The Cause, Effect and Possible Solution to Traffic Congestion on Nigeria Road...inventionjournals
Due to increase in population and the attraction of human activities into urban region which in
turn leads to the growth of vehicle ownership and use, there is demand for road space which has led to increase
in the number of public transport operation. Consequently, the demand for road space is greater than the
supply because the rate of provision of transport facilities is less than the rate of growth of vehicle ownership
and use which result into traffic congestion. Traffic congestion is the impedance of vehicles imposed on each
other due to speed-flow relationship in conditions where the use of transport system approaches capacity.
Traffic congestion in Nigeria, taking Basorun-Akobo Road in Ibadan Oyo State as a case study has been
analysed using experimental and theoretical approaches. These involve traffic counting and delay survey. In
order to carry out effective research work on the case study road, the method adopted were traffic counting and
traffic delay survey. The effect of traffic congestion on the study area are Waste of time, Delay movement,
Accident, Inability to forecast travel time, Fuel consumption, Road rage and environmental pollution. Possible
solutions to traffic congestion on the case study area is to: Dualize the Road, Provide Adequate Parking Space,
Construct proper Drainage and Install Traffic Control Devices.

Pollution Monitoring System using Arduino and various gas sensorUtkarsh Jaiswal
Now-a-days air pollution is one of the most important concern of the world. Air pollution may evolve from anthropogenic or natural sources. Air pollutants of atmospheric substances like CO, CO2, SO2, NO2, and O3 suspended particulate matter (SPM), repairable suspended particulate matter (RSPM), and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) have a great effect on the people health. Most of the major cities in developing countries and most cities of the developed countries are suffering from it. Thus to develop a real time air quality and pollution monitoring system is critical. We have developed an arduino based air pollution detector which combined a small-sized, minimum-cost sensor to an arduino micro-controller unit.
Air Quality Monitoring System Using Wireless Sensor Networksijtsrd
In real-time accurate and sensitive data collection under varying temperature and humidity microenvironments. Additionally, because the velocities of the particles change under varying temperature and humidity conditions according to the Ideal Gas Law, it is important for the system to be examined separately under each variable condition in a controlled manner. For instance, the water particles produced under changing humidity can interfere with the dust particle measurements in the optical sensor, and as a result, increase the sampled particle concentration. Another inaccurate reading can be caused when the air temperature increases, as the velocity of the dust particles that pass across the optical sensor increase. Consequently, the wireless sensor was calibrated by observing the results of the professional Dylos and the wireless sensor separately under these varying conditions. Then, we conducted two different tests to verify the functionality and durability of the sensor. These tests were performed for 24 hours both indoors and outdoors to test the reliability and accuracy of the wireless sensors against the Dylos air quality monitoring. In this system, we proposed wireless sensor network to monitor the temperature , humidity and also the gas leakage of industrial applications .By introducing this we can monitor the sensor parameter values in wireless communication and also we can upload the sensor parameter values in web portal. For Wireless communication we are using here is WSN, which helps to collect all nodes data's and can be monitored in PC and can also upload in web portal so that for anywhere in this world we can monitor these conditions. ABSTRACT
Internal combustion engine vehicles emits on average around 143 grams of carbon dioxide CO2 per kilometer, according to the EEA (European Environment Agency), these values are on well-maintained roads. But if you travel on poor quality roads, the amount of CO2 emissions will be higher compared to the 143 grams that you originally emitted.
That means you will emit an additional amount of greenhouse gases depending on the state of the road. But how much is this additional amount of CO2? This is the objective of this research.
The road quality is directly related to fuel consumption and therefore to carbon dioxide emissions. If you drive at a constant speed on an uneven road surface, the vehicle's suspension system produces higher movement due to these roughness, in other words, the mechanical work dissipated in the vehicle's suspension system is higher compared to a surface without roughness, that means higher energy dissipation, affecting rolling resistance, the fact of needing more energy to move means that all the mechanical work is compensated by vehicle engine power, resulting in a higher fuel consumption and therefore higher emission of greenhouse gases.
In this sense, in order to determine the additional emissions of carbon dioxide, the philosophy and mathematical models of the "thermodynamics of excessive fuel consumption" will be used.

Carbon Monoxide Monitoring System Based On Arduino-GSM for Environmental Moni...IJERA Editor
In recent years with tremendous progress in technology and growth in demand for vehicles, an individual fizzle to look after awful factors that occur due to improper maintenance of vehicles results in increase in air pollution and which results in disturbing environmental condition all over the world, that tends to raise global warming. In this paper “Carbon Monoxide Monitoring System Based on Arduino-GSM for Environmental Monitoring Application” is a system which detects the Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas coming out of a vehicle which is displayed on vehicle itself, so when the level of CO increases alerts will be sent to the owner of vehicle regarding maintenance of vehicle and if action is not taken regarding CO the vehicle is made to stop and later allowed to start the vehicle after given period. This cycle is continued to keep the CO free environment and also reduce human efforts to monitor each and every vehicle. The repetitively breaking down of a vehicle causes the owner to take serious action for reducing the CO of his vehicle.

Traffic Jam, Pollution and Energy Consuption
1.
2.
3. Traffic congestion is a condition on road networks that
occurs as use increases, and is characterized by slower
speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular
queuing.
When traffic demand is great enough that the
interaction between vehicles slows the speed of the
traffic stream, this results in some congestion.
When vehicles are fully stopped for periods of time, this
is colloquially known as a traffic jam or traffic snarl-up.
4. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants
into the natural environment that causes
adverse change.
Pollution can take several forms like air
pollution, water pollution, noise pollution etc.
They have an adverse effect on our
environment and also on human health .
5. Energy is consumed by us in many different ways as
shown in the pie chart.
The only thing that bothers is that we keep
consuming all our energy resources which
is limited and we will
soon run out of resources.
The only solution is to find alternative sources of
energy and ensure sustainable energy for all.
6. When one is stuck in a traffic jam and he/she does
not turn off his/her engine, there will automatically
be more energy loss as fuels undergo combustion
rapidly due to “turned on” engines.
When the fuels undergo combustion, they release
harmful gases as an external product of the chemical
reaction.
These harmful gases go into the atmosphere, thus
resulting in air pollution.
7. This is how our topic is interlinked:

9. There are two causes for traffic jam:
Recurrent causes
Non-recurrent causes
10. The three main reasons:
Insufficient capacity of the existing road network
due to the annual increase in traffic.
Privatization, due to more number of private
vehicles and insufficiency of the existing public
transport system.
Ill – timed and unorganized traffic systems.
Common timing for all offices, schools, colleges,
universities, etc…
12. The five main reasons:
Incidents and accidents
Road maintenance and construction near
work zones.
Bad Weather conditions
Special events like political rallies, elections
etc.
Emergency situations
14. Time loss
Economic impacts and productivity loss

19. A period of 90 days, is sufficient to alter the
DNA of people. It may also lead to
inflammation of certain parts of the brain.
Intensification of electrical activity in the
brain may lead to deterioration of behavior,
personality, logic and decision-making and high
levels of stress.
20. Exposure and inhalation of carbon monoxide
can result in psychological problems.
Once inhaled, the gas binds itself to the
haemoglobin which reduces the volume of
oxygen that reach the heart and brain, thereby
affecting the brain.
22. It jeopardizes a person's judgment and
reflex reactions.
It causes stress, anxiety and instant fear.
Mental alertness, capacities, stress
handling capacity and patience get
reduced.
23.
24.
25. It is a momentary instance of anger or an effect
of Intermittent Explosive Disorder (extreme
expressions of anger).
Road rage is unhealthy outbursts of anger
when in a traffic congestion.
26. Drivers who suffer from it get scared of the slow
crawl of traffic jam.
27. Neurons are the nerve cells which communicate the
impulse of the central nervous system.
Air pollution deteriorates the blood-brain barrier,
cerebral cortex and glial cells, which causes severe
long-term disorders.
28. Global warming
Global warming is now an accepted fact by the
world’s scientific community. The greatest influence
appears to be the growth in emissions of CO2, the
well known greenhouse gas.
29. CO2 emissions due to road transport are influenced
by:
Vehicle technology
Fuel and how it is used
Type of vehicle and how it is driven
Efficiency of the road network and its management
The traveller’s choice of means of transport.
30. Transport sector emissions grew by 26 %( 820 million
tonnes) between 1990 and 2003. This trend has
continued and is expected to further increase in the
future.
31. The global demand for oil is expected to increase by
38% from 2008 to 2030.
The prospect of unstable and uncertain future oil
supplies in the future will lead to increase in the
prices of petroleum and diesel.

42. It seems that rising population in china has
caused a lot of problems for efficient time
spendings and transportation uses.
However, upcoming hi tech transportation
system called ”straddling bus” helps us to use
time efficiently and less time to be stuck on
traffic.

48. Straddling bus is completely powered by municipal
electricity and solar energy system.
The setting is called relay direct current electrification.
The bus itself is electrical conductor, two rails built on
top to allow the charging post to run along with the
bus, the next charging post will be on the rails before the
earlier one leaves, that is why we call it relay charging.
It is new invention, not available yet in other places.
49. The set here is super capacitor, a device that
can charge, discharge and store electricity
quickly. The power it stores during the stop can
support the bus till the next stop where
another round of charging takes place,
achieving zero toxic gas throughout the
process.

the bus, that is to keep those high cars or trucks away
from entering the tunnel.
Using laser ray to scan, cars get too close to the passage

Inside the bus, there are turning lights that indicate a
the bus is intending to make a turn to warn the cars
inside.
Also radar scanning system is embedded on the walls to
warn cars from getting too close to the bus wheels.
