The Pros And Cons Of Colic
Colic is a form of spasmodic pain caused by internal muscle groups fighting to conquer an
obstruction. Colic isn t always simply a disorder in itself. It is, as an alternative, a form of pain
which comes and goes, commonly constructing as much as a minute or so of actual suffering
and subsiding to a dull ache earlier than building as much as some other crescendo. The web site
of the ache, as well as the time c program languageperiod in between every assault, can give your
physician a few very beneficial clues as to whether or not or now not you have got been struck by

Relationship Between Mesopotamian And Greek Gods
Throughout their histories, religion has played a central role in Mesopotamian and Greek culture.
Both peoples built mighty temples and made countless sacrifices in the name of their gods, but the
exact nature of their relationships with their gods remains a mystery. Historians are left to guess at
their customs and traditions from the works they left behind such as Homer s epic poem The Illiad
and the anonymous epic poem the Epic of Gilgamesh. From these texts, it becomes apparent that
the Mesopotamians relationship with their gods was one founded on a sense of respect while the
Greeks was one rooted in fear. Correspondingly, the Mesopotamian gods are more restrained and
nurturing in their interactions with humans while the Greek gods are brash and patronizing, though
neither set of gods is greatly concerned with the wellbeing of mortals. In both cultures, humans and
gods share an undeniable connection in their range and expression of emotion. As such, though
Mesopotamians and Greeks take different approaches to interaction with their gods and vice versa,
the relationship between humans and gods is fundamentally the same in both cultures.
From the human perspective, the Mesopotamians and Greeks share a strong sense of reverence for
their gods. They make regular sacrifices and hold their gods in the highest esteem, but these
sentiments come from different places. The Greeks act primarily out of fear while the
Mesopotamians act more out of a notion of respect. In

Designing A Data Centre Topology Architecture
Our IP Network will be simplified to strip out cost and complexity by taking out layers of
switching and routing and moving to a robust multi tenanted network supporting multiple lines of
business. Also our Distributed Cloud vision will require that we implement new infrastructure
(NFVI) in a number of our core, edge and access locations. To support this, we will create a Data
Centre topology architecture that lays out which locations will be upgraded to support what sort
of virtualised network functions. Refer to Figure 5 IP Network Simplification example below.
This Network Data Centre topology architecture will also need to be supported by a new IP

Transcendentalism, By Ralph Waldo Emerson
Re striking the Balance
In a constantly updating world, eventually cultural diffusion causes changes to a society s views
and practices over a period of time. With many religious pressures in Europe and the constant switch
between Catholicism and Protestantism, a group called the Puritans moved to America to start life
anew. The Puritan lifestyle took hold of America s New England colonies and became a theocracy of
how people lived their lives. People lived by the Puritan interpretation of the New Testament with
harsh forms of punishment for the violation of even the most simple sins. Because of this
restricting lifestyle and new ideas like the Enlightenment which caused intellectual reforms, people
started to break away from the extreme Puritan philosophy. Another movement occurring in
America called Transcendentalism, on the other side of the spectrum of Puritanism, started with
writer Ralph Waldo Emerson, specifically with his essay Nature . Emerson depicts the prime
example of the breaking away from strict religion to Transcendentalism. In America, Emerson was a
priest who had been ridiculed and had traveled to Europe to find himself. After meeting up with
writers of the Romanticism movement, he fell in love with it and brought it back to America under
the name of Transcendentalism. Puritanism and Transcendentalism have opposing philosophies
which include their view on people, philosophy and God , and on nature through essays and texts

Analysis Of The Book Julius Caesar With My Class
Recently I have gotten the chance to read the book play, Julius Caesar with my
class. Although it s hard to understand at times, and it s long and boring. I ve learned a
lot from the play already. Throughout this paper, I m going teach you and explain to you
one of the things I learned. This one thing I learned is going to be the main point of my
paper, with extras around it, that one thing is What is a roman tribune? and Why are
Marullus and Flavius, worried about Caesar? This play is full of twist and turns, by the
end of this paper, you will have an answer to both the questions.
In this play there are several different types of Roman Tribunes, some that hold
higher powers than others. One of the highest tribunes is Brutus, then there s
Cassius, and several more. I named these two mainly because they play a huge part in
this play. They are one of few that actually hold some type of power in the play, and their
close to one of the highest powers there is. This higher power you might ask? Goes by
the name of Julius Caesar.
Since Pompey died, the head person in charge, the king. Since he died, Caesar has
attempted to take his place. Although Caesar is the new highest power, he isn t as high a
he wants to be. While he s trying to get to the top, there are some of his tribunes that
don t want him to be the highest power, because other than them, no one knows how
Caesar really is. Caesar isn t aware o this, he thinks that everything is

Do We Write the Text We Read by Reed Way Dasenbrock
Reed Way Dasenbrock s Do We Write the Text We Read? focuses on how the reader s thoughts
about a novel originate with pre existing theories and how those theories can be altered and revised
as the text permits. Dasenbrock argues that through this passing theory, readers develop a sense of
value for the literary work and can progress their own learning capabilities. Dasenbrock utilizes
other theorists to make this point, specifically Stanley Fish who postulates that individuals read
texts differently because they interpret differently. He explains that interpretations of the reader are
created through their beliefs and furthermore, that because people have such different
interpretations, they are able to bring many different concepts to a community of readers. That
community is built by the common assumptions of the members of the community. Dasenbrock
adds to this theory by mentioning the importance of the dynamic evolution of texts that happen
across time. Fish, as Dasenbrock points out, states that the certain interpretations we hold are of
the only truth we should accept and that all other sources, due to their difference, register as false.
He disproves Fish s argument by bringing forth the idea that to say another individual s beliefs are
different than our own is to say that we understand their beliefs completely. He suggests that,
moreover, we can imply similar things by saying different words. There exists many differing ways
to observe, to interpret, and to

Red Bull Research
Executive Summary:
From conducting this report it was found that Red Bull energy drink is facing some problems, the
main one of which is the negative media that it has been receiving. However both primary and
secondary research shown that negative publicity does not affect buyer behaviour to a great extent.
Secondary research clearly states that Red Bull contains excessive amount of chemicals, some
publications even compare it to highly addictive drugs as well as blaming the product for some
deaths. Secondary data also helped us identify a growing number of competitors that Red Bull has,
the number exceeds a hundred. However, surprisingly to most, secondary research reports show
that the sales of the product are increasing each year ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Red Bull s popularity has spawned countless imitations, including Blue Ox, Red Rooster,
American Bull, Boost, Red Thunder, Shark etc. Overall, Red Bull has created a category that
currently includes 125 products. Several supermarkets groups have created their own house brands.
Examples include Tesco s Cranberry Diet Kick and ASDA s Lemon Lime flavoured version. All of
these new brands make up Red Bull s growing competition (www.bandddesign.com/energy)
Another issue which Red Bull is facing since shortly after its launch is the negative publicity
about the health risks that the drink leads to. Red Bull has been flagged by some health regulators
as a potential danger. Countries such as Denmark and France have banned the drink from their
markets, however the popularity of the drink especially amongst students is just increasing. It is
now seen as trendy or В‘cool to purchase the drink to В‘keep you going .
Overall we believe that this topic would be of a value because it would be interesting to see
whether bad publicity and health scares of this product have had any affect on the consumer
behaviour, and their buying patterns. Also with increasing competition coming into the market, it
would be relevant to see how, if in any way, the Red Bull has been affected.
To start of this report we will highlight our main objectives, these will be clearly stated and
summarised. It will follow on with

Buffers Lab
Buffers are solutions that resist change in pH when small amounts of strong acids or bases are
added to it. Adding a strong acid to a solution would decrease its pH as seen in fig 2 and adding
weak base would increase its pH as seen in fig. 3. One good use of buffers in a biology field is that
buffers control the pH in order for the cells to live in a livable environment. If the cell is too
basic it releases H+ ions into the cells and if its too acidic the buffer releases OH . Therefore,
buffers inside and outside the cells help maintain the pH in the cytoplasm because if the pH is not
applicable in the cell, the cell dies. To recap buffers in the cells, help to maintain an ideal
environment for biochemical reactions to take place.
However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In part 1 of the experiment was where a stock solution was prepared using different quantities of
acid and base and comparing the predicted PH using the Henderson hasselbach equation vs. the
measured pH using a pH probe. The Ph readings that was measured and graphed were pretty
close and off by approximately 0.03 0.08 points and we can say that is an accurate reading,
meaning that the probe was calibrated precisely in order to have a pH reading of the prepared
solution as close as possible to the predicted ph. When we used the hasselbach equation for the
predicted pH we were provided with a pKa of 7.18, looking at graph 1 at the intercept of each line,
the pKa of the measured pH is 7.195 and the predicted pH has a pKa value of 7.18, rounding
those values to one decimal place we get a pKa value of 7.2 for both and that is spot on compared
to the provided pKa for the Henderson hasselbach equation. Looking at the graph, we can conclude
that as pH increases the concentration of acid/base increases

The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner, is a novel for you more adventurous people. It

manipulative story begins with our narrator in the first person, Thomas, who will be our main
character throughout the journey. Our knowledge progresses as his does, making him a reliable

Abraham Lincoln From Peoria To Alton
From Peoria to Alton Grace Canfield Columbia Christian 9/20/17
Abraham Lincoln is revered as a hero throughout American history. He accomplished many
amazing and difficult feats such as abolishing slavery and winning the Civil War. He is thought
to be a role model, who was always on the right side of history. However, some people don t
always hold the same views as they were believed to have held. Lincoln s views on race relations
didn t remain so progressive, despite what people might think. During his speech in Illinois,
Lincoln debated about whether a negro was a man or not and he seemed to be interested in equal
rights. He is quoted to have said governments are instituted among ... Show more content on

So, Lincoln s views have changed over time, but not that drastically. He saw slavery for the horror
that it was, and decided to do something about it. He still held the views that in order for society
to function properly, black and white people had to be separate and pursuing their happiness in
their own ways. Lincoln was like the others back then, but his ideas were very progressive. The
idea that slavery was wrong was a radical concept, and it also helped win a war. If Lincoln had
been born around 2017, his views would probably be entirely different. Humanity has always been
a product of its time, but as long as the right decisions are made, it all works out in the end.

The Importance Of Hmong Culture
I do not think that there are cultural or linguistic factors, as many Hmong are gifted in mathematics,
and have passed the scientific baccalaureate in France. (Hua)
It was interesting to note that while many participants believed that Hmong culture plays a role in
the ability to learn mathematics, they were divided as to whether the role was positive or negative.
Advocating the latter, some stated that there are elements of Hmong culture and heritage that make
it more difficult to learn the subject:
Laos is one of the poorest countries in Asia, much more so than China or Thailand, so there is a
generational gap, and we have to give the younger generation time to adjust to a country that is not
our own. (Kajsiab)
Hmong culture is traditionally an oral culture, without writing, whose basic skills are agriculture
and crafts. This may explain why the second generation still have problems with writing and
mathematics. (Hli)
However, Npaim disagreed, putting forward a view that the ability to learn mathematics is personal:
The factor of culture does not affect the ability to learn mathematics because it depends on the
person and their character. (Npaim)
Eve and Kauj went further with their contrary opinion, implying that the fact that the Hmong
originate from a poor region of Asia gives them a greater incentive to learn mathematics:
I think mathematical ability is linked to the development of the country. The more one is in a rich
country the more people are happy to live with

The Picture Of Dorian Gray Essay
Artists of any art form tend to use real life experiences as their muse. Oscar Wilde was no
exception. In creating the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde used his experience of
sitting in on a painting session, done by a Basil Ward. He then proceeded to comment on how it
would be amazing if the painting aged while the subject of the painting did not. Throughout the
novel, we notice this kind of lifestyle being lived out by Dorian and Lord Henry, but we also see
how Dorian handles his conscience based on his actions. The Picture of Dorian Grayis a novel that,
while it has its controversies over what its purpose is, is a novel that can function as an
appropriate text for a wide variety of classes (Waldrep; Smith II 53). Despite what Wilde believed,
practiced, and even the preface of the novel, Wilde wrote this novel as a lesson on morality.
Oscar Wilde s inspirations for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray comes from his own life. Oscar
Wilde himself practiced aestheticism, or pleasing the self. A literary critic of Wilde s work, Richard
Ellmann, observes Wilde s life as bent on a subversion of propriety and sobriety (1). He even used
Mr. Basil Ward s name for the character Basil Hallward (Wilde; Jullian; Lawler 406). He
frequently looked to satisfy his own desires, whether they were morally or socially acceptable. He
once was arrested for homosexuality, which was a crime in England at the time. Even Wilde s
encounters with his fellow writers prompted an

In the beginning of the book Johnny behavior was very problematic, who at the time was
fourteen. Johnny was not mature, nor was he anywhere close to mature. He lives in the house of
the Laphams. Johnny who is an apprentice, is in charge of Dove and Dusty. Dove and Johnny
tend to bicker a lot because they do not get along. Johnny never treats Dove fairly, and Johnny
tends to pick on him as well. Dove who s lonely, is often misunderstood by many of the
characters in the book. Dove doesn t like Johnny because he is mean to him and is very
demanding. Johnny expects everything to be done in a blink of an eye, and if it s not, he becomes
extremely agitated. Mr. Lapham, who found out of Johnny s behavior, made him read out of the...

When Johnny burned his hand severely, he was limited on the things he could do around the house
at the Laphams. Cilla and Isannah would tease Johnny from time to time and Johnny would take it,
but he wouldn t really show that he didn t like being teased. He felt hopeless because he was
useless to the Lapham household. Johnny was kicked out of the Laphams because of his hand,
and felt very dismayed and was also filled with anger. Johnny wanted revenge, but didn t follow
through. This is the turning point of Johnny s personality. When Johnny went to Mr. Lytes
house to try to adopt him, Mr. Lyte laughed and sent him away which made Johnny mad. Johnny
showed Mr. Lyte his cup. Johnny thought that the Cup had led him to Mr. Lytes, which would
be where he truly belongs. When Johnny borrowed a coat from Rab, Mr. Lyte accused him of
stealing the coat and pressed charges on Johnny. This event made Johnny enraged because after
multiple times saying he did not steal it, Mr. Lyte did not believe him. Cilla testified for Johnny
which made him feel loved, which he had not felt in a long time. This made Johnny start to love
and care for others, since others had done the same for him. One thing that Johnny really got
caught by surprise was when Cilla kissed his hand. He said nothing. He was suddenly afraid he

Paramount Case Analysis Essay
1. WHY IS PARAMOUNT A TAKEOVER TARGET?
Paramount is a potential merger target to Viacom and QVC for a few key reasons outlined below:
Paramount Viacom:
(1) Synergy creation: The businesses of both companies are famous and highly complementary to
each other.
(2) Cost reduction: Paramount Viacom both have economies of scale and are doing business in a
similar industry.
(3) Addition of enhanced and complementary distribution capabilities, which will significantly
increase revenue.
(4) Better positioning: Will allow Viacom to gain a stronger competitive advantage against its peers.

Overall, Viacom seems like a much more viable target, for the main reason of having much greater
similarities with Paramount as compared to QVC.
3. VALUE PARAMOUNT AS A STANDв
ЂђALONE COMPANY USING BOTH THE APV AND
WACC METHOD.
After making assumptions about various valuation metrics and figures, we were able to value
paramount as a stand alone company using both the APV and WACC methods.
Our base case valuation (APV) was $46.11 per share
Our base case valuation (WACC) was $40.92 per share
Our assumptions and calculations leading up to these valuations are outlined in our exhibits 1
through 5.
We have specified the sources of our assumptions in exhibit 1, with a detailed segment on
assumptions that might require further reasoning.
4. AFTER VALUING PARAMOUNT, COMPARE YOUR VALUATION TO THE MARKET
PRICE. ARE THEY SIMILAR? IF NOT, HOW CAN YOU RECONCILE THEM?
Upon arriving at $46.11 (APV) and $40.92 (WACC) valuations for Paramount, we noticed that
these valuations were at a discount to the market price of $55.50.
Our reconciliation for this undervaluation is that the market is already pricing in a takeover.
Some evidence of this can be demonstrated by the 1.0 beta of paramount. If we look at the 1992 Q1
to August 30 1993 returns of S P500 and PCI, PCI is +30.6% and S P500 is +14.6%, which implies

Powerful Imagery and Themes in The Killer Angels Essay
In The Killer Angels, Michael Shaara fictionally illustrates the historical facts of the battle at
Gettysburg. Shaara gives action and words to characters of another time, and then places these
players on the stage of this great battle. Through the use of powerful biblical and non biblical
imagery and themes the epic nature of the battle at Gettysburgand its characters are enhanced. Such
imageryand themes, combined with Shaaras fictionalization, help to contribute to why this single
battle holds such monumental significance and influence upon the lives of Americans over a
century removed from its occurrence.
In the Foreword, before the battle begins, Shaara starts with a list of the principle players in the

This helps to give the entire event a timeless characteristic. The Confederates tend to fill the
aspects of biblical imagery and themes in more numerous ways than that of the Union side. This
is due, in part, to the fact that the Confederate Army had a more unified religious belief system as
well as a solid , devotional like faith in Lee as their leader. (Shaara ix)
Lee is the pinnacle of the Confederate hierarchy. He is like an angel of the Lord (Shaara 67) in
the presence of his men. On the first day of battle he is prompted from within himself to ride out
to merely be seen by his soldiers in the midst of battle in order to boost morale. (Shaara 112) Not
only is Lee aware of the importance he holds in the eyes of his men and the strength that he gives
them, but also in his weakness and weariness. He does not attribute to himself qualities that
superseded God. Shaara emphatically states that Lee believed absolutely in God . (Shaara x) Lee
s divinity is attributed to him by his men. For instance, Longstreet conveyed to Arthur Fremantle a
conversation concerning Darwin s theory of evolution. He stated that even though those
discussing the issue agreed that Darwin s theory was probably true, one person spoke out that
Lee didn t come from no ape . (Shaara 138) This implies that in the eyes of his men, Lee was
viewed as being apart from mere mortals. Although Lee alone

Figurative Language In Anne Bradstreet s To My Dear And...
Anne Bradstreet s poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband, is a small poem wherein she s
revealing her never ending love, devotion, and appreciation for her spouse. The fact that she was
born around the seventeenth century could mean it is puritan culture for women to remain
reserved, regardless of how they may truly feel; however, she makes it her obligation to make her
husbandaware of feelings, whether positive or negative. She uses figurative language and
declarative tone through imagery, repetition, and paradoxes to send her message. To My Dear and
Loving Husband can be interpreted in many ways by many different people depending how it is
initially read. This uncertainty allows the poem to be interpreted on a surface level and on a deeper
level.
One can sense the sincere meaning in poem on a literal level. A literal meaning of
Bradstreet s comes across when analyzed solely on the surface. It is initially assumed that she is
expressing her sincerest, undying love for husband. The poem opens with two if/then statements,
which sets up quite a logical tone. In the first line of her poem she states, If ever two were one,
then surely we (1). This line entertains the belief that she and her husband are one entity; what
happens to one, will happen to the other. Also, the speaker says that if two people were ever one
person, then she and her husband surely are. In the second, she says that if ever any man has been
loved by his wife, her husband has been. (2). As stated

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
In today s society, it is possible for a woman to achieve nearly anything; however, for a woman of
yesterday s society, bringing world wide recognition to the many faces of prejudice is an
accomplishment of its own. Author Harper Lee has had the honor to accomplish just that through
her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a moving and inspirational story about a young girl learning the
difference between the good and the bad of the world. In the small town of Monroeville,
Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Growing up, Harper Lee had three
siblings: two sisters and an older brother. She and her siblings grew up modestly. Even though
money was not as much of a problem for her family as it was for others of their time, her father
never did spoil her and her siblings. Lee and her brother attended a public grammar school in
Monroe County, and Harper Lee continued to further her education after her high school
graduation. She attended Huntingdon College for a year and then transferred to the University of
Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she studied law from 1945 to 1949. While she was at the University
of Alabama, she was also an exchange student at Oxford University in England for a year.
Harper Lee always had a passion for writing. She wrote articles and satires for her college
newspaper. Months before completing her law degree, Lee moved to New York to pursue a
writing career. Her first job was as an airlines reservations clerk. Although she never stopped writing

Stage 1.Introduction to Computer Science
In this stage, I have watched an introductory video about computer science and what a computer
scientist does in general. According to this video, computer science is a certain way to impact the
world. This course will provide more information about computer science and why it is important to
know.
Stage 2.The Maze
Here, I learned the basics about coding through different games. In the first one, I helped an
angry bird move through a maze in order to get to the evil pig. In order to write a program, I
needed to drag and drop blocks correctly. Also, by using the repeat block in the game I learned
how loops are valuable and how computer repeat commands can be useful so people do not waste
their time. Next, I had to use repeat until block to set determined goals such as until the angry bird
gets the pig. Another game was about a zombie that I needed to feed, where I also used repeat until
command to achieve the goal. Besides, I learnt about fundamental concept in programming if
statement. By using if commands the computer program makes a decision. Then, I learn about if
/else block command, which made a decision what zombie should do choosing between the two
actions. There were some struggles that I have faced. Sometimes I didn t quite

The Word Voodoo Means Spirit Of The West African
The word voodoo means spirit in the West African. It is a religion practiced by much Haitian
living in Haiti as well as the Diaspora. For the majority of Haitians, it is a symbol of solidarity of
how they stood up and fought for their rights and freedom. For others, it is a painful source of
reminder of how their ancestors were cruelly and unjustly treated by the Europeans.Even though the
slaves were forced to convert to the Roman Catholic Christianity by missionaries, they continue to
practice their faith. As a result, the voodoo is born out of the intermingling of beliefs and practices
of African culture and the Catholicism. Nowadays the voodoo plays important role in different
integrals politically and socially. In 1676, when the French colonized this Island, they possessed
vast land, fields, pastures and garden. They needed cheap labor for the grueling work, especially in
those sugars plantations. The slave system has already existed in the 16th century.
Upon their arrival, the owners stripped them of their fundamental human rights. They exploited
their skills and forbade practicing their traditional beliefs. The Europeans look down on African
beliefs as primitive and savage. They did not accept those beliefs as a genuine religion. As a result,
they baptized those poor souls as real Christians. Those slaves continued to practice their faith at
their peril. If they get caught, they were punished by lashing, imprisonments, and sometimes death.

The Temperance Movement Of Antebellum America
Antebellum Temperance The Temperance Movement in Antebellum America was one of the
largest moral reforms of in 1800s. Several members of the community fought for the prohibition
of alcohol, rather than just limiting the about being consumed. However, many farmers argued
that the society and its desire to eradicate King Alcohol as temperance advocates often termed
alcoholic beverages were a scheme to deprive the people of their liberty. Starting with main in the
1851, twelve states and territories outlawed the consumptions of alcohol. Temperance leaders
came about and the movement created many different temperance groups that later used an
assortment of tactics and persuasion to get their points across such as political, art, and even
education. During the first great wave of temperance protest lasting from the 1830s through the
1850s, working class radicals and union organizers had urged temperance as necessary to both
self improvement and resistance to workplace oppression. The American Temperance Society was
one of the first of groups to be established in 1826. Many other similar groups then began to
follow their lead. The brotherhoods temperance activity incorporated aspects of earlier working
class and middle class temperance efforts. For example, The Cold Water Army took pledges to only
drink water. Another group by the name of The Washingtonians worked together to form a support
group to help each other with their drinking problems, and encouraging no

The Conflict Of The Civil Republic Of Yugoslavia
1. Introduction
Whilst both Palestine have distinct cases for statehood, there cases have also many similarities.
Kosovo struggle for statehood has been going on since the collapse of Soviet Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia in 1992. Whilst the Palestinian campaign for statehood has endured since 1948.
Examining both of their cases under the theories of statehood and recognition, neither country
emerges with a conclusive case for statehood. However, Palestine has the objectively easier case. In
order to assess each case for statehood, first one must analyse the different eligibility for statehood
under the right to self determination. Next, one must evaluate the cases for statehood in respect to
the different theories of statehood. Following that, one should evaluate each entity s case for
recognition. Having completed the above process, it will become clear whether either state or both
states have a strong case for statehood.
2. Self Determination
For states to recognise an entity s status as a state, they must place great importance on whether the
entity has the right to self determination. This right initially arose in the context of de colonisation
after World War II as a demand for a people s equal rights to be independent and represented in front
of the international community. The right to self determination is the right to freely determine their
political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development . It has carried

The Joy Luck Club Narrative Style
In The Joy Luck Club, Tan has purposely externalized the eight characters mental world by allowing
each of them to tell her own story in a deceptively simple manner, thus allowing the reader to plunge
into the mind of the characters. The motives, desires, pains, pleasures, and concerns of the
characters are thereby effectively dramatized. This particular writing strategy allows Tan to
transcend the conventional novelistic dichotomy of preferred showing and undesirable telling. The
stories thus tell us a great deal about individual characters, their reaction to each other, and their
activities together. The Joy Luck Club is a bridge uniting both space and time. It connects the
sixteen intricately interlocking stories and helps to reveal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Unlike Tan s other novels, which are based on oral narratives of mothers, this story develops by
the act of documenting past. Ruth who is the ghost writer, major character, starts to amend her life
by initiating a unique creative writing, with all immaculate insight that she has attained about
herself. In other words, by looking back and by the power of recalling past memories, Ruth has
obtained a new vision of future; as she writes the story of her mother and her grandmother, she
reveals her vision, in the closing words of the novel, They write about what happened, why it
happened, how they can make other things happen. They write stories of things that are but should
not have been. They write about what could have been, what still might be. They write of a past
that can be changed. Ruth discovers the answer to her philosophical questions about life.
Interestingly, this insight belongs to a feminine sphere and its instructors are all women who share
their memories with their daughters, to protect them from hazards of life. Therefore, this story
develops by the act of documenting past. However, the written word serves to perform as the
savior of ancestral memories and preserves the history of a family and in larger scale, a

Quincey Schoolboy Q Hanley
Quincey ScHoolboy Q Hanley was born on October 26, 1986, in Lucius D. Clay Kaserne, an
American military complex in Wiesbaden, Germany, to a couple who split up before his birth. His
father remained in the Army, but Q and his mother moved to Houston, Texas. Because of the
strained relationship between his mother and father, Q was given a random last name possessed by
neither parent. Shortly after moving back to the United States, he and his mother relocated to her
former home in South Central, Los Angeles. Eventually he and his mother settled on 51st Street
between the notorious Hoover Street and Figueroa Streets, both famous for the abundance of
drugs and street violence. Q s mother worked as a night dispatcher for AAA, so he did not see
her very often while attending school and was partially raised by his grandmother. Despite
growing up in South Central, Los Angeles, Q s music influences are primarily East Coast rappers
such as The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and 50 Cent. Unlike Kendrick Lamar, Q did not develop an
interest in writing and performing music until his teenage years, and he did not start recording
music professionally until he was in his early 20s. Q s academic success during high school a
3.3 GPA until his final year earned him the nickname Schoolboy from his peers (his name is

Three Things I Learned From Cameron Russell s TED Talk
Looks aren t Everything. Believe Me, I am a Model
1.Three things I learned from Cameron Russell s TED Talk is that looks are deceiving, people
still judge based on someone s skin color or beauty, and how even if someone looks like the most
confident, pretty, rich, or happy person out there, that may not always the case. Additionally,
from the speaker s five main points, the first main point, how do you become a model?
illustrates being named a model is something very difficult to become because today s society is
very judgmental. However, from Cameron s second main point, can I be a model when I grow
up? explains that becoming a model is like winning the lottery, very rare and hard to get. From
the presenter s third main point, do they retouch all the photos? explains that what everyone sees
on TV, magazines, or social media are not real and that they are all retouched. The fourth main
point that Russell goes over, do you get free stuff? talks about how being or looking a specific
way has its advantages that others would not get away with. The fifth and last main point, she

Catherine Booth and the Salvation Army
Christmas is only a few weeks away and more than any other time of the year, thousands of people
in need are looking forward for the help of the Salvation Army. The members of the Salvation Army
are impatient to worship and listen to the Holy Spirit and once again follow the steps of their
mother of the Army, Catherine Booth. There are more than 1.5 million Salvationists across the
Europe and the United States, helping people in need for physical and spiritual salvation. In
1865, William Booth, a British Methodist preacher, found the Salvation Army with the help of his
wife Catherine Booth, who later was known as the mother of the Salvation Army. Their mission,
with the values of hope and justice, was to transform the lives of people, especially those in need
for spirituality. Do you also follow Christ? was Catherine s Constant question to her listeners. The
causes of Catherine Booth s success in her life can be summarized in three stages of: her
upbringing, her religion and desire to follow JesusChrist, and her marital life that gave her the
opportunity to serve in the Salvation Army.
The best gift that anyone can ask for in life is, to have a good and spiritual mother, and Catherine
was blessed with this gift. From childhood, Catherine was very spiritual and followed the Bible and
set Jesus Christ s teachings for her guidance in life. Catherine had an exceptional relationship with
her mother in every stage of her life and she had a major contribution to Catherine s

Design Patterns
Literature Review
Chapter One
Introduction
What is a Design Pattern?
A design pattern solves a problem within a given context. The solution that is offered by
implementing a pattern results in a system design structure, which balances the concerns of the
design problem in a manner most appropriate for the given context. In Understanding and Using
Patterns in Software Development , Dirk Riehle and Heinz Zullighaven offer a rather nice
definition of what a design pattern is:
A pattern is the abstraction from a concrete form which keeps recurring in specific non arbitrary
contexts.
The ability to write good patterns is very difficult. A pattern should not only convey the facts about
a system, but it should also tell a story about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The patterns described in the GoF book are illustrated in C++; a programming language that has
been declining in use over the last number of years, which limits the learning of patterns in today s
development environment where the dominant programming language taught and used, as far as
patterns are concerned is Java, although patterns can be implemented in any object orientated
programming language.
The patterns exhibited are described in very concise and restricted examples that lack a
comprehensive context in order for the reader to gain a full understanding of the use of the pattern
in question. The patterns throughout the book are also presented in isolation to each other which
hinders the illustration of pattern interaction and thus the full benefit to those wishing to learn how
to implement design patterns.
Allen Holub produced a book Holub on Patterns Learning Design Patterns by Looking at Code ,
which detailed the use of design patterns while developing a game called Game of Life. The
Game of Life is a cellular automation program, which begins with cells that are classed as either
alive or dead . The idea is then that each cell follows a set of rules to determine which whether it
can live or whether it must die .
Holubs book, published in 2004 addressed some of the shortcomings of the GoF publication, such
as the patterns were now demonstrated in Java, which has become the favoured language of the
software development industry,

Social Divisions In The Great Gatsby
My reading of American literature is concerned with this passage by Theodore Dreiser s An
American Tragedy. It explores variety within gender roles and the American dream of the times.
This is explored when social divisions are highlighted in the text in the phrase would have
assumed at once belonged to this world. The worlds that are shown to us are old and new in The
Great Gatsby, as there are many that are striving to achieve more wealth to belong to the new
world where all the industrial wealth is increasing in rates never seen before. The verb belonged
suggests the social status of women in those times, as men were the superior and women were to
follow behind as belongings , and the reader has to understand that men had the power and
dominance over women. The noun world suggests the divisions between the East side and the West
side as they are portraying social divisions throughout 1922 when The Great Gatsby was set.
Although An American Tragedywas set in 1925, a little after The Great Gatsby, we have reason to
conclude that similar social divisions were still in play. In The Great Gatsby, Nick, the narrator
of the novella, sees two kinds of America: the hard working Chicago, part of a Middle West
culture; and the white, fashionable East Egg. Nick may be able to make it in the Middle West, but
he is not cut out for East Coast life. This reference to the two worlds hints at the decadence of the
roaring 20s, a time in which which everyone was increasing in

Threat of Hackers on the Internet Essay
Research Critique The ability of the attackers to rapidly gain control of vast number of Internet
hosts poses an immense threat to the overall security of the Internet (Staniford, Paxson Weaver,
2002). Once compromised, these hosts can not only be used for massive Distributed Denial of
Service (DDoS) attacks, but also steal or corrupt great quantities of sensitive information by
confusing and disrupting the network in more subtle ways (Honeynet, 2005). The attackers
accomplish this task by sending an intrusion agent commonly known as В‘worm . There are two
major types of malicious codes in the wild (Todd, 2003, pp. 2). These codes are differentiated by
their means of propagation: worms are self replicating, self propagating,... Show more content on

First article that discussed self replicating code within a C compiler appeared in 1984 by
Thompson. Morris worm was launched in 1988, which had a devastating effect on the Internet
(Todd, 2003). Most research conducted so far has focused on modeling and detection of the
Internet worm propagation. However, the final objective of the research is containment and
elimination of these worms, which has not received enough research (Zheng Duan). This paper
discusses the possible future network attack which will probably use an organized army of
malicious nodes called malnets. These malnets are capable of delivering many different types of
attacks. According to several researchers who are working on finding out how the malicious
worms propagate on the internet the ground has already been set (Honeynet, 2005; Zheng Duan;
Geer, 2005; Staniford, Paxson Weaver, 2002). However, partly due to the lack of understanding of
the resiliency and efficiency a malnet can have, countering malnets has been ineffective (Li,
Ehrenkranz Kuenning, 2005). Placement of the article in the literature The paper is very recent and
appeared in 2005. Since the paper has an interesting and unique topic both in security of the Internet
and how distributed systems of malicious bots work it can be considered both as emerging seminal

establish good work ethics in which children will need as they grow into adult life. Proverbs 22:6
says Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it

Pros And Disadvantages Of Entrepreneur
A business leader who brings money, raw materials, manufacturing facilities, skilled labor is called
entrepreneur. Entrepreneur has worn many faces and played many roles. Most policy makers and
academics agree that entrepreneurship is critical to the development and well being of society. They
create jobs, drive and shape the innovation, speeding up the structural changes in the economy.
They are usually modeled as combinations of innovators with creative and innovative flair and
managers with general management skills.
According to the Richard Cantillon (1680 1734), entrepreneur is risk taker who has the foresight
and willingness to assume risk and take the require action to make profit or loss. His
entrepreneur is kind of forward looking and risk taking. Risks were distinguished by Frank Knight
(1885 1972) as capable of being measured and un measurable. According to Knight, entrepreneur
takes the latter risk which is no objective measure of probability of gain or loss. According to
Burke (2006), entrepreneur can be defined as a person who habitually creates and innovates to build
something of recognized value around perceived opportunities. Joseph Schumpeter (1883 1950) said
that entrepreneur is innovator who is the central figure in advancing the wealth of nations and
creating dynamics disequilibrium in the global economy. He pointed out that knowledge underlying
the innovation need not be newly discovered and may be existing knowledge that has never been

Lastly, international retailers engage in business in multiple countries. Examples of international

Targeting
As shown in Table 1, the target market of V shop is international clothing retailers, such as Zara, H

put toward technology advancements, such as V Shop. When the consumers are shopping for
clothing online, V Shop will help efficiently distribute retailer s products downstream by providing
a full understanding of the clothes what they want to purchase for potential customers.
The reason why the target market for V shop is international retailers, rather than local or
domestic, is because of the likelihood of them being interested in the software. Considering their
high revenues, the bet is on their ability to risk with launching the service on their websites. For
instance, the sales in the apparel sector in 2016 for H M reached $192.267 billion, for Gap Inc.
$15.516 billion, including their Old Navy brand (The H M Group, 2016).
According to an annual survey, which polled over 5,000 consumers, by comScore and UPS in

Sports In Sports Essay
Participating in sports from my youth years till graduating high school has had a contribution to
my outlook on the people surrounding me in daily life. Besides sport being fun and providing
exercise it has some not as obvious effects. Through sport you learn how to communicate and
work together as a team to strive for a set goal. Communication and team collaboration is an
important characteristic for anyone no matter their career field. For me, my sport experiences
have taught me that sometimes you have to find a way to work with people that you do not
necessarily like. It is unavoidable to always have only people you get along with on your team
whether it is a sports team or a team at a job. Sport teaches many new lessons to children which
initially are hard to understand but years later you look back and have that oh that is why moment.

Odyssey Fully Embodies the Greek Idea of Heroism
Greek mythology and the epic poems written during the Hellenistic period are filled with heroes
and their adventures, highlighting the qualities that Greeks perceived as valuable in men.
Odysseus, a prime example as the protagonist of The Odyssey, fully embodies the Greek idea of
heroism, using his physical skill, as well as his clever mind to overcome seemingly insurmountable
obstacles. From escaping the Cyclopslair to facing the suitors in Ithaca, Odysseus chooses to use
strategy over brute force often in The Odysseyand sets a precedent for future heroes of Western
epics.
While Odysseus has physical strength on his side, he often exercises his mental prowess,
acknowledging that not all battles can be won with brute force. In Book IX, New Coasts and
Poseidon s Son , Odysseus and his crew are trapped in the cave of a gigantic, man eating Cyclops,
Polyphemus. This monster s size and strength clearly outmatch the physical abilities of Odysseus
and his men, creating a situation comparable to the story of David and Goliath. Instead of relying
on his might, Odysseus uses his cunning brain and concocts a clever escape plan.
Now came the time to toss for it [a six foot pole]: who ventured along with me? whose hand could
bear to thrust and grind that spike in Kyklops eye, when mild sleep had mastered him? (9.359 62)
Knowing that, under normal circumstances, the Cyclops would be easily able to fend off any
attack by him and his men, Odysseus cleverly lulls the giant to sleep,

Mayor Of Casterbridge Narcissistic Characteristics
Renowned author and poet, Thomas Hardy, was born and raised in the English village of
Dorset, a town that s known for it s ability to remained relatively unchanged in both quality of
life and mentalities for hundreds of years. Hardy explores the characters in the town of
Casterbridge in his novel, The Mayor of Casterbridge, which is based on his own hometown of
Dorset. Within this town of Casterbridge, we follow, as Hardy puts it, A Story of a Man of
Character. This supposed Man of Character is Michael Henchard, who challenges the reader s
perception of what it means to have character. It also follows the characters of Elizabeth Jane,
Henchard s daughter, and Donald Farfrae, his co worker and later rival. During the course of the
book, it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that Henchard felt a sense of entitlement to Elizabeth Jane, a clear quality of a
narcissist. Just like a child who has had a toy taken away from him, he becomes upset that
something he views as his, no longer belongs to him. This is revealed earlier on with his fixation
of having her take his last name, thus marking her as his. Just like a true narcissist this brings
out a narcissistic rage in Henchard. He quickly begins to criticize and rage at her for anything
she does that reminds him of his former life. For example, her occasional pretty and picturesque
use of dialect words , which reveal her poor upbringing, force Henchard to think of his own past
when he too was poor (99). Though, quite hypocritically, though he is uncultivated himself he
becomes the bitterest critic the fair girl could possibly have had of her own lapses (100). He is
quick to rage and condemn Elizabeth Jane for her inability to completely erase the tongue of her
past, though ironically he can t erase his past either. Just like how Elizabeth Jane s accent
occasionally slips into her speech, similarly, Henchard s past throughout the novel continues to slip
into his new life. Needs more quotes: As the novel progresses, his attempt to control Elizabeth Jane,
and thus his past, begins to negatively affect the course of his future. After Henchard s first wife,
Susan, dies he sets his sight on marrying Lucetta, as they had previously

The Soviet Union As A Great Nation
Although often overlooked World War 2 can arguably seen as the most critical event in the history
of the Soviet Union. The result of the war was the epitome of Stalin s vision of success for the
Soviet Union. The War initially had a significantly positive impact on the Soviet Union in the short
term, however the results and effects of the War were a factor that ultimately led to the collapse of
the Soviet Unionas a whole.
The short term impact World War 2 had for the Soviet Union was positive for the growth and
evolution of the Soviet Union. The War both enhanced nationalism, and propelled the Soviet
Union to a major world player. In the eyes of Stalin, WWII was exactly what the Soviet Union
needed to evolve into a great nation. The war created great sense of nationalism and unity that
strengthened the core of the Soviet Union. Just as Stalin had hoped for the Soviet Union became
arguably the most nationalistic world power at the time; looking at the way the Soviet Union
fought the war can reasonably conclude this. The Soviets didn t not fight the war conservatively
whatsoever. Stalin and the Soviet army would take risks and lose lives in the name of defeating
fascist enemies. The Soviet army fought the war as if they re entire societal system was on the
line. Ordinary soldiers absorbed the attitudes of the Nazi and the Soviet leaders. Both sides
believed that defeat would lead to annihilation of their way of life (Suny 343). Another positive
impact WWII had on

Theme Of Sonnet 55
Sonnet 55 was written by William Shakespeare and can be found in the textbook on page 892.
Everyone wants to be remembered for something one way or another, and in Sonnet 55 Shakespeare
alludes to this. The theme of immortality is evident throughout the entire sonnet, and Shakespeare
does not stray away from it at all. Shakespeare s tone in the first quatrain of this sonnetcomes off as
a bit arrogant, but it is necessary to get his point across. His tone then shifts to being negative, but
quickly becomes much more uplifting from the third quatrain until the end of the sonnet. Imagery
of decay and destruction are also used in this sonnet to support the points that Shakespeare wants to
make. The first quatrain instantly shows the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, it can be argued that Shakespeare is talking about how war causes the death
of a culture, which leads to changes and people being forgotten (Shmoop Editorial Team, 2008).
When wasteful war shall statues overturn (5) is an example of alliteration used to help the
beginning of this quatrain flow smoothly. Shakespeare uses personification to drive home the
fact that death and fire cannot destroy ones living memory (8) that resides in the lines of his
sonnet: Nor Mars his sword nor war s quick fire shall burn/the living record of your memory (7
8). Shakespeare deviates from decay and destruction in the third quatrain to bring the theme of
immortality back to the forefront. His tone begins to sound more uplifting when talking about
going against death: Gainst death and all oblivious enmity/Shall you pace forth; your praise
shall still find room (9 10). In saying this, Shakespeare wants the readers to know that death is
not concerned with who is going against it, so if this sonnet marches forward though history the
prince will always be praised. His arrogance in this poem briefly shows itself again in this
quatrain: your praise shall still find room/even in the eyes of all posterity/That wear this world out
to the ending doom (10 12). In

The Beach Carrier Essay example
Q1:What is the nature of the product? What are its strengths and weaknesses?
A1:The Beach Carrier is a new product concept developed by Mary Ricci. It is a large,
lightweight, durable bag that is designed to carry everything required for a day at the beach,
including a chair. The Beach Carrier can be folded down to a 12 inch by 12 inch square for easy
storage when not in use. It comes with an adjustable strap and various sized pockets for carrying
all types of items to the beach or other outdoor activities (i.e. concerts, picnics, and barbecues).
The Beach Carrier possesses several strengths relative to competitive products in the market,
including the following:
1.First, the overall product concept of a single bag that can carry ... Show more content on

4.The fluorescent colors of the Beach Carrier are see through and considered trendy , lessening the
perceived quality of the bag.
Q2:What are the limitations to the assumptions Ricci has made in determining the market
potential? What risks do these present?
A2:In assessing the market potential for the Beach Carrier, there are several assumptions that Ricci
made that could significantly impact the overall market share potential. These include the following:
1.First of all, Mary Ricci has made the general and often popular assumption that bigger is better .
However, a 36 inch by 36 inch bag is huge and would be extremely heavy if completely filled.
People may prefer to have a smaller bag and limit the items that they bring to the beach or on
another outing.
2.Second, the Beach Carrier utilizes an adjustable shoulder strap for carrying and Mary has
assumed that this method would not be viewed as a negative when compared to the Caddy Shack
(backpack type) or the Wonder Wheel (oversized wheels). However, many consumers would likely
view these other carrying methods as an advantage, especially if one is packing lots of stuff
including chairs and umbrellas.
3.Next, Mary based her market research on all people who use suntan and/or sunscreen products.
This may be a significant overstatement of the market as many people who use these products

Romeo And Juliet Vs Luhrmann
In both versions of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Juliet voices her concerns about getting
married too quickly; however, the Luhrmann version uses lighting and music in a static manner,
which conveys a feeling of ignoring the seriousness of the scene, whereas the Zeffirelli version
changes the music and lighting with the emotion of the scene to effectively convey Juliet s
concerns. In the 1996 Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet, the use of music to convey Juliet s
uncertainty of marriage is less effective than the use of music in the 1968 Zeffirelli version. In Baz
Luhrmann s version of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet tells Romeo, O, wear not by

When Romeo reveals that he has been listening to Juliet profess her lover for hom, she responds
with, O gentle Romeo, / If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully. / Or, if thou thinkest I am too
quickly won, / I ll frown and be perverse and say thee nay, / So thou wilt woo, but else not for the
world (2.2.98 103). During these lines, in the Luhrmann film the halo effect on Juliet is fairly
represented, but in the Zeffirelli version, it is in full effect. The rear lighting on Juliet is used to
convey innocence because at this time all her emotions and thoughts are out in the open and she is
vulnerable, so the lack of halo effect muddles the emotional aspect of Juliet s confessions. Baz
Luhrmann uses dark, neutral lighting in the beginning of the balcony scene until Romeo reveals
his presence to Juliet and they both fall into the Capulet s pool. In the pool the lighting is much
brighter, but still very neutral on both Romeo and Juliet, especially when Juliet says, Although I joy
in thee, I have no joy of this contract tonight. It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, Too like the
lightning, which doth cease to be Ere one can say It lightens (2.2.123 127). The static lighting does
not put any emphasis on the

The Adolescent Years And Emerging Adulthood
The adolescent years and emerging adulthood have completely different phases. The assignment
was to ask two different people of two different ages an allotment of questions. I chose to ask my
sister, Nicolle, who is fifteen years of age and in the category of teenager, and asked my
boyfriend, Collin, who is twenty one years of age and an emerging adult. Nicolle is a junior in high
school, while Collin is a returned missionary attending Brigham Young University. Each of them
has lived similar, yet quite different lives.
Time
The first question I asked to each of my participants was, how much time do you spend with
friends outside of school? Nicolle s answer was approximately an hour and half depending on the
day of the week. During the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the moment his last class gets out on Friday to Sunday evening, he is with friends. He
doesn t have time to hang out with friends because he is extremely busy. As you are beginning to
emerge into adulthood, you are required to become more responsible and spend your time more
wisely. Emerging adults have bills to pay, homework to do constantly, and a job to do. There isn t
a whole lot of time left to spend with friends until you get all of your work done.
The next question I asked both of them was, How much time do you spend each day online or
texting your friends? Both Collin s and Nicolle s answers were very similar when it came to the
texting part of the question. They both claim they text their friends from the moment they wake up
to the moment they go to bed, so pretty much ALL DAY. The online part of the question was quite
different. Nicolle stated that she doesn t spend a lot of time on the computer because she doesn t
have time to be online surfing the Internet, but Collin, on the other hand, says he spends all day on
the Internet for classes. The answers were quite similar, because social media and the Internet are a
prominent figure in this generation s lifestyle.
Another question I asked Collin and Nicolle was, How much time do you spend watching TV or
Netflix/movies? Nicolle s answer was astonishing. She said that she comes home and just heavily
plops down in front of the TV when she isn t working or doing homework. Collin states that he

Mulan Women
Mulan goes off on her own, knowing the consequences she will have to face if she is caught
attending the war as a woman. The ancestors awaken and they all argue about the situation that
Mulan is in and how she has went off alone. They explain how Mulan, going to the war, will
dishonor the Fa family, even further than she has done when she was meeting the matchmaker.
The very scene of them discussing has a very dark and gray color to it, representing the despair
that the ancestors all feel about Mulan participating in the war. They do not agree with the attitude
and decisions of Mulan. One of the ancestors even said that she did not like Mulan from the
moment she was born and told the other that she was a child full of trouble. This depicts... Show

Mulan, not knowing how to act as a man, is dumbfounded by the actions that these men take.
Compared to Mulan, the men are much larger in size, more buff and fat. Men are shown clipping
their toenails with chopsticks, picking their own boogers, and also fighting amongst each other.
This portrays how men were depicted at this time, very unrefined compared to the women.
Mushu, being a male dragon, explains to Mulan about what it takes to be man, how hitting each
other is another form of greeting to men. Mushu defines men as rowdy, disgusting, and
uncivilized and Mulan very much agrees due to the disgusting aspect she sees of men. Here, she
then meets Yao, Ling, and Chien Po, who all are depicted to show stupidity in men. Mushu s
teachings on how to be a man causes conflict between Mulan and these three men. At the camp,
Mulan outwits these three stooges many times when she is in harm s way. Here, not only does
she meet Yao, Ling, and Chien Po, but also Captain Shang, who gives off a feeling of duty and
pride. Shang trains Mulan and everyone else in the training camp on what it is like to be a

Struggles Of A Black Man
Struggles Of a Black Man Ballad of the Landlord is a poem by Langston Hughes that shows the
struggles of a black man in a white society. There are opposing forces that make this black man
suffer and he gets no retribution or any justice for the things that the people accuse him of.
Through each of these voices the poem is thoroughly explained and can be analysed in such a
way. The forces in this poem is the tenant, landlord, police, and the press. Each one of these
forces shows the racial struggles of an innocent black man. The main person in the poem is the
tenant, which in the last line tells us, he is black. The tenant is characterized by his slang and
his strong dislike for the landlord. The tenant uses slang, contracted words, and nonstandard
grammar. This non formal way of English suggests the tenant s separation from the world of
convention, represented by the formal way of the police and the press, which appear later in the
poem. Although the tenant speaks in a non formal way, do not let that fool you. The tenant s
reason to be mad at the landlord is reasonable and just. He begins with a reasonable complaint and
a gentle reminder that the complaint is already a week old: My roof has sprung a leak. / Don t you
member I told you about it / Way last week? (lines 2 4). In the second stanza, he appeals
diplomatically to the landlord s self interest: These steps is broken down. / When you come up
yourself / It s a wonder you don t fall down (6 8). In the third

Themes in the Novel and Movie Adaptation of James Cain s Mildred Pierce
In contemporary film making, Hollywood ization generally refers to the re creation of a classic
work in a form more vulgar and sexually explicit than the original in an effort to boost movie
attendance. After all, sex and violence sell. However, from the mid 1930 s to the 1950 s,
Hollywood ization referred to the opposite case where controversial books had to be purified to
abide by the Production Code of 1934.[1] This occurred to many of James Cain s novels as they
moved from text to the genre of film noir. As has been said about Cain s The Postman Always
Rings Twice, The property, bought several years ago, was kept in the studio s archivesuntil now ...

A particularly strong theme that runs through the entire novel is the unusual power that women
play over the men in their lives. Rather than simply being passive to the impulses of men, Mildred
takes charge of her life and decides which men she will be with and leaves those that she no
longer has an affection for. Cain dives into more controversial territory by having Mildred use men
for her own sexual satisfaction. Cain also moves women into the role of successful breadwinners
during a time where men generally held financial power further blurring traditional roles of gender.
However, Mildred does not completely free herself of all familial responsibilities as she is still
held captive through her obsession with her daughter Veda. As with many housewives, her sense
of self identity is drawn from her role as a mother and she caters to the desires of her daughter to
the point that they are almost self destructive. It is Veda s extravagant tastes that drive her mother
to work hard and draws resources away from her business ultimately resulting in its collapse.
Moreover, Mildred must deal with the lack of gratitude and outright contempt that she receives
from her own daughter for working in a blue collar job.
Madden is right stating that the book provided an unpopularized version of life in the 1930 s.
However, it ultimately doesn t not go

  • 3. Relationship Between Mesopotamian And Greek Gods Throughout their histories, religion has played a central role in Mesopotamian and Greek culture. Both peoples built mighty temples and made countless sacrifices in the name of their gods, but the exact nature of their relationships with their gods remains a mystery. Historians are left to guess at their customs and traditions from the works they left behind such as Homer s epic poem The Illiad and the anonymous epic poem the Epic of Gilgamesh. From these texts, it becomes apparent that the Mesopotamians relationship with their gods was one founded on a sense of respect while the Greeks was one rooted in fear. Correspondingly, the Mesopotamian gods are more restrained and nurturing in their interactions with humans while the Greek gods are brash and patronizing, though neither set of gods is greatly concerned with the wellbeing of mortals. In both cultures, humans and gods share an undeniable connection in their range and expression of emotion. As such, though Mesopotamians and Greeks take different approaches to interaction with their gods and vice versa, the relationship between humans and gods is fundamentally the same in both cultures. From the human perspective, the Mesopotamians and Greeks share a strong sense of reverence for their gods. They make regular sacrifices and hold their gods in the highest esteem, but these sentiments come from different places. The Greeks act primarily out of fear while the Mesopotamians act more out of a notion of respect. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Designing A Data Centre Topology Architecture Our IP Network will be simplified to strip out cost and complexity by taking out layers of switching and routing and moving to a robust multi tenanted network supporting multiple lines of business. Also our Distributed Cloud vision will require that we implement new infrastructure (NFVI) in a number of our core, edge and access locations. To support this, we will create a Data Centre topology architecture that lays out which locations will be upgraded to support what sort of virtualised network functions. • 5. Transcendentalism, By Ralph Waldo Emerson Re striking the Balance In a constantly updating world, eventually cultural diffusion causes changes to a society s views and practices over a period of time. With many religious pressures in Europe and the constant switch between Catholicism and Protestantism, a group called the Puritans moved to America to start life anew. The Puritan lifestyle took hold of America s New England colonies and became a theocracy of how people lived their lives. People lived by the Puritan interpretation of the New Testament with harsh forms of punishment for the violation of even the most simple sins. Because of this restricting lifestyle and new ideas like the Enlightenment which caused intellectual reforms, people started to break away from the extreme Puritan philosophy. Another movement occurring in America called Transcendentalism, on the other side of the spectrum of Puritanism, started with writer Ralph Waldo Emerson, specifically with his essay Nature . Emerson depicts the prime example of the breaking away from strict religion to Transcendentalism. In America, Emerson was a priest who had been ridiculed and had traveled to Europe to find himself. After meeting up with writers of the Romanticism movement, he fell in love with it and brought it back to America under the name of Transcendentalism. Puritanism and Transcendentalism have opposing philosophies which include their view on people, philosophy and God , and on nature through essays and texts by: William Bradford, Anne ... • 6. Analysis Of The Book Julius Caesar With My Class Recently I have gotten the chance to read the book play, Julius Caesar with my class. Although it s hard to understand at times, and it s long and boring. I ve learned a lot from the play already. Throughout this paper, I m going teach you and explain to you one of the things I learned. This one thing I learned is going to be the main point of my paper, with extras around it, that one thing is What is a roman tribune? and Why are Marullus and Flavius, worried about Caesar? This play is full of twist and turns, by the end of this paper, you will have an answer to both the questions. In this play there are several different types of Roman Tribunes, some that hold higher powers than others. One of the highest tribunes is Brutus, then there s Cassius, and several more. I named these two mainly because they play a huge part in this play. They are one of few that actually hold some type of power in the play, and their close to one of the highest powers there is. This higher power you might ask? Goes by the name of Julius Caesar. Since Pompey died, the head person in charge, the king. Since he died, Caesar has attempted to take his place. Although Caesar is the new highest power, he isn t as high a he wants to be. While he s trying to get to the top, there are some of his tribunes that don t want him to be the highest power, because other than them, no one knows how Caesar really is. Caesar isn t aware o this, he thinks that everything is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Do We Write the Text We Read by Reed Way Dasenbrock Reed Way Dasenbrock s Do We Write the Text We Read? focuses on how the reader s thoughts about a novel originate with pre existing theories and how those theories can be altered and revised as the text permits. Dasenbrock argues that through this passing theory, readers develop a sense of value for the literary work and can progress their own learning capabilities. Dasenbrock utilizes other theorists to make this point, specifically Stanley Fish who postulates that individuals read texts differently because they interpret differently. He explains that interpretations of the reader are created through their beliefs and furthermore, that because people have such different interpretations, they are able to bring many different concepts to a community of readers. That community is built by the common assumptions of the members of the community. Dasenbrock adds to this theory by mentioning the importance of the dynamic evolution of texts that happen across time. Fish, as Dasenbrock points out, states that the certain interpretations we hold are of the only truth we should accept and that all other sources, due to their difference, register as false. He disproves Fish s argument by bringing forth the idea that to say another individual s beliefs are different than our own is to say that we understand their beliefs completely. He suggests that, moreover, we can imply similar things by saying different words. There exists many differing ways to observe, to interpret, and to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Red Bull Research Executive Summary: From conducting this report it was found that Red Bull energy drink is facing some problems, the main one of which is the negative media that it has been receiving. However both primary and secondary research shown that negative publicity does not affect buyer behaviour to a great extent. Secondary research clearly states that Red Bull contains excessive amount of chemicals, some publications even compare it to highly addictive drugs as well as blaming the product for some deaths. Secondary data also helped us identify a growing number of competitors that Red Bull has, the number exceeds a hundred. However, surprisingly to most, secondary research reports show that the sales of the product are increasing each year ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Red Bull s popularity has spawned countless imitations, including Blue Ox, Red Rooster, American Bull, Boost, Red Thunder, Shark etc. Overall, Red Bull has created a category that currently includes 125 products. Several supermarkets groups have created their own house brands. Examples include Tesco s Cranberry Diet Kick and ASDA s Lemon Lime flavoured version. All of these new brands make up Red Bull s growing competition (www.bandddesign.com/energy) Another issue which Red Bull is facing since shortly after its launch is the negative publicity about the health risks that the drink leads to. Red Bull has been flagged by some health regulators as a potential danger. Countries such as Denmark and France have banned the drink from their markets, however the popularity of the drink especially amongst students is just increasing. It is now seen as trendy or В‘cool to purchase the drink to В‘keep you going . Overall we believe that this topic would be of a value because it would be interesting to see whether bad publicity and health scares of this product have had any affect on the consumer behaviour, and their buying patterns. Also with increasing competition coming into the market, it would be relevant to see how, if in any way, the Red Bull has been affected. • 9. Buffers Lab Buffers are solutions that resist change in pH when small amounts of strong acids or bases are added to it. Adding a strong acid to a solution would decrease its pH as seen in fig 2 and adding weak base would increase its pH as seen in fig. 3. One good use of buffers in a biology field is that buffers control the pH in order for the cells to live in a livable environment. If the cell is too basic it releases H+ ions into the cells and if its too acidic the buffer releases OH . Therefore, buffers inside and outside the cells help maintain the pH in the cytoplasm because if the pH is not applicable in the cell, the cell dies. To recap buffers in the cells, help to maintain an ideal environment for biochemical reactions to take place. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In part 1 of the experiment was where a stock solution was prepared using different quantities of acid and base and comparing the predicted PH using the Henderson hasselbach equation vs. the measured pH using a pH probe. The Ph readings that was measured and graphed were pretty close and off by approximately 0.03 0.08 points and we can say that is an accurate reading, meaning that the probe was calibrated precisely in order to have a pH reading of the prepared solution as close as possible to the predicted ph. When we used the hasselbach equation for the predicted pH we were provided with a pKa of 7.18, looking at graph 1 at the intercept of each line, the pKa of the measured pH is 7.195 and the predicted pH has a pKa value of 7.18, rounding those values to one decimal place we get a pKa value of 7.2 for both and that is spot on compared to the provided pKa for the Henderson hasselbach equation. Looking at the graph, we can conclude that as pH increases the concentration of acid/base increases ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Abraham Lincoln From Peoria To Alton From Peoria to Alton Grace Canfield Columbia Christian 9/20/17 Abraham Lincoln is revered as a hero throughout American history. He accomplished many amazing and difficult feats such as abolishing slavery and winning the Civil War. He is thought to be a role model, who was always on the right side of history. However, some people don t always hold the same views as they were believed to have held. Lincoln s views on race relations didn t remain so progressive, despite what people might think. Lincoln was like the others back then, but his ideas were very progressive. The idea that slavery was wrong was a radical concept, and it also helped win a war. If Lincoln had been born around 2017, his views would probably be entirely different. • 13. The Importance Of Hmong Culture I do not think that there are cultural or linguistic factors, as many Hmong are gifted in mathematics, and have passed the scientific baccalaureate in France. (Hua) It was interesting to note that while many participants believed that Hmong culture plays a role in the ability to learn mathematics, they were divided as to whether the role was positive or negative. Advocating the latter, some stated that there are elements of Hmong culture and heritage that make it more difficult to learn the subject: Laos is one of the poorest countries in Asia, much more so than China or Thailand, so there is a generational gap, and we have to give the younger generation time to adjust to a country that is not our own. (Kajsiab) Hmong culture is traditionally an oral culture, without writing, whose basic skills are agriculture and crafts. This may explain why the second generation still have problems with writing and mathematics. (Hli) However, Npaim disagreed, putting forward a view that the ability to learn mathematics is personal: The factor of culture does not affect the ability to learn mathematics because it depends on the person and their character. (Npaim) Eve and Kauj went further with their contrary opinion, implying that the fact that the Hmong originate from a poor region of Asia gives them a greater incentive to learn mathematics: I think mathematical ability is linked to the development of the country. • 14. The Picture Of Dorian Gray Essay Artists of any art form tend to use real life experiences as their muse. Oscar Wilde was no exception. In creating the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde used his experience of sitting in on a painting session, done by a Basil Ward. He then proceeded to comment on how it would be amazing if the painting aged while the subject of the painting did not. Throughout the novel, we notice this kind of lifestyle being lived out by Dorian and Lord Henry, but we also see how Dorian handles his conscience based on his actions. The Picture of Dorian Grayis a novel that, while it has its controversies over what its purpose is, is a novel that can function as an appropriate text for a wide variety of classes (Waldrep; Smith II 53). Despite what Wilde believed, practiced, and even the preface of the novel, Wilde wrote this novel as a lesson on morality. Oscar Wilde s inspirations for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray comes from his own life. Oscar Wilde himself practiced aestheticism, or pleasing the self. A literary critic of Wilde s work, Richard Ellmann, observes Wilde s life as bent on a subversion of propriety and sobriety (1). He even used Mr. Basil Ward s name for the character Basil Hallward (Wilde; Jullian; Lawler 406). He frequently looked to satisfy his own desires, whether they were morally or socially acceptable. He once was arrested for homosexuality, which was a crime in England at the time. Even Wilde s encounters with his fellow writers prompted an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This event made Johnny enraged because after multiple times saying he did not steal it, Mr. Lyte did not believe him. Cilla testified for Johnny which made him feel loved, which he had not felt in a long time. This made Johnny start to love and care for others, since others had done the same for him. One thing that Johnny really got caught by surprise was when Cilla kissed his hand. He said nothing. He was suddenly afraid he might cry. VALUE PARAMOUNT AS A STANDв ЂђALONE COMPANY USING BOTH THE APV AND WACC METHOD. After making assumptions about various valuation metrics and figures, we were able to value paramount as a stand alone company using both the APV and WACC methods. Our base case valuation (APV) was $46.11 per share Our base case valuation (WACC) was $40.92 per share Our assumptions and calculations leading up to these valuations are outlined in our exhibits 1 through 5. We have specified the sources of our assumptions in exhibit 1, with a detailed segment on assumptions that might require further reasoning. 4. AFTER VALUING PARAMOUNT, COMPARE YOUR VALUATION TO THE MARKET PRICE. ARE THEY SIMILAR? IF NOT, HOW CAN YOU RECONCILE THEM? Upon arriving at $46.11 (APV) and $40.92 (WACC) valuations for Paramount, we noticed that these valuations were at a discount to the market price of $55.50. Our reconciliation for this undervaluation is that the market is already pricing in a takeover. Some evidence of this can be demonstrated by the 1.0 beta of paramount. If we look at the 1992 Q1

Through the use of powerful biblical and non biblical imagery and themes the epic nature of the battle at Gettysburgand its characters are enhanced. This helps to give the entire event a timeless characteristic. The Confederates tend to fill the aspects of biblical imagery and themes in more numerous ways than that of the Union side. This is due, in part, to the fact that the Confederate Army had a more unified religious belief system as well as a solid , devotional like faith in Lee as their leader. (Shaara ix) Lee is the pinnacle of the Confederate hierarchy. He is like an angel of the Lord (Shaara 67) in the presence of his men. On the first day of battle he is prompted from within himself to ride out to merely be seen by his soldiers in the midst of battle in order to boost morale. (Shaara 112) Not only is Lee aware of the importance he holds in the eyes of his men and the strength that he gives them, but also in his weakness and weariness. He does not attribute to himself qualities that superseded God. Shaara emphatically states that Lee believed absolutely in God . (Shaara x) Lee s divinity is attributed to him by his men. For instance, Longstreet conveyed to Arthur Fremantle a conversation concerning Darwin s theory of evolution. He stated that even though those discussing the issue agreed that Darwin s theory was probably true, one person spoke out that Lee didn t come from no ape . • 20. Figurative Language In Anne Bradstreet s To My Dear And... Anne Bradstreet s poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband, is a small poem wherein she s revealing her never ending love, devotion, and appreciation for her spouse. The fact that she was born around the seventeenth century could mean it is puritan culture for women to remain reserved, regardless of how they may truly feel; however, she makes it her obligation to make her husbandaware of feelings, whether positive or negative. She uses figurative language and declarative tone through imagery, repetition, and paradoxes to send her message. To My Dear and Loving Husband can be interpreted in many ways by many different people depending how it is initially read. This uncertainty allows the poem to be interpreted on a surface level and on a deeper level. One can sense the sincere meaning in poem on a literal level. A literal meaning of Bradstreet s comes across when analyzed solely on the surface. It is initially assumed that she is expressing her sincerest, undying love for husband. The poem opens with two if/then statements, which sets up quite a logical tone. In the first line of her poem she states, If ever two were one, then surely we (1). This line entertains the belief that she and her husband are one entity; what happens to one, will happen to the other. Also, the speaker says that if two people were ever one person, then she and her husband surely are. In the second, she says that if ever any man has been loved by his wife, her husband has been. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee In today s society, it is possible for a woman to achieve nearly anything; however, for a woman of yesterday s society, bringing world wide recognition to the many faces of prejudice is an accomplishment of its own. Author Harper Lee has had the honor to accomplish just that through her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a moving and inspirational story about a young girl learning the difference between the good and the bad of the world. In the small town of Monroeville, Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Growing up, Harper Lee had three siblings: two sisters and an older brother. She and her siblings grew up modestly. Even though money was not as much of a problem for her family as it was for others of their time, her father never did spoil her and her siblings. Lee and her brother attended a public grammar school in Monroe County, and Harper Lee continued to further her education after her high school graduation. She attended Huntingdon College for a year and then transferred to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she studied law from 1945 to 1949. While she was at the University of Alabama, she was also an exchange student at Oxford University in England for a year. Harper Lee always had a passion for writing. Kosovo struggle for statehood has been going on since the collapse of Soviet Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. Whilst the Palestinian campaign for statehood has endured since 1948. Examining both of their cases under the theories of statehood and recognition, neither country emerges with a conclusive case for statehood. However, Palestine has the objectively easier case. In order to assess each case for statehood, first one must analyse the different eligibility for statehood under the right to self determination. Next, one must evaluate the cases for statehood in respect to the different theories of statehood. Following that, one should evaluate each entity s case for recognition. Having completed the above process, it will become clear whether either state or both states have a strong case for statehood. 2. Self Determination For states to recognise an entity s status as a state, they must place great importance on whether the entity has the right to self determination. This right initially arose in the context of de colonisation after World War II as a demand for a people s equal rights to be independent and represented in front of the international community. The patterns exhibited are described in very concise and restricted examples that lack a comprehensive context in order for the reader to gain a full understanding of the use of the pattern in question. • 34. Social Divisions In The Great Gatsby My reading of American literature is concerned with this passage by Theodore Dreiser s An American Tragedy. It explores variety within gender roles and the American dream of the times. This is explored when social divisions are highlighted in the text in the phrase would have assumed at once belonged to this world. The worlds that are shown to us are old and new in The Great Gatsby, as there are many that are striving to achieve more wealth to belong to the new world where all the industrial wealth is increasing in rates never seen before. The verb belonged suggests the social status of women in those times, as men were the superior and women were to follow behind as belongings , and the reader has to understand that men had the power and dominance over women. The noun world suggests the divisions between the East side and the West side as they are portraying social divisions throughout 1922 when The Great Gatsby was set. Although An American Tragedywas set in 1925, a little after The Great Gatsby, we have reason to conclude that similar social divisions were still in play. In The Great Gatsby, Nick, the narrator of the novella, sees two kinds of America: the hard working Chicago, part of a Middle West culture; and the white, fashionable East Egg. Odyssey Fully Embodies the Greek Idea of Heroism Greek mythology and the epic poems written during the Hellenistic period are filled with heroes and their adventures, highlighting the qualities that Greeks perceived as valuable in men. Odysseus, a prime example as the protagonist of The Odyssey, fully embodies the Greek idea of heroism, using his physical skill, as well as his clever mind to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. From escaping the Cyclopslair to facing the suitors in Ithaca, Odysseus chooses to use strategy over brute force often in The Odysseyand sets a precedent for future heroes of Western epics. While Odysseus has physical strength on his side, he often exercises his mental prowess, acknowledging that not all battles can be won with brute force. In Book IX, New Coasts and Poseidon s Son , Odysseus and his crew are trapped in the cave of a gigantic, man eating Cyclops, Polyphemus. This monster s size and strength clearly outmatch the physical abilities of Odysseus and his men, creating a situation comparable to the story of David and Goliath. Instead of relying on his might, Odysseus uses his cunning brain and concocts a clever escape plan. The result of the war was the epitome of Stalin s vision of success for the Soviet Union. The War initially had a significantly positive impact on the Soviet Union in the short term, however the results and effects of the War were a factor that ultimately led to the collapse of the Soviet Unionas a whole. The short term impact World War 2 had for the Soviet Union was positive for the growth and evolution of the Soviet Union. The War both enhanced nationalism, and propelled the Soviet Union to a major world player. In the eyes of Stalin, WWII was exactly what the Soviet Union needed to evolve into a great nation. The war created great sense of nationalism and unity that strengthened the core of the Soviet Union. Just as Stalin had hoped for the Soviet Union became arguably the most nationalistic world power at the time; looking at the way the Soviet Union fought the war can reasonably conclude this. The Soviets didn t not fight the war conservatively whatsoever. Stalin and the Soviet army would take risks and lose lives in the name of defeating fascist enemies. Everyone wants to be remembered for something one way or another, and in Sonnet 55 Shakespeare alludes to this. The theme of immortality is evident throughout the entire sonnet, and Shakespeare does not stray away from it at all. Shakespeare s tone in the first quatrain of this sonnetcomes off as a bit arrogant, but it is necessary to get his point across. On the other hand, it can be argued that Shakespeare is talking about how war causes the death of a culture, which leads to changes and people being forgotten (Shmoop Editorial Team, 2008). When wasteful war shall statues overturn (5) is an example of alliteration used to help the beginning of this quatrain flow smoothly. Shakespeare uses personification to drive home the fact that death and fire cannot destroy ones living memory (8) that resides in the lines of his sonnet: Nor Mars his sword nor war s quick fire shall burn/the living record of your memory (7 8). Shakespeare deviates from decay and destruction in the third quatrain to bring the theme of immortality back to the forefront. His tone begins to sound more uplifting when talking about going against death: Gainst death and all oblivious enmity/Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room (9 10). In saying this, Shakespeare wants the readers to know that death is not concerned with who is going against it, so if this sonnet marches forward though history the prince will always be praised. Q2:What are the limitations to the assumptions Ricci has made in determining the market potential? What risks do these present? A2:In assessing the market potential for the Beach Carrier, there are several assumptions that Ricci made that could significantly impact the overall market share potential. These include the following: 1.First of all, Mary Ricci has made the general and often popular assumption that bigger is better . However, a 36 inch by 36 inch bag is huge and would be extremely heavy if completely filled. People may prefer to have a smaller bag and limit the items that they bring to the beach or on another outing. 2.Second, the Beach Carrier utilizes an adjustable shoulder strap for carrying and Mary has assumed that this method would not be viewed as a negative when compared to the Caddy Shack (backpack type) or the Wonder Wheel (oversized wheels). However, many consumers would likely view these other carrying methods as an advantage, especially if one is packing lots of stuff including chairs and umbrellas. 3.Next, Mary based her market research on all people who use suntan and/or sunscreen products. Romeo And Juliet Vs Luhrmann In both versions of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Juliet voices her concerns about getting married too quickly; however, the Luhrmann version uses lighting and music in a static manner, which conveys a feeling of ignoring the seriousness of the scene, whereas the Zeffirelli version changes the music and lighting with the emotion of the scene to effectively convey Juliet s concerns. In the 1996 Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet, the use of music to convey Juliet s uncertainty of marriage is less effective than the use of music in the 1968 Zeffirelli version. During these lines, in the Luhrmann film the halo effect on Juliet is fairly represented, but in the Zeffirelli version, it is in full effect. The rear lighting on Juliet is used to convey innocence because at this time all her emotions and thoughts are out in the open and she is vulnerable, so the lack of halo effect muddles the emotional aspect of Juliet s confessions. Baz Luhrmann uses dark, neutral lighting in the beginning of the balcony scene until Romeo reveals his presence to Juliet and they both fall into the Capulet s pool. There are opposing forces that make this black man suffer and he gets no retribution or any justice for the things that the people accuse him of. Through each of these voices the poem is thoroughly explained and can be analysed in such a way. The forces in this poem is the tenant, landlord, police, and the press. Each one of these forces shows the racial struggles of an innocent black man. The main person in the poem is the tenant, which in the last line tells us, he is black. The tenant is characterized by his slang and his strong dislike for the landlord. The tenant uses slang, contracted words, and nonstandard grammar. This non formal way of English suggests the tenant s separation from the world of convention, represented by the formal way of the police and the press, which appear later in the poem. Cain dives into more controversial territory by having Mildred use men for her own sexual satisfaction.
