Changing Structure of Watch Industry
SWISS WATCH MARKET
In 1970s the Swiss industry produced around 75 million units per year as compared to 25 million units
in 1940s.
Since 1966, when the Swiss Government s restriction on sale and acquisition of watch companies
lapsed, the industry experienced a crescendo of mergers, bringing down the number of firms to around
1000.
In 1971, ASUAG , the super trust combined the assembling firms selling seven different brands into
the General Watch Holding Company. This move forged important new financial and managerial links
between the component manufacturing and assembling sectors of the watch industry.
By 1971 almost three quarters of all Swiss watch exports were accounted for by eight watch making
groups.

manufacturing industry. In fact, only two U.S. watch companies, Bulova and Timex, were involved in
any domestic watch production.
Since the beginning, U.S. companies have struggled to cope with the labour requirements of
watchmaking.
Some U.S. watch sellers never tried; from the start imported finished watches or movements and
simply put them in watch cases here. Other firms tackled the problem by locating at least part of their
production overseas. Bulova and Gruen, for example, established their own manufacturing plants in
Switzerland in the early years of the 1980s.
After the Second World, jeweled lever watches dominated the U.S. market.
Then during the 1950s and early 1960s the situation changed drastically. Timex first stormed the low
price end of the watch market and later moved up into the middle price range. At the same time
marginal Swiss producers flooded the U.S. market with inexpensive pin lever and jeweled lever
watches making price competition all the more severe.
In 1960s the Japanese began to carve out their piece of the U.S. market. On top of this, the mass
merchandising revolution of the 1950s threw the traditional watch distribution system, sales through
jewelers and fine department stores, into chaos. To survive in a market dominated by price
competition, one after another U.S. watch company gave up on domestic watch manufacturing until,
by 1970 there were only two survivors Bulova and Timex.
Throughout the 1960s and into

Descriptive Essay About Roller Coaster
A Rollercoaster Ride
I was standing in line with my sister and cousin waiting to get on the Viper . We were at Six Flags
having already been in the long line an hour and a half. We all went on our favorite rides, then we
decided to go on the roller coaster. This was going to be my very first ever roller coaster in my life.
Then the rollercoaster conductor told us to get in the coaster. I jumped in, put my seatbelt on and
listened to the safety precautions. Then the conductor pressed the button and we were off.
My sister, Anna, said in a soft voice, so she would not wake up my brother Drew, Wake up. Wake up
Andrew. We need to pick up Melissa.
I was still drowsing, but I was awake. I got my clothes on, and then went to get my phone and ... Show

Anna told me after one of the rides, Hey, we should ride a roller coaster.
I do not want to ride one though. They look big and scary. I responded
Just trust me. It will be fun. My sister said.
So we all decided to go on the Viper and we went to the area where it was located and we hopped in
line. It said on the board a 1 and a half hour wait, so luckily I still had battery on my phone. Time
passed and we got onto the roller coaster. I got in the very front of the coaster and put my seatbelt on. I
was as nervous as I would ever be in my life. I was sweating because of how nervous I was. The voice
told us about the precautions of the roller coaster that I had already heard a million times before
standing in line.
Then the roller coaster jerked forward and we were off. We went up slowly and I was ready for a big
drop. I closed my eyes and then the roller coaster suddenly went down. I had this weird feeling inside
of my gut. It was extremely fast and really high up. It took multiple turns and drops and I closed my
eyes for all of the drops. Then the roller coaster suddenly went slower and we were at the start of the
ride. I got off and met with my sister and cousin.
See it was not that bad. My sister told me.
Nope, I am never riding a roller coaster ever again in my life. I responded back.
We rode some more rides after the coaster and then we had to meet up with

Pros And Cons Of Whistleblowers
Dispositions such as Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) and Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA)
preditcs negative attitudes toward disadvantaged individuals in certain organizations and society
(Asbrock, Sibley, Duckitt, 2010; Burnell, 2016; Duckitt, 2006). For instance, SDO and RWA hold
negative attitudes toward working women especially who seek out hierarchy favoring positions
(Altemeyer, 1998; Ekehammar, Akrami Araya, 2000; Sidanius, Pratto, Bobo, 1996) and negative racial
attitudes in the organization (Altemeyer, 1998; Lambert Chasteen, 1997). Perhaps, these dispostions
might create negative attitudes toward whistleblowers. Since whistleblowers harm their own
organization by exposing unethical practices, then, they might be perceived ... Show more content on

Altemeyer believed that these three components are thoroughly intertwined and wrote the items for his
scale without trying to create separate sets of items for each component (Altemeyer, 1996). This scale
has gained great popularity. However, one shortcoming of the scale is that it does not provide separate
scores for the three components of the construct (Duckitt, Bizumic, Krauss, Heled, 2010; Funke,
2005). In organizational context, employees with high RWA might create negative attitude towards co
employees seen as threatening in the workplace s structure and order that defy the authorities values

Analysis of Statistical Data
Statistics In the Smith, et al (2006) study, 26 patients were used. They all had COPD that was stable,
and they all complained of coughing. Their age, mean FEV, and smoking history were all accounted
and controlled for (Smith, et al, 2006). Methods used involved a cough challenge test, sound
recordings of their cough day and night, and a questionnaire that involved their perceived quality of
life (Smith, et al, 2006). The coughs were actually manually counted and then translated to coughs per
hour. The cough seconds per hour was quantified based on the number of seconds in each recorded
hour that contained a cough. The overall median time that was spent coughing was calculated to be 7.5
cough seconds for every hour, although this lessened considerably at night (Smith, et al, 2006). The
subjective cough scores were taken into account and compared with the actual cough seconds per
hour. It was found that the study participants often thought that they spent more time coughing than
what the data indicated to b accurate (Smith, et al, 2006). By looking at the statistical data used
(median cough seconds per hour), it can be seen that people with COPD do not (on average) spend
that many seconds per hour coughing. However, because of the disruptive nature of coughing
repeatedly throughout that hour, these individuals often think they spend much more time coughing
than they actually do (Smith, et al, 2006). This was evidenced by the fact that a subjective measure of

Dr. W Edwards Deming
Dr. W. Edwards Deming was a well respected man because of his philosophy of management. He
viewed management as a tool for success in any organization. Dr. Deming was an expert statistician
and during World War II he helped the United States in its efforts to improve the quality of war
materials. After World War II, Dr. Deming was invited by Japan to help rebuild. Japan had this
reputation of producing cheap imitation products. Through the years and many visits by Dr. Deming,
Japan was able to produce quality products. He is highly respected in Japan and respected also in the
United States. Dr. Deming views on management is still understood and still used today. For everyone

Deming believe that people want a sense of joy and pride in there work. Money is needed for living
but joy and pride is valued more. They want recognition more than the dollar. Along with Dr. Deming,
Herzberg believed that money is no motivator also. I know many people feel if they got paid more
than they would do more at their job. There are many who feel they are over worked and not paid
enough. They think if they were to receive more money, they would do a better job. Dr. Deming and
Herzberg would disagree. They would say that those employees do not like there job and regardless
what one would pay them, they still would not put forth their best effort because money is not a
motivator. Dr. Edward Deming also believed that a firm should want to have strong competitors. His
reasoning for saying this is to drive out fear. Better competition leads to bigger and better expansion of
the market. Customers needs are determined by what the firm makes it. We did not ask for electricity,
but we got it anyway. Now, most people would not even dare to live without it. Although many would
disagree with Dr. Deming and say that it would be more beneficial for the company to be in a market
with no strong competitors, Dr. Deming would agree with that statement. It would be good for the
company but for the economy as a whole, it would not be good for. Even though these views are not
commonly accepted, one may begin to understand them if they are looked at in a

Vietnam War Ethical Analysis
No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon, 1985.
Since the Vietnam War, there has been almost fifty years of remembrance, various readings, and the
publication of military documents. However, Richard Nixon s quote still has a certain veracity. The
United States has fought in many wars, but none have compelled Americans to question our motives
like the Vietnam War. The United States should not have gotten involved in Vietnam, because it was
illegal, unjustified, and unethical.
The legality of the Vietnam War has been brought into question frequently since the Gulf of Tonkin
incident of 1964. Original United States documents blame the two separate attacks on United States
aircrafts and vessels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While many believe that the United States was fighting against communism, and communism should
be wiped off the entire face of this planet, one has to ask himself the question: is it really worth it?
However, the Vietnam War was not just botched. From the beginning, American military officials
brainwashed their soldiers into carelessly slaughtering millions of Vietnamese for the crime of being
communists. If any Vietnamese hesitated for a millisecond on listening to an order, he was shot. If any
Vietnamese was in simply in the way, he was shot. Aside from Vietnamese casualties, more 58,000
American soldiers died in this forsaken war. According to BBC News, the amount of ammunition fired
per soldier was roughly twenty six times greater in Vietnam than during World War II. Additionally,
by the end of the war, the United States had released the equivalent of about 640 Hiroshima sized
atomic bombs on Vietnam. This begs the question, what other things happened in this conflict that
hundreds of Vietnam War novels have conveniently hidden from the American public? Rape, torture,
imprisonment, pillaging and burning of villages, and starvation are just a few. According to Mother
Jones, on August 31, 1969, a young Vietnamese girl was kidnapped, held at gunpoint, brutally gang
raped, and eventually murdered by United States soldiers. Her full story was told in the book
Casualties of War by Daniel Lang, one of the few exceptions to all the patriotic Vietnam War books
out there. Even more hidden from public scrutiny were crimes that United States soldiers committed
against other United States soldiers. A document from the National Archives tells the story of a man
called Curtis, who was viciously raped by three fellow GI s. His story is as follows: Curtis was feeling
sick that late summer day and wouldn t drink with his hootch mates, so they pounced on him, held his
mouth open, and poured whisky down his throat. When he

Christianity Protestant Reformer Research Paper
Christianity: Protestant Reformer Martin Luther
Martin Luther, born into the Catholic Church in 1483, is considered to be the father of Protestantism. 1
Luther was a devout man who dedicated himself to the study of the bible; in addition to being a
Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Wittenberg, he was also a priest and a monk. He
spent a lot of his time focusing on what one could do to earn eternal salvation as it was written about
in the Bible. This was especially troubling to him given the actions of his colleagues at the University
of Wittenberg and his fellow priests and monks. He felt the actions of many of those in the Church that
he loved were both immoral and corrupt, and especially in the midst of his own struggles with the idea
of salvation, these actions troubled him deeply. 2 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had issues with abuses of power amongst clergy, especially with regard to church finances. He
disliked the idea of indulgences, which involved members of the congregations paying priests and
other leaders for abolition of their sins, effectively bribing church leaders for their own salvation.
More than this, spiritual merit was attached to donations made to the church, and masses were able to
be purchased for the dead. The University of Whittenberg held many sacred relics, including hairs said
to have been from the Virgin Mary and the crown of thorns placed on Jesus head during crucifixion.
Rather than cherishing these items for their religious worth, they were sold. 3
Because of these things, Martin Luther was raged with a fierce and agitated conscience . 4 After
intense study, Luther followed the traditional method of protesting within the Catholic church he
nailed his complaints to the Church door and invited them to meet with him. Because of his refusal to
take back these complaints, and despite his intention to stay in the church, he was excommunicated in
1521.

Modern Desalinating Sea Water
Desalination has been used for thousands of years Greek sailors boiled water to evaporate fresh water
away from the salt and Romans used clay filters to trap salt. Today s sophisticated methods still
generally use the concepts of distillation or filtration. The process of desalinating sea water to make it
drinkable has a long and rich history. However, the first large scale modern desalination process to
appear was multi stage flash distillation (MSF) during the mid 20th century in the USA (1955).
Furthermore, although multi effect distillation (MED) had been discovered and had the potential to be
more efficient than MSF, it took a while longer to make the MED process efficient on an industrial
scale and this did not occur until 1959 when

The Stigma Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Despite the stigma surrounding embryonic stem cell research, there are many positives that outweigh
the negatives in medical and scientific settings. Due to the knowledge of this, continued funding and
support is critical for the advancement of these therapies and science as a whole. Diseases that can be
aided by unabating financial and moral support are but not limited to, spinal cord injury, heart disease,
parkinson s disease, alzheimer s and Lou Gehrig s disease, more commonly known as ALS. Funding
via the government was passed into law in 2008 by President Barack Obama. As the election comes
upon us it is important to keep in mind that the continued federal funding for embryonic is at stake.
Embryonic stem cells are cells found in the human body that have not yet differentiated, or specialised
meaning that they have not yet received the specific instructions to become a specific cell. They can
be manipulated to turn into any kind of cell, for example, new skin cells for someone with melanoma.
Stem cells are found in the placenta, umbilical blood, fat tissue, bone marrow and mew embryos.
Embryonic stem cells have an advantage over the other sources of stem cells because the cells have
less exposure to the outside world and are relatively easy to access, in situations like in vitro
fertilization.
Scientists and researchers believe they could potentially treat a wide array of human conditions and
diseases, such as spinal cord injury, type one

other management decisions; versus BRMC who was participative of their staff.
The role in this case study will be Pat Herman, MHA, FACHE. He was the CEO of PRMC and was

The Characteristics Of The Eastern Grey Kangaroo And Red...
What s your favorite animal? May not be the kangaroo because you might not know much about them.
The Kangaroo is an animal that really wouldn t pop up into your mind when people ask you that
question. Kangaroos might not be a big hyped up animal but, they re pretty interesting because they
have many features that some other animals don t. When people think about the Kangaroo what comes
to there mind is the Eastern grey kangaroo and Red Kangaroo. Why people think of the grey kangaroo
is because it s a larger species. The kangaroo s diet, the way they survive when danger s get in the

marsupials that are only found in Australia that also have pouches. They have muscular tails, strong
back legs, long pointed ears, and short fur.
This mammal is different for the reason that they have pouches. The females have mammary glands
that they carry the young ones until they re old enough to be on their own. When the mother gives
birth the baby crawls up the mother s body immediately to enter the pouch. When the baby is inside
the pouch it attaches to one of the four teats, the reason for that is so it enlarges and to hold it inside in
place. When the joey or baby is born it weighs less than a gram also it s only about 2 cm long. Before
the joey is born the mother makes sure to lick the pouch to make sure its clean before the baby enters
it. Eastern Grey Kangaroos are the most common

Power in Congress Essay
Power In and Over Congress
I feel the system is biased because there are inequalities among the representation and participation of
interest groups and constituents in the political system. Unfortunately, poor and uneducated citizens
aren t as organized as interest groups, lobbyists and PACs because they lack the money, resources and
connections necessary to influence congress members on legislative bills. It is evident that, businesses,
interest groups and labor unions are spending more than $100 million a month to lobby the federal
government (Associated Press, SFC, 3/7/98). The actual population of interest groups in Washington
surely reflects that there is a class bias in the membership of interest groups (JBG).

political campaigns, compared to donors and PACs.

Wayne, Lasser, Miller and others tend to agree that lobbyists and PACs have a great amount of
influence over congress members because they may have direct connections and give campaign
contributions. Recently, the airlines industry convinced congress to pass a $15 billion aid package it

The Biography Without Bias In Let The Trumpet Sound
The Biography Without Bias Throughout history, there have been attempts to tell the stories of
important people in history. These attempts, while depicting a view of an individual, are normally
filled with extreme bias towards or against the specific person. Although some may attempt to argue
that the Stephen Oates was biased towards Martin Luther King Jr., the truth is that within the novel
Let the Trumpet Sound, Stephen B. Oates uses an explanatory tone to articulate and clarify every
detail about the life and political strategies of MLK Jr. This was done so that the people who read his
book will be educated with an unbiased view of one the of the most impactful people in American
history. Stephen Oates, through the start of the book, detailed how he was going to and had written the
book. From the very start of the novel, he know that there would be flaws and was very specific about
how he would confront the flaws that were in King s life: If I uncovered human frailties in King and
how could I not? I would try to understand them, not use them to invite the readers to an execution.
(xii). However, Oates, while not always wanting to show the pits in King s life, was honor bound to do
so. He looked back on this biography by stating I had, I think, been fair, but forthright in dealing with
King s other flaws and failings the biographer is honor bound to depict a person whole... (xx). Stephen

Carpenters have many tasks, and it is important that they carry them out.
Skills Many different types of skills are required to be a carpenter. In order to be a successful worker,
they have to have good math problems. Most of the time, workers have to cut and shape materials to
fit in perfectly, which requires math. Another important part is that they have to make them quick. If a
person is slow, then everybody else can be waiting for them. That would slow the process down, and
they may get laid off to get more training. Manual dexterity is a very significant part of carpentry.
People have to have good eye hand coordination. If someone is too clumsy, they can possibly injure
someone. They have to be able to handle high powered tools and machines. Another thing a person
needs is good stamina. Most of the time, workers have to lift heavy equipment and materials. Being
strong will keep one from getting an injury. Having good problem solving skills is important too.
Sometimes, plans change. They will need to figure out how to solve problems, and modify building
plans. A big thing that carpenters need to know about is raw materials and the costs and delivery of
them. Knowing these can make big difference in expenses when working on a project. One thing
carpenters are always working with: tools. There are many different types of tools. In order to be a
carpenter is that you need to know about the different types of tools

Extracurricular Activities Essay
Extracurricular Activities
Research was performed on the claim of fact that students involved in extracurricular activities receive
higher grades than those not involved in activities. This topic was studied because high school budgets
are meager, and the administrations of these schools want to spend the money efficiently.
Consequently, funding for extracurricular activities may be decreased. This report examines the
correlation between extracurricular activities and academic performance.
Scope
The scope of the investigation only includes high school students and the relationship between their
involvement in activities and their academic performance. Some collegiate level studies were used
since the benefits of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first paper entitled High School Extracurricular Activities and College Grades by Mary Rombokas
studies the relationship between high academic marks and involvement in extracurricular activities.
This article includes a survey performed by Rombokas on this subject. The second article referenced
was Student Perceptions of the Intercollegiate Athletic Program at a Community College by Judith S.
Berson. This is a study on how participating on a collegiate level softball team affected the team
members grades.
Key Points
The key points that will be made in this claim of fact are that students involved in extracurricular
activities receive better grades than those who are not involved in extracurricular activities. In
addition, activities improve the overall student. Therefore, they help students to receive better grades
by teaching them character building lessons, teaching them lifelong skills, saving some at risk students
who would possibly drop out of school, and helping students develop social skills.
Academics
Mary Rombokas performed a study of college aged students who were involved in extracurricular
activities in high school to discover if there was in fact a correlation between involvement in activities
and academic achievement. She concluded after questioning two hundred ninety two college

Cezanne Vs Matisse
Introduction
Henry Matisse s Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) and Picasso s Les Demoiselles d Avignon are
considered as great artworks of modern art. The both are inspired by postimpressionism and also
broken the old style that is depicted by Cezanne. In this essay, I would like to argue how the two are
inspired by Cezanne art piece and how eminence they are.
Paul Cezanne s The Large Bathers
Cézanne got rid of the traditional presentation of paintings that is point on the space and colors. And
he deliberately followed firm format than changing colors. He also reduces the basic essentials of all
natural things to express with the circle, cylinder or cone. By so doing, we say this kind of artists are

prostitution is from Manet s Olympia, or Cezanne s painting. But the landscape is not the same

than the domain of the single figure. That was depicted by emotional and intellectual control.
In Conclusion, Matisse and Picasso s painting not only were not inspired by the Cezanne s The Large
Bathers but also broke the old rule through their appealing quality form and style. Cezanne is
considered as a Post Impressionists, Matisse was a Fauvist, which focus on emotion expressing colors,
and Picasso created a multi figure composition in the early of 21st century

Bookkeeping and Record Keeping Basics
Bookkeeping and Record Keeping Basics
Adapted from content excerpted from the American Express® OPEN Small Business Network
Proper bookkeeping is important to sustaining and expanding a business. Without it, you run the risk
of hitting cash flow crunches, wasting money, and missing out on opportunities to expand. When you
are devising or revising your bookkeeping routine, remember that the purpose of bookkeeping is to
help you manage your business and to enable tax agencies to evaluate your business activity. As long
as your bookkeeping achieves both of these objectives, it can and should be as simple as possible.
The general guidelines here outline what you must take care of and provide ideas for how to keep your

Keep a log of each category of expense, for tax purposes and write yourself a check for the total. Write
cash reimbursable in your check register to differentiate this from taxable income. Alternatively, you
can keep a petty cash record by writing a check to petty cash and keeping a log of each expense paid
out of petty cash.
Inventory Records
Keeping on top of your inventory records will enable you to prevent pilferage, keep inventory
holdings to a minimum, and track buying trends, among other things.
If you sell a large number of small ticket items for example, as in a stationary store you might want to
use a computer system to track inventory or tie your computer system into your sales by having a POS
(point of sale) inventory system. If you sell larger ticket items you may be able to do it yourself on
paper.
The crucial inventory information you need to capture is: date purchased, stock number of item
purchased, purchase price, date sold, and sale price.
Accounts Receivable
If your products or services are paid for at time of delivery, you will not need an accounts receivable
tracking system. However, if you provide services or products for which people pay you at a later
date, your accounts receivable records keep track of what is owed to you. You can monitor accounts
receivable by holding on to a copy of all invoices sent out or by keeping an accounts receivable
record. Either way, the information you need to capture includes: invoice date,

Stop and Frisk Policy
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss the pros and cons of the Stop and Frisk policy in New

People argue that racial profiling is used. However, if one thinks logically it can be argued that a lot of
gun and drug activity happens in minority neighborhoods and, as we learned in class, many minorities
live in bad neighborhoods because they make less money than people who live in good
neighborhoods. This is not to say that whites or people who are not considered a minority do not live
in bad neighborhoods, it simply means that the majority of these people are minorities. With that being
said, because more drug and gun activity take place in these neighborhoods and more minorities live
there, it is more likely that more minorities will be stopped. Another possibility is that the officers
stopping the minorities have an unconscious bias brought on by the media or one of the theories we
learned about in class. For example, if an officer stopped an African American man it is possible that
the media has trained his mind to think of African American men as criminals. The same is true of
people who think that all terrorists are from an Arabic background. According to Schaefer (2009), it is
also possible that their unconscious bias was formed from the peer and social influences they may
have faced

Enzymes Essays
Enzymes Enzymes are complex proteins that carry out essentially every chemical reaction in the
human body. Enzymes function as biological catalyst, regulating the rate at which chemical reactions
proceed without themselves being altered in the process.
In this particular experiment we recognized benzoquinone and examined two numbers of factors to
determine their effects on enzyme action. The factors were temperature and specificity (how
discriminating the enzyme is in catalyzing different potential substrates). The enzyme that we
examined was catechol oxidase also known as tyrosinase.

DISCUSSION
1. We know that the substrates of catechol oxidase are catechol and oxygen. The substrates react with
one another within the active site of the enzyme. The products formed by this reaction are
benzoquinone and water. In this exercise we mixed the ingredients, stirred them, and incubate them at
40°C. We formed in tube 2a the product benzoquinone, observed its color change, and established a
color intensity scale.
2. In our second exercise we determined the ability of the enzyme cathecol oxidase to catalyze the
oxidation of two different but structurally similar substrates: cathecol and hydroquinone. Examining
their chemical structure we noticed that both are ring structures with two hydroxyl groups attached.
The question was if the enzyme could also convert it to benzoquinone. We observed how
discriminating cathecol oxidise is for particular substrates by comparing the color intensity of the
solutions in each test tubes with the standards produced in the first section (Table 1). We recorded
them in Table 2.
After 10 min we recorded the color intensity in Table 3. Our conclusion was that cathecol is stronger
enzyme than hydroquinone and that the enzyme is simply too specific to interact with the similar but
not identical molecule.

Pi dispels the belief that animals in the wild are more free . He refutes that statement by explaining
animals in the wild do not have glamorous lives, but instead they feel starvation and have to forage for
food every night. Also, he mentions that most animals are habitual creatures. For example, many
things that are out of the ordinary will upset an animal, such as a hose in an unusual place or a puddle.
Finally, he states that, above all else, animals are territorial. An animal in a zoo is no worse off than an
animal in the wild because an animal in a zoo has a routine and unchallenged territory. He then
explains zoomorphism, which is the phenomenon of an animal accepting a different type of animal or
a human as one of their own kind. There are many examples of this, such as dogs accepting humans as
one of their kind. Pi also mentions some occurrences of zoomorphism from his father s zoo. The

The Genre of Mystery in The Signalman and the Monkeys Paw...
How do dickens and jacobs use the genre of mystery in the signalman and the monkeys paw?
To answer the question, I believe that the authors of The Signalman and The Monkey s Paw use the
genres of mystery very well. I am going to explain why I think that in the following essay.
The first idea that I am going to look at is the role of fate. We see this take place in both stories, but in
slightly different ways. In
The Monkey s Paw, we see fate take on a large role, as the story is about a monkey s paw that has
been invested with a lot of evil power because an old fakir wanted to teach people not to interfere with
fate and its course.
In The Signalman however, the role of fate is not as large as the role in The Monkey s ... Show more

Furthermore, I will look at the suggestion of spectre. In The Monkeys
Paw, the paw had been invested with so much power because it had a spell put on it by an old fakir , as
this holy man wanted to get a message across to people that they were not to interfere with fate and its
course.
The Signalman is a story about a man who sees a figure, or a spectre several times, and after the
sightings, the next day somebody dies.
The suggestion of spectre plays quite a big role in this story, and gives a very effective result. The left
arm is across the face, and the right arm is waved, violently waved.
Moreover, the setting of The Monkey s Paw adds to the way Jacobs used the genre of mystery.
Without, the night was cold and wet . You could imagine a typical mystery scene, with rain, claps of
thunder etc a effective setting. The atmosphere inside the house was equally successful in grabbing my
attention, the fire was burning and the blinds were drawn, and this gives me the idea of being cosy
inside when the weather outside is terrible and miserable an appealing setting. The story is mostly set
at night, which adds to the eeriness.
Equally, Dickens grabs the reader s attention with a disturbing atmosphere. The steep cutting nearly
over his head gives me the idea of claustrophobia.
The thought of a foreshortened and shadowed figure gives me the sense of a figure that is possessed
and not as it seems. Most

Comparison Between Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber Of Fleet...
The first movie ever made was The Horse in Motion which was created by Eadweard Muybridge in
1878. I hope to see people talk about the events that happen in the movie, and how they end up
affecting the events of the story. In my speech I will analyze multiple movies, the elements in them,
and how the actions of the characters in them affect the story. I choose to do it this way, so people can
have some examples, and know things to look for. There are two movies I will mainly focus on they
are Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Pulp Fiction. I will also talk about other
movies, but they are not my main focus. I will do this do hopeful convince you that there is more to a
movie then what you can see. I shall begin every analyzation of the movies will a short summary of
them. Now with further ado I shall give a short short summary of Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber
of fleet street. There are three characters i m going to focus on in Sweeney Todd, and they are
Sweeney Todd, Lucy, and Johanna. Sweeney Todd AKA Benjamin Barker is a barber on Fleet street in
London. Lucy is Todd s wife that s her main point for now. Johanna is their daughter. Early in the
story Benjamin gets sent away by the judge who wants Lucy for himself. Lucy is then alone, and is
sent to a masquerade by the judge s assistant. Where something bad happens to her. She then later
poisons herself. Johanna was taken away by the judge and he adopted her. Fifteen years past and
Benjamin Barker comes back as Sweeney Todd. He also bring alongs Anthony who helped him on his
travels. He goes back to where is barber shop was, and meets Ms.Lovett. She tells him that Lucy
poisoned herself. Todds like i m gonna kill that judge, Which he ends up doing. Also Ms.Lovett makes
the meat pies out of humans. Now that you know the parts of the story that you need to know i can
begin the analysis. There is a crazed lady outside where Johanna is kept. Anthony talks to her and he
asked who is that lady in the window, and she knew that that was Johanna. She is then seen outside of
Ms. Lovett s meat pie shop, and says she see that sign of the devil outside of it. Ms.Lovett kicks her
out multiple times because she is on to her. Todd later kills her, but

Communication Skills That Build Winning Relationships
Communication is the key to growth and development of oneself, and relationships with others. Good
relationships are normally forged over good communication skills. We all know of the popular saying,
No man is an island. This means that human beings are social animals needing interaction, no man
was born to be a loner. Without effective communication it would be impossible to survive in this cut
throat world. Therefore, it is a necessity to have good communication skills in order to relate well with
other people.
COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY
There are two main reasons why we communicate:
To gather relevant information from people.
To elicit emotional support to people and in turn build mutually useful relationships.
This is best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This always tends to ruin relationships as it pushes people further and further way from them.
v) They blame themselves for everything
They often think that all failures are their fault. For instance, if a person failed to be promoted in a job
he will say, I knew I should have pitched myself harder and be more assertive. Maybe then I would
have gotten the promotion. vi) They dwell on the past
Polar thinkers find it hard to accept and let go of past mistakes, and concentrate on the future. They
use words such as should and ought. For example, in the case of a failed job interview a polar thinker
would say, I should have spoken more clearly and with much more confidence.
We should realize that the way we think affects how we act, in turn affecting our communication and
relationships. There is no shame in recognizing that we have maxed out our potential. Our happiness
cannot depend on other people, we determine our own happiness.
Steps to effective internal communication
These steps are used to help us grow. They can be summarized in the following acronym:
BE DO ACHIEVE NEW BE DO
a) BE
This being the first stage, one has to recognize their own strengths and also allow room for their
shortcomings. It is important to admit your past mistakes

To What Extent Can There Be If A Baking Soda Is...
Question What will the outcome be if the amount of baking soda is substituted with an equal amount

Knowledge Probe
Scientific Knowledge:
From previous experiences with baking cookies we are aware that if you accidentally use baking
powder instead of soda, the cookies will increase in thickness and will result in a sponge like texture.
Baking soda and baking powder are similar, but have different reactions to the ingredients in baking
cookies. Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate, and once it meets heat, carbon dioxide is
formed. The carbon dioxide is what gives rise to cookies and other baked goods. Baking powder, on
the other hand, is a mixture of baking soda, powdered acid, and cornstarch (Baking 101: The

We concluded that only one trial is not sufficient enough to provide an accurate claim. It is not
accurate because no measurement is precise so Byars cookie compared to ours will be different. By
conducting more than one trial we would have many of the same cookies to compare their general
features to Byars cookie. It would be easier to tell if in fact Byars did substitute baking powder for
baking soda or if he did not.
Errors that could not be eliminated includes the fact that measurements are not precise, and the varying
temperatures of the oven used. Because measurements are not precise, it is very unlikely that two
cookies will be exactly the same, making it harder to reach an accurate claim. During the experiment
we discovered that the oven had been set to a lower temperature than the 375° F specified in the
procedures. This caused cookies to become undercooked without realizing is as to the fact we were
following the procedure of leaving the cookie in only for nine to eleven minutes.

Negative Effects Of Photoshop On Teens
The Effects of Photoshop on Teens
To stop the negative impact of Photoshop on teenagers, photographers should only use Photoshop for
the good of photography and not to give false images of the social norm. In opposition, many would
state that Photoshop provides beauty and promotes financial in marketing. The primary objective is to
get money for false looks. American culture is highly obsessed with beauty. Everywhere you go there
are advertisements and misleading images. Whether it s for models or food alterations are used to sell
the image. Models appearances on these photos are admired and sought after from the society. Jessica
Walker stated in an interview I do not think Photoshop is bad I use it to make my photos better, but I
don t like what people use it for...The user and its intentions are bad not the program itself (Walker).
The issue is defined as the images being presented giving a false perception. These photos have been
tampered with by professionals, in which they think that their model is what society wants to see. Both
genders are being affected by the medias view of body image. However, women and teenagers
changed the most. Teenage girls have continuously been presented with images that they are supposed
to look like, which is unrealistic images. Photoshop causes some teens to have self esteem issues and
many other disorders.
In opposition, many would state that Photoshop gives beauty and promotes financial in marketing.
America is surrounded by money. For instance, studies show that America s primary export is
entertainment, while other countries exports include textile, spices, etc. In opposition, many other
countries are putting a stop to the false advertisement of models. For example, France has proposed a
bill asking editors to put a health warning on ads or photos that have been retouched, so that women
know that their bodies can no look that way. Editors of magazines portray their models as being thin,
young, and full faced, which are from technology, not the actual model. For example, when Meghan
Trainor appeared on a past cover of a magazine, she seemed to have a bigger hip than usual. She then
took this issue to the media and put the actual picture side by side. Many editorials

I Sing The Body Electric, By Walt Whitman
I Need You, Body and Soul
The poem I Sing the Body Electric, by Walt Whitman is one of the poems from the original 1855
edition of Leaves of Grass. In I Sing the Body Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in
connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul
by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the
soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect
body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body
connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between
our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman
argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the
masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our
mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward
expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, And if the body were not
the soul, what is the soul? Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul,
our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In section six, Whitman explains how The male is not less the soul
nor more .
I agree with Walt Whitman in that the physical body and our thoughts, and soul

Essay on The Collapse of the Greenland Norse
In Jared Diamond s novel Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed he discusses many
civilizations that moved away from their homelands, grew in population, and then either failed or
succeeded in their new environments. Throughout this essay I will attempt to explain the Collapse of
the Greenland Norse, one of the many societies to rise and fall. The Greenland Norse faced multiple
challenges including economical, agricultural, and unfriendly neighbors. Alongside Greenland other
North Atlantic islands faced geographical challenges that lead to some of their falls as well. Yet, first I
will discuss why the Norse left Scandinavia in search of new terrain. Similarly to other expansions the
Norse, also known as Vikings, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
195). Next in line are the Faeroes which lies in mild oceanic climates, but has a shorter growing
season than Orkneys and Shetland Island (Collapse pg. 196). On top of that, the Faeroes were also
known to be wet, foggy, and rainy for over two hundred days out of the year. Perhaps the largest island
other then Greenland itself, was Iceland which was made out of volcanic fire, ice, water, and wind
laying on the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Now that we ve talked about the challenges faced on the smaller
North Atlantic islands, let s go over the problems faced on Greenland by the Norse. Greenland
agriculture was so minimal that most native Norse never saw wheat, bread, or beer made from barley
in their lifetime. In fact, if the Norse did grow any crops, they would have made only an extremely
minor contribution to the diet. Probably just as an occasional luxury food for a few chiefs and clergy
(Collapse pg. 227). As far as the Greenland Norse economy went it was vital that they were able to
work together for the greater good of the whole community. On page (235) of Collapse it states,
Different Greenland locations produced different things, such that people at different locations
depended on each other for the things that they did not produce. Clearly that sentence shows how
interlinked Greenland Norse society was at the time. Unfortunately for the Norse even though they
were a strong society and interlinked closely

Reading can open one s mind to the imagination of anything to be dreamt of. Poems, short stories,
novels, plays, and dramas are all different types of literature that exist today. All of the different types
of literature have their own ways and formats that they are written in. Literature has many ways of
speaking to us as we read them, it can strike up emotions or memories that we have or it can make us
rethink a situation that we are going through. I believe that literature can help a person open up
through his or her stories. Even though major racial events are over, such as the Holocaust and slavery,
racism is still a big ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No matter what the clowns did, his grandfather would not laugh. I see that his grandfather is being
supportive because all the clowns are really doing is supporting their families by entertaining people.
The tone and irony of the story is serious and it also shows strength and determination. This story was
my favorite because I do not believe in segregation, I believe that everyone is the same. Skin color
does not make you who you are, your actions and morals so. I m a poet and didn t even know it, was
something an old teacher would say after he said something and it rhymed. Poetry is a great way to
express yourself, it does not have to rhyme or have reason behind it, just let it flow off the tip of your
tongue. When reading a poem, the author will use imagery to enable you to let your senses run wild.
In the poem The Facebook Sonnet by Sherman Alexie, it talks about Facebook and how it has
consumed our lives and the lives of the younger generation. Although it brings people together, it will
also tear them apart. Figurative language was not addressed in this poem, through the authors word
choice it was blunt and honest. The symbol and theme behind the whole poem is that everyone is
online nowadays instead of spending personal time with their loved ones. The tone and sound is
smooth and easy going. It is definitely something that everyone on social media should read. I

The Person Who Taught Me How To Read
I ve been reading as long as I can remember. The person who taught me how to read was my mother, I
remember her making sure I knew how to read and write my name before I started preschool. After
that point, I would read anything I could get my hands on that was my level. I also wrote, but not as
much as I read. Magazines, the backs of cereal boxes, even the little books my mom would buy me. I
remember my mom telling me stop writing in your books, you ll ruin them, after that, I made sure to
keep a pencil and paper with me in case I felt like I wanted to write.
In addition to reading and writing in my books, I would sit with my sister after she had checked out
her books from the library at the school she attended. I d wait until she finished, and then get her
books and read as much as I could. The books she had checked that I had been really fond of would
have to be the Clifford the Big Red Dog and Junie B Jones series. She didn t really like to read so she
would get small books and let me read them. After I had read her books, I would read other things
around the house,I also liked to read the Sunday comics. It was around that time I discovered how
much I liked to read. I read so much that by the time I had reached second or third grade, I didn t have
a reading level. I would just go into the library and get any book I wanted.
Although I loved small books, I would try to check out the largest books I could find because they had
the most AR points. I would try to pick

an hour or two into the concert people started hearing loud bangs. At first, several people thought it
was fireworks not knowing they would be victims in one of the biggest mass shootings. Jason Aldean
was on stage while the shooting began he was singing one of his hits When She Says Baby , later he
posted online that he and his crew were safe and praying for everyone. Jason wasn t the only artist that
tweeted out several artists also performing posted out letting everyone they were safe and sending love

of ammunition he had on him. After 10 minutes police busted into his room and found him dead, he

After this attack gun control laws have resurfaced and a GoFundMe page was created to help families

  • 2. Changing Structure of Watch Industry SWISS WATCH MARKET In 1970s the Swiss industry produced around 75 million units per year as compared to 25 million units in 1940s. Since 1966, when the Swiss Government s restriction on sale and acquisition of watch companies lapsed, the industry experienced a crescendo of mergers, bringing down the number of firms to around 1000. In 1971, ASUAG , the super trust combined the assembling firms selling seven different brands into the General Watch Holding Company. This move forged important new financial and managerial links between the component manufacturing and assembling sectors of the watch industry. By 1971 almost three quarters of all Swiss watch exports were accounted for by eight watch making groups. But the industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... manufacturing industry. In fact, only two U.S. watch companies, Bulova and Timex, were involved in any domestic watch production. Since the beginning, U.S. companies have struggled to cope with the labour requirements of watchmaking. Some U.S. watch sellers never tried; from the start imported finished watches or movements and simply put them in watch cases here. Other firms tackled the problem by locating at least part of their production overseas. Bulova and Gruen, for example, established their own manufacturing plants in Switzerland in the early years of the 1980s. After the Second World, jeweled lever watches dominated the U.S. market. Then during the 1950s and early 1960s the situation changed drastically. Timex first stormed the low price end of the watch market and later moved up into the middle price range. At the same time marginal Swiss producers flooded the U.S. market with inexpensive pin lever and jeweled lever watches making price competition all the more severe. In 1960s the Japanese began to carve out their piece of the U.S. market. On top of this, the mass merchandising revolution of the 1950s threw the traditional watch distribution system, sales through jewelers and fine department stores, into chaos. To survive in a market dominated by price competition, one after another U.S. watch company gave up on domestic watch manufacturing until, by 1970 there were only two survivors Bulova and Timex. • 3. Descriptive Essay About Roller Coaster A Rollercoaster Ride I was standing in line with my sister and cousin waiting to get on the Viper . We were at Six Flags having already been in the long line an hour and a half. We all went on our favorite rides, then we decided to go on the roller coaster. This was going to be my very first ever roller coaster in my life. Then the rollercoaster conductor told us to get in the coaster. I jumped in, put my seatbelt on and listened to the safety precautions. Then the conductor pressed the button and we were off. So we all decided to go on the Viper and we went to the area where it was located and we hopped in line. It said on the board a 1 and a half hour wait, so luckily I still had battery on my phone. Time passed and we got onto the roller coaster. I got in the very front of the coaster and put my seatbelt on. I was as nervous as I would ever be in my life. I was sweating because of how nervous I was. The voice told us about the precautions of the roller coaster that I had already heard a million times before standing in line. Then the roller coaster jerked forward and we were off. We went up slowly and I was ready for a big drop. I closed my eyes and then the roller coaster suddenly went down. I had this weird feeling inside of my gut. It was extremely fast and really high up. It took multiple turns and drops and I closed my eyes for all of the drops. Then the roller coaster suddenly went slower and we were at the start of the ride. I got off and met with my sister and cousin. See it was not that bad. My sister told me. Nope, I am never riding a roller coaster ever again in my life. I responded back. We rode some more rides after the coaster and then we had to meet up with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Analysis of Statistical Data Statistics In the Smith, et al (2006) study, 26 patients were used. They all had COPD that was stable, and they all complained of coughing. Their age, mean FEV, and smoking history were all accounted and controlled for (Smith, et al, 2006). Methods used involved a cough challenge test, sound recordings of their cough day and night, and a questionnaire that involved their perceived quality of life (Smith, et al, 2006). The coughs were actually manually counted and then translated to coughs per hour. The cough seconds per hour was quantified based on the number of seconds in each recorded hour that contained a cough. The overall median time that was spent coughing was calculated to be 7.5 cough seconds for every hour, although this lessened considerably at night (Smith, et al, 2006). The subjective cough scores were taken into account and compared with the actual cough seconds per hour. It was found that the study participants often thought that they spent more time coughing than what the data indicated to b accurate (Smith, et al, 2006). By looking at the statistical data used (median cough seconds per hour), it can be seen that people with COPD do not (on average) spend that many seconds per hour coughing. However, because of the disruptive nature of coughing repeatedly throughout that hour, these individuals often think they spend much more time coughing than they actually do (Smith, et al, 2006). This was evidenced by the fact that a subjective measure of coughing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many who feel they are over worked and not paid enough. They think if they were to receive more money, they would do a better job. Dr. Deming and Herzberg would disagree. They would say that those employees do not like there job and regardless what one would pay them, they still would not put forth their best effort because money is not a motivator. Dr. Edward Deming also believed that a firm should want to have strong competitors. His reasoning for saying this is to drive out fear. Better competition leads to bigger and better expansion of the market. Customers needs are determined by what the firm makes it. We did not ask for electricity, but we got it anyway. Now, most people would not even dare to live without it. Although many would disagree with Dr. Deming and say that it would be more beneficial for the company to be in a market with no strong competitors, Dr. Deming would agree with that statement. It would be good for the company but for the economy as a whole, it would not be good for. Since the Vietnam War, there has been almost fifty years of remembrance, various readings, and the publication of military documents. However, Richard Nixon s quote still has a certain veracity. The United States has fought in many wars, but none have compelled Americans to question our motives like the Vietnam War. The United States should not have gotten involved in Vietnam, because it was illegal, unjustified, and unethical. The legality of the Vietnam War has been brought into question frequently since the Gulf of Tonkin incident of 1964. While many believe that the United States was fighting against communism, and communism should be wiped off the entire face of this planet, one has to ask himself the question: is it really worth it? However, the Vietnam War was not just botched. From the beginning, American military officials brainwashed their soldiers into carelessly slaughtering millions of Vietnamese for the crime of being communists. If any Vietnamese hesitated for a millisecond on listening to an order, he was shot. If any Vietnamese was in simply in the way, he was shot. Aside from Vietnamese casualties, more 58,000 American soldiers died in this forsaken war. According to BBC News, the amount of ammunition fired per soldier was roughly twenty six times greater in Vietnam than during World War II. Additionally, by the end of the war, the United States had released the equivalent of about 640 Hiroshima sized atomic bombs on Vietnam. This begs the question, what other things happened in this conflict that hundreds of Vietnam War novels have conveniently hidden from the American public? Rape, torture, imprisonment, pillaging and burning of villages, and starvation are just a few. According to Mother Jones, on August 31, 1969, a young Vietnamese girl was kidnapped, held at gunpoint, brutally gang raped, and eventually murdered by United States soldiers. Her full story was told in the book Casualties of War by Daniel Lang, one of the few exceptions to all the patriotic Vietnam War books out there. Even more hidden from public scrutiny were crimes that United States soldiers committed against other United States soldiers. A document from the National Archives tells the story of a man called Curtis, who was viciously raped by three fellow GI s. His story is as follows: Curtis was feeling sick that late summer day and wouldn t drink with his hootch mates, so they pounced on him, held his mouth open, and poured whisky down his throat. Christianity Protestant Reformer Research Paper Christianity: Protestant Reformer Martin Luther Martin Luther, born into the Catholic Church in 1483, is considered to be the father of Protestantism. 1 Luther was a devout man who dedicated himself to the study of the bible; in addition to being a Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Wittenberg, he was also a priest and a monk. He spent a lot of his time focusing on what one could do to earn eternal salvation as it was written about in the Bible. This was especially troubling to him given the actions of his colleagues at the University of Wittenberg and his fellow priests and monks. He felt the actions of many of those in the Church that he loved were both immoral and corrupt, and especially in the midst of his own struggles with the idea of salvation, these actions troubled him deeply. 2 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had issues with abuses of power amongst clergy, especially with regard to church finances. He disliked the idea of indulgences, which involved members of the congregations paying priests and other leaders for abolition of their sins, effectively bribing church leaders for their own salvation. More than this, spiritual merit was attached to donations made to the church, and masses were able to be purchased for the dead. The University of Whittenberg held many sacred relics, including hairs said to have been from the Virgin Mary and the crown of thorns placed on Jesus head during crucifixion. Rather than cherishing these items for their religious worth, they were sold. 3 Because of these things, Martin Luther was raged with a fierce and agitated conscience . 4 After intense study, Luther followed the traditional method of protesting within the Catholic church he nailed his complaints to the Church door and invited them to meet with him. They can be manipulated to turn into any kind of cell, for example, new skin cells for someone with melanoma. Stem cells are found in the placenta, umbilical blood, fat tissue, bone marrow and mew embryos. Embryonic stem cells have an advantage over the other sources of stem cells because the cells have less exposure to the outside world and are relatively easy to access, in situations like in vitro fertilization. Key Points The key points that will be made in this claim of fact are that students involved in extracurricular activities receive better grades than those who are not involved in extracurricular activities. In addition, activities improve the overall student. Therefore, they help students to receive better grades by teaching them character building lessons, teaching them lifelong skills, saving some at risk students who would possibly drop out of school, and helping students develop social skills. The both are inspired by postimpressionism and also broken the old style that is depicted by Cezanne. In this essay, I would like to argue how the two are inspired by Cezanne art piece and how eminence they are. Paul Cezanne s The Large Bathers Cézanne got rid of the traditional presentation of paintings that is point on the space and colors. And he deliberately followed firm format than changing colors. Inventory Records Keeping on top of your inventory records will enable you to prevent pilferage, keep inventory holdings to a minimum, and track buying trends, among other things. If you sell a large number of small ticket items for example, as in a stationary store you might want to use a computer system to track inventory or tie your computer system into your sales by having a POS (point of sale) inventory system. If you sell larger ticket items you may be able to do it yourself on paper. The crucial inventory information you need to capture is: date purchased, stock number of item purchased, purchase price, date sold, and sale price. Accounts Receivable If your products or services are paid for at time of delivery, you will not need an accounts receivable tracking system. However, if you provide services or products for which people pay you at a later date, your accounts receivable records keep track of what is owed to you. You can monitor accounts receivable by holding on to a copy of all invoices sent out or by keeping an accounts receivable record. However, if one thinks logically it can be argued that a lot of gun and drug activity happens in minority neighborhoods and, as we learned in class, many minorities live in bad neighborhoods because they make less money than people who live in good neighborhoods. This is not to say that whites or people who are not considered a minority do not live in bad neighborhoods, it simply means that the majority of these people are minorities. With that being said, because more drug and gun activity take place in these neighborhoods and more minorities live there, it is more likely that more minorities will be stopped. Another possibility is that the officers stopping the minorities have an unconscious bias brought on by the media or one of the theories we learned about in class. For example, if an officer stopped an African American man it is possible that the media has trained his mind to think of African American men as criminals. The same is true of people who think that all terrorists are from an Arabic background. Enzymes function as biological catalyst, regulating the rate at which chemical reactions proceed without themselves being altered in the process. In this particular experiment we recognized benzoquinone and examined two numbers of factors to determine their effects on enzyme action. The factors were temperature and specificity (how discriminating the enzyme is in catalyzing different potential substrates). We know that the substrates of catechol oxidase are catechol and oxygen. The substrates react with one another within the active site of the enzyme. The products formed by this reaction are benzoquinone and water. In this exercise we mixed the ingredients, stirred them, and incubate them at 40°C. We formed in tube 2a the product benzoquinone, observed its color change, and established a color intensity scale. 2. In our second exercise we determined the ability of the enzyme cathecol oxidase to catalyze the oxidation of two different but structurally similar substrates: cathecol and hydroquinone. Examining their chemical structure we noticed that both are ring structures with two hydroxyl groups attached. The question was if the enzyme could also convert it to benzoquinone. We observed how discriminating cathecol oxidise is for particular substrates by comparing the color intensity of the solutions in each test tubes with the standards produced in the first section (Table 1). We recorded them in Table 2. After 10 min we recorded the color intensity in Table 3. Our conclusion was that cathecol is stronger enzyme than hydroquinone and that the enzyme is simply too specific to interact with the similar but not identical molecule. 3. ... To answer the question, I believe that the authors of The Signalman and The Monkey s Paw use the genres of mystery very well. I am going to explain why I think that in the following essay. The first idea that I am going to look at is the role of fate. We see this take place in both stories, but in slightly different ways. In The Monkey s Paw, we see fate take on a large role, as the story is about a monkey s paw that has been invested with a lot of evil power because an old fakir wanted to teach people not to interfere with fate and its course. In The Signalman however, the role of fate is not as large as the role in The Monkey s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, I will look at the suggestion of spectre. In The Monkeys Paw, the paw had been invested with so much power because it had a spell put on it by an old fakir , as this holy man wanted to get a message across to people that they were not to interfere with fate and its course. The Signalman is a story about a man who sees a figure, or a spectre several times, and after the sightings, the next day somebody dies. The suggestion of spectre plays quite a big role in this story, and gives a very effective result. The left arm is across the face, and the right arm is waved, violently waved. Moreover, the setting of The Monkey s Paw adds to the way Jacobs used the genre of mystery. Without, the night was cold and wet . You could imagine a typical mystery scene, with rain, claps of thunder etc a effective setting. The atmosphere inside the house was equally successful in grabbing my attention, the fire was burning and the blinds were drawn, and this gives me the idea of being cosy inside when the weather outside is terrible and miserable an appealing setting. The story is mostly set at night, which adds to the eeriness. Equally, Dickens grabs the reader s attention with a disturbing atmosphere. The steep cutting nearly over his head gives me the idea of claustrophobia. The thought of a foreshortened and shadowed figure gives me the sense of a figure that is possessed and not as it seems. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. Yet, first I will discuss why the Norse left Scandinavia in search of new terrain. Similarly to other expansions the Norse, also known as Vikings, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 195). Next in line are the Faeroes which lies in mild oceanic climates, but has a shorter growing season than Orkneys and Shetland Island (Collapse pg. 196). On top of that, the Faeroes were also known to be wet, foggy, and rainy for over two hundred days out of the year. Perhaps the largest island other then Greenland itself, was Iceland which was made out of volcanic fire, ice, water, and wind laying on the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Now that we ve talked about the challenges faced on the smaller North Atlantic islands, let s go over the problems faced on Greenland by the Norse. Greenland agriculture was so minimal that most native Norse never saw wheat, bread, or beer made from barley in their lifetime. In fact, if the Norse did grow any crops, they would have made only an extremely minor contribution to the diet. Probably just as an occasional luxury food for a few chiefs and clergy (Collapse pg. 227). As far as the Greenland Norse economy went it was vital that they were able to work together for the greater good of the whole community. On page (235) of Collapse it states, Different Greenland locations produced different things, such that people at different locations depended on each other for the things that they did not produce. Clearly that sentence shows how interlinked Greenland Norse society was at the time. Unfortunately for the Norse even though they were a strong society and interlinked closely ... Poems, short stories, novels, plays, and dramas are all different types of literature that exist today. All of the different types of literature have their own ways and formats that they are written in. Literature has many ways of speaking to us as we read them, it can strike up emotions or memories that we have or it can make us rethink a situation that we are going through. I believe that literature can help a person open up through his or her stories. Even though major racial events are over, such as the Holocaust and slavery, racism is still a big ... I see that his grandfather is being supportive because all the clowns are really doing is supporting their families by entertaining people. The tone and irony of the story is serious and it also shows strength and determination. This story was my favorite because I do not believe in segregation, I believe that everyone is the same. Skin color does not make you who you are, your actions and morals so. I m a poet and didn t even know it, was something an old teacher would say after he said something and it rhymed. Poetry is a great way to express yourself, it does not have to rhyme or have reason behind it, just let it flow off the tip of your tongue. When reading a poem, the author will use imagery to enable you to let your senses run wild. In the poem The Facebook Sonnet by Sherman Alexie, it talks about Facebook and how it has consumed our lives and the lives of the younger generation. Although it brings people together, it will also tear them apart. Figurative language was not addressed in this poem, through the authors word choice it was blunt and honest. The symbol and theme behind the whole poem is that everyone is online nowadays instead of spending personal time with their loved ones. The tone and sound is smooth and easy going. It is definitely something that everyone on social media should read. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Person Who Taught Me How To Read I ve been reading as long as I can remember. The person who taught me how to read was my mother, I remember her making sure I knew how to read and write my name before I started preschool. After that point, I would read anything I could get my hands on that was my level. I also wrote, but not as much as I read. Magazines, the backs of cereal boxes, even the little books my mom would buy me. I remember my mom telling me stop writing in your books, you ll ruin them, after that, I made sure to keep a pencil and paper with me in case I felt like I wanted to write. In addition to reading and writing in my books, I would sit with my sister after she had checked out her books from the library at the school she attended. I d wait until she finished, and then get her books and read as much as I could. The books she had checked that I had been really fond of would have to be the Clifford the Big Red Dog and Junie B Jones series. She didn t really like to read so she would get small books and let me read them. After I had read her books, I would read other things around the house,I also liked to read the Sunday comics. It was around that time I discovered how much I liked to read. I read so much that by the time I had reached second or third grade, I didn t have a reading level. I would just go into the library and get any book I wanted. Although I loved small books, I would try to check out the largest books I could find because they had the most AR points. I would try to pick ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
