Types of the signals
Classifications of the Signals
 Continuous and Discrete Time Signals
 Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals
 Deterministic and Random Signals
 Symmetrical and Anti-symmetrical signals
 Energy and Power Signals
Continuous Time Signals
 Signals are represented mathematically as functions
of one or more Independent variables.
 We take an example signal x which is in time
domain, we can show it x(t) as shown in figure.
For example, a speech signal can be
represented mathematically by acoustic
pressure as a function of time . Here in
this figure the sinusoidal signal is
represented.
Discrete Time Signal
 Discrete-time signals are defined only at discrete
times, and consequently, for these signals, the
independent variable takes on only a discrete set of
values.
From the figure, we can say the
value Of the signals we are getting
at specified Time only.
Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals
 A signal is said to be periodic if it is repeated over a
cycle of time or a regular interval of time. Consider a
function f(x) this can be called periodic only if it
satisfies the mathematical expression or condition as
shown below:
 f(x)= f(x+p) , here p is the periodicity of the signal.
 We will take one example for the better
understanding.
Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals
For this signal, f(x) = sin(x) and
the periodicity is p = 2π.
Lets check.
f(x+p) = sin(x+p)
f(x+ 2π)=sin(x+ 2π)=sin(x)
So its proven that after p the
signal is repeating
periodically.
Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals
Non-periodic signals,
whose frequency components
do change over time.
We can say here f(x)=f(x+p), p
is not fix so, it will change and
frequency is variable here in
this signal.
All the sound waves are non-
periodic. Chirp are non-periodic

Types of the Signals- Signals and Systems

  • 2. Classifications of the Signals  Continuous and Discrete Time Signals  Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals  Deterministic and Random Signals  Symmetrical and Anti-symmetrical signals  Energy and Power Signals
  • 3. Continuous Time Signals  Signals are represented mathematically as functions of one or more Independent variables.  We take an example signal x which is in time domain, we can show it x(t) as shown in figure. For example, a speech signal can be represented mathematically by acoustic pressure as a function of time . Here in this figure the sinusoidal signal is represented.
  • 4. Discrete Time Signal  Discrete-time signals are defined only at discrete times, and consequently, for these signals, the independent variable takes on only a discrete set of values. From the figure, we can say the value Of the signals we are getting at specified Time only.
  • 5. Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals  A signal is said to be periodic if it is repeated over a cycle of time or a regular interval of time. Consider a function f(x) this can be called periodic only if it satisfies the mathematical expression or condition as shown below:  f(x)= f(x+p) , here p is the periodicity of the signal.  We will take one example for the better understanding.
  • 6. Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals For this signal, f(x) = sin(x) and the periodicity is p = 2π. Lets check. f(x+p) = sin(x+p) f(x+ 2π)=sin(x+ 2π)=sin(x) So its proven that after p the signal is repeating periodically.
  • 7. Periodic and Non-Periodic Signals Non-periodic signals, whose frequency components do change over time. We can say here f(x)=f(x+p), p is not fix so, it will change and frequency is variable here in this signal. All the sound waves are non- periodic. Chirp are non-periodic
