Professional Objectives Program
Discuss your professional objectives both short and long term. What has motivated you to apply
to this program? My organization Penske Truck Leasing has been experiencing a sharp decline in
the revenue generated from its full service leasing. Results of initial sales analysis concluded that
the inflow of the new customers for full service leasing has been growing steadily; thus to increase
revenue, the focus needs to be on the renewals for the existing customers. The company realizes
that a lack of validated customer loyalty drivers prevents effective focus on customer retention and
thus directly affects profitability. Challenges with data availability and business metrics have made
attempts to measure and diagnose our service delivery and customer experience, both, difficult and
inconclusive. In order to address this challenge, the organization has launched an initiative to build
a customer analytics system that can achieve a single view of customer experience and make
decisions about how best to acquire and retain customers, recognize high value customers and
proactively interact with them. I have been identified as the lead architect for the BI and analytics
team that is going to implement this project. I am also privileged to be associated with an initiative
that is directed towards human resource analytics that analyzes the performance and profitability
that the work force brings to the organization. The aim of this project is to align core workforce

suggestions (when the first launch did not end well). Homer then said that Quentin, who is the
smartest student, in his class could help. His friends told Homer that is not the best choice since he
was the least popular ,and the weird student in his school. Homer still went to Quentin during lunch,
and Homer started to ask questions about rockets. Homer wanted to continue their discussion in the
school library, but Quentin did not agree and

Erysipelas or St. Anthony s Fire and Aetiology are Painful...
Description
Erysipelas, also referred to as St. Anthony s fire, is a rapid bacterial skin infection involves the
dermis and hypodermis of the skin that result with severe pain and systemic symptoms (Kilbum,
Featherstone, Higgins Brindle, 2010). As O Connor Paauw (2010) described, it is presented mostly
with shiny and erythematous plaque, well demarcated and indurated.
Erysipelas commonly occurred in the legs, 90% of the cases, then involves in the face which have a
characteristic butterfly distribution on both cheeks and nose follows by arms and thighs
(Bonnetblanc Bedane, 2003; Linder, Johansson, Thulin, Hertzen, Morgelin, Christensson,
...Akesson, 2010; Davis, Cole Benbenisty, 2012).
The typical symptoms are include,
пЃ¬fever, chills and shaking
пЃ¬malaise
пЃ¬red, firm, swollen skin
пЃ¬marked lesion with raised border or blisters
пЃ¬burning pain, pruritus, tenderness and sore
пЃ¬swollen glands
Aetiology
Streptococci, streptococcus pyogenes, is the predominant cause which group A affects mostly on
facial infections and non group A affects the lower extremity (Gunderson Martinello, 2012). These
toxins are contributing the rapid inflammation which they normally live on body surface without
causing problem, then once they penatrated via tinea pedia or eczema that causes the skin breakage
and developing erysipelas (Gabillot Carre Roujeau, 2007).
The possible risk factors are,

The Salmonella Case Study
Step 1: Identify Preliminary Issues
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the multistate outbreak of human
salmonella linked with live and frozen feeder rodents. Salmonella is a human and animal pathogen
that has many different serotypes, but one of the most common serotypes is Salmonella
Typhimurium, which this specific case focuses on. Salmonella can easily spread to people that are
in contact with infected animals, including reptiles, amphibians, rodents, birds, livestock, as well as
dogs and cats (PHAC, 2014). Moreover, animals carry this bacteria even when they are normal and
healthy. Nevertheless, pet foods can be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria, and can infect
the pet as well (PHAC, 2014). In this case, pets that have consumed the infected rodents, also carry
the bacteria which transmits the pathogen to humans. According to the study, the key causes of this
infection are due to the fact that that rodents sold as food are associated with the pet reptiles and
amphibians through direct or indirect contact (CDC, 2014). This particular outbreak surfaced in
2009 in the United Kingdom and in 2010 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Salmonella pathogen in mice and rats are most likely subclinical which means that clinical
signs include diarrhea, weight loss, hunched posture, ruffled coat, and conjunctivitis. And for
rodents that have been dead which are served as frozen feeder rodents, labrotsists can perform a
necropsy and check their spleens, livers, or intestines to check for the pathogen (Criver, 2009).
Also, a specific seline broth can be used to test for salmonella in the culture (Criver, 2009).
Incoming rodents should always be quarantined to routinely test for salmonella and since treatments
for salmonella infected animals are rare, their environments should be sterilized properly (Criver,

My Identity Crisis
My identity crisis started when I was about 9 years old. The realization that I was different from
friends, family, and my classmates were scary and hard to bare. As a young child, we are taught
and framed to be a certain way, think a certain way, and live a certain way according to the
family structure. Like most young girls I often fantasized about my wedding. What type of dress
I was going to wear, what colors I would pick and what type of dress my wife would choose. My
fantasies were often disrupted by the sound of my mothers voice instructing me to complete a task,
or letting me know she was home. At that very moment internal shame, and denial would set in.
This is not normal, a wife, why was I thinking about a wife? I don t like girls! I like Josh. That s
who I will marry, Josh. This type of self doubt and shame I would live with for years. What was
wrong with me, who am I, and why was my desires so different from my friends? Growing up I
kept pushing these feelings aside to follow the social norm. Often, I had thought about telling
my best friend, but the fear of being rejected or outed were way too much for a 14 year old to
deal with. I would go along with my friends, laugh about how cute the new boy was, put posters
on my walls of the most popular teen idols, and drool over the cute guy in the mall. Eventually I
would detach myself from a lot of my girlfriends and form friendships with guys. Guys were much
easier for me to relate to. I didn t have to talk about

Athletic Training Elitism
Majority of young people s lives, they are constantly pondering just which college to attend or
what profession is best. In most cases, individuals who attend college are not aware or decided
on what major will be pursued. To self reflect and figure out what exactly is the right fit, a large
portion of time and effort was spent during the school year to come to the college of choice. As to
why it is the best fit in preference, based off research and perception, is the college, Mount St.

The Flaws In Early American History Textbooks
To begin, a major flaw in the way American history courses are taught is due to the fact that
textbooks do not allow students to form their own opinions, for everything is presented as fact .
This is exemplified through the way early American life is taught. For example, a controversial
topic is the specific destination of the Mayflower during the Pilgrim s journey to America. Some
historians believe their arrival in Massachusetts was on purpose to be far from Anglican control
in Virginia, while others believe violent storms lead them off track, or there were just navigation
errors. The flaw then arises for all textbooks only pick one, and present it as fact to their readers
for they believe it is the students only way to learn about the past (81). However, a student needs...

American history textbooks always favor Plymouth Rock as the United States birthplace, for earlier
settlements like Jamestown lacked moral and even participated in the first use of chemical
warfare against a tribe, after forcing them to teach the colonists how to farm and taking them as
prisoners (84). However, textbooks overlook this for the more favorable Pilgrims in order to
prevent students from feeling bad about their early ancestors. However, this mindset strips
students abilities to apply their knowledge and come to conclusions on what went right and what
went wrong with the settlements in order to reach an educated perspective on their past.
Textbooks believe it necessary to present everything as fact in order for children to learn and be
right , when in reality it hinders students ability to think for themselves and use the evidence they
do have to reason and come to their own conclusions, which is necessary to promote a deeper level
of understanding of America s past and

And the 500GB hard drives on all of the laptops in this report are more than up to the task of
storing all of Sharon s music. To use internet in her beauticians, I would recommend Sharon
would be best to look at some sort of USB dongle. However I would recommend she downloaded
all of her music at home so as she didn t eat into her data allowance.
As for e mail Sharon could create two separate e mail accounts with windows hotmail as she could
personalise her e mail addresses to her liking.
Conclusion
The laptop I am going to recommend is the ACER Aspire S3 391 Ultrabook.Overall it is the best
laptop for Sharon s business and personal needs. It provides her with the software she needs to
create her own advertisements, invoices, letters and to keep track of her accounts for her
business. It also provides her with the ability to surf the internet and go shopping online as well
as download music and due to the Acer having a DVD re writer allow her to create her own CDs
through windows media player. The Acer also is the lightest laptop in this comparison and therefore
will be easy for Sharon to transport between her beauticians and home.

Relationships And Literary Devices In Narcopolis By Jeet...
Sanskriti Merchant SYBA 345,141259 A.ENG. 4.01 19th January 2016 Role of relationships
and literary devices in Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil Some might argue that this literary masterpiece
is a book about wasted lives, but it isn t. It s a book about selling one s soul and taking a great
amount of satisfaction from it. This unapologetic portrayal of a life devoted to drugs is Thayil s
debut novel from the perspective of an outsider slowly gaining the status of someone who
belongs. It might be considered to be close to his own biopic, a fact that Thayil does not try to
conceal. It is an enchanting tale of Mumbai s hazy world of opium addiction in the 1970s when the
underbelly of Bombay was disjointed from the glitz and glamour of the new found city. The book...

Thayil confesses that he believes that the only way to write about opium is through long, open
ended sentences. The city, as given by the title, is the central character of the novel. Thayil
named his book Narcopolis because Bombay seemed to me a city of intoxication, where the
substances on offer were drugs and alcohol, of course, but also god, glamour, power, money and
sex . The other characters swarm in and out of the city, all a mere blip in the working of the
mechanism that is this metropolis. However, the author does not underrate the importance of
their lives. On the contrary, the novel portrays their lives as if they were indispensable to the
decade. As if their very existence made the sullen streets of Bombay what they are today. As if
every street has a Dimple, a Rumi, and a Lee. Kevin Rushby s statement I wished that this book,
like some long and delicious opium induced daydream, would go on and on. gives one a precise

R s Four Freedoms
F.D.R s Four Freedoms Speech
Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as president of the United States of America from 1933 until
1945 and is most famously known for his handling of one of the most difficult periods in
American history, a time plagued by economic depression and war. FDR, as he came to be
known, started a New Deal which focused on relief, recovery, and reform. He gave hope to the
American people, ensuring to them that, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. FDR changed
the policy of isolationism, and turned the United States into a world power. He was a bold
personality, and a strong leader, someone who led through his actions, rather than his words.
Roosevelt suffered from polio, but never let the disease change him. His determination to help
the American people ultimately allowed him to become known as one of America s greatest
presidents. FDR gave many famous and opinionated speeches in order to encourage American
involvement in domestic and foreign conflicts, and used these speeches as a form of propaganda.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt s 1941 State of the Union Address, which came to be known as his
Four Freedoms speech, spoke to a worried America on the verge of America s entrance into the
Second World War. His speech characterized American identity, created a sense of nationalism, and
spelled out four essential freedoms that people worldwide should possess.

Distracted Driving and Cell Phones
Today, one of the major sources of automobile accidents is distracted driving due to cell phone
use. Driver distraction can be defined as the diversion of attention away from activities critical
for the safe driving toward a competing activity (Young 3). The dangers of driving while using a
cell phone cannot be overstated, but drivers still use their cell phones even though they are
illegal. According to a survey, About 2 out of 10 (18%) report that they have sent text messages
or emails while driving; about half (49%) of those 21 to 24 year olds report doing so (NHTSA).
This indicates that millions of people use their cell phones while driving everyday, and with the
increased availability and affordability of cell phones, the risk can only increase. In this paper the
topics that will be discussed in regard to cell phone use while driving include the brief history of
the cell phone, talking while driving, texting while driving, the part of the community most
affected by using cell phones, alternatives to reduce incidents, the laws that have been enacted, and
the organizations that endorse no texting while driving. In a time when rapid access to
information is valuable, cell phones have bridged the gap between the information and the user.
The cell phone came into existence when Martin Cooper, at Motorola, developed the first portable
handheld radio for the Chicago police department. The first cell phone, Motorola DynaTac, was
over 2.5 pounds and could be only used to

The health care industry has been changing dramatically in the United States over the past two

My Goal Of Becoming An Artist
Futures I craved in the past were nothing compared to my goal of becoming an artist. It was the
dream I never considered to continue into a career because of stereotypes such as, Few people

life, but this is the most important one I developed on my own. I am excited and exceedingly

careers that I wanted to peruse in the past consisted of being a veterinarian, a teacher, an
astronomer, an entrepreneur, and a lawyer. I had specific reasons for choosing these careers, but
like most occupations that young children choose to pursue, my choices were not what I was
truly passionate about. There were also many factors those jobs involved that would make me
unhappy, such as being a vet often requires performing surgery and performing vaccinations. It
was also based on what my mindset was at the time, for example, how I convinced myself that I
was destined to be a lawyer for the sole reason that I was a gifted argurer, which was the
equivalent of a moody pre teen. Throughout the entirety of these phases, I created and progressed in

Tragedy
In September 11th A National Tragedy, James Peck writes about how the tragic event, September
11th has affected our world today. Peck states that tragedy is a word that has commonly been
overused by Americans throughout news articles and magazines when a significant event happens.
When referring to September 11th, the crashing of the twin towers, this is a tragic event.
Peck states, I do know life is life and theatre is theatre (735), but we as Americans immediately turn
life events into narrations where we ourselves play the roles of the characters and the plot is the
problem that is affecting us in our life. Turning significant events into narrations allows Americans

for truth and justice. Also, on page 139, there is a chart that describes the similarities and
differences of these three philosophers. This source will immensely help the paper because of its
reliability and information. Another source that will be used for the research paper is focused in on
a certain philosopher. That lover of learning is Aristotle. Aristotle focused more on human belief,
thought, and knowledge. The article is titled Aristotle on Consciousness . The excerpt really
goes into depth on Aristotle s views and beliefs in one s conscious. According to the book,
Aristotle believed that Consciousness played a big part in the minds of people in the early ages.
The source is very credible because it comes from a critically acclaimed book called Mind . The
specific page is page 751. This topic may be very interesting to include in the paper because it
something that very much is in effect today. All people have a conscious and it would be very
fascinating to write about Aristotle s theory on the topic. Overall, this source can add a lot of
quality information to the research paper. An additional source that will be used in the final paper
relates to Socrates beliefs. The article states some views that the philosopher, Socrates, has the

The Effects Of Global Warming On Our Economy
Global warming is The increase in Earth s average surface temperature due to rising levels of

important commitment for all the nations. Natural disasters, virus and diseases are consequences of
changes of temperature, the emissions of carbon gases weaken the ozone layer, water and food

Other argument for withdraw, was that the implementation of the treaty was inefficient and unfair
involving just the developed countries and excluding from restrictions some of the biggest emitters
of gases like China and India, because they are considered developing countries. Before the Federal
Government began to focus in this problem, the private sector was trying to create programs for the
reduction of pollution, but without the political and financial support of the government, all these
efforts were insufficient.
There are some federal laws to protect our environment and health. The Clean Water Act which
prohibits sending pollutants into waters by requiring specific sites that discharge materials. The
Clean Air Act has been improving the air quality since 1960. Some of the most recent energy

The first half of the 20th century saw the rise of some single party states and the rise to power of
some of the famous and controversial figures. Leaders of these states, such as Hitler, Mao and

According to the situations of their countries, they announced varies kinds of different economic
policies to boost the economy, which affects the country in many different aspects. This gives an
interest for me to study how the economic policies affect the whole country s development.
Also, both Stalin and Mao were famous and controversial leaders in the 20th century. They brought
success to their countries but also caused harms to it. This topic actually provides a great chance to
have an sight into two valuable leaders and quest their ups and downs in USSR and China
respectively.
Besides that, the world is now protean. Each move or policies of a country can easily influence
others. Mao and Stalin both played a significant role in the 20th century world. Therefore, it is
interesting for me to explore the content of their economic policies of the two countries.
The economic policies of the two communist countries affected the world situation in the early
20th century. Therefore, I aim at finding out how the economic policies affect the country itself
and the world s situation. Also, I aim to find out in what way did the economic policies lead to
modernization in USSR and China. Besides that, I will compare the economic policies of Stalin

Hyperactivity In Children Experiment Essay
This experiment is for kids between the age of four and six will be tested with a new drug to
diminish hyperactivity. In this experiment there should be three groups with three different
ages: four years, five years, and six years old. In each group there should be an equal number of
girls and boy. For each experimental group there will be a control group. Children will be chosen
through arbitrary obligation to be placed in the experimental group or the control group. The six
groups will be placed in a kid familiar environment, such as a play area, for one hour. The play
area will be in a public area such as a park so that the kids parent can perceive their comportment

Some specimens of hyperactivity the mothers can chose from include extreme running, blaring,
jumping, agitation, etc. At the end of the experiment the parents will be asked to grade their
children on a scale of one to ten of hyperactivity, with one being less hyper and ten being more
frenzied. Lastly, the results will be put into two slabs. The first slab will be the control group
with a sum of the scores from before on one side and the sum from after on the other side (the same
will be done for the experimental group results). The greater the difference between the before
scores and after scores will allow for a valid conclusion. For example, if the total for the control
group before the drug was 50 and total after the drug were 29, the difference would be 21. If the
same were done for the experimental group with a score of 48 before the drug and a score of 16

Abstract I went out to find what students thought about a catholic education. I wanted to see how
students thought a catholic education compared to other educations. I went out and interview
multiple people who had some sort of catholic education background. Some were catholic students
their whole life and some had transferred between catholic schools and public schools. From the

Writing Themes In The Cold Equations By Tom Godwin
There are countless stories that one can read and forget about the next day, however this is not
one. The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin is such a moving story with so many incorporated
themes that leave an impacting message in the reader s life. I really enjoyed the writing style of
Tom Godwin. He starts with a phrase that gets the reader s attention immediately and gets us
wondering why him not being alone is such a big deal. After this he gives us the answer and
some background information about the frontier and jumps right into the story again. There s a
lot of intensity to start with, but when we are introduced to Marilyn the author gives us some
relief and the way he does this is by using literary language such as similes and metaphors and
sarcasm. I love this contrast because it doesn t stay at one level if not it changes in a way that is
entertaining for the reader and it allows us to want to read more. Not only this, but Tom Godwin
uses a lot of situational and dramatic ironyto add to the intensity and story. Another reason this story
stands out is because of all the themethat is incorporated and not only the fact that there are many
things but the technique used to incorporate the theme. Many stories use the characters difficult
situations or a symbol to introduce theme. On the other hand, Tom Godwin uses situations that the
reader can relate to and not only creates emotion within the characters, but within the reader. Some
themes I came across were: your actions

Vehicle Pollution Essay
1.6Vehicular Pollution Problems in India
Vehicles are one of the major sources of air pollution in major cities. The air pollution due to
vehicles can be attributed to following:
a)High vehicle density in Indian urban centres result in air pollution build up near the roadways and
at traffic intersections.
b)Older vehicles are predominant in vehicle vintage. These older vehicles are grossly polluting
though in cities like Delhi grossly polluting vehicles have been phased out.
c)Inadequate inspection and maintenance facilities result in high emission of air pollutants from
vehicles. Emission can be reduced by proper and regular inspection and maintenance of vehicles.
d)There is large number of two stroke two wheelers in most of the cities and these two wheelers are
a significant contributor of air pollution.
e)Adulteration of fuel and fuel products also result in high emissions from vehicles.
f)Improper traffic management system and road conditions also result in build up of air pollutants
near the roadways as the emissions are higher when the vehicle is idling.
g)Absence of effective mass rapid transport system and intra city railway networks has resulted in
people using their own vehicles for commuting to workplace. This has resulted in uncontrolled
growth of vehicles.
h)High population exodus to the urban centres has also resulted in increase in number of vehicles
resulting in high levels of vehicular air pollution.

Biological Theories Of Positivist Criminology
In this great big world of science, a theory is not only a conscience thought it is a reality of one s
illusion for describing an idea a guess of something. A theory presents a concept or idea that is
testable. The term theory is used with surprising frequency in everyday language. It is often used
in to mean a guess, hunch, or supposition. (Cherry, 2017). Theories are applied to give an example
in psychologyto comprehend the behaviors, feelings, and the thoughts of humans.
The main thought behind positivist criminology is that individuals, who commit crimes, are born
that way and not made into lawbreakers; at the end of the day, it is the idea of the individual, which
decision is in criminal competence. Also, the positive criminologist ... Show more content on

This theory was started by Sigmund Freud, the originator of this psychoanalytic theory.
Psychoanalytic theories of crime causation are associated with the work of Sigmund Freud (1856
1939) and his followers. Freud did not theorize much about behavior per se, but a theory of crime
causation can be inferred from his more general theory of human behavior and its disorders (Bohm
Vogel, 2011, p 55). It is suitable to say Freud felt that human behavior, including brutal behavior,
was the result of oblivious powers working inside the human mind. Freud likewise felt that early
adolescence encounters profoundly affected youthful and grown up behavior.
In essence, positivism believes that the criminal is neither responsible nor accountable for their
actions as they were a victim of circumstance. Biological positivism attributes criminal tendencies to
physical or mental characteristics. Psychological positivism credited psychological dynamics
predisposing an individual to engage in criminal acts (Bernstein, 2009).

Why Should You Be Chosen As A Staff Member

Why should you be chosen as a staff member: I like to set myself with various projects within
Minecraft, I try my best in accomplishing them until they are completed. I also like participating
in other projects with other players willingly sharing my materials with them. Projects that I
helped out in include Vacre s Quartz Village and Waterbase, Jallofrice s SkyTown and
Minecraft_Mann s PvP Mansion. To begin with, I feel I should take part in the staffing
community here because I ensure a large portion of qualified time as well as extreme
experiences and a sincere inclination in moderating over the chat and providing the necessary
satisfaction to players in need of any particular assistance. I am a person who shares a natural
obligation and heavy dedication to those in need of a correct moderation. I will be there to help
them with confusion/questions for hours worth of time as well! My highest priority when it
comes to staffing is that I focus on most is moderating over servers. I am not really a person who
wants to dedicate themselves to formulating new structures or residing to head to head combat. I
find it more intriguing to supply players with a jubilant sense of feeling from my overall
performance. I would be sure to keep dissonance from progressing to ghastly circumstances. I would
basically focus on the whole idea of my existence to staffing within this community,

Twelve O Clock High
Twelve O clock High Leadership and Management styles have played an important role in the
learning in Outcome Assessment and Quality Management. In class I have learned the positives
and negatives that come from the different leadership styles presented. The movie, Twelve O
clock High, is a film that takes place in 1943 outside Nazi Germany. It depicts the 918th Bomb
Group and the problems that they are having. Throughout the movie we are presented with
multiple leadership styles from the commanding officers; Colonel Davenport, Brigadier General
Savage, and Major General Pritchard of Pine Tree. Through Colonel Davenport, Major General
Pritchard, and Brigadier General Savage at the start of the film we can see the distinct difference...

they have forgotten. Upon return from a successful mission Savage has a run in with Pritchard.
Pritchard asks why Savage did not return when the return call was made. Savage tells him it
must have been a radio malfunction , which it clearly was not. After an argument Savage tells
Pritchard that the men deserve recognition for their success and that there might be some Radio
Malfunctions in the future also. Savage is starting to move up in his relationship status while he
is trying to motivate the 918. Savage is starting to feel for these men but he is also getting tired
because they have not removed their transfer requests and they still are not exhibiting any pride
in their work. Motivation Savage calls Lieutenant Bishop, a Medal of Honor nominee, into his

magazines I will be examining are; teenage with the magazine Sneak, twenty something s with the

Glamour is aimed mainly at late teens to late twenties. When flicking through the magazine, I
noticed that there was more text and adverts. This reflects how the age group has more time and
disposable income. Also, Glamour was the most expensive magazine, being ВЈ1.90 and included a
website, (see figure 2,) which again indicates a higher disposable income and extra time. The front
cover yet again includes an hourglass shaped celebrity, but she is older, although she still conforms
to the dominant ideology for a young female. The magazine includes the latest fashion and make
up styles, but on a much larger scale when compared to Sneak. MASSIVE FASHION SPECIAL:
1322 HOT NEW LOOKS. It again includes problem pages, but the problems are mainly on
lifestyle or sex, instead of dating. Glamour also advertises to the stereotypical women using its
front page with the advert; 20% off SHOES At Faith for every reader. Magazines can use this
effectively, because it represents the expectations reflected by society and the media.
Women s Own is mostly aimed at middle aged housewives, although older people do read it,
because it would give them a chance of extended youth. The front cover for the magazine, (see
figure 3,) is dramatically different. It has older soap celebrities, who some women would be able
to relate to. The people on the cover are less bothered about

Atonement Literary Techniques Essay
In order to explore the fundamental themes of Atonement, Ian McEwan employs a plethora of
literary techniques. For instance, the concepts of children impersonating adults, the author as a
god, the corruption inside marriage and war, and misinterpretation of adult ideas, are scrutinised
by McEwan. McEwan dissects how people undertake roles unsuitable for their position in
society through the employment of literary techniques. After Lola s first encounter with her
rapist Marshall, she is described as wearing a blue satin sheath dress , something much more
mature than the expected garb of an adolescent. This dress is juxtaposed against Lola s childish
features, such as her loose hair and bare [feet] , generating pathos for Lola, as she attempts to
comprehend her traumatic encounter through sartorial precocity. In the same scene, 13 year old
Briony labels the twins little kids , consolidating Lola s troubling position of maturity. In
addition, McEwan utilises imagery to portray Briony s attempt to act as both an adult and God
after interrupting Cecilia and Robbie s lovemaking. In order to simultaneously cast herself as the
hero and Robbie as the villain, Briony describes Robbie as huge and wild , as if he were a beast
who had trapped Cecilia. In contrast to the imagery of Robbie, Briony details herself as Cecilia s
protector , an intruder to Robbie s malicious activity. By misinterpreting the scene through the use
of imagery, Briony imbues herself with

Essay about Anticipatory Grief
Grief is a universal reaction experienced by all of us at some time in our lives. The capacity that
makes each of us capable of warm, satisfying relationships also leaves us vulnerable to sadness,
despair, and grief when such relationships are disrupted (Carr, 1969). Regardless of the actual
relationship that might have existed prior to the death, we have the tendency to idealize the
relationship once death has occurred and we expect expressions of normal grief. Unfortunately,
normal grief is what society expects, but the needs of the individual prerequisites putting a label on
grief. Because society influences our behavior through the secondary reinforcement of social
approval during this time, we are not looking at the primary... Show more content on

When examining whether anticipatory grief hinders conventional grief, Clayton, Halikas,
Maurice, and Robbins (1973) found more depressive symptoms in the first month of bereavement
in women who had experienced anticipatory grief. This would coincide with the theory of learned
helplessness. If we cannot control our environment (death of a loved one) then we are at the
mercy of the environment. For this reason there is no contingency between our response and the
consequences. This leads to associative, motivational, and emotional deficits. The individual has
no motive for anything, is under extreme stress, and becomes depressed, all leading to learned
helplessness. In other words, our world has turned upside down and we have no control over it.
Researchers also found that after one year these widows were no better off than widows who
lacked such preparation.
In a study done by Gilliland and Fleming (1998), three groups of spouses, were looked at to see
if anticipatory grief and conventional grief were similar. The groups consisted of group one
Palliative Care Group (PCG), spouses of the terminally ill, a control group (CG) consisting of
individuals with healthy spouses to account for the level of grief symptoms associated with stress
and loss in a normative sample. The second control group, a chronic care group (CCG) was

A Rhetorical Examination of The Homeless and Their...
In The Homeless and Their Children , author Jonathon Kozol explains how poverty and
homelessness can go hand in hand, but he also shows his readers that the government in New
York City during the 1980 s did not really attempt to assist those in need. The author shows us
how the homeless and illiterate struggled by sharing with us an interview with a young woman
called Laura who resided in a massive welfare hotel. Kozol did not find it necessary to write this
piece in a persuasive tone, or a compassionate tone, or even an angry tone to get his message
across. He did not need to include a multitude of statistics to convince his readers that homelessness
, illiteracy, and governmental apathy were issues. As stated in the introductory... Show more content

Later on in the story, Kozol addresses to the audience the situation of Laura s budget. By
providing Laura s report of her exact figures of her income and expenditures, he caters again to
the reader s logical reasoning skills by giving us a more precise and mathematical understanding
of her plight. Also, Kozol writes about the process of churning: Those on welfare , the
Community Service Society of New York said in a report published in 1984, may be suddenly
removed from welfare rolls for reasons unrelated to their actual need, or even to eligibility
standards (Kozol 306). By giving us a direct quote and a documented source, the readers can
assume that this statement is true and we can make a better, more informed opinion on this
topic. Lastly, he uses a metaphor to describe the appearance of Laura s children: In the room are
two boys with dark and hollowed eyes and an infant girl. A third boy is outside and joins us later.
The children have the washed out look of the children Walker Evans photographed for Let Us
Now Praise Famous Men (Kozol 306). By reporting all these things to his readers, Kozol builds an
appeal to logos. One of the strongest rhetorical appeals Kozol uses in this particular excerpt is,
undoubtedly, the appeal to pathos. Throughout the entire piece, he spends lot of his time delivering
lengthy descriptions. They begin when he reports

marriage and money were what measured power, so since Lily had neither of those, her position

Firstly, the disadvantage of advertising online is that on the second the company advertised on the
internet, everyone around the world can see the advertisement. People will start to learn the
marketing materials that the company used no matter it is legal or illegal. Everything of the
company included the logos, pictures and brand will be shown on the internet for everyone to check
out. Other people can simply imitate and ruin the whole company easily.
Another disadvantage of advertising online is the web started to contain a lot of rubbish
advertisements. This leads the web users sick of those advertisements and started to ignore the
advertisements online (Ingram 2015).
Kathy(2013) states that the next point is the disadvantage of TV advertising. The major concern of
the TV advertising is the expensive TV ads. The company has to pay more when the air time is
longer. The price will also depend on the time of advertising on the TV, for example, in the morning,

Performance Enhancing Drugs in the Workplace
Performance enhancers are becoming more common in our everyday life, despite our efforts to

Essay on Opposites Attract in Antony and Cleopatra
Opposites Attract in Antony and Cleopatra
William Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a play that is centred around a pair of historical
lovers from two distinct cultures, Mark Antony from Rome and Queen Cleopatra from Egypt. The
Roman and Egyptian cultures have vastly different norms and social ideas that are almost complete
polar opposites in nature. These conflicting views are instrumental in the way that Cleopatra and
Antony act. These two characters are so great in their respective societies that they serve as models
to look to, although Antony may not be everybody s perfect vision of what a Roman should be. It is
also important to look at not only what these two characters think of their cultures, but what cultural

In addition to this way of designating the two title characters, Anne Barton has compiled a list of
expressions used to describe Cleopatra and Antony. She first discusses references to Antony:
In the course of the tragedy, Antony is called the noble Antony, the courteous Antony, the firm
Roman, Mars, a mine of bounty, the triple pillar of the world, the demi atlas of this earth, the
lord of lords, of infinite virtue, the crown o the earth, and the garland of the war. These are only
a few of the celebratory epithets. He is also poor Antony, a libertine, the abstract of all faults that
all men follow, a gorgon, a sworder, an old ruffian, a doting mallard, the ne er lust wearied Antony,
and a strumpet s fool. (47) All of the honorific titles given to Antony suggest to the audience that he
is indeed more than a mortal man. Even in the titles given to Antony that are less than respectful, he
is still seen as something other than an average human being. Being called a gorgon , for example,
would not make Antony seem like a hero, but he would still be seen as something more than
human. Many times a description of Antony will include the word the , implying that he alone is
this great, and has no counterpart.
Cleopatra is also more than a simple mortal human in the role of the Queen of Egypt, as she is
constantly referred to as the personification of Egypt. She even refers to herself in the same way.

Purification Of Alleles Lab Report
Introduction
In recent decades the advancements achieved in bioengineering have helped us develop a better
understanding of the origins from which humans and other living creatures spur. The discovery of
the Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the key to all bioengineering. The DNA is a nucleic acid that
contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living
organisms and some viruses. The main role of DNA molecules is the long term storage of
information. An allele is one of two or more forms of the DNA sequence of a particular gene. Each
gene can have different alleles. Sometimes different alleles can result in different traits.
Occasionally different DNA sequences of alleles will have the same ... Show more content on

Using the definition, is the English population closer genetically to the Bantus or the Koreans?
Explain.
First we find the angle between the Bantus and the English population by plugging in the values of
their components and magnitudes into the dot product equation for finding an angle between two
vectors. Then we solve for Оё. The angle is:
Оё= cos^( 1)вЃЎ((b вѓ‘в€™c в

Babysitter At Rest Psychology
The term male gaze coined by Laura Mulvey in her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,
draws attention to the role of females in films where women are objectified for the male spectator.
Objectification Theory by Barbara Fredrickson and Tomi Ann Roberts agree that sexual gazing is
what enables sexual objectification. Jean George The Babysitter at Rest, explores the consequences
one might encounter as a result of the male gaze. Through her relentless encounter with her lover
and boss, Tyler Burnett. However, Chris Kraus flips the narrative in I Love Dick as she returns
the gaze by becoming a stalker to a complete stranger. Kraus s technique fleshes out the fragility of
the male ego when the gaze is on them, which is used as a source of empowerment.

The Right To Jerusalem Essay
The Rights to Jerusalem
The rights to Jerusalem have been heavily debated for centuries. It is the cause of much animosity
between the three major monotheistic religions. Since the beginning, the Christians, Muslims and
Jews have all claimed that Jerusalem belongs to them due to their religious texts. According to the
Bible, Jerusalem is where Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross and crucified for his crimes,
blasphemy against Judaism and for treason against Rome. Jerusalem and the area surrounding it are
heavily embedded in Christianity and Judaism. Jerusalem is sacred to the Jews because the First
Temple, at the site known as the Temple Mount today, was built by King Solomon, and Mount
Moriah is where Abraham almost sacrificed his son and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the New Testament books of Luke and Acts, the accounts of the life of Jesus Christ are told
from his youth and adolescence to his adulthood and death. Jesus was brought to Jerusalem, in
his youth and adolescence, to be presented to God in the Temple, and to partake with his family
in the Festival of the Passover. In his adulthood, he traveled to Jerusalem to preach to the poor,
heal the sick and protect the people within the walls that surrounded Jerusalem. It is also the
location of Jesus Last Supper, his arrest in Gethsemane, his trial, his crucifixion at Golgotha, his
burial, his resurrection and ascension to heaven. With the significance of Jerusalem being very
high in the eyes of the Christian faith, there was very little doubt that there would be a battle to
maintain or regain control of Jerusalem. Nine of the main conflicts, to preserve Jerusalem for the
Christian faith, are known throughout history as the Crusades. During each crusade the theme
was the same; recover the lands that were taken by people who were believed to be the enemies
of God. The Crusades were fought to restore all holy lands and the lands that were once controlled
by Christians back to their rightful owners .
In the years just prior to the first crusade, a large amount of land was taken by the Saracens
(Muslims) from the Christian people living in the

The Navy Is A First Time Experience
oining the Navy is a first time experience for many. Not coming from a military background made
the transition even harder because my parents, and I, were not sure what I would be walking in to.
The lack of information being given to new members of the military has to change. It is the job of
the recruiter to provide them with the proper knowledge they need before even signing the military
contract. Also, it is the responsibility of the recruit to ask as many questions as they can, and if
needed, conduct further research on his/her own.
As a child, my mother would always ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I knew I
wanted to work in the medical field like her, but when I first entered college, that quickly changed.
Raised in a sheltered environment, I wasn t given the opportunities to hang out with friends or
attend high school functions like the others. I suddenly realized that college was not meant for me
at that exact time and decided I decided to do something different with my life. I sat down with a
Navy recruiter to see what career options the military could offer me. The medical field was still
my main focus, and I was eager to learn about naval medicine. The recruiter informed me that if I
join the Navy as an Undesignated Seaman, I would get the opportunity to choose any job title that
my heart desired. I immediately became full of excitement, ready for whatever was in store for me.
However, while in basic training I learned that being an Undesignated Seaman

Strictly Ballroom Analysis Essay
Baz Lurhmann, a former opera director started his film making career with Strictly Ballroom.
The success of this film, described by Baz Lurhmann himself as a sugary chunk of feel good
fudge , and the little film that could , provided a springboard to bigger things for this director who
wanted to shower audiences with style and spectacle. Nothing is too loud, grand or colourful; no
literary source too precious or revered for Lurhmann whose trademarks are exaggeration, bright,
loud and exuberance.
The first in Luhrmann s red curtain trilogy, Strictly Ballroom became the seventh most successful
film of all time at the Australian box office and a cult hit in America. He took on Shakespeare in
his second film, Romeo Juliet and followed that up by adapting one of America s most acclaimed
novels, The Great Gatsby, and turned it into a glitter dowsed party, embracing the champagne
infused emptiness author F. Scott Fitzgerald so famously denounced.

In Strictly Ballroom, the opening is comedic and colorful. Establishing this mood suggests to his
audience the film is a comedy and will end happily. In Romeo Juliet, the opening montage is
epic, jarring, enthralling, ominous, and spectacular. Luhrmann uses a lot of rapid cuts, vibrant
color, and operatic music to create intensity and set an uneasy tone. This opening prepares the
audience for the film and its sad conclusion. And in Great Gatsby, in using a number from 1923
by Irving Berlin, he sets the time period with a slow romantic feel soft dissolves showing framed
images of Daisy and we are aware of a love that is lost. The first party scene he once again
employs fast disjointed edits, a brashness that is at odds with the love story and again, he lets us

The Transition Of African American Literature
All throughout history you have many African American authors or writers who chose to write
stories about their lives. These stories are written in many different ways, and they gave us a true
insight on what was going during certain time periods. Also on how they lived or was treated
during their lifetime. This transition of literature, or writings ranged from those who grew up on a
plantation having to live out their whole lives as a slaves to those who were free, but they lived
under the constriction of Jim Crow laws. Another transition that can be seen through writing is how
African Americans went from living under Jim Crow to where we are today; having it where
African Americans are free with equal rights. With the help of African Americans

The Plague Of The 19th Century
The plague that struck Europe and Asia in the 14th century was undoubtedly the most
devastating disease or natural disaster the world ever faced. The Bubonic Plague or Black
Death killed an estimated 25 million people from 1347 to 1352 in Europe, which accounted for
one third of Europe s population.?? 1 Historians believed that the Plague started in Asia and then
spread to Europe. The plague lasted for five devastating years, but it s wrath did not end in 1352.
The Plague would reappear through the later centuries, including the Great Plague of London
around 1656 in which 20% of London residents died.?? 2 Although some of the later breakouts of
the Plague decimated populations, this paper will primarily focus on the Plague from the 1300s.
More specifically, this paper will address the origins of the Plague, its biology, the symptoms of the
Plague, where it was most devastating, how it was transmitted, and how it stopped. During this
period of time, many myths about the plague arose, and who or what was to blame for it. There
were also many unanswered questions, why some regions were susceptible and others were not.
Scientific information about the plague did not exist at the time, but some recent excavations and
research have brought new insight into the plague. The plague that crippled Europe in the 14th
century was not the first time the plague surfaced. A huge plague epidemic appeared in the 6th
century in Egypt and it struck Constantinople and then moved west

Benefits Of Low Disclosure Of The Hedge Fund Industry
There is a certain air of secrecy surrounding the hedge fund industry that makes investing in these
vehicles a scary endeavor for some. As hedge funds are not regulated to the same extent as mutual
funds, many firms choose to limit the disclosure of their operations and holdings. Because of this
lack of transparency combined with media criticism, many myths and fallacies regarding the
industry have surfaced. Although this lack of transparency may leave investors less informed and
more susceptible to risk when investing in a hedge fund, it also allows for higher returns that cannot
be achieved by more traditional investment vehicles. The benefits of low disclosure may outweigh
the costs for certain investors, but the level of transparency... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In a diversified portfolio, in which risk is managed well, any losses that are incurred by certain
assets will be offset in part by the gains of other assets. When risk is managed appropriately, hedge
funds can be a robust addition to a portfolio. Hedge fund managers insist on confidentiality in order
to allow for such high returns that their funds deliver, however, some investors are skeptical that
they seek confidentiality of their holdings in order to hide past losers of their portfolio. Through a
close examination of confidential 13F filings, the returns and liquidity of confidential holdings can
expose the justification for withholding proprietary information from the public. The evidence
found that confidential holdings actually outperformed holdings that were disclosed to the public,
and that many of these confidential holdings are illiquid assets that have performed well in the past.
This evidence suggests that managers sought confidentiality in order to generate superior returns,
rather than hide poorly performing positions (Aragon, Hertzel, and Zhen). This protection of
proprietary information prevents competition from freeriding off of the fund s investment strategies
as well as protects illiquid positions from front runners attempting to trade against the fund. While

Absence Of His Father In Booker T Washington
The name Booker T. Washington is often closely associated with prestige and great success as a
leader. However, before he was the man we know of today he came from a life of struggle and
constant strife. Before he became an image of freedom and intelligence he had to endure not only
conflicts externally for the color of his skin, but internally as well as he struggled to live his life
accordingly without the proper guidance of a father. The autobiography Up from Slaverygives us a
new perspective as the narrative tells the story of his life from slavery to becoming one of the
founders of TuskegeeInstitute. Yet, a man with his reputation it would be virtually impossible to
reach his stature without having some sort of guidance from mentors. Of course, throughout the
narrative Washington acknowledges many people in his life who he considered to be a father
figure , but due to the fact he was the son of a slave cook and a white man he never knew, there
was never a true biological father son relationship in his life. This begs the question if the lack and
absence of his own father shaped his own self perception, his relationship with others, as well as his
leadership style? By analyzing excerpts and quotes within the literature piece one could conclude
that the absence of his father is something Booker T. Washingtonhas come to terms with thus not
placing heavy burden on his life style and choices.
For example, a specific quote in the text shows how Washington does not put

Harsh and abrupt syntax shoots literary bullets at Hester Prynne s character and rips holes into it
that has not been seen before and Nathaniel Hawthorne in Lawrence s assessment of the Scarlet
Letter. Bullets get his point across accurately and properly. The sentences are written in a bullet
point format which launches his opinions with rigor. Lawrence s pinpointed syntax with line by
line criticism leaves no room for the reader to ponder what he is saying. This makes the writer and
the audience connect and believe what that Hester is longer a victim but, the antagonist. What
Lawrence is saying through his exact and precise structure comes through seamlessly to the
audience without a doubt. Consequently, he uses short and to the point sentences like A.The
Scarlet Letter. Adulteress! The great Alpha. Alpha! Alpha! Adulteress! to get his points across and
tear apart Hester Prynne (Lawrence). Lawrence wants his audience to see that Hester herself is the
Scarlet Letter and the Scarlet Letter is also Hester. The abrupt, harsh, and disruptive syntax is used
to persuade the audience into seeing the truth behind the curtain that is Hester Prynne while, she is
being ripped from limb to limb with the bullets Lawrence is throwing . He does his best to make
his sentences spew at the reader in an organized pattern that allows his thoughts to be conveyed
exactly the way he wants.

  • 2. Professional Objectives Program Discuss your professional objectives both short and long term. What has motivated you to apply to this program? My organization Penske Truck Leasing has been experiencing a sharp decline in the revenue generated from its full service leasing. Results of initial sales analysis concluded that the inflow of the new customers for full service leasing has been growing steadily; thus to increase revenue, the focus needs to be on the renewals for the existing customers. The company realizes that a lack of validated customer loyalty drivers prevents effective focus on customer retention and thus directly affects profitability. Challenges with data availability and business metrics have made attempts to measure and diagnose our service delivery and customer experience, both, difficult and inconclusive. In order to address this challenge, the organization has launched an initiative to build a customer analytics system that can achieve a single view of customer experience and make decisions about how best to acquire and retain customers, recognize high value customers and proactively interact with them. I have been identified as the lead architect for the BI and analytics team that is going to implement this project. I am also privileged to be associated with an initiative that is directed towards human resource analytics that analyzes the performance and profitability that the work force brings to the organization. The aim of this project is to align core workforce business ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Description Erysipelas, also referred to as St. Anthony s fire, is a rapid bacterial skin infection involves the dermis and hypodermis of the skin that result with severe pain and systemic symptoms (Kilbum, Featherstone, Higgins Brindle, 2010). Erysipelas commonly occurred in the legs, 90% of the cases, then involves in the face which have a characteristic butterfly distribution on both cheeks and nose follows by arms and thighs (Bonnetblanc Bedane, 2003; Linder, Johansson, Thulin, Hertzen, Morgelin, Christensson, ...Akesson, 2010; Davis, Cole Benbenisty, 2012). • 5. The Salmonella Case Study Step 1: Identify Preliminary Issues The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the multistate outbreak of human salmonella linked with live and frozen feeder rodents. Salmonella is a human and animal pathogen that has many different serotypes, but one of the most common serotypes is Salmonella Typhimurium, which this specific case focuses on. Salmonella can easily spread to people that are in contact with infected animals, including reptiles, amphibians, rodents, birds, livestock, as well as dogs and cats (PHAC, 2014). Moreover, animals carry this bacteria even when they are normal and healthy. Nevertheless, pet foods can be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria, and can infect the pet as well (PHAC, 2014). In this case, pets that have consumed the infected rodents, also carry the bacteria which transmits the pathogen to humans. According to the study, the key causes of this infection are due to the fact that that rodents sold as food are associated with the pet reptiles and amphibians through direct or indirect contact (CDC, 2014). This particular outbreak surfaced in 2009 in the United Kingdom and in 2010 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Salmonella pathogen in mice and rats are most likely subclinical which means that clinical signs include diarrhea, weight loss, hunched posture, ruffled coat, and conjunctivitis. And for rodents that have been dead which are served as frozen feeder rodents, labrotsists can perform a necropsy and check their spleens, livers, or intestines to check for the pathogen (Criver, 2009). Also, a specific seline broth can be used to test for salmonella in the culture (Criver, 2009). Incoming rodents should always be quarantined to routinely test for salmonella and since treatments for salmonella infected animals are rare, their environments should be sterilized properly (Criver, ... • 6. My Identity Crisis My identity crisis started when I was about 9 years old. The realization that I was different from friends, family, and my classmates were scary and hard to bare. As a young child, we are taught and framed to be a certain way, think a certain way, and live a certain way according to the family structure. Like most young girls I often fantasized about my wedding. What type of dress I was going to wear, what colors I would pick and what type of dress my wife would choose. My fantasies were often disrupted by the sound of my mothers voice instructing me to complete a task, or letting me know she was home. At that very moment internal shame, and denial would set in. This is not normal, a wife, why was I thinking about a wife? I don t like girls! I like Josh. That s who I will marry, Josh. This type of self doubt and shame I would live with for years. What was wrong with me, who am I, and why was my desires so different from my friends? Growing up I kept pushing these feelings aside to follow the social norm. Often, I had thought about telling my best friend, but the fear of being rejected or outed were way too much for a 14 year old to deal with. I would go along with my friends, laugh about how cute the new boy was, put posters on my walls of the most popular teen idols, and drool over the cute guy in the mall. Eventually I would detach myself from a lot of my girlfriends and form friendships with guys. Guys were much easier for me to relate to. I didn t have to talk about ... • 9. The Flaws In Early American History Textbooks To begin, a major flaw in the way American history courses are taught is due to the fact that textbooks do not allow students to form their own opinions, for everything is presented as fact . This is exemplified through the way early American life is taught. For example, a controversial topic is the specific destination of the Mayflower during the Pilgrim s journey to America. Some historians believe their arrival in Massachusetts was on purpose to be far from Anglican control in Virginia, while others believe violent storms lead them off track, or there were just navigation errors. The flaw then arises for all textbooks only pick one, and present it as fact to their readers for they believe it is the students only way to learn about the past (81). However, a student needs... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... American history textbooks always favor Plymouth Rock as the United States birthplace, for earlier settlements like Jamestown lacked moral and even participated in the first use of chemical warfare against a tribe, after forcing them to teach the colonists how to farm and taking them as prisoners (84). However, textbooks overlook this for the more favorable Pilgrims in order to prevent students from feeling bad about their early ancestors. However, this mindset strips students abilities to apply their knowledge and come to conclusions on what went right and what went wrong with the settlements in order to reach an educated perspective on their past. Textbooks believe it necessary to present everything as fact in order for children to learn and be right , when in reality it hinders students ability to think for themselves and use the evidence they do have to reason and come to their own conclusions, which is necessary to promote a deeper level of understanding of America s past and ... To use internet in her beauticians, I would recommend Sharon would be best to look at some sort of USB dongle. However I would recommend she downloaded all of her music at home so as she didn t eat into her data allowance. As for e mail Sharon could create two separate e mail accounts with windows hotmail as she could personalise her e mail addresses to her liking. Conclusion The laptop I am going to recommend is the ACER Aspire S3 391 Ultrabook.Overall it is the best laptop for Sharon s business and personal needs. It provides her with the software she needs to create her own advertisements, invoices, letters and to keep track of her accounts for her business. It also provides her with the ability to surf the internet and go shopping online as well as download music and due to the Acer having a DVD re writer allow her to create her own CDs through windows media player. The Acer also is the lightest laptop in this comparison and therefore will be easy for Sharon to transport between her beauticians and home.

Sanskriti Merchant SYBA 345,141259 A.ENG. 4.01 19th January 2016 Role of relationships and literary devices in Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil Some might argue that this literary masterpiece is a book about wasted lives, but it isn t. It s a book about selling one s soul and taking a great amount of satisfaction from it. This unapologetic portrayal of a life devoted to drugs is Thayil s debut novel from the perspective of an outsider slowly gaining the status of someone who belongs. It might be considered to be close to his own biopic, a fact that Thayil does not try to conceal. It is an enchanting tale of Mumbai s hazy world of opium addiction in the 1970s when the underbelly of Bombay was disjointed from the glitz and glamour of the new found city. The book... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thayil confesses that he believes that the only way to write about opium is through long, open ended sentences. The city, as given by the title, is the central character of the novel. Thayil named his book Narcopolis because Bombay seemed to me a city of intoxication, where the substances on offer were drugs and alcohol, of course, but also god, glamour, power, money and sex . The other characters swarm in and out of the city, all a mere blip in the working of the mechanism that is this metropolis. However, the author does not underrate the importance of their lives. On the contrary, the novel portrays their lives as if they were indispensable to the decade. As if their very existence made the sullen streets of Bombay what they are today. As if every street has a Dimple, a Rumi, and a Lee. Kevin Rushby s statement I wished that this book, like some long and delicious opium induced daydream, would go on and on. gives one a precise ... • 14. R s Four Freedoms F.D.R s Four Freedoms Speech Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as president of the United States of America from 1933 until 1945 and is most famously known for his handling of one of the most difficult periods in American history, a time plagued by economic depression and war. FDR, as he came to be known, started a New Deal which focused on relief, recovery, and reform. He gave hope to the American people, ensuring to them that, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. FDR changed the policy of isolationism, and turned the United States into a world power. He was a bold personality, and a strong leader, someone who led through his actions, rather than his words. Roosevelt suffered from polio, but never let the disease change him. His determination to help the American people ultimately allowed him to become known as one of America s greatest presidents. FDR gave many famous and opinionated speeches in order to encourage American involvement in domestic and foreign conflicts, and used these speeches as a form of propaganda. Franklin Delano Roosevelt s 1941 State of the Union Address, which came to be known as his Four Freedoms speech, spoke to a worried America on the verge of America s entrance into the Second World War. His speech characterized American identity, created a sense of nationalism, and spelled out four essential freedoms that people worldwide should possess. • 15. Distracted Driving and Cell Phones Today, one of the major sources of automobile accidents is distracted driving due to cell phone use. Driver distraction can be defined as the diversion of attention away from activities critical for the safe driving toward a competing activity (Young 3). The dangers of driving while using a cell phone cannot be overstated, but drivers still use their cell phones even though they are illegal. According to a survey, About 2 out of 10 (18%) report that they have sent text messages or emails while driving; about half (49%) of those 21 to 24 year olds report doing so (NHTSA). This indicates that millions of people use their cell phones while driving everyday, and with the increased availability and affordability of cell phones, the risk can only increase. In this paper the topics that will be discussed in regard to cell phone use while driving include the brief history of the cell phone, talking while driving, texting while driving, the part of the community most affected by using cell phones, alternatives to reduce incidents, the laws that have been enacted, and the organizations that endorse no texting while driving. In a time when rapid access to information is valuable, cell phones have bridged the gap between the information and the user. The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin is such a moving story with so many incorporated themes that leave an impacting message in the reader s life. I really enjoyed the writing style of Tom Godwin. He starts with a phrase that gets the reader s attention immediately and gets us wondering why him not being alone is such a big deal. After this he gives us the answer and some background information about the frontier and jumps right into the story again. There s a lot of intensity to start with, but when we are introduced to Marilyn the author gives us some relief and the way he does this is by using literary language such as similes and metaphors and sarcasm. I love this contrast because it doesn t stay at one level if not it changes in a way that is entertaining for the reader and it allows us to want to read more. Not only this, but Tom Godwin uses a lot of situational and dramatic ironyto add to the intensity and story. Another reason this story stands out is because of all the themethat is incorporated and not only the fact that there are many things but the technique used to incorporate the theme. For instance, the concepts of children impersonating adults, the author as a god, the corruption inside marriage and war, and misinterpretation of adult ideas, are scrutinised by McEwan. McEwan dissects how people undertake roles unsuitable for their position in society through the employment of literary techniques. After Lola s first encounter with her rapist Marshall, she is described as wearing a blue satin sheath dress , something much more mature than the expected garb of an adolescent. This dress is juxtaposed against Lola s childish features, such as her loose hair and bare [feet] , generating pathos for Lola, as she attempts to comprehend her traumatic encounter through sartorial precocity. In the same scene, 13 year old Briony labels the twins little kids , consolidating Lola s troubling position of maturity. In addition, McEwan utilises imagery to portray Briony s attempt to act as both an adult and God after interrupting Cecilia and Robbie s lovemaking. In order to simultaneously cast herself as the hero and Robbie as the villain, Briony describes Robbie as huge and wild , as if he were a beast who had trapped Cecilia. The capacity that makes each of us capable of warm, satisfying relationships also leaves us vulnerable to sadness, despair, and grief when such relationships are disrupted (Carr, 1969). Regardless of the actual relationship that might have existed prior to the death, we have the tendency to idealize the relationship once death has occurred and we expect expressions of normal grief. When examining whether anticipatory grief hinders conventional grief, Clayton, Halikas, Maurice, and Robbins (1973) found more depressive symptoms in the first month of bereavement in women who had experienced anticipatory grief. This would coincide with the theory of learned helplessness. If we cannot control our environment (death of a loved one) then we are at the mercy of the environment. For this reason there is no contingency between our response and the consequences. This leads to associative, motivational, and emotional deficits. The individual has no motive for anything, is under extreme stress, and becomes depressed, all leading to learned helplessness. In The Homeless and Their Children , author Jonathon Kozol explains how poverty and homelessness can go hand in hand, but he also shows his readers that the government in New York City during the 1980 s did not really attempt to assist those in need. The author shows us how the homeless and illiterate struggled by sharing with us an interview with a young woman called Laura who resided in a massive welfare hotel. Kozol did not find it necessary to write this piece in a persuasive tone, or a compassionate tone, or even an angry tone to get his message across. He did not need to include a multitude of statistics to convince his readers that homelessness , illiteracy, and governmental apathy were issues. As stated in the introductory... By providing Laura s report of her exact figures of her income and expenditures, he caters again to the reader s logical reasoning skills by giving us a more precise and mathematical understanding of her plight. Also, Kozol writes about the process of churning: Those on welfare , the Community Service Society of New York said in a report published in 1984, may be suddenly removed from welfare rolls for reasons unrelated to their actual need, or even to eligibility standards (Kozol 306). By giving us a direct quote and a documented source, the readers can assume that this statement is true and we can make a better, more informed opinion on this topic. Lastly, he uses a metaphor to describe the appearance of Laura s children: In the room are two boys with dark and hollowed eyes and an infant girl. A third boy is outside and joins us later. The children have the washed out look of the children Walker Evans photographed for Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (Kozol 306). The Roman and Egyptian cultures have vastly different norms and social ideas that are almost complete polar opposites in nature. These conflicting views are instrumental in the way that Cleopatra and Antony act. These are only a few of the celebratory epithets. He is also poor Antony, a libertine, the abstract of all faults that all men follow, a gorgon, a sworder, an old ruffian, a doting mallard, the ne er lust wearied Antony, and a strumpet s fool. Even in the titles given to Antony that are less than respectful, he is still seen as something other than an average human being. Being called a gorgon , for example, would not make Antony seem like a hero, but he would still be seen as something more than human. Many times a description of Antony will include the word the , implying that he alone is this great, and has no counterpart. Explain. First we find the angle between the Bantus and the English population by plugging in the values of their components and magnitudes into the dot product equation for finding an angle between two vectors. Then we solve for Оё. The angle is: Оё= cos^( 1)вЃЎ((b вѓ‘в€™c в ѓ‘)/‖b вѓ‘ ‖‖c вѓ‘ ‖ )=cos^( 1)вЃЎ((в€ љ(.1) в€ љ(.21)+в€ љ(.09) в€ љ(.07)+в€ љ(.12) в€ љ(.06)+в€ љ(.69) в€ љ(.66))/(1в€™1))≈10.272В° We use the same process to determine the angle between the Korean and the English population.
