4. Some Terminology Twitter - a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweet - text-based post of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's followers. Tweeple – Twitter people, Twitter members, Twitter users. Tweetup - Twitter meetups. RT / Retweet – when you repeat a tweet from someone else. Can be considered citing a source. 5. Why should I care? Create an account and find out. Experience Twitter! Share ideas and events. Spread your message easily to multiple devices. Connect with people and ideas. Bring in new users who may never find your services. Think creatively and be the trend setter. Make Twitter whatever you want it to do or be. Discovery tool! Follow trends via #hashtags, twitturly.com, twitscoop.com, search.twitter.com, etc. and retweet them and/or build on them. Can be used to help circulate news before major news outlets do it. Find people you know and follow them. Look at people they know and if they are interesting follow them too. There are tons more that you can do with Twitter. So, what are you doing? Or why are you doing this?

7. No! Twitter helps share and connect people with ideas that you find interesting. You can also find people that may will help you discover new things! Kind of like a library, right? Hmmm … Clive Thompson (AKA, @pomeranian99) mentions “ambient awareness” in that “each little update — each individual bit of social information — is insignificant on its own, even supremely mundane. But taken together, over time, the little snippets coalesce into a surprisingly sophisticated portrait of your friends’ and family members’ lives, like thousands of dots making a pointillist painting” – filled with blended color and meaning. Twitter Statistics Nielsen Online shows that Twitter grew a massive 1,928% in the US from June ’08 to June ’09, now reaching a total of 21 million monthly unique visitors. 5% of Twitter users account for 75% of all activity. Twitter users spent an average of 31 minutes, 17 seconds on the site in June 09. This excludes users of clients like TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop. Twitter has yet to catch on with Generation Y users. Only 22 % of this group say they use Twitter. 10. What are #hashtags? .org/ A hashtag is a “convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets.” They are basically tags to help better organize tweets. 15. I tweet, therefore I am. I was writing a literature review recently and Twhirl beeped a quote that I actually used in the review. Serendipitous discovery! I follow people who interest me, so I don’t get too overwhelmed with useless tweets. I “attend” conferences even though I am not really there by following hashtags (e.g., #ALA2009). I send notes to myself using TweetCall. I find fascinating quotes and tweet them and I include a #quotes hashtag so other Twitterers can enjoy them too. @cmairn Random thoughts …
