ASSURE Assignment
Analyze Learners:
The students involved in this lesson are in a 1st grade Special Education
classroom. Thesestudents range from having a mild to severe case of ADHD,
which can cause problems to occurduring instruction. They come from
different cultural backgrounds, 70% of the students arewhite, 20% are African
American, and 10% are Hispanic students.
State Objectives:
My 1st grade class will recite and describe the 12 months of the year by
singing along to“Months of the Year” by Greg and Steve, as well as doing an
activity that incorporates theseasons and holidays with the months. The class
will review as a group and individually with100% accuracy by the end of a 5
day week.
Select methods, Media, and Materials:
One method that will be applied in the classroom is an audio device that has
thecapability to play CDs. This was chosen to provide the students with
access to hearing “Monthsof the Year” by Greg Scelsa, in which also gave
them an opportunity to sing along. A print offsheet of the words that go along
with the song will be available as well. This will provide thestudents with an
audio and visual guide to follow. The second method will be the use of
posterboards for each month, as well as printouts of the seasons and popular
American holidays. Thechildren will be instructed to color the picture of their
favorite season, as well as a holiday. Then they will be coached on which
month the season and holidays fall under, and instructed toplace the printouts
on the poster boards.
Utilize Media and Materials:
Preview the Materials: The teacher will preview the CD player as well as the
CD thatcontains the song being used. The poster board and printouts will be
revised to makesure there are no errors or setbacks for the children.
Prepare the Materials: The teacher will print off the words that go along with
the songto provide each student with a copy, as well as the printouts of the
seasons andholidays.
Prepare the Environment: This activity is a group endeavor, so the teacher will
set uptheir desks in a circle. Each desk will contain a copy of the print off
2. sheet of the song. The CD player will be set up in the middle of the circle,
providing access for the teacherto change it when needed. While in the group,
the students will be given the print offsheets of their favorite holidays and
seasons. The teacher will allow them time to colorand discuss the seasons
and holidays.
Prepare the Learners: To help prepare the students, the teacher will explain
theobjective to them, as well as demonstrate the activity and what is to be
expected.
Provide the Learning Experience: The teacher will sing along with the song,
as well aswith the students, and encouraging them in the process. The
teacher will also color theirfavorite holiday and season, then place them on
the poster board as inquired.
Require Learner Participation:
While in the large group, the teacher will review and practice with each
student on themonths of the year. Students will be able to continue to sing
along with the music, whilecoloring the handouts of the seasons and holidays.
The teacher practices with each individualstudent, giving students an
opportunity for help if needed.
Evaluate and Revise:
To successfully evaluate the media and material used for this activity, the
students arequestioned about the months of the year and if they are able to
recite them. This is todetermine if the music and the handouts of the seasons
and holidays helped them learn thematerial that was provided
