Analyze:
My 5th grade class consists of 20 students, 9 girls, and 11 boys. There are 2 African American children
and 1 Hispanic child, the rest are middle class Americans.
State Objective:
The children will be able to explain what a tornado is and what causes it by watching videos, creating a
tornado in a bottle and writing a brief paper about them. They will do this with 100% accuracy by the
end of the day.
Select Methods:
A poster will be provided, in which it will show the ways the tornado is formed. The students will watch
a video demonstrating how to create a tornado in a bottle, then be divided into 5 groups and build their
own tornado in a bottle. They will also be given an opportunity to follow a twitter account, which is all
about tornadoes.
Utilize Material:
-
I will provide a poster that shows the formation of a tornado.
I will provide a video on the computer that demonstrates how to build a tornado in a bottle.
I will provide the bottles, water, and connector for the tornado in a bottle activity.
I will show the children how to access the twitter account in which they will read and review.
I will allow time for the children to write a brief paper about some of the facts that they learned
from reading the twitter account.
I will make sure that everyone is on track by walking around the class and answering questions
related to the topic.
Require Learner Participation:
Students will be given time to observe the poster and discuss it with other children. They will be
divided into 5 groups and will have the opportunity to create a tornado in a bottle after watching
the video demonstration. They will also be given a chance to follow a twitter account all about
tornadoes and then write a brief paper. During this time, I will keep everyone on track by walking
around and allowing them to ask questions.
Evaluate and Revise:
Students will be evaluated on the group project of building the tornado in a bottle. They will be
given the chance, as a group, to explain how the process works. They will also inform the class what
they learned about tornadoes while reading the twitter account and writing their paper.
