Red Blood Cells
—Red blood cells are disc-shaped cells that are
slightly thicker around the edge.
—They contain haemoglobin, which transports
oxygen to all the cells in the body.
—Haemoglobin, which contains iron, gives
blood its red colour.
—This compound is carried to every cell in the
body, where it releases oxygen.
—This oxygen is used by the cells to break
down food molecules and release energy.
ANAEMIA
Anaemia is a common blood disorder.
When a person’s blood does not contain enough
red blood cells or if its haemoglobin content is
lower than normal, the person is said to be
anaemic.
Anaemia reduces the capacity of blood to carry
oxygen.
It can cause a person to look pale and get tired
easily.
White Blood Cells
 White blood cells are
slightly larger than red
blood cells.
They do not have a fixed
shape.
They help the body to fight
against infection by
destroying disease-causing
microorganisms and
harmful foreign substances
that enter the body.
Platelets
Platelet cells form clots to stop
bleeding from wounds and cuts.
A platelet cell is about one-third the
size of a red blood cell.
TYPE OF CELL NUMBER OF CELLS
RBC 5-6 million
WBC 4000-11,000
Platelet 150,000-400,000
