3. Human beings have a complex digestive
system.
Our digestive system is a long tube that
begins at the mouth and ends at the
anus.
This long muscular tube is called the
alimentary canal or gut.
4. MOUTH : Digestion begins in the mouth
where teeth cut and crush food into small
pieces.
OESOPHAGUS (Food pipe): It is a muscular
tube that transports food from the throat to
the stomach.
STOMACH: It is the major organ of the human
digestive system. It stores and churns food.
5. SMALL INTESTINE : Most food is digested in
the small intestine. This is where nutrients are
released and taken into the blood to be used
by the body.
LARGE INTESTINE : Water from digested food
is absorbed in the large intestine. Any leftover
waste forms faeces.
6. RECTUM : Faeces are stored in the final part
of large intestine, called the rectum, before
leaving the body.
ANUS : The anus is the opening at the end of
the digestive tract and faeces passes out
through this end.
7. Apart from these organs, glands like salivary
glands, liver and pancreas also play an
important role in the process of digestion.
• Salivary glands----secretes saliva.
• Liver---secretes bile (breakdown of fat).
• Pancreas-------secretes pancreatic juice
(breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and
fats).
