American Sniper Themes
American Sniper tells the story of Chris Kyle, a U.S. Navy SEAL, who becomes one of the deadliest
snipers in American history. In his four tours of duty, his goal is to save the lives of his comrades, but
this makes him the most wanted man by insurgents in Iraq. Chris has to sacrifice his relationship with
his family at home in order to complete his duty, and when he finally returns home, he still cannot get
over the war. Clint Eastwood succeeded in his choice of cast. Bradley Cooper was a perfect actor for
this role because he accurately portrayed Chris Kyle s experiences and struggles. Cooper displayed the
actions of a veteran upon returning home from war, and this could not have been done in a more
realistic way. Sienna Miller played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These items are detailed through Kyle s deployments. Eastwood successfully created images of what
the battlefield in Iraq looks like. In addition, he used symbols such as the American flag and the Navy
SEAL trident to express Kyle s pride for America. The themes of this film connect Kyle s struggles
with his family, deployment, and remembrance of war. Overall, the story line successfully depicts
Chris Kyle s life. The film begins with Kyle s childhood and training to become a Navy SEAL. The
rest of the film goes through Kyle s deployments in Iraq and his struggles with being a husband and
father at home. Having the film from the perspective of Chris Kyle makes the plot more effective than
if it were from another character s perspective. The character of Taya Kyle seemed to have a negative
aspect because she was against her husband going to war and she was overall a very one dimensional
character. The production of American Sniper by Clint Eastwood was very well done. The use of
montages to show Kyle s memories is successful in reinforcing his inner struggles. The continual use
of diegetic sound made the film even more real and put the viewer in a position as if they were
experiencing the war with the characters. When Kyle is killed by a Marine whom he was trying to
help, the film transitions to actual videos from his funeral procession in Texas, which makes the film

Nuclear Arms Race in South Asia and Its Impact on Regional...
NUCLEAR ARMS RACE IN SOUTH ASIAAND ITS
IMPACT ON REGIONAL SECURITY
INTRODUCTION
1. The nuclear age opened during World War II with a blinding light; a deafening roars fire and blood.
The world s first nuclear bomb exploded at Alamogordo on 16 July 1945. It had a very complex
history. The sensational discovery of nuclear fission first came in Germany in December 1938. British
research then showed that the manufacture of a nuclear weapon was almost possible. The American
technological, scientific and industrial effort in the Manhattan Project , that actually built the bomb. At
last initial test was carried out in the wastes of New Mexico desert. The American first used nuclear
bomb against Japan in August 1945 in World War II.

Consequently the concern about India surfaces more strongly in the minds of the NNWS than any
other state. Besides, India is so close to each one of them in terms of shared history, inheritance and
culture that one cannot help but recognize her overwhelming influence. For them, to divorce the past,
which all these countries shared with India, is to cut themselves off from their roots.
6. None of the NNWS of South Asia matches the Indian power capabilities with respect to any of the
attributes of power. The power difference is so enormous that no NNWS can either singly or
collectively encounter the Indian pressure and threat. Therefore, both militarily and economically the
states are extremely vulnerable vis à vis India. All these issues bear out the fact that India, a single
overwhelming factor, and looms very large in the minds of the small states of South Asia when
matters not only of external relations but also of domestic importance are considered.
7. Pakistan is also an important actor in the region and appears big in the mind of NNWS too. But they
do not so far perceive it as a threat. Nevertheless, when India and to some extent Pakistan acquire
huge armed forces, with the latest combat aircraft, tanks, guns, a vast industrial establishment, a
nuclear capability and even a nuclear power submarine then the smaller countries of south Asia cannot

The Contagion Of Contagion And Vaccines
Contagion/Vaccines If I was to quarantine an individual in a Utilitarian system, I would have them
placed into a room by themselves in a hospital. They would be provided with any sort of necessities.
Family members would be allowed to come into their room to visit, as long as they were fully
protected. The main concern would be to keep them away from other people so they do not spread the
deadly disease, but still keep them content. This keeps the disease contained to the one person rather
than spreading even further, benefiting the greater number. They may not leave the room until they
have been treated or cleared by a doctor. If for some reason they did escape, threatening many others
to become ill, they would have to pay a very large fine. If there was a nation needing to be quarantined
under a Utilitarian system, I would let no individual cross state borders. The border of each state
would have military men lining it. If they were to go against this and somehow sneak out of their state,
they would face jail time in their near future. In the movie, Contagion, they did not let anyone leave
the state, which caused riots and panic in the citizen s living there. To stop this from happening, I
would have selective individuals from each town that had been cleared by a doctor, go out and work
the stores, clean up the streets and try to keep the town as put together as possible. This would help
make the situation more comforting than nerve wracking. If I was to quarantine

New Media And The Information Age
In the society that we live in today, information is easily accessible and technological advancements
are rapidly increasing. The term often referred to during this period in time is information age.
According to Merriam webster, the term s meaning is defined as the modern age regarded as a time in
which information has become a commodity that is quickly and widely disseminated and easily
available especially through the use of computer technology. Whether it is in your daily life, social life
and/or professional life one thing is for certain new media is consistently being produced, published,
distributed and consumed. Robert Logan writes in his book Understanding New Media, new media is
very easily processed, stored, transformed, retrieved, hyper linked and perhaps most radical of all,
easily searched for and accessed. New media can often be associated with digital technology and other
digital devices. As stated above, the easy of access to information is making new media concepts more
popular compared to tradition media forms and advertisements. Older styles of marketing methods
such as yellow pages, penny saver, television advertisements, local radio, etc. have shown a serious
decline over the years due to the introduction of mobile devices and personal computers. With the
emergence of new media, entertainment and consumerism is changing the way that information is
being processed. Various media channels are constantly being introduced however select few have

The Motivations Of Higher Education Students Essay
This research aimed to understand the motivations of higher education students for

The Role Of Police Women In Law Enforcement
The role of police women has come a long way since they were finally acknowledged into the field of
law enforcement. Nevertheless law enforcement still struggles to hire and retain female officers for a
number of reasons. There have been many guidelines put in place, but female officer s still face
discrimination that discourage them away or hinder their promotion opportunities. Police departments
are under major pressure from the public to hire more female officers. The literature review shows a
female officers struggle in gaining success in a male dominated career. Law enforcement has been
considered as a man s job and now that women have proven they are capable of the job, police men
are not as accepting. Research shows that police men s views on women in the police force are
resilient to the fact that women are able to perform all tasks of the job. This paper will discuss what
obstacles women have faced in the police role and also provide recommendations to help hire and
retain these female officers.
Literature Review
Sir Robert Peel is known for his achievement in passing the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829, which
led to the establishment of the first modern police force. He believed it should be defined as a full time
and uniformed officer with a main purpose of patrolling the city. He would only select officers that fit
a certain mold, which meant they had to be trained and disciplined. During the creation of this police
force, women were not permitted to take part. In the mid 1800 s is when women were first actively
employed into the police force. But even then they were given administrative duties or assigned to
specialized bureaus, mostly working with juveniles and children. During the great depression there
were huge changes on how employment was viewed, because of this women s employment suffered.
A married woman with a job was seen as dishonorably taking away employment from a man trying to
financially care for his family. (Milton, 1972) By tradition, women were viewed as the caretaker of
children and the role of taking care of the house while the man is to be the main source of income.
Entrance exams for the police role often required extensive physical agility tests, some of which have

The First Grade Classroom, Nothing Is Not Of The Ordinary
Diagnosed Personality Looking upon the second grade classroom, nothing is not of the ordinary. The
teacher is guiding a lesson, the students are generously giving their attention, and for the most part,
seem to retain the information well. However, there is a latent pressure held within the mind of one
little boy. You can hear the repeated tap, tap, tapping of his pencil lead quickly meeting the surface of
his spiral notebook. He s meticulously spelling out T R I S T A N will billions of tiny dots. Tristan
Bernhard finds this as a temporary remedy to soothe his unquenchable urge to play pretend basketball
through the large aisles of desks in the room. He knows his peers wouldn t understand his day dream

These were factors that made Tristan unique, creative, and fascinating. Tristan s parents wanted to
avoid having this label placed on any document in fear that it would impact his future likelihood of
joining the military or being accepted in an occupation. Therefore, they declined the option to receive
medication and instead wanted to address the ADHD as a part of Tristan s personality. The couple felt
it was important to begin teaching Tristan how to fit into the world that didn t accept his nature. They
began to teach him acceptable and unacceptable behaviors in the classroom. He was told that it was all
right to be uninterested in the teacher s content, but he could not run around the room because that
would be considered a distraction to the other students. In this sense, Tristan did not interpret ADHD
as disability, but rather a natural trait he had. In order to fit his teachers behavioral expectations, he
designed his own coping strategies. This included tap drawings, breaking pencils under his desk, or
daydreaming. He found that methods such as these either kept his mind occupied or took him out of
the dull world he was living in and placed him in his ideal. Although this prevented him from straying
from the school s guidelines, Tristan expressed that he had difficulty learning and absorbing
instruction in classes. Despite this hardship, he felt this was the best alternative so that his peers could

Cynthia Robbins-Roth and the Biotechnology Industry
Cynthia Robbins Roth is a strategic planner and business consultant to the biotechnology industry,
named one of the Top 25 Biotech All Stars by popular business magazine Forbes. Her book, published
in year 2000, provides a broad overview of many biotech topics and draws upon her experience and
skill as a keen businesswoman. The engaging and informative work initially details the establishment
and growth of the biotechnology industry, as well as its historical origins and information on key
players in its founding. Throughout her account of this dynamic industry s early struggles, great
successes, and current difficulties, Robbins Roth presents her opinion of the industry s current
viability and hopes of the future product pipeline. Robbins Roth predicts a revolutionary change in
health management and treatment, which combined with the growing aged population, will produce
sufficient demand to propel the biotechnology industry past the well established small molecule
pharmaceutical companies. She asserts that the biotechnology companies will emerge as the leaders in
the world s medical research and development. Robbins Roth further explains the intricacies of
financing a biotechnology venture, the necessity of efficient risk management, and the difficulty of
selling an idea to non scientist investors. The author recalls that in the nascent biotechnology industry,
companies were trying to be all things to all markets, developing products for nickel mining, oil

Manners and Etiquette of Pride and Prejudice

Late European History

Do s and Don ts of Pride and Prejudice
In 19th century England, manners played a big role. In her book Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
portrays many different aspects of English social manners in the 1800s, and these facets of English
etiquette, including traveling etiquette, social propriety, and dancing, greatly affect the plot of the
book.
One aspect of English social etiquette was the set of strict rules for how one was to act to appear as a
socially adept person and therefore a desirable match for marriage. They were for the most part
unspoken rules, but during the 19th century there began to be a growing selection of etiquette books

He dances every dance, is very courteous, and pays special attention to Jane (Austen 278 279).
Because of these two characters different behavior at this first ball, they establish their reputations;
Darcy gets a bad reputation as a proud and disagreeable man, and Mr. Bingley gets a reputation as an
amiable man who is fun to be around.
Mr. Bingley through dancing also got an opportunity to show Jane that he cared about her; in the
1800s, if a gentleman asked to dance with a lady twice it usually meant that said gentleman was
interested in the lady. At the first ball, Mr. Bingley danced with [Jane] twice... (Austen 279) and
thereby showed his affection for her, an affection that grows stronger throughout Pride and Prejudice.
Dancing also affects the plot of Pride and Prejudice. During the ball at Netherfield, Darcy dances with
Elizabeth, and two important things happen during this dance. First, Darcy s affection for Elizabeth
begins to flourish. As he is dancing with her, they have a little argument. After the dance, Darcy
begins to be angry at Elizabeth, but ...in Darcy s breast there was a tolerable powerful feeling towards
[Elizabeth], which soon procured her pardon, and directed all his anger against another. Also, during
this dance Elizabeth s view of what happened between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham, that Mr. Darcy
has shamelessly exploited Mr. Wickham, is established in her own mind. Without dancing, the plot of

Professional Writing Practitioners in Australia
Solely based on the exceeding statistics it would appear that professional and creative writing fails to
provide a guarantee of employment once a degree has been obtained. Research conducted by Graduate
Careers Australia (2014), emphasises these figures by illustrating where graduates progress to within
specialist employment four months after completion of their degree. The results demonstrated 60.6%
of graduates from a language and literature based degree maintained full time employment after
graduation (Graduate Careers Australia, 2014, 02). This was almost a 5% decline from graduates who
had obtained full time employment in 2012 (GCA, 2013, 02). From the remainder of graduates, 24.7%
had obtained part time or casual work and 14.7% were still seeking employment (GCA, 2014, 02).
From the graduates who obtained degrees in the language and literature sector, 41.1% enrolled in
further full time study after graduation (GCA, 2013, 01). These statistics are focalised on specialist
careers within the industry. However, creative and professional writers in the 21st century are
obtaining more work through freelancing, while maintaining a part time job through embedded
employment. Embedded employees are viewed as outside of the language and literature discipline and
freelancers are recognised as unemployed, therefore displaying the statistics as underreported. Modern
practioners who are self employed, freelance writers depend on a portfolio career (Inkson 2008, 549)

The enduring nature and extensive range of the debate about dividend policy has spawned a vast
amount of literature that grows by the day. For this reason, a full review of all debates is not feasible1.
However, this paper endeavours to give justice to the importance of both the topic of dividend policy
as an area of financial economic research, and also to the literature that has been produced addressing
that topic, by reviewing the most important and influential studies in this area. It attempts to outline
the main theories and explanations of dividend policies and to review the main empirical studies on
corporate dividend policy. The remaining of this paper is organized as follows. Section 2 gives a short
background of corporate dividend policy. Section 3 analyses the theories of dividend policy starting
with the dividend irrelevance hypothesis of Miller and Modigliani, and then the alternative hypotheses
including bird inthe hand, tax preference, clientele effects, signalling, and agency costs hypotheses.
Section 4 summarises the paper.
2. Background of Corporate Dividend Policy2
The issue of corporate dividends has a long history and, as Frankfurter and Wood (1997) observed, is
bound up with the development of the corporate form itself. Corporate dividends date back at least to
the early sixteenth century in Holland and Great Britain when the captains of sixteenth century sailing
ships started selling financial claims to investors, which

The Isometric Phases Of The Isometric Phase Of Muscle...
The isometric phase of muscle contraction occurs when the length of the muscle body is constant, with
no visible shortening, as the tension increases (Kroeker, 2017). Isometric tension is the first phase of
the SEC model of contraction, in which the cross bridges formed by actin and myosin filaments
shorten, but add tension only to SEC (Kroeker, 2017). The isotonic phase of muscle contraction occurs
when the tension remains constant, but the muscle body begins to shorten (Kroeker, 2017). In regard
to SEC, the isotonic shortening phase occurs when the actin/myosin cross bridges cause visible
shortening after tension when PEC=SEC=Load, as for the muscle to visibly shorten as a unit the
tension in SEC must be equal to the load (Kroeker, 2017). The muscle must shorten as an outcome of
the elastic elements already being stretched (Kroeker, 2017). The latent period represents the force
generated by the sarcomeres of each filament that is transmitted through the connective tissues and
tendons prior to movement, but will cause movement (Kroeker, 2017). Therefore, the latent period is
the time between the stimulus and contraction, as it occurs during the isometric tension phase during
the time between stimulus application and isotonic shortening (Kroeker, 2017). When a load is higher,
the latent period will be longer as more tension is needed for the muscle to generate a force large
enough to move the weight (Kroeker, 2017). A longer latent period allows for muscle tension to

The First Chapter Of Anselm s Argument
The first chapter of Anselm s Monologian focuses on Anselm s argument that there is something that
is the best, the greatest, the highest, of all existing things. It is through this unknown something that all
things possess their goodness. According to the argument he puts forth, the goodness of things in this
world must be caused and must therefore stem from one thing that is good, or from many. If goods can
be comparable as goods, it follows that there must be some general and unified way of regarding their
goodness, or the source of their goodness. However, if many causes have their goodness in common, it
is through this goodness that they cause good things. Ergo, there must be a common source. In either
case, whether the cause is one or many, a single, unitary source of goodness is indicated. Anselm
argues that this source of all goodness is not good because of something else, but is itself goodness.
The proofs for Anselm s argument are as follows: Whenever various things are said to be good in
greater, lesser, or equal degree, either a) different good s are good through different things, or b) there
is some one thing through which they are all good. Anselm s argument supports option b. He purports
that there are infinite goods, which can be experienced by the senses and identified through reason.
Hence, there is some one thing through which all goods are good, and that through which all goods are
good is a great good. Furthermore, that through which all

The Double Self Portrait By Frida Kahlo
On first impression, The Two Fridas(1939) by Frida Kahlo, is an image that appears grim and sad,
with a gloomy atmosphere, set by the background, and a gruesome imagery seen through the open,
bloody hearts. The double self portrait is an oil and canvas image of a European and Mexican Frida.
The European Frida s dress is covered in blood from a cut heart vein, and both the women s hearts are
exposed, with European Frida s appearing broken. The two figures are sat in the foreground of the
image, with a woven bench beneath them and a stormy, grey sky as the background. The image doesn

There is a repetition of shape throughout the white lace located on the European Frida s dress, and
more natural flower shaped images repeated along the hem of her dress. The cloud shaped objects in
the sky create an atmosphere of stormy times and gloomy days.
There is a strong contrast in colour between the two Frida s. The one on the right has bright colours
blue and yellow, complimentary colours, adorning her traditional clothing, where else the European
Frida appears dressed in a more monochromatic outfit with sprinkles of contrasting colour, through
the red of her blood and other earth tones of the flowers. Her representation of colours used, have a
variety of meanings, ranging from the blue meaning distance from her husband, but a continued
tenderness towards him, and the yellow showing signs of her madness sickness and fear. Most of
which hold a negative connotation which is emphasised throughout the piece. Though the piece holds
a sombre atmosphere to the piece, the artwork does not appear to have a very cold palette. There are a
few warm colours that contrast with the icy grey tones of the clouds. But otherwise the piece has a
warmer tint, emphasised especially through the warm tone of Kahlo s skin.
Tone is seen throughout the piece, especially in the face, through the created depth, in darkening
several areas for the purpose to make some aspects appear to be closer to the view than other. Like the

Reviews of the Television Version of the Sound of Music Essay
First things first the television show Sound Of Music that was broadcasted in December 5th 2013 and
was broadcasted on national televison channel called NBC the producers name was Craig Zadan and
Neil Meron , the special had a cool cast such as a Carrie Underwood who stared in this show as Maria
von Trapp. It was performed and televised live all over the country from a film studio in Bethpage ,
New York. The history of the show was very interesting so far and how they had famous actors such
as Carrie Underwood , although there was criticism directly to Carrie Underwood who was casting in
the show as Maria , many said that Carrie did not have much experience to play such a big role as
Maria. It was said before that critics described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Want to know a little bit more about the history well in The Sound Of Music Live was broadcasted
live from a stage in Bethpage , New York in about a budget of 9 million dollars which was not much
you may think but one of the producers named Zadan considered it to be one of the profoundly
complicated , amazing experiences we ve ever had Zadan said. If you didnt know before The Sound
Of Music Live was aired as part of a push by NBC to air more live entertainment specials. As it was
said before that the Sound Of Music was broadcasted among programs such as Sunday Night football ,
the show got in those rankings of views which is incredible ; the sound of music was watched by
18.62 million viewers and had a 4.6 rating in the 18 49 demographic it was one of the most viewed
shows that was programmed at night.
Another topic that would be interesting to discuss would be on the sponsorships that The Sound Of

In 1994 Mr. Latimer was found guilty of second degree murder of his daughter Tracy Latimer, a 12
year old girl who had a severe form of cerebral palsy. On a leave to appeal from the Superior Court of
Canada (SCC), Mr. Latimer s imposition of mandatory minimum sentence for second degree murder
constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in this case, so the accused should receive a constitutional
exemption from minimum sentences under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. During the
second trial, the defence counsel asked the trial judge for a ruling, in advance of his closing
submissions, on whether the jury could consider a defence of necessity. Whether the jury should have
been allowed to consider a defence of necessity. The trial judge told counsel that he would rule on
necessity after the closing submissions, and later ruled that the defence was not available. Whether the
timing of trial judge s ruling as to the availability of the defence rendered accused s trial unfair.
THE ISSUES:

the day, Mr. Latimer made a personal choice to end the life of another human being, who s disability

Components in the Formation of Different Medicines Essay...
Chemistry has affected people for years. It will always be a major component in how life progresses.
We use chemistry every day when we cook. We use it every day when simply brushing our teeth.
Toothpaste contains Fluorine. It is a very intense aggressive and reactive element. It is the substance in
toothpaste that whitens our teeth. As you can see there are many things that chemistry contributes to.
Chemistry is a big component of the formation of different medicines. Without chemistry medicines I
have had to take would not even exist. I recently had to take medicine called Ativan or also known as
Lorazepam. Lorazepam is a medicine that comes from a group called benzodiazepines. It is a
medicine for anxiety. It was made from Wyeth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I just wanted to stop and relax but I felt like I could not. Anxiety is a strong emotion that takes over
many people when they become overwhelmed with tasks or issues in their lives. Without chemistry I
would have not been able to have the medicine that I needed.
There are many other ways to cope with anxiety than medicine. However some people don t have the
time so medicine can be a really amazing thing. Some people including my brothers went to
therapists. Some do yoga, breathing methods, and just talking to people. Anxiety can get out of hand
quickly. When It gets out of hand it can become a very dangerous cycle. Although Lorazepam can be
very helpful, it can also harm people. Just like every other medicine it has many possible side effects.
It can cause depression, hypotension, shortness in breath, dizziness, and weakness. It can also cause
severe respiratory failure. If you take it when you are pregnant it can kill the baby and cause issues
when it comes to breast feeding. It has many issues however it is usually not fatal when people
overdose. Ativan can be a highly aggressive and addictive drug. It is recommended to only take only
for two to four weeks. The medicine stays in your system for eighteen to thirty six hours. Withdrawals
from the medicine can cause seizures, insomnia and more intense anxiety. It can be injected, ingested
in pill form, or worn in form of skin patches. The majority of people that get

Friendship In John Knowles s A Separate Peace
In life, a person is never able to stay in contact with every person they have met. An acquaintance is
no exception to this idea; friends will come and go, and this is inevitable. Sometimes a companion will
move away, never to be seen again, cut themselves off, never to be heard from again, or pass away,
never to do anything again. One bad occurrence can make or break a relationship. It all depends on
whether the resolution of it will cement a life long friendship or a lifelong schism. Any relationship
can be complicated, to the point of making no sense at all. This is similar to what John Knowles writes
about on his novel, A Separate Peace. Knowles writes of one of his main characters, Gene Forrester,
experiencing some of the themes above. Gene causes his friend Finny s leg to be broken, and Knowles
uses the resulting events to convey the idea that a friendship does not always have to make sense for it
to exist. In nearly every major interaction involving Gene, he consistently exhibits behavior which
would certainly sabotage his relationship with Finny and other peers. He harbors harsh and strong
emotions, which eventually do make themselves clear to the person they belong to. For example, Gene
begins a conspiracy against Finny, thinking, Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies (53).
Even after Finny eventually resolves the complications between himself and Gene, he still falls victim
to Gene s latent emotions a short moment after the reconciliation. In a

Similarities Between Jazz And Rock N Roll
The future of jazz lies in the music s spontaneity and liveliness. Aspects of the music, that have been
there since its conception, such as improvisation, make it forever subject to change, which is what the
music needs. The jazz music that is being created today is far from what the public expects to hear in
music. It will not be popular, but it stands a very good chance of being excellent music. Change in jazz
is inevitable because, like language, communities change, provide new contexts that require new
expressions, or find new ways of doing things (Nicholson 71). There will always be people who
appreciate jazz s complexity more than the music being played on the radio or the artists selling the
most records. Jazz is dead only in regards to its mainstream popularity, but the music itself is very
much alive. People are incorporating aspects of jazz style into their own works every day by taking it
in new and original directions. Change occurs when someone wants the language or music to do

Other music genres, such as rock n roll, country, and hip hop have attempted to do the same by taking
current issues and addressing them through lyrics or sounds. In particular, jazz and rock n roll share
many similarities. Both relied heavily upon saxophones as lead instruments and both rose from the
outskirts of society to become an integral part of the American musical canon (Fitzgerald 1). Charlie
Watts of the Rolling Stones is one of the most respected musicians in the world for bringing the
sensibilities of a jazz drummer to rock music (www.therollingstones.com). Watts is just one example
of a rock n roll legend whose love and appreciation for music is rooted in/ started with jazz, listening
when he was around ten years old to artists like Miles Davis and John Coltrane

The Democracy Of The United States Government
Randy Rivas
Political Science 1
O Regan
Fall 2015
Voter Turnout In a democracy citizens are permitted to have a significant amount of influence on
government through the election of government officials. This is known as Direct Democracy, which
means that the citizens play a significant role on the laws and policies of the land. Although the liberty
of voting is available, why is the voter turnout so low? Many other countries have a much larger vote
turnout than the United States. The reason for this varies; some major points would be the
Demographics, voting laws, and political favoritism/corruption that affect the voter turnout. When the
people vote for a public figure they expect them to succumb to the will of the people, and not big ...

Those who campaign have a hard time reaching out to the young community. Most college students do
not own a television set, therefore are not well aware of current political affairs. In part many young
Americans feel that their vote does not matter, or that whatever they must vote for doesn t interest or
affect them in any way. Older age groups that vote tend to be more educated on politics, because they
tend to be much better educated. Ones views on politics can vary depending on the type of
environment you grew up in. The agents of socialization in one s life play a big role on determining
how one feels towards politics. Parental views on politics influence their children s future views on
politics greatly. Ethnicity and socio economic status have a huge impact on the voter turnout. Political
knowledge and perception is no different than the area you live in or the quality of food you eat, it s all
based on wealth and social status. Those who make enough money to barely survive tend to have little
to no knowledge on politics. These groups tend to be minority groups. The vast majority of groups
that tend to vote are strictly but not definitively well educated white families. Although this is not
always the case, certain ethnic groups and minority groups vote when they have interest in what they
are voting for. For example, in the 2012 election with Obama, for the first time ever the overall black
voter turnout exceeded that of the white voter turnout, the idea of

The Importance Of User Experience
User experience was something I knew of before but never fully understood. Since it s such a large
field where things are constantly changing and evolving, it can be difficult to keep up with the current
events as a new explorer. Fortunately, there are many resources out there that help people do just that.
Between the three sites I explored in greater depth, uxdesign.cc had the most content centred interface
and I found myself getting distracted reading up about other topics that had caught my attention.
However, the graphics were uncomfortably large on my laptop and led me to wonder if it was instead
a mobile site, which I confirmed by accessing it on my phone. From there, I found an article
discussing the impact of copy on the user and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This method has been dubbed confirm shaming , when the text in the options displayed guilt trip the
user into choosing what the developer wants them to choose, leveraging guilt rather than empathy and
working in opposition to user centred design. I have personally experienced such scripts and declined
the offers out of spite because I felt irritated, leaving me with a negative impression of the site. Based
on these interactions, I have developed strong feelings against copy like that, and I was pleased to find
that this article said as much for users response to it. Such arrogance in design can be detrimental to
the user experience. Jason Fox (2017) describes narcissism in writing as times when preference is
given to a strategy, technique, or style that aligns with personal preference rather than what actually
works with a given audience (para. 9). When the designer is manipulating the user, it becomes
designer centred design, which is useless in all senses because digital designers are designing for users
and their needs, not themselves. However, there is a positive side to copy with attitude. Innovating on
states of error where a query returns no data helps create a memorable and lasting first impression of a
user s experience with a site (Fox, 2017,

Introduction. Anyone Who Has Ever Made And Broken A New
Introduction
Anyone who has ever made and broken a New Year s Resolution can appreciate the difficulty of
behavior change. Making a lasting change in behavior is rarely a simple process, and usually involves
a substantial commitment of time, effort, and emotion. Every year, much of the energy the U.S.
consumes is wasted costing businesses money and leading to increased carbon pollution. Energy
efficiency is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to combat climate change, clean the air
we breathe and improve the competitiveness while reducing the operational costs to businesses.
Specifically, one organization can reduce costs by up to ten thousand dollars annually by becoming
energy efficient. Yet, convincing corporate culture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it is a clear advantage, achieving energy efficiency for budgetary reason will not engage
employees to participate. To educate employees on the need to conserve energy throughout the office,
it is vital to engage them as partners. The energy used to power the offices result in half of our nation s
greenhouse gas emissions. We have the largest opportunity to save energy, money, and protect the
environment by increasing energy efficiency within the office space. Ultimately, becoming energy
efficient results in saving the American businesses more than $500 billion a year in avoided energy
costs (Unkown, 2012), avoiding other cost cutting measures.
Information and advice are not enough, behavioral changes must happen though contextual factors
such as habits and routines. The theories of change support interventions by describing how behaviors
develop and change over time. Operant conditioning based on a reward system or positive
reinforcement is easily implemental within a corporate environment. For example, all employees who
enable hibernation mode on their office desktops during off peak hours, reducing energy consumption
of ten percent while idle, will be permitted to leave ten minutes prior to their normal shift end. This
not only rewards the employee with an addition hour weekly of paid time off but save on energy
consumption during that time as well. In addition to a reward based

How Voter s Remember a Candidate s Name
Candidates for the House of Representatives, both incumbents and challengers, work hard to raise
public awareness of their intentions of running for Congress. Trying to inform voters of themselves is
important for candidates to potentially increase their opportunity of election. However, incumbent
candidates may differ from challengers based on the level of knowledge voters have on each. Such as,
if voters are capable of recalling the name of the House candidate, whether it be the incumbent or the
challenger, can demonstrate the voter s knowledge. Furthermore, voter s capability to recall a name
may be affected by how much they care about who wins the election for the House from their
congressional district. To determine the relationship between the ability to recall the names and how
much the voters cared about election result, data from a survey research was drawn to make a
comparison between the candidates. Separately comparing the ability to recall the name of the
incumbent and the challenger with how much the respondents cared about the election results. After
testing the suppositions, each chi square test illustrated an asymptotic significance number of less than
.05 (Burns, et al. 2003). This means that the independent and dependent variables have a significant
relationship instead of being a spurious association. The tested data illustrates that from the people
who cared about the election results very much, 26 percent were able to recall the incumbent s name

The Trading Dynamics of Institutional Investors
The fraction of corporate equity owned by institutional investors has grown considerably in the past
several decades; institutional holding of shares in U.S. equities has increased from approximately 16%
in 1965 to over 50% in 2010 (Federal Reserve Board, 2011). The fact that institutional investors are
managing such a sizable wealth invested in U.S. equity market has potential important role in term of
setting market prices. The growing impact of institutional investors on capital markets has induced to
increased research on the behavior of this group of investors both by academics and policy makers,
who tend to believe that institutional investor follow momentum based strategies, and often are
alleged to herdinglike behavior and following destabilizing trading strategies.
Recent studies investigating the behavior of institutional investors document three main results. First,
institutional investors are momentum traders (buying past winners and selling past losers) and are
more likely to follow past prices (citet*{grinblatt1995momentum}). Second, Institutional investors
sometimes trade in the same direction over a period of time or engage in herding behavior
(citet{wermers1999mutual}). Finally, the contemporaneous association between changes in quarterly
institutional holding and quarterly stock returns is much stronger than the feedback trading effect
(citet{nofsinger1999herding,wermers1999mutual}).

A Re look at the America Funeral Process
Funerals are some of the most difficult activities for most individuals to experience, especially when
they involve the death of a loved one. Over the years, there has grown a common and yet distinct
American custom when it comes to how funerals are perceived and conducted (James 348). However,
most Americans still hold unto the traditional funerals as opposed to modern ones. Unfortunately, the
American funeral customs put a lot of more emphasis on some activities that turn out to be very costly.
Worst of all, the economic burden that this traditions put on the bereaved families is even more
detrimental.

Identified by the majority as funeral directors in America, these specialists have transformed the
twentieth century experience of death and body disposal. On the flip side though, this does not mean
that they have made things any easier.
Since the funeral expense plans have become a part of the American funeral custom, here is a look at
how this plans may not be a good investment after all. First of all, such plans usually accord the client
negligible interest of their money, and in some cases the interest goes into their pockets therefore
meaning that they do not over individual the control of the money they have invested in them (Nash).
Secondly, the funeral plans will always cost more than they claim that it will cost for them to offer
their services fully during the death of an individual. In that regard, I would like to point out that this
is my utmost to both funeral homes and American funerals since the two are intertwined. According to
Nash , most commercial on American televisions currently advertise the services of funeral plans,
saying that it costs just around $6,000 for and individual to get a full cover. However, this is a huge
lie. This could have been true a few decades ago, not today.
When factoring in additional expenses that funeral plans do not often disclose, the total figure of an
entire funeral process ends up doubling. Nash

Documented Congitive Biases
For one there is a serious problem with the general reliability of the method, and of course the raters
are under the influence of the several different, well documented cognitive biases (Murphy, 2008).
Oddly this subjective method is often used even in situations where there are more objective
criterions, like sales or turnover, available (Vinchur et al., 1998). Its weaknesses aside, supervisory
ratings of individuals can indeed be meaningful under certain conditions, and there are situations
where no other measures are available. Researchers has suggested that the method can be improved by
using a carefully conducted job analysis as a foundation for the construction of the rating scales, and
training for the observers conducting the ratings (Borman Smith, 2012).
Objective measures, such as turnover, sales, absences or production rates are often considered as
better measures of job performance. Sadly these criterions also have their weaknesses, at least to some
extent. A recurrent problem with these measures is that of criterion contamination. Simply put, even if
the criterion in question is of central importance to the employer such as sales, there can be several
different reasons for the individuals specific value in the criterion, for example leadership and
environmental issues which effects the compared employees differently. There are possible efforts to
be made trying to limit these factors influence s on the results, with varying efficiency (Hammer

How Mark A Book By Mortimer J. Adler
How to Mark a Book by Mortimer J. Adler. How to Mark a Book by Mortimer J. Adler is an essay
over the author s belief on the importance of marking or writing inside a book. Adler s primary
purpose is persuasive. He writes to convince the reader to partake in writing in one s own books when
reading to become more efficient. Adler s secondary purpose is expressive because of the way he
describes his least favorite type of reader: There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the
standard sets and best sellers unread, untouched. This deluded individual owns woodpulp and ink, not
books (17 6). Adler uses a couple of patterns during his essay. The first pattern is description. He
explains that the true value of a book is in its ideas: The soul of a book can be separated from its body.
A book is more like the score of a piece of music than it is like a painting (17 8). Adler then uses a
comparison/contrast pattern to enlighten the reader about the three kinds of book owners. His least
favorite type of reader was mention earlier in the analysis. The second type of book owner has many
books but they have no written notes or markings by the owner. This owner is, compared to the next
type in Alder s eyes, still not a true book owner. The third and most desired type of book owner,
according to Alder, has: ... a few books or many every one of them dog eared and dilapidated, shaken
and loosened by continual use, marked and scribbled in from front to back.

The Mother Of Law Asks The Daughter
In part 6, the mother in law asks, has Nature shown/ her household books to you, daughter in law,/ that
her sons never saw? (Rich 67 69). The tone is argumentative and almost confrontational, but as we
look deeper, the older woman seems also to encourage the younger woman to pursue the idea of
creating her own life outside of her marriage. She seems to be saying, it may be too late for me to
create my own identity separate from my husband, but not yet for you. The mother in law asks the
daughter in law if there is a side to her that her husband has not seen, hinting to the idea that the
daughter in law should keep her own identity rather than exposing every part of herself to her
husband. Rich is addressing the fact that women were not expected to achieve anything besides
marrying and having a family, the typical 1950 s stereotype that many women abided by. But in this
stanza, the Mother In Law is almost hinting that the Daughter In Law still has time to break away
from this stereotype and create her own life and her own identity apart from her husband, an idea that
would have been highly rejected during the post war, baby boom era. Towards the end of the poem,
Rich writes the two lines, only 7 words that truly represent her tone and point in Snapshots of a
Daughter In Law : Sigh no more, ladies./Time is male (Rich 93 94). Rich is accepting one of the most
obvious aspects of the 1950 s when she writes time is male, meaning that time, as such a vast and
consuming

  • 2. American Sniper Themes American Sniper tells the story of Chris Kyle, a U.S. Navy SEAL, who becomes one of the deadliest snipers in American history. In his four tours of duty, his goal is to save the lives of his comrades, but this makes him the most wanted man by insurgents in Iraq. Chris has to sacrifice his relationship with his family at home in order to complete his duty, and when he finally returns home, he still cannot get over the war. Clint Eastwood succeeded in his choice of cast. Bradley Cooper was a perfect actor for this role because he accurately portrayed Chris Kyle s experiences and struggles. Cooper displayed the actions of a veteran upon returning home from war, and this could not have been done in a more realistic way. Sienna Miller played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These items are detailed through Kyle s deployments. Eastwood successfully created images of what the battlefield in Iraq looks like. In addition, he used symbols such as the American flag and the Navy SEAL trident to express Kyle s pride for America. The themes of this film connect Kyle s struggles with his family, deployment, and remembrance of war. Overall, the story line successfully depicts Chris Kyle s life. The film begins with Kyle s childhood and training to become a Navy SEAL. The rest of the film goes through Kyle s deployments in Iraq and his struggles with being a husband and father at home. Having the film from the perspective of Chris Kyle makes the plot more effective than if it were from another character s perspective. The character of Taya Kyle seemed to have a negative aspect because she was against her husband going to war and she was overall a very one dimensional character. The production of American Sniper by Clint Eastwood was very well done. The use of montages to show Kyle s memories is successful in reinforcing his inner struggles. The continual use of diegetic sound made the film even more real and put the viewer in a position as if they were experiencing the war with the characters. When Kyle is killed by a Marine whom he was trying to help, the film transitions to actual videos from his funeral procession in Texas, which makes the film ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Nuclear Arms Race in South Asia and Its Impact on Regional... NUCLEAR ARMS RACE IN SOUTH ASIAAND ITS IMPACT ON REGIONAL SECURITY INTRODUCTION 1. The nuclear age opened during World War II with a blinding light; a deafening roars fire and blood. The world s first nuclear bomb exploded at Alamogordo on 16 July 1945. It had a very complex history. The sensational discovery of nuclear fission first came in Germany in December 1938. British research then showed that the manufacture of a nuclear weapon was almost possible. The American technological, scientific and industrial effort in the Manhattan Project , that actually built the bomb. At last initial test was carried out in the wastes of New Mexico desert. The American first used nuclear bomb against Japan in August 1945 in World War II. 2. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consequently the concern about India surfaces more strongly in the minds of the NNWS than any other state. Besides, India is so close to each one of them in terms of shared history, inheritance and culture that one cannot help but recognize her overwhelming influence. For them, to divorce the past, which all these countries shared with India, is to cut themselves off from their roots. 6. None of the NNWS of South Asia matches the Indian power capabilities with respect to any of the attributes of power. The power difference is so enormous that no NNWS can either singly or collectively encounter the Indian pressure and threat. Therefore, both militarily and economically the states are extremely vulnerable vis à vis India. All these issues bear out the fact that India, a single overwhelming factor, and looms very large in the minds of the small states of South Asia when matters not only of external relations but also of domestic importance are considered. 7. Pakistan is also an important actor in the region and appears big in the mind of NNWS too. But they do not so far perceive it as a threat. Nevertheless, when India and to some extent Pakistan acquire huge armed forces, with the latest combat aircraft, tanks, guns, a vast industrial establishment, a nuclear capability and even a nuclear power submarine then the smaller countries of south Asia cannot but watch with a high degree of ... • 4. The Contagion Of Contagion And Vaccines Contagion/Vaccines If I was to quarantine an individual in a Utilitarian system, I would have them placed into a room by themselves in a hospital. They would be provided with any sort of necessities. Family members would be allowed to come into their room to visit, as long as they were fully protected. The main concern would be to keep them away from other people so they do not spread the deadly disease, but still keep them content. This keeps the disease contained to the one person rather than spreading even further, benefiting the greater number. They may not leave the room until they have been treated or cleared by a doctor. If for some reason they did escape, threatening many others to become ill, they would have to pay a very large fine. If there was a nation needing to be quarantined under a Utilitarian system, I would let no individual cross state borders. The border of each state would have military men lining it. If they were to go against this and somehow sneak out of their state, they would face jail time in their near future. In the movie, Contagion, they did not let anyone leave the state, which caused riots and panic in the citizen s living there. To stop this from happening, I would have selective individuals from each town that had been cleared by a doctor, go out and work the stores, clean up the streets and try to keep the town as put together as possible. This would help make the situation more comforting than nerve wracking. If I was to quarantine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. New Media And The Information Age In the society that we live in today, information is easily accessible and technological advancements are rapidly increasing. The term often referred to during this period in time is information age. According to Merriam webster, the term s meaning is defined as the modern age regarded as a time in which information has become a commodity that is quickly and widely disseminated and easily available especially through the use of computer technology. Whether it is in your daily life, social life and/or professional life one thing is for certain new media is consistently being produced, published, distributed and consumed. Robert Logan writes in his book Understanding New Media, new media is very easily processed, stored, transformed, retrieved, hyper linked and perhaps most radical of all, easily searched for and accessed. New media can often be associated with digital technology and other digital devices. As stated above, the easy of access to information is making new media concepts more popular compared to tradition media forms and advertisements. Older styles of marketing methods such as yellow pages, penny saver, television advertisements, local radio, etc. have shown a serious decline over the years due to the introduction of mobile devices and personal computers. With the emergence of new media, entertainment and consumerism is changing the way that information is being processed. Various media channels are constantly being introduced however select few have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Motivations Of Higher Education Students Essay This research aimed to understand the motivations of higher education students for 37 38 participating in health related product testing and clinical trials. Furthermore, this also strove 39 40 to discover just what type of products and marketing tools were more attractive to contacting 41 and attracting individuals to these tests. 42 43 44 45 A relevant study finding incorporates the fact that the motivational variable 46 Explanation/clear perception of what will be tested , presenting the highest average value 47 48 (4.397), proves the main motivation for student participation in clinical trials and health 49 50 related product testing and included in the Effort factor. When it comes to health related 51 product testing and clinical trials, individuals may experience many fears and doubts and 52 53 when not obtaining the necessary clarifications, may refuse to cooperate. This foreshadows 54 55 the importance of the role of marketing communications in the dissemination and promotion 56 of clinical trials to the extent that research project communication should certainly provide 57 58 important information to potential volunteers in order to nurture their interests in 59 1 2 3 participating. • 7. The Role Of Police Women In Law Enforcement The role of police women has come a long way since they were finally acknowledged into the field of law enforcement. Nevertheless law enforcement still struggles to hire and retain female officers for a number of reasons. There have been many guidelines put in place, but female officer s still face discrimination that discourage them away or hinder their promotion opportunities. Police departments are under major pressure from the public to hire more female officers. The literature review shows a female officers struggle in gaining success in a male dominated career. Law enforcement has been considered as a man s job and now that women have proven they are capable of the job, police men are not as accepting. Research shows that police men s views on women in the police force are resilient to the fact that women are able to perform all tasks of the job. This paper will discuss what obstacles women have faced in the police role and also provide recommendations to help hire and retain these female officers. Literature Review Sir Robert Peel is known for his achievement in passing the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829, which led to the establishment of the first modern police force. He believed it should be defined as a full time and uniformed officer with a main purpose of patrolling the city. He would only select officers that fit a certain mold, which meant they had to be trained and disciplined. During the creation of this police force, women were not permitted to take part. In the mid 1800 s is when women were first actively employed into the police force. But even then they were given administrative duties or assigned to specialized bureaus, mostly working with juveniles and children. During the great depression there were huge changes on how employment was viewed, because of this women s employment suffered. A married woman with a job was seen as dishonorably taking away employment from a man trying to financially care for his family. (Milton, 1972) By tradition, women were viewed as the caretaker of children and the role of taking care of the house while the man is to be the main source of income. Entrance exams for the police role often required extensive physical agility tests, some of which have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The First Grade Classroom, Nothing Is Not Of The Ordinary Diagnosed Personality Looking upon the second grade classroom, nothing is not of the ordinary. The teacher is guiding a lesson, the students are generously giving their attention, and for the most part, seem to retain the information well. However, there is a latent pressure held within the mind of one little boy. You can hear the repeated tap, tap, tapping of his pencil lead quickly meeting the surface of his spiral notebook. He s meticulously spelling out T R I S T A N will billions of tiny dots. Tristan Bernhard finds this as a temporary remedy to soothe his unquenchable urge to play pretend basketball through the large aisles of desks in the room. He knows his peers wouldn t understand his day dream on the court. Not to mention that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These were factors that made Tristan unique, creative, and fascinating. Tristan s parents wanted to avoid having this label placed on any document in fear that it would impact his future likelihood of joining the military or being accepted in an occupation. Therefore, they declined the option to receive medication and instead wanted to address the ADHD as a part of Tristan s personality. The couple felt it was important to begin teaching Tristan how to fit into the world that didn t accept his nature. They began to teach him acceptable and unacceptable behaviors in the classroom. He was told that it was all right to be uninterested in the teacher s content, but he could not run around the room because that would be considered a distraction to the other students. In this sense, Tristan did not interpret ADHD as disability, but rather a natural trait he had. In order to fit his teachers behavioral expectations, he designed his own coping strategies. This included tap drawings, breaking pencils under his desk, or daydreaming. He found that methods such as these either kept his mind occupied or took him out of the dull world he was living in and placed him in his ideal. Although this prevented him from straying from the school s guidelines, Tristan expressed that he had difficulty learning and absorbing instruction in classes. Despite this hardship, he felt this was the best alternative so that his peers could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Manners and Etiquette of Pride and Prejudice Rebekah Johnson Mrs. Tencza Late European History 21 November 2012 Do s and Don ts of Pride and Prejudice In 19th century England, manners played a big role. In her book Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen portrays many different aspects of English social manners in the 1800s, and these facets of English etiquette, including traveling etiquette, social propriety, and dancing, greatly affect the plot of the book. One aspect of English social etiquette was the set of strict rules for how one was to act to appear as a socially adept person and therefore a desirable match for marriage. They were for the most part unspoken rules, but during the 19th century there began to be a growing selection of etiquette books available, for instance, Dr. ... Because of these two characters different behavior at this first ball, they establish their reputations; Darcy gets a bad reputation as a proud and disagreeable man, and Mr. Bingley gets a reputation as an amiable man who is fun to be around. Mr. Bingley through dancing also got an opportunity to show Jane that he cared about her; in the 1800s, if a gentleman asked to dance with a lady twice it usually meant that said gentleman was interested in the lady. At the first ball, Mr. Bingley danced with [Jane] twice... (Austen 279) and thereby showed his affection for her, an affection that grows stronger throughout Pride and Prejudice. Dancing also affects the plot of Pride and Prejudice. During the ball at Netherfield, Darcy dances with Elizabeth, and two important things happen during this dance. First, Darcy s affection for Elizabeth begins to flourish. As he is dancing with her, they have a little argument. After the dance, Darcy begins to be angry at Elizabeth, but ...in Darcy s breast there was a tolerable powerful feeling towards [Elizabeth], which soon procured her pardon, and directed all his anger against another. Also, during this dance Elizabeth s view of what happened between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham, that Mr. Darcy has shamelessly exploited Mr. Wickham, is established in her own mind. • 12. Professional Writing Practitioners in Australia Solely based on the exceeding statistics it would appear that professional and creative writing fails to provide a guarantee of employment once a degree has been obtained. Research conducted by Graduate Careers Australia (2014), emphasises these figures by illustrating where graduates progress to within specialist employment four months after completion of their degree. The results demonstrated 60.6% of graduates from a language and literature based degree maintained full time employment after graduation (Graduate Careers Australia, 2014, 02). This was almost a 5% decline from graduates who had obtained full time employment in 2012 (GCA, 2013, 02). From the remainder of graduates, 24.7% had obtained part time or casual work and 14.7% were still seeking employment (GCA, 2014, 02). From the graduates who obtained degrees in the language and literature sector, 41.1% enrolled in further full time study after graduation (GCA, 2013, 01). These statistics are focalised on specialist careers within the industry. However, creative and professional writers in the 21st century are obtaining more work through freelancing, while maintaining a part time job through embedded employment. Embedded employees are viewed as outside of the language and literature discipline and freelancers are recognised as unemployed, therefore displaying the statistics as underreported. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The enduring nature and extensive range of the debate about dividend policy has spawned a vast amount of literature that grows by the day. For this reason, a full review of all debates is not feasible1. However, this paper endeavours to give justice to the importance of both the topic of dividend policy as an area of financial economic research, and also to the literature that has been produced addressing that topic, by reviewing the most important and influential studies in this area. It attempts to outline the main theories and explanations of dividend policies and to review the main empirical studies on corporate dividend policy. The remaining of this paper is organized as follows. Section 2 gives a short background of corporate dividend policy. Section 3 analyses the theories of dividend policy starting with the dividend irrelevance hypothesis of Miller and Modigliani, and then the alternative hypotheses including bird inthe hand, tax preference, clientele effects, signalling, and agency costs hypotheses. Section 4 summarises the paper. 2. Background of Corporate Dividend Policy2 The issue of corporate dividends has a long history and, as Frankfurter and Wood (1997) observed, is bound up with the development of the corporate form itself. • 14. The Isometric Phases Of The Isometric Phase Of Muscle... The isometric phase of muscle contraction occurs when the length of the muscle body is constant, with no visible shortening, as the tension increases (Kroeker, 2017). Isometric tension is the first phase of the SEC model of contraction, in which the cross bridges formed by actin and myosin filaments shorten, but add tension only to SEC (Kroeker, 2017). The isotonic phase of muscle contraction occurs when the tension remains constant, but the muscle body begins to shorten (Kroeker, 2017). In regard to SEC, the isotonic shortening phase occurs when the actin/myosin cross bridges cause visible shortening after tension when PEC=SEC=Load, as for the muscle to visibly shorten as a unit the tension in SEC must be equal to the load (Kroeker, 2017). The muscle must shorten as an outcome of the elastic elements already being stretched (Kroeker, 2017). The latent period represents the force generated by the sarcomeres of each filament that is transmitted through the connective tissues and tendons prior to movement, but will cause movement (Kroeker, 2017). Therefore, the latent period is the time between the stimulus and contraction, as it occurs during the isometric tension phase during the time between stimulus application and isotonic shortening (Kroeker, 2017). When a load is higher, the latent period will be longer as more tension is needed for the muscle to generate a force large enough to move the weight (Kroeker, 2017). A longer latent period allows for muscle tension to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The First Chapter Of Anselm s Argument The first chapter of Anselm s Monologian focuses on Anselm s argument that there is something that is the best, the greatest, the highest, of all existing things. It is through this unknown something that all things possess their goodness. According to the argument he puts forth, the goodness of things in this world must be caused and must therefore stem from one thing that is good, or from many. If goods can be comparable as goods, it follows that there must be some general and unified way of regarding their goodness, or the source of their goodness. However, if many causes have their goodness in common, it is through this goodness that they cause good things. Ergo, there must be a common source. In either case, whether the cause is one or many, a single, unitary source of goodness is indicated. Anselm argues that this source of all goodness is not good because of something else, but is itself goodness. The proofs for Anselm s argument are as follows: Whenever various things are said to be good in greater, lesser, or equal degree, either a) different good s are good through different things, or b) there is some one thing through which they are all good. Anselm s argument supports option b. He purports that there are infinite goods, which can be experienced by the senses and identified through reason. Hence, there is some one thing through which all goods are good, and that through which all goods are good is a great good. Furthermore, that through which all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Friendship In John Knowles s A Separate Peace In life, a person is never able to stay in contact with every person they have met. An acquaintance is no exception to this idea; friends will come and go, and this is inevitable. Sometimes a companion will move away, never to be seen again, cut themselves off, never to be heard from again, or pass away, never to do anything again. One bad occurrence can make or break a relationship. It all depends on whether the resolution of it will cement a life long friendship or a lifelong schism. Any relationship can be complicated, to the point of making no sense at all. This is similar to what John Knowles writes about on his novel, A Separate Peace. Knowles writes of one of his main characters, Gene Forrester, experiencing some of the themes above. Gene causes his friend Finny s leg to be broken, and Knowles uses the resulting events to convey the idea that a friendship does not always have to make sense for it to exist. In nearly every major interaction involving Gene, he consistently exhibits behavior which would certainly sabotage his relationship with Finny and other peers. He harbors harsh and strong emotions, which eventually do make themselves clear to the person they belong to. For example, Gene begins a conspiracy against Finny, thinking, Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies (53). Even after Finny eventually resolves the complications between himself and Gene, he still falls victim to Gene s latent emotions a short moment after the reconciliation. In a ... • 31. Documented Congitive Biases For one there is a serious problem with the general reliability of the method, and of course the raters are under the influence of the several different, well documented cognitive biases (Murphy, 2008). Oddly this subjective method is often used even in situations where there are more objective criterions, like sales or turnover, available (Vinchur et al., 1998). Its weaknesses aside, supervisory ratings of individuals can indeed be meaningful under certain conditions, and there are situations where no other measures are available. Researchers has suggested that the method can be improved by using a carefully conducted job analysis as a foundation for the construction of the rating scales, and training for the observers conducting the ratings (Borman Smith, 2012). Objective measures, such as turnover, sales, absences or production rates are often considered as better measures of job performance. Sadly these criterions also have their weaknesses, at least to some extent. A recurrent problem with these measures is that of criterion contamination. Simply put, even if the criterion in question is of central importance to the employer such as sales, there can be several different reasons for the individuals specific value in the criterion, for example leadership and environmental issues which effects the compared employees differently. There are possible efforts to be made trying to limit these factors influence s on the results, with varying efficiency (Hammer Landau, 1981; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. How Mark A Book By Mortimer J. Adler How to Mark a Book by Mortimer J. Adler. How to Mark a Book by Mortimer J. Adler is an essay over the author s belief on the importance of marking or writing inside a book. Adler s primary purpose is persuasive. He writes to convince the reader to partake in writing in one s own books when reading to become more efficient. Adler s secondary purpose is expressive because of the way he describes his least favorite type of reader: There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the standard sets and best sellers unread, untouched. This deluded individual owns woodpulp and ink, not books (17 6). Adler uses a couple of patterns during his essay. The first pattern is description. He explains that the true value of a book is in its ideas: The soul of a book can be separated from its body. A book is more like the score of a piece of music than it is like a painting (17 8). Adler then uses a comparison/contrast pattern to enlighten the reader about the three kinds of book owners. His least favorite type of reader was mention earlier in the analysis. The second type of book owner has many books but they have no written notes or markings by the owner. This owner is, compared to the next type in Alder s eyes, still not a true book owner. The third and most desired type of book owner, according to Alder, has: ... a few books or many every one of them dog eared and dilapidated, shaken and loosened by continual use, marked and scribbled in from front to back. ... • 33. The Mother Of Law Asks The Daughter In part 6, the mother in law asks, has Nature shown/ her household books to you, daughter in law,/ that her sons never saw? (Rich 67 69). The tone is argumentative and almost confrontational, but as we look deeper, the older woman seems also to encourage the younger woman to pursue the idea of creating her own life outside of her marriage. She seems to be saying, it may be too late for me to create my own identity separate from my husband, but not yet for you. The mother in law asks the daughter in law if there is a side to her that her husband has not seen, hinting to the idea that the daughter in law should keep her own identity rather than exposing every part of herself to her husband. Rich is addressing the fact that women were not expected to achieve anything besides marrying and having a family, the typical 1950 s stereotype that many women abided by. But in this stanza, the Mother In Law is almost hinting that the Daughter In Law still has time to break away from this stereotype and create her own life and her own identity apart from her husband, an idea that would have been highly rejected during the post war, baby boom era. Towards the end of the poem, Rich writes the two lines, only 7 words that truly represent her tone and point in Snapshots of a Daughter In Law : Sigh no more, ladies./Time is male (Rich 93 94). Rich is accepting one of the most obvious aspects of the 1950 s when she writes time is male, meaning that time, as such a vast and consuming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
