Hobbit Once
Mihaela Mihailova s article, You Were Not So Very Different from a Hobbit Once : Motion Capture as
an Estrangement Device in Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings Trilogy applies the Russian Formalists
concept of defamiliarization to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Mihailova argues that, according to
Russian Formalist Viktor Shklovsky, the point of art is to offer a different perspective on the piece of
art s subject; art takes something that is familiar and reimagines it in a way that is new and unfamiliar.
This article discusses how the human face and body is defamiliarized in the creation of the creature
Gollum by using motion capture to record the movements and expressions of actor Andy Serkis. His
body and face are then distorted and animated to create Gollum. The article successfully applies the
theory of Russian Formalism to the film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of these contribute to Gollum s otherness (Mihailova, 8). Mihailova spends about three pages
discussing how motion capture has defamiliarized the concept of acting, specifically as how it relates
to Serkis performance as Gollum. Not only is her argument here interesting and worthy of attention, it
also contributes to her overall argument and application of Formalism. Motion capture is a wonderful
defamiliarization tool, as she has illustrated in the article; this technology does lead the
defamiliarization of other things as well, such as acting. Mihailova reaches the conclusion that motion
capture as a defamiliarization device is a way to look inwards and explore what it is that makes us
human; at the same time, it also provides society with a way to analyze self representation. Her
conclusion is the end of a successful argument and application of Formalism. She picks out the themes
of the films and examines how defamiliarization communicates these

Making the Best Use of Pakistan s Natural Resources
INTRODUCTION
Pakistan is rich in natural resources. It has mountains , plains , deserts , fertile land , rivers and oceans.
Natural resources are very important to the development and prosperity of a country. The important
thing is to use them for the welfare of human beings and the development of the country economically
because the progress of a country depends entirely on the use of available resources. Significant
natural resources are described as follows :
1. Soil
Soil dry Pakistan belong to group having high carbonate and calcium poor in organic matter. These
vary in color from reddish brown in the north to the red or gray in the south. These soils are generally
fertile due to training. The barrage of new stores near the river called Khaddar and mostly consists of
sand . The old bar alluvial plateau, called Bangar , consists of finer particles loams . At the foot of the
mountains the soil is sandy and generally becomes thinner towards the plains where Khankah , the
concentration of limestone is occasionally . The soils of the deserts of Thal and Thar and Balochistan
are carried by the wind. In southern Potwar is a thin layer of residual floor coating .
2.Water
Water is a basic necessity of life . Human beings , animals and plants can not live without water. Water
is essential for maintaining the quality of life on earth . This finite commodity has a direct impact on
almost all sectors of the economy. In Pakistan its importance is more than ordinary

The Multitasking Generation an Article by Claudia Wallis
Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been
extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our
classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came
about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly
remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away
especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with
their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too. Though being exposed to
technologies like computers from an early age may have given us the ... Show more content on

With these technological distractions it has become more and more difficult to be successful in a
learning environment. It is certainly a near impossible task to learn a difficult lesson and also be
texting away on a cell phone or Facebook. These same devices that can enhance our learning can also
backfire and detract from it. The same technology that allows teachers some benefit, professors also
find a nuisance. The mobile phones that have basically become mobile computers are considered a
major distraction because of the silent ringers, e mails, and instant messages that interrupt us
constantly while we are in class. Distraction is not the only worry to the teachers in classrooms
worldwide; technology has also made cheating more easily. Stephanie Dunnewind states her point of
view in Internet Creates New Opportunities for Cheating, but Also Learning that More than three
quarters of public school students admitted to cheating on an exam in the past year, either by copying,
using crib notes or helping another student. Some students justify dishonesty as a fairness issue (113).
The problem with students multi tasking is that it takes awhile for our brains to get back into focus of
what we were doing prior to the intrusion. Intrusions during class result in the students finding trouble
with participating in the lesson getting their class work done. The technologies of the

Supply And Supply Of Beef
Short Answer/Essay (50 points total) 6. Pick a product and create your own Demand and Supply
Schedule. Draw the graph of your schedules to create a demand and supply curve. Illustrate where the
equilibrium point occurs. (10 points) The schedule below demonstrates the demand and supply for
beef in 2015. Quantity Demanded Quantity Supplied Price Result 155 235 $ 4.10 Surplus 175 215 $
3.90 Surplus 195 195 $ 3.70 Equilibrium 215 175 $ 3.50 Shortage 235 155 $ 3.30 Shortage $4.10
$3.90 $3.70 $3.50 $3.30 155 175 195 215 235 The equilibrium point occurs when supply and demand
are equal. In the graph above the equilibrium occurs at a price of $3.70 and a quantity of 195. 7. List
the 5 American Economic Goals. Pick three of the Goals and find at least two examples within the
current American Economy of how these goals are being achieved/unachieved. Be Specific with your
examples. (15 points) The American Economic Goals are economic freedom, economic growth, more
equitable distribution of income, economic security and price stability. Economic freedom gives
people the right of ownership, where anyone can possess whatever he want in the umbrella of law and
deal with his or her property as he or she pleases. For example, I was able to buy a car even though I
am not an American and I am just a student here. Furthermore, economic freedom gives people the

Protein Chromatography
Protein properties are directly affected by their environment, which depends on pH, temperature,
solvent effects, and pressure. With these affects has come more desire for better techniques in the
purification and separation processes. These processes hopefully will prevent loss of biological
activity and denaturation. With ion exchange chromatography comes many advantages over column
chromatography such as union between the target protein and functional groups at a very quick rate,
exponential growth without difficulty, short processing times, no heating, no extreme pH range, and a
multitude of other things (Santos et al. 2012). Ion exchange chromatography in short is ideal due to

The first included Cibacron Blue Sepharose CL 6B, proteins, and egg white lysozyme. They tested the
proteins and egg whites binding ability to the Cibacron Blue. To make matters easier, they only
searched for absorption of pure proteins from 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer, pH 7.2. This was achieved by
eluting the absorbed proteins with 1M KCl In in 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer. The second type included
immobilized monoclonal antibodies and the absorption of E. Coli B galactosidase against B
galactosidase. This was chosen due to the simplicity of measuring the activity of B galactosidase that
could then tell us the concentration of the antigen. The only downside to this approach was B
galactosidase has a much higher molecular weight that most antigens commonly used by this method.
This means the large molecule will have trouble penetrating the pores in the immuno absorbents. This
was done by immobilizing the antibodies on a silica based adsorbent, which was then added to PBS
buffer. The buffer contained antibodies. The flask they were in was then shaken for four hours,
followed by removal of all the unreacted protein that was done by using a funnel with sodium chloride
solution. To wash the gel they used propionic acid and then stored the adsorbent in PBS buffer. Finally
to elute the absorbed B galactosidase, they used 6 M urea in 20 mM Tris HCl, 10 mM ethylene
diamine tetraacetic acid, and 10 mM sodium Chloride, 0.1 M 2 mercaptoethanol, pH 7.2 (Chase

The Political Ideology Of Vietnam
It has been nearly five decades since the first President Ngo Dinh Diem, the founder of the Republic
of Vietnam was assassinated in a military coup. Vietnamese history on its media in general and its
education in particular are still unclear about the data, events related to this president who had the
logical policy line, great political ideology of the South Vietnam and his people at that time. The
remained images of Ngo Dinh Diem in new Vietnamese generations thoughts are just Ngo Dinh Diem
was regarded as a puppet of the United States, tied in a phrase meaning sarcastic and offended word,
U.S. Diem clique , and the Diem government is just a creation of the United States in order to serve
geo strategic purposes during the Cold War . However, those ambiguous images of the first president
of Vietnam are still questioning to its whole Nation because there s none logical evidence to offend his
existence.
I do not represent for any faction that condemns my country but I m standing in the truthful voices
buried over the years, especially the historical facts that took place under Ngo Dinh Diem s term. Why
all the words in the Vietnamese history books about him do not resemble what I m being told by my
family and people around me. There must be some mysterious things in this issue that is related to the
contrast between the state apparatus of the North Vietnam and the revolutionary way of the first
president of South Vietnam, which also clarifies the differences between

Japanese Creation Myths
All things have been created and have a beginning. The world being the largest creation in recorded
history. There are many different theories of how the world was created, many different cultures have
their own creation myth . These creation myths all have an obvious contrast between them, as well as
a large similarity that creates a large connection. The creation myths of the Japanese, Australian,
Christianity and Greek cultures all have their own individual understanding that makes a miraculous
story of how all things present this day came to be.

God creates only two humans (Adam and Eve) who are responsible for reproducing and their
offspring repeating the cycle. The Christianity myth is similar to the Japanese where there were two
deities who reproduced and their offspring breed on. In contrast to the Greek myths who had a variety
of gods who were believed to have made man out of clay and Athena breathed life into them. These
creation myths give an understanding that it is believed by people of different cultures that procreation

Henry Jenkin s Transmedia Storytelling
Riverdale is a television series that is based on the Archie comic books and can be considered an
example of transmedia storytelling according to Henry Jenkin s criteria in his article Transmedia
Storytelling 101. The series follows Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead,
characters from the Archie comic books, as the town of Riverdale is dealing with the aftermath of
Jason Blossom s death. Riverdale puts a mysterious and dark twist on the Archie comic books.
However, the characters and setting carryover from the comic books, which creates the argument that
Riverdale could be considered an example of transmedia storytelling. Riverdale is an example of

The show permits people who have never read the Archie comic books to enjoy it, but it still has
elements from the comic books that people will enjoy too. Henry Jenkin s in his blogpost Transmedia
Storytelling 101 states, Transmedia storytelling practices may expand the potential market for a
property by creating different points of entry for different audience segments (Jenkins). As seen in the
case of Riverdale, the market surrounding the Archie comic books is expanding from the comic books
to a television series based on the comic books. Riverdale appeals to a teen and young adult
demographic and this allows for people who may not have grown up with the Archie comics to
become familiar with the characters. It also provides a darker series of events than what was portrayed
in the Archie comics which may appeal to a different audience than the comics. Additionally, viewers
of the television series who have never read the comic books may start reading them because of their
interest in the television show. Accordingly, people who are fans of the comic books may be drawn to
Riverdale because it is based on the comic books. Therefore, this creates several entry points for
people to become involved in Riverdale and the Archie comic

Civil Growth, Ingenuity And Generosity
Civil Growth, Ingenuity and Generosity: United States 1940

Abstract
The United States of America was a boiling time in the 1940 s. With World War II approaching,
United States of America (USA) citizens went above and beyond to help out the cause. Doctor s and
student of universities unraveled mysteries and did what some would call impossible. It didn t matter
what color you were or who you loved, but if you were helping to aid the USA during war, you were
all right. Through tragedy, suffering and back breaking work, the United States of America pulled
themselves together as a whole, and made themselves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The USA needed more men for war and more people in the work force to cover jobs. Because of the
desperateness and proudness of citizens, not only did women benefit but also racial minorities,
homosexuals and the mentally ill benefited.
Women all around the USA were picking up their husbands wrenches and were going to work. They
had finally gotten the share of independence they longed for but, it wouldn t take long for women to
take another step towards ultimate civil freedom. In March of 1942, women were able to step out of
their dresses and jump into militant uniform. No longer did they need to become nurses to be in war,
but now they had the opportunity to become greater than men. Women took jobs as WASP s , WAVES
and WAC s . They trained male piolets, tested planes, free men of combat roles and worked as
volunteer emergency medics (Berkin, Miller, Cherny, Gormly, 2015). If women did not get jobs or
take lead, women may not have the same freedoms as of the 21st century.
If women could do it, minorities could do it too. African Americans, homosexual and the mentally ill
gained benefits from the war. African men now had complete ease going into the military and could
serve the country like any other citizen could. This was a huge step for the USA because not long
before, African Americans were extreamly segragated. This moment of allowance shows extream
cilvil growth withing the states.
Not only African Americans, but

Stop Poverty
Currently, our society is going through many issues but the biggest problem that needs to be stopped is
poverty. Poverty is easily the largest issue facing our world today. It kills thousands and thousands of
people every year. Not only are there adults but there are children out there starving and dying too. We
as a society have the power to end poverty right now but choose to spend that money towards other
mostly unnecessary things. One of the main reasons that so many people fall into poverty or stay in
poverty is because they are uneducated. Inequality affects everyone around the world but it is also a
huge cause of poverty. Inequality also makes it harder to find a way out of the hole that is poverty.
Lastly whether or not the child is born into poverty affects the rest of their life, if they can t find their
way out of poverty there whole life is set to not be as good as it should be and if they decide to have
kids they will be putting their children in the same situation.
121 million children are out of education and this needs to be changed now. One cannot expect a child
without the opportunity to learn to succeed in life. The amount of skill, education, experience, and
intelligence a child is sent out into the world with will determine where they end up. About a fifth or
22% of children growing up in poverty do not graduate. More than 1.3 billion people live on less than
two dollars a day while some people spend a hundred dollars like it s nothing. In some

How To Write A Research Paper In Apa Format
APA Citation Format is a set of formal rules written by the American Psychological Association for
documenting sources when writing research papers for any of the social science disciplines.
The most recent set of guidelines can be found in the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association released in July 2009. The purpose of the manual is to provide a
set of formal conventions that ensure clarity of communication, aid reader comprehension, avoid
plagiarism and build accurate reference citations.
The Basics
When writing a research paper, APA style requires that citations are located both in the text of the
body, as well as in a formal reference list section of the document. This article provides some general
guidelines on how in text citations should be formatted. For a more in depth explanation, consult
pages 169 179 of the Publication Manual. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When using APA format follow the author date method of in text citation. This means that the author s
last name and the year of publication for the source document should appear in the text like (Richards,
2001). A more complete citation should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
When writing your report, if you re just referring to an idea from another source, but not directly
quoting the material, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your in

Nature of South China Sea Disputes
The issues on South China Sea disputes are inherently complex and are compounded by conflicting
interpretations from the claimant states. In attempting to dissect this conundrum, Dutton (2011)
propounds a framework to explain the three facets to the disputes territorial sovereignty, jurisdiction
over sea zones, and control over military activities. The argument on territorial sovereignty premises
on the notion of complete state authority over part of, or all of the islands in the South China Sea, in
particular the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Common to both, China is the only state that has made
sovereignty claims over both clusters of islands. It is noted that since 1949, the Zhou Enlai
government has published maps with nine dashes forming a U shape line in the South China Sea
demarcating its maritime boundaries (Nguyen, 2012). In late 2012, China even published maps with
the U shape line in its new passports (Anderlini amp; Bland, 2012). Separately, Dillon (2011) posits
that Beijing s territorial assertion in the South China Sea stems from the historical tributary system
with its vassal kingdoms that span from Japan and Korea in the

How Did Atoms From The Universe End Up Being In Hubble s...
From Bang to Brain Lachlan Hall
Let s go back in time, about eighty years from now. A young astronomer named Edwin Hubble had
contributed to a theory that would explain the origins of the universe. He discovered that atoms were
in everything, including his brain. This article is to discover how exactly did atoms from the universe
end up being in Hubble s brain? So let s find out how we got From Bang to Brain .
Let s start with the Big Bang Theory . In 1927 the big bang theory was proposed by Georges Lemaitre.
But was significantly created by our old friend Edwin Hubble. Edwin Hubble lived from 1889 1953
and in this time he did great things such as contribute significantly to the creation of the big bang

Cosmic background radiation is radiation from the early development of the universe. After the big
bang the universe was smaller and much hotter than it is now and was filled with a fog of hydrogen
plasma. Eventually the universe started expanding and became cooler. As it cooled stable atoms
started forming, leaving only CMB remained so it is a strong evidence that the Big Bang Theory was
correct. Scientist thought if the big bang actually happened then there would have to be cosmic
background radiation left over, so all they had to do is find evidence of this and they did so this gave
the big bang theory evidence to support their claim.
Another way to support the Big Bang Theory is to look at the stars. According to the Big Bang Theory
the universe is forever changing and expanding and looking up at the stars just proves this. If you look
up at the stars we only see the stars that their light has reached us meaning these stars are only new, so
if we don t so some stars the light hasn t reached us yet. As we know light travels in light years which
takes well years, so if we can t see their light it hasn t reached us so it is light years away. This shows
us that it has grown and changed supporting the

The Birth of Air Defense During post Cold War Era Air Defense Artillery began the technological

air defense would engage and defeat the enemy in the future. Air Defense Artillery introduced the

was capable of destroying a vast majority of ballistic missiles, its specifications did not match up to

Case Study: A Problem With Inclusion

Problem Identification and Analysis
For this particular case, there are many issues which will cause problems for the school leader. All of
which will need to be addressed in order for this student to feel welcomed and to also feel that he is
getting the same educational opportunities as the other students in the building. This case presents
many challenges, however, for the building leader. There are three key issues which are the basis for
my resolution to the problem.
First, it has been clearly identified that some of the instructors in the building have had a history of not

Namely, an American Sign Interpreter will be required for this student. Further, the student will need
to feel accepted by his peers. This can be quite challenging for the building principal to facilitate, even
for a building full of regular education students. Also, the teachers will need to be accepting of having
this student in their classes, along with the interpreter.
Finally, this case presents a challenging issue with the parents of the child as well. It will be critical for
the parents to know that their child s needs will be met through the IEP and that the building leader is
in support of the IEP so that it is enforced. This is absolutely critical for the building leader because if
the IEP is not constructed properly and if the IEP is not being followed, then legal ramifications could
cause issues for me as the building leader.
At any rate, the problem for me in this case is found in the three areas mentioned previously. One is
the mindset of the teachers. Two is the mindset of the student. Three is the satisfaction of the parents.
While these issues do not solely rest on my shoulders, it is my leadership which will determine how
successful this inclusion will be for the student.
Plan of Action
The proposed plan of action to promote a resolution to this case is three fold. First I will remedy the
trouble with the instructors in my building by setting goals. It is apparent that many teachers are
reluctant to accept special education

Charlemagne And The Educational Contributions In The Dark...
Many had a bad viewpoint of the Dark ages, which is stated in the Cultures and Values book as: The
popular view of the Middle ages often referred to as the Dark Ages is that of a period of isolated and
ignorant people with little outside of their own immediate surroundings (P. 187). But through research
of the Dark ages I have come to realize that the time wasn t as bad as many people made it out to be.
There were many greats to make the Middle ages great; such as, Charlemagne. Also there were
numerous architectural works that were very beautiful and magnificent. Lastly there is evidence from
the epic poem Beowulf that tells a great story that was created in the Middle ages. In these times it
may have not been the most iconic for the area, but it definitely doesn t deserve the title of the Dark
ages. Charlemagne is seen as one of the greatest Roman Emperors throughout history and has
numerous accolades to show for it. But for this essay I am only going to speak about his work on the
educational advances during his reign as emperor. Stated by Cunningham and Reich, Charlemagne
opened his famous palace school at Aachen an institution that was a prime factor in initiating what has
been called the Carolingian Renaissance (p. 278). In his school he brought in numerous teachers and
scholars for several different reasons. Charlemagne wanted to make sure that the youth of the kingdom
were well educated, and his main reason for this was due to the fact that he himself could not

Amongst the three love poems examined in this essay, the theme of male or female power in
relationships pervades throughout. The views of the speakers are expressed and defined through
literary and poetic techniques. This gives the reader an insight into the speaker s problems and
dissatisfaction with a relationship, due to an imbalance of power. However there are dissimilarities
between the poems for example where in La Belle Dame Sans Merci the female displays supernatural
power and dominance over a knight, the Duke in My Last Duchess desires psychological power over

Also the Duke believes himself to be above the level of common people saying he would never stoop
down to their level. From this we can presume the Duke is afraid of losing his power, and would
rather hold his head up high and suffer for it rather than stoop . The use of this word indicates that the
Duke is in a state of mind where he sees himself as superior compared to others.
However as we read on we learn that the Duke had limited control over his wife. He states that She
had a heart…to soon made glad , showing that he felt she was amused easily and distracted away
from him perhaps by other men. This is amplified further when he says She liked whate er she looked
on , showing he believes she undermined his control over her and paid attention to other men . We can
infer from this that the Duke was disturbed about his deficit of restrain over his wife and is deeply
angered at how she thanked men other than himself.
The Duke is outraged at the lack of affection he receives from his Duchess, and provides the reader
with reasons as to why he deserves more. The Duke says She ranked my gift of a nine hundred years
old name with anybody s gift . Here the Duke explains that his supremacy, which he received from his
family name, has stretched over several centuries and his Duchess should therefore appreciate him for
it. His contenders have a lot less to offer but still

Gastric Ulcer And Duodenal Ulcers
Chapter 16
Peptic Ulcer (Gastric Ulcer/Duodenal Ulcer)
Both gastric (stomach) and duodenal ulcers are called peptic ulcers. Peptic ulcers affect 10% of the
world s population and men and women both equally. Duodenal ulcer incidence peaks in clients in
their fifties and sixties and gastric ulcers in those between ages 60 and 80. This is known as a disease
due to Hurry, Worry and Curry. Smoking, consuming alcohol in large amounts, use of some drugs like
NSAIDS for a long duration are causative factors of ulcers.
Peptic ulcer is a chronic ulcer formed in regions of the gastrointestinal tract where gastric juice comes
into direct contact with the mucous membrane. Such ulcer usually occurs in the first part of the
duodenum and in the stomach. They sometimes occur in the lower oesophagus; in the jejunum after
gastro enterostomy or partial gastrectomy; and rarely, adjacent to aberrant gastric mucosa in a Meckel
s diverticulum. The term peptic ulcer is used to describe any localised erosion of the mucosal lining of
those portions of the alimentary tract that come in contact with gastric juice. This integration of tissues
can also result in necrosis. The defence mechanism of gastric and duodenal mucosa is incredibly
efficient. The normal mechanical, thermal or chemical insult from food is well within its power to deal
with. No single factor has been identified in the causation of chronic peptic ulcer. A combination of
factors leads to ulceration. Most ulcers are found in the

Jason Medea
How do Jason s feelings at the end of the play differ from those revealed in other encounters?
In their first encounter, Jason appears to be trying to make himself feel as if he is better than Medea,
and as if he is the bigger person than she, You no doubt hate me: but I could never bear ill will to you
implies that he is a better person for helping her even though she hates him and that even after all that
s happened and all she has said he still could never bear ill will . He continues to try and defend his
actions, claiming it was for social status, that he didn t marry for love, but for the fact that he wants to

Later in this passage, he also refers to Medea as a foolish woman when she tries to send the Coronet

all she will yield to me more than to costly presents, I am sure of that ; again, the attitude of the
ancient Greek time was that women were to do what they were told, rather than what they wanted.
They were to be obedient, and not break any rules.
In the third and final encounter, at the end of the play, it appears Jason has reached his peripeteia, his
downfall. Medea, at this point, has killed their two sons and it is clear he loses complete control of his
emotions, and he begins wildly insulting Medea, calling her an abomination . It is also earlier in this
part that he calls her the woman I will kill. at the beginning of the play, he was supposedly in love
with her, whilst at the end, he wants nothing more than her to be dead. It becomes obvious that Jason
has realised what Medea is truly like, how manipulative and cunning she is; and how she tricked him,
in certain parts, at least, into believing she was just an obedient wife to him. He claims

Denis Diderot s Expansion Of The Encyclopedie
Denis Diderot, the author of the Encyclopedie, once stated, There are three principal means of
acquiring knowledge... observation of nature, reflection, and experimentation. Observation collects
facts; reflection combines them; experimentation verifies the result of that combination. By taking on
the the massive project of the Encyclopédie, he reflected on the tons of facts during his time and
bound them together so that others could reflect and experiment. Today we use an expansion of the
Encyclopédie called Wikipedia. Wikipedia, the first response to most people s curiosity, is a digital

his wife Em. Dorothy and her family lived in a very petite, four walled house in the core of the Kansas

Whenever Dorothy set foot outside the house, all she would notice is how gray and dull everything

Native American And The American Of Native Americans
The Native American population has suffered many tragedies at the hands of the United States
government, from their first interactions through the mid twentieth century. Government policies
concerning American Indians worked in conjunction with the prejudices harbored by the majority of
the white population in the United States to suppress Native American liberties and strip them of their
cultural identity. These policies gave little to no regard for Native American customs, personal
expression, or the future of Native American traditions, and had profound effects on the Native
American individuals and families who encountered them. The boarding school policies enacted by
the United States government regarding Native Americans that were formulated to encourage the
destruction of native customs and force an entire race to assimilate into white American culture
ultimately led to the alienation of Native Americans from their native heritage and a loss of their
personal sense of self. Several government policies were created to control the attire and language of
Native Americans. Among these were targeted regulations regarding how Native American students in
boarding schools were to dress, act, and speak, oftentimes against their will or traditions. It was
common for students to be prohibited from speaking their native language, encouraged instead to read,
write, and speak in English only. One of the General Rules in Rules for Indian Schools explicitly
states that all

Self Reflexive Aspects of Singing in the Rain Essay
Singin in the Rain (MGM, 1952) is an American musical comedy directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley
Donen. The film comically emulates the transition from the production of silent movies to talkies in
Hollywood during the 1920s. The narrative follows a successful silent film star named Don Lockwood
(Gene Kelly) and his glamorous blonde on screen partner Lina Lamont as they attempt to adapt The
Duelling Cavalier a silent film, into a talking film. However, the shrill sound of Lamont s voice cast
serious doubt of the potential success of the film. Lockwood s musically talented sidekick Cosmo
Brown (Donald O conner) suggests that the film be turned into a musical, and recommends Lockwood
s love interest Kathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds) perform ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the conclusion of the musical number Cosmo flips off the illusionary backdrop of a hallway. This
example demonstrates how the text reflects its own making and works to demystify the illusions of
Hollywood. The back stage pass that is granted to audience uncovers the modes of Hollywood
production and replaces it with musical performances.
Throughout Singin in the Rain self referential techniques are employed to signal to the audience that
the film is a metafictional text. The text consciously advises the audience that what they are watching
is not real, consequently disrupting the illusion of the fourth wall. Ingersoll (1999, p.385) describes
metafiction as a fictional text that draws attention to itself as a text in a variety of ways . An example
of this can be identified during the opening scene when Don Lockwood explains his rise to fame story.
The character looks directly into the camera as he speaks, breaking the illusion of the fourth wall and
acknowledging the audiences existence. This technique is markedly different from the established
convention of the audience eaves dropping on characters that ordinarily function within a three walled
environment (Auter amp; Davis 1991, p.165). Singin in the Rain acknowledges the audience and itself
as a work of fiction self referentially, as a result the audience are no longer voyeuristically watching,
they are being spoken to.
The term genre is used within film studies to refer to

Emily and her two friends caught up with our group at the balcony. They started climbing on things

the narrator: ...the blue sky powdered with gold and great spots of light like white wine splashed over

and represent Mansfield s continuous use of French throughout the story, which alludes to the location

The Macroeconomic performance indicator analyzed in the report includes GDP growth, inflation,
unemployment and Fiscal and monetary budget balances.
The Netherlands is the 6th largest economy in the Euro Area and it is a crucial transportation hub in
Europe. The Netherlands economy depends on foreign trade heavily both exports and imports alike.
Its exports account for 83 percent of the GDP and its imports for 72 percent. The GDP Country Rank
of the Dutch is 25/193(2014).
The weightage of each component of the GDP is as follows: a) Household consumption (45 percent),
b) Government expense (26 percent) c) Gross fixed capital formation (18 percent), d) Net trade (11
percent)
By observation of the last 2 decades, Netherlands has an averaged GDP growth of 0.53% between
1988 and 2015, all time high: 1.80% (Q1 1999) and all time low: 3.30% (Q1 2009).
This year, the Dutch economy has progressed by only 0.1 percent on quarter in the three months to
September 2015. It has underperformed and fallen short of the market expectations by 0.3% growth.
Investment has slowed down and consumption has reached a stagnation(flat) with only government
expenditure acting as the key growth factor after showing zero growth in the last quarter.Imports have
risen at a pace of 1.1% whereas exports only by 0.7%, thus, the net demand for external sources has

The Phenomenal Opportunity For The Game Grand Theft Auto Five
By the time my sophomore year of high school came to an end, my digital creations reached over 30
million people. Interestingly, the marvelous opportunity to connect with the world began with one of
the most defective and frustrating laptops ever created. But despite the poor quality of my laptop, it
helped me develop a profitable business, which has in turn promoted my personal growth, encouraged
me to sieze valuable opportunities, allowed me to develop skills that will serve me well in college, and
advanced my ability to effectively communicate.
My business ventures began early one Saturday morning, when I did not have much to do. Instead of
simply surfing the Internet, I decided to contribute to it by creating YouTube tutorials for popular
video games. At first, I did not take this short lived hobby seriously. But this newfound pastime
quickly turned into a profitable business, featuring continual growth and resulting in a substantial
income. For instance, I recognized a trend curve in popularity for the game Grand Theft Auto Five and
decided to make videos, showing people the most effective ways to rank up, and earn in game
currency. My tutorials were a hit, so I studied the game more and discovered a pattern in which of my
videos received the most positive feedback, allowing me to optimize my ranking on the search results
and generate more revenue. In addition to supporting my growing business, my independent work
ethic translated into a self made education that

Scared Straight Program Essay
Crime and violence is a huge issue nationwide. Various strategies and programs have been
implemented to help reduce such from occurring. Nearly half of crimes in the United States are
committed by youth 10 to 17 years old. Juvenile crime increases each year at a rate double of adult
crime. One way to help deter juvenile crime was the creation of the Scared Straight Program .
Programs like Scared Straight consist of organized visits to prison facilities by juvenile delinquents or
juveniles at risk of becoming delinquent or showing such behavior. During contact with the juveniles
the adult inmates describe their experiences of cruel, harsh, and unpleasant conditions connected with

Seventeen juvenile offenders were followed by camera as they experienced prison life for two hours.
During the duration of the show it was reported that about 8,000 juveniles had visited the prison and
that 80% of them were reformed by the experience (Feinstein, 2005, Pg. 41). Despite this involvement
of juveniles with inmates, researchers found no difference between those actually participating in the
Scared Straight program and those not participating. Since then the authors of Scared Straight and
other juvenile awareness programs for preventing juvenile delinquency did a 2002 meta analysis of
relevant research on nine such programs. It was concluded that not only does the program fail to deter
crime, but it actually leads to more offending behavior. Recidivism rates were found to be higher for
those exposed to Scared Straight programs than those not in the program. Other studies have also
demonstrated that the program is ineffective in preventing delinquent behavior, and that there is
evidence that participation in such program may actually contribute toward increased delinquency
behavior. Scared Straight Programs also violate the sight and sound separation requirement of the
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 2002. A guideline provided by the Office of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention states that the state must assure that no juvenile offender

Next, successful companies must recognize and respond to the major forces affecting our macro
environment, for example; stock market decline, increase in unemployment and global warming.
Companies must now consider several external environmental forces while running their business, in
particular, demographics, economics, social, natural, technological and political.

Demographics can consist of population size, density, location, age, sex, race and occupation. In this
analysis, we will focus on examining population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The perception seems to be that Americans are being more frugal because of the economy and saving
more as a precaution. Competition has made the price of beer to a consumer rather negligible;
Anheuser Busch and MillerCoors have the ability to raise the price of beer because of their large
followings. Another factor that could affect the price of beer is global warming, which you will read
about later. Essential to our economy s growth is the growth of small businesses such as craft
breweries. The upcoming national election is approaching and the company Paychex has identified
five important issues facing small businesses today, taxes, regulatory burden, employment regulations,
immigration and retirement security (MarketWatch). Succession is important for small businesses and

Sammy s Characters In A P By John Updike
Morals are standards or beliefs that most people use for guidance in their lives and turn to when
making decisions. A person s character is composed of their set morals, so the actions many people
take are dictated by what they believe in. In the short story A P by John Updike, main character
Sammy finds himself in a situation where his authority figure took action against three teenage girls in
a way that Sammy did not believe to be right. This position was especially difficult for Sammy to be
in, due to wanting to express his own beliefs while also knowing he is not in a place of command to
request a change from his boss. While reading A P I was able to relate to Sammy on a personal level,
as I have been in a similar circumstance and felt my boss acted in ways that went against my beliefs.
Sammy and I have both exhibited impulsive acts of defiance towards higher authority figures, due to
circumstances in which we felt our integrity was being compromised in our place of work.
Sammy s strong feelings towards three girls in his store, whom he did not previously know, led him to
make a choice that affected both him and his family. Sammy believed his boss, Lengel, was in the
wrong to state the store policy of, dressing decently (378), to the three girls wearing bathing suits.
Lengel also said how the store, isn t the beach , so the girls should have their, shoulders covered (378).

An Organization s Mission Through Optimal Performance Of...
Enterprise Architecture is a relatively new field which has, in recent years, firmly implanted itself as
an increasingly integral facet within information technology (IT) companies. It is meant to provide
structure to the company s IT department through strategic organization of the department s assets.
More specifically, the concept is meant to manage an enterprise s IT resources in an effort to
streamline and organize the laborious process associated with large scale IT projects and the chaotic
environment they foment (Harrell, 2011, p. xii). This is done through a streamlining process that
establishes the organization wide roadmap to achieve an organization s mission through optimal
performance of its core business processes within an efficient [IT] environment (Schekkermann, 2006,
p. i). The practice effectively builds a schematic for the company and its procedures as it strives to
fulfill its operational endeavors.
The name is derived by pulling from the various fields of conventional architecture, but also software
engineering, software architecture, and systems engineering (Harrell, 2011, p. xii). Enterprise
Architecture has been present for a number of decades and has struggled to define itself as a crucial
aspect of IT management. Mixed results have hampered this cause as Harrell notes that success rate
does not appear to be appreciably higher than it was before enterprise architecture was widely
employed (Harrell, 2011, p. xii). Some argue that this is due

VI Adaptive Maintenance
Adaptive maintenance is the process of creating flexible enhancements for a given piece of software.
The addition of such features can be alluring to potential customers in that it could potentially offer
something unique, or it could simplify a computerized process by executing new ideas or making use
of new technologies. The process of enhancing current software however, can be a bit difficult as
changes would have to be able to integrate almost seamlessly to the overall structure of the existing
program. In some cases the process is further complicated by the fact that existing code may need to
be carefully modified in order to be able to make the intended modifications.
Occasionally desired changes cannot fit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Programs that are well maintained and refined are also cheaper to maintain due to having a better
overall layout as well as better documentation. Programmers performing regular maintenance on such
systems are able to be more efficient and can potentially spot any errors more easily. In some cases, a
complete overhaul is necessary in order to improve the quality of a program. No system is truly
perfect, however perfective maintenance can forestall the rate at which complications arise. One
disadvantage is that a massive restructuring of assembly language could have a negative impact on the
portability of the software itself. Typically systems that would be most likely to invest in perfective
maintenance are those which serve an essential purpose in everyday life. One example would be a
banking system in order to protect their software and avoid massive defects that could significantly
impact their regular business operations.
VIII Reengineering Source Code Sometimes coding is so badly written that it may as well be a foreign
language with non descriptive variable names and few if any comments. Such code may be easily
understood by the original programmer, however it can be difficult to read for anyone else. In such a
scenario it would be beneficial to reengineer the code so that it s more readable and easily understood
by most anyone who needs to work with it. Restructuring

  • 2. Hobbit Once Mihaela Mihailova s article, You Were Not So Very Different from a Hobbit Once : Motion Capture as an Estrangement Device in Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings Trilogy applies the Russian Formalists concept of defamiliarization to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Mihailova argues that, according to Russian Formalist Viktor Shklovsky, the point of art is to offer a different perspective on the piece of art s subject; art takes something that is familiar and reimagines it in a way that is new and unfamiliar. This article discusses how the human face and body is defamiliarized in the creation of the creature Gollum by using motion capture to record the movements and expressions of actor Andy Serkis. His body and face are then distorted and animated to create Gollum. The article successfully applies the theory of Russian Formalism to the film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of these contribute to Gollum s otherness (Mihailova, 8). Mihailova spends about three pages discussing how motion capture has defamiliarized the concept of acting, specifically as how it relates to Serkis performance as Gollum. Not only is her argument here interesting and worthy of attention, it also contributes to her overall argument and application of Formalism. Motion capture is a wonderful defamiliarization tool, as she has illustrated in the article; this technology does lead the defamiliarization of other things as well, such as acting. Mihailova reaches the conclusion that motion capture as a defamiliarization device is a way to look inwards and explore what it is that makes us human; at the same time, it also provides society with a way to analyze self representation. Her conclusion is the end of a successful argument and application of Formalism. She picks out the themes of the films and examines how defamiliarization communicates these ... • 4. The Multitasking Generation an Article by Claudia Wallis Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too. Though being exposed to technologies like computers from an early age may have given us the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With these technological distractions it has become more and more difficult to be successful in a learning environment. It is certainly a near impossible task to learn a difficult lesson and also be texting away on a cell phone or Facebook. These same devices that can enhance our learning can also backfire and detract from it. The same technology that allows teachers some benefit, professors also find a nuisance. The mobile phones that have basically become mobile computers are considered a major distraction because of the silent ringers, e mails, and instant messages that interrupt us constantly while we are in class. Distraction is not the only worry to the teachers in classrooms worldwide; technology has also made cheating more easily. Stephanie Dunnewind states her point of view in Internet Creates New Opportunities for Cheating, but Also Learning that More than three quarters of public school students admitted to cheating on an exam in the past year, either by copying, using crib notes or helping another student. Some students justify dishonesty as a fairness issue (113). The problem with students multi tasking is that it takes awhile for our brains to get back into focus of what we were doing prior to the intrusion. Intrusions during class result in the students finding trouble with participating in the lesson getting their class work done. The technologies of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Protein Chromatography Protein properties are directly affected by their environment, which depends on pH, temperature, solvent effects, and pressure. With these affects has come more desire for better techniques in the purification and separation processes. These processes hopefully will prevent loss of biological activity and denaturation. With ion exchange chromatography comes many advantages over column chromatography such as union between the target protein and functional groups at a very quick rate, exponential growth without difficulty, short processing times, no heating, no extreme pH range, and a multitude of other things (Santos et al. 2012). Ion exchange chromatography in short is ideal due to the low cost, longevity through harsh cleanings, and high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first included Cibacron Blue Sepharose CL 6B, proteins, and egg white lysozyme. They tested the proteins and egg whites binding ability to the Cibacron Blue. To make matters easier, they only searched for absorption of pure proteins from 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer, pH 7.2. This was achieved by eluting the absorbed proteins with 1M KCl In in 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer. The second type included immobilized monoclonal antibodies and the absorption of E. Coli B galactosidase against B galactosidase. This was chosen due to the simplicity of measuring the activity of B galactosidase that could then tell us the concentration of the antigen. The only downside to this approach was B galactosidase has a much higher molecular weight that most antigens commonly used by this method. This means the large molecule will have trouble penetrating the pores in the immuno absorbents. This was done by immobilizing the antibodies on a silica based adsorbent, which was then added to PBS buffer. The buffer contained antibodies. The flask they were in was then shaken for four hours, followed by removal of all the unreacted protein that was done by using a funnel with sodium chloride solution. To wash the gel they used propionic acid and then stored the adsorbent in PBS buffer. Finally to elute the absorbed B galactosidase, they used 6 M urea in 20 mM Tris HCl, 10 mM ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, and 10 mM sodium Chloride, 0.1 M 2 mercaptoethanol, pH 7.2 (Chase ... Vietnamese history on its media in general and its education in particular are still unclear about the data, events related to this president who had the logical policy line, great political ideology of the South Vietnam and his people at that time. The remained images of Ngo Dinh Diem in new Vietnamese generations thoughts are just Ngo Dinh Diem was regarded as a puppet of the United States, tied in a phrase meaning sarcastic and offended word, U.S. Diem clique , and the Diem government is just a creation of the United States in order to serve geo strategic purposes during the Cold War . However, those ambiguous images of the first president of Vietnam are still questioning to its whole Nation because there s none logical evidence to offend his existence. I do not represent for any faction that condemns my country but I m standing in the truthful voices buried over the years, especially the historical facts that took place under Ngo Dinh Diem s term. Why all the words in the Vietnamese history books about him do not resemble what I m being told by my family and people around me. The creation myths of the Japanese, Australian, Christianity and Greek cultures all have their own individual understanding that makes a miraculous story of how all things present this day came to be. Henry Jenkin s Transmedia Storytelling Riverdale is a television series that is based on the Archie comic books and can be considered an example of transmedia storytelling according to Henry Jenkin s criteria in his article Transmedia Storytelling 101. The series follows Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead, characters from the Archie comic books, as the town of Riverdale is dealing with the aftermath of Jason Blossom s death. Riverdale puts a mysterious and dark twist on the Archie comic books. However, the characters and setting carryover from the comic books, which creates the argument that Riverdale could be considered an example of transmedia storytelling. The show permits people who have never read the Archie comic books to enjoy it, but it still has elements from the comic books that people will enjoy too. Henry Jenkin s in his blogpost Transmedia Storytelling 101 states, Transmedia storytelling practices may expand the potential market for a property by creating different points of entry for different audience segments (Jenkins). As seen in the case of Riverdale, the market surrounding the Archie comic books is expanding from the comic books to a television series based on the comic books. Riverdale appeals to a teen and young adult demographic and this allows for people who may not have grown up with the Archie comics to become familiar with the characters. It also provides a darker series of events than what was portrayed in the Archie comics which may appeal to a different audience than the comics. Additionally, viewers of the television series who have never read the comic books may start reading them because of their interest in the television show. Accordingly, people who are fans of the comic books may be drawn to Riverdale because it is based on the comic books. Therefore, this creates several entry points for people to become involved in Riverdale and the Archie comic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Civil Growth, Ingenuity And Generosity Civil Growth, Ingenuity and Generosity: United States 1940 Emily M. Mascari Southern New Hampshire University Author Note This paper was prepared for Sophomore Seminar, taught by Professor Kramer. Abstract The United States of America was a boiling time in the 1940 s. With World War II approaching, United States of America (USA) citizens went above and beyond to help out the cause. Doctor s and student of universities unraveled mysteries and did what some would call impossible. It didn t matter what color you were or who you loved, but if you were helping to aid the USA during war, you were all right. Through tragedy, suffering and back breaking work, the United States of America pulled themselves together as a whole, and made themselves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The USA needed more men for war and more people in the work force to cover jobs. Because of the desperateness and proudness of citizens, not only did women benefit but also racial minorities, homosexuals and the mentally ill benefited. Women all around the USA were picking up their husbands wrenches and were going to work. They had finally gotten the share of independence they longed for but, it wouldn t take long for women to take another step towards ultimate civil freedom. In March of 1942, women were able to step out of their dresses and jump into militant uniform. No longer did they need to become nurses to be in war, but now they had the opportunity to become greater than men. Women took jobs as WASP s , WAVES and WAC s . They trained male piolets, tested planes, free men of combat roles and worked as volunteer emergency medics (Berkin, Miller, Cherny, Gormly, 2015). If women did not get jobs or take lead, women may not have the same freedoms as of the 21st century. If women could do it, minorities could do it too. African Americans, homosexual and the mentally ill gained benefits from the war. African men now had complete ease going into the military and could serve the country like any other citizen could. This was a huge step for the USA because not long before, African Americans were extreamly segragated. This moment of allowance shows extream cilvil growth withing the states. • 12. Stop Poverty Currently, our society is going through many issues but the biggest problem that needs to be stopped is poverty. Poverty is easily the largest issue facing our world today. It kills thousands and thousands of people every year. Not only are there adults but there are children out there starving and dying too. We as a society have the power to end poverty right now but choose to spend that money towards other mostly unnecessary things. One of the main reasons that so many people fall into poverty or stay in poverty is because they are uneducated. Inequality affects everyone around the world but it is also a huge cause of poverty. Inequality also makes it harder to find a way out of the hole that is poverty. Lastly whether or not the child is born into poverty affects the rest of their life, if they can t find their way out of poverty there whole life is set to not be as good as it should be and if they decide to have kids they will be putting their children in the same situation. 121 million children are out of education and this needs to be changed now. One cannot expect a child without the opportunity to learn to succeed in life. The amount of skill, education, experience, and intelligence a child is sent out into the world with will determine where they end up. About a fifth or 22% of children growing up in poverty do not graduate. More than 1.3 billion people live on less than two dollars a day while some people spend a hundred dollars like it s nothing. This article is to discover how exactly did atoms from the universe end up being in Hubble s brain? So let s find out how we got From Bang to Brain . Let s start with the Big Bang Theory . In 1927 the big bang theory was proposed by Georges Lemaitre. But was significantly created by our old friend Edwin Hubble. After the big bang the universe was smaller and much hotter than it is now and was filled with a fog of hydrogen plasma. Eventually the universe started expanding and became cooler. Scientist thought if the big bang actually happened then there would have to be cosmic background radiation left over, so all they had to do is find evidence of this and they did so this gave the big bang theory evidence to support their claim. Another way to support the Big Bang Theory is to look at the stars. According to the Big Bang Theory the universe is forever changing and expanding and looking up at the stars just proves this. If you look up at the stars we only see the stars that their light has reached us meaning these stars are only new, so if we don t so some stars the light hasn t reached us yet. • 26. Native American And The American Of Native Americans The Native American population has suffered many tragedies at the hands of the United States government, from their first interactions through the mid twentieth century. Government policies concerning American Indians worked in conjunction with the prejudices harbored by the majority of the white population in the United States to suppress Native American liberties and strip them of their cultural identity. These policies gave little to no regard for Native American customs, personal expression, or the future of Native American traditions, and had profound effects on the Native American individuals and families who encountered them. The boarding school policies enacted by the United States government regarding Native Americans that were formulated to encourage the destruction of native customs and force an entire race to assimilate into white American culture ultimately led to the alienation of Native Americans from their native heritage and a loss of their personal sense of self. Several government policies were created to control the attire and language of Native Americans. Among these were targeted regulations regarding how Native American students in boarding schools were to dress, act, and speak, oftentimes against their will or traditions. It was common for students to be prohibited from speaking their native language, encouraged instead to read, write, and speak in English only. Throughout Singin in the Rain self referential techniques are employed to signal to the audience that the film is a metafictional text. The text consciously advises the audience that what they are watching is not real, consequently disrupting the illusion of the fourth wall. Ingersoll (1999, p.385) describes metafiction as a fictional text that draws attention to itself as a text in a variety of ways . An example of this can be identified during the opening scene when Don Lockwood explains his rise to fame story. The character looks directly into the camera as he speaks, breaking the illusion of the fourth wall and acknowledging the audiences existence. This technique is markedly different from the established convention of the audience eaves dropping on characters that ordinarily function within a three walled environment (Auter amp; Davis 1991, p.165). • 32. The Phenomenal Opportunity For The Game Grand Theft Auto Five By the time my sophomore year of high school came to an end, my digital creations reached over 30 million people. Interestingly, the marvelous opportunity to connect with the world began with one of the most defective and frustrating laptops ever created. But despite the poor quality of my laptop, it helped me develop a profitable business, which has in turn promoted my personal growth, encouraged me to sieze valuable opportunities, allowed me to develop skills that will serve me well in college, and advanced my ability to effectively communicate. My business ventures began early one Saturday morning, when I did not have much to do. Instead of simply surfing the Internet, I decided to contribute to it by creating YouTube tutorials for popular video games. At first, I did not take this short lived hobby seriously. But this newfound pastime quickly turned into a profitable business, featuring continual growth and resulting in a substantial income. For instance, I recognized a trend curve in popularity for the game Grand Theft Auto Five and decided to make videos, showing people the most effective ways to rank up, and earn in game currency. My tutorials were a hit, so I studied the game more and discovered a pattern in which of my videos received the most positive feedback, allowing me to optimize my ranking on the search results and generate more revenue. In addition to supporting my growing business, my independent work ethic translated into a self made education that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Scared Straight Program Essay Crime and violence is a huge issue nationwide. Various strategies and programs have been implemented to help reduce such from occurring. Nearly half of crimes in the United States are committed by youth 10 to 17 years old. Juvenile crime increases each year at a rate double of adult crime. One way to help deter juvenile crime was the creation of the Scared Straight Program . Programs like Scared Straight consist of organized visits to prison facilities by juvenile delinquents or juveniles at risk of becoming delinquent or showing such behavior. During contact with the juveniles the adult inmates describe their experiences of cruel, harsh, and unpleasant conditions connected with jail or prison incarceration. The expected outcome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Seventeen juvenile offenders were followed by camera as they experienced prison life for two hours. During the duration of the show it was reported that about 8,000 juveniles had visited the prison and that 80% of them were reformed by the experience (Feinstein, 2005, Pg. 41). Despite this involvement of juveniles with inmates, researchers found no difference between those actually participating in the Scared Straight program and those not participating. Since then the authors of Scared Straight and other juvenile awareness programs for preventing juvenile delinquency did a 2002 meta analysis of relevant research on nine such programs. It was concluded that not only does the program fail to deter crime, but it actually leads to more offending behavior. Recidivism rates were found to be higher for those exposed to Scared Straight programs than those not in the program. Other studies have also demonstrated that the program is ineffective in preventing delinquent behavior, and that there is evidence that participation in such program may actually contribute toward increased delinquency behavior. Scared Straight Programs also violate the sight and sound separation requirement of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 2002. A guideline provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention states that the state must assure that no juvenile offender shall enter under public ... • 34. External Analysis Samuel Adams Essay examples External Environment Analysis Previously, you read about the industry analysis of the beer, wine and liquor industry and the five forces that affect a firm s ability to serve consumers and turn a profit. Next, successful companies must recognize and respond to the major forces affecting our macro environment, for example; stock market decline, increase in unemployment and global warming. Companies must now consider several external environmental forces while running their business, in particular, demographics, economics, social, natural, technological and political. Demographics Demographics can consist of population size, density, location, age, sex, race and occupation. In this analysis, we will focus on examining population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The perception seems to be that Americans are being more frugal because of the economy and saving more as a precaution. Competition has made the price of beer to a consumer rather negligible; Anheuser Busch and MillerCoors have the ability to raise the price of beer because of their large followings. Another factor that could affect the price of beer is global warming, which you will read about later. Essential to our economy s growth is the growth of small businesses such as craft breweries. The upcoming national election is approaching and the company Paychex has identified five important issues facing small businesses today, taxes, regulatory burden, employment regulations, immigration and retirement security (MarketWatch). Succession is important for small businesses and breweries as they look to expand or distribute to even more states. The Boston Beer company has a Brewing the American Dream program that helps provide loans, coaching and mentoring to small business owners in need of help in sustaining their business. Sociocultural Environment Our sociocultural environment is the next external environmental force that looks at trends, values, preferences, behaviors and beliefs. Today consumers have the ability for mass customization, choosing among a menu of attributes to find the best price, delivery options and features for a product or service. Specifically for the beer industry, this could be whether to purchase cans or bottles or a variety ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Sammy s Characters In A P By John Updike Morals are standards or beliefs that most people use for guidance in their lives and turn to when making decisions. A person s character is composed of their set morals, so the actions many people take are dictated by what they believe in. In the short story A P by John Updike, main character Sammy finds himself in a situation where his authority figure took action against three teenage girls in a way that Sammy did not believe to be right. This position was especially difficult for Sammy to be in, due to wanting to express his own beliefs while also knowing he is not in a place of command to request a change from his boss. While reading A P I was able to relate to Sammy on a personal level, as I have been in a similar circumstance and felt my boss acted in ways that went against my beliefs. Sammy and I have both exhibited impulsive acts of defiance towards higher authority figures, due to circumstances in which we felt our integrity was being compromised in our place of work. Sammy s strong feelings towards three girls in his store, whom he did not previously know, led him to make a choice that affected both him and his family. Sammy believed his boss, Lengel, was in the wrong to state the store policy of, dressing decently (378), to the three girls wearing bathing suits. Lengel also said how the store, isn t the beach , so the girls should have their, shoulders covered (378). Sammy felt that Lengel was rude while talking to the girls and stated that Lengel, ... • 36. An Organization s Mission Through Optimal Performance Of... Enterprise Architecture is a relatively new field which has, in recent years, firmly implanted itself as an increasingly integral facet within information technology (IT) companies. It is meant to provide structure to the company s IT department through strategic organization of the department s assets. More specifically, the concept is meant to manage an enterprise s IT resources in an effort to streamline and organize the laborious process associated with large scale IT projects and the chaotic environment they foment (Harrell, 2011, p. xii). This is done through a streamlining process that establishes the organization wide roadmap to achieve an organization s mission through optimal performance of its core business processes within an efficient [IT] environment (Schekkermann, 2006, p. i). The practice effectively builds a schematic for the company and its procedures as it strives to fulfill its operational endeavors. The name is derived by pulling from the various fields of conventional architecture, but also software engineering, software architecture, and systems engineering (Harrell, 2011, p. xii). Enterprise Architecture has been present for a number of decades and has struggled to define itself as a crucial aspect of IT management. Mixed results have hampered this cause as Harrell notes that success rate does not appear to be appreciably higher than it was before enterprise architecture was widely employed (Harrell, 2011, p. xii). Some argue that this is due ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. I V VI Adaptive Maintenance Adaptive maintenance is the process of creating flexible enhancements for a given piece of software. The addition of such features can be alluring to potential customers in that it could potentially offer something unique, or it could simplify a computerized process by executing new ideas or making use of new technologies. The process of enhancing current software however, can be a bit difficult as changes would have to be able to integrate almost seamlessly to the overall structure of the existing program. In some cases the process is further complicated by the fact that existing code may need to be carefully modified in order to be able to make the intended modifications. Occasionally desired changes cannot fit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Programs that are well maintained and refined are also cheaper to maintain due to having a better overall layout as well as better documentation. Programmers performing regular maintenance on such systems are able to be more efficient and can potentially spot any errors more easily. In some cases, a complete overhaul is necessary in order to improve the quality of a program. No system is truly perfect, however perfective maintenance can forestall the rate at which complications arise. One disadvantage is that a massive restructuring of assembly language could have a negative impact on the portability of the software itself. Typically systems that would be most likely to invest in perfective maintenance are those which serve an essential purpose in everyday life. One example would be a banking system in order to protect their software and avoid massive defects that could significantly impact their regular business operations. VIII Reengineering Source Code Sometimes coding is so badly written that it may as well be a foreign language with non descriptive variable names and few if any comments. Such code may be easily understood by the original programmer, however it can be difficult to read for anyone else. In such a scenario it would be beneficial to reengineer the code so that it s more readable and easily understood by most anyone who needs to work with it. Restructuring ...
