Essay on 19th-Century Medicine in the United Kingdom
19th Century Medicine in the United Kingdom
Professor comments: In this paper, the student synthesizes several sources about nineteenth century
medicine and medical education into a focused and coherent essay that provides information about
aspects of this topic especially relevant to understanding Lydgate s position in Middlemarch: the
differences among physicians, apothecaries, and surgeons, both in terms of training and duties on the
one hand, social status on the other; the processes by which someone obtained a medical education
and became a licensed practitioner; and the differences in English, Scottish, and French training. In
doing so, the student displays an awareness of the importance of the contextual material for more than

Part of the problem with educating and licensing doctors was in the conflicting struggle for rights and
power between licensing bodies; there were nineteen of them in the United Kingdom alone. There was
also no representation of any reputable doctors within the medical universities and corporations that
voted in Parliamentary elections. By the end of the century, medical training facilities were forced to
upgrade their standards due to pressure within some parts of the medical community and because
discoveries in fields like chemistry and physics ultimately led to advances in medicine.
Early nineteenth century medical training was extremely diverse. While some practitioners held
university degrees from the most respected medical colleges of the world, some were apprenticed to
apothecaries where they spent most of their time capping bottles and rolling pills (Youngson 12). Still
others were quacks and drug peddlers who practiced freely with no legal sanctions against them.
There was, in the United Kingdom, a defined social structure of medical men which was divided into
three orders. There were three divisions of legitimate medical groups. They were the Royal College of
Physician, the Royal College of Surgeons, and the Society of Apothecaries. These

Mathematical Theory Of Mathematics And Mathematics
In Mathematics, it is rare that a new branch of mathematics is introduced. That means that even
branches of math that have been around for hundreds of years are still technically new, or at least
relatively new. One such branch of mathematics is probability. Probability is only three hundred to
four hundred years old, so it easily falls into this category when compared to branches of mathematics
such as Geometry which dates back all the way to ancient Egypt in around 2900 BC, when it first
became important when an Egyptian pharaoh wanted to tax farmers who raised crops along the Nile
River. To compute the correct amount of tax, the pharaoh s agents had to be able to measure the
amount of land being cultivated. Later it was used to build the pyramids.
Probability s beginning happened because of recreational circumstances. A gambler s dispute in 1654
led to the creation of the mathematical theory of probability by two famous French mathematicians,
Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat. Antoine Gombaud, Chevalier de Méré, a French nobleman with an
interest in gaming and gambling questions, called Pascal s attention to an apparent contradiction
concerning a popular dice game. The game consisted in throwing a pair of dice 24 times; the problem
was to decide whether or not to bet even money on the occurrence of at least one double six during the
24 throws. A seemingly well established gambling rule led de Méré to believe that betting on a double
six in 24 throws would

Advertisement Of A Mcdonald s Advertisement
We see advertisements and commercials all the time in our daily lives. Sometimes, though, more often
than not, we over look things that might be presented to us, without even realizing it. A McDonald s
advertisement is something everyone is familiar with. Whether we are ignoring the subtleties that are
hidden in the advertisements message, or we are paying attention to the tricks that are being used to
draw us in, McDonalds knows how to make an effective ad.
At the beginning of the McDonald s ad we see the front yard of a little girl s house as her mother does
yard work in the background. As the little girl sits on the sidewalk steps, we find that she has a grey
cloud hovering over her head. We hear a piano jingle from the beginning of the commercial as it
zooms in to show the glum look on her face when she looks up at the cloud. Trying to scoot out from
underneath the cloud she realizes it doesn t work because the cloud follows her. Even blowing at it
doesn t work. Instantly Ronald McDonald walks up and says, hi there (McDonalds). Her face lights up
just long enough to say hi back. He looks at the cloud and kneels down to her level. He mentions her
day is going bad and with a sad look she replies, I ll say (McDonalds). After he tells her it could be
worse, the cloud begins to rain on her. With sarcasm she then says, Awesome (McDonalds). This is
when the piano jingle changes from instrumental to spoken words. Ronald then reaches up and grabs
the cloud as the words in

David Mayhew s Analysis
David Mayhew suggests member of Congress are single minded seekers of reelection. Mayhew
outlines several institutional factors that allow members of Congress to actively and more importantly
for Mayhew s argument, effectively, seek reelection. The effectiveness of the system to allow its
members to seek reelection is notable. Mayhew comments on the systems of Congress [meeting] the
electoral needs of its members [remarkably well]. The institutions of Congress provide its members
with several beneficial services and opportunities that ease the process of being reelected. First,
members of Congress are granted opportunities to provide both their staff and their constituents with
casework which increase loyalty to a member of congress.

‘’Where Are You Going Where Have You Been”
INTRODUCTION:
Where Are You Going Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol, showcases the inevitable effects of
youthful exuberance in a teenage girl. The story is a compelling tale which unveils the vulnerability of
Connie, a young teenage girl who could barely substantiate fantasy from reality. She prides herself as
a pretty girl who understands the basic principles of life. Her encounter with Arnold Friend reveals her
as someone who lacks the mental ability to make meaningful decisions and accurate when necessary.
Her desire for attention and frivolities facilitates in subjecting her as a victim of a wicked and complex
world. She is obsessed with her beauty; her desire for boys and attention makes her pride herself as a
paragon of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The young man smiles and says to her, I ain t late, am I , Connie responds telling him that she does not
know him. She likes his dress sense, but she plays down notions of being interested in him. She is
careful to shows no pleasure and tells him continuously that she doesn t know him. He gets off his car
and points to the word painted on the door of his gold convertible car. The word reads; ARNOLD
FRIEND, which was written nest to a grinning face that reminded Connie of a pumpkin, except it
wore sunglasses. With Arnold Friend is another weird looking fellow who hangs up his radio up his
shoulder and stares at the unknown. He introduces him as Ellie Oscar. He also points to a secret code
to her; but she makes nothing out of it. She laughs at the word written at the left rear fender which has
been smashed; which reads DONE BY CRAZY WOMAN DRIVER. He is delighted to make her
laugh. He startles her when he calls her by name and demands that she hops into the car for a trilling
ride with him. Connie tells him she is busy with domestic activity. He draws an X sign in the air asks
her if she knows what the sign entails. Connie thinks she recognizes the sign but does not recall how
or from were. When Arnold took off his glasses, she notices he is advance in age; and demands to
know how old he is; he stops grinning and says he is the same age as her or a little older than her. She
immediately knows he is not saying the truth.

Afghanistan
Current Problem:
The current problem that is occurring in Afghanistan is the fact that American soldiers are over at
Afghanistan right now. After the 9/11 attack, President George W. Bush puts together a plan to attack
Afghanistan. America sends over a warning, to either turn over Osama bin Laden, the man in charge
of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, or we ll bomb you. After Afghanistan refused to turn him over, due to lack
of evidence that he was in charge of the 9/11 attacks, America, with the help of it s allies, countries
like the United Kingdom and the Northern Alliance, bombed Afghanistan. Through all of this
madness, Osama bin Laden escaped. After all the stuff that just happened in Afghanistan, President
George W. Bush called for America to reconstruct Afghanistan . This would include going over there,
building a new government, and helping the people of Afghanistan to live a nonviolent life. After a
decade of America being in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden being killed, and two new presidents in
Afghanistan, we are left with a big problem, American soldiers are still in Afghanistan, and we have
no idea when they will be able to come back. We can not just take some helicopters, fly over to
Afghanistan, pick up our troops, and fly back to America. The reason why we can t is because
Afghanistan s government is too unstable. Another problem with American troops being stuck in
Afghanistan are that the Taliban

Thoth Research Paper
The gods and goddesses of Greek culture correlate with those of other ancient polytheistic cultures.
Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, war and weaving, and one of the few female wisdom gods
in ancient cultures (Cartwright 1). In Mesopotamian culture, the goddess of wisdom, arts, crafts and
magic was known as Ea or Enki (Mark, Enki 1). Thoth was the Egyptian god of wisdom, magic, and
writing. Egyptians considered him one of the most important gods of their culture (Mark, Thoth 1).
They are all the centers of knowledge in their respective spiritual worlds, but Athena also uses her
wisdom to assist the people in battle and to help them fight strategically. The gods and goddesses of
wisdom had individual characteristics that distinguished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, Thoth, the Egyptian God, was born from the forehead of Set, a leader among the Egyptian
gods. Unlike Athena, Thoth created himself through the Seed of Horus before erupting from Set
(Mark, Thoth 1). Enki was born, unlike the others, in the usual manner. His parents were the Sun God,
Anu and Namunu, the mother goddess (Mark, Enki 3). Athena and Thoth s birth from the head
symbolize their wisdom and focus on knowledge. Athena s physical appearance contradicts that of
Thoth, but is comparable to that of Enki. Athena s femininity distinguish her from the other gods of
wisdom. She, like the other Greek gods, has the body and appearance of a human being, but her
beauty outshadowed those of the humans. Enki had wings and a long beard, but otherwise has a
human figure. He looked as though he was an elderly philosopher, which was fitting because he was
the holder of all knowledge in the Mesopotamian culture. Thoth s head was that of a blue bird, and his
body was muscular. He did not have human beauty and was known for being inhumanly strong. The
masters of wisdom s beauty and grace reveal that they are more than human, even if they appear as
though they are merely mortal

Essay on Critical Commentary on Urban Sustainability
Introduction
Since the late 1980s, the notion of sustainable development has transcended beyond the eminent
United Nations report titled Our Common Future, to mainstream dialogue throughout the globe at all
scales within government and public spheres. This form of development seeks to balance current
environmental, social and economic needs of the population, without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs (World Commission on Environment and Development,
1987, 43). Used interchangeably with sustainability (Seghezzo, 2009), the concept has been fastened
to a plethora of themes, including that of cities where urban sustainability speaks to negligent urban
expansion and resource depletion. However, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the wordplay in Satterthwaite s title suggests, the various interpretations of sustainable and
development will dictate a city s actions, due to the strategic selection of what is being sustained in a
sustainable city. For instance, Satterthwaite (1997) suggests that a sustainable city may be construed in
an entirely social manner, leading to the sustaining or rather preservation of existing social structures
within the city. Consequentially, the achievement of the United Nation s sustainable development is
compromised, since the economic and environmental aspects are left out of the scenario
(Satterthwaite, 1997). This example also exposes the anthropocentrism embedded in sustainability , as
human needs are often emphasized over environmental concerns. However, in this context, the
oppression of nature is to be expected since sustainable development is ultimately a Western construct
designed for human benefit and because of this, will never remedy the ecological crisis society has
created (Seghezzo, 2009).
A city contributing to sustainable development invokes a different set of actions according to
Satterthwaite (1997), as this compels populations to make tangible changes in consumer behaviour or
government structure, which consequentially fosters harmonization between social, economic and
environmental goals. This understanding supposedly leaves less room for interpretation, as the city s
actions are to follow a set of

Adversarial System Vs Inquisitorial System
The adversarial system is seen to create fewer truths than it performs justice, and fewer truths than
performs the inquisitorial system. The adversarial system is portrayed by a neutral choice producer
who assesses conflicting performances by opponents to a disagreement, assesses the values of those
performances, and reduces a decision that issues a positive result to one party and a consistent
negative result to the other. Adversarial system consists of decisional accuracy, procedural justice and
the pursuit of truth and fairness (Sevier, 2014). An adversarial, accusatorial system is like a
competition in which the prosecution is opposed against the defense. The adversarial, accusatorial
system is frequently compared with inquisitorial systems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are three situations in which Failure or omission to act is only criminal which are (1) when there
is a statute that creates a legal duty to act, (2) when there is a contract that creates a legal duty to act,
or (3) when there is a special relationship between the parties that creates a legal duty to act. The mens
rea is the specific mental state of the defendant at the time of the crime; a guilty mind. There are two
types of mens rea that are recognized which are general intent and specific intent. There are four
different types of knowing, purposeful, reckless and negligent. The concurrence of an illegal act and a
culpable mental state offers the third essential feature of crime, for those crimes that involve mens rea.
Concurrence commands that the act and the mental state happen together in order for a crime to take
place. Concurrence and culpable mental state should be linked and they should transpire in the
appropriate order, mens rea followed by the act. The mens rea is the one that sets the act into motion.
The perpetrator should shape the focused to murder, before captivating the action that caused in the
death of another individual for there to be purposeful or intentional murder. There must be a

Research Paper On Adolf Hitler
Who Was Adolf Hitler?
Do you know a powerful dictator that wanted to take all power? Well Hitler was just that, Adolf Hitler
was a German chancellor that wanted to take all power and conquer as many countries for power.
Hitler was also a dictator, he tried to most countries. Adolf Hitler never cared and wanted all power, he
killed jews for the fault of the loss of World War 1. Although Hitler had some skills that made him a
significant leader. Germany had been weak since the loss of World War 1 with the Weimar Republic,
This had some consequences for Germany. Although after Adolf Hitler became chancellor he made
Germany big again by rearming his army and taking power. The Weimar Republic
Before Hitler was chancellor the Weimar Republic was an unofficial, historical designation for the
German state. Weimar Republic flag for Germany was a striped flag going from one end to the other

mostly took place in Britain and France, most damages from the war were caused here. Although
Germany had lost this war, and Germany had to pay some consequences. Germany had to pay all the
reparations done in the war and Germany couldn t of had a big army according to the Treaty of

Intrusion Detection Systems And Data Fusion
In this part we will talk more deeply about this intrusion detection systems and data fusion.
Coming to intrusion detection systems it is defined as the problem of detecting the intruders who are
accessing the company s networks or systems without authorization. ID systems are categorized as:
1. Signature based detection: In this type the detection is based on signature or pattern of attacks
because any attack is targeted on vulnerabilities of a system
2. Anomaly based detection: In this type detection is based on looking for the anomalous behavior
based on reviewing the audit files and log files.
After categorization coming to the classification they are classified as:
1. Host based systems: In these systems they collect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ideal characteristics of an Intrusion detection system are:
It must work continually with minimal human interference
It must be error free by being able to recover from system crashes, either accidental or by malicious
activity.
Upon startup, the intrusion detection system must be able to recover its previous state and resume its
operation unaffected.
It must resist subversion. The intrusion detection system should be automated by monitoring itself
weather it has been compromised by an intruder
It must impose a minimal overhead on the system where it is running, to avoid interfering with the
system s normal operation.
It must be configurable according to the security policies of the system that is being monitored.
It must be adaptable over time to the advances. For example, new applications being installed, users
changing from one activity to another or new resources being available can cause changes in system
use patterns.
As the number of systems to be monitored increases and the chances of attacks increase we also
consider the following characteristics as desirable:
It must be scalable to monitor a large number of hosts while providing results in a timely and accurate
manner.
It must provide graceful degradation of service. If some components of the intrusion detection system
stop working for any reason, the rest of them should be affected as little as possible.
It must allow dynamic reconfiguration, allowing the

Los Angeles Times Policy Analysis
This first graph illustrates the diverse range of policy topics that the Los Angeles Times covered on
their front page during a full week. In the 56 stories analyzed, 20 different policy topics were covered.
The topic of law, crime, and family issues was covered most with roughly 18% of the coverage
followed by fires, weather and natural disasters, and immigration.
This graph shows that the Washington Post also had a diverse coverage of policy topics; however, not
as diverse as the Los Angeles Times. In the 56 stories analyzed, 14 different policy topics were
covered. Not surprisingly, government operations were covered most with 25% of the news coverage.
Law, crime, and family issues, health, and international affairs and foreign aid followed this.

much of the coverage throughout the week was different. With 75% more stories on government ...

determine what different readers are searching for, but observing the range of policy topics between
the publications, it shows their agendas are set differently. For example, the Los Angeles Times has

How Did Icarus Change Ovid s Life
The story of Daedalus and Icarus, reflected Ovid s changing thoughts and morals of his personal life
as he undergoes the life changing event of getting exiled by Emperor Augustus, through the characters
of the poem. Ovid is born an Icarus, innocent and naive, with no idea of how much danger awaits him
if he chooses to forsake his guide and soar in the boundless sky . Ovid s father planned for him to
become a political official, sending him to Rome to get an education, and then Athens. Ovid s anxious
father planned his future, as Daedalus planned Icarus s, in order to make sure their sons had
prosperous steady lives. (Ovid) At first both sons were cooperative; but then emboldened by their

shaded places by the leafy trees its nested eggs among the bush s twigs; , writes Ovid himself in
Daedalus and Icarus, nor does it seek to rise in lofty flight, for it is mindful of its former fall. The
Partridge keeps in the bushes, not all the way under the ground in poverty, as Ovid s father thought he
would be, but also not high in the sky, bold and arrogant enough at the success of his career, which
causes him to take risks. The Partridge enjoys a steady life, living the middle way. After Ovid s poem
and a mistake , which he told his readers himself was the reason that he was exiled, he lived a
relatively average life. He was miserable enough at first in his prison, but not because he lived in
poverty, the bottom ground. He lived a relatively comfortable life, treated extremely well by
inhabitants of Tomis, and as stated by Kenney, there are hints in the later poems that Ovid was even
becoming reconciled to his fate when death released him. Ovid continued to write the poetry he so
dearly loved, but they never reached the grand heights of his earlier successes. They attracted less
attention, and made no bold statements anyone might find offensive. The once brilliant genius, Perdix,
who had surpassed even Daedalus himself, had learned

Drums History
Drums have existed for a very long time. Some say they even date back to 6000 BC. It is no wonder
then, that they have been used for a variety of situations and have evolved to create a wide range of
different types. This being said, all drums, or membranophones (the technical classification), consist
of at least one drum head or drum skin. This is stretched over a shell and beaten either by hand or
instrument to produce its sound. Most commonly it is used as a musical instrument as a part of the
percussion group, to be used in rituals or entertainment such as modern day s rock bands. Throughout
the world, drums have been created from many materials, including wood, metal, plastic and even
clay.
The material of the drum skin can also vary from place to place, culture to culture. The skins of

A drum can have two heads on either side of the body, or alternatively, one drum head on the top of
the body. There are drums which have been designed to be easy to carry around, such as those used in

When we listen to music such as rock, the drums we are hearing are inevitably part of the
aforementioned drum kit a selection of drums that are non pitched and can be used together in
harmony. The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of
music genres can use them to create their preferred sound.
The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking
about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller kick drum and the pitched bass drums. Orchestral drums
are the larger of the three and are primarily used in orchestral concerts. The kick drum is the largest
drum in a drum kit and is utilized with a foot pedal. The last one mentioned, the pitched bass drum, is
a popular choice for marching parades and the drums

The Mythological Accounts of the Founding of Rome
The mythological accounts of the founding of Rome are:
Aeneas as Founder of Rome:
The Trojan prince Aeneas is sometimes credited with the founding of Rome as the culmination of his
post Trojan War adventures, but the version of the Roman foundation myth that is most familiar is that
of Romulus, the first king of Rome.
Birth of Romulus and Remus
Romulus and Remus were twin brothers, the sons of a virgin named Rhea Silvia ( also called Ilia) and
the god Mars, according to legend. The grandfather, Numitor, and the great uncle, Amulius, who
between them divided the wealth and kingdom of Alba Longa, a city founded by Aeneas son Ascanius,

Ascanius, son of Aeneas, decided to build a new city, which he named Alba Longa, under the Alban

Aeneas was hospitably entertained at the house of Latinus; there Latinus, in the presence of his
household gods, cemented the public league by a family one, by giving Aeneas his daughter in
marriage. This event fully confirmed the Trojans in the hope of at length terminating their wanderings
by a lasting and permanent settlement. They built a town, which Aeneas called Lavinium after the
name of his wife. Shortly afterward also, a son was the issue of the recently concluded marriage, to
whom his parents gave the name of Ascanius.
Plutarch on Possible Founders of Rome:
... Roma, from whom this city was so called, was daughter of Italus and Leucaria; or, by another
account, of Telephus, Hercules s son, and that she was married to Aeneas, or ... to Ascanius, Aeneas s
son. Some tell us that Romanus, the son of Ulysses and Circe, built it; some, Romus the son of
Emathion, Diomede having sent him from Troy; and others, Romus, king of the Latins, after driving
out the Tyrrhenians, who had come from Thessaly into Lydia, and from thence into Italy.

Christmas Eve
Christmas is magical in the eyes of a child. At least, that s how it was for me. Every year, as the month
of December rolled around, the lights were strung and the trees were set up, I sent my letter out with a
hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on Christmas Eve. The December
of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he
would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas
morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum colored, shiny, and fully charged electric scooter
and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one. They were perched on their small silver kickstands in
front of our eight foot tree that was weighed down with years worth of homemade and souvenir
ornaments. The scooters were free of a box or wrapping, just how Santa always brought the gifts. As
soon as the all of the presents were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I pranced outside to test out my
new ride. It was a crisp, wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised back and forth on the scooter in
front of my house for hours, accelerating on the uphills and coasting on the downhills with the cold
wind blowing through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink from the low temperatures. It was
my absolute favorite present. Fast forward a few days, the Saturday following Christmas, and I was

Pursuit of Interpersonal Communication
Pursuit of Interpersonal Communication Pursuit of Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal
communication is a very vital part of everybody s life and success. This is because in our everyday
lives, we communicate with people directly even if we do not want to. It was said by Confucius Tell
me and I ll forget. Show me and I ll remember. Involve me and I ll understand. This is very true
because people tend to forget things that they are not interested in. So if your interpersonal
communication is good, they will be more interested in the conversation and will recall that

Psychological information is based on the habits or mannerisms of the communicators. If one knows
psychological information about the communicator then he or she is very knowledgeable about the
other person s behaviors. Other than the levels of information, there are also three levels of knowing
which are descriptive, predictive, and explanatory. Just like the levels of information, as you go from
descriptive to explanatory, the levels of knowing get more interpersonal. Descriptive level of knowing
shows that one can physically characterize a person to another person. But not only do you have to be
able to describe him or her, the description must be good enough to where someone else will be able
to distinguish the person being described. Predictive level of knowing is just like the word itself. If
one is at this level of knowing then he or she should be able to predict the other person s behaviors and
habits. The last level of knowing is explanatory. At this level not only are you able to predict his or her
behavior, one is able to explain why he or she acts in that manner. One should be able to explain the
reasons why he or she does the thing they do. The last two characteristics in the developmental
perspectives are the intrinsic and extrinsic rules. These are the rules that govern the communication
between the people involved. Extrinsic rules are basically society s rules. This governs

Issues
First and foremost, the most pressing issue and reason for the current greenways project rests on the
desire of the citizenry to realize and exercise alternative means of transportation. Indiana, like most
mid western states, is heavily dependent upon fossil fuels and recognizes the strong hold that fuel
economies have on its citizens. In Life After Oil Jeremiah Creedon states, Oil supplies are dwindling

are already appearing in the form of climbing gasoline prices, electricity shortages, and skyrocketing

Analysis Of The Bonfire Of The Vanities
In the book, The Bonfire of the Vanities written by Tom Wolfe, Sherman McCoy is one of the many
characters that exhibit internal corruption. Thanks to his position at the very top of the social pyramid,
Sherman McCoy lives a sheltered life and possesses no knowledge about those outside his very
limited circle of influence. As a result, when confronted with a situation far outside his insulated
world, he panics, resulting in the destruction of himself and others. Sherman s ridiculous belief that
insulation is necessary for survival, his egoistic views as well as his greed are the very things that lead
to the death of his insulated lifestyle. One of the very first things Wolfe points out about Sherman
McCoy other than his ongoing affair is his tendency to only associate himself with certain people,
which was mainly with people of high status. On his way to work, Sherman walks towards the taxies
to take one to work. During the ride, he mentions being told that If you want to live in New York, ...
you ve got to insulate ... meaning insulate yourself from those people [referring to the normal, non
masterful breed of people] (54). Sherman s direct correlation to his father and how he still travels to
work by the subway, even as the chief executive officer of Dunning Sponget Leach at the age of
seventy one (54) shows the contrast between their lives and how Sherman views that living a life
where he did not have to associate himself with those out of his breed (54) was essential for survival
in New York City. Sherman getting lost during his drive with Maria from the airport is a prime
example of his lack knowledge of New York outside of Manhattan. Deep into the Bronx, Sherman
could no longer tell where he was going (83). His panic only makes it worse as he is unable to drive
out the area and keeps driving in circles. This shows that his limited knowledge of the world around
him are the root of his issues, since getting lost in the Bronx was the first step to his spiral down to
despair. One of Sherman McCoy s chief flaws is his massive ego. This is shown throughout the book,
where we see that he does not associate himself with anyone other than those he works with, and even
then, does so with those on his

Rhetoric In Socrates The Gorgias
The Gorgias is a dialogue in which Socrates expresses his ideas with others about rhetoric. From the
dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on
ethical and epistemic grounds. Socrates argues that rhetoric is not a real knowledge because it is not a
legitimate art, and that the teachers of rhetoric are nothing but fraudsters. In addition, he asserts that
rhetoric is ethically bankrupt and its main objective is to gratify the ignorant and enhance its experts
power to practice it. It tends to manipulate ignorant individuals into believing on imaginative things.
Therefore, Socrates argues that it is not real art, because a real art should depict a purified rationalism
and knowledge that maintains the changeless good. As a result, Socrates draws a sharp line between
rhetoric and real art or knowledge.
In his argument with Polus, Socrates seems to provide a level ground for both charges against rhetoric.
Socrates asserts that rhetoric is an emperia and a knack based experience. It is a piece of flattery
whose objective is to gratify and provide pleasure, and that it degenerates ethically (Pratt, 2015).
According to Socrates, rhetoric is not part of art. Instead, he refers to it as a flattery giving four

The Theme Of Faith In Mania Salinger s The Storyteller
The Storyteller has four parallel stories. Sage is a brilliant baker who works at night, living a limited
lonely life in a small town. She keeps a scar on her face hidden, is involved in a hopeless romantic
affair, and is drawn to Josef, a beloved neighbourhood old timer who frequently visits the bakery.
Minka grows up in Lodz and is forced into the ghetto with her family. Eventually she is sent on a
transport to Auschwitz and we closely follow the impossible hardships she endures and ultimately
survives. Franz and Reiner are two German brothers different as can be; one a serious sensitive
student, the other a fighter; both end up in the SS. Meanwhile we read Minka s fiction, chapters of a
dark Gothic romance about a baker s daughter and two demon brothers who terrorize a village. Minka
s biography is compiled from multiple survivors, including various threads from Mania Salinger s own
memoir, Looking Back. Picoult says Mania reminds her of her own grandma. Salinger was eager to

showcased when Ania actually gives shelter to the upior Alek. When the world saw him only as an

AIDS Epidemic In 1980s America
Exploring the AIDS Epidemic in 1980s America
Angels in America examines the spread AIDS throughout the 1980s and the ways that people reacted
towards it. It s a serious play about politics, history, spirituality, and death...It was not only an attack
on 1980s Reaganism, but also on the conservative movement of the U.S. politics and culture since the
end of World War II (Bronski 58). Angels in America represents an act of resistance and asks the
audience whether change is possible. This question takes on a whole new meaning for the audience,
who has the added benefit of hindsight.

We are able to see the ways in which this process occurs and cultural productions are not only ideas,
but have a reality in the way that they are played out on the bodies of the characters. We are able to see
that the way that disease is conceptualized directly impacts the response of the government and the
medical community to the disease, the types of support made available to people afflicted by disease
and the various amounts of oppression or discrimination that they may encounter in their everyday
lives as a result. Ideas about homosexuality and AIDS affect the type of treatment that Prior receives
and the way that his loved ones interact with him. The 1980s were particularly devastating for the gay
men. 1985 marked the beginning of President Reagan s second term. Reagan is mentioned several
times over the course of part 1 not only to set a political backdrop for the series, but also challenges
the audience to question why the government was so slow to respond to this issue. Reagan didn t even
give his first speech on HIV/AIDS until years after the on start of the epidemic and after thousands of
lives had been lost. In this context, it is fair to assume that HIV/AIDS really became an epidemic
through the lack of immediate action from the government and medical establishments that can be
directly attributed to homophobic. From its onset, there was widespread fear of contamination as
AIDS was constructed as a fatal infectious disease that threatened to wipe out mankind. It was also
seen as a gay plague or punishment for sexually abnormal behavior. Angels in America is not merely a
political critique, but an act of political resistance and a beacon of hope. In the final scene, Prior
delivers a stirring monologue, the audience sees that we are not doomed to repeat the mistakes of our
past. It takes place in 1990, Prior

Review Of Billie Holiday s Song Strange Fruit
Protest Music Assignment For this assignment, I chose the song Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. She
first performed this song in 1939, several years after the Civil War took place, but before the end of
the Jim Crow South. Billie Holiday was born in the North, which was more supportive of equality
between the races, but she was African American, and this was something that affected her life, even if
she did not live in the South. This song is a protest song, subtle as it may be, against lynching and the
Jim Crow Laws. It describes the lynching, and what can be seen after this deed is performed. Using
imagery and metaphors, she demonstrates the wrongs of the Jim Crow South and lynching. This song
was inducted into the Grammy Hall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the very first line of the song states Southern trees bear strange fruit , referring to the
men being lynched to strange fruit. They are hanging from the tree, and they are strange fruit because
that is not something that a tree produces. This however is a subtle metaphor for this action. A few
lines down, she sings Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze , which is clearly about lynching.
After this, Billie s song goes, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh. Then the sudden smell of burning
flesh , which shows a contrast between the peace and calm, and then the abrupt disruption of nature by
the white men. She is obviously putting the smell in a negative light by describing the sweet flowers
first, and how the overbearing smell disturbed it. The final important line is Here is fruit for the crows
to pluck , which is referring to the Jim Crow South and the white men that take part in the lynching.
They literally pick out someone that they do not like just because of the color of their skin and they
lynch them. Billie Holiday s song ends with here is a strange and bitter crop , which still compares
African American men to crops that have been picked (lynched), and after that they are just left there
and no one gives another thought about

Automotive Ethics Of The Automotive Industry Essay
Automotive ethics is a subject that is often over looked. Not many people look at what is ethical in the
automotive industry, most people are generally happy if they can get a good deal on a car. However,
automotive ethics has an affect on how automobiles are made, what rules the government puts on
them, and their danger on the environment. Before the engine was invented, life revolved around a
much more complicated system of transportation. Much advancement in technology has been made to
make the common lifestyle today much easier, For example, cellular telephones and onboard
navigation systems (gps) in automobiles. Cellular telephones and navigation systems (gps) have
become an everyday item, but nobody looks at the dangers that can have while operating a motor
vehicle. Before the invention of the modern day engine, lifestyles were completely different. Letters
were sent by horse in wagons, people traveled by horses and other such animals, often taking an entire
day to go twenty miles. The first fuel engine was not invented until 1923. It only took one year before
this engine was put into automobiles, making the lives of the public much easier. The invention of the
engine not only made it possible to travel by road, but also by water and air. Mail, letters and more
were no longer delivered by horses and families were able to travel from one place to another in less
than a day. However, the affects of the modern day engine can be seen all over the world. For

Domestic Policies Of Thomas Jefferson, William Harding,...
The domestic policies of Thomas Jefferson, William Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Ronald Reagan
varied greatly as they were set forth during different time periods. Firstly, Thomas Jefferson wanted a
government that would respect the power of individual states, operate with a smaller bureaucracy, and
cut its debts. He believed that the government would stimulate the growth of agriculture and therefore
bolster the economy. William Harding, who was president from 1921 to 1923, supported the
Immigration Quota Act of 1921 which made it more difficult for immigrants from Eastern and
Southern Europe to enter the country. Harding was also determined to make the federal government
serve United States business interests. Additionally, from 1923 to 1929, Calvin Coolidge was
outspoken in his support for civil rights for African Americans and Natives. He also believed that the
federal government should not intervene in local affairs. Finally, Ronald Reagan was president from
1981 to 1989, and he set out to cut taxes and deregulate some industries. Reagan hoped that
deregulation would lower costs and boost profits for employers while lowering prices for consumers.
Ultimately, from 1801 to 1989, the United States changed greatly economically, politically, and
socially causing presidents domestic policies to change as well. Firstly, Thomas Jefferson held office
from 1801 to 1809 and established a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from

Crossing Within Polylingual Families With Contested Structure
Introduction
This research seeks to examine crossing within polylingual families with contested structure. I
analyzed a scene from the television show Trailer Park Boys in which a three member family interact
using the concepts of crossing, facework, and footing, in order to answer my research question. I
found that the central character uses crossing as a method of performing facework. As a result of this,
he also indicates preference and dispreference to his family members.
Theoretical Framework
Crossing involves someone speaking in another language, dialect, or pattern which feels distinctly
other (Rampton, 2000, p. 54). This can occur in a wide variety of contexts such as first generation
Americans using English in a non English household in order to embrace one cultural system over
another. Or, using a different pattern of speech around a significant other s parents in order to convey
positive social values. In the case of the scene I analyzed, the central character s language is already
crossed as he is a white man speaking almost exclusively African American Vernacular English
(AAVE). He further uses crossing to interact with his Hispanic girlfriend. As a character, his crossed
language is one of his most defining qualities, making him an interesting case study. Because of the
character s use of AAVE as a white man, he can be juxtaposed with Mike , the person of interest in a
study of white teens and AAVE adoption (Cutler, 1999). Mike, like Jamie, the main

The Concept of Power Essay
The concept of power is present within various realms of all organizations. Power, however, is not
something that should necessarily be looked at negatively. There are justifiable types of power that
may be important to criminal justice organizations. The main role of power in criminal justice
administration should be to gain compliance from subordinates of all types, and turn that power over
time into acceptable forms of authority (Stojkovic et al., 2008). It is for this reason that power is an

Essay 2: Max Weber s study of authority gave birth to his division and classification of three types of
authority. These classifications of authority are often used in various roles in criminal justice
administrations. While Weber believed that power and authority are decidedly different concepts, the
two can be used in conjunction, and often are used for categorization within criminal justice agencies.
Traditional, charismatic, and legal authorities are all well defined in the use of authority by criminal
justice administrations. Traditional authority is leadership that is based on the historical customs of a
society or group. Within an organization, traditional authority is based on the precedented methods of
operation that have changed little over time (Stojkovic et al., 2008). In relation to the criminal justice
administration, one may view traditional authority in the form of commanding power of a warden
within a corrections system. The warden is the head of the hierarchy and operates simply in the way
that a warden always has operated. In respect to traditional authority, things do not change because
procedures are based on customs and merely continue as they always have. Weber s second type of
influence is charismatic authority. Charismatic authority is characterized by a leader with rare personal
features that attract others to them. Charismatic leaders have qualities that are powerful and

Battle Of Layac Junction Essay
Battle of Layac Junction
December 7, 1941, Japanese air and naval forces struck multiple areas within the Pacific to include
Kota Bharu in British Malaya, Singora in Thailand, Guam, Hong Kong, and the Philippine Islands.
One of the prominent attacks targeted Pearl Harbor, marking the United States declaration of war
against Japan, in which the United States entered World War II. The capture of the Philippine Islands
served as a crucial effort to the Empire of Japan in ensuring the control of the Southwest Pacific

served in effectively delaying Japan s conquest of South Asia.

Teenagers shouldn t drive real small cars or SUVs because they are prone to roll over. Many teens that
I have talked said the perfect car for them would be a car with a banging sound system, tinted
windows, dubbs (20 in. rims), and a loud racing muffler.
Here are a couple of cars that we think are very suitable for today s teen.
The 1998 Volkswagen Beetle (Bug) is our top choice for a teen car. It s stylish, hip, and a little sporty
looking. We choose the Bug because it s a new classic. This model s bug came standard with a 2.0 liter
V4 engine giving out 115 horsepower making it at a top speed of 120 mph. This bug can hold 14.5
gallons of gas getting 22/27 mpg in the city/highway. It seats comfortable 4 small adults. This car was
recommended by the IIHS as their Best Pick in 1998 for safety in its class. The Bug received a Good
on the IIHS rating system. As a used car the 1998 Bug would probably run you close to $ 8,000.
Are next car was the 1998 Toyota Corolla. It s sleek looking, with cool, crisp lines. This car came
standard with a 1.8 liter engine giving out 120 horsepower making top speed at 125 mph. The Corolla
can hold 13.2 gallons of gas getting 28/36 mpg in the city/highway. This car can seat 4 adults
comfortable. The Corolla was given an Average rating from the IIHS. A used Corolla would probably
run you about $ 6,500 in today s market. The prices for these cars were estimated from

Benefits And Benefits Of Retirement Program
Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution When we are young we tend to not think about the future and
what we can do today to ensure we are able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Financial planning is
extremely important to all of us whether we are wanting a new boat in the near future or a retirement
home in Arizona. As a young adult entering the workforce straight out of high school or a recent
college graduate, choices will be made as to the type of career you will follow, the location of
employment, the employer and the starting wages all of these will affect our financial future. Some
decisions are made for us, such as what type of retirement program(s) are offered by our employer,
will you enroll or do they offer them at all. Since the turn of the century it is no longer commonplace
for someone to start their employment career and end it with the same employer. Therefore, when
researching a future employer, understanding the retirement plans of a defined benefit or a defined
contribution plan are enormously important to future financial security. The benefits and shortfalls
differences Retirement Plans Defined Benefit Plan Values of the plan. A defined benefit plan (DB)
allows the employee to know exactly how much money they will receive during their retirement years.

The Effect Of Explicit Lexical Elaboration On Second...
Several researchers in the area of input modification have examined the effect of this technique on
second language learner s comprehension (Oh, 2001; Brewer, 2008; Maxwell, 2011) and others
investigate its effect not only on comprehension but also on vocabulary learning (Urano, 2000; Kim,
1996). Some studies showed that there was no significant difference in learning second language
vocabularies between using reading elaborated text with unmodified texts (Chung, 1995; Kim; 1996;
Silvia, 2000).
Mosavi (2014) investigate the effect of explicit lexical elaboration on second language vocabulary
learning in writing of 70 Iranian learners. Learners were randomly divided into two groups, both
groups had the same reading text but for elaborated version target words had its synonyms or
definitions right after them, for example, X has the same meaning as Y, which can be named as the
most explicit elaboration device. A time limit was conducted for learners to read the text, in the
elaborated group, learners were asked to pay attention to the target form while reading. When they
finished the reading process they had to answer the reading comprehension questions and after that
write a paragraph with the same topic with the reading comprehension text. This writing considers as
the post test which learners do not have the permission for using dictionaries, peer help or teacher
guidance. They just had the topic familiarity. The results of this study revealed that if learners write

Summary Of The Exegesis Of Rappaccini s Daughter
Though the two previously analyzed parabolic short stories assist in showing Hawthorne s writing
style and goals, the exegesis of his most convoluted and allegorical story, Rappaccini s Daughter, truly
accomplishes this exposition of Hawthorne s work. In Padua, Italy, Giovanni Guasconti rents a room
with a view of Dr. Rappaccini s garden. He meets professor Dr. Pietro Baglioni, who tells Giovanni
that be must be cautious of Rappaccini since he is heartless and cares only about his scientific work.
Giovanni notices Rappaccini s beautiful daughter, Beatrice, as falls in love. They meet with each other
several times and Giovanni realizes he has become poisonous, as plants are dying in his hands.
Baglioni reveals that Beatrice has grown up constantly exposed to poison and is poisonous herself, so
he gives Giovanni a vial of medicine to give to Beatrice as a cure, but when she takes it she promptly
dies. Literary critic Roy R. Male introduces the involved nature of the story and expresses, This
complexity manifests itself first in the objects of the garden, the Eden of the present world (Male). Just
like The Birthmark, Rappaccini s Daughter tells of death caused by human pride, but this is trivial.
The allegorical nature of this story lies in its biblical connection. Rappaccini s garden symbolizes the
garden of Eden and the story and its characters directly follow that of the creation of man, the creation
of sin and the breakage of worldly perfection. Giovanni represents Adam, Beatrice is Eve, Rappaccini
plays God and Baglioni acts as Satan. Giovanni and Beatrice are Adam and Eve since they are two
innocent characters who fall victim to the deception and sinful malicious intent of Baglioni.
Rappaccini is God because his primary role is to create and construct. Since Hawthorne makes an
allegorical link to the Garden of Eden, the story can be perceived in the context of the New Testament.
Assuming the reader comprehends Hawthorne s connection, they are then able to interpret a much
more involved story with greater insight. Rappaccini s Daughter can be interpreted as a parable, but
can also be seen as the more complex allegory that it is. Further, Hawthorne exposes a duality in evil
through his allegory. Male

Jeremy Bentham Research Paper
English philosopher, economist, and theoretical judge are only a few words that describe Jeremy
Bentham, but one word that really sums up what he was, utilitarianism. Born in February 1748 in
London, England. His mother was the daughter of a shop clerk and his father and grandfather was well
established lawyer with a small practice, but most of the family s income came from his father s
purchase and selling of land. During his early childhood years, Bentham displayed a remarkable gift
for learning. By the time he was four years of age his father began to teach Bentham Latin and Greek
while sitting on his knee at night. These lessons would prove to be the foundation that Bentham would
build on while attending Westminster school where he accelerated in Latin. ... Show more content on

This is where his love for books and language was accelerated as got older. By the age of seven
Bentham began learning French and reading books by Burnet s Theory of the Earth, Cave s Lives of
the Apostles, Stow s Chronicles, Rapin s History,Gil Blas, Plutarch s Lives, Mandeville s Fable of the
Bees, and Clarissa Harlowe . (Victorian web) In 1760 1764 Bentham was accepted and a resident of
Queens College, Oxford. It took Bentham only four years to achieve his Bachelor of Arts degree
making him one of the youngest to graduate from Queens College at the age of six teen. However, his
graduation was all contingent on him swearing to the 39 articles of the Church of England. Bentham
had a hard time accepting them and faced a moral dilemma. He could not swear to the 39 articles, this
would stop him from receiving his degree or swear to the 39 articles and receive his

Essay on 19th-Century Medicine in the United Kingdom 19th Century Medicine in the United Kingdom Professor comments: In this paper, the student synthesizes several sources about nineteenth century medicine and medical education into a focused and coherent essay that provides information about aspects of this topic especially relevant to understanding Lydgate s position in Middlemarch: the differences among physicians, apothecaries, and surgeons, both in terms of training and duties on the one hand, social status on the other; the processes by which someone obtained a medical education and became a licensed practitioner; and the differences in English, Scottish, and French training. In doing so, the student displays an awareness of the importance of the contextual material for more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of the problem with educating and licensing doctors was in the conflicting struggle for rights and power between licensing bodies; there were nineteen of them in the United Kingdom alone. There was also no representation of any reputable doctors within the medical universities and corporations that voted in Parliamentary elections. By the end of the century, medical training facilities were forced to upgrade their standards due to pressure within some parts of the medical community and because discoveries in fields like chemistry and physics ultimately led to advances in medicine. Early nineteenth century medical training was extremely diverse. While some practitioners held university degrees from the most respected medical colleges of the world, some were apprenticed to apothecaries where they spent most of their time capping bottles and rolling pills (Youngson 12). Still others were quacks and drug peddlers who practiced freely with no legal sanctions against them. There was, in the United Kingdom, a defined social structure of medical men which was divided into three orders. There were three divisions of legitimate medical groups. They were the Royal College of Physician, the Royal College of Surgeons, and the Society of Apothecaries. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mathematical Theory Of Mathematics And Mathematics In Mathematics, it is rare that a new branch of mathematics is introduced. That means that even branches of math that have been around for hundreds of years are still technically new, or at least relatively new. One such branch of mathematics is probability. Probability is only three hundred to four hundred years old, so it easily falls into this category when compared to branches of mathematics such as Geometry which dates back all the way to ancient Egypt in around 2900 BC, when it first became important when an Egyptian pharaoh wanted to tax farmers who raised crops along the Nile River. To compute the correct amount of tax, the pharaoh s agents had to be able to measure the amount of land being cultivated. Later it was used to build the pyramids. Probability s beginning happened because of recreational circumstances. A gambler s dispute in 1654 led to the creation of the mathematical theory of probability by two famous French mathematicians, Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat. Antoine Gombaud, Chevalier de Méré, a French nobleman with an interest in gaming and gambling questions, called Pascal s attention to an apparent contradiction concerning a popular dice game. The game consisted in throwing a pair of dice 24 times; the problem was to decide whether or not to bet even money on the occurrence of at least one double six during the 24 throws. A seemingly well established gambling rule led de Méré to believe that betting on a double six in 24 throws would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Advertisement Of A Mcdonald s Advertisement We see advertisements and commercials all the time in our daily lives. Sometimes, though, more often than not, we over look things that might be presented to us, without even realizing it. A McDonald s advertisement is something everyone is familiar with. Whether we are ignoring the subtleties that are hidden in the advertisements message, or we are paying attention to the tricks that are being used to draw us in, McDonalds knows how to make an effective ad. At the beginning of the McDonald s ad we see the front yard of a little girl s house as her mother does yard work in the background. As the little girl sits on the sidewalk steps, we find that she has a grey cloud hovering over her head. We hear a piano jingle from the beginning of the commercial as it zooms in to show the glum look on her face when she looks up at the cloud. Trying to scoot out from underneath the cloud she realizes it doesn t work because the cloud follows her. Even blowing at it doesn t work. Instantly Ronald McDonald walks up and says, hi there (McDonalds). Her face lights up just long enough to say hi back. He looks at the cloud and kneels down to her level. He mentions her day is going bad and with a sad look she replies, I ll say (McDonalds). After he tells her it could be worse, the cloud begins to rain on her. With sarcasm she then says, Awesome (McDonalds). This is when the piano jingle changes from instrumental to spoken words. Ronald then reaches up and grabs the cloud as the words in ... • 7. President George W. Bush s Afghanistan Derek Howard Ryan Wagner Noah Egli Jack O Connor Afghanistan Current Problem: The current problem that is occurring in Afghanistan is the fact that American soldiers are over at Afghanistan right now. After the 9/11 attack, President George W. Bush puts together a plan to attack Afghanistan. America sends over a warning, to either turn over Osama bin Laden, the man in charge of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, or we ll bomb you. After Afghanistan refused to turn him over, due to lack of evidence that he was in charge of the 9/11 attacks, America, with the help of it s allies, countries like the United Kingdom and the Northern Alliance, bombed Afghanistan. Through all of this madness, Osama bin Laden escaped. After all the stuff that just happened in Afghanistan, President George W. Bush called for America to reconstruct Afghanistan . This would include going over there, building a new government, and helping the people of Afghanistan to live a nonviolent life. After a decade of America being in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden being killed, and two new presidents in Afghanistan, we are left with a big problem, American soldiers are still in Afghanistan, and we have no idea when they will be able to come back. We can not just take some helicopters, fly over to Afghanistan, pick up our troops, and fly back to America. The reason why we can t is because Afghanistan s government is too unstable. Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, war and weaving, and one of the few female wisdom gods in ancient cultures (Cartwright 1). In Mesopotamian culture, the goddess of wisdom, arts, crafts and magic was known as Ea or Enki (Mark, Enki 1). Thoth was the Egyptian god of wisdom, magic, and writing. Egyptians considered him one of the most important gods of their culture (Mark, Thoth 1). His parents were the Sun God, Anu and Namunu, the mother goddess (Mark, Enki 3). Athena and Thoth s birth from the head symbolize their wisdom and focus on knowledge. Athena s physical appearance contradicts that of Thoth, but is comparable to that of Enki. Athena s femininity distinguish her from the other gods of wisdom. She, like the other Greek gods, has the body and appearance of a human being, but her beauty outshadowed those of the humans. Enki had wings and a long beard, but otherwise has a human figure. He looked as though he was an elderly philosopher, which was fitting because he was the holder of all knowledge in the Mesopotamian culture. • 9. Essay on Critical Commentary on Urban Sustainability Introduction Since the late 1980s, the notion of sustainable development has transcended beyond the eminent United Nations report titled Our Common Future, to mainstream dialogue throughout the globe at all scales within government and public spheres. This form of development seeks to balance current environmental, social and economic needs of the population, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987, 43). Used interchangeably with sustainability (Seghezzo, 2009), the concept has been fastened to a plethora of themes, including that of cities where urban sustainability speaks to negligent urban expansion and resource depletion. However, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the wordplay in Satterthwaite s title suggests, the various interpretations of sustainable and development will dictate a city s actions, due to the strategic selection of what is being sustained in a sustainable city. For instance, Satterthwaite (1997) suggests that a sustainable city may be construed in an entirely social manner, leading to the sustaining or rather preservation of existing social structures within the city. Consequentially, the achievement of the United Nation s sustainable development is compromised, since the economic and environmental aspects are left out of the scenario (Satterthwaite, 1997). This example also exposes the anthropocentrism embedded in sustainability , as human needs are often emphasized over environmental concerns. However, in this context, the oppression of nature is to be expected since sustainable development is ultimately a Western construct designed for human benefit and because of this, will never remedy the ecological crisis society has created (Seghezzo, 2009). A city contributing to sustainable development invokes a different set of actions according to Satterthwaite (1997), as this compels populations to make tangible changes in consumer behaviour or government structure, which consequentially fosters harmonization between social, economic and environmental goals. This understanding supposedly leaves less room for interpretation, as the city s actions are to follow a set of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas morning was perfect! • 22. Analysis Of The Bonfire Of The Vanities In the book, The Bonfire of the Vanities written by Tom Wolfe, Sherman McCoy is one of the many characters that exhibit internal corruption. Thanks to his position at the very top of the social pyramid, Sherman McCoy lives a sheltered life and possesses no knowledge about those outside his very limited circle of influence. As a result, when confronted with a situation far outside his insulated world, he panics, resulting in the destruction of himself and others. Sherman s ridiculous belief that insulation is necessary for survival, his egoistic views as well as his greed are the very things that lead to the death of his insulated lifestyle. One of the very first things Wolfe points out about Sherman McCoy other than his ongoing affair is his tendency to only associate himself with certain people, which was mainly with people of high status. On his way to work, Sherman walks towards the taxies to take one to work. During the ride, he mentions being told that If you want to live in New York, ... you ve got to insulate ... meaning insulate yourself from those people [referring to the normal, non masterful breed of people] (54). Sherman s direct correlation to his father and how he still travels to work by the subway, even as the chief executive officer of Dunning Sponget Leach at the age of seventy one (54) shows the contrast between their lives and how Sherman views that living a life where he did not have to associate himself with those out of his breed (54) was essential for survival in New York City. Sherman getting lost during his drive with Maria from the airport is a prime example of his lack knowledge of New York outside of Manhattan. Deep into the Bronx, Sherman could no longer tell where he was going (83). His panic only makes it worse as he is unable to drive out the area and keeps driving in circles. This shows that his limited knowledge of the world around him are the root of his issues, since getting lost in the Bronx was the first step to his spiral down to despair. One of Sherman McCoy s chief flaws is his massive ego. This is shown throughout the book, where we see that he does not associate himself with anyone other than those he works with, and even then, does so with those on his ... • 23. Rhetoric In Socrates The Gorgias The Gorgias is a dialogue in which Socrates expresses his ideas with others about rhetoric. From the dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on ethical and epistemic grounds. Socrates argues that rhetoric is not a real knowledge because it is not a legitimate art, and that the teachers of rhetoric are nothing but fraudsters. In addition, he asserts that rhetoric is ethically bankrupt and its main objective is to gratify the ignorant and enhance its experts power to practice it. It tends to manipulate ignorant individuals into believing on imaginative things. Therefore, Socrates argues that it is not real art, because a real art should depict a purified rationalism and knowledge that maintains the changeless good. As a result, Socrates draws a sharp line between rhetoric and real art or knowledge. In his argument with Polus, Socrates seems to provide a level ground for both charges against rhetoric. Socrates asserts that rhetoric is an emperia and a knack based experience. She keeps a scar on her face hidden, is involved in a hopeless romantic affair, and is drawn to Josef, a beloved neighbourhood old timer who frequently visits the bakery. Minka grows up in Lodz and is forced into the ghetto with her family. Eventually she is sent on a transport to Auschwitz and we closely follow the impossible hardships she endures and ultimately survives. Franz and Reiner are two German brothers different as can be; one a serious sensitive student, the other a fighter; both end up in the SS. Meanwhile we read Minka s fiction, chapters of a dark Gothic romance about a baker s daughter and two demon brothers who terrorize a village. It was also seen as a gay plague or punishment for sexually abnormal behavior. Angels in America is not merely a political critique, but an act of political resistance and a beacon of hope. • 29. Review Of Billie Holiday s Song Strange Fruit Protest Music Assignment For this assignment, I chose the song Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. She first performed this song in 1939, several years after the Civil War took place, but before the end of the Jim Crow South. Billie Holiday was born in the North, which was more supportive of equality between the races, but she was African American, and this was something that affected her life, even if she did not live in the South. This song is a protest song, subtle as it may be, against lynching and the Jim Crow Laws. It describes the lynching, and what can be seen after this deed is performed. Using imagery and metaphors, she demonstrates the wrongs of the Jim Crow South and lynching. This song was inducted into the Grammy Hall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the very first line of the song states Southern trees bear strange fruit , referring to the men being lynched to strange fruit. They are hanging from the tree, and they are strange fruit because that is not something that a tree produces. This however is a subtle metaphor for this action. A few lines down, she sings Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze , which is clearly about lynching. After this, Billie s song goes, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh. Then the sudden smell of burning flesh , which shows a contrast between the peace and calm, and then the abrupt disruption of nature by the white men. She is obviously putting the smell in a negative light by describing the sweet flowers first, and how the overbearing smell disturbed it. The final important line is Here is fruit for the crows to pluck , which is referring to the Jim Crow South and the white men that take part in the lynching. They literally pick out someone that they do not like just because of the color of their skin and they lynch them. • 35. Crossing Within Polylingual Families With Contested Structure Introduction This research seeks to examine crossing within polylingual families with contested structure. I analyzed a scene from the television show Trailer Park Boys in which a three member family interact using the concepts of crossing, facework, and footing, in order to answer my research question. I found that the central character uses crossing as a method of performing facework. As a result of this, he also indicates preference and dispreference to his family members. Theoretical Framework Crossing involves someone speaking in another language, dialect, or pattern which feels distinctly other (Rampton, 2000, p. 54). This can occur in a wide variety of contexts such as first generation Americans using English in a non English household in order to embrace one cultural system over another. Or, using a different pattern of speech around a significant other s parents in order to convey positive social values. In the case of the scene I analyzed, the central character s language is already crossed as he is a white man speaking almost exclusively African American Vernacular English (AAVE). He further uses crossing to interact with his Hispanic girlfriend. As a character, his crossed language is one of his most defining qualities, making him an interesting case study. These classifications of authority are often used in various roles in criminal justice administrations. While Weber believed that power and authority are decidedly different concepts, the two can be used in conjunction, and often are used for categorization within criminal justice agencies. Traditional, charismatic, and legal authorities are all well defined in the use of authority by criminal justice administrations. Traditional authority is leadership that is based on the historical customs of a society or group. Within an organization, traditional authority is based on the precedented methods of operation that have changed little over time (Stojkovic et al., 2008). In relation to the criminal justice administration, one may view traditional authority in the form of commanding power of a warden within a corrections system. The warden is the head of the hierarchy and operates simply in the way that a warden always has operated. In respect to traditional authority, things do not change because procedures are based on customs and merely continue as they always have. Weber s second type of influence is charismatic authority. Many teens that I have talked said the perfect car for them would be a car with a banging sound system, tinted windows, dubbs (20 in. rims), and a loud racing muffler. Here are a couple of cars that we think are very suitable for today s teen. The 1998 Volkswagen Beetle (Bug) is our top choice for a teen car. It s stylish, hip, and a little sporty looking. We choose the Bug because it s a new classic. This model s bug came standard with a 2.0 liter V4 engine giving out 115 horsepower making it at a top speed of 120 mph. This bug can hold 14.5 gallons of gas getting 22/27 mpg in the city/highway. It seats comfortable 4 small adults. This car was recommended by the IIHS as their Best Pick in 1998 for safety in its class. The Bug received a Good on the IIHS rating system. As a used car the 1998 Bug would probably run you close to $ 8,000. Are next car was the 1998 Toyota Corolla. It s sleek looking, with cool, crisp lines. Several researchers in the area of input modification have examined the effect of this technique on second language learner s comprehension (Oh, 2001; Brewer, 2008; Maxwell, 2011) and others investigate its effect not only on comprehension but also on vocabulary learning (Urano, 2000; Kim, 1996). Some studies showed that there was no significant difference in learning second language vocabularies between using reading elaborated text with unmodified texts (Chung, 1995; Kim; 1996; Silvia, 2000). Mosavi (2014) investigate the effect of explicit lexical elaboration on second language vocabulary learning in writing of 70 Iranian learners. Learners were randomly divided into two groups, both groups had the same reading text but for elaborated version target words had its synonyms or definitions right after them, for example, X has the same meaning as Y, which can be named as the most explicit elaboration device. A time limit was conducted for learners to read the text, in the elaborated group, learners were asked to pay attention to the target form while reading. When they finished the reading process they had to answer the reading comprehension questions and after that write a paragraph with the same topic with the reading comprehension text. This writing considers as the post test which learners do not have the permission for using dictionaries, peer help or teacher guidance. They just had the topic familiarity. • 43. Summary Of The Exegesis Of Rappaccini s Daughter Though the two previously analyzed parabolic short stories assist in showing Hawthorne s writing style and goals, the exegesis of his most convoluted and allegorical story, Rappaccini s Daughter, truly accomplishes this exposition of Hawthorne s work. In Padua, Italy, Giovanni Guasconti rents a room with a view of Dr. Rappaccini s garden. He meets professor Dr. Pietro Baglioni, who tells Giovanni that be must be cautious of Rappaccini since he is heartless and cares only about his scientific work. Giovanni notices Rappaccini s beautiful daughter, Beatrice, as falls in love. They meet with each other several times and Giovanni realizes he has become poisonous, as plants are dying in his hands. Baglioni reveals that Beatrice has grown up constantly exposed to poison and is poisonous herself, so he gives Giovanni a vial of medicine to give to Beatrice as a cure, but when she takes it she promptly dies. Literary critic Roy R. Male introduces the involved nature of the story and expresses, This complexity manifests itself first in the objects of the garden, the Eden of the present world (Male). Just like The Birthmark, Rappaccini s Daughter tells of death caused by human pride, but this is trivial. The allegorical nature of this story lies in its biblical connection. Rappaccini s garden symbolizes the garden of Eden and the story and its characters directly follow that of the creation of man, the creation of sin and the breakage of worldly perfection. Giovanni represents Adam, Beatrice is Eve, Rappaccini plays God and Baglioni acts as Satan. Giovanni and Beatrice are Adam and Eve since they are two innocent characters who fall victim to the deception and sinful malicious intent of Baglioni. Rappaccini is God because his primary role is to create and construct. Since Hawthorne makes an allegorical link to the Garden of Eden, the story can be perceived in the context of the New Testament. Assuming the reader comprehends Hawthorne s connection, they are then able to interpret a much more involved story with greater insight. Rappaccini s Daughter can be interpreted as a parable, but can also be seen as the more complex allegory that it is. Further, Hawthorne exposes a duality in evil through his allegory. Male ...
