Bruce Springsteen s Song Born In The USA
Ask anyone during the mid 1980 s and I can promise you they have heard Born in the U.S.A by Bruce
Springsteen. Written in 1984, this record setting single was the theme song for America during the
Vietnam war. Born in the U.S.A swept the nation by storm, selling 18 million copies. Every American
may know to scream as loud as they can when the lyrics BORN IN THE U.S.A come on, but they may
not necessarily know the true meaning behind the song. Many think it s a song about patriotism, but it
s actually a song that shows the cruel treatment that Vietnam veterans received upon returning
home. This widely supported song deals with the negative effects of the Vietnam War on Americans
and the cruel mistreatment of Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. ... Show more

In the beginning of the song, Bruce sings, Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand,
sent me off to a foreign land, to go and kill the yellow man ( Born In The U.S.A. Lyrics. ). This is
referring to when the government sent soldiers over to Vietnam to kill the Viet Cong. The song
continues to scream patriotism as shown in the repeated lyrics Born in the U.S.A . The song then goes
into the struggles for Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. It then continues to
talk about the hardship these veterans faced when looking for a job. No one at the time wanted to hire
anyone who was affiliated with the war because many Americans were against it. The song then goes
into talking about one of this buddies who went over to fight the Viet Cong. Bruce sings about how
the Viet Cong is still there and he died in an effort to defeat them. This not only talks about one person
who died, it is also a representation of all soldiers who lost their lives during the war. This song was
not only a song intended to raise Americans patriotism, it also showed the hardships Vietnam veterans
had to face both over seas, as well as back

The Main Characters Of The Pianist s The Pianist
The Pianist is based on the true story of a renowned Polish Jewish musician who lived through World
War 2 in Warsaw, Poland. At the start of the war, Jewish families had to wear white arm bands with a
blue Star of David and were only allowed a small amount of money. Families were sent off to
concentration camps in packed railroad cars and the families who remained in Warsaw starved to
death. The only reason why the main character, Wladyslaw Szpilman, was able to survive was through
the people who helped give him food, shelter and basic necessities. The kindness of others helped
Wladyslaw survive through the wartimes. Kindness is defined as, an individual that possesses a
sympathetic or helpful nature. One of the main themes within The Pianist is that kindness can be
found in the most unexpected places, even in Nazi Germany.
Wladyslaw Szpilman found help from countless people, even from Germans who were not Jewish.
Irena Sendler was a social worker who lived in Warsaw. She was a part of the Polish Underground and
a Holocaust resistance. It is estimated that she saved more than 2,000 Jewish children from the Ghetto.
She was awarded the Righteous among the Nations in 1965. Irena Sendler said,
To save one Jewish child, ten Poles and two Jews had to risk death. To betray that same child and the
family that hid him required only one informer or, worse still, one blackmailer. The risk of being
caught by the SS was not prison, but death death for the entire family. (Sendler)

The United States And The European Union
Europe was constantly in civil conflict with each other prior to the aftermath of World War II.
However, at the end of World War II, it became evident that the United States would dominate global
politics. In fact, much of the foreign policy implemented throughout the world were simply just the
goals of the United States and the United States did become the major geopolitical hegemon directing
international policies which other countries would follow. In simpler terms, the United States
frequently exercised power throughout the 20th century. However, with the emergence of the
European Union and it s recent economic rise rivaling that of the United States, some scholars begin
to question whether the United States will be able to maintain its role in the international arena and
what the role of the European Union will be. Thus, the question must be asked, Will the European
Union run the 21st century? Viewing this through an economic lens, the European Union will run the
21st century because of other regions adopting its economic model, the sheer size of the EU economy,
and its overall economic influence and power. First, it is important to examine the readings regarding
the European Union s foreign policy. Here are some general explanations on the arguments from the
following readings about the EU and its role in the 21st century. Kagan argues that the European
Union will not run the 21st century. His reasoning is that although the EU is an economic power, it
lacks

The Legal Field At Point Park University
Yogi Berra believed that, Baseball is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical. From my tenure
as a college softball pitcher at Point Park University, I learned how imperative being mentally sound is
to the game of softball. The legal field is a very demanding field. I know my experiences gained on
the diamond will allow me to flourish in a field dependent upon mental toughness. Foremost, being a
pitcher made me realize how important it is to have a short term memory. When I was on the mound, I
knew that the result of the previous batter had no bearing on what the next batter would do. For
example, when I gave up a big hit, before the next batter came to the plate, I had to forget about what
just happened. In softball, it is important to not dwell on the negatives, but learn from them. Because
of pitching, I know yesterday s failures can turn into tomorrow s successes. I plan to have the same
attitude in the legal field when obstacles come my way. In addition, pitching has taught me that there
are some things in life that I will never be able to control. Success on the mound is dependent on a
variety of factors. Umpires, field conditions, the weather, and plays my team made all had an impact
on the on the outcome of a game. When it was raining, I understood that I had no control over the
weather. However, I could make small adjustments to my routine to preform better in unfavorable
conditions. In a similar manner, when an umpire made a call I did not agree

American Film and Movies from the 1950’s to Present Essay...
American Film and Movies from the 1950 s to Present
Today, American film is among the most internationally supported commodities. Financially, its
contributions are enormous: the industry is responsible for the circulation of billions of dollars each
year. Since its explosion into the new media markets during the mid twentieth century, film has
produced consistently growing numbers of viewers and critics alike. Sparking debate over the nature
of its viewing, film is now being questioned in social, political, and moral arenas for its potential
impact on an audience. Critics claim that watching films is a passive activity in which the viewer
becomes subconsciously absorbed, and creates a reliance or addiction to the medium, and thus ...

As described by Francis Couvares, films needed to be censored precisely because they arouse strong
desires and strong antipathies in an untrustworthy public. Advocates of censorship insisted that movies
directly affected behaviour, usually for ill, creating general crisis and confusion over the moral
implications of the medium. Charting movie attendance rates, for example, the WCTV (Women s
Christian Temperance Union) of the 1950s argued that youths were in a greater danger of becoming
addicted to movies than they were of becoming addicted to alcohol.
An examination of the film by decade reveals that although advocates of censorship insisted that
movies directly affected human behaviour, usually for the ill, the following fifty years of film
discourse in America was further enhanced by the blurred lines over the social and moral
accountability of the medium. The 1950s were rife with paradoxes: they were a time of prosperity and
poverty, and of freedom and discrimination. The Cold War, the civil rights movement,
suburbanization, the Beat generation, rock and roll, and the rise of television were all landmarks of the
mid century decade. Filmmakers interpreted the era s most provocative and often contradictory issues
for a mass audience; McCarthyism, optimism and pessimism about the future, women s consciousness

Socks leveled the knee with an affixed tassel. Robbed in custom made cloaks and capes that drape the

Just like the clothing, the characteristics of military during the Battle of Hastings, differed from

Analysis Of Consider The Lobster
Consideration: thoughtful of the rights and feelings of others
How do you consider the lobster? David Foster Wallace wrote the essay Consider the Lobster. After
the reading, the essay for the first time the thoughts that went through my head consisted of how the
lobsters were treated and what Wallace thought of the lobsters. The lobsters are chosen out of usually
a pot or a giant tank and then boiled to death. They are placed into a pot of boiling hot water and the
saying that the lobsters are screaming in the pot comes to be true. Some people find it disturbing to
listen to the sound while others cover the pot and not let it bother them. Also, from the first reading I
thought that Wallace was being somewhat hypocritical because I got the idea that it was acceptable for
him to eat and coo ketch lobsters but seeing it done in the setting of a restaurant, in a larger quantity
makes it worse. Gathering all this information again had made me rethink the essay and look towards
the deeper meaning. Wallace committed suicide in 2008 due to mental illness. So, when we consider
the lobster does it mean that to be considerate of it? Another point I came to was about was mental
illness and how in 2008 Wallace committed suicide. When lobsters are chosen and boiled to eat, those
people are sending them to their grave . So, what does being considerate consist of when discussing a
lobster, a dead body and the food we are about to eat?

The Electronic Medical Record ( Emr )
Meaningful Use and its Development The electronic medical record (EMR) is the replacement of
paper manual charts and is being used all across the country. As per Hebda and Czar (2013), the EMR
is the building block of the electronic health record (EHR), which can be defined as a longitudinal
record that includes client data, demographics, clinician notes, medications, diagnostic findings, and
other essential healthcare information (p.293). The widespread use of EHR s in America is foreseeable
and inevitably unavoidable, but by no means a simple and undoubtedly an effortless task to achieve.
In an attempt to reduce costs in the introduction, conversion, and implementation of patient health
records the government has provided regulations for meaningful use (MU) (p.280). In the attempt to
improve the safety and quality of the nation s healthcare system, the government enacted the Health
Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. The HITECH Act is part of
the American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA), enacted on February 17, 2009, which includes
many measures intended to modernize the nation s infrastructure (cdc.gov.). The HITECH Act,
encourages the use of EHR s meaningful use in order to reduce the redundancy of data entry with
integration and interoperability. Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS ) and the Office of the
National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) consider meaningful use of interoperable electronic health
records

Rappaccini s Daughter And The Birthmark By Nathaniel...
The Interrogated Science Science is one of the most important factors that many science fictions deal
with. Some of them describe the positive and useful side of science such as the description of sciences
like mathematics, physics, chemistry and many other fields of study. While some of the other science
fictions describe the dangerous sides of science that can hurt and even kill human beings. Concerning
this idea, Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the American writers of the mid nineteenth century who
writes about art and science. This paper will describe the sort of science that need to be interrogated

Aylmer tried to convince his wife with a plan that achieves her happiness by enjoying the perfect

laboratory. It was a symbol of his discoveries of the elemental power of nature. This time, Georgian
was one of the elements Aylmer used to discover the physiological truth by his plan of removing his
wife s mark. As compared to Dr. Aylmer, Dr. Rappacini is also a skilled physician who makes a
different scientific experiment on both human beings and plants. He is a famous doctor by which his
name is heard as far as Naples. He makes a medication from strange plants like collecting the strange
flowers in his garden. Signor Pietro Baglioni, one of the main characters of Rappaccini s Daughter
story, describes Doctor Rappaccini when he says: Doctor Rappaccini has as much science as any
member of the faculty with perhaps one single exception in Padua or all Italy. But there are certain
grave objections to his professional character (Hawthrone 4). It means that Doctor Rappaccini is as far
as he is a good scientist, he has some issues with his character. One of these issues, as Dr. Aylmer has,
is his concentration on science more than mankind (4). He deals with his patients as if they are only
experiments. He is ready to sacrifice any human life, himself or anyone dearest to him for adding
anything possible to his knowledge. Giovani, who is another important character,

Comparing The Congruence Of Shakespeare And Montaigne
The Congruence of Shakespeare and Montaigne Envision living in a nation that has achieved the
paramount form of society, one that is ideal in its ethical, social, and political facets. Simple to
imagine but impossible to replicate, and that is, according to Plato s Theory of Forms, because the
physical world is a poor copy of these ideas, these forms, even the ones closest to perfection are
imperfect. That is why a utopia can not be attained in reality. Although, in Montaigne s Of Cannibals,
it is proposed that the natural state is the closest to accomplishing this. The ideas set forth in this work,
chiefly the concept of cultural relativism, influenced Shakespeare in his writing of The Tempest, and

Caliban is subjected to a way of thought that is utterly new to him, given to him from Miranda and
Propsero, and it is said by Montaigne that those who think and act in these way are savage, not just
those who they imposed these ideas upon simply because in their eyes they were deemed as savage.
Even though Caliban is a slave to Prospero and had wicked notions towards him, it is only because his
natural state was altered, which can sometimes lead to an opposite effect than intended. Montaigne
also describes that a nation that is closest to perfection is one with no knowledge of political systems,
letters, numbers etcetera, and Shakespeare concurs with this through representing it in Gonzalo, who
contemplates that if he had the island to rule, he would rule congruently with Montaigne s belief. The
characters of Caliban and Gonzalo both represent Shakespeare s agreement with Montaigne and his
philosophy of cultural

Notes On Leadership And Management
Leadership versus Management
1. Define Management.
Management is the organizational process that includes strategic planning, setting; objectives,
managing resources, deploying the human and financial assets needed to achieve objectives, and
measuring results. Management also includes recording and storing facts and information for later use
or for others within the organization.
Management is the process of reaching organizational goals by working with and through people and
other organizational resources.
There are three main characteristics that management focus on: It is a process or series of continuing
and related activities, involving and concentrating on reaching organizational goals, and reaching the
goals by working with and through people and other organizational resources.
2. Define Leadership. Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of individuals to influence
and guide followers or other members of an organization. Leadership involves making sound (and
sometimes difficult) decisions, creating and articulating a clear vision, establishing achievable goals
and providing followers with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve these goals. Leadership is
the ability of a company s management to make sound decisions and inspire others to perform well.

Contradictions in Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales Essay
Contradictions in Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales There is no question that contradictory values make
up a major component of The Canterbury Tales. Fate vs. Fortuna, knowledge vs. experience and love
vs. hate all embody Chaucer s famous work. These contrasting themes are an integral part of the
complexity and sophistication of the book, as they provide for an ironic dichotomy to the creative plot
development and undermine the superficial assumptions that might be made. The combination of
completely contradictory motifs leads to the unusual stories and outcomes that come to play out in the
tales. And these outcomes draw focus on the larger universal issues that in many cases transcend the

In the debate, a number of different options have emerged. Some, like medieval author Paul Ruggiers,
argue that it is impossible to determine the Prioress?s attitude and that, ?we must be satisfied with
ambiguity.? Others like writer Victoria Wickham argue the most popular belief, that the Prioress?s
bigotry is without question and readers should be more concerned about the degree rather than the fact
itself. But there is another possibility. Edwards and Spector, two prominent medieval scholars, put
aside the issue of racism temporarily and instead offer an alternative interpretation on the very nature
of Chaucer?s love hate contradiction in the Prioress?s tale. They argue that the love vs. hate
contradiction is not dependent on outside forces, but is actually an internal conflict within the Prioress
herself. Consequently, the individuals and subsequent groups in her tale are not specific characters but
culturally influenced manifestations representing separate issues. In this way her personality becomes
the allegory of her tale, making specific references within her story irrelevant to her true attitude. In
this writer?s opinion, popular attitudes on the nature of the love hate contradiction in the Prioress?s
tale are wrong; Edwards and Stevens help prove this. Rather than considering the most obvious stand
alone factors of love and hate in the story, specifically the description of the Prioress and her affinity

In many of his plays, Shakespeare demonstrates ideas of gender and racial stereotypes. Othello, a play
in which characters are judged based on sex and appearance, is an example of these stereotypes.
Othello s non white ethnic background provides a platform for racial conflict. The characters of
Desdemona and Emilia allow for sexism and gender conflict. These themes of Othello are closely
related because of the similar prejudice and stereotypes. The sexism and racism in Othello allow for
racist tones and ethnic conflicts.

Emilia does her husband s bidding by taking the handkerchief that Othello gave Desdemona because
Iago hath a hundred times wooed to steal it (3.3.308 309). After she gives him the handkerchief, she
asks Iago why he wants it and threatens to take it back if it is not for some good purpose (3.3.
333.335). In the end, she betrays her husband by revealing his plot to destroy Othello s life. In her
conversation with Desdemona about adultery, Emilia informs her that she would commit adultery, Nor
I neither by this heavenly light; I might do t as well i the dark (4.3.68 69). Emilia shows her
independence from her husband by admitting that she would commit adultery if the price were right.
Her cynical attitude toward men is shown as she says, They are all but stomachs, and we all but food;
They eat us hungerly, and when they are full They belch us (3.4.106 108). She does not believe her
marriage is based on love, rather she believes her husband sees her as a possession to be used as he
pleases.
The male characters of the play view women in varied ways. Cassio often admires Desdemona s
positive characteristics and states that she is perfection (2.3.25). Iago s attitude toward women is
critical and negative. He tells Emilia that women are pictures out of doors, Bells in your parlors,
wildcats in your kitchens, Saints in your injuries, devils being offended, Players in your huswifery,
and huswives in your beds (2.1.111 114) meaning that women are objects at

present from the initial chapters and serving as the catalyst for many events that occur throughout the
work. The portrayal of Kempe s religious mysticism is primarily positive with most conflict being
used to support and showcase her mysticism. Typically these conflicts revolve around the skepticism
and disbelief by those who doubt her abilities sometimes even being called a heretic. These skeptics
usually then encounter an event focused around Margery that changes their mind turning them into
argent supporters. An example of this from early in the work is Margery s encounter with a monk of
renown who is described as despising her. This same monk later comes to support her after she tells
him of the sins he has committed despite having no prior knowledge of them. In addition to the
portrayal of her mysticism the question of whether it appears to be based more upon logic or emotion
arises. Based upon the evidence present in the text one can conclude that her mysticism is primarily
based on emotion. The language use in the text is the strongest evidence for this conclusion with a
good example coming in the sixty fourth chapter of the first book. Words such as love, sweet, and joy
are used several times throughout the chapter emphasizing the emotion present in her mysticism. In
addition to the language use Kempe s refusal to avoid situations that would be complicated by her
mysticism serves as additional evidence. One such event occurred during her travels when she clashed
repeatedly with her companions over her weeping causing them to be harsh with her. The logical
action in this situation would be to try and appease her companions in order to make the journey more
bearable. Kempe however does not do this, instead making the emotional

Potential Of Innocence In Dracula
It seems a simple task to create the potential of fear. People have grown to fear mainly similar things
and ultimately anything that endangers the innocent part of human kind. Sadly, there is only a slight
hint of true innocence that exists in us as humans. How come fear intrueges us, it is not the knowing
of its unrealness, because for a moment there, it seems real. Therefore it is an art, how can one be
freigthened and fascinated in its most beautiful way. How is it conjured, not just the fear of actual
danger, but the art of darkness.
In analyzing the freigthning or sinister parts of four artistic works introducing us to darkness there we
many things to point out, as there obviously is limitation to analyzing within a research of a text, ...

This is because such descriptions make the event seem so vivid as if you are living it, af if you are not
sitting on the couch you are sitting on because it takes too much times to think about it to be aware of
the reality that is happening outside of the book. There were little decorations in the passages, perhaps
because scene passages represented the essence of the novel, the darkest parts of it, whereas it needs to
be concrete, no unnecessary fuss like alliteration and other literary devices that are found much more
in other kinds of novels and other parts of horror novels, especially Dracula. Dracula is much older
than IT, the social context of the book depicts a world of differences. Stoker made extreme use of
langual flattery but as there were dangerous conflicts, he needed to leave some of that out to ensure
that the reader s attention would not fade. The boat scene was obviously a different technique but that
was because it was written as a to the point writing captain who suddenly had so much more to
describe, it was also needed for later clarification to enclose what happened on the boat. Stephen King,
to me, is a master of vocabulary because of his grand choice of words to describe even the tiniest
things without boring the reader. This makes his writing so vivid, he describes everything as if he was
standing there as it happened, but that does not make it

The Family Aspect Of The Quilt
In a perfect world, the Caribbean is like a quilt that has been stitched together by a mother or
grandmother. It eventually comes together to form a unique blanket that incorporates a multi
dimensional group of different pieces of colors and sizes in its final product. The maternal aspect of
the quilt, represents the Euro colonial influence that was responsible for the colonialization of the
Caribbean region. All patches have their own unique shape and design, and eventually come together
to make a fragmented image on the quilt. The fragmented image, created by different colors, shapes
and patterns, represent the different cultures and races that are all interrelated to each other in the
Caribbean. And each individual patch, represents a different island nation, and the thread, cotton and
embroidery that weaves the patches together, represents the languages and ideologies that have come
together over the course of history, to bond these island nations together.
Today, however, the Caribbean countries struggle a great deal with human development. These
struggles have arisen as a result of the lack of unity in self identity, with respect to the idea of
fragmentation. Mintz describes fragmentation to be a patchwork quilt of societies and cultures, which
arose through the colonization and exploitation of the Caribbean region. This exploitation of the
regions resources, such as sugar, coffee, gold and other natural resources, by the colonizing country

Comparison Of Friends And The Big Bang Theory
The TV series Friends and The Big Bang Theory are two of my favorites series. The television show
Friends exhibits six main characters, consisting of three males (Ross, Chandler, and Joey) and three
females (Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe). Ross role is based on his scientific knowledge and the
importance of his values and his passion for his work. However, every time someone does not agree
with him or believes in something else than science, he feels that not only his career but also his
personal identity is challenged. He is stubborn and has a hard time admitting that people have different
points of view. He has been three times married, has a kid with his ex lesbian wife who remarried to a
woman. Then there is Chandler who at the beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The TV show exhibits seven characters, consisting of four males (Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and
Raj) and three females (Penny, Bernadette, and Amy). Sheldon is the child prodigy who started
college when he was not even a teenager. He has an obsessive compulsive personality disorder of
performing specific activities on specific days and at a specific time, any disruption will distress him
enormously. He has a superiority complex and does not hide his contempt for others peoples intellects
which result in hurtful and inappropriate comments. Leonard is Sheldon s roommate and unlike
Sheldon, he is interested in building interpersonal and social relationships with the rest of the
characters. He comes from a family of well known and successful people while he is the only one who
has not reached that point in life yet. Howard is the creepy Jewish guy who tries to flirt with every girl
he meets. He still lives with his mother and has a hard time compromising to his religion s norms. Raj
is the foreign member of the crew, he comes from India and considers himself exotic. At the beginning
of the show, he is unable to speak to women, later he finds out he can only talk to them when he is
drunk. Unlike his friends, Raj is perceived as homosexual because of his particular feminine interests
and his close friendship with Howard, although, he considers himself

The Middle East And Northern Africa Essay
The Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA)
My initial impressions of the Middle East and Northern Africa are they are desolate, poor, and
primarily Muslim. Although I know there is an infrastructure in the cities that is not how I viewed the
overall majority of these two countries. The terms political unrest and upheaval, also come to mind.
When all you see on the news are war torn areas in these countries, the view you come out with is
skewed by what the media introduces you to. Many thoughts also run through ones head when you
ponder what to expect when you approach these countries about business opportunities. I do not
believe I am ethnocentric when it comes to other countries and their culture, albeit I have a perception
which is stifled and constricted by those skewed views in which we are shown. I also feel there is only
two classes, the haves and have nots, if you will. The haves living in the cities with an infrastructure,
and the have nots living in shacks without any of modern day conveniences.
Although my impressions were uninformed, the information you provided in the video confirmed
what I believed as well as gave me additional insight into those countries with which I was unfamiliar.
In the video you reviewed two specific cities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt Dubai and
Cairo. These two cities are vastly different from each other, however, I originally viewed them to be
similar in several areas like terrain, language, and religion. The

Psychodynamic Approaches And The Psychodynamic Approach
The purpose of understanding and utilizing a variety of psychodynamic approaches is for the
humanistic well being, in connection with the client using a client centered therapeutic approach. The
reason for using a psychodynamic approach is unveiling the conscious and unconscious mind, from
the client s emotional state of mind. The psychodynamic approach focuses on the beginning stages of
the clients childhood years, typically analyzing events from birth breaking from six years old. The
human mind unconscious and conscious state determines who we are and how we will be from our
past carrying over to our present, and dictating our future. Henceforth, the effects of our state of mind
come from past events in our subconscious mind, which plays a major role in our adult life. As an
illustration, Sigmund Fraud, a psychologist theoretical ordained the importance of childhood events,
which play a major part in our daily lives. The definition of psychodynamic approach is unconscious
thoughts, pressures of society, family events, people s childhood event, and biological forces. A
professional person in the area of psychology must be in tune, with the client using empathy and code
of ethics. For example, the theories are psychoanalysis, analytical, or individual approach which deals
with the person s state of well being.
Second, the therapeutic sides explore a ray of techniques from a psychodynamic approach, with an
umbrella for therapeutic approaches using Psychoanalysis,

The Liberty Bell, Washington Monument, The Bald Eagle
The symbols of this great nation are many. The Liberty Bell, Washington Monument, the Bald Eagle,
the White House, and the document that is the foundation on which this country is built, the
Constitution of the United States. These symbols are immediately recognized by the citizens of the
United States and some internationally, however the one symbol that is universally recognized is the
Stars and Stripes. It is the symbol of a free nation whose citizens are allowed to strive for the
American dream, the ability to achieve success through hard work, regardless of race, creed, or
religious beliefs. Such a symbol should be held sacred and beyond reproach. Defacing the White
House, harming a Bald Eagle, or burning the Constitution are considered felony offenses, however
desecrating the American Flag is protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Standing on, defacing, and burning of the flag by U.S. citizens only creates public unrest and should
not be allowed.
The Constitution, now comprised of 27 amendments, started out with 10. The First Amendment of the
Constitution states Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting
the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances (Bill of Rights 1).

Sociocultural Perspective On Human Behavior And...
Have you ever wondered why do we do things that we do? Why do we act in a certain way? What
compels us to follow a path or formulate habits? One perspective among many others is the
sociocultural perspective. A sociocultural perspective is an approach to understand why humans
behave the way they do. It seeks to understand human behavior and personality development by
examining the influence of rules of social groups on individuals who are members of those social
groups. Sociocultural approach is an emerging topic that looks at the important contributions that
society makes to an individual. The sociocultural approach is based on the assumption that our
personalities, beliefs, attitudes and skills are learned from others. It refers to a point of view that is
built upon the idea that society and culture are major factors that influence personalities. This
approach believes that people are heavily influenced by their social environment. What makes and
defines us as individuals is the application of sociocultural approach. For example, if you look outside
the window and see a man talking to a tree, what conclusions will you draw? You may think the man
is a lunatic and needs some kind of medication. But would your opinion change if you knew that the
man was Native American and Native Americans believe in a spiritual philosophy that trees can speak
if you listen to them. So you see, the context of culture makes a huge difference in how you ascertain
someone s behavior and that s

The changes of colors and style, hand made fabrics and new styles being creating making the 1960 s
the year of breaking the fashion rules, Barbara Hulanicki the fashion icon made fashion change with
her new designs. Barbara Hulanicki founder of the very popular store front Biba changed the fashion
game when she created clothing for the young generation that she herself could not wear. Her aunt
was not ok with her wearing certain styles so once she got the chance to choose her own fashion she
went with it. Barbara is the best 1960 s fashion designer because she changed fashion with her
youthful urban designed filled clothing ,and is so inspiring for not holding back her style ,and bringing
new things to the table.

After the war everyone seemed dreary and sad,so she wanted to make brighter colors for clothing to
bring some happiness back. Hulanicki clothing were cute and modern and made for everyone not just
upper class. The clothing that she made was really in style and affordable, so not just upper class could
be wearing these trendy clothes but lower classes were able to afford this clothing too, which showed
that even if you don t have lots of money you are still as good as rich people. Barbara started losing
control of Biba when she sold part of it and eventually closed the biba empire. When Biba closed in
1976,Barbara decided to work for fiorucci and cacharel and from 1980 1992 she made a children s

Michelle Obama First Ladies Essay
Only a few weeks ago the United States of America elected their 45th President, but not so many
people took into consideration whom their First Lady would be. Choosing Mr. Trump as their
president, the Americans chose Melania Trump as their future First Lady, taking the place of Michelle
Obama. But will Mrs. Trump complete her duty as the First Lady of the United States, as well as Mrs.
Obama did hers?
The two First Ladies (the actual one and the successor one) come from two different worlds, and
taking into consideration every aspect of their lives, we can definitely say that Mrs. Obama and Mrs.
Trump do change from one another. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was born January 17th
1964, in Chicago, Illinois. Born in a small family, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among her initiatives is Let s Move (2010) a campaign built to fight children obesity which will
remain in effect even after her leaving the White House. Her art programs will still continue working,
under the supervision of the Kennedy Center, but her most lasting legacy will be the tickets attached to
food packaging, which means that food companies (according to some legislation approved in May)
will have to adjust their serving sizes, add sugars to their labels and so on, so this will help consumers
get more informed about the foods they are consuming. (Forbes The World s 100 Most Powerful
Women)
And as the end of the presidential mandate is approaching Mrs. Obama is sure that she will continue to
be part of the campaigns launched during her time. She finds this initiatives close to her heart so that
is why she will keep supporting them. On the other hand, Melania Knauss Trump is a Slovene born
American (April 26th 1970) who built her career as e model. Melania Trump was born in Novo Mesto,
Slovenia in a modest family with two hard working parents. She has a sister and later on she

Utilitarianism In Little Women By Louisa May Alcott
Little Women
By:
Louisa May Alcott
A Victorian literature characteristic shown in Little Women is utilitarianism. This is shown throughout
the book as the four girls, Meg, Beth, Jo, and Amy were so kind and often tried to do things that make
others happy and don t expect anything in return. This characteristic is evident when Beth said I ll tell
you what we ll do, let s each get her (their dear mother) something for Christmas, and not get anything
for ourselves (6). In this scene, the four sisters, who get along beautifully, were sitting by the fire and
when they notice how worn out their mother s slippers were. Initially, they didn t get any gifts or
presents for Christmas since their father was away at war and they had to save money so they decided
to use a little of their hard earned money to each buy something for themselves. But after seeing the
condition of Marmee s slippers, they decide to use their own money to buy something nice for their
mother. This quote shows utilitarianism because the Beth, Meg, Jo, and Amy all give up their own
hard earned money to do something nice and considerate for someone else. Essentially, the four loving
sisters thought of doing something to make someone happy and put themselves aside for a while.
Another Victorian literature characteristic shown in this book is social class structure. This is evident
throughout the entire novel because Meg, Beth, Jo, Amy, and Marmee are all quite poor and face
many different issues

Analysis Of The Brain Is Wider Then The Sky
The poem The Brain is Wider Then the Sky by Emily Dickinson, written in 1862. Emily Dickinson

as well as her loving attentiveness to individuals in times of both suffering and joy. These inquiries

volume includes essays by Paul Crumbley, Karen Dandurand, Jane Donahue Eberwein, Judith Farr,
James Guthrie, Ellen Louise Hart, Eleanor Heginbotham, Cindy MacKenzie, Martha Nell Smith, and
Stephanie Tingley. One of Emily s favorite books was the bible. She referred back to the bible in a lot
of her work. The poem The Brain is Wider Then the Sky can be interpreted in many different ways. If
you have knowledge of Emily Dickinson back round you may interpret it differently than others who
do not know much about her life and upbringing. This poem is a four line stanza, most of her work

  • 2. Bruce Springsteen s Song Born In The USA Ask anyone during the mid 1980 s and I can promise you they have heard Born in the U.S.A by Bruce Springsteen. Written in 1984, this record setting single was the theme song for America during the Vietnam war. Born in the U.S.A swept the nation by storm, selling 18 million copies. Every American may know to scream as loud as they can when the lyrics BORN IN THE U.S.A come on, but they may not necessarily know the true meaning behind the song. Many think it s a song about patriotism, but it s actually a song that shows the cruel treatment that Vietnam veterans received upon returning home. This widely supported song deals with the negative effects of the Vietnam War on Americans and the cruel mistreatment of Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the song, Bruce sings, Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand, sent me off to a foreign land, to go and kill the yellow man ( Born In The U.S.A. Lyrics. ). This is referring to when the government sent soldiers over to Vietnam to kill the Viet Cong. The song continues to scream patriotism as shown in the repeated lyrics Born in the U.S.A . The song then goes into the struggles for Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. It then continues to talk about the hardship these veterans faced when looking for a job. No one at the time wanted to hire anyone who was affiliated with the war because many Americans were against it. The song then goes into talking about one of this buddies who went over to fight the Viet Cong. Bruce sings about how the Viet Cong is still there and he died in an effort to defeat them. This not only talks about one person who died, it is also a representation of all soldiers who lost their lives during the war. This song was not only a song intended to raise Americans patriotism, it also showed the hardships Vietnam veterans had to face both over seas, as well as back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Main Characters Of The Pianist s The Pianist The Pianist is based on the true story of a renowned Polish Jewish musician who lived through World War 2 in Warsaw, Poland. At the start of the war, Jewish families had to wear white arm bands with a blue Star of David and were only allowed a small amount of money. Families were sent off to concentration camps in packed railroad cars and the families who remained in Warsaw starved to death. The only reason why the main character, Wladyslaw Szpilman, was able to survive was through the people who helped give him food, shelter and basic necessities. The kindness of others helped Wladyslaw survive through the wartimes. Kindness is defined as, an individual that possesses a sympathetic or helpful nature. One of the main themes within The Pianist is that kindness can be found in the most unexpected places, even in Nazi Germany. Wladyslaw Szpilman found help from countless people, even from Germans who were not Jewish. Irena Sendler was a social worker who lived in Warsaw. She was a part of the Polish Underground and a Holocaust resistance. It is estimated that she saved more than 2,000 Jewish children from the Ghetto. She was awarded the Righteous among the Nations in 1965. Irena Sendler said, To save one Jewish child, ten Poles and two Jews had to risk death. To betray that same child and the family that hid him required only one informer or, worse still, one blackmailer. The risk of being caught by the SS was not prison, but death death for the entire family. (Sendler) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The United States And The European Union Europe was constantly in civil conflict with each other prior to the aftermath of World War II. However, at the end of World War II, it became evident that the United States would dominate global politics. In fact, much of the foreign policy implemented throughout the world were simply just the goals of the United States and the United States did become the major geopolitical hegemon directing international policies which other countries would follow. In simpler terms, the United States frequently exercised power throughout the 20th century. However, with the emergence of the European Union and it s recent economic rise rivaling that of the United States, some scholars begin to question whether the United States will be able to maintain its role in the international arena and what the role of the European Union will be. Thus, the question must be asked, Will the European Union run the 21st century? Viewing this through an economic lens, the European Union will run the 21st century because of other regions adopting its economic model, the sheer size of the EU economy, and its overall economic influence and power. First, it is important to examine the readings regarding the European Union s foreign policy. Here are some general explanations on the arguments from the following readings about the EU and its role in the 21st century. Kagan argues that the European Union will not run the 21st century. His reasoning is that although the EU is an economic power, it lacks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Legal Field At Point Park University Yogi Berra believed that, Baseball is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical. From my tenure as a college softball pitcher at Point Park University, I learned how imperative being mentally sound is to the game of softball. The legal field is a very demanding field. I know my experiences gained on the diamond will allow me to flourish in a field dependent upon mental toughness. Foremost, being a pitcher made me realize how important it is to have a short term memory. When I was on the mound, I knew that the result of the previous batter had no bearing on what the next batter would do. For example, when I gave up a big hit, before the next batter came to the plate, I had to forget about what just happened. In softball, it is important to not dwell on the negatives, but learn from them. Because of pitching, I know yesterday s failures can turn into tomorrow s successes. I plan to have the same attitude in the legal field when obstacles come my way. In addition, pitching has taught me that there are some things in life that I will never be able to control. Success on the mound is dependent on a variety of factors. Umpires, field conditions, the weather, and plays my team made all had an impact on the on the outcome of a game. When it was raining, I understood that I had no control over the weather. However, I could make small adjustments to my routine to preform better in unfavorable conditions. In a similar manner, when an umpire made a call I did not agree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. American Film and Movies from the 1950’s to Present Essay... American Film and Movies from the 1950 s to Present Today, American film is among the most internationally supported commodities. Financially, its contributions are enormous: the industry is responsible for the circulation of billions of dollars each year. Since its explosion into the new media markets during the mid twentieth century, film has produced consistently growing numbers of viewers and critics alike. Sparking debate over the nature of its viewing, film is now being questioned in social, political, and moral arenas for its potential impact on an audience. Critics claim that watching films is a passive activity in which the viewer becomes subconsciously absorbed, and creates a reliance or addiction to the medium, and thus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As described by Francis Couvares, films needed to be censored precisely because they arouse strong desires and strong antipathies in an untrustworthy public. Advocates of censorship insisted that movies directly affected behaviour, usually for ill, creating general crisis and confusion over the moral implications of the medium. Charting movie attendance rates, for example, the WCTV (Women s Christian Temperance Union) of the 1950s argued that youths were in a greater danger of becoming addicted to movies than they were of becoming addicted to alcohol. An examination of the film by decade reveals that although advocates of censorship insisted that movies directly affected human behaviour, usually for the ill, the following fifty years of film discourse in America was further enhanced by the blurred lines over the social and moral accountability of the medium. The 1950s were rife with paradoxes: they were a time of prosperity and poverty, and of freedom and discrimination. The Cold War, the civil rights movement, suburbanization, the Beat generation, rock and roll, and the rise of television were all landmarks of the mid century decade. Filmmakers interpreted the era s most provocative and often contradictory issues for a mass audience; McCarthyism, optimism and pessimism about the future, women s consciousness and ... Designed differently quickly identified position, kings, lords, nobles, knights and peasants. Nonetheless, clothing was warm and comfortable and always suited for battle. It appears the fashion design switched because currently lady s garments resemble the men of the medieval era. Yet during that period, lady s gothic robes swept the floor surrounded with a matching scarf and cape. The chosen cloth, whether for men or women, usually radiant in color, portrayed the crafty work prepared by selected seamstress (Bednarz, Miyares, Schug, amp; White, 2006). Just like the clothing, the characteristics of military during the Battle of Hastings, differed from current warfare. Soldiers dressed in heavy attire such as chains, helmets, and plated armor. This warfare excluded guns such as AK47 assault rifles and shot guns; after all, these inventions waited discovery. Even gun power evaded battle as it too had not surfaced the scene. • 13. Analysis Of Consider The Lobster Consideration: thoughtful of the rights and feelings of others How do you consider the lobster? David Foster Wallace wrote the essay Consider the Lobster. After the reading, the essay for the first time the thoughts that went through my head consisted of how the lobsters were treated and what Wallace thought of the lobsters. The lobsters are chosen out of usually a pot or a giant tank and then boiled to death. They are placed into a pot of boiling hot water and the saying that the lobsters are screaming in the pot comes to be true. Some people find it disturbing to listen to the sound while others cover the pot and not let it bother them. Also, from the first reading I thought that Wallace was being somewhat hypocritical because I got the idea that it was acceptable for him to eat and coo ketch lobsters but seeing it done in the setting of a restaurant, in a larger quantity makes it worse. Gathering all this information again had made me rethink the essay and look towards the deeper meaning. Wallace committed suicide in 2008 due to mental illness. So, when we consider the lobster does it mean that to be considerate of it? Another point I came to was about was mental illness and how in 2008 Wallace committed suicide. When lobsters are chosen and boiled to eat, those people are sending them to their grave . So, what does being considerate consist of when discussing a lobster, a dead body and the food we are about to eat? Jessica Mitford wrote the essay The Story of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The Electronic Medical Record ( Emr ) Meaningful Use and its Development The electronic medical record (EMR) is the replacement of paper manual charts and is being used all across the country. As per Hebda and Czar (2013), the EMR is the building block of the electronic health record (EHR), which can be defined as a longitudinal record that includes client data, demographics, clinician notes, medications, diagnostic findings, and other essential healthcare information (p.293). The widespread use of EHR s in America is foreseeable and inevitably unavoidable, but by no means a simple and undoubtedly an effortless task to achieve. In an attempt to reduce costs in the introduction, conversion, and implementation of patient health records the government has provided regulations for meaningful use (MU) (p.280). In the attempt to improve the safety and quality of the nation s healthcare system, the government enacted the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. The HITECH Act is part of the American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA), enacted on February 17, 2009, which includes many measures intended to modernize the nation s infrastructure (cdc.gov.). The HITECH Act, encourages the use of EHR s meaningful use in order to reduce the redundancy of data entry with integration and interoperability. • 15. Rappaccini s Daughter And The Birthmark By Nathaniel... The Interrogated Science Science is one of the most important factors that many science fictions deal with. Some of them describe the positive and useful side of science such as the description of sciences like mathematics, physics, chemistry and many other fields of study. While some of the other science fictions describe the dangerous sides of science that can hurt and even kill human beings. Concerning this idea, Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the American writers of the mid nineteenth century who writes about art and science. This paper will describe the sort of science that need to be interrogated and how is combined by comparing Rappaccini s daughter and The Birthmark by the role of the scientists, Dr. Aylmer and Dr. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aylmer tried to convince his wife with a plan that achieves her happiness by enjoying the perfect beauty. His gambles started when he was isolated with his wife in an apartment provided with a laboratory. It was a symbol of his discoveries of the elemental power of nature. This time, Georgian was one of the elements Aylmer used to discover the physiological truth by his plan of removing his wife s mark. As compared to Dr. Aylmer, Dr. Rappacini is also a skilled physician who makes a different scientific experiment on both human beings and plants. He is a famous doctor by which his name is heard as far as Naples. He makes a medication from strange plants like collecting the strange flowers in his garden. Signor Pietro Baglioni, one of the main characters of Rappaccini s Daughter story, describes Doctor Rappaccini when he says: Doctor Rappaccini has as much science as any member of the faculty with perhaps one single exception in Padua or all Italy. But there are certain grave objections to his professional character (Hawthrone 4). It means that Doctor Rappaccini is as far as he is a good scientist, he has some issues with his character. One of these issues, as Dr. Aylmer has, is his concentration on science more than mankind (4). He deals with his patients as if they are only experiments. Comparing The Congruence Of Shakespeare And Montaigne The Congruence of Shakespeare and Montaigne Envision living in a nation that has achieved the paramount form of society, one that is ideal in its ethical, social, and political facets. Simple to imagine but impossible to replicate, and that is, according to Plato s Theory of Forms, because the physical world is a poor copy of these ideas, these forms, even the ones closest to perfection are imperfect. That is why a utopia can not be attained in reality. Although, in Montaigne s Of Cannibals, it is proposed that the natural state is the closest to accomplishing this. The ideas set forth in this work, chiefly the concept of cultural relativism, influenced Shakespeare in his writing of The Tempest, and the characters Gonzalo and Caliban portray ... Caliban is subjected to a way of thought that is utterly new to him, given to him from Miranda and Propsero, and it is said by Montaigne that those who think and act in these way are savage, not just those who they imposed these ideas upon simply because in their eyes they were deemed as savage. Even though Caliban is a slave to Prospero and had wicked notions towards him, it is only because his natural state was altered, which can sometimes lead to an opposite effect than intended. Montaigne also describes that a nation that is closest to perfection is one with no knowledge of political systems, letters, numbers etcetera, and Shakespeare concurs with this through representing it in Gonzalo, who contemplates that if he had the island to rule, he would rule congruently with Montaigne s belief. For this lack of a requirement presence, many critics at times call assisted living fraudulent, with areas of neglect and false promises. iv While the current crisis of a staffing problem rages through the LTC labor force, programs are struggling to staff at levels that the current law and obvious sense ... • 20. Contradictions in Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales Essay Contradictions in Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales There is no question that contradictory values make up a major component of The Canterbury Tales. Fate vs. Fortuna, knowledge vs. experience and love vs. hate all embody Chaucer s famous work. These contrasting themes are an integral part of the complexity and sophistication of the book, as they provide for an ironic dichotomy to the creative plot development and undermine the superficial assumptions that might be made. The combination of completely contradictory motifs leads to the unusual stories and outcomes that come to play out in the tales. And these outcomes draw focus on the larger universal issues that in many cases transcend the boundaries of vernacular periods to all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the debate, a number of different options have emerged. Some, like medieval author Paul Ruggiers, argue that it is impossible to determine the Prioress?s attitude and that, ?we must be satisfied with ambiguity.? Others like writer Victoria Wickham argue the most popular belief, that the Prioress?s bigotry is without question and readers should be more concerned about the degree rather than the fact itself. But there is another possibility. Edwards and Spector, two prominent medieval scholars, put aside the issue of racism temporarily and instead offer an alternative interpretation on the very nature of Chaucer?s love hate contradiction in the Prioress?s tale. They argue that the love vs. hate contradiction is not dependent on outside forces, but is actually an internal conflict within the Prioress herself. Consequently, the individuals and subsequent groups in her tale are not specific characters but culturally influenced manifestations representing separate issues. In this way her personality becomes the allegory of her tale, making specific references within her story irrelevant to her true attitude. In this writer?s opinion, popular attitudes on the nature of the love hate contradiction in the Prioress?s tale are wrong; Edwards and Stevens help prove this. Rather than considering the most obvious stand alone factors of love and hate in the story, specifically the description of the Prioress and her affinity for Christianity vs. the evil ... It details the life of Margery Kempe a middle class woman who lived during the late medieval period with special attention being paid to her activities as a mystic. In addition the various pilgrimages she undertook are covered in detail and come to fill a good part of the autobiography. Being considered the first english autobiography also raises some questions about the work, such as whether or not it is truly an autobiography as well as how the religious mysticism present in the text is portrayed. In addition to these questions the work can also provides a view into the the restrictions society placed upon women of the era and whether or not the author s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The religious mysticism of Margery Kempe is one of the central themes presented in the text being present from the initial chapters and serving as the catalyst for many events that occur throughout the work. The portrayal of Kempe s religious mysticism is primarily positive with most conflict being used to support and showcase her mysticism. Typically these conflicts revolve around the skepticism and disbelief by those who doubt her abilities sometimes even being called a heretic. These skeptics usually then encounter an event focused around Margery that changes their mind turning them into argent supporters. An example of this from early in the work is Margery s encounter with a monk of renown who is described as despising her. This same monk later comes to support her after she tells him of the sins he has committed despite having no prior knowledge of them. In addition to the portrayal of her mysticism the question of whether it appears to be based more upon logic or emotion arises. Based upon the evidence present in the text one can conclude that her mysticism is primarily based on emotion. The language use in the text is the strongest evidence for this conclusion with a good example coming in the sixty fourth chapter of the first book. Words such as love, sweet, and joy are used several times throughout the chapter emphasizing the emotion present in her mysticism. In addition to the language use Kempe s refusal to avoid situations that would be complicated by her mysticism serves as additional evidence. One such event occurred during her travels when she clashed repeatedly with her companions over her weeping causing them to be harsh with her. The logical action in this situation would be to try and appease her companions in order to make the journey more bearable. Kempe however does not do this, instead making the emotional ... There were little decorations in the passages, perhaps because scene passages represented the essence of the novel, the darkest parts of it, whereas it needs to be concrete, no unnecessary fuss like alliteration and other literary devices that are found much more in other kinds of novels and other parts of horror novels, especially Dracula. Dracula is much older than IT, the social context of the book depicts a world of differences. Stoker made extreme use of langual flattery but as there were dangerous conflicts, he needed to leave some of that out to ensure that the reader s attention would not fade. The boat scene was obviously a different technique but that was because it was written as a to the point writing captain who suddenly had so much more to describe, it was also needed for later clarification to enclose what happened on the boat. It eventually comes together to form a unique blanket that incorporates a multi dimensional group of different pieces of colors and sizes in its final product. The maternal aspect of the quilt, represents the Euro colonial influence that was responsible for the colonialization of the Caribbean region. All patches have their own unique shape and design, and eventually come together to make a fragmented image on the quilt. The fragmented image, created by different colors, shapes and patterns, represent the different cultures and races that are all interrelated to each other in the Caribbean. And each individual patch, represents a different island nation, and the thread, cotton and embroidery that weaves the patches together, represents the languages and ideologies that have come together over the course of history, to bond these island nations together. Today, however, the Caribbean countries struggle a great deal with human development. These struggles have arisen as a result of the lack of unity in self identity, with respect to the idea of fragmentation. Mintz describes fragmentation to be a patchwork quilt of societies and cultures, which arose through the colonization and exploitation of the Caribbean region. • 29. Sociocultural Perspective On Human Behavior And... Have you ever wondered why do we do things that we do? Why do we act in a certain way? What compels us to follow a path or formulate habits? One perspective among many others is the sociocultural perspective. A sociocultural perspective is an approach to understand why humans behave the way they do. It seeks to understand human behavior and personality development by examining the influence of rules of social groups on individuals who are members of those social groups. Sociocultural approach is an emerging topic that looks at the important contributions that society makes to an individual. The sociocultural approach is based on the assumption that our personalities, beliefs, attitudes and skills are learned from others. It refers to a point of view that is built upon the idea that society and culture are major factors that influence personalities. This approach believes that people are heavily influenced by their social environment. What makes and defines us as individuals is the application of sociocultural approach. For example, if you look outside the window and see a man talking to a tree, what conclusions will you draw? You may think the man is a lunatic and needs some kind of medication. But would your opinion change if you knew that the man was Native American and Native Americans believe in a spiritual philosophy that trees can speak if you listen to them. This is shown throughout the book as the four girls, Meg, Beth, Jo, and Amy were so kind and often tried to do things that make others happy and don t expect anything in return. This characteristic is evident when Beth said I ll tell you what we ll do, let s each get her (their dear mother) something for Christmas, and not get anything for ourselves (6). In this scene, the four sisters, who get along beautifully, were sitting by the fire and when they notice how worn out their mother s slippers were. But after seeing the condition of Marmee s slippers, they decide to use their own money to buy something nice for their mother. This quote shows utilitarianism because the Beth, Meg, Jo, and Amy all give up their own hard earned money to do something nice and considerate for someone else. Essentially, the four loving sisters thought of doing something to make someone happy and put themselves aside for a while.
