Natural Resource Management:
Soil Health Assessment: Quantifying impact of crop diversification and biological nitrogen
fixation on soil health and nitrogen fertilizer efficiency; Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF):
Evaluating BNF from legumes.
Cropping Systems Management:
Agronomy of Legumes: Evaluating suitable agronomic practices (particularly focused on
disease/pest control via seed treatment; quantification of plant growth habits and synergistic
mixtures. Improved Cultivars: Evaluating varieties of lab lab at multiple locations.
Farming Systems Design:
Multipurpose Crops: Evaluating impact of multi purpose crops (maize and legumes) on
sustainable production of maize based, rain fed cropping systems. New and traditional
options regarding legumes to diversify cropping systems (e.g. pigeon pea, groundnut, lab lab).
Human Condition:
Human Nutrition: Evaluating the opportunities to enhance human nutrition through access
to diversified plant based proteins; Human Health: Surveying opportunities for diversified
food options on human health; Food Safety: Quantified assessment of aflatoxin presence in
farm household food stores.

Extension Approaches and Capacity Building: Organizing and building social capital for
farmers to become business entrepreneurs; Collaborative and Bi-directional Learning:
Collaborating and working with stakeholders and a quantified test of pre and post contrasting
approaches to identify best practices for scaling innovations; Policy Makers: Guiding policy
makers on how to improve field crop sustainable intensification.
6 Geospatial Tools:
Spatial Mapping: High-resolution spatial maps of cropland boundaries using web-based
platform; natural resource management and conflict; Fertilizer Price Mapping: Updated
travel time maps and estimated fertilizer prices based on household surveys and spatial
analyses.
