Washington Irving Essay
Washington Irving
Diedrich Knickerbocker; Geoffrey Crayon; Henry A. Buchanan; Jonathan Oldstyle. All were famous
writers of the nineteenth century. All had one important thing in common they are all one man
Washington Irving. Using these pen names, among many, Irving developed a legacy of utilizing
European culture to cultivate American aspects of literature.
Fred Lewis Pattee asserted, American short story began in 1819 wit Washington Irving. (Gale Group
4) Irving is best known for his fictional works. These pieces include the popular The Legend of Sleepy
Hollow , Rip Van Winkle , and The Devil and Tom Walker . Each of these works left a mark on
American fictional literature. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , from The ... Show more content on

A comment made by Irving himself expressed his feelings towards his characters:
I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories. (From Tales of a Traveler,
1824) (Oldstyle 1)
This comment is used to show the significance of Irving s fictional works to American literature. He
used styles such as manipulation and imagery to captivate the reader. Imagery such as in Chapter 1 of
Rip Van Winkle is enchanting and grabs the reader:
When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines
on the clear evening sky; but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather
a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and
light up like a crown of glory. (Knickerbocker 2)
This sentence, alone, shows his technique in which gives to reader a picture of what is taking place in
the piece. This style is typical now and is among many that has been brought or shared through
Washington Irving s fictional works, as well as his European experiences have brought life to his non
fictional pieces. During the seventeen years he spent in Europe (following his mother s death Sarah
Sanders Irving) from 1815 to 1832, Irving not only served many diplomatic purposes, but many (of
course) literal as well. Irving was fascinated by Spain. During his stay there, he wrote Columbus

Is Third Worlld Immigration a Threat to Americas Way of Life
Is Third Worlld Immigration a Threat to Americas Way of Life
Is Third world immigration a threat to America s way of life? I do not believe it is. I agree with
Isbister. He argues that cultural impacts of immigration are positive, constructive changes, that most
Americans will benefit from living in a more multicultural society, and that tension between the
different ethnic groups can be alleviated. I for one am a Filipino American and proud of it. My parents
came to America from the Philippines to make a better life for themselves. They came here for the so
called American Dream. My parents believed in all the sayings about The Land of Opportunity and
The Land of Milk and Honey. I honestly believe that they have made their ... Show more content on

One reason why people oppose it is because they believe that immigrants may take away jobs from
American workers. Another issue is that they believe immigrants may cause the country to break up
into separate cultural units, thus destroying America s unity. Lastly, people say that immigrants are a
fiscal burden. Isbister tells us that cross sectional studies show that immigration has little if any impact
on the wages and employment opportunities of residents, even residents who are unskilled, low paid,
or racial minorities. This and other cross sectional empirical studies show that immigration quite
possibly may have little or no effect at all on employment and wages of current residents. In regards to
the issue that immigrants may try to break the country up into separate units. I believe this is
preposterous. I think that the only reason why people believe in this is because they are ignorant to
other cultures and feel threatened because of their differences. I think that Isbister said it best with the
this statement, The essence of American life is that it is composed of different groups, different
cultures, races, religions, attitudes, folkways and ideologies, differences that give the country its
distinctiveness. In concern with the issue that immigrants are a fiscal burden there is no proof that this
is true. There have been studies made that claim ...immigrants have not been a burden to U.S.
governments that government expenditures on the immigrants

Government Policies Set Up By The Ussr
Government policies set up by the USSR, especially the New Economic Policy and Five Year Plans
had a major effect on the industrial growth and development in the USSR both due to their focused
end goal and the unification of the party being able to enforce these policies. However, the Five year
plans can be seen as a more successful policy in promoting industrial development, as statistics show a
that it resulted in a greater growth of development and industrial development of the USSR than any
other government policy. The Five Year Plan can be seen as the leading government policy in
promoting industrial development. Set up in 1928 32 its goal was to propel the USSR into becoming a

To achieve this, targets were set for every industry, each region, each mine and factor and every
worker fined if targets were not met. With a clear goal and targets to reach the FYP meant many poor
peasants in rural areas of the USSR began to migrate to urban areas. Cities sprung up from nothing,
allowing more workers to move to these developing areas in search for money a success in promoting
industrial development, as without workers willing to relocate and work, industrial development
would not have been possible. The Five year plan was a huge success in promoting industrial
development, coal production quadrupled from 1927 (35 million tons) to 150 million by 1940,
followed by steel increasing six times and then followed by electricity. These key aspects provided the
basis for the USSR military economy, allowing the Soviets to turn the tables and drive out the
Germans by being able to supply the factories with an every growing demand of electricity, parts for
tanks, weapons, goods and machinery could all be manufactured to succeed in industrial development
of the USSR, the USSR was turned into a modern state, which resultantly could resist Hitler s
invasion. However, the FYP does have its failures. The over ambitious targets set out by the FYP, in
terms of producing goods over the USSR production possibility meant many targets were over
exaggerated and false to avoid penalty. Moreover, this led to inefficiencies as

Foreshadowing In A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essay
Flannery O Conner in the story A good man is hard to find have impress her readers by the unexpected
violence at the end of the story. However, when the story is read a second time it s expected she gives
the readers hints during the story this technique is called foreshadowing that tease readers about an
event that will occur at the ending of the story. There are various times that O Conner uses this
technique.
In the beginning of the story the grandmother disagrees with her son Bayley on going to Florida, she

Ignorance In Flowers For Algernon
The novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is an excellent written novel that has deep meaning
to it. The novel is about a 32 year old man named Charlie Gordon who is mentally disabled, and he
goes through a medical procedure which enhances his knowledge. Throughout the novel, all Charlie
wants to be is normal. Charlie just wants to fit in, have friends, and make his parents proud. Charlie is
the first person ever to go through this surgery so he is going through a journey that only he has
experienced. In the novel, Charlie s operation is based off of a similar operation that was performed on
a mouse called Algernon and the things that happen to Algernon usually end up happening to Charlie.
As Charlie s intelligence increases he goes through struggles that affect his relationships and his views
on life. Charlie experiences and remembers things that have happened previously in his life and his
ultimate goal is to learn his past. At the end of the novel Charlie starts to lose his intelligence which
results in his ultimate demise. Depending on the situation, ignorance is bliss, however, there are other
scenarios where knowing the whole truth regardless of the consequences is also beneficial.
To begin with, ignorance in certain situations is bliss and sometimes not knowing the whole truth is
better than knowing all of it. This is certainly the case for Charlie because in the beginning of the
novel Charlie s intelligence is very low and he doesn t understand what is going

Differences in Crime Statistics in the Uniform Crime...
Arguments over crime statistics have been raging ever since governments began counting criminal
activity. In 1930 the United States congress authorized the attorney general of the United States to
survey crime in America. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was chosen to implement the program.
(Schmalleger p.38)
The Uniform Crime Reports is the survey taken by the FBI. This measure of crime in America
depends on reports to the police by victims of crimes. The UCR Program was developed by the FBI
for the purpose of serving law enforcement as a tool for operational and administrative purposes.
Through the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the UCR Program was developed.
Later, the National Sheriffs Association ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Arson is an exception to the Hierarchy Rule . One of the problems with the Uniform Crime Reports is
that many citizens do not always make official reports. For example, many women refuse to report
rapes because they do not want to relive the ordeal. Some citizen s feel that the police will not be able
to do anything about a crime committed against them therefore they do not report it. Another problem
with the Uniform Crime Reports is that Victimless crimes are rarely reported. These are crimes like
prostitution, gambling, and drug use. Since many of these crimes are not reported, then the UCR
becomes somewhat vague and incomplete.
When reviewing crime data, it is important for the reader to note the difference between offenses and
arrests. Offenses relate to events and arrests relate to persons. A single offense may involve no
arrestees; may involve one arrestee; or may involve many arrestees. National Crime Victimization
Survey (NCVS) is the Nation s primary source of information on criminal victimization. Twice each
year, data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of roughly 49,000 households
comprising about 100,000 persons on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal
victimization in the United States. The survey reports the likelihood of victimization by rape, sexual
assault, robbery,

The greatness of Alexander III, as he was originally, has been disputed in the past. His legend has
survived for thousands of years, and his name is well known, but just how great was he? In answering
this question it is necessary to define the terms deserve and great . For these purposes, to deserve will
mean to be worthy of. Great has many meanings, and will be defined as: important; grand;
distinguished; remarkable in ability or character; competent; or above what is normal, with implied
admiration. Alexander, son of Philip, the king of the Macedonians, was more than most men. His
achievements were admirable, and his success brilliant. His accomplishments were grand, momentous

Alexander had remarkable ability, and so was great in many different ways. On top of doing great
things, Alexander was a great leader, and a political and military genius. His goal to conquer Persia
was one that he would let nothing stand in the way of. As leader of his troops, he suffered their same
wounds, being one of the last great leaders to personally take the risk of death in battle. Alexander
listened to every man he had, and so became very close to his men. Some argue his ability in
motivating and inspiring his men was in fact the greatest ever seen, half defeating the opposition in
nerves before a battle began. He was also remarkable with military tactics, employing strategies still
used today. As the Encarta Encyclopedia put it: Alexander was one of the greatest generals of all time,
noted for his brilliance as a tactician and troop leader and for the rapidity with which he could traverse
great expanses... He succeeded politically as well, earning respect from many people. Alexander s
charisma and adoption of Persian customs gave him strong loyalty needed in order to control his
massive empire. However, the greatness in his work here is questionable: often he used brutal force,
sometimes killing thousands of civilians, or selling them into slavery. But overall, Alexander must be
seen as great man in terms of a leader and a military commander. There is one major area of Alexander
where heated debates often occur: his character and

George Gershwin Essay
George Gershwin was born Jacob Gershowitz on September 26, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. George
began his professional career in quot;Tin Pan Alley, quot; a location in New York City where aspiring
composers and songwriters would bring their scores to a publisher trying to sell the tunes for cash.
Two years after he started work for Jerome Remick, George had his first song published. quot; When
You Want Em You Can t Get Em quot; was not an instantly famous, but it did begin to attract the
attention of some of the Broadway composers of the day. During this time of professional growth,
George kept his job as a rehearsal pianist and studied piano, theory and orchestration with the best of
the best. George s first big hit was a song ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Songs featured from these musicals include quot;Clap Yo Hands, quot; quot;Strike Up the Band quot;
and one which has enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity, quot;Someone to Watch Over Me. quot;
Despite his success on Broadway, George decided to follow his success of Rhapsody in Blue with a
few more pieces for piano and orchestra as well as piano solo, including Concerto in F (1925),
Preludes for Piano (1926), and An American in Paris (1928). An American in Paris, which was written
after George took a trip to the French city, is a tone poem, which transports the listener to the streets of
Paris during the 1920 s. In efforts to paint a realistic portrait of the quot;City of Lights. quot; An
American in Paris represents the second most popular work for orchestra written by George. George
became one of America s first premier composers and his compositions are still used today by teachers
everywhere as examples of the American entrance to the musical world of Stravinsky, Chopin,
Beethoven, and Mozart.
When George started to forget portions of his compositions while performing them, his friends and
family encouraged him to see a physician. Doctors informed him that he had a brain tumor and
suggested emergency surgery. Unfortunately, George did not survive the surgery and died on July 11,

Virginia V. Texas, The Supreme Court Upheld The...
In Fisher v Texas, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of special admissions programs; but
this could only be done under strict judicial scrutiny, and with narrowly tailored provisions. Two
separate questions stem from this: What does narrowly tailoring mean in light of the 14th
Amendment? And how can other universities implement admission standards that are constitutionally
permissible? Short Answer Grutter and Gratz established that race could be a factor in the admissions
process. But it must pass strict scrutiny. At first blush, this might appear discriminatory. But if there is
a compelling government interest, then it is not covered by the Equal Protection Clause, in the
Fourteenth Amendment. So to pass strict scrutiny ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because schools have a rational reason for excluding certain individuals. It cannot accept every
student, so schools must have the ability to sift through applicants. For example, test scores, GPA,
extracurricular activities, and the like, can be used when considering an applicants file. In short, this in
no way perverts or violates the Equal Protection Clause; schools have a reasonable interest in denying
certain applicants because they cannot admit every student that applies. Discussion of Cases: How the
Court Applied Strict Scrutiny When a University implements special admissions requirements, like
race and ethnicity, the Court called for the most exacting judicial scrutiny when reviewing cases of
this nature (Bakke v U.S.). For this, the rational basis test is faulty. Strict scrutiny is prescribed to
examine race cases. The Court visited this topic in two separate cases: Grutter v Bollinger and Gratz v
Bollinger. Grutter examined admissions requirements for Michigan Law School, and Gratz examined
Michigan undergraduate requirements. Once again, emphasis was placed on applying strict scrutiny
when race plays a factor in admissions. The court also established the need for narrowly tailored
provisions when implementing such programs. In Grutter, the court re emphasized the fact that
cultivating a diverse student body was a compelling state interest. And according to Chief Justice
Rehnquist, student body diversity is a compelling state

To what extent was Themistocles responsible for the Greek victory in the Persian Wars? Daniel Ashby
Themistocles was responsible for the Greek victory in the Persian wars to a considerable extent. The
key to Athens strength in the 5th Century BC was in this general and statesman and therefore, as
Greek victory relied so heavily on Athens, Themistocles vitally contributed to the outcome of the
Persian king s invasion of 480 479 BC. His early life reflects the character and skills developed that
were responsible for these contributions. Five pivotal roles he undertook were of varying degrees

To a certain degree the characteristics of his youth, despite his own affirmation of breaking and
training , beneficially prevail to adulthood. The roman biographer Cornelius Nepos ascertains that The
vices of his early youth were compensated by great virtues . These same vices, his impulsive attitude
in the public life, were responsible for the very virtuous achievements he is referring to. In fact these
character traits foreshadow the decisions he would make years later in the Persian Wars.
Comparatively, his impulsiveness matured into a cunning and uncontrollable determination in the face
of authority. He was cleverly deceitful in the construction of a fleet of triremes, he was
uncompromising against the Spartan commander Eurybiades at the first gathering at Corinth in 480
BC, and he was determined to get his own way in vital battles such as Salamis and Artemisium
whether that required deceiving those authorities above him or not. Plutarch, Nepos, and Themistocles
himself all refer to a degree of uncontrollable yet cunning determination that serves a great purpose in
Greece s victory over Persia. Above all this, while he was still a youth public affairs laid their grasp
upon Themistocles. Plutarch also describes that while other boys would entertain themselves and
indulge in leisurely activities, Themistocles would be composing and rehearsing to himself mock

Pollution In Air Pollution
Demolition and Construction sites are bad when it comes to the control of particulates causing an
increase in air pollution. The particulates can be emitted by the process of knocking down or
disturbing the building letting the particulate free and get into the air reducing the quality. If the
workers do not manage what they are doing correctly, it can have harmful impacts on not only their
health but the communities and the environment. At times enforcing the laws and good practice can be
expensive and very disruptive. The legislation includes things like Identifying activities that create
pollution, Environmental risk assessment, selecting low emission materials and getting the right
training and using the proper methods. But what is classified as particulates and what are they? They
can be very broad but things such as Dust and asbestos from knocking buildings down that can float
away causing harm to the environment, and people s health, motor vehicle emissions and smoke from
power tools also can have a significant impact.
There are many ways in which emissions can be controlled including things such as Demolition
workers can Water down the building as they are knocking it down to weigh down the particulates.
Using the water to weigh down particualtes can be harmfull, as if the workers use to much water to
weigh down this particualtes it can cause run off. This run off can end up in the river sytems and throw
this way the particualtes can polute and cause harm to the enviroment and the animals in th eater.
Workers can also time it to the wind, i.e. on windy days don t do work that will cause a lot of
particulates to float around. They can even be aware of the environment in which they are working in
and know the restrictions and the history s (mainly for older homes) of other houses to get a broader
idea if the particulates cause more harm than a newer house might. For things such as Sanding,
grinding and welding the workers can also use water to weigh down the particulates or use a type of
grad method to trap the particulates. There are many more methods to different kinds of activities that
may occur, but they are all mainly using the same type of techniques.
But on the other hand, implementing these

I m different because everyone else is not me. This as written by Julian Aguilar, a famous screenwriter

and sometimes, the whole school, but I made it through and even got into GATE. That s what this

anymore, I m an older girl! I exclaimed. That s right pumpkin, my mom gave me a huge bear hug.

Alcopops Tax
Question 1
Some economists argue that one of the key political motivations for the introduction of the alcopops
tax is to correct for the negative externalities which abusers of alcopops impose on society. Using
diagram(s) discuss how a tax on alcopops can correct for negative externalities associated with
excessive consumption of alcopops.
In a publication by University of Southern Queensland (2008), it defines that excise taxes are taxes
imposed on sellers of certain goods and services, and they are usually substantially higher tan sales tax
on regular goods . Moreover, tax incidence is the share of a tax ultimately paid by consumers or by
buyers (Layton, Robinson amp; Tucker 2005). It depends on both elasticities of demand and ... Show

Persuasive Speech On Veganism And Vebesity
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United
States? 735,000 people have a heart attack each year and ¼ of the deaths in the U.S. are because of
heart related issues. To make one quarter pound hamburger, we use 6.7 pounds of feed, 52.8 gallons of
water, 74.5 sq. feet of land and that s not even including the methane emissions from the animals
digestive system that is put into the environment. Are these two related you may ask? And I have an
answer for you, yes they are! Every time you eat red meat in any form, your cholesterol and saturated
fat levels will spike and raise your blood cholesterol level. In more simple terms, with every piece of
red meat you eat you raise your chance of having a heart attack, getting diabetes, getting cancer,
developing a chronic disease, and more. So, how can we kill these two birds with one stone, pardon
the pun? We can change our ways of eating to a heart healthy, animal friendly, environmentally loving,

Creating A Decent Job At Panera Bread Essay
Finding a decent job, especially in the recessionary atmosphere that followed the 2008 financial crisis,
can be a challenge. Companies moving overseas, managers cutting costs, and a shrinking job pool are
all factors that make it difficult for anyone, regardless of education or experience, to find a steady
income. Like many teenagers entering the workforce for the first time, I found my job prospects to be
quite limited. After applying to a number of local businesses, I was overjoyed to have finally gotten a
job at Panera Bread, just a few minutes away from my house. Although I was thankful to be employed
for the first time, as I started working, I began to notice a troubling trend happening at Panera Bread.
According to the company s website, Panera Bread was founded by Louis Kane and Ron Shaich in
1981 as Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. Throughout the 1980 s and 1990 s, the company flourished along the
eastern coast of the United States and internationally, eventually becoming a dominant player in the
bakery café market. In 1993, the company acquired Saint Louis Bread Company, a chain of 20 bakery
cafes located around the St. Louis area. After a comprehensive re staging of Saint Louis Bread Co., the
company managed to increase average unit volumes by 75 percent and changed the concept s name to
Panera Bread. By 1997, it was clear that Panera Bread had the potential to be one of the top brands in
the nation. Since then, Panera Bread s stock has skyrocketed to a current market

When the market demand for shipping capacity was high, owners would keep a vessel in operation as
long as possible. Conversely, when market demand was low, scrapping rose. There had been very few
scrapping in recent years, one reason might be that most of the capacity of the worldwide fleet of
capsizes was fairly young which we can see from Exhibit 5, another reason might be the market
demand is strong recently.
Market demand is affected by trading volumes, world economy and even trading patterns.
For example, in 2003, the Australian and Indian ore exports would begin, the volume would increase,
demand for capsize would likely increase as well with the higher trading volumes.
Exhibit 5 shows the evidence that demands (Iron ore vessel shipments) and supply (Fleet size) drive
the average daily hire rate (Avg. spot rate).
Factor 2: World economy
The average daily hire rate is also determined by the world economy, especially its basic industries.
When the economy is strong, the production and demand for the shipped products increase thus will
result a lower hire rate. Conversely, when the world economy is in a recession, the hire rate will be
lower. Take an example, the average hire rate declined in 1998 and 1999 because of the effect of 1998
financial crisis.
Factor 3: Age of ships
Average hire rate is influenced by the age of the ships. If a company s vessels are relatively new than
the industry average, it earned a premium in daily hire rate

The Relationship Between Transitive Inference And Social...
INTRODUCTION As claims the premise below, the ecological (e.g., temperature, humidity, altitude,
and alimentation) and social (relationships with the environment and other organisms) factors could
mould the perceptual and cognitive characteristic of a given species. It means that among nonhumans
vertebrates they learn differently and have difference intelligence. Some authors, such as Clayton et al.
(1998), supports this point of view. But this is not a universal thought within the scientific world.
Mcphail and Bolhuis (2001), for example, do not see a relation between cognitive abilities and
ecological factors. Moreover, Mcphail (1982, 1885), with his null hypothesis, claims that all
vertebrates non humans are of equal intelligence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can be pointed out as a social factor the complexity of the social group where a given species lives.
Recently, it has been found evidence that supports the link between social complexity and transitive
inference, which indicates that animals that show superior transitive reasoning are those who are
highly social (Brannon et al., 2008). Transitive inference could be defined as a form of deductive
reasoning that allows one to derive a relation between items that have not been explicitly compared
before (Lazareva, 2012). To analyse the relation between transitive inference and social complexity,
Brannon et al. (2008) use two laboratory experiments, which include two species of lemurs: ringtailed
and mongoose lemurs. Ringtailed lemurs are highly social while mongoose lemurs are less social.
Within the two experiments, Brannon et al. (2008) found that both species were capable of transitive
inference, but ringtailed lemurs were more capable to detect the underlying linear order of an ordinal
series. It means that the both species do not differ directly in their ability to make transitive inferences,
but in their ability to detect the underlying linear order. So, according to Brannon et al. (2008), it
suggests that the social complexity is important in order to detect and reason about the rank order of
conspecifics, which are important to survive when animal lives in a complex social group with linear
dominance

Essay about Inherit the Wind
Inherit the Wind is about a 24 year old teacher named Bertram T. Cates, who is arrested for teaching
Darwin s Theory of Evolution to his junior high class. Some high profile Hillsboro town s people
press charges and have Cates arrested for teaching evolutionism in a stringent Christian town. A
famous lawyer named Henry Drummond defends him; while a fundamentalist politician Matthew
Harrison Brady prosecutes. The story takes place in Hillsboro, which is a small town in Tennessee.

Having the label of colonel applied to his name only increases his perceived appearance of power and
knowledge. The locals feel inferior to Brady s intellectual persona radiating from his ego. This is
identical to cults where the members feel inferior as common folk, compared to the omnipresent
director. Like many cultic leaders, Brady eventually falls victim to realism and practicality. Brady is
no expert on the Bible and that is made abundantly clear during the trial. He is wise enough to recall
major key elements, and has also committed many Biblical passages to memory. However, he is naïve
and poorly versed on the literal translation of some controversial facets of the Bible, which in turn
destroy his credibility during cross examination by Drummond when he takes the stand. Bertram
Cates is not a typical criminal. He is quiet and reserved and doesn t to want to cause trouble or
conflict. He is merely standing up for what he believes in and is doing his best to teach his students
that there is more to the world than what the Bible states. He is viewed as unchristian and toxic by the
locals. Both Drummond and Cates experience a struggle against mainstream society. Cates doesn t try
to stand up for himself too much, he actually is quite dependant on Drummond for support and
direction. In the end, Cates is ironically more forgiving than his Christian counterparts. Cates role in
the film is quite small in

Submarine Warfare During The Civil War Essay
Some say that war never changes. That in the end, it is always the same, a time where conflict took the

making the puzzle more complicated every time. With every new era comes new tools. In the
American Civil War, a country divided against itself will see warfare like never before, from repeating
rifles, different type cannons and ammunition, submarines, grenades, and many more. (Weaver)

Submarine warfare has been a military tactic tried again and again since the 1600s. So why have we
not heard of submarine warfare during the civil war? Well, it is because both the Union and the
Confederacy had their share of secret scientific research during this time, making sure that no one
knew of their projects. Both sides would use submarines for different purposes altogether though, the
Union would use them to clear out Confederate harbors that contained hostile ships, while the
Confederacy would use the submarines to go against the naval blockade in the Atlantic Ocean ordered
by the Union. The very first successful submarine attack was by Lieutenant George E. Dixon and his
crew aboard the CSS H. L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine. They spotted a Union ship by the name
of USS Housatonic, and submerged. Once in range they fired a torpedo which rammed itself into the
enemy vessel. Once they hit their mark they retreated to a safe distance and triggered the explosive,
making history as they conducted the first successful submarine attack.

Synaptic plasticity, is the biological process that results in our ability to memorize, reinforce, and

of synaptic development. They are present deep in the development of a young brain and account for
and represent the early processes of the pathway for experience dependent synaptic development.

AMPAR upregulation during long term withdrawal, deduce that homeostatic conversion of AMPARs
is mediated in result of the extended decrease in overall membrane excitability.
Roles of SGS in brain development, addiction, and synaptic plasticity is still widely unknown and in

Cannery Row Essay
In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row, Mack and his ravenous companions depart the inhospitable coastal
fog of Monterey, California, and head east toward Carmel Valley, searching for sun.
Turning down a sinuous two lane road running alongside the Carmel River, they discover an Elysian
plain basking beneath crystalline skies. Wildflowers stippled the orchards and quilted greenery at the
base of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range.
The men scoop up carrots fallen from a flatbed. Their truck runs over a rooster. They snag a bay leaf
from a tree, make a fire, and prepare a feast.
Luck, Steinbeck writes, blossomed from the first.
Steinbeck s Depression era saga was published in 1945. Exactly 20 years later, a 15 year old Monterey
High student named Peter Partch made the same eastbound turn onto Carmel Valley Road. Sitting
quietly alongside his father in the cab of their truck, Partch hoped luck would blossom for him, too.

Essay On Iago s Use Of Irony In Othello
Shakespeare s villain, Iago, in his work Othello is perhaps the smartest of all Shakespeare s
antagonists. Iago manages to unsettle the steadfast, level headed Othello, remove jovial Cassio from
his honored position, and plant incriminating evidence against Desdemona all with in the span of three
days without raising suspicion from his friends or his wife. All of this Iago does to spite Othello for
naming Cassio his lieutenant instead of himself. Othello is abundant with irony. Because Iago is so
double sided, during all of his interactions with his friends, mainly Cassio and Othello, the irony is
obvious. Throughout the play Othello, as well as many other characters, refers to Iago as honest and
just (Othello 5.1.33). In reality, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without, Iago s ironic friendship with Cassio and Othello, Iago would not be such an accomplished
villain. Shakespeare goes beyond the basic villian that plots alone in solitude with Iago. Shakespeare
has Iago scheme, plot, and take his revenge all while having seemingly harmless interactions with a
multitude of characters, none of which know his intention. Because Shakespeare hides Iago s
intentions from the rest of the characters, Iago clearly displays two different personalities. There is the
evil villian out to get his revenge, and the helpful, obedient, and wise friend. Iago is the type of villian
that could be anyone, and his interaction with the other characters makes him endlessly entertaining to
the audience. It must be remembered that while Shakespeare s plays are studied today as classic
literature, Shakespeare wrote them to be performed as entertainment for the general public. It is inroy
that fuels Iago s character and makes the play intriguing to the audience. Because Shakespeare s
character is so duplicitous, the audience can not help but hang on to Iago s every ironic interaction
with the other characters. Without a doubt Shakespeare s mastery of irony is evident in his work
Othello , especially in his villain

That Hideous Strength Analysis
When C.S. Lewis wrote That Hideous Strength , the characters Mark and Jane show their differences
when it came to values and morals. Even though culture can be educational, in today s society it has
effects when it comes to the learned behaviors. I will show comparisons and contrast when it comes to
my culture and the culture that is portrayed in the book. Cultural behaviors shape who we are and
what we stand for. In the text I gathered Jane to be restricted and resentful while Mark on the other
hand has many friends, but always seems to fall short when communicating with other fellows at

They never warned you. No one has ever told you that obedience humility is an erotic necessity. You
are putting equality just where it ought to be (Lewis, pg. ) Humility to me meant a desire to stay
humble. Equality means to be equal when a person wants to increase status, equal right opportunities.
For example, the criminal justice system is truly unfair and unjust, making race the number one
priority in most cases. The values that we portray are learned such as respect. Power and control seem
to rule social positions and how people relate to others. The perspective of education has now been the
American Dream. In today s world you have to work hard to obtain equality among different
diversities and most importantly gender.
These values that I possess are different from the characters in the book. I am honest, trustworthy,
open minded, empathetic and patient when it comes to dealing with other people. In the text the
characters seemed to be fearful, dishonest, judgmental, treating people like a means to an end and bias

Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick s Tendency
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick s Tendencies: Queerness and Oppression
Over the last two decades or so, the idea of queerness is one that has been utilized and considered by
individuals and communities of marginalized sexualities and genders. The concept is one that has
attempted to broaden and deconstruct traditional notions of gender and sexuality in order to include all
of their incarnations as valid experiences and identities. Queerness endeavors to include all of those
who feel they are a part of it yet, seemingly, not everyone can be queer without changing the very
nature of queerness. Or can they? Queerness is a concept which resists borders and structure yet it
seems as though there must be certain commonalities among all queer ... Show more content on

Despite the fact that this is probably not Sedgwick s intention, her construction of queerness highlights
the existence of a sexual and gender norm and simply clumps all abnormal sexualities and genders
together under the category of queerness. The interpretation of queerness as being a catch all category
for sexualities and genders which do not fit into the category of heterosexual, man, and woman,
supports the idea that queer status is a second class status because there is nothing particular about it
other than the fact that it is not normal.
Her attempt to create queerness as a sort of democracy in which each individual determines his/her
status as queer also has counterproductive consequences for queerness. Sedgwick, in an attempt to
shift the power of labeling someone as queer from the straight labeler to the queer labeled, robs
queerness of some of its potency and cohesion. For example, imagine queerness as being the popular
table in a middle school cafeteria. I can decide to label myself as queer and then feel entitled to be able
to sit at this table yet the students at the table can easily choose to reject me. If they do not reject me,
and allow anyone and everyone to sit at this table, then, in

Finding Peace in Death Comes For The Archbishop Essay
Finding Peace in Death Comes For The Archbishop
Willa Cather s Death Comes For The Archbishop is a novel set in the nineteenth century in New

priests on a mission to promote Catholicism in Santa Fe. The story follows each man s experiences in
these unrefined surroundings causing them to go through dramatic changes as they experience the
westward movement of the frontier. Through the struggles and journeys of a host of characters, we

I will now go on to Trinidad, Father Martinez s nephew who also exhibits a divided character, lustful
and gluttonous, as well as having himself crucified and scourged during Passion Week. When he ate
dinner, he ate as if he were afraid of never seeing food again. When his attention left his plate for a
moment, it was fixed in the same greedy way upon the girl who served the table...with careless
contempt (145). Trinidad seems to have such an ugly personality, but at the same time he carries out
his religious duties, to the extreme. It is as if one makes up for the other, contradicting Catholicism.
Padre Martinez, who also tends to acts upon rules of his own, has taught Trinidad literal religion, not
spiritual religion. Trinidad seems to think repeated sins can easily be forgiven, acting more to please
those around him instead of God. Trinidad s character of sin and solitude seems to be allowing him to
get the best of both worlds, when he should just be content with one.
To show the contrast of a single character and a divided character, I would like to discuss Eusabio.

Essay on Analysis of Stille s Ganges Next Life
Bathing in the Ganges is a religious tradition that is an integral part of daily life in India. It represents
a purification of the soul, as Stille states, ...[A] river that, because of its divine origin, is pure and
purifies all those faithful who immerse themselves in her, (598). However, presently, there exists a
dilemma that threatens the survival of this tradition: the poor condition of the river. The river is
polluted with raw sewage, human and industrial waste, the charred remains of bodies, and animal
carcasses (598). In the Ganges Next Life, Alexander Stille contrasts traditional and modern values.
Traditional Hindu values, yet somewhat primitive, reflect thousands of years of experience and

Nevertheless, he recognizes that environmental safety and other modern ideals cannot be avoided.
Demonstrating his acceptance of technology s ubiquity, Mishra says, These things satellite television,
this internet surfing are with us whether we like it or not (610). As technology advances and expands,
the disparity between the two ideals becomes increasingly noticeable and unavoidable. Although
modern and traditional values are very distinct, they have already begun to merge in many aspects of
Indian life. For example, television, a relatively new technology, has been adapted for the traditional
purpose of worshipping. Indian families set up television sets on altars and worship before them when
viewing religious films. At a glance, this practice appears to be sacrilegious and almost sinful.
However, they are not worshipping the technology, but rather utilizing the technology to worship their
gods. Also, when celebrating the wedding anniversary of the gods Shiva and Parvati, Indians decorate
shrines with flashing electric lights pulsing disco music. In the

Factors Influencing California Teacher Credentialing
From the time California was admitted to the Union through today, the requirements for formal
educators have continuously evolved. Multiple factors have influenced these changes. The economy,
changes in immigrant communities, as well as scientific research on social emotional, physical and
cognitive development of students. Changes in teaching style trends have also been influenced by the
same factors. The success of the education system in California continues to be dependent on the
willingness to meet the changing needs of its population. In order for the state government to insure
that educators are up to the challenge, the factors influencing California teacher credentialing must be
known. Due to evolving student needs since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to gaining insight on the evolution of the education system in California, I am looking
forward to learning about today s trends in teaching as well as predictions for the direction we are
headed for the future. With the help of research, I hope to find the specific factors the state use to
determine best practices. Do best practices differ according to the demographics the public school is
serving? How big of a role does each factor play in curriculum and teacher training? I also want to
focus on the current use of Professional Learning Communities and the requirement of Professional
Development. How have these newer practices changed the effectiveness of teaching? In Early
Childhood we have always had to fulfill Professional Development requirements in order to maintain
or upgrade Early Childhood Credential Permits. How new is the requirement for Professional
Development for multi subject teachers in maintaining their credential? Through research for this
paper in addition to tracking the changes in credentialing requirements of educators, I hope to discover
if California has been able to keep up with the ever changing educational needs of our population; or
if the state has had to play catch up at some points in time. Are we alone in the challenges we face due
to the diversity of our population or are there models

At first it seems impossible and that s where the resolution stage comes. Erin Gruwell was given
permission to continue teaching them and the relationship between students, their racial differences
and backgrounds came together and in conclusion we can see how everything progressed and was
resolved. From conclusion we learn that we have to go after what we believe in. Commentary on the
key characters and actors who portrayed them Most of the time movies about school have certain
types of characters such as Master Teacher, Fuddy Duddy, Troopers and students so is this movie. All
of those characters played a significant role in order to portray the story effectively. A lot depended on
the actors as well and their ability to be adapted to the characters they were assigned to play. Hilary
Swank plays Erin Gruwell, the Master teacher who demonstrates excellence and enthusiasm inside
and outside of the classroom and aims for the better in order to educate the students. She tried to make
everyone lives easier, but that is impossible. However, she achieved what she believed in because of
her spirit and technique. She learned that sometime you have to make sacrifices and sometimes people
will get hurt, but it is all for the best. Therefore, she is a round character; we see her transformation
from a shy and unsure of her abilities to woman who fights for what she believes in. Concerning
Hilary Swank as an actor portraying Erin, she adapted very

Essay on Female Chauvinist Pigs
In Female Chauvinist Pigs, Ariel Levy attempts to reconcile her personal views of feminism with its
portrayal in popular culture. In order to challenge what she sees as a co opted version of feminism,
Levy raises the question of authenticity of sex positive feminism (Levy, 63) on two levels: by selling
out in terms of the body and in terms of our patriarchal culture. In order to restore a binary
relationship between feminism and non feminism, Levy recasts this sex positive feminism as a new
form of (fe)male chauvinism. To do so, Levy turns to the experiences of several young women whom
she interviews. From her interpretations of these experiences, Levy reaches the conclusion that these
women s sexual nature revolves around their need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This binary relationship manifests itself in Levy s work in another way, as well. Toward the very end
of the book Levy claims she has no complaint against women who do gain genuine sexual pleasure
from their vaginas waxed, their breasts enlarged (Levy, 198). On one hand, Levy recognizes that
sexuality is personal and that everyone s own experiences and preferences are unique. Yet at the same
time, by drawing the line between authentic and fake , she must impersonally interpret these
experiences in order to classify them as problematic . This desire to judge yet not judge women s
sexual nature represents an underlying tension within the book that threatens to unravel her arguments.
Levy further asserts her binary comparison in a temporal manner by comparing the feminism of the
past with the feminism of the present, as she claims in recent years, the term feminism has fallen
further and further out of favour (Levy, 86). By framing her own views of feminism as those
belonging to an earlier point in the timeline, she privileges these views as original or authentic . Yet
this does not acknowledge that the anti porn wars of the 80 s was a point at which feminism branched
out, rather than transitioned from one set of beliefs to another. As a result, the cultural changes that she
observed occurred in the presence of both stances of feminism, making it difficult to distil the cause.
Levy privileges past over present in her suggestion

I read the fantasy book called The Land Of Stories A Grimm Warning by Chris Colfer. This book has
469 pages in it. According to a review on Amazon by USA TODAY There is more in Colfer s magic

because I think this book might be a little hard for young kids and maybe something that older kids
like high schoolers aren t interested in. The main characters in Land of Stories A Grimm Warning are:

When emotion is processed with new information it is shown to be noticeable when it is process to
WM. The information that was received within the environment is perceived in WM and is related to
the images from long term memory that is similar or already had existing descriptions within WM.
(Levens and Gotlib, P654) But when negative information that is taken to WM can relate with similar
descriptions with other negative images, which gives a stronger connection within the WM. Another
factor that influences negative information would be maladaptive rumination, (P. 654, Levens and
Gotlib, 2010) also known for to lowering the risk elaboration of negative information in WM. But,
emotions can change a negative emotion by thinking positively which then makes the information in
WM change the connection of negative image and replace the new memory (positive) with the current
(negative). The current study is to figure if depressed people and non depressed people are different
when applying updating with WM. In the experiment, the two groups were to perform an emotion
experiment (n back), which were given a series of faces with same or different emotion expressions.
The options were neutral, sad, and happy faces. (P. 659, Levens and Gotlib, 2010) In the first round of
the experiment, the groups must choose the face is same or different. The next 2 trials, the groups
must do the same thing, as the first time but the decision they make will be compared with the

Explain Why Is Connecticut Called The Nutmeg State
Why is Connecticut Called the Constitution State and the Nutmeg State?
Connecticut is called the Constitution State because it had the world s first written constitution.
According to Gelman, Hartford, Windsor, and Wethersfield wanted to join together and become the
colony of Connecticut (20). They wrote their own laws to live by. These laws are called the
Fundamental Orders. Connecticut is also called the Nutmeg State. This is because people moved from
Connecticut to other states because there was not enough land to live on. They moved around like the
yankee peddlers would to sell goods and nutmegs to farmers and settlers (Kent, 45). Many of the
people from Connecticut moved to the midwest.

Fall 2016
Introduction
My field placement will be at Child protective services in El Paso TX. My Target population for my
field placement will be Children who have been maltreated, neglected and abused. Child abuse
prevention has grown exponentially in El Paso over the past 31 years. In El Paso alone the Texas
Department of Family and Protective Services investigated 4,979 reports of alleged child abuse in
2014 in El Paso County. They confirmed that 1,339 children were indeed victims of abuse; 379
confirmed cases of Physical abuse, 166 confirmed cases of sexual abuse, 56 cases of emotional abuse
and 70 cases of medical neglect (Lee Beulah Moor,2016) A troubling trend has emerged regarding the
prevention of child maltreatment in the state of Texas. A tragic loophole contributing to continued
abuse and in many cases child fatalities, continues to be exploited to the detriment of one of our most
vulnerable populations. From 2009 to 2014, there were 800 child fatalities reported as abuse and
neglect deaths by Child Protective Services in all of Texas (Ball, 2015). An analysis of these cases by
an independent research group found gross errors by CPS and other agencies during ongoing abuse
cases enabled the abuse or neglect to continue, inevitably leading to death. Although the percentage of
child fatalities is just a tiny fraction of the exorbitant

meant to modernize the FBI s antiquated computer system and included a case management system,
an evidence management system, and a records management system (Marchewka 2010). As we will
discuss in the course of our case study, the Trilogy Project would fail for a number of reasons. Despite

Without centralized IT leadership defining program goals, alignment within the agency s IT programs
was not possible. Culturally, existing tools, such as the Automated Case Support (ACS) system, were
under utilized, and agents did not trust them to protect evidence and confidential sources (OIG Audit
Report 05 07, 2005). Numerous techniques exist that would have allowed Trilogy leadership to gain
key input from system users, which would have had the dual benefit of creating understanding of the
ground level needs of users and fostering user buy in at the project s outset.
Formal Project Definition
Trilogy management attempted to provide a formal project definition that explained the mission of the
project, focused the project planning efforts and outlined the project deliverables. Trilogy was so
named due to its three components: the Information Presentation Component (IPC), the Transportation
Network Component (TNC) and User Application Component (UAC). The IPC and TNC components
were adequately defined, but the UAC was poorly defined, with catastrophic results. Trilogy
management recognized that the size and complexity of the project required the use of external
resources with proper IT project experience and technical expertise. Two contractors were used, one
for the IPC and TNC, and a second for UAC. The IPC/TNC contract included three major milestones
as part of a phased rollout: Fast Track, Extended Fast Track and Full Site Capability.

  • 2. Washington Irving Essay Washington Irving Diedrich Knickerbocker; Geoffrey Crayon; Henry A. Buchanan; Jonathan Oldstyle. All were famous writers of the nineteenth century. All had one important thing in common they are all one man Washington Irving. Using these pen names, among many, Irving developed a legacy of utilizing European culture to cultivate American aspects of literature. Fred Lewis Pattee asserted, American short story began in 1819 wit Washington Irving. (Gale Group 4) Irving is best known for his fictional works. These pieces include the popular The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , Rip Van Winkle , and The Devil and Tom Walker . Each of these works left a mark on American fictional literature. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , from The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A comment made by Irving himself expressed his feelings towards his characters: I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories. (From Tales of a Traveler, 1824) (Oldstyle 1) This comment is used to show the significance of Irving s fictional works to American literature. He used styles such as manipulation and imagery to captivate the reader. Imagery such as in Chapter 1 of Rip Van Winkle is enchanting and grabs the reader: When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory. (Knickerbocker 2) This sentence, alone, shows his technique in which gives to reader a picture of what is taking place in the piece. This style is typical now and is among many that has been brought or shared through Washington Irving s fictional works, as well as his European experiences have brought life to his non fictional pieces. During the seventeen years he spent in Europe (following his mother s death Sarah Sanders Irving) from 1815 to 1832, Irving not only served many diplomatic purposes, but many (of course) literal as well. Irving was fascinated by Spain. During his stay there, he wrote Columbus (1828), Conquest of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Is Third Worlld Immigration a Threat to Americas Way of Life Is Third Worlld Immigration a Threat to Americas Way of Life Is Third world immigration a threat to America s way of life? I do not believe it is. I agree with Isbister. He argues that cultural impacts of immigration are positive, constructive changes, that most Americans will benefit from living in a more multicultural society, and that tension between the different ethnic groups can be alleviated. I for one am a Filipino American and proud of it. My parents came to America from the Philippines to make a better life for themselves. They came here for the so called American Dream. My parents believed in all the sayings about The Land of Opportunity and The Land of Milk and Honey. I honestly believe that they have made their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One reason why people oppose it is because they believe that immigrants may take away jobs from American workers. Another issue is that they believe immigrants may cause the country to break up into separate cultural units, thus destroying America s unity. Lastly, people say that immigrants are a fiscal burden. Isbister tells us that cross sectional studies show that immigration has little if any impact on the wages and employment opportunities of residents, even residents who are unskilled, low paid, or racial minorities. This and other cross sectional empirical studies show that immigration quite possibly may have little or no effect at all on employment and wages of current residents. In regards to the issue that immigrants may try to break the country up into separate units. I believe this is preposterous. I think that the only reason why people believe in this is because they are ignorant to other cultures and feel threatened because of their differences. I think that Isbister said it best with the this statement, The essence of American life is that it is composed of different groups, different cultures, races, religions, attitudes, folkways and ideologies, differences that give the country its distinctiveness. In concern with the issue that immigrants are a fiscal burden there is no proof that this is true. There have been studies made that claim ...immigrants have not been a burden to U.S. governments that government expenditures on the immigrants ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Government Policies Set Up By The Ussr Government policies set up by the USSR, especially the New Economic Policy and Five Year Plans had a major effect on the industrial growth and development in the USSR both due to their focused end goal and the unification of the party being able to enforce these policies. However, the Five year plans can be seen as a more successful policy in promoting industrial development, as statistics show a that it resulted in a greater growth of development and industrial development of the USSR than any other government policy. The Five Year Plan can be seen as the leading government policy in promoting industrial development. To achieve this, targets were set for every industry, each region, each mine and factor and every worker fined if targets were not met. With a clear goal and targets to reach the FYP meant many poor peasants in rural areas of the USSR began to migrate to urban areas. Cities sprung up from nothing, allowing more workers to move to these developing areas in search for money a success in promoting industrial development, as without workers willing to relocate and work, industrial development would not have been possible. The Five year plan was a huge success in promoting industrial development, coal production quadrupled from 1927 (35 million tons) to 150 million by 1940, followed by steel increasing six times and then followed by electricity. These key aspects provided the basis for the USSR military economy, allowing the Soviets to turn the tables and drive out the Germans by being able to supply the factories with an every growing demand of electricity, parts for tanks, weapons, goods and machinery could all be manufactured to succeed in industrial development of the USSR, the USSR was turned into a modern state, which resultantly could resist Hitler s invasion. The over ambitious targets set out by the FYP, in terms of producing goods over the USSR production possibility meant many targets were over exaggerated and false to avoid penalty. • 6. Ignorance In Flowers For Algernon The novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is an excellent written novel that has deep meaning to it. The novel is about a 32 year old man named Charlie Gordon who is mentally disabled, and he goes through a medical procedure which enhances his knowledge. Throughout the novel, all Charlie wants to be is normal. Charlie just wants to fit in, have friends, and make his parents proud. Charlie is the first person ever to go through this surgery so he is going through a journey that only he has experienced. In the novel, Charlie s operation is based off of a similar operation that was performed on a mouse called Algernon and the things that happen to Algernon usually end up happening to Charlie. As Charlie s intelligence increases he goes through struggles that affect his relationships and his views on life. Charlie experiences and remembers things that have happened previously in his life and his ultimate goal is to learn his past. At the end of the novel Charlie starts to lose his intelligence which results in his ultimate demise. Depending on the situation, ignorance is bliss, however, there are other scenarios where knowing the whole truth regardless of the consequences is also beneficial. To begin with, ignorance in certain situations is bliss and sometimes not knowing the whole truth is better than knowing all of it. This is certainly the case for Charlie because in the beginning of the novel Charlie s intelligence is very low and he doesn t understand what is going ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Differences in Crime Statistics in the Uniform Crime... Arguments over crime statistics have been raging ever since governments began counting criminal activity. In 1930 the United States congress authorized the attorney general of the United States to survey crime in America. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was chosen to implement the program. (Schmalleger p.38) The Uniform Crime Reports is the survey taken by the FBI. This measure of crime in America depends on reports to the police by victims of crimes. The UCR Program was developed by the FBI for the purpose of serving law enforcement as a tool for operational and administrative purposes. Arson is an exception to the Hierarchy Rule . One of the problems with the Uniform Crime Reports is that many citizens do not always make official reports. For example, many women refuse to report rapes because they do not want to relive the ordeal. Some citizen s feel that the police will not be able to do anything about a crime committed against them therefore they do not report it. Another problem with the Uniform Crime Reports is that Victimless crimes are rarely reported. These are crimes like prostitution, gambling, and drug use. Since many of these crimes are not reported, then the UCR becomes somewhat vague and incomplete. When reviewing crime data, it is important for the reader to note the difference between offenses and arrests. Offenses relate to events and arrests relate to persons. A single offense may involve no arrestees; may involve one arrestee; or may involve many arrestees. National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is the Nation s primary source of information on criminal victimization. Twice each year, data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of roughly 49,000 households comprising about 100,000 persons on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal victimization in the United States. In answering this question it is necessary to define the terms deserve and great . For these purposes, to deserve will mean to be worthy of. Great has many meanings, and will be defined as: important; grand; distinguished; remarkable in ability or character; competent; or above what is normal, with implied admiration. Alexander, son of Philip, the king of the Macedonians, was more than most men. His achievements were admirable, and his success brilliant. Alexander had remarkable ability, and so was great in many different ways. On top of doing great things, Alexander was a great leader, and a political and military genius. His goal to conquer Persia was one that he would let nothing stand in the way of. As leader of his troops, he suffered their same wounds, being one of the last great leaders to personally take the risk of death in battle. Alexander listened to every man he had, and so became very close to his men. Some argue his ability in motivating and inspiring his men was in fact the greatest ever seen, half defeating the opposition in nerves before a battle began. He was also remarkable with military tactics, employing strategies still used today. As the Encarta Encyclopedia put it: Alexander was one of the greatest generals of all time, noted for his brilliance as a tactician and troop leader and for the rapidity with which he could traverse great expanses... He succeeded politically as well, earning respect from many people. Alexander s charisma and adoption of Persian customs gave him strong loyalty needed in order to control his massive empire. However, the greatness in his work here is questionable: often he used brutal force, sometimes killing thousands of civilians, or selling them into slavery. But overall, Alexander must be seen as great man in terms of a leader and a military commander. There is one major area of Alexander where heated debates often occur: his character and ... George began his professional career in quot;Tin Pan Alley, quot; a location in New York City where aspiring composers and songwriters would bring their scores to a publisher trying to sell the tunes for cash. Two years after he started work for Jerome Remick, George had his first song published. quot; When You Want Em You Can t Get Em quot; was not an instantly famous, but it did begin to attract the attention of some of the Broadway composers of the day. • 10. Virginia V. Texas, The Supreme Court Upheld The... In Fisher v Texas, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of special admissions programs; but this could only be done under strict judicial scrutiny, and with narrowly tailored provisions. Two separate questions stem from this: What does narrowly tailoring mean in light of the 14th Amendment? And how can other universities implement admission standards that are constitutionally permissible? Short Answer Grutter and Gratz established that race could be a factor in the admissions process. But it must pass strict scrutiny. At first blush, this might appear discriminatory. But if there is a compelling government interest, then it is not covered by the Equal Protection Clause, in the Fourteenth Amendment. So to pass strict scrutiny ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because schools have a rational reason for excluding certain individuals. It cannot accept every student, so schools must have the ability to sift through applicants. For example, test scores, GPA, extracurricular activities, and the like, can be used when considering an applicants file. In short, this in no way perverts or violates the Equal Protection Clause; schools have a reasonable interest in denying certain applicants because they cannot admit every student that applies. Discussion of Cases: How the Court Applied Strict Scrutiny When a University implements special admissions requirements, like race and ethnicity, the Court called for the most exacting judicial scrutiny when reviewing cases of this nature (Bakke v U.S.). For this, the rational basis test is faulty. Strict scrutiny is prescribed to examine race cases. The Court visited this topic in two separate cases: Grutter v Bollinger and Gratz v Bollinger. Grutter examined admissions requirements for Michigan Law School, and Gratz examined Michigan undergraduate requirements. Once again, emphasis was placed on applying strict scrutiny when race plays a factor in admissions. The court also established the need for narrowly tailored provisions when implementing such programs. In Grutter, the court re emphasized the fact that cultivating a diverse student body was a compelling state interest. To a certain degree the characteristics of his youth, despite his own affirmation of breaking and training , beneficially prevail to adulthood. The roman biographer Cornelius Nepos ascertains that The vices of his early youth were compensated by great virtues . These same vices, his impulsive attitude in the public life, were responsible for the very virtuous achievements he is referring to. In fact these character traits foreshadow the decisions he would make years later in the Persian Wars. Comparatively, his impulsiveness matured into a cunning and uncontrollable determination in the face of authority. He was cleverly deceitful in the construction of a fleet of triremes, he was uncompromising against the Spartan commander Eurybiades at the first gathering at Corinth in 480 BC, and he was determined to get his own way in vital battles such as Salamis and Artemisium whether that required deceiving those authorities above him or not. Plutarch, Nepos, and Themistocles himself all refer to a degree of uncontrollable yet cunning determination that serves a great purpose in Greece s victory over Persia. Above all this, while he was still a youth public affairs laid their grasp upon Themistocles. The particulates can be emitted by the process of knocking down or disturbing the building letting the particulate free and get into the air reducing the quality. If the workers do not manage what they are doing correctly, it can have harmful impacts on not only their health but the communities and the environment. At times enforcing the laws and good practice can be expensive and very disruptive. The legislation includes things like Identifying activities that create pollution, Environmental risk assessment, selecting low emission materials and getting the right training and using the proper methods. But what is classified as particulates and what are they? They can be very broad but things such as Dust and asbestos from knocking buildings down that can float away causing harm to the environment, and people s health, motor vehicle emissions and smoke from power tools also can have a significant impact. There are many ways in which emissions can be controlled including things such as Demolition workers can Water down the building as they are knocking it down to weigh down the particulates. Using the water to weigh down particualtes can be harmfull, as if the workers use to much water to weigh down this particualtes it can cause run off. This run off can end up in the river sytems and throw this way the particualtes can polute and cause harm to the enviroment and the animals in th eater. Workers can also time it to the wind, i.e. on windy days don t do work that will cause a lot of particulates to float around. They can even be aware of the environment in which they are working in and know the restrictions and the history s (mainly for older homes) of other houses to get a broader idea if the particulates cause more harm than a newer house might. For things such as Sanding, grinding and welding the workers can also use water to weigh down the particulates or use a type of grad method to trap the particulates. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the market demand for shipping capacity was high, owners would keep a vessel in operation as long as possible. Conversely, when market demand was low, scrapping rose. There had been very few scrapping in recent years, one reason might be that most of the capacity of the worldwide fleet of capsizes was fairly young which we can see from Exhibit 5, another reason might be the market demand is strong recently. Market demand is affected by trading volumes, world economy and even trading patterns. For example, in 2003, the Australian and Indian ore exports would begin, the volume would increase, demand for capsize would likely increase as well with the higher trading volumes. Exhibit 5 shows the evidence that demands (Iron ore vessel shipments) and supply (Fleet size) drive the average daily hire rate (Avg. spot rate). Factor 2: World economy The average daily hire rate is also determined by the world economy, especially its basic industries. When the economy is strong, the production and demand for the shipped products increase thus will result a lower hire rate. Conversely, when the world economy is in a recession, the hire rate will be lower. Take an example, the average hire rate declined in 1998 and 1999 because of the effect of 1998 financial crisis. Factor 3: Age of ships Average hire rate is influenced by the age of the ships. If a company s vessels are relatively new than the industry average, it earned a premium in daily hire rate

INTRODUCTION As claims the premise below, the ecological (e.g., temperature, humidity, altitude, and alimentation) and social (relationships with the environment and other organisms) factors could mould the perceptual and cognitive characteristic of a given species. It means that among nonhumans vertebrates they learn differently and have difference intelligence. Some authors, such as Clayton et al. (1998), supports this point of view. But this is not a universal thought within the scientific world. Mcphail and Bolhuis (2001), for example, do not see a relation between cognitive abilities and ecological factors. Moreover, Mcphail (1982, 1885), with his null hypothesis, claims that all vertebrates non humans are of equal intelligence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can be pointed out as a social factor the complexity of the social group where a given species lives. Recently, it has been found evidence that supports the link between social complexity and transitive inference, which indicates that animals that show superior transitive reasoning are those who are highly social (Brannon et al., 2008). Transitive inference could be defined as a form of deductive reasoning that allows one to derive a relation between items that have not been explicitly compared before (Lazareva, 2012). To analyse the relation between transitive inference and social complexity, Brannon et al. (2008) use two laboratory experiments, which include two species of lemurs: ringtailed and mongoose lemurs. Ringtailed lemurs are highly social while mongoose lemurs are less social. Within the two experiments, Brannon et al. (2008) found that both species were capable of transitive inference, but ringtailed lemurs were more capable to detect the underlying linear order of an ordinal series. It means that the both species do not differ directly in their ability to make transitive inferences, but in their ability to detect the underlying linear order. So, according to Brannon et al. (2008), it suggests that the social complexity is important in order to detect and reason about the rank order of conspecifics, which are important to survive when animal lives in a complex social group with linear dominance ... Both sides would use submarines for different purposes altogether though, the Union would use them to clear out Confederate harbors that contained hostile ships, while the Confederacy would use the submarines to go against the naval blockade in the Atlantic Ocean ordered by the Union. The very first successful submarine attack was by Lieutenant George E. Dixon and his crew aboard the CSS H. L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine. • 32. Adaptation Theory Of Addiction Essay As early as fetus development, our brain neuronal circuits begin to wire themselves. Synaptic plasticity is gained in result of developing neural networks. Synaptic plasticity, is the biological process that results in our ability to memorize, reinforce, and reintroduce information. Silent glutamatergic synapses are a type of synapse that is a vital component of synaptic development. They are present deep in the development of a young brain and account for and represent the early processes of the pathway for experience dependent synaptic development. Roles of SGS in brain development, addiction, and synaptic plasticity is still widely unknown and in early discovery. To date, researchers have uncovered the highly sensitive or plastic properties of SGS. This has opened new theories and potential for research and development in metaplasticity and the understanding of further chemical and developmental processes. Research done by Dong Y. and Lee Br. • 34. Cannery Row Essay In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row, Mack and his ravenous companions depart the inhospitable coastal fog of Monterey, California, and head east toward Carmel Valley, searching for sun. Turning down a sinuous two lane road running alongside the Carmel River, they discover an Elysian plain basking beneath crystalline skies. Wildflowers stippled the orchards and quilted greenery at the base of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. The men scoop up carrots fallen from a flatbed. Their truck runs over a rooster. They snag a bay leaf from a tree, make a fire, and prepare a feast. Luck, Steinbeck writes, blossomed from the first. Steinbeck s Depression era saga was published in 1945. Exactly 20 years later, a 15 year old Monterey High student named Peter Partch made the same eastbound turn onto Carmel Valley Road. Sitting quietly alongside his father in the cab of their truck, Partch hoped luck would blossom for him, too. My big brother was an athlete a great baseball player, Partch said. He d hit the ball and it would take off like a rocket. He was kind of majestic, but I was an abysmal failure. I wasn t sure of myself or my abilities, or my place in the world, for that matter. Reserved and without the hard shell needed to succeed in sports, Partch found salvation in art. I had an instinct that I d have a place in the art world, he said. • 35. Essay On Iago s Use Of Irony In Othello Shakespeare s villain, Iago, in his work Othello is perhaps the smartest of all Shakespeare s antagonists. Iago manages to unsettle the steadfast, level headed Othello, remove jovial Cassio from his honored position, and plant incriminating evidence against Desdemona all with in the span of three days without raising suspicion from his friends or his wife. All of this Iago does to spite Othello for naming Cassio his lieutenant instead of himself. Othello is abundant with irony. Because Iago is so double sided, during all of his interactions with his friends, mainly Cassio and Othello, the irony is obvious. Throughout the play Othello, as well as many other characters, refers to Iago as honest and just (Othello 5.1.33). In reality, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without, Iago s ironic friendship with Cassio and Othello, Iago would not be such an accomplished villain. Shakespeare goes beyond the basic villian that plots alone in solitude with Iago. Shakespeare has Iago scheme, plot, and take his revenge all while having seemingly harmless interactions with a multitude of characters, none of which know his intention. Because Shakespeare hides Iago s intentions from the rest of the characters, Iago clearly displays two different personalities. There is the evil villian out to get his revenge, and the helpful, obedient, and wise friend. Iago is the type of villian that could be anyone, and his interaction with the other characters makes him endlessly entertaining to the audience. It must be remembered that while Shakespeare s plays are studied today as classic literature, Shakespeare wrote them to be performed as entertainment for the general public. It is inroy that fuels Iago s character and makes the play intriguing to the audience. Because Shakespeare s character is so duplicitous, the audience can not help but hang on to Iago s every ironic interaction with the other characters. Even though culture can be educational, in today s society it has effects when it comes to the learned behaviors. I will show comparisons and contrast when it comes to my culture and the culture that is portrayed in the book. Cultural behaviors shape who we are and what we stand for. • 38. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick s Tendency Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick s Tendencies: Queerness and Oppression Over the last two decades or so, the idea of queerness is one that has been utilized and considered by individuals and communities of marginalized sexualities and genders. The concept is one that has attempted to broaden and deconstruct traditional notions of gender and sexuality in order to include all of their incarnations as valid experiences and identities. Queerness endeavors to include all of those who feel they are a part of it yet, seemingly, not everyone can be queer without changing the very nature of queerness. Or can they? Queerness is a concept which resists borders and structure yet it seems as though there must be certain commonalities among all queer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the fact that this is probably not Sedgwick s intention, her construction of queerness highlights the existence of a sexual and gender norm and simply clumps all abnormal sexualities and genders together under the category of queerness. The interpretation of queerness as being a catch all category for sexualities and genders which do not fit into the category of heterosexual, man, and woman, supports the idea that queer status is a second class status because there is nothing particular about it other than the fact that it is not normal. Her attempt to create queerness as a sort of democracy in which each individual determines his/her status as queer also has counterproductive consequences for queerness. Sedgwick, in an attempt to shift the power of labeling someone as queer from the straight labeler to the queer labeled, robs queerness of some of its potency and cohesion. For example, imagine queerness as being the popular table in a middle school cafeteria. I can decide to label myself as queer and then feel entitled to be able to sit at this table yet the students at the table can easily choose to reject me. The story follows each man s experiences in these unrefined surroundings causing them to go through dramatic changes as they experience the westward movement of the frontier. When his attention left his plate for a moment, it was fixed in the same greedy way upon the girl who served the table...with careless contempt (145). Trinidad seems to have such an ugly personality, but at the same time he carries out his religious duties, to the extreme. It is as if one makes up for the other, contradicting Catholicism. Padre Martinez, who also tends to acts upon rules of his own, has taught Trinidad literal religion, not spiritual religion. Trinidad seems to think repeated sins can easily be forgiven, acting more to please those around him instead of God. Trinidad s character of sin and solitude seems to be allowing him to get the best of both worlds, when he should just be content with one. In order to challenge what she sees as a co opted version of feminism, Levy raises the question of authenticity of sex positive feminism (Levy, 63) on two levels: by selling out in terms of the body and in terms of our patriarchal culture. In order to restore a binary relationship between feminism and non feminism, Levy recasts this sex positive feminism as a new form of (fe)male chauvinism. This binary relationship manifests itself in Levy s work in another way, as well. Toward the very end of the book Levy claims she has no complaint against women who do gain genuine sexual pleasure from their vaginas waxed, their breasts enlarged (Levy, 198). On one hand, Levy recognizes that sexuality is personal and that everyone s own experiences and preferences are unique. Yet at the same time, by drawing the line between authentic and fake , she must impersonally interpret these experiences in order to classify them as problematic . This desire to judge yet not judge women s sexual nature represents an underlying tension within the book that threatens to unravel her arguments. Levy further asserts her binary comparison in a temporal manner by comparing the feminism of the past with the feminism of the present, as she claims in recent years, the term feminism has fallen further and further out of favour (Levy, 86). By framing her own views of feminism as those belonging to an earlier point in the timeline, she privileges these views as original or authentic . Yet this does not acknowledge that the anti porn wars of the 80 s was a point at which feminism branched out, rather than transitioned from one set of beliefs to another. As a result, the cultural changes that she observed occurred in the presence of both stances of feminism, making it difficult to distil the cause. Virtual Case Files -- Project Triology | 2013 | | | [Trilogy Case] | Virtual Case File | Executive Summary The FBI Information Technology Upgrade Project (FITUP) was initiated in 2000, and, after five years of cascading problems, was abandoned for the Sentinel project in 2005. Estimated to cost $170M, VCF went over budget by approximately $330M (Nelson 2007). The project was meant to modernize the FBI s antiquated computer system and included a case management system, an evidence management system, and a records management system (Marchewka 2010). As we will discuss in the course of our case study, the Trilogy Project would fail for a number of reasons. Despite failing, Project Trilogy is not alone when it comes to project management blunders. Culturally, existing tools, such as the Automated Case Support (ACS) system, were under utilized, and agents did not trust them to protect evidence and confidential sources (OIG Audit Report 05 07, 2005). Numerous techniques exist that would have allowed Trilogy leadership to gain key input from system users, which would have had the dual benefit of creating understanding of the ground level needs of users and fostering user buy in at the project s outset. Formal Project Definition Trilogy management attempted to provide a formal project definition that explained the mission of the project, focused the project planning efforts and outlined the project deliverables. Trilogy was so named due to its three components: the Information Presentation Component (IPC), the Transportation Network Component (TNC) and User Application Component (UAC). The IPC and TNC components were adequately defined, but the UAC was poorly defined, with catastrophic results. Trilogy management recognized that the size and complexity of the project required the use of external resources with proper IT project experience and technical expertise. Two contractors were used, one for the IPC and TNC, and a second for UAC. The IPC/TNC contract included three major milestones as part of a phased rollout: Fast Track, Extended Fast Track and Full Site Capability. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
