Universal Design is a set of principles that allows for curriculum to be developed so that all individuals have equal opportunities to learn. It addresses learner variability through flexible goals, methods, materials, and assessments. The three principles are to provide multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement. Universal Design is implemented in many states and countries to make learning more effective for diverse learners and improve educational outcomes for all students.

What is Universal Design?

A set of principles that allows a curriculum to be developed so
that all individuals have equal opportunities to learn

Necessary because there is no “average” learner

Some learners in schools such as students with disabilities and
those who are “gifted” are being marginalized

UDL helps address learner variability by suggesting flexible
goals, methods, materials, and assessments that empower
educators to meet varied needs

No one representation or way of presenting material will be suitable
for every learner
Learners must be able to express themselves in the way that is best
for them (writing, speech, etc)

Must be multiple ways that learners are motivated to learn (some
might like working alone, some in partners)
