Dual Diagnosis
Further Testing
However the willingness of doctor can have an immense impact when they are working with dual
diagnosis (Werner, 2012). Studies have shown that having preconceived attitudes can result in the
unknowing to work with certain individuals (Werner, 2012). In addition studies have that the biggest
factor of working with dual diagnosis is that of the willingness. In which the willingness plays a since
the interest in working with/helping individuals can be a factor (Werner, 2012). Additionally, a study
was conducted on 476 participants to determine if willingness and having a bias would be a
contributing factor (Werner, 2012). What the researchers discovered was three specific results

Studies have shown special education students who are dual diagnosis will be treated with insufficient
care (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). Nevertheless there is hope and it s called a visual aid (Jamie Knowlton,

are dual diagnosis are icons, comic strips, visual cues, choice boards and token boards for doing a
decent job (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). With seeing that students can be taught using visual aide a recent
study was conducted on the effectiveness of using visual aids (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). The recent
study was conducted on children who has been diagnosed with dual diagnose and show signs of
mental retardation (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). In the study there were three specific ideas that the
researchers where able to concluded (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). The first result was that it was
discovered that visual cues do indeed help immensely when they are being involved in helping
students (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). The second result was that in addition to visual cues the visual
schedules, rating scale and comic strips were all helpful with special educated individuals with dual
diagnosis (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). And the last result from the study was that when a student
becomes more satisfied the more they would need to push their selves to the next level (Jamie

Comparing Of Mice And Men And What s Eating Gilbert Grape
What s Eating Gilbert Grape Dir. Lasse Hallstrom and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are two
very similar pieces of storytelling about caring for the misfortunate. In Of Mice and Men George cares
for his mentally challenged friend Lennie, and in, What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert takes care of
his mentally disabled brother Arnie. Both George and Gilbert care more for the well being and defence
of their loved one, than they do for their own well being in most cases. In the end of What s Eating
Gilbert Grape, Gilbert s mother dies; in a dramatic and tangible gesture to rid himself of his past,
Gilbert burns their house down. In a symbolic similarity, at the end of Of Mice and Men George kills
Lennie in an effort to release him of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George kills Lennie not because he doesn t like Lennie but because he s tired of dealing with him, and
he wants to be able to start over and have a good life, and he knows he can t if Lennie is around.
George is always saying how he wants him and Lennie to live on a farm but is always doubting if
Lennie can stay on track, and he is always wondering if Lennie is gonna mess up their chances.
Comparably Gilbert s decision to burn down his house is his way of proclaiming his starting over, and
symbolically saying that nothing good ever came of that house and that nothing ever would. Gilbert is
talking to Becky and is saying how much he hates living in his house and that he hates how lazy and
fat his mom is. This is more obvious for Gilbert because throughout the whole movie he is completely
selfless and only cares about taking care of his family. Both of their decisions were very important to
show that they were finally taking control of their lives, and that they decided to finally do something
for themselves. Unfortunately in order to do this both characters looked to destructive and violent
ways of freeing themselves. Perhaps these burdens were so great that they had to take destructive
measures to alleviate themselves from them, or perhaps they simply never learned another away and
had to take extreme measure to enact any change in their

Essay On Physics Of Complex Systems
One of the flourishing and fascinating research areas in physics nowadays is the physics of complex
systems, or the theory of complexity. There is not a single and straightforward meaning associated
with this buzzword due to its vagueness and polysemy, and very often it depends on the context and
the authors. Nevertheless, one of the interesting points are the tools and methods that the theory
provides that can be eventually applied to many different disciplines, ranging from physics, chemistry,
biology, applied sciences and even social sciences.
The main idea of complexity that the author uses in the present monograph stems from the nonlinear
interaction of the individual parts of a dynamical system and the different sizes of large ... Show more

Most of the problems to which the author refers to constitute very recent research problems in the field
of space plasma, and the book contains at the end a very rich list of important references on the field,
that the author uses along the whole book.
The book is very well edited and it contains seven chapters, where key aspects of complexity theory
applied to space plasmas are discussed. It starts with an excellent introduction where the objectives of
the book are clearly outlined, and basically the rest of the chapters are devoted to either give the
terminology that it will be used in the next chapters, or to describe methods and different applications.
A second chapter deals extensively with the idea of dynamical criticality far from equilibrium. The
theory of self organized criticality is introduced and applied to different examples. Interestingly, this
theory helped to recognize the power law behaviour of the solar flares. Next, under the title of physics
of complexity, the author describes coherent structures and explores the physical reasons of the origin
of complexity in space plasmas. The next chapters deal with other techniques such as probability
distributions, wavelets, fractals, multifractal analysis, ending with a final chapter on the dynamical
renormalization group and its connection with criticality and multifractals. The phenomenon of
intermittency and fluid turbulence using these techniques are also discussed. Including such topics as

Why Did The American Colonists Have Their Rights Essay
Great Britain operated colonies in America for over 150 years. Throughout this time period, the
colonists governed themselves fairly and justly with little interference from Great Britain. Then,
British government jumped in and suddenly started treating the colonists as a lesser people. Why did
the American colonist have the rights of Englishmen? The American colonists had the rights of
Englishmen because they were subjects of the British rule, and all subjects of the king or queen lived
their rights as Englishmen. Even though the colonists were natives of Great Britain, which should
have given them equal rights of the British, their rights were violated. The colonist s family and
friends, who had just arrived from Great Britain felt as if they were stripped of their rights and treated
as rebels. What ideas did colonists in America use when they formed their own governments? When
forming their own government the colonists had many ideas, for example Natural Rights and Rule of
Law, which were based off of different, well developed governments. The colonist s base of
government was a representative government where the people choose their representatives. They also
used the valuable ideas from the British documents. Then, the Founders divided the power into three
branches of government to make sure that no one person could have ... Show more content on

these acts was the Sugar Act of 1764. The purpose of the law was to stop the smuggling of goods in

The Brain Of The Medical Field Is An Innovative World Of...
The Brain s Guide to Survival
The medical field is an innovative world of experimentation and discoveries. As new discoveries
continue to happen, new solutions are created for existing problem. However, there are many
situations where there is no known solution. When something like this occurs, scientists work to use
hypotheses, evidence, and science to find a new solution. After this, testing must be done to discover if
what they came up with is safe and effective. There are some who find the process to be unethical.
These people may worry about the safety of those being tested on. While there are many debates on
the ethicality of human testing to further research on the brain, whenever standards and set procedures
are put into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main concerns presented is that if a person is suffering from an abnormal problem, then
their judgement is most likely impaired or biased (Ford 73 82). Diseases can also contribute to
impaired thinking. For example, in chapter seven of the book, The Patient s Brain: The Neuroscience
Behind the Doctor Patient Relationship by Fabrizio Benedetti, explains how someone with dementia
may not go through key things that an average sick person experiences: feeling sick, seeking a
solution, meeting with a therapist, or going through therapy. With diseases like dementia pain,
understanding, and goals may be completely different then the majority of diseases (Benedetti 328).
Therefore, patients like this may not to be able to see the risk in a potential remedy. In order to safely
test out new discoveries, there must be a way for the patient to understand what could happen to them.
Without understanding, there can never be true safety. Patients must be able to comprehend a
procedure in order to decide if they would like to participate in it. Ethicists find the problem of
impaired judgement to be especially concerning. If the patient s judgement is impaired, then the
patient is unable to make a clear decision on if they are okay with the potential risks, and if they
understand the process of the problem and

Abstract
We will discuss in this paper the data warehousing and the online processing of data. We will describe
the best ways to manage the data and the difficulties that you could face. Also we will talk about how
can we solve or reduce these difficulties.
Database Management Systems (DBMS)
Database Management Systems (DBMS) maximize:
● Data security
● Data integrity
● Data independence
Data Warehousing
Data warehousing is a powerful business intelligence tool for maximizing the organization s
investment in the information technology. It is can be describe as a collection of decision support
technologies, maid to allow executive, manager, and analyst, to make faster decisions.
IT managers need to learn and implement data warehousing because it is very powerful tool provides
storage, functionality and responsiveness to queries beyond the capabilities of today s databases. It
also improves the data access performance. Since it is very rare today to remove the data because most
users have only read access also rapid access to a larger volume of data which could be inconvenient
sometimes.
Software and systems support started to design systems to support decision makers as online

Paracas Candelabra Research Paper
Around 200 BC, according to carbon dated pottery found on the Paracas Peninsula at Pisco Bay in
Peru, a mysterious image, called the Paracas Candelabra or Candelabra of the Andes, was made in the
sand surrounded by large stones. It is 600 feet tall, 2 feet deep and resembles the image of candelabra.
The symbol can be seen as far as 12 miles out to sea. There are many rumors as to what this symbol
represented whether it be religious, a sailing navigation tool, a huge seismograph or even that it could
be referencing a certain hallucinogenic plant. The first suggestion of what the Paracas Candelabra
could be was related to religious ideas. In South America, a god named Viracocha, who was the
creator god in Incan mythology and who was highly worshipped. The people who worshipped the god
believe the image to be that of the lightening rod or staff carried by Viracocha. The also believed that
Viracocha would help people during times of trouble and the people of Paracas created the image to
help him find his way to them. Another religious idea came about by the Conquistadors who believed
that the image was actually representing the Holy Trinity. They took this symbol to be a sign that they
should continue their quest to Christianize any of the locals that they could find. ... Show more content

could have carved the image into the sand. But some are still skeptical as to why that certain image

Steps Principles Into Account, Our Investment
Taking these guiding principles into account, our investment framework for Buy and Maintain is built
on the following five key rules: 1. Avoid using public benchmarks for beta management
2. Use asset liability management to guide asset allocation decisions 3. Focus on independent credit
analysis when building portfolios and buying securities
4. Ensure fundamental credit views drive sell decisions
5. Measure performance based on initial portfolio economics and credit migration
1. Avoid using public benchmarks for beta management Buy and Maintain strategies will perform
well, provided investors have exposure to the correct assets. However, many Buy and
Maintain portfolios do not have an optimal asset mix because insurers tend to focus on public
benchmark weightings when constructing portfolios. Public benchmarks have at least four major
disadvantages when it comes to constructing Buy and
Maintain portfolios:
Duration mismatch
A typical portfolio based on a public benchmark tends to hold duration within a narrow band closely
linked to the duration of the benchmark itself. This gives the fund manager very little flexibility to
manage the duration of a Buy and Maintain portfolio so that it matches an investor s individual cash
flow profile.
The duration mismatch between the benchmark and, in the case of the insurance investor, the
liabilities, can be a magnitude of 10 or more years (see Exhibit 2).
Concentration risk
Because public benchmarks tend to be market capitalization

Indonesia And Its Impact On Malaysia
Malaysia was nearly always in favor of close economic co operation among Southeast Asian
countries; however, this was impacted often by different nationalistic sentiments in Indonesia, rarely
ones coming from Malaysia. Although tensions and separation have increased, Malays are much more
likely to view Indonesians as a part of their nation than Indonesians are to view Malaysians as part of
their nation. There are likely a variety of reasons contributing to this. Most importantly, Indonesia is a
significantly larger country than Malaysia, with about 250 million people, while Malaysia only has
about 30 million people, of whom only approximately half are ethnic Malays and 12% from other
Bumiputera (native Malay) populations. Furthermore, while Indonesia does have some non pribumi
(native Indonesian) populations, such as the Chinese Indonesians and Arab Indonesians, these
numbers are significantly smaller than those in Malaysia, where the Chinese population makes up over
22% of the country and the Indian population makes up about 7%. There are also significantly more
non citizens in Malaysia than there are in Indonesia, contributing to more questions of identity.
There is already significant research on nationalism in Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as

A Plea For Emigration By Mary Ann Shadd
Mary Ann Shadd s A Plea for Emigration was a pamphlet that was written for African Americans who
may be interested in emigrating to Canada. By examining all the different parts of the country, such as
climate and labour, Shadd paints a very positive overview of Canada. It s a very simple read and I was
able to get through it without any issues. However, as I read it, I was quite concerned with how it was
written. It was a very biased opinion of Canada and Shadd was constantly overselling the country to
convince people to emigrate to Canada. She only addresses any concerns for the sheer purpose of just
reassuring the reader and pushing it to the side. As a result, it grossly undermines the hardships that an
immigrant may face, especially for African individuals. As this was written in 1852, racism was still
rampant within North America and even though Canada had an anti slavery legislation, that does not
dismiss the discrimination that Black citizens would face. Furthermore, moving to a new country and
rebuilding a life there isn t as simple as Shadd portrays, especially during this time period. With only
manual hard labour as job opportunities and being forced to survive out in the wilderness, this is a life
that isn t suited for everyone. Shadd attempts to convince the readers that the hard work is worth it,
but she does a very shallow job of doing so as she neglects to mention any of these difficulties. Her
proposition only appear strong because she doesn t choose to

A Interview With My Grandmother
I enjoyed reading your interview with your Grandmother, she sounds so much like my Grandmother.
How she grew up also sounds a lot like how I grew up, just different times. We didn t have a lot of
money but we were happy. My Mother worked her whole life and still works today, she had lots of
trouble raising four children until she met my Dad who adopted us. I remember we were getting
canned food delivered to our trailer at one point before she met my Dad. It all changed when my Dad
found my Mom and married her and took on all four of us. For some reason, I couldn t help but to
remember making mud pies and building forts in our yard. That was one thing we did have was a huge
back yard with a fence, so we would pretend the yard was our ocean full of sharks. We would climb
around the fence and if we fell, we got eaten by the sharks. For some reason this interview made me
think of those great memories. Miyoko has a very tough situation to face. She basically has to decide
to do what makes her happy or what her parents and family want her to do. Miyoko needs to
understand that she needs to make this decision for herself because she is the one that has to deal with
the life decisions she makes. The first recommendation for her is to make a list of all the pros and cons

Industrialism In Upton Sinclair s The Jungle, By Upton...
Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle in the hope that not only Americans would find themselves reading
about the dark sides of the common industrial factories, but also people in other countries as well
would see that life for the working class American that had to work in the industrial industry,
specifically as seen in Sinclair s writing the meat packing industry was a dirty, and dangerous job for
workers all caused by the hands of companies that didn t care about their employees. In the American
Experience book it gives a chapter from the book The Jungle, called Living and Dying in Packington,
Chicago Sinclair writes about the life of an immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus with glimpses of others in
his community and their lives working in factories.
The main points of Sinclair s work even from this small section of the whole writing is very heavy
hitting along with at the time of publication probably was seen as controversial, it was a new type of
writing a story that unfortunately this story was not made up, Sinclair used his experiences living in
the workers ghettos of Packington, studying the people, and meatpacking industry (pg. 72). Sinclair
argues that the companies and their factories are ruining the workers way of life, physically and
mentally, leading to the idea of capitalism and companies becoming so obsessed with how fast can a
product be made then the quality of the product and well being for the employee (pg.72).
Physically these factories hurt their workers as

Could A Machine Be Conscious
1 Could a machine be conscious? This question is often dismissed as simple by those that would say
yes in response. The usual claim made by the pro camp is that man is a biological machine and is
conscious, ergo, a machine is conscious. If we, humans, are truly biological machines and we are at
the same time conscious then I would agree that yes, categorically, a machine could be conscious. But
is it really that simple? I contend that it is a more difficult problem but not that it is a complicated one,
merely one of ambiguity which, once resolved, leads the contemplator to the same conclusion as I do
that in fact, no, a machine could not be conscious. I propose that those who argue the yes case that a
machine can be conscious are, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are all actions definable in their own right, which, I contend need not be sub categories of, or
allocated to the definition of consciousness and, unlike the hard problem of consciousness which we
will come to shortly, they can be explained by science in a physical context and therefore be
impersonated by machinery. They have physical qualities which are an important distinction in the 3
concept of Artificial Intelligence which claims the ability of machines to achieve consciousness,
arising in theory out of intelligence. The most prominent example of the concept of a machine being
intelligent in the manner of this so called consciousness is the Turing test (Turing, 1950) which, rather
tellingly, was originally called the Imitation Game . The test was designed to see if a machine could
fool a human into thinking it was itself another human, and although somewhat successful with Eliza
(Weizenbaum 1976), the premise was quickly, and I opine correctly, attacked by Searle (1980:417 57)
in his Chinese Room thought experiment, proving that a machine can simulate communication
without understanding and is therefore not thinking in the way humans, or perhaps other living things
do. Humans exhibit the ability to pass tests without understanding the material and, I contend, this is
what a machine simulates, the function of memory, not intelligence. Even if it could fool a

Nsa Is The Spying Ofu.s Citizens
The National Security Agency (NSA) has been an information gathering arm of the Executive branch
since the Cold War and continues to be an essential part of ensuring the security of the United States.
The public issue that involves the NSA is the spying of U.S citizens which can be seen as a violation
of the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution. This was revealed to the public by the
whistleblower Edward Snowden who released classified documents of activities that the NSA had
been conducting in conjuncture with telecommunication companies, which angered many U.S citizens
and received media coverage with a call for the U.S Government to restrict the NSA s activities or at
least for there to be Congressional oversight. This debate revolves around how much the NSA s
surveillance activities are actually used for national security as well as the constitutionality of the NSA
s surveillance. This all began after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 when there was a call
for the attacks to never happen again and the adoption of the Patriot Act in that same year which
increased the power of the NSA.
The National Security Agency over the past few years was revealed to have spied on American
citizens under what can be considered illegal or unconstitutional circumstances which sparked concern
and outrage across most of America. This was first recognized in 2013 when the whistleblower
Edward Snowden or traitor as the United States government considers him, leaked

Reducing Public Services
Yet another set of cuts is now foreseen to our beleaguered local service, just days after announcements
were made regarding consultations on reducing children s services, school buses and, well, just about
anything you can think of which serves the public basically.
This time the council is proposing reviewing the timetables of a number of bus services in and around
Witney, but also other rural areas of the County. I can t comment on services in other neighbourhoods,
but our 18 and 19 routes are for many people a lifeline. For the elderly, unemployed, disabled and
youths buses are the one and only form of transport available to them to get them into the main
business centres of Witney and Oxford.
The council is proposing reducing these services from hourly to two hourly. If you have opened the
consultation papers online you would have noticed that this would save the council at most under
£200,000 a sum which is insignificant in the annual transport budget of just over £53 million, but one
with severe repercussions for many.
The view of the Green Party is simple. We can t justify the existence of public services just on the
basis of a crude income and expenditure analysis. In the instance of transport a proper cost benefit
analysis should take into account matters such as benefit to the environment, sustainability and overall
services distribution. In this context reducing buses in rural areas would clearly make no sense
whatsoever.

Examples Of Rebellion In Animal Farm By George Orwell
Rebellion, especially in a community, is when insurgence takes place. It is usually done to create a
change and heighten a community. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, rebellion shows itself
through strong idealism, word of mouth(snout), and other communities belief systems.
Old Major has an groundbreaking idea that he thinks will give the animals freedom and the animals
like the idea. Old Major says, Rebellion! I do not know when that Rebellion will come, it might be in
a week or in a hundred years, but I know, as surely as I see this straw beneath my feet, that sooner or
later justice will be done. Fix your eyes on that, comrades, throughout the short remainder of your
lives! And above all, pass on this message of mine to those who come after you, so that future
generations shall carry on the struggle until it is victorious, (Chapter 1). Old Major means that the
animals should think of rebellion throughout their life. The animals believe Old Major, and they ...

the animals ultimate demise. Again Orwell writes, Rumours of a wonderful farm, where the human

Van Gogh created more than 43 self portraits between 1885 and 1889.[231][note 13] They were
usually completed in series, such as those painted in Paris in mid 1887, and continued until shortly
before his death.[232] Generally the portraits were studies, created during introspective periods when
he was reluctant to mix with others, or when he lacked models, and so painted himself.[222][233] The
self portraits reflect a degree of self scrutiny that, according to Hughes, is seldom if ever apparent in
an artist.[234] Often they mark important periods in his development, for example in the mid 1887
Paris series, where he became influenced by Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne and Signac.[235] In Self

1. Critically evaluate the competitive advantage that can be gained by companies through IS/IT
outsourcing. Provide suitable example to support your answer.
The competitive advantage is the favorable position an organization seeks in order to be more
profitable than its competitors. Competitive advantage involves communicating a greater perceived
value to a target market than its competitors can provide. This can be achieved through many avenues
including offering a better quality product or service, lowering prices and increasing marketing efforts.
Sustainable competitive advantage refers to maintaining a favorable position over the long term,
which can help boost a company s image in the marketplace, its valuation and its future earning
potential. (Margaret Rouse, November 2012).
The outsourcing is when businesses need expertise or skills that they don t have within their

Homosexuality Is A Way Of Living Life
Homosexuality is one the most controversial topics societies have faced and continue to face. The
beliefs of many people around the world about the nature of homosexuality, go into two patterns
called choice and gene. Is homosexuality a choice or a gene? Are we born the way we are? Or are we
shaped by the environmental factors while we grow up? The origin of homosexuality has been
discussed intensively around the world. Gay is a sexual orientation, but the fact of acting on it is a
choice. However, every person has their own views regarding this concept throughout time. Some
people believe that homosexuality is a way of living life that people choose. On the other hand, some
say that homosexuality is a gene or even worse a disease. The hypotheses that homosexuality is a
disease that can and need to be cured has been supported by multiple people around the world.
Throughout history, research, doctors and philosophers have spent time debating about the origin of
homosexuality. Edmund Bergler was one of them, an Austrian born American psychoanalyst whose
book covered such topics as childhood development, mid life crises and human behavior in general.
He was the most important theorist of homosexuality in the 1950s. In 1951, Bergler wrote
Homosexuality: Disease or Way of life to deeply explore the origin of homosexuality. In the book, he
argues that homosexuality is a disease and not a choice, an argument that I do not accept. According to
him, homosexuals are a small

With the busy lifestyles we have today, juggling parenting, working, and school can be overwhelming
so having the structure of a traditional setting may work best. For some, they may prefer this
organized method. Social interaction is a factor in traditional learning as well. A student would always
have face to face interaction with his/her classmates as well as with the instructors. Some students
would prefer the more instant feedback and expressions as well as to read body language of those they
are interacting with. They would have hands on experiences and learning available to him/her. This
learning environment would also provide extracurricular activities such as, sporting events and book
fairs. For most, this way has been our only type of experience with education and for some students; a
deviation from this method of learning can cause anxiety, fear, and frustration. Obviously someone
who does not adapt to change easily should probably stick with the traditional education. On the other
hand, disadvantages some may see with traditional education would be cost and flexibility. With
traditional education a student could easily endure more expenses such as, cost of transportation for
gas to and from school, bus passes, or parking passes. Furthermore, the cost of on campus housing, or
food could be a very costly expense. When living on campus, students tend to eat out a great deal and

Summary Of The Poem What A Jerk
What a jerk? That s him pushing the stone up the hill, the jerk (34 37): Seems like Mrs. Sisyphus,
throughout the poem, is attempting to rule out her workaholic husband of any chance to explain
himself or tell his side of the story on why he works a lot. The reader may even argue that there may
be some valid complaints that she states but she s not all that sympathetic. There s this sense of
complete hatred for her husband as if he s really a horrendous person, but in reality she s alone and
hurt rather than angry. Throughout the poem, she comes across as very evil, diabolical, but in a softer
sense. Her words don t seem to stick since they re more of a soft insult rather than harsh and rough, as
if a little girl did not get the candy she wants so she s ignoring her mother for not buying her it, but she
s calling her mean and all this in the moment, but then gets sad because she didn t get that piece of
candy. If you take a look at the beginning stanzas of the poem, she says in her own words, I call it a
stone it s nearer the size of a kirk. When he first started out, it just used to irk, but now its incenses me,
and him, the absolute berk. I could do something vicious to him with a dirk. (2 5). When reading this
poem, the first thing you may realize is that this poem is written as a dramatic monologue, which is a
literary technique used to speak to some kind of non present listener, and she puts this story together
in a dramatic and shocking sort of way as if she

Adrienne Rich Education Rich Analysis
Poet Adrienne Rich gave an inspiring speech during a convocation at Douglass College in 1977. Even
though this was quite a few decades ago, her words are still relevant today. Education is still not taken
as seriously as it should be and this is disappointing because it is the most important tool that leads to

Most students take a passive approach to their education. In other words, they do the bare minimum

numerous clubs and organizations. I also worked 3 4 shifts a week as a waitress from my sophomore
to senior year. I started out taking all honors/AP classes my freshman year but the more clubs and
activities I became involved in, the less advanced classes I was taking. I did not take advantage of the
free education I was given and I didn t realize how big of a deal it was that I was offered college
classes in high school. I was more than capable of taking the higher level classes, but I was just too
lazy. I regret the decisions I made and I always encourage my family and friends that are still in grade
school to take all of the classes they can because it will pay off. I did not have anyone encouraging me
to go the extra mile so I simply just didn t. I have always been surrounded by people that believe that
men are superior to women,

Maus by Art Spiegelman Essay
Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic
is composed of symbols to express concepts shared by all people in their own social environment, and
provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention.
Comics exist to expose the ethnic representations that seek to control the development of collective
perceptions, memories and emotions and especially fear by investigating the techniques through which
this control is maintained. Maus I is a true account of a Holocaust survivor, Vladek Spiegelman, and
his experiences as a young Jew during the horrors leading up to the confinement in Auschwitz. Maus
II is about Vladek recounting his own history to his son Art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the Holocaust.
He uses real features of human beings such as hands, feet and emotions to give the animals the full
potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being seen in sharper
relief as human concerns in the world of mice. Spiegelman decided on interesting but possibly
offensive use of different animals to use. The first type of animal which appears in this comic is the
mouse (MausI:5). The form of mice is used to represent the Jewish people during the Holocaust and as
of now too. The Polish police were involved in the arrest of innocent Jewish mice (27). The Polish
people were pigs and Germans were represented as cats. The Germans appearance as cats began to
make sense in the way how cats chase, hunt and kill mice (33). This comic book was translated into an
easily readable format to educate the history of the Holocaust to the younger generations.
Second, the choice of a comic format serves as a vital aspect in the reader s understanding of the
visual society and making awareness through generations as more attuned to the image than to the
word. In Vladek s world, being and living as a human meant living in fear. Vladek escapes the fear of
death for a time through the intercession of an S.S. officer who wanted to learn English from him and
in return provided him with some protection (78). This

A Look at the Final Chapter of Timothy Glander’s Book,...
The final chapter of Timothy Glander s book, Origins of Mass Communications Research During the
American Cold War: Educational Effects and Contemporary Implications (2000) stands as a
disappointing example of academic research becoming hijacked by the author s personal opinion.
Focusing on the hidden nature of propaganda in American life, his concluding chapter presents a very
drastic view of the individuals who crafted the academic subject now known as mass communications.
I see the need for investigating the status quo, for digging into the motivations behind the images and
data churned out in the mass media, and for questioning the trivia facts that become common
knowledge. For that reason, I am wary of completely discrediting the ... Show more content on

Circling any solid thesis, he claims that generations of Americans have been brainwashed by mass
communications, ruining any genuine community life (2000, p. 214), a vague picture of the pre Cold
War era that never becomes defined. The Cold War era may have featured significant changes in the
way American communities functioned, but summoning up a sitcom image instead of genuine
examples to support one of his key arguments simply weakens his case. His one clearly stated goal is
to revive the association of the phrase mass communications with the word propaganda a word that
appears thirty times in these fourteen pages.
Making the unfortunate choice of attempting to eliminate detractors of his claim without addressing
their concerns, Glander frames them as being lost in the propaganda of their time. His claim, people
still remain largely unable to...understand the powerful ways in which [television] is used to shape and
control their thinking (2000, p. 207) means every generation since the Cold War is so permeated by
mass communications that they are now incapable of external analysis. Using this logic, critics of his
argument are brainwashed by this new establishment, a victim of social control that they cannot see or
change, leaving us in a vicious circle at the mercy of the media.
Two accompanying book reviews echo my concerns with this logic. Found in History of Education
Quarterly (2001) and

Dimmesdale Symbolism In Scarlet Letter
Symbolism in a character portrays the true meaning behind that individual and gives the reader a
better understanding of the novel as a whole. Dimmesdale is very well known to the people of the
Puritan town in Boston. In this book, he proves to everyone that he is a true sinner, but not a well
known sinner. He kept this secret of adultery from everyone in the town; it showed that he is a secret
sinner. Dimmesdale symbolizes weakness and self centered intellectualism; he understands what is
right, but doesn t have the courage to confess his sins to the town. The main reason the people of the
town love Dimmesdale is because he hasn t told them his sins. He accepts that once he does reveal
what he did wrong, the citizens will treat him awfully. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dimmesdale as an individual and through his secret actions symbolize how self centered and
egotistical he is. Both Dimmesdale and Hester committed adultery, but Hester was the one who got all
the hatred and disrespect from everyone in the Puritan town. She went through some awful situations
with the scarlet letter, and it changed her so much. While she was going through all this pain,
Dimmesdale was hiding his sins. This was a selfish act by Dimmesdale towards Hester and Pearl, but
not admitting the sin bit him right in the butt. He was torturing himself and receiving physical pain in
various ways; he whipped himself, stared at the mirror for periods of time, and starved himself. Even
though he didn t reveal his sin to the public, his heart was still making itself guilty of such secrets
(127). He felt very guilty for the agony that Hester has been through. She has experienced hatred from
herself mentally and from the Puritan people verbally. He didn t want the people to treat him like they
treated Hester; he loves how he gets respect from the townspeople. The only pain he has received was
from himself mentally and physically, but not verbal and emotional pain like Hester. He doesn t want
to experience those dreadful moments that she had gone through. This action proves to the readers
how Arthur Dimmesdale symbolizes self centered

Gateway Marketing Case Study
Executive Summary
Gateway computers was incorporated in the year 1985 and gained high popularity amongst the target
audiences ever since then. The organization has always promised high technology to the customers
and maximum value to the stakeholders (Azad, 2011). Gateway has been highly recognized as one of
the first organizations to sell the computers online apart from its brick and mortar retail stores. This
has also helped the organization to gain a competitive advantage in the market. With the intensifying
competition, Gateway 2000 had to shift to the contemporary means of communication and hence
started advertising for its products aggressively (Sharma, 2012). The organization started with the
print advertisements that were designed by the in house team. However, the organization soon realized
the need of an outhouse expert agency and hence hired Carmichael Lynch for creating a marketing
campaign. In the year 1993, the company hired the global advertising agency D Arcy Masius Benton
Bowles to ensure that the marketing communications get the maximum reach and coverage (Fill,
2002). The change in marketing communications has created a lot of confusion and hence this paper
proposes a situational analysis for the company along with some recommendations for the better
management in the future. Also, a contingency plan has been advised during the course of this
research to ensure that the organization is competent with its strategic advertising management.

What Role Did Womens Soccer Play In The 1930 s
Women s football or more commonly known as women s soccer. Women played organized soccer in
Europe as far back as the 1930 s, however in the United States women didn t start till the 1970 s. It
was until 1995 that the first women s league was launched, and it was not until 2001 that the women
team made its debut. When women s soccer finally took off in the United States, it was fueled by an
extreme number of youth players. Now day s soccer is a very popular sport played both in recreational
level, and professional. Soccer is played by kicking the ball into the opposing teams net. Goalkeepers,
such as Hope Solo, block the ball from entering the goal. Goalkeepers are the only ones who can use
their hands. Julia Johnston, a defender,

Brave New World States Research Paper
Home of the Brave America has long promised a life of ease for all citizens. Today, our technological
and scientific developments keep thousands of people, if not happy, then comfortable.
Correspondingly, the inhabitants of the World State portrayed in Aldous Huxley s Brave New World
live entirely content lifestyles due to their technological and scientific advances. Both the World State
and modern American societies share a common background, and while Huxley s futuristic world may
have advanced farther than our society has, America is continually developing into a Brave New
World. Parallels of the two worlds exist in abundance within the novel, perhaps the most obvious
examples of which lie in the desire to retain youth and the use of drugs in both societies. World State
citizens never grow old, at least not on the surface. Huxley explains how his characters . . .keep their
internal secretions artificially balanced at a youthful equilibrium (111). The process described allows
Huxley s characters to continue to look young as their bodies grow old. Subsequently, a thirty year old
character appears the same as a sixty year old character, their skin having never wrinkled or sagged.
However, the retaining of youth does not suppress the internal effects of aging, the sixty year ... Show

Huxley s imaginative examples of how we prioritize superficial desires illustrate to the audience that
our society needs to care more about our lives and the lives of those around us, instead of looks and
drugs. For years we have used our technological and scientific improvements for our shallow desires,
not for the health of our society. The parallels between Huxley s society and ours exist because his
brave new world represents an exaggerated version of our world, he meant his novel to display the
faults of sophisticated

With seeing that students can be taught using visual aide a recent study was conducted on the effectiveness of using visual aids (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). The recent study was conducted on children who has been diagnosed with dual diagnose and show signs of mental retardation (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). In the study there were three specific ideas that the researchers where able to concluded (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). The first result was that it was discovered that visual cues do indeed help immensely when they are being involved in helping students (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). The second result was that in addition to visual cues the visual schedules, rating scale and comic strips were all helpful with special educated individuals with dual diagnosis (Jamie Knowlton, 2007). • 3. Comparing Of Mice And Men And What s Eating Gilbert Grape What s Eating Gilbert Grape Dir. Lasse Hallstrom and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are two very similar pieces of storytelling about caring for the misfortunate. In Of Mice and Men George cares for his mentally challenged friend Lennie, and in, What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert takes care of his mentally disabled brother Arnie. Both George and Gilbert care more for the well being and defence of their loved one, than they do for their own well being in most cases. In the end of What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert s mother dies; in a dramatic and tangible gesture to rid himself of his past, Gilbert burns their house down. George is always saying how he wants him and Lennie to live on a farm but is always doubting if Lennie can stay on track, and he is always wondering if Lennie is gonna mess up their chances. Comparably Gilbert s decision to burn down his house is his way of proclaiming his starting over, and symbolically saying that nothing good ever came of that house and that nothing ever would. Gilbert is talking to Becky and is saying how much he hates living in his house and that he hates how lazy and fat his mom is. This is more obvious for Gilbert because throughout the whole movie he is completely selfless and only cares about taking care of his family. Both of their decisions were very important to show that they were finally taking control of their lives, and that they decided to finally do something for themselves. Unfortunately in order to do this both characters looked to destructive and violent ways of freeing themselves. Perhaps these burdens were so great that they had to take destructive measures to alleviate themselves from them, or perhaps they simply never learned another away and had to take extreme measure to enact any change in their ... • 4. Essay On Physics Of Complex Systems One of the flourishing and fascinating research areas in physics nowadays is the physics of complex systems, or the theory of complexity. There is not a single and straightforward meaning associated with this buzzword due to its vagueness and polysemy, and very often it depends on the context and the authors. Nevertheless, one of the interesting points are the tools and methods that the theory provides that can be eventually applied to many different disciplines, ranging from physics, chemistry, biology, applied sciences and even social sciences. The main idea of complexity that the author uses in the present monograph stems from the nonlinear interaction of the individual parts of a dynamical system and the different sizes of large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the problems to which the author refers to constitute very recent research problems in the field of space plasma, and the book contains at the end a very rich list of important references on the field, that the author uses along the whole book. The book is very well edited and it contains seven chapters, where key aspects of complexity theory applied to space plasmas are discussed. It starts with an excellent introduction where the objectives of the book are clearly outlined, and basically the rest of the chapters are devoted to either give the terminology that it will be used in the next chapters, or to describe methods and different applications. A second chapter deals extensively with the idea of dynamical criticality far from equilibrium. The theory of self organized criticality is introduced and applied to different examples. Interestingly, this theory helped to recognize the power law behaviour of the solar flares. Next, under the title of physics of complexity, the author describes coherent structures and explores the physical reasons of the origin of complexity in space plasmas. The next chapters deal with other techniques such as probability distributions, wavelets, fractals, multifractal analysis, ending with a final chapter on the dynamical renormalization group and its connection with criticality and multifractals. The phenomenon of intermittency and fluid turbulence using these techniques are also discussed. Including such topics as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Why Did The American Colonists Have Their Rights Essay Great Britain operated colonies in America for over 150 years. Throughout this time period, the colonists governed themselves fairly and justly with little interference from Great Britain. Then, British government jumped in and suddenly started treating the colonists as a lesser people. Why did the American colonist have the rights of Englishmen? The American colonists had the rights of Englishmen because they were subjects of the British rule, and all subjects of the king or queen lived their rights as Englishmen. Even though the colonists were natives of Great Britain, which should have given them equal rights of the British, their rights were violated. The colonist s family and friends, who had just arrived from Great Britain felt as if they were stripped of their rights and treated as rebels. What ideas did colonists in America use when they formed their own governments? When forming their own government the colonists had many ideas, for example Natural Rights and Rule of Law, which were based off of different, well developed governments. The colonist s base of government was a representative government where the people choose their representatives. They also used the valuable ideas from the British documents. With diseases like dementia pain, understanding, and goals may be completely different then the majority of diseases (Benedetti 328). Therefore, patients like this may not to be able to see the risk in a potential remedy. In order to safely test out new discoveries, there must be a way for the patient to understand what could happen to them. Without understanding, there can never be true safety. Patients must be able to comprehend a procedure in order to decide if they would like to participate in it. Ethicists find the problem of impaired judgement to be especially concerning. Paracas Candelabra Research Paper Around 200 BC, according to carbon dated pottery found on the Paracas Peninsula at Pisco Bay in Peru, a mysterious image, called the Paracas Candelabra or Candelabra of the Andes, was made in the sand surrounded by large stones. It is 600 feet tall, 2 feet deep and resembles the image of candelabra. The symbol can be seen as far as 12 miles out to sea. There are many rumors as to what this symbol represented whether it be religious, a sailing navigation tool, a huge seismograph or even that it could be referencing a certain hallucinogenic plant. The first suggestion of what the Paracas Candelabra could be was related to religious ideas. In South America, a god named Viracocha, who was the creator god in Incan mythology and who was highly worshipped. The people who worshipped the god believe the image to be that of the lightening rod or staff carried by Viracocha. The also believed that Viracocha would help people during times of trouble and the people of Paracas created the image to help him find his way to them. • 15. Steps Principles Into Account, Our Investment Taking these guiding principles into account, our investment framework for Buy and Maintain is built on the following five key rules: 1. Avoid using public benchmarks for beta management 2. Use asset liability management to guide asset allocation decisions 3. Focus on independent credit analysis when building portfolios and buying securities 4. Ensure fundamental credit views drive sell decisions 5. Measure performance based on initial portfolio economics and credit migration 1. Avoid using public benchmarks for beta management Buy and Maintain strategies will perform well, provided investors have exposure to the correct assets. However, many Buy and Maintain portfolios do not have an optimal asset mix because insurers tend to focus on public benchmark weightings when constructing portfolios. Public benchmarks have at least four major disadvantages when it comes to constructing Buy and Maintain portfolios: Duration mismatch A typical portfolio based on a public benchmark tends to hold duration within a narrow band closely linked to the duration of the benchmark itself. This gives the fund manager very little flexibility to manage the duration of a Buy and Maintain portfolio so that it matches an investor s individual cash flow profile. The duration mismatch between the benchmark and, in the case of the insurance investor, the liabilities, can be a magnitude of 10 or more years (see Exhibit 2). Concentration risk Because public benchmarks tend to be market capitalization ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Indonesia And Its Impact On Malaysia Malaysia was nearly always in favor of close economic co operation among Southeast Asian countries; however, this was impacted often by different nationalistic sentiments in Indonesia, rarely ones coming from Malaysia. Although tensions and separation have increased, Malays are much more likely to view Indonesians as a part of their nation than Indonesians are to view Malaysians as part of their nation. There are likely a variety of reasons contributing to this. Most importantly, Indonesia is a significantly larger country than Malaysia, with about 250 million people, while Malaysia only has about 30 million people, of whom only approximately half are ethnic Malays and 12% from other Bumiputera (native Malay) populations. Furthermore, while Indonesia does have some non pribumi (native Indonesian) populations, such as the Chinese Indonesians and Arab Indonesians, these numbers are significantly smaller than those in Malaysia, where the Chinese population makes up over 22% of the country and the Indian population makes up about 7%. There are also significantly more non citizens in Malaysia than there are in Indonesia, contributing to more questions of identity. By examining all the different parts of the country, such as climate and labour, Shadd paints a very positive overview of Canada. It s a very simple read and I was able to get through it without any issues. However, as I read it, I was quite concerned with how it was written. It was a very biased opinion of Canada and Shadd was constantly overselling the country to convince people to emigrate to Canada. She only addresses any concerns for the sheer purpose of just reassuring the reader and pushing it to the side. As a result, it grossly undermines the hardships that an immigrant may face, especially for African individuals. As this was written in 1852, racism was still rampant within North America and even though Canada had an anti slavery legislation, that does not dismiss the discrimination that Black citizens would face. Furthermore, moving to a new country and rebuilding a life there isn t as simple as Shadd portrays, especially during this time period. With only manual hard labour as job opportunities and being forced to survive out in the wilderness, this is a life that isn t suited for everyone. Shadd attempts to convince the readers that the hard work is worth it, but she does a very shallow job of doing so as she neglects to mention any of these difficulties. My Mother worked her whole life and still works today, she had lots of trouble raising four children until she met my Dad who adopted us. I remember we were getting canned food delivered to our trailer at one point before she met my Dad. It all changed when my Dad found my Mom and married her and took on all four of us. That was one thing we did have was a huge back yard with a fence, so we would pretend the yard was our ocean full of sharks. We would climb around the fence and if we fell, we got eaten by the sharks. For some reason this interview made me think of those great memories. Miyoko has a very tough situation to face. There were a few written records, so archaeologists focused primarily on artifacts to find out information about the past. In order to find out more about the past, archaeologists looked to the Folsom discoveries to help recognize early human origin, migration, and culture. In Folsom, New Mexico, a world famous archaeological site, archaeologists has made revolutionary discoveries, providing information on human migration and history. European Witch Hunt Essay The epoch of Medieval European history concerning the vast and complicated witch hunts spanning from 1450 to 1750 is demonstrative of the socioeconomic, religious, and cultural changes that were occurring within a population that was unprepared for the reconstruction of society. Though numerous conclusions concerning the witch trials, why they occurred, and who was prosecuted have been founded within agreement there remains interpretations that expand on the central beliefs. It is also agreed upon that the political and economic change found within Europe had an immense psychological affect, as the population believed in a fixed order of the cosmos, 3 encouraging them to rationalize the changes they were experiencing. Beyond these agreed upon opinions both Boss and Ben Yehuda develop additional perspectives. Boss explores the burgeoning cases of syphilis within misogynistic medieval society paralleled with the high rate of infanticide due to infected mothers. It was believed that witches engaged in sexual acts with the devil resulting in various adverse effects, one being the emergence of syphilis and infanticide. Boss notes that the syphilis association is evidenced in a common tendency for accusations of infanticide to rise with the tide of witchcraft prosecutions, 4 as women were targeted for the occurrence of infertility post plague. Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle in the hope that not only Americans would find themselves reading about the dark sides of the common industrial factories, but also people in other countries as well would see that life for the working class American that had to work in the industrial industry, specifically as seen in Sinclair s writing the meat packing industry was a dirty, and dangerous job for workers all caused by the hands of companies that didn t care about their employees. In the American Experience book it gives a chapter from the book The Jungle, called Living and Dying in Packington, Chicago Sinclair writes about the life of an immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus with glimpses of others in his community and their lives working in factories. The main points of Sinclair s work even from this small section of the whole writing is very heavy hitting along with at the time of publication probably was seen as controversial, it was a new type of writing a story that unfortunately this story was not made up, Sinclair used his experiences living in the workers ghettos of Packington, studying the people, and meatpacking industry (pg. 72). • 23. Could A Machine Be Conscious 1 Could a machine be conscious? This question is often dismissed as simple by those that would say yes in response. The usual claim made by the pro camp is that man is a biological machine and is conscious, ergo, a machine is conscious. If we, humans, are truly biological machines and we are at the same time conscious then I would agree that yes, categorically, a machine could be conscious. But is it really that simple? I contend that it is a more difficult problem but not that it is a complicated one, merely one of ambiguity which, once resolved, leads the contemplator to the same conclusion as I do that in fact, no, a machine could not be conscious. They have physical qualities which are an important distinction in the 3 concept of Artificial Intelligence which claims the ability of machines to achieve consciousness, arising in theory out of intelligence. The most prominent example of the concept of a machine being intelligent in the manner of this so called consciousness is the Turing test (Turing, 1950) which, rather tellingly, was originally called the Imitation Game . The test was designed to see if a machine could fool a human into thinking it was itself another human, and although somewhat successful with Eliza (Weizenbaum 1976), the premise was quickly, and I opine correctly, attacked by Searle (1980:417 57) in his Chinese Room thought experiment, proving that a machine can simulate communication without understanding and is therefore not thinking in the way humans, or perhaps other living things do. Humans exhibit the ability to pass tests without understanding the material and, I contend, this is what a machine simulates, the function of memory, not intelligence. Even if it could fool a ... Nsa Is The Spying Ofu.s Citizens The National Security Agency (NSA) has been an information gathering arm of the Executive branch since the Cold War and continues to be an essential part of ensuring the security of the United States. The public issue that involves the NSA is the spying of U.S citizens which can be seen as a violation of the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution. This was revealed to the public by the whistleblower Edward Snowden who released classified documents of activities that the NSA had been conducting in conjuncture with telecommunication companies, which angered many U.S citizens and received media coverage with a call for the U.S Government to restrict the NSA s activities or at least for there to be Congressional oversight. This debate revolves around how much the NSA s surveillance activities are actually used for national security as well as the constitutionality of the NSA s surveillance. This all began after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 when there was a call for the attacks to never happen again and the adoption of the Patriot Act in that same year which increased the power of the NSA. The National Security Agency over the past few years was revealed to have spied on American citizens under what can be considered illegal or unconstitutional circumstances which sparked concern and outrage across most of America. This time the council is proposing reviewing the timetables of a number of bus services in and around Witney, but also other rural areas of the County. I can t comment on services in other neighbourhoods, but our 18 and 19 routes are for many people a lifeline. For the elderly, unemployed, disabled and youths buses are the one and only form of transport available to them to get them into the main business centres of Witney and Oxford. The council is proposing reducing these services from hourly to two hourly. If you have opened the consultation papers online you would have noticed that this would save the council at most under £200,000 a sum which is insignificant in the annual transport budget of just over £53 million, but one with severe repercussions for many. The view of the Green Party is simple. We can t justify the existence of public services just on the basis of a crude income and expenditure analysis. In the instance of transport a proper cost benefit analysis should take into account matters such as benefit to the environment, sustainability and overall services distribution. In this context reducing buses in rural areas would clearly make no sense whatsoever. Countless previous examples ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The beliefs of many people around the world about the nature of homosexuality, go into two patterns called choice and gene. Is homosexuality a choice or a gene? Are we born the way we are? Or are we shaped by the environmental factors while we grow up? The origin of homosexuality has been discussed intensively around the world. Gay is a sexual orientation, but the fact of acting on it is a choice. However, every person has their own views regarding this concept throughout time. Some people believe that homosexuality is a way of living life that people choose. On the other hand, some say that homosexuality is a gene or even worse a disease. The hypotheses that homosexuality is a disease that can and need to be cured has been supported by multiple people around the world. Throughout history, research, doctors and philosophers have spent time debating about the origin of homosexuality. Edmund Bergler was one of them, an Austrian born American psychoanalyst whose book covered such topics as childhood development, mid life crises and human behavior in general. He was the most important theorist of homosexuality in the 1950s. In 1951, Bergler wrote Homosexuality: Disease or Way of life to deeply explore the origin of homosexuality. That s him pushing the stone up the hill, the jerk (34 37): Seems like Mrs. Sisyphus, throughout the poem, is attempting to rule out her workaholic husband of any chance to explain himself or tell his side of the story on why he works a lot. The reader may even argue that there may be some valid complaints that she states but she s not all that sympathetic. Dennis Carlson Jr. testified as an expert witness for the petitioners as a tire failure analyst, intending that the tire s manufacture or design caused the blow out. Whereas his opinion was based on visual and tactile inspection of the tire; upon this theory this sort of tire failure was the result of a defect and not tire abuse. The petitioner s moved to exclude Mr. Carlson s testimony on the ground that his methodology failed to satisfy Federal Rules of Evidence Rule 702. The District Court granted the petitioner s summary judgment motion arguing that in examining the factors set out in Daubert v Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals. Inc. Mr. Carlson s methodology is not reliable. (Kumho Tire Co., 2015). The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals reversed, held that the District Court erred as a matter of law in applying Daubert, and held that the Daubert factors did not apply to Mr. Carlson s testimony. (Kumho Tire Co., 2015). Judge Stephen Breyer delivered the opinion for the United States Supreme Court holding that the Daubert factors may apply to the testimony of engineers and other experts who are not scientists. The District Courts decision to not admit Mr. Carlson s expert testimony was lawful because it found his methodology unreliable after appropriate examinations (Rule 702, ... • 41. Adrienne Rich Education Rich Analysis Poet Adrienne Rich gave an inspiring speech during a convocation at Douglass College in 1977. Even though this was quite a few decades ago, her words are still relevant today. Education is still not taken as seriously as it should be and this is disappointing because it is the most important tool that leads to a successful life. Rich s speech describes how to claim an education rather than simply receive one, and this is something that all students need to take into consideration. Most students take a passive approach to their education. In other words, they do the bare minimum needed in order to get by and receive their diploma. However, what they don t understand is that this is hurting them more than helping them. From what I read in the posts from my fellow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is difficult to balance extracurricular activities, family and friends, and a part time job while staying on top of schoolwork. Unfortunately, out of these five things, it is schoolwork that suffers the most. I was one of these students. I was a cheerleader all four years of high school and I was involved in numerous clubs and organizations. I also worked 3 4 shifts a week as a waitress from my sophomore to senior year. I started out taking all honors/AP classes my freshman year but the more clubs and activities I became involved in, the less advanced classes I was taking. I did not take advantage of the free education I was given and I didn t realize how big of a deal it was that I was offered college classes in high school. I was more than capable of taking the higher level classes, but I was just too lazy. I regret the decisions I made and I always encourage my family and friends that are still in grade school to take all of the classes they can because it will pay off. I did not have anyone encouraging me to go the extra mile so I simply just didn t. I have always been surrounded by people that believe that men are superior to women, ... • 42. Maus by Art Spiegelman Essay Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic is composed of symbols to express concepts shared by all people in their own social environment, and provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention. Comics exist to expose the ethnic representations that seek to control the development of collective perceptions, memories and emotions and especially fear by investigating the techniques through which this control is maintained. Maus I is a true account of a Holocaust survivor, Vladek Spiegelman, and his experiences as a young Jew during the horrors leading up to the confinement in Auschwitz. Maus II is about Vladek recounting his own history to his son Art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the Holocaust. He uses real features of human beings such as hands, feet and emotions to give the animals the full potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being seen in sharper relief as human concerns in the world of mice. Spiegelman decided on interesting but possibly offensive use of different animals to use. The first type of animal which appears in this comic is the mouse (MausI:5). The form of mice is used to represent the Jewish people during the Holocaust and as of now too. The Polish police were involved in the arrest of innocent Jewish mice (27). The Polish people were pigs and Germans were represented as cats. The Germans appearance as cats began to make sense in the way how cats chase, hunt and kill mice (33). This comic book was translated into an easily readable format to educate the history of the Holocaust to the younger generations. Second, the choice of a comic format serves as a vital aspect in the reader s understanding of the visual society and making awareness through generations as more attuned to the image than to the word. In Vladek s world, being and living as a human meant living in fear. Vladek escapes the fear of death for a time through the intercession of an S.S. officer who wanted to learn English from him and in return provided him with some protection (78). This ... • 43. A Look at the Final Chapter of Timothy Glander’s Book,... The final chapter of Timothy Glander s book, Origins of Mass Communications Research During the American Cold War: Educational Effects and Contemporary Implications (2000) stands as a disappointing example of academic research becoming hijacked by the author s personal opinion. Focusing on the hidden nature of propaganda in American life, his concluding chapter presents a very drastic view of the individuals who crafted the academic subject now known as mass communications. I see the need for investigating the status quo, for digging into the motivations behind the images and data churned out in the mass media, and for questioning the trivia facts that become common knowledge. For that reason, I am wary of completely discrediting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Circling any solid thesis, he claims that generations of Americans have been brainwashed by mass communications, ruining any genuine community life (2000, p. 214), a vague picture of the pre Cold War era that never becomes defined. The Cold War era may have featured significant changes in the way American communities functioned, but summoning up a sitcom image instead of genuine examples to support one of his key arguments simply weakens his case. His one clearly stated goal is to revive the association of the phrase mass communications with the word propaganda a word that appears thirty times in these fourteen pages. Making the unfortunate choice of attempting to eliminate detractors of his claim without addressing their concerns, Glander frames them as being lost in the propaganda of their time. His claim, people still remain largely unable to...understand the powerful ways in which [television] is used to shape and control their thinking (2000, p. 207) means every generation since the Cold War is so permeated by mass communications that they are now incapable of external analysis. Using this logic, critics of his argument are brainwashed by this new establishment, a victim of social control that they cannot see or change, leaving us in a vicious circle at the mercy of the media. Two accompanying book reviews echo my concerns with this logic. Found in History of Education Quarterly (2001) and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Dimmesdale Symbolism In Scarlet Letter Symbolism in a character portrays the true meaning behind that individual and gives the reader a better understanding of the novel as a whole. Dimmesdale is very well known to the people of the Puritan town in Boston. In this book, he proves to everyone that he is a true sinner, but not a well known sinner. He kept this secret of adultery from everyone in the town; it showed that he is a secret sinner. Dimmesdale symbolizes weakness and self centered intellectualism; he understands what is right, but doesn t have the courage to confess his sins to the town. The main reason the people of the town love Dimmesdale is because he hasn t told them his sins. He accepts that once he does reveal what he did wrong, the citizens will treat him awfully. ... Both Dimmesdale and Hester committed adultery, but Hester was the one who got all the hatred and disrespect from everyone in the Puritan town. She went through some awful situations with the scarlet letter, and it changed her so much. While she was going through all this pain, Dimmesdale was hiding his sins. This was a selfish act by Dimmesdale towards Hester and Pearl, but not admitting the sin bit him right in the butt. He was torturing himself and receiving physical pain in various ways; he whipped himself, stared at the mirror for periods of time, and starved himself. Even though he didn t reveal his sin to the public, his heart was still making itself guilty of such secrets (127). He felt very guilty for the agony that Hester has been through. She has experienced hatred from herself mentally and from the Puritan people verbally. He didn t want the people to treat him like they treated Hester; he loves how he gets respect from the townspeople. The only pain he has received was from himself mentally and physically, but not verbal and emotional pain like Hester. He doesn t want to experience those dreadful moments that she had gone through. • 47. Brave New World States Research Paper Home of the Brave America has long promised a life of ease for all citizens. Today, our technological and scientific developments keep thousands of people, if not happy, then comfortable. Correspondingly, the inhabitants of the World State portrayed in Aldous Huxley s Brave New World live entirely content lifestyles due to their technological and scientific advances. Both the World State and modern American societies share a common background, and while Huxley s futuristic world may have advanced farther than our society has, America is continually developing into a Brave New World. Parallels of the two worlds exist in abundance within the novel, perhaps the most obvious examples of which lie in the desire to retain youth and the use of drugs in both societies. World State citizens never grow old, at least not on the surface. Huxley explains how his characters . . .keep their internal secretions artificially balanced at a youthful equilibrium (111). The process described allows Huxley s characters to continue to look young as their bodies grow old. Subsequently, a thirty year old character appears the same as a sixty year old character, their skin having never wrinkled or sagged. However, the retaining of youth does not suppress the internal effects of aging, the sixty year ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
