right parents? The Queen (film) represents the royal family in present

to last more than two days in this humid environment, and you re not going to make it out in that
time. Tropical Rainforests contain water sources that can be found in the form of streams or
lakes or even tiny water vines. One tip into finding a lake or stream is look for a place where
shorter, fern plants flourish, and not much tall trees are found. If a water source cannot be found,
rainwater is more than enough to keep you alive. Remember before consuming any water, to boil it
over a fire (see Fire ) so that any bacteria is killed off. (http://news.discovery.com /adventure

The renovation of the flooring in MLH 120 was to update classrooms and labs to current standards

the classroom, tables, bolts and nuts. Tools that were used in the data collection was a micrometer,
vernier calipers, meter stick, and a fiberglass tape measure. Measurements were conducted three

Arthurs was becoming increasingly forgetful. He was often unable to remember stock numbers,
colour codes, product lines, packaging modes, and other information essential for serving clients
efficiently and completing orders accurately. These problems were subtle in 1987, but became quite
pronounced and embarrassing over the next three years.
In May 1989, Arthurs and Jackson had a conflict relating to the purchase of a new company car.
According to Jackson, Arthurs presented him with a quotation for a car, which, in Jackson s view,
included $2,500 in unnecessary options. Jackson informed
Arthurs of his concerns and instructed him to find a car worth $13,000 instead of
$16,000. Jackson then left town on business and when he returned was distressed to find that
Arthurs had made his proposed car purchase with almost all of the unnecessary options. Jackson
issued the cheque to pay for the car, but also included a note to Arthurs saying that he had lost
confidence in the sales representative. It was about this time that
Jackson contemplated firing Arthurs, but decided instead to be a nice guy and overlook the matter.
At the end of 1989, Jackson decided to reassign the North Vancouver independent accounts from
Arthurs to another Western Agencies salesperson because the existing accounts had shown minimal
growth and no new accounts were being added.

Iran-Contra Affair Essay
Iran Contra: Crossing That Line I think everyone knew we were walking a very thin line. (Owen)
Not many Americans know the truth that lies behind the Iran Contra scandals. Most would be
surprised to know about the deception of our leaders. Still today, some truth of Iran Contra lies
hidden in the conscience of the people who organized it, aided it, and went through with it. It
started with good intentions, but soon was corrupted. Some may argue that we must do what we
can to smother the flame of communism, but I believe that deception, abuse of power and
bloodshed is no way to go about it. To fully understand Iran Contra, you must know the history
behind it. Draper explains to us that the Iranian Revolution of 1978 1979 brought the... Show more

What if one of the people that took me aside in country B would come to my country and he
would be considered as a slave? Under the ethical theory known as the Veil of Ignorance , every
person in society has the right to equal freedom. Also if there is an inequality in society, it must be
to everyone s advantage. Since racial profiling violates a person s freedom, the violation benefits
no one, therefore racial profiling should be considered immoral.
One way of trying to eliminate racial profiling, would be through extensive data collection because
it is beneficial on many fronts. According to http://www.racialprofilinganalysis.neu.edu/background

В•Send a strong message to the community that the department is against racial profiling and that
racial profiling is inconsistent with effective policing and equal protection
В•Build trust and respect for the police in the communities they serve
В•Provide departments with information about the types of stops being made by officers, the
proportion of police time spent on high discretion stops, and the results of such stops
В•Help shape and develop training programs to educate officers about racial profiling and
interactions with the community
В•Enable the development of police and community dialogue to assess the quality and quantity of
police citizen encounters

Sheila Priestley s Play Sheila
Advice to An Actor Playing Sheila
When creating the character Sheila Priestley s aim was to show the audience that the younger
generation of Birlings, and therefore the younger generation of society, were the ones who were
the most forward thinking and were the most likely to agree with a policy of socialism. Sheila is
also used as a means to highlight the stupidity and selfishness of Mr and Mrs Birling and Gerald.
The play begins with the Birling family celebrating the engagement of Sheila and Gerald. Despite
the fact that Sheila is an adult, her family are seen to treat her as a child. This should be reflected
in the way that the actress presents Sheila, as this is likely to be a response to her immature
personality. The actress must also be aware that during 1912 women were subordinate to men,
therefore it must be clear that Sheila has a lower position of power than her finance Gerald. This
opening scene has a celebratory mood, therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The actress should try to show that deep down Sheila is upset about the fact that Gerald never
came to see her. This line also plays a crucial role in highlighting to the audience that the
relationship between Gerald and Sheila is not as happy as it had previously seemed. When
Sheila first finds out the news of Eva Smith s death she is visibly distressed and horrified.
Despite the upsetting news, the actress needs to make it clear that Sheila is vein and is still
ignorant to the lower classes. This is due to the fact that on of the first questions about Eva s death
is regarding her appearance pretty? . To Sheila the fact that Eva was pretty is what makes her death
even more upsetting. Therefore Sheila believes that a woman s value comes from how pretty they

Power And Gender In Shakespeare s Play Much Ado About...

William Shakespeare: Much Ado about Nothing
What does the play seem to say about power and gender? Compare and contrast at least four
characters, using specific examples to support your answer. William Shakespeare s play Much Ado
about Nothing is one of his many creations during the Renaissance and Elizabethan Era. This is
one of Shakespeare s most famous play that is still performed to this day. I was able to witness
students from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts production perform this play.
Shakespeare exposes the dark and ugly truth about gender inequality that occurred during the
Elizabethan Era. In the Messina society, the men were superior to women, and the women to
feel inferiors to the men. However, in this play, Beatrice is seen as an exception as she says Oh
that I were a man (The University of North Carolina School of the Arts production). For women,
honor was based on virginal chastity, while men were honored based on their social rank and
camaraderie. Shakespeare portrays Hero as the ideal women during the Renaissance period by
depicting her as quiet, polite and respectful. She follows the rules of the patriarchal society, like
submitting to her father s decisions and accepting her father s demand that she should say yes to
Don Pedro s marriage proposal. She offers no objection to the marriage proposal even though it
was from Claudio instead of Don Pedro. Hero will not say

Historical Destruction Of Machu Picchu
Many archaeological sites and artifacts around the globe have fell victims to cultural heritage
destruction. Whether it be from weather and climate change, tourism, the taking of artifacts, or
degradation over time. Cultural heritage destruction can be defined as the destruction or elimination
of historic sites, artifacts, or materials. Some people, whether it be government, an organization, or
individuals, work to protect and fund the preservation and maintenance of important historic
archeological remains. While other unfortunate sites are demolished, ransacked, or looted due to
lack of protection. Machu Picchu, located in the Andes mountains in Peru, is considered one of the
seven wonders of the world, as well as an archeological marvel built by the Inca people. However,
this historical site has come under protection due to cultural heritage destruction from tourists and
environmental degradation. Over the years, Machu Picchu has begun to erode due to an enormous
amount of tourism and climate changes. Luckily the Peruvian government has begun to take action
to protect one of the world s most well preserved mysteries and architecturally advanced sites of
early modern history.

Three Answered Questions About War, State and Humanitarian...
Question 1: War is already a relatively rare phenomenon, although some forms are more
common than others, but imagine a world where war is almost unheard of. This scenario is a
highly probable outcome of a world populated solely by mature, liberal democracies. There are
many benefits of having a democracy as a countries form of government, and less violence is one
of them. Whether the violence be interstate wars, civil wars or terrorism, all instances would
decrease in the case of a democratic regime. Democracyis defined as a political system in which
candidates compete for political office through frequent, fair elections in which a sizeable portion

We believes it is imperative that all As stay together. To add to the argument that ethnic lines
should be drawn, it is well known that As and Bs have a long history of not getting along, this
brings fear to State A that ethnic cleansing might occur if the lines are not drawn around them.
State B refuses to budge on this topic, they have threatened that if they do not get all the land
they want, then they will wage war against State A. In recent history, State B has never gone
through on a war threat, but this time may be different. Through intelligence gathering, we have
discovered B s large growth in military and arms. We believe that they have been developing
their army and building up weapons supplies for the past few years. According to Daryl Press in
Calculating Credibility , there is two ways to measure credibility, past action theory and current
calculus theory. If I follow the current calculus theory, which Mr. Press believes to be correct,
State B s threat is credible based on military growth and high interest in this new territory. As a
result, a bargain through coordination will have to be reached. Both States A and B will have to
give a little in our territory dispute to stay inside the bargaining range.
Question 3:
Humanitarian crises are always enormously difficult to handle. Like the current conflict in Syria,
there are typically mass killing of civilians, ethnic cleansing and genocide. The United

The Five Themes In King Leopold s Ghost
King Leopold II was a cruel and greedy man who wanted to expand Belgium s power by taking
over the Congo. He would kill to better his country. He convinced the Congolese people that he
wanted to colonize Africa. Little did they know, it was the start of Leopold taking over the
Congo, stealing their riches, and enslaving the Congolese people. Adam Hochschild s King
Leopold s Ghost illustrates the five themes of AP World History in the following ways:
Hochschild s book applies to the first theme, Interaction between Humans and the Environment
because the book deals with diseases, migration, population growth, and technology. For
example, the author mentions on page 10 how a village near Diogo Cäo s stone pillar south
shore of the Congo River estuary became a slave port. Over 5,000 African slaves were forcely
migrated across the Atlantic. Many were shipped directly to the Americas and others were
captured by African slave dealers who bought slaves from local chiefs and headmen. To add onto
the reasons the book applies to this theme, technology is human knowledge which involves tools
and other systems. One may use technology for manufacturing, creating artifacts, communication,
transportation, etc. In the book, the Congolese people were without writing however, they forged
copper into jewelry and iron into weapons. Also, when the Europeans came to Congo, they
brought many diseases with them such as smallpox and sleeping sickness which caused many
Congolese to die. Next, the theme Development and Interaction of Cultures deals with religion,
philosophies, art, such as: dance, painting, sculpting, and how believed systems changed
overtime. In the book, the author mentions the Kuba people, Africa s greatest artists. They work
in masks, sculpture, textiles, and elaborately carved tools. Also, in chapter 11, in the year 1897,
Leopold had a world fair where the Congolese people had to dance, cook, and drummed. To add
on, when King Leopold came to Africa and manipulated people into thinking he was trying to help
the country, the Congolese people believed in a term the white man s burden . Basically, it was a
saying that was used when people wanted to civilize countries like Africa which was probably the

An Example Of Manna Walking Rhetorical Analysis
12/06/2015 Manna Walking Summative Part A Using my prior knowledge and details inferred
from the short story, Manna Walking by Dawn Karima Pettigrew, I am able to tell what Food
Stamps, A P and Navajo are. Furthermore by using examples in the text given by the author, I
am able to identify three examples of strong writing in the text such as the concrete and selective
language the purpose of the text, and the voice created by the author. Firstly from my prior
knowledge I know that Food Stamps are a system of aid used in the United States of America for
families that require benefits as a method of surviving hard times. From the cashier s reaction in

She uses her vocabulary and word choice very efficiently that presents an image to the reader
from the very first line. She describes the cashier as the kind of blonde poured out of a bottle.
This immediately conjures an image of a classic teenage girl brimming with insecurity that has
to judge others and dye her hair to hide her flaws. This shows an interesting contrast as the one
that is being viewed as inferior in this situation is Manna yet she is the one that is the most
comfortable with who she is. A second example of concrete and selective language is the
inclusion of small details that helps to draw a picture for the reader. For example when Manna is
leaving the grocery store parking lot, she walks away from the burned out ampersand on the neon
supermarket sign, and the sale on sprinklers and the almost genuine Navajo ashtrays. By including
these details, the reader is taken into the story in their mind and it helps them to empathise with her
situation. It is only if you are actually in a place that you are able to identify small details; the
author including them into the story really helps to paint an image in the reader s mind. For
example without the inclusion of such small details, then the reader would never be able to
accurately imagine the location or Manna s situation, something I believe the author is trying to
achieve with this

Similarities Between Ancient Greece And China Essay
1. Using three civilizations as examples, describe the concept of the Axial Age The concept of
axial age was introduced into the sphere of philosophical knowledge by German existentialist
philosopher Karl Jaspers for characterizing the period of ancient history during about the 8th to the
3rd century BC. In this period of time we have developed a fundamentally new religious beliefs and
doctrines that promoted human and cultural values of the era. Jaspers described the Axial Age as
an interregnum between two ages of great empire, a pause for liberty, a deep breath bringing the
most lucid consciousness. Jaspers argued that during the Axial Age, the spiritual foundations of
humanity were laid simultaneously and independently in China, India, Persia, Judea and Greece.
And these are the foundations upon which humanity still subsists today. Consider, for example
Greece, India and China. Ancient Greece up to the 6th century BC was on a par with other
civilizations by the level of spiritual development. Hellenic culture range was one of those, whose
coordinate system covers the problems of family, God, nature and Eros. As a general rule, the
mentality of this culture consisted the two vectors Apollonian and Dionysian. Dionysian beginning
was aimed at the satisfaction of the instinctual needs, as opposed to the Apollonian, whose essence
consisted of creative and scientific elements. The widespread fall of the monarchy and the

Since this segment traded more frequently than others, they value DLJdirect fast and reliable
service that the company could offer. DLJdirect could provide the services that GRF segment
sought which are low fees, transaction confidence and site performance. The company could
attempt to target this segment but they should not spend a huge amount of money for this customer
acquisition. Based on exhibit 10 in the document, it showed that the size of this market segment is
reducing as the years go by. When compared to high end customers, the company needs to assign a
higher discount rate to this segment because they swing the health of the stock market. Another
problem is that this segment consists of less affluent traders. Therefore, it is advisable for them not
to go into this market because the company could not build a long term profitability in this segment.
In your opinion, are there other customer segments that DLJdirect should target? Why?
In my opinion, DLJdirect should not target other customer segments besides AA and GRF. The
reason is because the company has been doing well in AA segment which is proven by the

that it is valuable. This emphasis on value is not natural in uncivilized creatures. The idea of
value is created by society. The conch represents the value placed on things that are rare hard to
obtain in our society, much like a fancy car or an old work of art. With an emphasis on value
comes feelings of jealousy and envy. This is only natural and can be seen when Jack decides that
the conch should only be used by those he sees as worthy. For good or bad, the conch becomes the

Finally, the conch is also a symbol of power. This is because whoever holds it becomes the only
person who may speak during the meetings. In this context, holding the conch represents having
authority. Whoever holds the conch then has the authority to speak and all others must wait until it
is their turn to hold the conch. This is much like standing at the podium or holding the microphone
in a civilized society. Here the conch also represents the organization found in a democratic
government and the idea of raising one s hand in school. Both a democratic government and a
school are organizations that rely on the concept of everyone having a voice and a chance to
express themselves. The conch is the only link left to

Spad Character Comparison
Between the two books, Farewell, My Lovely and The Maltese Falcon, we find many similarities
from the purpose of the plot to the characters within. Both books are a fan of the hardboiled
detective and are set within the state of California. The main characters of both books share
many different traits that define them as hardboiled detectives. To be a hardboiled detective one
must have the utmost attention to detail, be independent of personal ties, must live within the
hustle and bustle of city life, and must be a strong man always willing to be physical if needed.
Within both of these novels we see Spade and Marlowe match up with many of these
characteristics, while also being developed under different circumstances to result in different
personalities and stories. I believe that both Spade and Marlowe, in their own unique ways,
embody what it means to be a hardboiled detective. From the very beginning of both novels, the
first things that a reader notices about each detective is how he describes people and places
around him. Although the Maltese Falcon is written in the third person, we see very vivid
descriptions of the characters within. For a reader, these great, vivid descriptions really help the
book come alive as though watching a movie. While reading this novel, I noticed myself seeing
these descriptions as less of the narrator s description and more of how Sam Spadesees the world
and people around him. As a private detective, this over the top attention

Examples Of Alcoholism In Reservation Blues
3.3 Alcoholism The portrayal of alcoholism, which has been rampant through the generations
cannot be denied and presents a paradox with which the native writers must grapple. The
pathetic city drunks and the pitiful alcoholic parents of the warm water sisters, Junior, Thomas,
and Victor ring like wake up calls to the social problems faced by the Indian people. The
representation of alcoholism in the text, Reservation Blues, highlights a stereotypical social image
of the drunken Indian. It is not a kind of mirroring, portraying colonial impact, that non native
people want to accept and is a sore subject for the Indians, because it is very familiar for most of us.
It is a dilemma for not only Alexie, but the Native writers in general:... Show more content on

Despite the verisimilitude of Alexian portrayal of alcoholism and its impact upon the lives of
the Native Americans, Alexie does not aim to put the social problems of economic instability,
poverty, or cultural oppression into perspective (Coyhis, pp. 157 66). Instead, alcoholism and
drinking are sensationalized: Lester is the most accomplished drunk on the Spokane
Reservation (Schmidt, 2011), a notoriety that wins him tribal hero status. Victor, incapable of
coping with rejection, turns to the bottle for solace like a tragic failed artist. Sherman Alexie
deals with the problem of alcohol in his work, as it is something inherent to the American
Indians. Maybe, the reason is that alcoholism was a big problem in his family. For example, in
his short story, The Only Traffic on the Reservation Doesn t Flash Red Anymore of the novel
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, he tells the story of a young boy who is
considered a reservation basketball star, but his promising future is destroyed by alcohol. In
another short story, What You Pawn I Will Redeem of Ten Little Indians, Alexie gives a number of
metaphorical names to alcohol, a bottle of fortified courage (Alexie, 2005, p.171)

Analysis On Data Security And Privacy
Introduction
The goal of our research paper is to provide a concise analysis on data security and privacy
protection issues pertaining to data and databases as well as the current advancement/ breakthrough
made and achieved in regards to database security and privacy concerns. We will also discuss in
this paper some current solutions in the security market. First, we looked at the a trusted database
model which makes it possible to shield database with absolute secrecy to benefit trusted
equipment presented on the side of server and made to work at the charge of any cryptography
which permits private data handling on a simple device.
Also, we looked into the problem of Enterprise Search Engines, How it gives out detailed
aggregate information about the enterprise which is a bridge in privacy and this is a big concern.
Also review the new technique that was proposed and used in analyzing the problem by
suppressing sensitive aggregate for enterprise search and still keeping it originality in answering
users.
We will use another technique which is encrypting data with different encryption keys assigned to
each group this makes a challenge which is we would like to execute queries without revealing
information on the server mean while doing less computations on the client, some techniques
minimize the revealed information on the server and amount of computations on the client. We also
focus on investigating the operational model, database use in Rails.
Therefore, we provide

Descriptive Essay On The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight
You only have your thoughts and dreams ahead of you. You are someone. You mean something.
Very inspirational quote right, maybe it came from the president or Oprah, someone big right? It
came from a fictional character in a comic book, Batman the Dark Knight. Comics have become
something greater than what people consider them to be. Especially the characters portrayed in
said comics. Comic books are literally larger than life, the characters in these comics may have
superpowers or live in a place that would only exist in the craziest of dreams. But they are
written so well that it really does convince one to believe that a place like this may actually exist
and that anything can happen in it. This is how they get the reader, into the comic; and because of
this you are entertained. We read our favorite comic books and take in the lessons written in each
and every page. Such as Batman. Batman is one of the greatest and well known heroes in the
comic book world. He has been very popular in pop culture throughout the years because of
television and movie adaptations.
When I was growing up I was first introduced to the Dark Knight by my dad when he would turn on
the television every Saturday morning and tune into Batman The Animated Series. I remember
instantly gaining interest in it because he was really cool, he fought bad guys, and he had all these
gadgets that helped him fight for justice.

Essay On American Sign Language
I first learned American Sign Language through a TV show. It was one of the shows that were
trending lately, just like the current Stranger Things and Thirteen Reasons Why. I was a
bandwagoner so I would always watch all the shows that were talked about. Switched At Birth
educated me so much about ASL, deafness, and more. Because of this show, I have wanted to learn
sign language more than ever. More than just learning a language, I wanted to know what
experiences accompany a hearing person beginning to learning ASL but mostly how does a deaf
person feel throughout their day? American Sign Language, or more commonly known as ASL, was
founded more than 200 thousand years ago from different sign languages around the time. ASL,
as suggested by its name, is not a universal sign language. If you were to go to and any other
country, a person might be at a loss when the signs do not match up. Most people assume that
sign language comes from just the hands, but everyday speakers add facial expression and some
movement of their body. ASL requires a hearing person to do things very differently than how they
normally act. For instance, when signing to a deaf or hard of hearing a person, one needs to face...

I entered the ASL club meeting that was located in a study group in Rivera library. It seemed
like any other meeting. The club talked about elections, and we started the lesson about learning
how to sign signs for family and animals. At first, there were a lot of signs given to us, then the
teacher, Jai, slowly point to each individual person and randomly choose a word for the person to
sign from the whiteboard. After that, we got into groups of two in order to find more about our
partners only through signing. This was very interesting because at the end, Jai made all of us talk
about our partners through signing, which I thought was a very interesting and effective way to

Government Surveillance Of The United States
Over the past few years, government surveillance in the United States has become a widely
debated issue with two completely different sides. The National Security Agency, a government
agency known for it s efforts in spying and surveillance, has been at the center of this issue since it
s founding in the 1950 s. The Cold War had just begun and the United Statesgovernment was doing
anything they could to find potential terrorists and communists. In fact, many famous people
including Einstein were being spied on by the government to find citizens with potential ties to
the Soviet Union. (New York Times New Details Emerge from the Einstein Files; How the FBI
Tracked His Phone Calls and His Trash) As the cold war came to an end in the early 90 s, NSA
spying seemed to come to an end as well. However, their efforts stepped up significantly after the
terror attacks that occurred on 9/11. After 9/11, the government was on high alert for anybody that
could be a potential terrorist. The NSA quickly began spying on foreigners suspected of being
involved in terrorist activities or associating with potential terrorists. (Wikipedia Mass Surveillance
in the United States) Soon after this, they started intercepting phone conversations and even internet
traffic through a program known as PRISM. This program was kept secret for quite a while until
NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked thousands of documents to reporters. (PBS How Edward
Snowden Leaked Thousands of NSA Documents)

Creon as the Hero of Sophocles Antigone Essay
Creon as the Hero of Antigone
The dilemma of identifying the true hero, or heroine, of Sophocles Antigone has tortured
students for years. It is indeed a difficult decision to make. The basis for this decision is what the
reader perceives to be Sophocles dramatic issue in this play. The dramatic issue of the play is
twofold: Antigone is a fanatic who is driven by her religious fever to bury the body of her criminal
brother, Polyneices, against the edict of Creon. In the second part, Sophocles shows how the new
King Creon s refusal to change his decision in the face of adversity is admirable, but at the same
time his political morals end up destroying his family. His fall from grace is tragic, whereas
Antigone s fall is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It will be good to die, so doing (burying Polyneices). I shall lie by his side, loving him as he has
loved me; I shall be a criminal but a religious one (Soph. Ant. 82 85), she confides to Ismene, her
sister. This is her attitude throughout the play: bravado in the face of the death sentence she
brought upon herself, unreasonably enthusiastic about the prospect of her own death. Even at
the ultimate moment, she has no fear of what death will bring. When I come to that other world
my hope is strong that my coming will be a welcome to my father, and dear to you, my mother,
and dear to you, my brother deeply loved (Soph. Ant. 951 955). According to Jebb, she is
possessed by a burning indignation (Jebb 1902 p.12) and it is this passion which clouds her
vision. Antigone s defense that she is acting in the name of the gods has no basis in the reality of
the play because there is no evidence of the gods taking part in the underlying actions of the play.
Antigone s zealous behavior is the antithesis of Creon s logical arguments. When Antigone is
arrested and brought before Creon, her statements allude to a conspiracy set up against her:
Antigone: I know that I will die of course I do even if you had not doomed me by proclamation.
(Here she believes that Creon

Compare And Contrast Marriage And Marriage
Do you know a couple that has been dating for years, but has never really taken the next step to
becoming married? Many couples have settled with just dating in today s world. This may be
because they haven t become ready for that next stage in life. Maybe they know how different
dating is from being married, how big of a change it ll be for them. A lot of adults who have kids
are not even married, this stems from generations of non marital relationships. As a result, their
kids see no reason for marriageor they may think that marriage is a bad thing because they have
been scarred seeing that their parents have divorced. Both dating and being married have their
positives as well as negatives.
Commitment to a marriage and in just dating is totally different. In a marriage, the commitment
between the two people is supposed to be a lifelong commitment, till death do you part . It is also
a very sacred form of commitment in that it shows your relationship with God as well as your family
. If you were to commit adultery, which means to cheat or lie on your partner, within your
marriage it could cause not only legal problems but, far more serious problems as well. On the
contrary, dating is just the beginning stages. Although it is best to stay committed, it is not as big
as a marriage. In a regular relationship, a person can cheat and not be held accountable for their
actions because it is not as serious as a marriage. Partners are still technically allowed to do as

Benefits Of The Prepaid Plan
We know college can be very expensive. There are many expenses for higher education including;
tuition, room and board, books, and extra cost. That being said, there are many programs and plans
that can assist with the cost. I will discuss 529 plans, Coverdell education savings account,
American Opportunity TaxCredit, Lifetime Learning Credits, and tuition fees.
There is a 529 Plan that can help the parent start preparing for their child s college. The plan will
help families save many for future college funding. The plan is setup into two plans, saving and
prepaid. Saving plans work by investing your money in shared funds. If the family were to
choose the savings plan, it comes with different options to invest the family s money in. The
account will either increase or decrease in value based on the investment. The prepaid plan will
allow the family to pre pay all of the cost for public higher education. The prepaid plan may also be
converted for a private college. Even though contributions are not deductible, the income in the
plan is federally tax free. Therefore, the income will not be taxed when they are removed to pay
for college. The 529 plan does not have to be reported on tax return. The donor will stay in control
of the account. The account owner can withdraw funds at any time, but non qualified withdrawals
will earn income tax and a ten percent tax. Anyone can qualify for a 529 plan. There are no limits
on income, age, or yearly contribution. (В§529)

The Culture of Dominicans Essay
THE CULTURE OF THE DOMINICANS 2 . Culture is the thoughts, communications, actions,
beliefs, values, and institutions racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups (Jarvis, 2012, p 14).
Every culture has its own view/ understanding about health care, health and illnesses. Although
what might be seen as acceptable in one culture, may not be acceptable in another, regardless of
where you are health care and culture will always exist. My definition of culture is the way

explanation as to why people get sick. Some believe illness is caused by natural factors such as a
dysfunction in the body; others believe illness is due to supernatural causes such as punishment
from evil ancestral spirits or somebody sends the evil spirits after them to harm them. When
asked about views of health and illness, she stated that most Dominicans interpret health as being

Dominicans believe that if you are not in bed, therefore you are healthy. Many Dominicans
believe in folk practice to promote health, for example: a problems that are seen as natural and
spiritual are treated with prayer and ritual. Problems that are believed to be supernatural are treated
with the help of a witch, healer, or a voodoo priest. For instance, the Catholics practice Spiritism and
Santeria by praying the saints to grant them favors and heal them. Some may consult a healer who

and distinct from all the world s languages, and I believe that there is language connection between
Zuni and Japanese.
Moreover, Zunian is not only the language and a way of communication; it also helps in teaching
traditions to younger generations. As time progresses, the quality and amount of language spoken
is affected by other languages such as English and Spanish. However, all generations can speak
both Zunian and English fluently today (5). The Zunian traditionally learned from elders and
parents by words of mouth. Many projects have been established to transform the knowledge
communicated in spoken language to written form such as books. The language is incorporated
into teaching methods in public schools and other cultural resources. For instance, the Zuni literacy
program was introduced into the School District in 1989. The Zuni Public School District media

Importance Of Credibility In Public Speaking Ordinarily, to establish credibility, public speakers should earn the audience s trust and respect by presenting themselves as authorities on the topic that they are speaking. • 8. The Foolishness Of Jim Crow Laws I m tired of all this foolishness. Everywhere I glance there are signs that read Whites and Colored. Jim Crow Laws are everywhere and they re a number of laws requiring racial segregation. Jim Crow Laws created segregation and discrimination against African Americans. People judge us by what they see, the color of our skin instead of us as an individual. Everyone s human and no one should feel any lesser than anybody, we all have feeling and sometimes I even feel terrible because of the way I get treated. Everyone should be equal no matter the shade of color because that doesn t mean you can t have the same rights as others. People see African Americans as less just because of the simple fact we re black. Therefore, I m going to take all my pride and stand up for what I believe. I m going to stop all this nonsense. I m going to make the world better and I will make history. I don t want people to suffer the way I did and still am, I want them to live happy. I want people to be happy of who they are and feel proud of themselves no matter what anybody has to say. I want people to have a future and succeed, I just want the best. I want people to follow in my footsteps and say King stood up for what he believed in and I want to do the same thing. I want to be an inspiration for the next generation and because I know every African Americanwants the same thing, which is respect and equality I will stand up for them. Even Though I know many people want this change, many people are not willing to do what it takes because of the simple fact there scared. Believe me I m scared too I don t know what s going to come out of this. Yes, I m running a really huge risk but I m doing it for my people. I m willing to give up everything and anything just for there to be world peace and equality. I ve been told to always strive for what I believe in and that s what I m going to do. I don t like the fact that white people feel as if they re better than blacks and colored. I m not saying that blacks and colored people are better either. I just don t know what lead people to think like this. In all reality the world would be a better and healthier place if there was no type of discrimination. Everyone points out the ... We live in a society where things can change in the blink of an eye, but is change always good? Could things change because things have been taken out of context? That is just what has happened to Thomas Jefferson. Has the true meaning of Thomas Jefferson s Separation between Church and State taken out of context today? One side defends that the true context remains intact. Saying that religion should play no part in the government what so ever. Saying that a political leadership based on religious convictions can harm the freedom of citizens who do not belong to the majority religion. Arguing that religion based attempts to limit reproductive rights have been particularly contentious in America. A Connecticut law banning the use of contraceptives was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1965. A similar Massachusetts law was defeated in 1972, followed the next year by the court s landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that a woman has the right to choose abortion. They also argue that the government should not allow prayer to be in schools. Praising the 1962, the U.S. Supreme Court banning of prayer and religious readings from public schools. • 10. Martin Heidigger s Response To Modernity Analysis To understand Martin Heidigger s response to Modernity one would have to examine the relationship between their notions of Man. Martin Heidigger s concept of Man, a being in the world, is very different from the Modern view of man as a thinking being. One believes that understanding comes from a purely subject object perspective wherein the understanding of the world around us is performed by our internal, completely separate, I because it is perfect and known innately while the other believes that to be a being is to actively Be , which is the same as Heidigger s notion of Being, and to Be is to exist or to be engaged in the world therefore connecting being, Being and the world forming the concept of Dasein or a being in the world. To understand Heidigger s response one would have to first understand what it is he s responding to. Cogito Ergo Sum summarizes what the Cartesian man is all about. • 11. Parenting Observation Previously, I was aware that infants require a relationship with their caregiver in order to be healthy. Infants are not able to provide themselves with their basic needs, but they also require a secure attachment to be mentally sound. In the past, we theorized that allowing infants to cry without providing them attention, or only allowing a wet nurse to care for them, increased their ability to be self reliant later in life. Now, we understand that individuals who are self reliant are able to be independent because they have their emotional and physical needs met. According to Erikson once children have established trust, they can feel secure enough to develop autonomy. This means that the Victorian era concept of refusing care for infants is not the most effective parentingtactic. However, infants and toddlers are not the sole product of their environment. In the movie, Forrest Gump was portrayed as a young man with both intellectual and physical disabilities; these characteristics categorized him abnormal/less of a man. These disabilities made Forrest experience devaluation on various levels in different stages of his life. His mother tried to protect him from such acts keeping him isolated and close to home. Forrest Gumps character was made fun of a lot, throughout the film. As a child, Forrest Gump had visual impairments that required him to wear leg braces. • 14. The Earl Of Rochester And Jonathan Swift When reading Eighteenth Century literature it is clear that the concept of one s privacy was non existent, particularly in poetry. Poets of this period were more aware of the growing public readership they had as a result of developments in education, and people from each class were now able to access poetry. This meant what was published had a greater impact on society, as poetry became increasingly [...] a more public form of expression (Goring, P. p.64) for writer s opinions on political and private matters. An imperfect picture is created of Rochester s private world compared to his public life, and the negative effects the early Eighteenth Century libertarian lifestyle has had on him. Swift on the other hand is trying to expose the private world of a lady s dressing room, something new to society at the time, and he does this through satirically comparing the public and private versions of women. Tita Chico argues in Privacy and Speculation in Eighteenth Century Britain that there were [...] exclusive privileges associated with the privacy of the gentleman s closet (p.42) which were now seen as being threatened by women s dressing rooms. The film The Queen is a great example of the limited power of Queen Elizabeth II in present day and shows the ceremonial purposes of her role. The main reasons that this role shift has happened is because monarchs abused their unlimited power repeatedly. Oliver Cromwell was one man who did not like the way his King, Charles I, was controlling the country and decided to do something about it. What some find startling is that Charles I reign ended by being sentenced to death, and by being beheaded under the weight of an axe. Charles I was disliked by many of his people because he was trying to change the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So bad that it has led to the current state of a limited monarchy that is regarded more for historical preservation purposes and tourism. Monarchies would be fantastic if the royal family is perfect and ruled fairly for the good of its people, but the lavish lives that have been historically accompanied to royalty have created an almost religious type of support. After years of royalty leading the public, its disciples begin to follow blindly and without any control of the government or say in decisions being made. If the position of King or Queen was low key such as the current prime minister, or presidential positions there might not be so much opposition from the public. As the royal family is busy having 10 course meals in lavish clothing and living spaces, its people are often in the streets with little money for food or basic clothing. This is the most condescending aspect of the status of royalty who are accompanied by butlers and servants around the clock. How can they relate to its common people if they don t know what it s like to live in the real world and not some fantasy? How can a person be in favor for a King to rule your country in absolute control who has never worked for any achievements other than being born by the right parents? Compare and contrast at least four characters, using specific examples to support your answer. William Shakespeare s play Much Ado about Nothing is one of his many creations during the Renaissance and Elizabethan Era. This is one of Shakespeare s most famous play that is still performed to this day. I was able to witness students from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts production perform this play. Shakespeare exposes the dark and ugly truth about gender inequality that occurred during the Elizabethan Era. In the Messina society, the men were superior to women, and the women to feel inferiors to the men. However, in this play, Beatrice is seen as an exception as she says Oh that I were a man (The University of North Carolina School of the Arts production). For women, honor was based on virginal chastity, while men were honored based on their social rank and camaraderie. He convinced the Congolese people that he wanted to colonize Africa. Little did they know, it was the start of Leopold taking over the Congo, stealing their riches, and enslaving the Congolese people. Adam Hochschild s King Leopold s Ghost illustrates the five themes of AP World History in the following ways: Hochschild s book applies to the first theme, Interaction between Humans and the Environment because the book deals with diseases, migration, population growth, and technology. For example, the author mentions on page 10 how a village near Diogo CГ¤o s stone pillar south shore of the Congo River estuary became a slave port. Over 5,000 African slaves were forcely migrated across the Atlantic. Many were shipped directly to the Americas and others were captured by African slave dealers who bought slaves from local chiefs and headmen. To add onto the reasons the book applies to this theme, technology is human knowledge which involves tools and other systems. One may use technology for manufacturing, creating artifacts, communication, transportation, etc. In the book, the Congolese people were without writing however, they forged copper into jewelry and iron into weapons. Also, when the Europeans came to Congo, they brought many diseases with them such as smallpox and sleeping sickness which caused many Congolese to die. Next, the theme Development and Interaction of Cultures deals with religion, philosophies, art, such as: dance, painting, sculpting, and how believed systems changed overtime. In the book, the author mentions the Kuba people, Africa s greatest artists. They work in masks, sculpture, textiles, and elaborately carved tools. Also, in chapter 11, in the year 1897, Leopold had a world fair where the Congolese people had to dance, cook, and drummed. To add on, when King Leopold came to Africa and manipulated people into thinking he was trying to help the country, the Congolese people believed in a term the white man s burden . • 37. An Example Of Manna Walking Rhetorical Analysis 12/06/2015 Manna Walking Summative Part A Using my prior knowledge and details inferred from the short story, Manna Walking by Dawn Karima Pettigrew, I am able to tell what Food Stamps, A P and Navajo are. Furthermore by using examples in the text given by the author, I am able to identify three examples of strong writing in the text such as the concrete and selective language the purpose of the text, and the voice created by the author. Firstly from my prior knowledge I know that Food Stamps are a system of aid used in the United States of America for families that require benefits as a method of surviving hard times. From the cashier s reaction in the story of she sneers as Manna pays her with many coloured food stamps , I am able... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She uses her vocabulary and word choice very efficiently that presents an image to the reader from the very first line. She describes the cashier as the kind of blonde poured out of a bottle. This immediately conjures an image of a classic teenage girl brimming with insecurity that has to judge others and dye her hair to hide her flaws. This shows an interesting contrast as the one that is being viewed as inferior in this situation is Manna yet she is the one that is the most comfortable with who she is. A second example of concrete and selective language is the inclusion of small details that helps to draw a picture for the reader. For example when Manna is leaving the grocery store parking lot, she walks away from the burned out ampersand on the neon supermarket sign, and the sale on sprinklers and the almost genuine Navajo ashtrays. By including these details, the reader is taken into the story in their mind and it helps them to empathise with her situation. It is only if you are actually in a place that you are able to identify small details; the author including them into the story really helps to paint an image in the reader s mind. For example without the inclusion of such small details, then the reader would never be able to accurately imagine the location or Manna s situation, something I believe the author is trying to achieve with this ... Using three civilizations as examples, describe the concept of the Axial Age The concept of axial age was introduced into the sphere of philosophical knowledge by German existentialist philosopher Karl Jaspers for characterizing the period of ancient history during about the 8th to the 3rd century BC. In this period of time we have developed a fundamentally new religious beliefs and doctrines that promoted human and cultural values of the era. Jaspers described the Axial Age as an interregnum between two ages of great empire, a pause for liberty, a deep breath bringing the most lucid consciousness. Jaspers argued that during the Axial Age, the spiritual foundations of humanity were laid simultaneously and independently in China, India, Persia, Judea and Greece. And these are the foundations upon which humanity still subsists today. Consider, for example Greece, India and China. Ancient Greece up to the 6th century BC was on a par with other civilizations by the level of spiritual development. Hellenic culture range was one of those, whose coordinate system covers the problems of family, God, nature and Eros. As a general rule, the mentality of this culture consisted the two vectors Apollonian and Dionysian. Dionysian beginning was aimed at the satisfaction of the instinctual needs, as opposed to the Apollonian, whose essence consisted of creative and scientific elements. With an emphasis on value comes feelings of jealousy and envy. This is only natural and can be seen when Jack decides that the conch should only be used by those he sees as worthy. Both books are a fan of the hardboiled detective and are set within the state of California. The main characters of both books share many different traits that define them as hardboiled detectives. To be a hardboiled detective one must have the utmost attention to detail, be independent of personal ties, must live within the hustle and bustle of city life, and must be a strong man always willing to be physical if needed. Within both of these novels we see Spade and Marlowe match up with many of these characteristics, while also being developed under different circumstances to result in different personalities and stories. I believe that both Spade and Marlowe, in their own unique ways, embody what it means to be a hardboiled detective. From the very beginning of both novels, the first things that a reader notices about each detective is how he describes people and places around him. Although the Maltese Falcon is written in the third person, we see very vivid descriptions of the characters within. For a reader, these great, vivid descriptions really help the book come alive as though watching a movie. While reading this novel, I noticed myself seeing these descriptions as less of the narrator s description and more of how Sam Spadesees the world and people around him. The pathetic city drunks and the pitiful alcoholic parents of the warm water sisters, Junior, Thomas, and Victor ring like wake up calls to the social problems faced by the Indian people. The representation of alcoholism in the text, Reservation Blues, highlights a stereotypical social image of the drunken Indian. Despite the verisimilitude of Alexian portrayal of alcoholism and its impact upon the lives of the Native Americans, Alexie does not aim to put the social problems of economic instability, poverty, or cultural oppression into perspective (Coyhis, pp. 157 66). Instead, alcoholism and drinking are sensationalized: Lester is the most accomplished drunk on the Spokane Reservation (Schmidt, 2011), a notoriety that wins him tribal hero status. Victor, incapable of coping with rejection, turns to the bottle for solace like a tragic failed artist. Sherman Alexie deals with the problem of alcohol in his work, as it is something inherent to the American Indians. Maybe, the reason is that alcoholism was a big problem in his family. For example, in his short story, The Only Traffic on the Reservation Doesn t Flash Red Anymore of the novel The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, he tells the story of a young boy who is considered a reservation basketball star, but his promising future is destroyed by alcohol. ASL, as suggested by its name, is not a universal sign language. If you were to go to and any other country, a person might be at a loss when the signs do not match up. The National Security Agency, a government agency known for it s efforts in spying and surveillance, has been at the center of this issue since it s founding in the 1950 s. The Cold War had just begun and the United Statesgovernment was doing anything they could to find potential terrorists and communists. The dramatic issue of the play is twofold: Antigone is a fanatic who is driven by her religious fever to bury the body of her criminal brother, Polyneices, against the edict of Creon. This is her attitude throughout the play: bravado in the face of the death sentence she brought upon herself, unreasonably enthusiastic about the prospect of her own death. Even at the ultimate moment, she has no fear of what death will bring. When I come to that other world my hope is strong that my coming will be a welcome to my father, and dear to you, my mother, and dear to you, my brother deeply loved (Soph. Ant. 951 955). Antigone s zealous behavior is the antithesis of Creon s logical arguments.
