There are two main types of ecosystems: terrestrial and aquatic. Terrestrial ecosystems include grasslands like savannas and prairies, forests which are divided into tropical rainforests, temperate rainforests, and taigas, deserts, and tundras. Aquatic ecosystems consist of marine ecosystems found in oceans, coral reefs, seas, and estuaries which are salty and freshwater ecosystems including lakes, ponds, rivers, and wetlands which have lower salt concentrations. Ecosystems are classified based on the living and nonliving interactions that occur within them and whether they are found on land or in water.
