This report has been conducted on the East Asia region based on the information provided by the
universities of Kansas State and Massey. The focus of this report is to identify and describe important
characteristics, issues and trends of the region from an agricultural perspective. To provide an
introduction and insight first a brief summary of East Asia will be provided.
East Asia includes approximately 15 countries, within this there is a population of 1.974 billion
people. Of the total population 51% live within rural areas resulting in agriculture making up 11% of
GDP, which is considerably more than the likes of the US (1% of GDP). There is considerable
diversity between countries within East Asia. There are major differences between country s GDP per
capita and economic development, resulting in distinctive high, middle and low per capita GDP
groups as shown in figure 1. New Zealand in comparison would be in the high per capita group with a
GDP of $36,200. The East Asia countries in which agriculture makes up largest proportion of their
GDP are within the lower to middle GDP band and are Vietnam with 22%, Indonesia with 15% and
Thailand with 12%. Whereas in comparison to the likes of Japan who has the highest GDP per capita
within the region, agriculture only represents 1%. It can also be seen that the risk of investment
increases in East Asia as incomes reduce and that the middle income countries have considerable
growth potential.

Native Americans were the first civilization in America this means that they do not know how things
were made yet. That caused them to tell stories called myths about how the Earth came to be and how
mountains were made. Myths got passed down from generation to generation and often got changed as
the word passes on. These myths are still around and being told today but just as historical background
to study them. Native American myths have common traits such as characters, morals, and the pattern

Through group brainstorming, we came up with a number of variables that theoretically should affect
the price of crude oil, and we used Bloomberg to find data on the same. Our two main criteria for a
good variable were statistical significance and R2. We conducted a regression analysis as well as
multiple regression analysis to double check the variables we selected on the Bloomberg terminal.
Moreover, so as to not omit any good variables, we broadened our search to the Oil commodity
section to find relevant industry reports and prospective variables. Through a process of rough trial
and error, and after eliminating several variables due to problems such as multicollinearity and
heteroskedasticity, we finalized the three variables that are mentioned below.
As crude oil is invoiced in USD, it is of interest to note how fluctuations in the value of the USD
affect oil prices. Another of our factors is the price of natural gas, the closest substitute as a source of
energy to oil. Lastly, we seek to establish a relationship between returns in the S P500 and oil prices.
We used monthly time series data over a period of ten years beginning from 2005 for the purpose of
this study. To avoid issues of non stationary data, we used oil price returns and S P500 returns.
