During Bowerman s tenure at the University of Oregon, he had coached a young middle distance
runner named Phil Knight. Knight wrote a research paper arguing that cheaper, high performance
Japanese shoes could overthrow German dominance of the U.S. athletic shoe industry. On a trip
to Japan, Knight contracted with the Onitsuka Tiger Company to sell its quality athletic shoes in
the U.S. He made up the name Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) in 1962 and formed a partnership with
Bowerman in 1964, each partner investing $500 in the business (Nike Timeline, 2006).
Bowerman designed most of the prototypes and made suggestions for improvement to the Tiger
Company, while Knight distributed the shoes from his father s basement and out of the back of
his car at track meets. In 1965, Jeff Johnson, Knight s former track competitor at Stanford
University, became the first full time employee of BRS. Under his guidance, BRS opened its first
retail outlet in Santa Monica, California, in 1966 (Nike Timeline, 2006). In the following year, the
company was incorporated. In 1971, Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student that Knight met at
Portland State University, designed the swoosh for $35. Later that year, Jeff Johnson devised the
name Nike, after the Greek goddess of triumph and victory.

Essay On The Secret Of Humanity
Humanity is a term that is used to describe essential characteristics of a human s nature. When
most people think of humanity, they would think of it as having the emotional right to feel for
others, compassion and morally good behaviors. While I do agree with this, in regard to this film, I
view humanity as the total opposite. With the world evolving and changing every day, the
definition of humanity has no exact answer. I would align the broad term of humanity with the
phrase survival of the fittest, meaning that a person would do anything it takes to survive in this
world. In the film The Secret of NIMH, it uses various animals to show many different perspectives
of humanity that people have on a humans nature. While characters such... Show more content on

This is very uncommon for a small animal such as herself to be doing alone, especially with a
huge cat by the name of Dragon lurking nearby. These actions alone demonstrate the depth of
risks that she would take in order to save her children and her home. By her going out of her way
to protect her loved ones, this shows the loving and determined characteristics she has as a mother
which could possibly be described as being humane.
Another character that many people may say have various aspects of humanity is Sullivan.
Personally, Sullivan is a very interesting character in my opinion. Sullivan is Jenner s gullible,
reluctant sidekick and temperamental pushover. Although he may seem very vulnerable, Jenner
has a significant identity of his own. For example in the scene where the rats of NIMH were in
the council chamber discussing their ideas about relocating to Thorn Valley, Sullivan was very
intense and passionate about his opinions and he was not afraid to robustly voice them at all. I
would also describe Sullivan s position in this movie as an anti villain due to his nervous and
hesitant reactions when he and Jenner concocts the plan to kill Nicodemus. Jenner takes full
advantage of Sullivan s weakness and manipulates him until Sullivan has change of mind during the
act of killing Nicodemus. Many people could argue that Sullivan s neutral position and his change
of heart in order to do the right thing justifies that he

Medtronic vs Stryker
Executive Summary
The New Year started off well in the US medical devices industry and shows no signs of slowing
down in 2008. The robust demand for medical equipment and the increasingly ageing population
helped the shares of several medical devices makers outperform the market in the second half of
2007. We maintain the belief that, as a whole, the medical deviceindustry is highly profitable with
high barriers to entry. In addition, during periods of economic uncertainty, medical equipmenthas
seen continued gains.
We are evaluating two companies within the Medical Equipment Industry: Stryker Corp.
(NYSE:SYK) and Medtronic Inc. (NYSE:MDT). Our main goal is to analyze which company
might make a better investment.

Most leading US medical devices manufacturers sought to introduce new products, secure market
share and drive long term growth to remain competitive. Despite economic jitters in the US, the
industry remained healthy and showed little sign of slowing down significantly in 2008. It serves
more than 300 million people and should continue to be profitable. As patients continue to make
their quality of life an important healthcare priority and are willing to invest in treatments, medical
devices manufacturers and providers should experience growth. Medical device companies
continued to devote time and money to determine national regulatory requirements, conduct
additional overseas clinical trials and equip themselves new medical technologies. The demand for
medical devices was driven by growing expenditure on healthcare around the world, including
building hospitals and clinics, focusing attention on the health of citizens and adopting better
technologies. One of the ongoing issues, however, was the safety and quality of devices originating
from overseas, particularly China.
In 2007, the US medical devices industry saw healthy growth, thanks to strong sales of medical
devices. As a result, the shares of most leading medical devices companies rose in the second half
of 2007.

Rhetorical Analysis of Assata Shakur
Assata shakur was a member of the Black Panthers movement and was the most wanted person by
the FBI. She was charged with first degree murder, assault, and battery of a police officer because
of her activism, which brought resentment against her. This compelled her to move to Cuba, where
she still lives today. She s also Tupac Shakur step aunt. In To My People , she expresses her

The Debate Between Creation And Evolution
The debate between creation and evolution has been around for a long time. For much of it, it has
presented a choice between the two. Some claim that you either believe in God or evolution, not
both. Others, that you have to choose young earth creationism simply because theistic evolution is
not a viable option. Still more present young earth creationismas a naive understanding of both the
Bible and science. However, since each position has evidence in support of it and against it, it is in
no way true that any of them present us with an undeniable position of definite accuracy.
Furthermore, the idea that there is only a choice between creation and evolution is false. Indeed,
there are more positions than even creationism and theistic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is for this reason that the debate is also not between science and Christianity. Each advocate for
each position is attempting to reconcile the apparent differences between science and Christianity. It
is simply the case that they each take a different approach and give different amounts of authority to
science and a literal interpretation of Genesis.
The first position is that of young earth creationism. Additionally, this is what most people mean
when referring to creationism. This is primarily due to the fact that the creationists visible in the
public eye during the creation evolution debate were most likely to hold young earth creationist
views. Additionally, the terms recent earth or recent creation have been used to refer to this same
position. These terms clearly define their position as one in which the creation of the world
occurred somewhat recently, that is, the world is young. However, it obviously doesn t provide us
with much information beyond that. To begin with, how young is the world? In order to help
answer this and other questions concerning young earth creationism, biologist and philosopher of
science Paul Nelson and philosopher John Mark Reynolds, both fellows of the Center for Science

Compare And Contrast The Movie Willy Wonka And The...
As long as I can remember, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has been a childhood movie
favorite of mine. I had grown up watching several of Gene Wilder s movies and Willy Wonka
was one of my three favorite roles that he had played. I can t recall exactly how old I was the
first time I watched the original version since it was first released in 1971 and I hadn t even been
born then. Nevertheless, I do recall being intrigued when it was announced that another version was
to be released in 2005 titled, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After all, the movie stared Johnny
Depp and was directed by Tim Burton. I had liked Johnny Depp since he starred in 21 Jump Street
and there are too many well known Tim Burton movies to discuss. However, it did not even take
watching the entire movie for me to realize differences between the two films. In my opinion, Willy
Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory is hands down better than the remade version, Charlie and the
Chocolate Factoryin the areas of acting, storyline, and the overall feeling you have when you watch
the movie.
The first movie I watched in order to make my comparison was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory, 1971. A story about Charlie Bucket, good hard working boy from a poor family. He, his
mother and bedridden grandparents live in a town where a great chocolate factory has been
closed to the public for years. The recluse Chocolatier, Willy Wonka, closed his factory to avoid
his secrets being stolen by his

Discrimination And The Egalitarian Sentiment On...
Discrimination as Virtue In contrast to the egalitarian sentiment on discrimination, namely that it is
almost universally bad, discrimination per se must be exposited and defended against these. There
is a usage of discrimination such that it is always unjust, based on superficial qualities and thus
policies opposing discriminationright a wrong. Rather, discrimination is not only virtuous, it is
natural and necessary. Discrimination, considered for itself, is only the practice of discerning
between individuals for similar and dissimilar traits. Most abstractly, it is only to note that not
everything is equal, nor everything unequal, and that we shall preference those things we evaluate
as being proportionate to the significance of a role. That we discriminate is not hard to
demonstrate: we discriminate, for instance, whenever we choose to marry one person rather than
another. Furthermore, it would be strongly insisted by nearly everyone that this discrimination is
not only permissible, it is required for the formation of a family. Parents should like their daughters
to choose husbands suitable to raising children, and sons to choose wives suitable to the same task.
The community, parents, and those getting married have a strong preference for those they evaluate
as possessing those traits, and select out from potential partners those that demonstrate little
potential for the demands of the role. Not all discrimination is just per se; there are better and
worse uses of

How I Learned To Drive Play Analysis
In John Patrick Shanley s play, Doubt: A Parable , and Paula Vogel s play, How I Learned to
Drive , both have strong themes of sexuality in the forms of sexual predation and pedophilia.
Although these two stories are considerably different, the message is the same. Doubt is a play
that concerns a mystery over whether or not a boy (Donald) has been raped by a priest, and How I
learned to Drive is a play about a woman (Li l Bit) who reminisces about the sexual molestation and
the emotional manipulation she had to endure at the hands of her uncle. Although these plays both
have main theme of sexuality, they each have vastly different settings, desires, and outcomes. In
this essay, I will compare and contrast the theme of sexuality in both of these plays. When... Show

church s response to the allegations was to promote Father Flynn by sending him to another
church (Shanley 1712). Donald s mother was not appalled or even slightly stunned by the
allegations. She was more concerned about Donald getting into a good high school and protecting
him from his dad s physical abuse (Shanley 1709). Li l Bit s mother knew that Uncle Peck was
more than a little attentive, and yet, allowed her to continue to see him anyway (Vogel 1606). In
both plays, the families each had a hand in the destruction of a child s

The Dutch Republic Downfall Essay
Within 1650 to 1713 the Dutch Republic underwent a formidable transformation, which changed its
status as a major influence in Europe. The Dutch Republic was a political union of seven provinces
that was not only an impressive banking and commercial capital, but the Dutch also had a great
navy as well. Additionally, the center of flourishment in the Dutch Republicwas Amsterdam, which
was the foremost trading and banking center in all of Europe. The changing environment of the late
seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries forced the Dutch Republicinto a position of conflict and
unbalance, which proved detrimental to their country as a whole. One of the first challenges to the

Additionally, another major conflict of militaristic means was against the English, in which
approximately 2,000 to 2,700 Dutch ships were seized by the English in the three Anglo Dutch
Wars, (Doc. 3). This document primarily showed that Dutch had major troubles with their security
to other foreign nations. England was the main competitors of the Dutch for trade during this time
period, and these seizing of ships made perfect sense if the English wanted to come out on top. For
example, these conflicts are shown on a map of the naval battles between the English and Dutch,
during the years 1652 1674, (Doc. 1). On the map the most battles occurred between the Dutch trade
route that went through waters close to England, which ended up being one of the biggest
challenges to the Dutch republic militarily. Marquis de Pamponne, French ambassador to the Dutch
Republic, reported to the French government that the wars between the English and Dutch were
primarily over trade and obtaining trade routes, (Doc. 11). This document was written by a foreign
opinion to the French government because the French were obviously curious about these conflicts
that were occurring. More importantly, this document showed trade routes were a major cause of
challenges on the military on the Dutch, which caused an increase

Support Group Community Analysis
Community is basically a social unit where like minded people interact, network and hold
conversations on topics of mutual interest. Of late, many Facebook communities have come into
play, and have also commanded immense popularity. The virtual presence of these groups means
that all those who have access to Internet can join them if it interests them. There are so many
communities on Facebook catering to a wide range of people and their interests it is hard for a
person to not find a community, which does not interest them.
For instance, there is a community by the name SWOT s guide to food this rekindles the love of
food and restaurant eating, and is highly useful for those seeking information or reviews about a

Facebook. Depending on the sensitivity of the topics discussed in the group, they can be open,
closed or secret. Members need not feel insecure or violated.
Facebook communities serve as great platforms for individuals wanting to reconnect with one of

Reflection On Multicultural Counseling
Starting this course in August, I didn t realize the power that multicultural counseling had instilled
in it. The fact that its central focus is around social justice and equality is a characteristic our
society much needs today. Throughout the duration of this class, I learned about multicultural
counseling as a whole, new theories that can be applied specifically to different racial/ethnic
minorities, the ACA code of ethics, and who I wantto be as a future counselor.
In the beginning of the course I had very little knowledge about the theories in multicultural
counseling. I knew that it was centrally focused around social justice and equality but I didn t know
there were theories that pertained to specific ethnic minorities. I also learned that there isn t a
one size fits all theory. What I learned was that each model needs to be unique to the client and
very well rounded; it should include a specific goal(s), describe the process, have both aspects of
cognition and emotion, and include justice and equity as well. (Jun 2010) I have learned that as a
multicultural counselor you have to be very aware and mindful of your thoughts and actions. I
learned that there is a lot that is integrated into multicultural counseling and it isn t cut and dry.
There are varieties of concepts, such as being aware of oppression, continuous self reflection,
awareness of impact that a multicultural counselor can have on an individual, etc. (Jun, 2010) I was
happy to read that social

Limitations Of Technology
Limitations of Technology An exploration of the printing press
Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1398 1468) s printing press was created in the mid 15th century
Guttenberg used his moveable type machine to print the first mass produced book the Gutenberg
bible, also known as the 42 line bible, named after the number of lines per column. The publication
was printed at the rate of 300 pages per day, an unrealistic quantity during the time of print made
possible by his invention. Metal letter forms copied manuscript letters of the time as closely as
possible, printing the lingual script of the era Textura Quadrata, a form of Blackletter. Guttenberg
was said to have included alterations of letters in order to copy the irregularities of handwriting,
even joining letters to be used as scribes in order to control letter fitting.[1]
The printing press is a revolutionary example of technology. Not only because of its status as a
machine, but also because it fits within a range of conceptual definitions of technology.
Technology is an idea, device, tool or object that extends capabilities beyond its defined
restrictions. For example, the mobile phone is categorised as technology because it allows for
communication between people when distance becomes too great of an obstacle, and does so at a
faster rate than the letter, which would have solved this problem in an earlier time, but due to the
outdated nature of its technology, wouldn t be used on the same scale in todays society. This printer

Indian and European Conflict in the New World Essay
Indian and European Conflict in the New World Since 1492 to late into the17th the century there
was perpetual struggle between the power hungry Europeans and the natives in the New World.
Pitted against each other, the Dutch, English, French, Spaniards, and Indians struggled to maintain
control of what they viewed as rightfully theirs. The English, were struggling to settle on the
eastern coast and had no use and respect for the Indians or their land and way of life. At first

After 1712 however, as Nash has pointed out, Penn had little role in the affairs of Pennsylvania. In

Indigenous People In The Spanish
The Spanish focused on concentrating indigenous populations in villages or missions, where they
could be Christianized and forced to work for the Crown. Within these Spanish ruled villages the
ethnic differences between indigenous peoples were dissolved and gave way to a new one with the
acquisition of the Quechua language . As a result, a new identity as Quechua speaking people
emerged in the region and the pre hispanic identities vanished (Scazzocchio a1979). It is very likely
that their pre Hispanic identities disappeared around the 17th and 18th centuries. Moreover, the
Spanish rule and the mission system imposed a social structure and classification which were to

Impact Of Black Friday
Impact of Black Friday on Society
We already know that the Black Friday is an American tradition that consists of a drop in prices in
major stores, during the last Friday of November, coinciding with the opening of Christmas
shopping. But what is the origin of this celebration?
The first use of the term Black Friday occurred not to refer to Christmas shopping, but in relation
to an economic crisis: on Friday, September 24, 1869, two relentless Wall Street financiers, Jay
Gould and Jim Fisk, After an intense work to obtain great benefits, they failed in their efforts, and
the market went bankrupt. For that reason, that day was named as the Black Friday .
Another of the stories that accompany the term Black Friday has to do with the role of small
businesses in the market. Tradition has it that, after a whole year of losses, finally, after
Thanksgiving, the Christmas season arrived, the day from which the benefits began, and with them,
instead of red numbers, black numbers were produced.
Others claim that its origin dates back to November 19, 1975, the day in which the New York
Times first coined the adjective black to refer to the disorder of the traffic and the chaos that had
occurred in the city of Nueva York in that year, due to discounts the day after Thanksgiving.
The tradition is indeed a positive practice for the economy of a country, simultaneously, gives the
possibility to millions of hard workers to recover their lost through the year, and to

Pakistan s Leather Industry
Introduction
Pakistan s leather industry is an exceptionally noteworthy industry for Pakistan regarding fares.
Helping a lot of outside trade in Pakistan, this industry has the potential of conveying more and
giving a substantial number of employments by enhancing item go and enhancing quality.
The industry itself dates back to the colonial era where in few number of tanneries was working in
large cities such. as Karachi, Lahore,.and New Delhi etc. In the 1950s the number of well equipped
tanneries increased in Karachi, Lahore and other major industrial cities.
The industry s center items in Pakistan are leather articles of clothing, gloves, tanned leather and
footwear. In the 50s and 60s the majority of the tanned cowhide was sent out in crude structure
however not long after the nearby tanning industry making semi completed calfskin made quick
advancement in making completed items because of accessibility of crude material, work and

Title: BCAT2
Enzymes the most important role of enzyme is to increase the speed of reactions to the extend that
some reactions are multiplied millions of times in fraction of second. Another factor about enzymes

Essay on Ivan the Terrible
Ivan the Terrible
I m doing my report on Ivan the Terrible. Ivan Vasiljevich the Terrible was born in 1530 and died
in 1584. He was the son of the Grand Duke Vasili III. His mother Helena Glinsky was the
daughter of a Luthuanian refugee who had found asylum in Russia. She was young, vivacious,
intelligent, and beautiful. Vasili had married her after he tried to have an heir for 20 years with his
first wife Salome.
Vasili was in his 50 s, and Helenawas 20 when Ivan was born. Ivan had another brother Yuri born
18 months later.
The day of Ivans birth, August 25, 1530, was a joyful one. The Grand Duke ordered prison doors

Ivan and his boyhood friends would ride their horses full speed down the streets of Moscow. Some
citizens who were lucky escaped with no more than a scare, others were trampled beneath the horse
s hooves. Fighting with his friends was common.
Kicking, punching and biting, who ever won the struggle for power won, who ever lost was
sometimes beat to near death.
As Ivan grew older, he began to under stand the benefits of being a prince Czar. Because Ivan
grew up the way he did was why he became the ruler that he did. He knew from experience what
would happen if he wasn t a strong ruler. As a Czar, when Ivan met someone new, he would look
for the thing to fear in that person, then, he would do whatever it took to minimize whatever that
something was that he was afraid of. It might require taking harsh action, but then Ivan wouldn t
have to worry about that person becoming too powerful.
Along with the early influences of the boyars, also came the influence of ideas gained from the
books that Ivan read. He read everything that he could get his hands on. Although there wasn t
much to read, he read it, including the Bible, religious books, and some of the Western books that
had been brought in from the Byzantine Empire.

Marxism Essay
Marxism Marxist criticism is inherently existentialist. One cannot know anything without having
been exposed to it as some sort of life experience. There is no knowledge a priori, as some of the
ancient philosophers would have us believe. Rather, knowledge is accumulated a posteriori,
through actual experience. Therefore, there is almost nothing that is inherent and absolute in our
knowledge. It can never be purely objective, as knowledge is absorbed through the grid of our
own perceptions, and that grid is in turn formed through our youthful socialization within our
particular culture. For this reason, Marxist analysis does not allow gut feeling or individual bias to
play too great a role in the debate. It is more important... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What possible reason could there be for this except to instill greater respect for police officers
lives and fear into their would be assassins? One may argue that police officers are exposed to
more dangerous situations than the average citizen, but no more so than your average criminal.
It is because people perceive cops as good, as agents that preserve the social order, that their lives
are accorded more respect. Of course, preserving the social order preserves the status quo of
power, keeping those at the top in power and those at the bottom in deprivation. The police are
thus representatives of the authorities at the top of the social hierarchy, and this is where they
derive their power and respect. On the other hand, criminals are locked up in cages and exposed
to an environment purposefully made horrendous. Under the good and bad retributive theories, it
is better to create a hell on earth for these bad guys as some sort of payback for the suffering they
have caused others. An eye for an eye hearkens back to the Laws of Hammurabi, but there does not
seem to be a readily available modern explanation for why society propagates suffering with
retributive theories of punishment. There are also utilitarian theories of punishment: we are
keeping the felons off the street for the greater safety of the non felons. However, utilitarian theories
do not account for the large percentage of the

Ender s Game By Orson Scott Card
Rufus Mosley Intro to Business Professor: Weisberg Exam 2 1.Ender s Game by Orson Scott
Card was a tremendous book. Though it may not have been the most entertaining book out there,
it definitely had some good points in the storyline. The themes I noticed in the book were
compassion and tyranny, along with the role that children can play. The protagonist in the book
is Ender Wiggins, and the antagonist is Peter Wiggins. The personal meaning I took from this
book is that it does not matter your age on what you can achieve. Ender is just a young boy who
leads and saves the world. The book takes place in the future even though it was written in the 80
s. Ender is born into a family of highly intelligent people. As a child he is hated by his brother,
Peter, along with other schoolmates and is protected by his sister, Valentine. He has to leave
Valentine behind when he is taken away to Battle School, which is located on a ship very far
away from earth so he can assist in the fight against the buggers. Ender shows off his extreme
intelligence and is separated from the rest of the recruits by Colonel Graff of the International
Fleet. Ender then becomes friends with a recruit name Alai. This aids Ender to make friends and fit
in with people. Ender is noticed by the military commanders because of his dominance in the mind
game . He is promoted to the Salamander Army shortly after. While in the Salamander Army, Ender
becomes friends with the only girl, Petra Arkanian, but is

Multi-Genre Project Analysis
My process for creating this project was fairly simple. Upon being informed of this assignment, my
gears started to turn. I asked my parents for possible ideas on my Multi Genre project. After
consulting with them, I determined my project would be dedicated to my late grandmother.
Upon deciding this, immediately, different emotions were present. I started off very optimistic and
elated on the calming effects the project would bring. While writing my five original pieces and
working on creating the website, I often felt waves of sadness and even began to tear up as I
presented pieces of the project to my peers and even the students in my class. Upon completing
the project, I began to feel at ease and felt as my grandmother were alive, she would be very proud
of the life decisions I am making. The time has come to now present the final project to my father
and my father s side of the family. I am apprehensive of the different emotions that will be
presented. Yet, at the same time, my continual hope is that my family continues to find comfort and
solace even though we continue to mourn the loss of our matriarch. ... Show more content on

Smoking in Public Buildings Should Be Banned
Smoking in Public Buildings Should be Banned Is it true that secondhand smoke can have almost
the same health effects as smoking a cigarette? Is it true that some countries have banned smoking
in public buildings already? Is it easy to guess how those bans turned out? The countries that
banned smoking in public buildings are experiencing fewer health problems in their citizens and
have had no negative economic effects due to the ban. Even though everyone should be able to do
what they want, where they want if it is not hurting anyone, smokingshould be banned in public
buildings because it causes health and environmental problems. Smoking causes health problems
for everyone around the world, not just people near smokers. Most people know that smoking can
cause countless health problems; a group of scientists conducted a study showing the effects of
secondhand smoke in nonsmokers. The scientists knew in 2004 that, on a worldwide scale, the
health concerns created by exposure to tobacco smoke for nonsmokers were not well known. They
tested people and found the effects from worldwide exposure in children and adults, and these
statistics have probably risen in the past ten years (Г–berg, Jaakkola, Woodward, Peruga, PrГјss
UstГјn). They found that Worldwide, 40% of children, 33% of male non smokers, and 35% of
female non smokers were exposed to second hand smoke in 2004. This exposure was estimated to

Once The Wart Character Analysis
The Wart walked up to the great sword for the third time. He put out his right arm softly and drew
it out as gently from a scabbard. (198). The Wart, a nickname for soon to be King Arthur was a
modest, curious, young boy who was into adventure. Once the Wart was crowned king, he was
named King Arthur. King Arthurgrew from a timid boy to become a strong ruler with the help of
his tutor Merlyn. The theme of might and right that recurred several times was based on Arthur.
The Wart was always good hearted both young and old, but when he pulled the sword from the
stone he had to apply all his lessons and morals to his rule. T.H. White uses might and right to
prove that Arthur is exceptional for his devotion and belief in Merlyn s ideas. Instead,... Show more

Arthur is a successful king, because he worked hard to understand Merlyn s morals and apply it
to his own system of governance. In order to obtain great power like Arthur did, you need might.
Arthur utters his explanation through a few words saying, Why can t you harness Might so that
it works for right? I know it sounds nonsense, but, I mean, you can t just say there is no such
thing. The Might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can t neglect it. You can t cut it out,
but you might be able to direct it, if you see what I mean, so that it was useful instead of bad.
(241). This quote shows that T.H. White proves force to equal justice and that Arthur can make a
seperation between power and justice. Arthur is remembered for his image of a civilized society,
and not for his role on the battlefield. He notices the good and bad of common people and allows
them to equal each other out. For example, under King Arthur s rule, Knights are allowed to fight
for a reason, but not for pity fun. Arthur uses Merlyn s knowledge from the lessons and turning into
multiple creatures to maintain a just political system with a progressive civilization. All of his
encounters with the warlike ants and the wise badger taught him to find might equals right. He
grew to believe in doing what is right and that everything in his society is considered right. His

Klein s Influence On Children And Young Essay
In terms of biological drives, Klein believed drives were aimed toward objects, such as an infant
seeking milk from a mother s breast. The object s in an infant s world, especially during the first
few months of life are essentially good or bad. Thus, if the child receives milk, the breast is good,
if not, it is bad. Klein posits that the objects within one s world as an infantconsist of gratification
and hostility. In addition to drives, infants are focused on the internal object, which is more of a
fantasy than an object based in reality, as the infant struggles to know the difference at this point
in life. These fantasies are representations of bodily instincts and urges that the infant can feel
physically and mentally. Thus in the case of the bad breast , the infant is frustrated and feels
discomfort due to not receiving the milk, and this is interpreted by the infant as if he or she was
being attacked by a hostile force. As the child develops, he or she begins to understand the good

She concludes that the superego is present at birth and the Oedipal complex occurs during the first
year of life as well. Klein theorized that the ego and superego continue based on functions the
caregiver performed for the child. She notes that the good breast is the main point allowing the ego
to develop, similar to the good enough mother posed by Winnicott. Klein notes that life and death
instinct are deflected onto an external object which is often the breast, either satisfying or
frustrating. Thus the breast is the object allowing the child to begin the development of the ego.
The superego stems from an infant s views of his or her parents, thus they are not accurate
representations but based on the infant s feelings and fantasies that lead to superego

Humanities Reflection
Nice discussion post this week! We both agree with the articles by Kristof and Kaleem and I
enjoyed as well. The quote you have mentioned also makes a lot of sense to me too and got me
thinking. I struggled with the big questions of life and still am, but I have been able to have a
much better appreciation for life and have had a better time at finding that true purpose. Having
a lot of information thrown at us constantly though can be challenging, I do not blame you! I
agree with too that the humanities can help people to stay grounded in an ever changing
informational world; I know it has for me. This is why I agree with the articles because the
humanities should be taught and explored in the academic setting. Living in a digital world
definitely has pros (communication, medical advances, etc.) and cons, such as social media at
times like you have mentioned. It has done and will do so much for us, but it also can be too
much at times. Luckily my parents raised me to appreciate life and what I have and I never was
fixated on my phone or electronics . I think that is why I became an artist myself. I needed a way
to express my self and spend my time. Art was the answer for me. It allowed me to find myself
and express myself in a way an electronic could not for me. After reading the article Extraordinary
Outsiders: The Makers Who Don t Know They re Artists this week I could really relate because

The Issue Of Premarital Sex
Cohabitation was once considered deviant and unlawful by society, as it was considered to be a
proclamation of premarital sex. (Gault Sherman Draper, 2012). As attitudes toward cohabitation
have become progressively acceptable, it has become increasingly prevalent in today s culture.
(Gault Sherman Draper, 2012). As a result, there has been a decline in the number of couples that
are choosing marriage. Research indicates the likelihood of divorce is increased when a couple
lives together prior to marriage, increasing 166% if the wife had premarital sex and cohabited
with another man before her husband. (Alvare, 2004). There is evidence that despite the rise in
numbers of couples cohabiting, Americans desire more. [T]hey do not merely aspire to
parenthood; they do not aspire to a brief or even life long cohabiting relationship. They aspire to
marriage, and the intrinsic permanence of marriage...Pursuing marital happiness today, then, seems
to require a greater unification in law, policy, and culture of messages about sex and marriage
(Alvare, 2004).
Churches and religious organizations often approach the topic of cohabitation from a judgmental
standpoint, and immediately condemn the behavior. Cohabiting couples who reach out to the
church for guidance or seek premarital counseling need healing and restoration, not condemnation.
Consideration needs to be given to the reasons for cohabiting in order to determine the most
effective approach. Marriage Preparation and

Ender Wiggin Movie Analysis
On average, babies cry a total of two to three hours a day, according to mayoclinic.org.
Ender Wiggin exceeds that amount greatly. Throughout the book Ender cries many times, but in
the end, he will man up and overcome his fears, but still end up crying. Ender Wiggin was the best
out of his two other siblings, both of them failed to pass into the International Fleet, but for Ender
he passed. Training hard in battle school, resulted in defeating the Buggers. Ultimately, he still
ended up crying. Obviously the book is extremely better than the movie because of one main
reason, the movie left out key components that juiced up the story, that allowed the viewer/reader to
get hooked into the story. That is why the book is better than the movie.

he got through it through hard work and many challenges throughout it all. In the movie, it
jumped past many struggles Ender had undergone while working his way up the standings. It
seemed he was more gifted in the movie than in the book where it took doubling up practice to
get better. The second major difference shown in the movie was not showing what was going on
back at Earth with Valentine and Peter. It never showed or referred to Ender s siblings at all after
the beginning of the movie. It did not even say anything about Peter, and how he has taken over the

Explain The Modern Quantity Theory And Liquidity Theory
Discuss the modern quantity theory and the liquidity preference theory.
The Quantity Theory of Money is an economic theory that states that the level of money supply in
an economy is directly proportional to the general price level.
In conformity with Wright, R. E., Quadrini, V. (2009), he states that the modern quantity theory is
superior to Keynes s liquidity preference theory because it is more complicated, specifying three
types of assets (bonds, equities, goods) instead of just one (bonds). It also does not assume that the
return on money is zero, or even a constant. In Friedman s theory, velocity is no longer a constant;
rather, it is highly predictable and, as in reality and Keynes s formulation, pro cyclical, rising
during expansions and falling during recessions Friedman, M. (Ed.). (1956). Friedman s
reformulation of the quantity theory delayed well only until the 1970s, ... Show more content on

In addition to that, not like the liquidity preference theory, Friedman s modern quantity theory
foretell based on observation that interest rate changes should have little effect on money demand.
The cause for this is that Friedman believed that the return on bonds, stocks, goods, and money
would be positively mutual relations, providing direction to little change in rb rm, rs rm, or ПЂe

The New Deal A Good Deal
Was the New Deal a Good Deal?
Hunter Simmons
The New Deal, introduced to get America out of the Great Depression, was a good deal. It
brought the US out of a massive hole of poverty by creating jobs and creating regulations to help
the economy stabilize. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 can be blamed for the start of the Great
Depression, after millions went into panic when their investments fell through. After Woodrow
Wilson failed to help the working class in a worsening economy, Americans looked for new hope in
Franklin D. Roosevelt, elected in 1933, to help them come out of this terrible depression. He
responded by creating numerous administrations and programs over the course of 5 years. These
programs were designed to create unskilled labor and support the poor to help stimulate the
economy again. His plan succeeded up to the second world war, where economy started to boom
when a higher work force was needed. The first step Roosevelt took to create economic stability
was to create jobs. Administrations such as the Public Works Administration created millions of
jobs for the unemployed, including building many bridges, hospitals, schools, and more (New Deal
Public Works Administration projects). The Civilian Conservation Corps also created unskilled
labor such as planting trees and building state parks, which in turn helped the environment and
conserve resources. By lowering the unemployment rate, Roosevelt helped the US get back on their
feet. Some say that

Allusion In Kurt Vonnegut s Story 2BRO2B
In life, the perfect ideas might just ruin lives. Whether the topic is as big as people not aging or
as little as a new law, there is always a positive but there is always a negative. In 2BRO2B, Kurt V.
uses symbolism, irony, and allusion to convey the theme that life cannot be perfect.
Kurt Vonnegut uses figurative language in his story 2BRO2B. For example, the title is a perfect
representation of allusion. The title means to be dead or not to be dead. In the story, if you want
to die you dial 2bro2b to go to the gas chambers. Therefore, either you dial or you do not. You are
either dead or not dead. Another representation of allusion in Kurt Vonneguts 2BRO2B is how the
old man compares the nurse s clothes to the grapes on judgement day. He was referring to the day
that god can judge everyone. The nurses have the same power as god and the old man feels it is
too much power. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of symbolism is the painting of the utopian world. The old man is painting a picture
of women and men making this perfect garden by pulling weeds and getting rid of the ugly

using gas chambers are killing people. Even though the people want to be dead, it is still
representing the weeds that are pulled in the picture. The weeds must be puled so there is more
room for the flowers, which is symbolic to the system that every time someone is born, someone
must die. Another example of symbolism is the messy drop cloth. The drop cloth is not clean. It
has flaws and the old painter decided to show the readers that the drop cloth is a better
representation of life than the picture because life is messy and people could not see

animation market and to be in competition with American animators, and/or because, like
American animators, overseas animators also enjoy exercising their creativity, talents, computer
animation skills and fascinating story telling skills when it comes to animated movies and video
games (Crosby). Also, another reason why the animation studios and companies are hiring
overseas animators could possibly be the fact that 56.9% of animators [are] self employed
(Collegefortn.org). By animators adapting to this effective solution, American self employed
animators, who want to begin their animation companies and studios, can come into collaboration
with aspiring animators, employing teams of fellow animators. This would bring more jobs and
opportunities to American animators. And lastly, the reason why overseas animators are hired by
American animation studios and companies, is due to the fact that in the past decades animation
studios have been sending unfinished animation work to overseas animators to complete. As
said by Tom Crosby, in an article of How Stuff Works titled How Outscoring Works , This isn t a
new trend. It started decades ago when Hollywood studios began sending pre production work to

Gender Equality In Iron Jawed Angels
Tuesday, November 8 2016 was the first time I was old enough to vote for the presidential
election. After watching Iron Jawed Angels, I realized how much I have taken for granted in my
life and how incredibly grateful I am for all of the women that have fought for women equality
including; Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. There are still on going debates in todays society about
genderequality, but it s crazy to see how 100 plus years ago some of the rights women have now,
going to school and voting, didn t exist. In 1912, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns fought together
among other women for the right to vote. They fought for not only white women, but women of
all races. Throughout Iron Jawed Angels the women fought hard, even during the time of war
and while they were in jail, for their rights and equality. It wasn t until August 26, 1920 that
women could vote. Before that women could not attend college or pursue training for most
professions (Woods, 57). During the movie, Alice Paul was creating a friendship with a male
who taught her how to drive which is interesting because in todays society almost every women
knows how to drive or has the privilege to drive but back then only men drove or could even afford
a car because they had the right to work. In the movie Iron Jawed Angels, Senetor Leighton and
his family are described as a stereotypical family during their time period. He provides for his wife

A Comparison of Prince Hamlet and Machiavelli s The Prince
Machiavelli states that it is necessary for a prince, who wishes to maintain himself, to learn how
not to be good, and use this knowledge and not use it, according to the necessity of the case.
Machiavelli s ideas both compare and contrast to the methods used by Hamlet. Hamlet s desire to
drive the king mad and eventually kill him, is what he thinks he must do in order to set things right.
Hamlet struggles to maintain his position as prince. Perhaps he lacks the essential qualities of a

unprofitable. (Hamlet, I, ii., 133)
Hamlet must soon come to disregard his sense of morality in order to save himself, and he does,
proving the second part of Machiavelli s quote: Therefore, it is necessary for a prince, who
wishes to maintain himself, to learn how not to be good ... The first signs of this appear when
the players arrive at the court. He shows that he can learn how not to be good, when he uses the
first player s skill to his advantage. He asks the player You could study a speech of some dozen
or sixteen lines, which I would set down and insert in t, couldn t you? (Hamlet, II, ii., 534 536)
The player then agrees that he will insert the speech written by Hamlet into his own speech, on the
night of the play. In his soliloquy, Hamlet mentions how he will use the player s acting

Marshall Harvey Farewell To The South Analysis
Now that the war is over, the south is stuck in a state of despair. Southerner s land is less
valuable, as is cotton. The south used to rest on the labor of slave, but now slavery is abolished.
Although the south is in a dilemma, the north is helping to get the south back on its feet. According
to Marshall Harvey Twichell the north has decided people could deduct school taxes and educate
their children, if they do educate them, on their own. I was very much surprised when I returned
home to find that this act had made me very unpopular with the white people, who rightly looked
upon it as a distinctly Northern idea. Another thing Twichell said was he had been informing both
blacks and whites about their relationship no longer being master

The Evolution Of Human Animals
Humans, formally known as Homo sapiens, are some of the most fascinating creatures to inhabit
this planet. We as human animals possess many traits unique to our species, but one of the most
remarkable traits is our upright posture and inherent inclination to walk on two legs. We share this
rare trait with few organisms, who even so only express limited bipedal behaviors. Humanancestors
first initiated the transition to bipedalismapproximately 6 million years ago through the upright
steps of the Sahelanthropus. However, Homo erectus was the first human ancestor to express full
bipedality, which occurred only 1.9 million years ago. Some of the preceding forms of locomotion
used by human ancestors included quadrupedalism or pronograde posture, suspensory locomotion,
and knuckle walking (Watson, 2008). These forms of motion were used not only by human
ancestors such as the Australopithecus afarensis, but can also be observed in modern times in some
of our close relatives, apes and chimpanzees. This transition to bipedalism was facilitated by
structural changes comprised of an angled thigh bone, a more sturdy and broad pelvis, a wider
patella, an S shaped spine, and long femurs. The compilation of all of these adaptations allowed
hominids to not only support their entire body weight while standing upright, but efficiently take
long strides, therefore allowing them to travel greater distances. Though much is known about the
implications for the transition to bipedality, the

Fallacies In Marco Rubio s Presidential Campaign
Presidential campaigns often thrive on fallacies. Trump is a perfect example of this, but is not
the only one. Hillary Clinton, Martin O Malley, Ben Carson, etc. Marco Rubio s campaign, in
particular, relies on a overly sentimental appeals as well as combination of fallacies resulting in a
scare tactic. Marco Rubio s presidential campaign website poses several questions on the front
page, asking if you want to win or if you are ready. These questions imply Marco Rubio is the
right choice, that you must vote for him or else no good will come from the November election.
These questions are fallacious for they imply Rubio is the right choice when that itself is under to

Similarities Between Jeffersonian And Jacksonian Eras
The main themes I noticed in this week s material were pushing the powers of the presidency and
curbing those powers, manifest destiny, changes within the political parties, and the idea of fighting
for the little guy.
Some significant continuities I saw in the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian eras were the fundamentals
of the party in power. From Jefferson s presidency throughout Jackson s, sitting presidents typically
advocated for small government and for a strict construction of the constitution (Milkis and Nelson
131). Conversely, some significant changes I saw were to the political parties themselves, both the
Federalists and the Democratic Republicans saw many changes to their parties. And lastly, Jackson
s reinventing of the use of the Veto... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Up until Jackson s presidency, a veto was only used to stop a piece of legislation if the President
viewed it as unconstitutional (Milkis and Nelson 137). However, Jackson believed that a
president should reject any bill he felt would injure the nation (Milkis and Nelson 138). This new
interpretation of the veto gave the President the power to reject legislation on personal opinion
alone. Although Congress was clearly disturbed with Jackson s veto, he maintained the people s
faith and was reelected as president the same year (Milkis and Nelson 138 139).
What I was most surprised by this week was Jackson s wording in much of the Indian Removal
Act. There were a couple places that seemed to just fall short of inciting violence. Despite knowing
the carnage that followed, I guess I expected the bill itself to be less odious. Jackson also
announced his legal inability to protect Indians from state authorities if they chose not to volunteer
their lands, clearly suggesting that any lingering natives in state territories were free to abuse
(Brinkley and Dyer 94). Obviously, the intent was nefarious, I was just shocked that there was no
attempt to mask that

Essay on The Life of Sir Isaac Newton
Over the centuries, math has evolved in an astounding way. Since the beginning of time, there have
been many mathematicians that has influenced and contributed to the math we know today. None
compares to the work of Sir Isaac Newton. He was influential as a person, as well as in his work.
Sir Isaac Newton was born on December 25, 1642 in Wools Thorpe, Lincolnshire. Shortly after his
father s death, Newton was born premature and was not expected to survive. After his father s
death, his mother got remarried to an ignorant man. His stepfather didn t seem to like him, so he
was then sent away to live with his grandmother. At the age of eleven, his stepfather died. After the
death, he decided to move back home with his mother.

In 1667, Newton returning to Cambridge and quickly completed all his requirements for a master s
degree. His greatest discoveries and innovations came about during his years at Cambridge.
Newton was the one to formulate the theory of universal gravity. It is claimed that, when he
watched an apple fall from a tree he wondered if the force that caused that the apple to fall was
also the force that kept the moon in its orbit. According to the text in Newton (1642), his theory
that is described in Newton s law is that gravitational force depends on the mass of each object.
His doubt wasn t about the fact that gravity existed, but whether it was what was keeping the
moon in its orbit. He figured that, if the force was to be decreased he would be able to calculate
the Moon s orbital period. He figured that this was the same force responsible for other motions in
the orbit and with his hypothesis; he decided to call this theory universal gravitation. With many
trials and errors he could not get his calculations to match his theories; he finally figured out his
error, he had been using the wrong formula to figure out the diameter of the Earth.
According to Harper (2006), Newton s distinction between absolute and relative motion is based on
his laws of motion, which he described as accepted by mathematicians and confirmed by
experiments of many kinds . His distinctions between absolute and relative

Wal Mart is a company based in North America but has become the largest retailer and is larger

Revolt of 1857
The First War of Indian Independence or The Great Revolt of 1857: The Indian soldiers in the
East India Company s army rebelled against the British in 1857. The English historians have
painted this revolt as a mutiny of the sepoys. But the Indian historians describe it as the First war
of Indian Independence. It is also known as the Great Revolt of 1857. Lord Canning was the
Governor General of India at that time. The causes of the Great Revolt were many. They may be
classified as political, administrative, economic, social, religious, military and immediate causes. 1.

Measures like the suppression of Sati and female infanticide, remarriage of widows and the right
of inheritance to Christian converts offended the Indian orthodox sentiments. 5. Religious Causes :
The Christian missionaries were active in propagating Christianity. These activities created a sense
of fear in the minds of the Indians. They suspected that the British were out to destroy their
religions and convert India into a Christian land. This declaration created a great anger and
disbelief against the British rule. Religious sentiments were aroused when the British imposed
taxes on the lands belonging to temples and mosques. The priests and the maulvis showed their
discontent against the British rule. All these activities made the British unpopular. 6. Military
Causes : The Indian soldiers were called the Sepoys. They constituted the majority of the British
army in India. In fact, the sword of the British power rested on the loyalty and strength of these
Indian Sepoys. But they were treated with contempt and made to feel inferior by the British. They
were paid less than their British counterparts. The Indian sepoys had no chance of promotion in the
army. They were prohibited from their traditional religious practices like wearing a saffron mark on
their forehead, growing beard and wearing turbans. Lord Cannings Government passed in 1856,

Fluids from one of the artificial blossoms dripped onto a colored reptile s head, causing it to
contort violently and pass away agonizingly. This imparts how scienceis able to devise potent
materials capable of stripping organisms of their lives. A delicate winged insect was attracted by
the heavy perfumes of the artificial flowers and was killed, suggesting that detrimental scientific
discoveries can destroy innocence by luring unsuspecting individuals into its pitfall and annihilate
them. The psychotic scientist, Giacomo Rappaccini, is described as a sickly, elderly man lacking
warmth of hearth and wearing black clothing. This indicates that the process of making scientific
improvements itself can be damaging to the scientist and can eliminate them of their morals, as
black symbolizes evil which suits Rappaccini due to him seeking human test subjects. Once
Beatrice realizes the enormity of the mischief imposed by Rappaccini, she promptly consumed the
phial with the antidote and begins to fade away while having a desperate dialogue with Rappaccini

advancement can have such a profound impact on an individual that he considers death or the
potential of death as an alternative to escape the horrors of science. The startling descriptions of the

This targets and accommodates a specific age and an emerging group with plenty of disposable
income, the baby boomers. More and more baby boomers are joining the elderly population by
retiring and collecting social security, and by mid 21st century 27% will be 60 and older.
Retirees do not just sit on their money, they spend are consumers! We will see in increase of
consumerism simply from a numerical standpoint since there are so many of them. Age related
design works if there is an adequate market for it, so pretty much the larger the market, the larger
chance of making money. Therefore the baby boomers would be the superlative target for age
related design. However, age related design demands attention to detail and requires understanding
the individual needs of the targeted consumers. A foundation that would help would be empathetic
modeling. This method places the designer in the shoes of the consumer, allowing him or her to
understand the feelings, aspirations and fears of said target. Thoroughly examining the individual
s needs, will lead to superior real world performance. Another vital aspect of designing for the
older population is to know the demographic. Knowing the consumer s status, such as if they are
independent, dependent, wealthy or healthy helps in deciding quality, functionality and price of
the product. However, an area to avoid would be labeling products as for the elderly because your
targeted group may not see themselves as elderly or

I Had A Good Day At Work Essay
I always had a positive outlook on everything when I was younger. In fact, up until this year, I
could still find the good in every negative situation. When I became depressed, though,
everything changed dramatically. I cant explain how confused I was. Nothing had happened to
make me feel the way I did; it really just came out of nowhere. Being a person who looks to logic
for explanation, I was not only depressed and confused, but irritated. I kept thinking, This is not
normal. Humans are not supposed to feel like this . I had always had the power to change my
attitude about almost anything. If I wanted to like something, I would; if I wanted to have a
good day at work, I would. But for the first time in my life, I was totally helpless. My power of
mind had failed me. I was totally screwed. Suddenly, nothing was good or fun, or even worth
doing. My favorite things seemed boring, and everything else seemed pointless. For some
reason, every song that I would hear would be sad to me...and not just kind of depressing, but
completely tragic. Every television show or movie seemed terrifying to me. My stomach would
be filled with adrenaline constantly for fear of what someone might say (knowing it would be
the saddest thing I d ever heard). Everything was so black, so endless, and so impossible. I had
become something I never wanted to be. I felt so distant from myself and everyone else. I wasn t

Considering the magnitude of the ageing population and socio economic changes around the world,
measures to keep older people healthy and active are of utmost importance. (WHO, 2007). In most
developed countries, population aging is a gradual process and most of the older adults live
independently. Traditionally it was the responsibility of the family to care for older adults. We
find ourselves in a care giving crisis as roles are changing, employment of women taking a major
role, erosion of traditional family values, and an increasing trend for nuclear families. (Dsouza,
2014). The number of older adults living alone is increasing. Older adults are living both in
residential care facilities or nursing homes and most often on their own in communities for the
aged. It is estimated that more than 50% of those living in nursing homes and residential
facilities fall every year and about 50% of these fall repeatedly. (CMS, 2014). The actual
incidence is likely to be even higher, since many falls are not reported. Falls often lead to reduced
functioning, which increases morbidity and mortality. Around 20% of falls need medical attention,
5 10% result in fractures (with one in five of these being a hip fracture), severe head injuries and
joint distortions, and 5 10% in soft tissue contusions hcdxd lacerations. Fall induced injuries are the

Students: Bodea Irina Paula Miu Alina Petrisoaia Dan Popa Andrei Ticmeanu Andrada 2012 The brand name Nike is one of the most recognized around the globe. The name is synonymous with high quality athletic shoes, apparel, and accessories in the minds of many people worldwide. Perhaps it is the compelling marketing that commands attention. He also wrote a book entitled Jogging in which he explained how to run for fun and fitness. During Bowerman s tenure at the University of Oregon, he had coached a young middle distance runner named Phil Knight. Knight wrote a research paper arguing that cheaper, high performance Japanese shoes could overthrow German dominance of the U.S. athletic shoe industry. On a trip to Japan, Knight contracted with the Onitsuka Tiger Company to sell its quality athletic shoes in the U.S. He made up the name Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) in 1962 and formed a partnership with Bowerman in 1964, each partner investing $500 in the business (Nike Timeline, 2006). Bowerman designed most of the prototypes and made suggestions for improvement to the Tiger Company, while Knight distributed the shoes from his father s basement and out of the back of his car at track meets. In 1965, Jeff Johnson, Knight s former track competitor at Stanford University, became the first full time employee of BRS. Under his guidance, BRS opened its first retail outlet in Santa Monica, California, in 1966 (Nike Timeline, 2006). In the following year, the company was incorporated. In 1971, Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student that Knight met at Portland State University, designed the swoosh for $35. Later that year, Jeff Johnson devised the name Nike, after the Greek goddess of triumph and victory. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On The Secret Of Humanity Humanity is a term that is used to describe essential characteristics of a human s nature. When most people think of humanity, they would think of it as having the emotional right to feel for others, compassion and morally good behaviors. While I do agree with this, in regard to this film, I view humanity as the total opposite. With the world evolving and changing every day, the definition of humanity has no exact answer. I would align the broad term of humanity with the phrase survival of the fittest, meaning that a person would do anything it takes to survive in this world. In the film The Secret of NIMH, it uses various animals to show many different perspectives of humanity that people have on a humans nature. While characters such... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is very uncommon for a small animal such as herself to be doing alone, especially with a huge cat by the name of Dragon lurking nearby. These actions alone demonstrate the depth of risks that she would take in order to save her children and her home. By her going out of her way to protect her loved ones, this shows the loving and determined characteristics she has as a mother which could possibly be described as being humane. Another character that many people may say have various aspects of humanity is Sullivan. Personally, Sullivan is a very interesting character in my opinion. Sullivan is Jenner s gullible, reluctant sidekick and temperamental pushover. Although he may seem very vulnerable, Jenner has a significant identity of his own. For example in the scene where the rats of NIMH were in the council chamber discussing their ideas about relocating to Thorn Valley, Sullivan was very intense and passionate about his opinions and he was not afraid to robustly voice them at all. I would also describe Sullivan s position in this movie as an anti villain due to his nervous and hesitant reactions when he and Jenner concocts the plan to kill Nicodemus. Jenner takes full advantage of Sullivan s weakness and manipulates him until Sullivan has change of mind during the act of killing Nicodemus. Many people could argue that Sullivan s neutral position and his change of heart in order to do the right thing justifies that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Medtronic vs Stryker Executive Summary The New Year started off well in the US medical devices industry and shows no signs of slowing down in 2008. The robust demand for medical equipment and the increasingly ageing population helped the shares of several medical devices makers outperform the market in the second half of 2007. We maintain the belief that, as a whole, the medical deviceindustry is highly profitable with high barriers to entry. In addition, during periods of economic uncertainty, medical equipmenthas seen continued gains. We are evaluating two companies within the Medical Equipment Industry: Stryker Corp. Most leading US medical devices manufacturers sought to introduce new products, secure market share and drive long term growth to remain competitive. Despite economic jitters in the US, the industry remained healthy and showed little sign of slowing down significantly in 2008. It serves more than 300 million people and should continue to be profitable. As patients continue to make their quality of life an important healthcare priority and are willing to invest in treatments, medical devices manufacturers and providers should experience growth. Medical device companies continued to devote time and money to determine national regulatory requirements, conduct additional overseas clinical trials and equip themselves new medical technologies. The demand for medical devices was driven by growing expenditure on healthcare around the world, including building hospitals and clinics, focusing attention on the health of citizens and adopting better technologies. One of the ongoing issues, however, was the safety and quality of devices originating from overseas, particularly China. In 2007, the US medical devices industry saw healthy growth, thanks to strong sales of medical devices. • 7. The Debate Between Creation And Evolution The debate between creation and evolution has been around for a long time. For much of it, it has presented a choice between the two. Some claim that you either believe in God or evolution, not both. Others, that you have to choose young earth creationism simply because theistic evolution is not a viable option. Still more present young earth creationismas a naive understanding of both the Bible and science. However, since each position has evidence in support of it and against it, it is in no way true that any of them present us with an undeniable position of definite accuracy. Furthermore, the idea that there is only a choice between creation and evolution is false. Indeed, there are more positions than even creationism and theistic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is for this reason that the debate is also not between science and Christianity. Each advocate for each position is attempting to reconcile the apparent differences between science and Christianity. It is simply the case that they each take a different approach and give different amounts of authority to science and a literal interpretation of Genesis. The first position is that of young earth creationism. Additionally, this is what most people mean when referring to creationism. This is primarily due to the fact that the creationists visible in the public eye during the creation evolution debate were most likely to hold young earth creationist views. Additionally, the terms recent earth or recent creation have been used to refer to this same position. These terms clearly define their position as one in which the creation of the world occurred somewhat recently, that is, the world is young. However, it obviously doesn t provide us with much information beyond that. To begin with, how young is the world? • 8. Compare And Contrast The Movie Willy Wonka And The... As long as I can remember, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has been a childhood movie favorite of mine. I had grown up watching several of Gene Wilder s movies and Willy Wonka was one of my three favorite roles that he had played. I can t recall exactly how old I was the first time I watched the original version since it was first released in 1971 and I hadn t even been born then. Nevertheless, I do recall being intrigued when it was announced that another version was to be released in 2005 titled, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After all, the movie stared Johnny Depp and was directed by Tim Burton. I had liked Johnny Depp since he starred in 21 Jump Street and there are too many well known Tim Burton movies to discuss. However, it did not even take watching the entire movie for me to realize differences between the two films. In my opinion, Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory is hands down better than the remade version, Charlie and the Chocolate Factoryin the areas of acting, storyline, and the overall feeling you have when you watch the movie. The first movie I watched in order to make my comparison was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, 1971. A story about Charlie Bucket, good hard working boy from a poor family. He, his mother and bedridden grandparents live in a town where a great chocolate factory has been closed to the public for years. • 9. Discrimination And The Egalitarian Sentiment On... Discrimination as Virtue In contrast to the egalitarian sentiment on discrimination, namely that it is almost universally bad, discrimination per se must be exposited and defended against these. There is a usage of discrimination such that it is always unjust, based on superficial qualities and thus policies opposing discriminationright a wrong. Rather, discrimination is not only virtuous, it is natural and necessary. Discrimination, considered for itself, is only the practice of discerning between individuals for similar and dissimilar traits. Most abstractly, it is only to note that not everything is equal, nor everything unequal, and that we shall preference those things we evaluate as being proportionate to the significance of a role. That we discriminate is not hard to demonstrate: we discriminate, for instance, whenever we choose to marry one person rather than another. Furthermore, it would be strongly insisted by nearly everyone that this discrimination is not only permissible, it is required for the formation of a family. Parents should like their daughters to choose husbands suitable to raising children, and sons to choose wives suitable to the same task. The community, parents, and those getting married have a strong preference for those they evaluate as possessing those traits, and select out from potential partners those that demonstrate little potential for the demands of the role. Not all discrimination is just per se; there are better and worse uses of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How I Learned To Drive Play Analysis In John Patrick Shanley s play, Doubt: A Parable , and Paula Vogel s play, How I Learned to Drive , both have strong themes of sexuality in the forms of sexual predation and pedophilia. Although these two stories are considerably different, the message is the same. Doubt is a play that concerns a mystery over whether or not a boy (Donald) has been raped by a priest, and How I learned to Drive is a play about a woman (Li l Bit) who reminisces about the sexual molestation and the emotional manipulation she had to endure at the hands of her uncle. Although these plays both have main theme of sexuality, they each have vastly different settings, desires, and outcomes. In Doubt , the St. Nicholas Catholic Church and school is like a family who (besides Sister Aloysius) does nothing to investigate Father Flynn over the accusations of child molestation. The church s response to the allegations was to promote Father Flynn by sending him to another church (Shanley 1712). Donald s mother was not appalled or even slightly stunned by the allegations. She was more concerned about Donald getting into a good high school and protecting him from his dad s physical abuse (Shanley 1709). The Dutch Republic was a political union of seven provinces that was not only an impressive banking and commercial capital, but the Dutch also had a great navy as well. Additionally, the center of flourishment in the Dutch Republicwas Amsterdam, which was the foremost trading and banking center in all of Europe. The changing environment of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries forced the Dutch Republicinto a position of conflict and unbalance, which proved detrimental to their country as a whole. Additionally, another major conflict of militaristic means was against the English, in which approximately 2,000 to 2,700 Dutch ships were seized by the English in the three Anglo Dutch Wars, (Doc. 3). This document primarily showed that Dutch had major troubles with their security to other foreign nations. England was the main competitors of the Dutch for trade during this time period, and these seizing of ships made perfect sense if the English wanted to come out on top. For example, these conflicts are shown on a map of the naval battles between the English and Dutch, during the years 1652 1674, (Doc. 1). On the map the most battles occurred between the Dutch trade route that went through waters close to England, which ended up being one of the biggest challenges to the Dutch republic militarily. Marquis de Pamponne, French ambassador to the Dutch Republic, reported to the French government that the wars between the English and Dutch were primarily over trade and obtaining trade routes, (Doc. 11). This document was written by a foreign opinion to the French government because the French were obviously curious about these conflicts that were occurring. • 13. Reflection On Multicultural Counseling Starting this course in August, I didn t realize the power that multicultural counseling had instilled in it. The fact that its central focus is around social justice and equality is a characteristic our society much needs today. Throughout the duration of this class, I learned about multicultural counseling as a whole, new theories that can be applied specifically to different racial/ethnic minorities, the ACA code of ethics, and who I wantto be as a future counselor. In the beginning of the course I had very little knowledge about the theories in multicultural counseling. I knew that it was centrally focused around social justice and equality but I didn t know there were theories that pertained to specific ethnic minorities. I also learned that there isn t a one size fits all theory. What I learned was that each model needs to be unique to the client and very well rounded; it should include a specific goal(s), describe the process, have both aspects of cognition and emotion, and include justice and equity as well. (Jun 2010) I have learned that as a multicultural counselor you have to be very aware and mindful of your thoughts and actions. I learned that there is a lot that is integrated into multicultural counseling and it isn t cut and dry. There are varieties of concepts, such as being aware of oppression, continuous self reflection, awareness of impact that a multicultural counselor can have on an individual, etc. (Jun, 2010) I was happy to read that social ... • 14. Limitations Of Technology Limitations of Technology An exploration of the printing press Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1398 1468) s printing press was created in the mid 15th century Guttenberg used his moveable type machine to print the first mass produced book the Gutenberg bible, also known as the 42 line bible, named after the number of lines per column. The publication was printed at the rate of 300 pages per day, an unrealistic quantity during the time of print made possible by his invention. Metal letter forms copied manuscript letters of the time as closely as possible, printing the lingual script of the era Textura Quadrata, a form of Blackletter. Guttenberg was said to have included alterations of letters in order to copy the irregularities of handwriting, even joining letters to be used as scribes in order to control letter fitting.[1] The printing press is a revolutionary example of technology. Not only because of its status as a machine, but also because it fits within a range of conceptual definitions of technology. Technology is an idea, device, tool or object that extends capabilities beyond its defined restrictions. For example, the mobile phone is categorised as technology because it allows for communication between people when distance becomes too great of an obstacle, and does so at a faster rate than the letter, which would have solved this problem in an earlier time, but due to the outdated nature of its technology, wouldn t be used on the same scale in todays society. Indian and European Conflict in the New World Essay Indian and European Conflict in the New World Since 1492 to late into the17th the century there was perpetual struggle between the power hungry Europeans and the natives in the New World. Pitted against each other, the Dutch, English, French, Spaniards, and Indians struggled to maintain control of what they viewed as rightfully theirs. The English, were struggling to settle on the eastern coast and had no use and respect for the Indians or their land and way of life. At first maintaining a tentative relationship, the English, in the case of the Quakers and Puritans, soon realized that the Indians had very little to offer and were an obstacle on the path of their progress. The land Penn s colony inhabited had comparatively few Indians, but this was subsequently beneficial because there was less of a chance for rivalry and competition. As long as Penn played an active roll in the happenings of his colony, there was little conflict or cause for complaint by both the settlers and the Indians. After 1712 however, as Nash has pointed out, Penn had little role in the affairs of Pennsylvania. In 1710 Swiss and German settlers arrived, whom did not share Penn s and the Quaker s pacifistic attitude, and who s land hunger and disdain for the Indians undermined the Quaker attitude of trust and love for the natives. Within these Spanish ruled villages the ethnic differences between indigenous peoples were dissolved and gave way to a new one with the acquisition of the Quechua language . As a result, a new identity as Quechua speaking people emerged in the region and the pre hispanic identities vanished (Scazzocchio a1979). It is very likely that their pre Hispanic identities disappeared around the 17th and 18th centuries. • 17. Impact Of Black Friday Impact of Black Friday on Society We already know that the Black Friday is an American tradition that consists of a drop in prices in major stores, during the last Friday of November, coinciding with the opening of Christmas shopping. But what is the origin of this celebration? The first use of the term Black Friday occurred not to refer to Christmas shopping, but in relation to an economic crisis: on Friday, September 24, 1869, two relentless Wall Street financiers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, After an intense work to obtain great benefits, they failed in their efforts, and the market went bankrupt. For that reason, that day was named as the Black Friday . Another of the stories that accompany the term Black Friday has to do with the role of small businesses in the market. Tradition has it that, after a whole year of losses, finally, after Thanksgiving, the Christmas season arrived, the day from which the benefits began, and with them, instead of red numbers, black numbers were produced. Others claim that its origin dates back to November 19, 1975, the day in which the New York Times first coined the adjective black to refer to the disorder of the traffic and the chaos that had occurred in the city of Nueva York in that year, due to discounts the day after Thanksgiving. The tradition is indeed a positive practice for the economy of a country, simultaneously, gives the possibility to millions of hard workers to recover their lost through the year, and to ... There is no knowledge a priori, as some of the ancient philosophers would have us believe. Rather, knowledge is accumulated a posteriori, through actual experience. Therefore, there is almost nothing that is inherent and absolute in our knowledge. It can never be purely objective, as knowledge is absorbed through the grid of our own perceptions, and that grid is in turn formed through our youthful socialization within our particular culture. For this reason, Marxist analysis does not allow gut feeling or individual bias to play too great a role in the debate. It is more important... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What possible reason could there be for this except to instill greater respect for police officers lives and fear into their would be assassins? One may argue that police officers are exposed to more dangerous situations than the average citizen, but no more so than your average criminal. It is because people perceive cops as good, as agents that preserve the social order, that their lives are accorded more respect. Of course, preserving the social order preserves the status quo of power, keeping those at the top in power and those at the bottom in deprivation. The police are thus representatives of the authorities at the top of the social hierarchy, and this is where they derive their power and respect. On the other hand, criminals are locked up in cages and exposed to an environment purposefully made horrendous. Though it may not have been the most entertaining book out there, it definitely had some good points in the storyline. The themes I noticed in the book were compassion and tyranny, along with the role that children can play. The protagonist in the book is Ender Wiggins, and the antagonist is Peter Wiggins. The personal meaning I took from this book is that it does not matter your age on what you can achieve. Ender is just a young boy who leads and saves the world. The book takes place in the future even though it was written in the 80 s. Ender is born into a family of highly intelligent people. As a child he is hated by his brother, Peter, along with other schoolmates and is protected by his sister, Valentine. He has to leave Valentine behind when he is taken away to Battle School, which is located on a ship very far away from earth so he can assist in the fight against the buggers. Ender shows off his extreme intelligence and is separated from the rest of the recruits by Colonel Graff of the International Fleet. Ender then becomes friends with a recruit name Alai. This aids Ender to make friends and fit in with people. Ender is noticed by the military commanders because of his dominance in the mind game . He is promoted to the Salamander Army shortly after. Is it true that some countries have banned smoking in public buildings already? Is it easy to guess how those bans turned out? The countries that banned smoking in public buildings are experiencing fewer health problems in their citizens and have had no negative economic effects due to the ban. Even though everyone should be able to do what they want, where they want if it is not hurting anyone, smokingshould be banned in public buildings because it causes health and environmental problems. The Might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can t neglect it. You can t cut it out, but you might be able to direct it, if you see what I mean, so that it was useful instead of bad. (241). The object s in an infant s world, especially during the first few months of life are essentially good or bad. Thus, if the child receives milk, the breast is good, if not, it is bad. Klein posits that the objects within one s world as an infantconsist of gratification and hostility. In addition to drives, infants are focused on the internal object, which is more of a fantasy than an object based in reality, as the infant struggles to know the difference at this point in life. These fantasies are representations of bodily instincts and urges that the infant can feel physically and mentally. Thus in the case of the bad breast , the infant is frustrated and feels discomfort due to not receiving the milk, and this is interpreted by the infant as if he or she was being attacked by a hostile force. Having a lot of information thrown at us constantly though can be challenging, I do not blame you! I agree with too that the humanities can help people to stay grounded in an ever changing informational world; I know it has for me. As attitudes toward cohabitation have become progressively acceptable, it has become increasingly prevalent in today s culture. (Gault Sherman Draper, 2012). As a result, there has been a decline in the number of couples that are choosing marriage. Research indicates the likelihood of divorce is increased when a couple lives together prior to marriage, increasing 166% if the wife had premarital sex and cohabited with another man before her husband. The Quantity Theory of Money is an economic theory that states that the level of money supply in an economy is directly proportional to the general price level. In conformity with Wright, R. E., Quadrini, V. (2009), he states that the modern quantity theory is superior to Keynes s liquidity preference theory because it is more complicated, specifying three types of assets (bonds, equities, goods) instead of just one (bonds). It also does not assume that the return on money is zero, or even a constant. In Friedman s theory, velocity is no longer a constant; rather, it is highly predictable and, as in reality and Keynes s formulation, pro cyclical, rising during expansions and falling during recessions Friedman, M. It brought the US out of a massive hole of poverty by creating jobs and creating regulations to help the economy stabilize. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 can be blamed for the start of the Great Depression, after millions went into panic when their investments fell through. After Woodrow Wilson failed to help the working class in a worsening economy, Americans looked for new hope in Franklin D. Roosevelt, elected in 1933, to help them come out of this terrible depression. He responded by creating numerous administrations and programs over the course of 5 years. These programs were designed to create unskilled labor and support the poor to help stimulate the economy again. His plan succeeded up to the second world war, where economy started to boom when a higher work force was needed. The first step Roosevelt took to create economic stability was to create jobs. Administrations such as the Public Works Administration created millions of jobs for the unemployed, including building many bridges, hospitals, schools, and more (New Deal Public Works Administration projects). The Civilian Conservation Corps also created unskilled labor such as planting trees and building state parks, which in turn helped the environment and conserve resources. Even though the people want to be dead, it is still representing the weeds that are pulled in the picture. The weeds must be puled so there is more room for the flowers, which is symbolic to the system that every time someone is born, someone must die. Another example of symbolism is the messy drop cloth. By animators adapting to this effective solution, American self employed animators, who want to begin their animation companies and studios, can come into collaboration with aspiring animators, employing teams of fellow animators. After watching Iron Jawed Angels, I realized how much I have taken for granted in my life and how incredibly grateful I am for all of the women that have fought for women equality including; Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. There are still on going debates in todays society about genderequality, but it s crazy to see how 100 plus years ago some of the rights women have now, going to school and voting, didn t exist. In 1912, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns fought together among other women for the right to vote. They fought for not only white women, but women of all races. Throughout Iron Jawed Angels the women fought hard, even during the time of war and while they were in jail, for their rights and equality. It wasn t until August 26, 1920 that women could vote. Before that women could not attend college or pursue training for most professions (Woods, 57). During the movie, Alice Paul was creating a friendship with a male who taught her how to drive which is interesting because in todays society almost every women knows how to drive or has the privilege to drive but back then only men drove or could even afford a car because they had the right to work. • 41. The Evolution Of Human Animals Humans, formally known as Homo sapiens, are some of the most fascinating creatures to inhabit this planet. We as human animals possess many traits unique to our species, but one of the most remarkable traits is our upright posture and inherent inclination to walk on two legs. We share this rare trait with few organisms, who even so only express limited bipedal behaviors. Humanancestors first initiated the transition to bipedalismapproximately 6 million years ago through the upright steps of the Sahelanthropus. However, Homo erectus was the first human ancestor to express full bipedality, which occurred only 1.9 million years ago. Some of the preceding forms of locomotion used by human ancestors included quadrupedalism or pronograde posture, suspensory locomotion, and knuckle walking (Watson, 2008). These forms of motion were used not only by human ancestors such as the Australopithecus afarensis, but can also be observed in modern times in some of our close relatives, apes and chimpanzees. This transition to bipedalism was facilitated by structural changes comprised of an angled thigh bone, a more sturdy and broad pelvis, a wider patella, an S shaped spine, and long femurs. The compilation of all of these adaptations allowed hominids to not only support their entire body weight while standing upright, but efficiently take long strides, therefore allowing them to travel greater distances. Up until Jackson s presidency, a veto was only used to stop a piece of legislation if the President viewed it as unconstitutional (Milkis and Nelson 137). This new interpretation of the veto gave the President the power to reject legislation on personal opinion alone. Although Congress was clearly disturbed with Jackson s veto, he maintained the people s faith and was reelected as president the same year (Milkis and Nelson 138 139). What I was most surprised by this week was Jackson s wording in much of the Indian Removal Act. There were a couple places that seemed to just fall short of inciting violence. Despite knowing the carnage that followed, I guess I expected the bill itself to be less odious. Jackson also announced his legal inability to protect Indians from state authorities if they chose not to volunteer their lands, clearly suggesting that any lingering natives in state territories were free to abuse (Brinkley and Dyer 94). Newton was the one to formulate the theory of universal gravity. It is claimed that, when he watched an apple fall from a tree he wondered if the force that caused that the apple to fall was also the force that kept the moon in its orbit. According to the text in Newton (1642), his theory that is described in Newton s law is that gravitational force depends on the mass of each object. His doubt wasn t about the fact that gravity existed, but whether it was what was keeping the moon in its orbit. He figured that, if the force was to be decreased he would be able to calculate the Moon s orbital period. He figured that this was the same force responsible for other motions in the orbit and with his hypothesis; he decided to call this theory universal gravitation. With many trials and errors he could not get his calculations to match his theories; he finally figured out his error, he had been using the wrong formula to figure out the diameter of the Earth.
