Analysing Film Poster
Task 1
Analysing a Poster
• There are some key elements you need to identify when
analysing a film poster.
• Title
• Star – name of star and position
• Billing Block – names of credit key cast and crew.
• Image Background
• Focal Image
• Release Date
• Distributor
NOTE
I would look at analysing a film
(rather than a different media
product) poster as it will be
easier to create your own in
school.
Example
o Title
o Star
o Billing Block
o Image Background
o Focal Image
o Release Date
o Tagline
o Distributor
Where are these elements on
this poster?
Film Poster Analysis
• You will need to select a film poster and annotate it using
the criteria below:
o Title
o Star
o Billing Block
o Image Background
o Focal Image
o Tagline
o Release Date
o Distributor
When analysing these headers
consider the use of font styles and
colours being used
Task 2
Analysing the meaning
• You are now going to expand the analysis of the poster
looking at:
• Title – what font, position, colours are used?
• Images – Mise-en-scene the setting, costume, lighting used
within the images and what that might be conveying to the
audience?
• Tagline – what does it convey about the story?
• Star Appeal – How are famous actors names used?
• Colour – the primary use of colour within the image and how
images are used within this?
• Iconography – are there images or elements that make it easy
to identify the genre of the film?
Example
Lets analyse the poster:
• Title
• Images
• Star Appeal
• Colour
• Iconography
Planning a film poster
• You will be creating a film poster. You will need to
consider the following and detail these elements in the
plan:
• What images will you take and of who?
• Where will these images be positioned?
• Will you do anything to these images: colour tinting,
lighting effects or other digital effects.
• What font will you use the title and star text?
• The use of colour in the poster.
Reminder this must be a poster for the film you are creating a trailer
for.
Discussion
• Consider the way these posters have used the
discussed critieria.
Photo Shoot
• You will need to include images in your poster and be
expected to complete a photo shoot in the studio.
• You will need a background image.
• A focal image
• At least three other images these could be people key
objects etc.
