The chance events in both Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Oedipus the King serve to further the
plot. In Oedipus the King, Oedipus s meeting and murder of his father fulfills one half of the
prophecy. This event was necessary because causes Oedipus to be able to marry his mother, who

Two Views of Slavery During the time prior to the twentieth century our world accepted slavery
as a normal part of life. Aphra Behn and Phillis Wheatley, both female authors born about 100
years apart, had their own views of slavery and wrote poems and stories about the subject. These
women were physically different, Aphra was a Caucasian, and Phillis was an African American,
and their lives were rather different as well. Aphra was a spy and playwright, who lived the
middle class life and Phillis, was a slave who was taken from her homeland, brought to America,

Although her description makes Oroonoko seem rather stunning, it is a rather disrespectful
description to the native Negro people. Her description makes it sound like slaves are not equal
and due to fact that Oroonoko was a Prince, they did not put him in the same category as the
other slaves and treated him with decency and respect, almost as if it was a double standard. Her
story gets even more confusing when Oroonoko is kidnapped and sold into slavery himself by
the same person that once helped Oroonoko traffic slaves. After he was captured and enslaved,
he is treated humanely by his captor, which seems rather odd since most other slaves were
treated very poorly. He is renamed Caesar (slaves were renamed at that time), I assume for his
strength and nobility. Once at the slave camp, he is received more like a governor than a slave
(Behn 209). He was even given land away from the other slaves, as if to separate him and treat

which paints a very pretty picture, almost like a fairy tale, which again, is in sharp contrast of

references, making it clear that his views are synthesized from research and not strictly from
opinion. The information in presented in a way that it is not overbearing, but theologically sound

lead the reader into his objective. Aiding to the author s credibility is his current professorship on
the subject and the book expounding from the class itself within a seminary. Another strength in

his acknowledgment that there are other contributing factors than the finite opinion of the book. He
presents three different models and then discredits two of them, in favor of the third, self

The Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet was a literary importation introduced by Sir Thomas Wyatt during
the 16th century English Renaissance (Sarker, 39). The Petrarchan sonnet follows an Italian rhyme
scheme. As Wyatt soon discovered, the rhyme schemes used in the Italian sonnet are difficult to
find when writing in English (Sarker, 40). Due to this discrepancy, adaptations of the Italian form
led to the development of the English or Shakespearean sonnet.
Despite structural alterations, the English sonnet upholds Petrarchan conventions of praise in
which the poet addresses the romantic object (Wilcke, Romantic lit. conventions). Within the
Petrarchan tradition, the blazon is a convention used to structure the poet s romantic praise of the
beloved. Within its origins, the French Heralid meaning of the term blazon means coat of arms , or
the idea of a prominent display. The translation of the blazon into poetry uses literary devices such
as metaphors to endearingly catalogue and describe the beloved. It was from the blazon in which
the anti blazon sonnet developed. The anti blazon structure inverts both the typical blazon and
Petrarchan tradition by depicting the beloved in a seemingly unconventional way. William
Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 and Michael Drayton s Sonnet 8 are representations of the anti blazon in
English literature. Sonnet 130 depicts Shakespeare s parody of traditional Petrarchan descriptions
of beauty through the anti blazon. Drayton uses the anti blazon to overturn the Petrarchan
convention of youthfulness.
Within the Petrarchan tradition, a poet would praise the beloved s superlative qualities using
elaborate descriptions of beauty such as golden hair or starry eyes . Using the blazon, the beloved s
attributes would be depicted through metaphorical comparison or conceits, often to elements of
nature. Such comparisons demonstrate that the beloved s attributes are so sublime that they elevate
her to metaphysical proportions she would seem divine and metaphysical. In Sonnet 130 ,
Shakespeare mocks common Petrarchan conceits and rejects describing his beloved using
