What is distance learning?
Learning that occurs when a teacher and learner(s) are separated:
by physical distance
Technology (i.e., voice, video, data, and print), is often combined
with face-to-face communication, to bridge the instructional
gap.
These types of programs can provide adults with a chance to
undertake vocational education and training and reach those
disadvantaged by limited time, distance or physical disability,
and enhance the competence of workers at their places of
employment.

Research comparing distance education to
traditional face-to-face instruction indicates
that teaching and studying at a distance can be
as effective as traditional instruction, when…
1. The method and technologies used are
appropriate to the instructional tasks
2. There is student-to-student interaction
3. There is timely teacher-to- student feedback
(see Moore & Thompson, 1990; Verduin &
Clark, 1991).
