Masculinity In The Man From Snowy River
Lucas in her articles regarding Australian masculinity presented in cinemas suggests that the themes of
social perception and presentation of masculinity and maleness have been repeatedly used in
Australian cinemas (Lucas Page 138). She adds that images of masculinity in cinema may reflect and
maintain the dominant hegemonic masculinity, but as well may also challenge the dominant concepts
of masculinity (Lucas 139). A large number of Australian cinemas display standard perspectives of
masculinity, which promotes the binary impression of male and maleness, which includes logical,
domination, violence or competition (Lucas page 139 140).
Lucas presents the reflection of masculinity in the Australian cinemas by drawing example from The
Man from Snowy River (I) , where she analyzes the conventional masculinity by narrating the
development of the male character in the movie characterized as young Jom Criag (Tom Burlinson)
who has to inherits knowledge and strengths from his father. During his journey to manhood after his
father s death, he meets another man through whom he learns survival skills, develop friendship, win
over his rebel and proclaim heroic status. Lucas promulgates through her analysis that this movie
reflects the dominant and hegemonic masculinity by presenting that a masculine figure needs to adapt,
be physically strong, and be determinant of his aspirations (Lucas page 140)
I have drawn examples from Thorpe s article, which has presented the elements of

Incidents In The Life Of The Runaway Slave Girl
William Grimes in the, Life of William Grimes the Runaway Slave, and Harriet Jacobs in the,
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, both wrote about their lives under the hands of slavery. Though
they both experienced hardships, the difference in gender played a role in how their enslavement was
endured. These different experiences influenced different tones. In Chapter three of Incidents, Jacobs
tone is emotional, hopeless and depressing. She writes But to the slave mother New Year s day comes
laden with peculiar sorrows. She sits on her cold cabin floor, watching the children who may all be
torn from her the next morning: and often does she wish that she and they might die before the day
dawns. The words she uses radiates the devotion between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Grimes targeted anyone willing or curious enough to listen, Jacobs specifically targeted white,
Christian women. The tone she used was critical and emotional. The sentence He tried his utmost to
corrupt the pure principles my grandmother had instilled. would provoke emotion from female
Christian readers, because it goes against their beliefs. She wants her audience to think and fully
understand the hardships she faced, therefore she makes her tone critical. She engages the reader by
saying, He told me I was his property; that I must subject to his will in all things. My soul revolted
against the mean tyranny. But where could I turn to for protection? The sentence is shortly followed
up by her stating why she feels trapped. The mistress is of no help to a slave girl, she is jealous and
angry with her. This promotes the thoughts and feelings of the slave girl and make the reader criticize
themselves. While Grimes on the other hand stayed objective. On page 78, Grimes says after receiving
a severe beating, I had before anticipated this, for I knew he could not do without me: all he wanted of
me, to set me at liberty, was for me to ask his pardon, and promise never to ask him to sell me again.
Even when he endured severe beating and imprisonment he stayed emotionless. Both authors shared
their compelling stories about their personal hand in slavery. Though they have had many similar and
different

The Role Of Women In Raisin In The Sun And Trifles
Men and women are constantly debating what their true role in life is. In a family, the women were
expected to do the laundry, cook, and clean, while the men went to work and made money for their
family. This idea has changed drastically over the years. Women are now able to get an education and
work if they d like. Sixty years ago, this would not have been possible. Most men and women now
share the housework, and both have full time jobs. In Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and
Trifles by Susan Glaspell the women struggle with being unheard by their husbands. In Raisin in the
Sun, Ruth Younger struggles with her husband, Walter Lee, when he does not listen to her when they
discuss their money problems. Walter strives to have more money, so he can provide his family with
nice things. He is tired of being overlooked by the white men that he works for and wants to be more
like them. Walter hates the job that he has because he must obey a white man. He constantly feels like
the women in his life do not listen to his struggles and confides in alcohol instead of speaking with his
family about his emotions. Walter Lee constantly belittles his wife saying, that just goes to show you
what women understand about the world...nothing will happen for you in this world less you pay
somebody off! (Hansberry 81). Again, the women s opinions and thoughts are overlooked by the men
in the play. In the end, Walter Lee chooses to do the right thing and becomes the hero. When

Meridian Hawk Descriptive Writing
Autumn Durbin We Are Meridian There are many things that make up being a Meridian Hawk. You
can t just expect to be a Hawk after just a few days. Everybody needs experience of how this school
district is special and different from the others. There are many reasons for being proud of this school.
All of the teachers are greatly understanding to where they make learning fun, the school field trips
are amazing ( we are very grateful), and I am delighted about this new building that they made for us.
I feel special because it s as if someone cares about all of the students. Any other school isn t as
different as this one. Things at Meridian are rare and we are remarkably lucky to have a great place to
learn. Every school you go to, you leave a part of your life to stay there forever. You are always going
to be a Bobcat or a Tornado or something else. Like Ms. Deckard, you can be multiple things. Well, I
happen to be something that I am very proud of. I am proud to be a Meridian Hawk! There are many
things at this school that makes it worth enrolling into. I am ecstatic to have attended Meridian my
whole life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How does the school pay for such things? The latest field trip was fascinating to attend. I was amazed
that everybody could go back the second day after the first day was canceled! The trip was delightful,
nonetheless. The fundraisers are supposed to help pay for those things but I still feel lousy. It s like I
didn t give enough money for the trips. They appear to be more than $2,000 for just one trip. One day,
I hope to be able to take my child on a Washington D.C. trip from Meridian Middle School. The
faculty here is protective of us. When I go on a field trips, I want to be able to know immediately that
nothing bad will happen. I can think that on every trip we have because I know that someone is
looking out for me. If I could, I would donate to the school for every field trip we would go

Ouija Boards Exorcism
On a gloomy Tuesday night, a group of teenagers from George Mason University circled around an
Ouija board to find out what their final grade from a psychology class, Mystery, Madness, and Murder
would be. Soon after, the planchette moved, allowing them to communicate with evil spirits from
another dimension. Unfortunately, this communication led them into learning not only their final
grade, but also into being haunted by an evil spirit until the end of their lives. This, surprisingly, is a
very common practice in the United States. Even the International Exorcists Association (AIE) states
that the usage of Ouija boards increased the exorcism practices within the U.S. (cite). According to a
recent poll on LiveScience, 65% of Americans believe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Patricia Martinelli, in the late 19th century, an interest in spiritualism was strong both in
the United States and Europe as people wondered what happened to those who had died (Martinelli,
2009). Considering that the average human life span in that era, its not a surprise that people tried to
communicate with dead through several ways. Therefore, instead of being perceived as outside the
social norms, talking to dead was pretty common in the 19th century, which encouraged people to
search for new ways of contacting the dead. Furthermore, Ouija boards have their roots under this
branch of Spiritualism, which is a movement that began in the United States in the late 1840s, and was
led by mediums, who claimed to be intermediaries between the living and the dead (McCarthy, 2014).
In the 1880s, some curiosity seekers used homemade talking boards to divine answers from spirits
whom they assumed to be friendly (Martinelli, 2009). These types of talking boards became very
popular, and in 1890, Elijah Bond, Charles Kennard and William H.A. Maupin filed the first patent for
a game they called the Ouija board, which looked and operated much like the talking boards used
among; the patent was granted in 1891 (McCarthy,

Domination And Slavery In Mexico
Domination and slavery were over in Mexico. Mexico was liberated from Spaniards, but the
descendants of Spain had a higher power and the Indians and Mexicans had fewer rights and power.
Those that govern were the Mestizos. Although Mexicans were already free, the Spaniards left them
with nothing and poor. Spaniards took everything; their lives, money, traditions, and most important
their dignity. Mexico was left with a lot of territories. Mexico owned what is all of Mexico nowadays
and some of the states of the United States. Given the circumstances, United States was also
expanding territory at that time and was in the processing of spreading more. Clearly, the governance

Many Mexicans experience horrible deaths such as hangings, public whipping, and branding
(Covarrubias). In addition, this is just the same thing Spaniards did they took property, slave them, and
kill them with no guilt. Americans and Spanish took the goods and the opportunity of making Mexico
raise as the richest country it could of being with all the work they did on the mines of golf. A big
difference between the invasion of U.S. and Spain was that the United States invaded with the idea of
Manifest Destiny and the belief that it was god s will to expand to the pacific and that Indians were the
obstacle (Covarrubias). The question who was the chosen one to receive this message and do god s

Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Summary
What Goes Around Comes Around
The astonishing work of fiction, Sweat , by Zora Neale Hurston, captures the ultimate importance of
people receiving what they truly deserve. The storyline of Hurston s Sweat encompasses karma as the
theme in numerous, yet diverse ways. Hurston uses the snake to bring about karma in Sweat . She
depicts the negative connections to snakes such as fear, evil, immorality, night and slyness. While also
linking the snake to positive symbols, such as rejuvenation and independence. This theme only
became overt in the story through the lens of the protagonist, Delia, an African American launderer
who is married to Sykes. He constantly taunts her about her phobia of snakes and attempts to kill her,

The Cardiac Cycle
To keep the blood moving around the body supplying vital nutrients to cells and removing waste, a
cycle of contractions (systole) and relaxations (diastole) take place, this cycle is known as the cardiac
cycle. There are three stages to the cardiac cycle, all stages happen during one heartbeat (cycle) and
take less than a second in total (Revisionworld.com, 2017), these different stages are pictured in figure
11.
During stage one the pressure in both ventricles decreases as they relax, the atrioventricular valves
open slightly and blood is pumped through them due to a contraction of the atria. Blood is prevented
from flowing backwards as the valves of the vena cava and pulmonary vein close. During stage two
pressure in the ventricles increases

Texas Tax Rebates
There is no doubt that Texas s state government is one of the most conservative in the nation on both
an economic and social level. As a governing body Texas has fought to deregulate itself on the bases
that a weak government translates to strong personal liberties. The political culture of the state is
apparent to all who live there. However, in recent history Texas has proven to be a solid competitor
when offering tax rebates to filmmakers and videogame creators who produce their content in the
state. These rebates refund some of the production costs and are widely considered to be beneficial to
employment within the state s entertainment and tourism industry (Weed). Sadly, in 2015 Texas
lawmakers cut the previously impressive budget for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The argument comes from the fiscally conservative mindset, arguing that using taxpayer money for
non necessities, like film is wasteful. However, this view overlooks that the state s rebate program
exists as an investment that the state will eventually make profit on in the form of economic growth
through employment. The legislation providing such rebates likely would never have existed in the
first place if it were not economically beneficial to the state. Additionally, providing rebates is more
likely to attract production of the benefit films that have tighter budgets and have trouble breaking
even, rather than the stereotypical big budget films, meaning that rebates could mean the difference of
a production company moving forward with riskier films or not. The Hollywood welfare argument is a
politically expedient one because of the way Hollywood is viewed politically in present day American
culture. Many on America s rightwing view Hollywood as a big elitist organization with a liberal
political agenda. Rhetoric like Hollywood welfare truly is a representation of the divisive nature of
modern times. Schimmel writes in an essay regarding rhetoric that language affects our perception and
understanding of social and political realities, irrespective of how accurately it reflects them.
Conservative state politicians have capitalized on the preconditioned distrust conservatives have
toward Hollywood paired with the negative connotations that the political right has associated with
welfare has led to film tax incentives taking major blows, especially in predominantly conservative

THE PARMALAT SCANDAL
The Parmalat situation started out as a fairly standard although sizeable accounting fraud. Not even
the best auditors could prepare for what was to come from this company. The Parmalat group, a world
leader in the dairy food business, collapsed and entered bankruptcy protection in December 2003 after
acknowledging massive holes in its financial statements. This happened when billions of euros seem
to have gone missing from the company s accounts. This dramatic collapse has led to the questioning
of the soundness of accounting and financial reporting standards as well as of the Italian corporate
governance system. Parmalat, which is headquartered in the central Italian city of Parma, was, like

Most of the money that moved in, around and out of the company has since been traced, although the
final destination of some of it is still unknown. Tanzi has admitted transferring some €500 million to
family firms, but investigators say that up to €1.3 billion may have gone this route. Tanzi was
sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraud relating to the collapse of the dairy group. The other seven
defendants, including executives and bankers, were acquitted. Another eight defendants settled out of
court in September 2008. In September 2009, three lawsuits by Parmalat Capital Finance Ltd. and
Enrico Bondi, CEO of Parmalat, against Bank of America and auditors Grant Thornton, were
dismissed.
In an attempt to downplay the extent to which corruption and fraud have penetrated to the heart of
global capitalism, commentators have seized on the fact that many of Parmalat s former top executives
are related to claim that the scandal is simply a case of a family firm failing to adhere to good
corporate governance practices. Not surprisingly, Parmalat s top executives are going along with this
story, insisting they were only acting under orders from the padrone. The scandal, however, has
engulfed other major firms. There are the accounting firms Grant Thornton and Deloitte and Touche,
and the banks Citicorp and Bank of America. Citicorp is directly linked to the $1.5

The Crucial Role Of Violence In Africa
Violence plays a crucial role in the liberation of various African countries. The necessity of the
violence, and the justifications for the violence are both highly debatable. However, knowing the
prominent role that violence played in the initial colonization, is a justifiable and necessary act of the
colonized peoples in the fight for their independence. War and violence played a large role in various
political changes throughout history; often war is used as a tactic to force change, when all else has
failed. The people of these African countries are using violence in much the same way, to take back
their freedom. An oppressed people cannot be punished for their violent actions intended to take back
their basic human rights. Especially when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this mindset of the colonizers, the colonized find necessity and justification in their violent
actions for their freedom and liberation. Fanon, discussing the Battle for Algiers, writes, The Front de
la Liberation Nationale (FLN) in a famous tract stated that colonialism only loosens its hold when the
knife is at its throat (Fanon, 23). If the governing force is willing to torture and kill many innocent
Muslim people for the suppression of the rebellion, then the only option is more bloodshed to stop the
killing and the torture. Though violent actions often hurt innocent bystanders, the FLN believed it was
still necessary in order to have their will accepted and acknowledged. Understanding the justification
of violence that injures and sometimes even kills innocent people is hard; however, if one looks at it
from the point of view of the oppressed, the people are standing by, watching them be treated like
animals and doing nothing to help. They are now accomplices instead of innocent bystanders, and the
violence is once again

Introduction of Indirect Taxing on Energy Drinks in France
This article discusses how France introduced an indirect tax on energy drinks at €1 per liter. The tax
was imposed to tackle alcohol consumption among France s young population and energy drinks
consumption due to its high levels of caffeine and sugar.
A form of government intervention, an indirect tax, a tax placed on consumption that is considered
indirect since households only pay then when they buy a good, affects the energy drinks market
outcomes.
Pertaining to the diagram above, previous to government intervention, the energy drinks market was

Many people from Poland feel like they are being pushed out of their country. Some say that they feel
like that are being drawn to move to America. The largest wave of Polish immigrants came to America

war, more jobs, and for better opportunities. More than 65% of immigrants chose the United States of
America. Polish immigrants experienced many push and pull factors that drew them out of Poland and
to America out of all the surrounding countries in the world. Poles have recently been noticing that
they are slowly being pushed out of Poland. There were many things that told them that they had to

Concealment in the Twelfth Night Essay
British Literature: Concealment in Twelfth Night
Throughout Twelfth Night, concealment influences each character s life because it s essential to
portray how falsehood can be amusing or agonizing before they can discover their identity in life.
Therefore, the concept of concealment not only affects the characters mistaken identities and abilities
to express true love, but it gives the story comedic and entertaining qualities. Furthermore,
concealment portrayed throughout this story makes each character develop an identity with either
showing cleverness or madness, while it also makes each character realize the principles towards
obtaining love and truth. For instance, Viola s disguise as Cesario and Feste s costume as Sir Topas

Consequently, Viola learns that in the role of Cesario, she had to be quick on her feet and defend the
probing questions and statements as to her love and others love for her. Also, she acquired the skill to
bide her time, until the time was right, in case she reveal her true self or intentions. The disguise also
prevents Viola from expressing her love for Orsino, it contributes to the dramatic ironies by causing
complications of mistaken identity. Moreover, Viola cannot show her love for Orsino, the only way
she can express them is in her soliloquies to the reader, this contributes to the dramatic ironies. For
example, when Viola conveys to Orsino what Olivia told her concerning love by saying:
A blank, my lord. She never told her love, But let concealment, like a worm i the bud, Feed on her
damask cheek. She pined in thought, And with a green and yellow melancholy She sat like patience on

indeed Our shows are more than will, for still we prove Much in our vows, but little in our love
(2.4.108 115). There are many examples of concealment concerning Viola alone, which enables her to
work for Orsino as a messenger: it causes Olivia to fall in love with her and it causes both of them to
disguise their feelings from each other until Orsino becomes aware that Cesario is

Women s Fight For Combat Roles
Joan of Arc: A women in Combat
A great leader knows how and what to do in any given situation. Great leaders know how to adapt, and
find a way to conquer a specific task or obstacle. There has been an ongoing debate about whether
women should have access to combat roles. Many argue that women are not physically build to match
the strength of a man. A young lady by the name of Joan of Arc or commonly known as The Maid of
Orleans was a young leader of the 15th century who changed the course of the hundred years war.
Joan became an unlikely heroine leader who led a revolt against the British which ultimately ended in
a victory. Joan embodies the definition of what a women in the military should be. She debunks the
21st century modern critics that say women do not fit the standards to survive and thrive in combat
roles. The objective of this paper is to identify key arguments that are in favor of women fighting in
combat. Gender equality among women has been a longstanding battle. Many are for gender neutral
roles in the military, and many are against it. The people that are against it believe that women will
endanger their units . While the Army and the Navy believes that it will enlarge the talent pool, and
that opening combat roles to women will enhance the readiness of the military.
In our view, the best qualified solider, regardless of gender, should be allowed to serve in any position,

Food Stamp Program Research Paper
Recommendation: White House budget proposal for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The administration wants to slash the program by 30 percent,
which is about 2 percent of the Federal Budget. Under the proposal SNAP recipients would lose much
of their ability to choose the food they buy with their SNAP benefits because in lieu of that they will
receive a monthly box of food. The proposed plan would be in enacted in 2019. It would require
approval from Congress before any significant changes are made.

Reflection On Education
I ve been able to connect my civic engagement work with our discussions in prosem mostly through
our conversations about education and the intersection of immigration and education. All of the kids I
worked with at Moder Patshala were either immigrants themselves, or were the children of newly
arrived immigrants, and with that, they were low income and/or first generation students in the US.
This highly overlaps with the presentations we did on education: one intersecting with low income
students and the other with English language learners. From these discussions, I ve been able to
develop how to better support the students I worked with who were still learning English. The
conversations around certain classroom situations and how you should react were really interesting
and got me thinking about my strategies for supporting the students I worked with, which was
beneficial for my work, the student s education, and our relationship. A lot of times when there is a
language barrier, a student will get very frustrated and I was able to think critically about how to more
visibility show my patience and encourage the student through the process. In terms of FGLI students,
I had never really thought about the importance in verbalizing that I was a FGLI student too. I had
always tried to not mention the fact I was from Penn, because I didn t want there to be this power
dynamic between the student and I and also between me and the tutors from other schools. But I

A Little Under A Year
A little under a year ago I wrote in this place about an encounter I d had with Barry Sheerman MP and
a Virgin Trains snack box on a train travelling from Manchester to London. At the time, what most
bothered me about the snack box was its weird appearance: the cardboard printed with photo real
wickerwork so as to give the impression it was a sturdy hamper full of wholesome victuals ideal for a
leisurely picnic lunch, rather than the flimsy packet of salty and sugary titbits Richard Branson was
giving me for my real life meal.
I swore at the end of my column that I would keep the hideous snack box for ever to remind me never
to eat such toxic pap, but when I was tidying up my office the other day and came upon it looking just
as vile with its fake leather luggage tags that read, respectively, Virgin Trains and Follow a Different
Train of Thought I did indeed follow a different train of thought: I happen to be going up to
Manchester in a couple of days. Why don t I take the snack box with me and, when I get there, eat it?
Yes, yes, I know eating the contents of a Virgin Trains snack box at my age looks like giving in to a
dreadful taedium vitae, but I liked the idea of negating the entire Sheerman/Branson/snack box cluster
fuck by performing this odd little ritual; perhaps, I unreasoned, if I eat it mindfully enough I ll succeed
in flipping us all into a parallel universe where Richard Branson doesn t exist, and where the business

Architecture As Space By Peter Goldberger

Art Gallery Analysis
Rohini Contractor 1430251 Architecture as space by Peter Goldberger discusses the significance of
the interior space within architecture as it is where the viewer has a true experience. The feeling when
entering a building builds a foundation for the viewers expectations and is most influential to their
judgement of the space. With a comparison of a person s reaction to a building from the exterior to the
interior, Goldberger explains that an exterior is viewed as a whole and seen in a context however the
interior will mould the persons experience with choice of lighting, form and space. His discussion of
how space can influence the users movement proves that the architect can directly control the user or
even through light determine the mood either with natural lighting or use artificial lighting for
something that can be controlled .
After reading this text I believe there are many different aspects of the interior that play a significant
role in creating an experience for anyone that enters the building. I believe it a responsibility of the
architect to create a feel appropriate for the space, in the case of art galleries it should be expressive to
invite visitors yet not to detract from the artwork itself. Being a commercial space it should also be
suited for an audience of all ages while creating a sense of community. However Goldberger focusses
mainly on interior being a primary experience and although it is

After the confederate goes down in defeat we see a pattern begin to form in which Yankeedom uses its

on indeterminacy, the idea that the piece will change each time it is performed. Indeterminacy was a
reaction to serialism, where every aspect of a piece of music was structured to avoid repetition. Paul
Ziff, an artist and philosopher, wrote an article in 1997 titled, Anything Viewed. This article asserted
that a work of art is something that is fit to be an object of aesthetic attention (Ziff, 1997). He

When this piece was performed for the first time at an event for sponsors of avant garde music, the
audience was confused and upset. They had spent money to what they perceived as sit in silence only
to watch a man open and close a lid six times. When we listened to this piece in class on April 21,
2017, we were informed of the piece beforehand and were expecting an allotted time of silence. While
sitting in expected silence, we heard the noises of the room, people drinking water, coughing, and
breathing. But the original audience was listening for traditionally understood sounds. Additionally, as
Ziff comments on the Sistine Chapel murals and how they are not aesthetically worthwhile, because
the conditions have failed the person (1997). He states, it would be worthwhile if... the Chapel was
turned on its side, otherwise, it is painful too look at and difficult to see in detail.
Based on these criteria, 4 33 is a work of art based on these criteria. A person can perform an action

perform an action with the piece by interacting with its message of how we live our lives in
expectation while also blocking out other aspects that we otherwise would have experienced. Of

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Employees
5.3 .2 Disadvantages
Apart from the advantages offered by captives, there are some factors that limit captive expected
performance.
These include:
Lack of market co operation.
Lack of adequate statistics.
Government control.
Insurance nationalism.
Tied up capital.
Reinsurance cost.
While companies form captives with the initial motive of underwriting its parent s risks, they are
likely to need the cooperation of the market. Sometime market co operation is very difficult to get,
especially in a very difficult insurance market environment where the possibility of creating a parent
company is either not available or it is possible only at exorbitant cost.
Also, if the risk being put into a captive is of an uninsurable nature ... Show more content on

The growth of captives has been gradual in the early stage until the 1960s, and 1970s, when a
substantial expansion took place. The growth may be seen as a clear evidence of the demand by
corporations and institutions for a greater level of cost efficiency and response to new problems of risk
management.
The coming of captives brought significant changes in the business environment of risk management
and even greater changes are envisaged to occur in the future. The changes captives brought along
have affected many including commercial insurers and reinsurers, government bodies, the operation of
insurance agents and brokers in the distribution systems for insurance. The effects are felt in the
competitive pressure experienced by the traditional insurance market brought about by captive
presence, which has brought about important underwriting changes among the commercial insurers.
The current method of rate making by commercial insurers is altered significantly because of the
growing importance of captive, since current rating classes now tend to be broad, permitting the
average insurer to operate in a fairly level and stable rate structure across industries. Thus, firms with
relatively favourable loss experience are contributing to losses of those with poorer experience.
Captives constituted a big threat for the conventional insurance because they have a lot going for
them. The traditional insurance market did not welcome captive movement because it saw the
movement as a threat to its share of the insurance market. They were made to accept captives when
they realised that many businesses were flourishing as a result of captive activities and they benefited
directly and indirect from those

Italian Family Research Paper
After researching my family history I found out that most of my family is Italian. Italy s flag is really
simple it has three stripes and they are green white red. According to encyclopedia Britannica Italy s
population is 59,993,000 as of 2014 and the capital of Italy is Rome. Italy has some interesting
customs and traditions also, did you know according to encyclopedia Britannica they eat Sardinian
stuffed eggplant? Even though my family is mostly Italian we don t do nearly as much stuff as some
Italian people do! If you think about Italy s a pretty interesting country. Italy has much more cool back
round information than the facts I already told you. According to encyclopedia Britannica Italy is
mostly made up of Roman Catholics, although there are some Muslims and Protestants. Britannica
also says that some of history s most dramatic parts in history. They are old but still beautiful, like
temples alters and city walls are still standing. Some important businesses and industries in Italy
according to Britannica are chemical and petrochemicals, craftsmen, artisans, designers, builders, and
farmers. The website Britannica states that in Italy they grow wheat, flour, olives, ... Show more

One thing we do a lot of that is Italian is the food. Every Tuesday we have pizza. At least once a week
we have lasagna or pasta. We also have salad every night with dinner that we eat after the main course
like they do in Italy. My family (besides me) is kind of obsessed in football every year we go to a
neighbor s house for a party and watch the Super bowl, except they don t play a lot of football in Italy.
Another big thing we do have to do with food also is restaurants. Almost every restaurant we go to is
Italian and if it s not then we end up finding things on the menu that is Italian. So I guess we do do
quite a bit of Italian things after

Paddock s Art Analysis
Paddock is known for many different art media fields such as sculptor, graphic design, and furniture
designer. I was inspired, however, by his paintings and knew of him through those as well. I chose to
recreate one of Ewing Paddock s paintings from the London Underground series. I was inspired by his
works because each of them are unique and diverse. Paddock s paintings also interested me because
they were all recently painted. He started the London Underground series in 2009 and it took him
three years to complete 25 canvases, painting around 70 people. In each of his paintings you can see
the emotion that the person is giving off which is one reason I enjoy them. All 25 of the canvas are
super interesting to look and see the different characters

The Characterizations on the English Patient
In Michael Ondaatje s The English Patient, is set before World War II, critically illustrates four
dissimilar characters who meet together at the Villa San Girolamo, an Italian monastery.
Simultaneously, there is a groundbreaking love story happened among those four characters under that
time frames. Those four main people are included, a burned Englishman Ladislaus de Almasy, a
twenty year old French Canadian Army nurse Hana, a Sikh British Army sapper Kip, and Canadian
thief David Caravaggio. However, the burned English man, was called The English Patient, who is
being taken care by Hana in an abandoned Italian monastery. Then, there are two more characters,
David Caravaggio, Kip, both come meet together at the villa. ... Show more content on

When he is asked by Hana about his name, he neither answers, nor refuses Hana s assumption. When
interrogated by Caravaggio about his work as a cartographer and a spy at the beginning of the war, the
patient also does not response except the repeated babbling. When admiring the scene of the desert
and the exotic names of the places in Africa, he declares, I didn t want my name against such beautiful
names. Erase my family name! Erase nations. I was taught such things by the desert (139). His hunger
for the erasure of name which reflect the hate of ownership of the desert is the rejection of
homogeneity. Obviously, his desire of discarding the map and refusing to name the desert appears
form his conversations with Caravaggio. As author says, We die containing a richness of lovers and
tribes, tastes we have swallowed, we are communal histories, communal books .... All I desired was to
walk upon such an earth that had no maps. (261) It is a strange wish for a mapmaker to live on an
earth that had no maps. The cartography is the really true form of labeling to Almasy, who is against
labeling others. This labeling states the process of labeling which affects the way people think of
others. The English patient seems to transcend time, place, and ethnic origin. He becomes a synonym
for absence or anonymity since he has no defining substance of his own, no containing or delimiting
skin. The

  • 2. Masculinity In The Man From Snowy River Lucas in her articles regarding Australian masculinity presented in cinemas suggests that the themes of social perception and presentation of masculinity and maleness have been repeatedly used in Australian cinemas (Lucas Page 138). She adds that images of masculinity in cinema may reflect and maintain the dominant hegemonic masculinity, but as well may also challenge the dominant concepts of masculinity (Lucas 139). A large number of Australian cinemas display standard perspectives of masculinity, which promotes the binary impression of male and maleness, which includes logical, domination, violence or competition (Lucas page 139 140). Lucas presents the reflection of masculinity in the Australian cinemas by drawing example from The Man from Snowy River (I) , where she analyzes the conventional masculinity by narrating the development of the male character in the movie characterized as young Jom Criag (Tom Burlinson) who has to inherits knowledge and strengths from his father. During his journey to manhood after his father s death, he meets another man through whom he learns survival skills, develop friendship, win over his rebel and proclaim heroic status. Lucas promulgates through her analysis that this movie reflects the dominant and hegemonic masculinity by presenting that a masculine figure needs to adapt, be physically strong, and be determinant of his aspirations (Lucas page 140) I have drawn examples from Thorpe s article, which has presented the elements of ... Incidents In The Life Of The Runaway Slave Girl William Grimes in the, Life of William Grimes the Runaway Slave, and Harriet Jacobs in the, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, both wrote about their lives under the hands of slavery. Though they both experienced hardships, the difference in gender played a role in how their enslavement was endured. These different experiences influenced different tones. In Chapter three of Incidents, Jacobs tone is emotional, hopeless and depressing. She writes But to the slave mother New Year s day comes laden with peculiar sorrows. She sits on her cold cabin floor, watching the children who may all be torn from her the next morning: and often does she wish that she and they might die before the day dawns. The words she uses radiates the devotion between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Grimes targeted anyone willing or curious enough to listen, Jacobs specifically targeted white, Christian women. The tone she used was critical and emotional. The sentence He tried his utmost to corrupt the pure principles my grandmother had instilled. would provoke emotion from female Christian readers, because it goes against their beliefs. She wants her audience to think and fully understand the hardships she faced, therefore she makes her tone critical. She engages the reader by saying, He told me I was his property; that I must subject to his will in all things. My soul revolted against the mean tyranny. But where could I turn to for protection? The sentence is shortly followed up by her stating why she feels trapped. The mistress is of no help to a slave girl, she is jealous and angry with her. This promotes the thoughts and feelings of the slave girl and make the reader criticize themselves. While Grimes on the other hand stayed objective. On page 78, Grimes says after receiving a severe beating, I had before anticipated this, for I knew he could not do without me: all he wanted of me, to set me at liberty, was for me to ask his pardon, and promise never to ask him to sell me again. Even when he endured severe beating and imprisonment he stayed emotionless. Both authors shared their compelling stories about their personal hand in slavery. • 4. The Role Of Women In Raisin In The Sun And Trifles Men and women are constantly debating what their true role in life is. In a family, the women were expected to do the laundry, cook, and clean, while the men went to work and made money for their family. This idea has changed drastically over the years. Women are now able to get an education and work if they d like. Sixty years ago, this would not have been possible. Most men and women now share the housework, and both have full time jobs. In Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Trifles by Susan Glaspell the women struggle with being unheard by their husbands. In Raisin in the Sun, Ruth Younger struggles with her husband, Walter Lee, when he does not listen to her when they discuss their money problems. Walter strives to have more money, so he can provide his family with nice things. He is tired of being overlooked by the white men that he works for and wants to be more like them. Walter hates the job that he has because he must obey a white man. He constantly feels like the women in his life do not listen to his struggles and confides in alcohol instead of speaking with his family about his emotions. Walter Lee constantly belittles his wife saying, that just goes to show you what women understand about the world...nothing will happen for you in this world less you pay somebody off! (Hansberry 81). Again, the women s opinions and thoughts are overlooked by the men in the play. In the end, Walter Lee chooses to do the right thing and becomes the hero. When ... • 5. Meridian Hawk Descriptive Writing Autumn Durbin We Are Meridian There are many things that make up being a Meridian Hawk. You can t just expect to be a Hawk after just a few days. Everybody needs experience of how this school district is special and different from the others. There are many reasons for being proud of this school. All of the teachers are greatly understanding to where they make learning fun, the school field trips are amazing ( we are very grateful), and I am delighted about this new building that they made for us. I feel special because it s as if someone cares about all of the students. Any other school isn t as different as this one. • 6. Ouija Boards Exorcism On a gloomy Tuesday night, a group of teenagers from George Mason University circled around an Ouija board to find out what their final grade from a psychology class, Mystery, Madness, and Murder would be. Soon after, the planchette moved, allowing them to communicate with evil spirits from another dimension. Unfortunately, this communication led them into learning not only their final grade, but also into being haunted by an evil spirit until the end of their lives. This, surprisingly, is a very common practice in the United States. Even the International Exorcists Association (AIE) states that the usage of Ouija boards increased the exorcism practices within the U.S. (cite). According to Patricia Martinelli, in the late 19th century, an interest in spiritualism was strong both in the United States and Europe as people wondered what happened to those who had died (Martinelli, 2009). Considering that the average human life span in that era, its not a surprise that people tried to communicate with dead through several ways. Therefore, instead of being perceived as outside the social norms, talking to dead was pretty common in the 19th century, which encouraged people to search for new ways of contacting the dead. Furthermore, Ouija boards have their roots under this branch of Spiritualism, which is a movement that began in the United States in the late 1840s, and was led by mediums, who claimed to be intermediaries between the living and the dead (McCarthy, 2014). In the 1880s, some curiosity seekers used homemade talking boards to divine answers from spirits whom they assumed to be friendly (Martinelli, 2009). These types of talking boards became very popular, and in 1890, Elijah Bond, Charles Kennard and William H.A. A form of government intervention, an indirect tax, a tax placed on consumption that is considered indirect since households only pay then when they buy a good, affects the energy drinks market outcomes. Pertaining to the diagram above, previous to government intervention, the energy drinks market was allocated purely by the forces of demand and supply1 with market equilibrium at PE (original price) and QE (original quantity). After a tax of €1 per liter was imposed, the equilibrium quantity of energy drinks produced and consumed decreased to Qtax, as the supply curve shifted upwards to Stax . Furthermore, the price paid by consumers increased to Pc from PE and price received by the energy drinks companies decreased to Pp from PE. In addition, consumer expenditure on energy drinks decreased as well. Due to indirect tax, this changed from (d+e+f+g+h) to (b+d+f+g) since consumers are purchasing less of the good as the price increased. Great leaders know how to adapt, and find a way to conquer a specific task or obstacle. There has been an ongoing debate about whether women should have access to combat roles. • 29. Reflection On Education I ve been able to connect my civic engagement work with our discussions in prosem mostly through our conversations about education and the intersection of immigration and education. All of the kids I worked with at Moder Patshala were either immigrants themselves, or were the children of newly arrived immigrants, and with that, they were low income and/or first generation students in the US. This highly overlaps with the presentations we did on education: one intersecting with low income students and the other with English language learners. From these discussions, I ve been able to develop how to better support the students I worked with who were still learning English. The conversations around certain classroom situations and how you should react were really interesting and got me thinking about my strategies for supporting the students I worked with, which was beneficial for my work, the student s education, and our relationship. A lot of times when there is a language barrier, a student will get very frustrated and I was able to think critically about how to more visibility show my patience and encourage the student through the process. In terms of FGLI students, I had never really thought about the importance in verbalizing that I was a FGLI student too. I had always tried to not mention the fact I was from Penn, because I didn t want there to be this power dynamic between the student and I and also between me and the tutors from other schools. • 30. A Little Under A Year A little under a year ago I wrote in this place about an encounter I d had with Barry Sheerman MP and a Virgin Trains snack box on a train travelling from Manchester to London. At the time, what most bothered me about the snack box was its weird appearance: the cardboard printed with photo real wickerwork so as to give the impression it was a sturdy hamper full of wholesome victuals ideal for a leisurely picnic lunch, rather than the flimsy packet of salty and sugary titbits Richard Branson was giving me for my real life meal. I swore at the end of my column that I would keep the hideous snack box for ever to remind me never to eat such toxic pap, but when I was tidying up my office the other day and came upon it looking just as vile with its fake leather luggage tags that read, respectively, Virgin Trains and Follow a Different Train of Thought I did indeed follow a different train of thought: I happen to be going up to Manchester in a couple of days. Why don t I take the snack box with me and, when I get there, eat it? Yes, yes, I know eating the contents of a Virgin Trains snack box at my age looks like giving in to a dreadful taedium vitae, but I liked the idea of negating the entire Sheerman/Branson/snack box cluster fuck by performing this odd little ritual; perhaps, I unreasoned, if I eat it mindfully enough I ll succeed in flipping us all into a parallel universe where Richard Branson doesn t exist, and where the business empire that occupies the same ... Architecture As Space By Peter Goldberger Critical Studies 3 2015 Art Gallery Analysis Rohini Contractor 1430251 Architecture as space by Peter Goldberger discusses the significance of the interior space within architecture as it is where the viewer has a true experience. The feeling when entering a building builds a foundation for the viewers expectations and is most influential to their judgement of the space. With a comparison of a person s reaction to a building from the exterior to the interior, Goldberger explains that an exterior is viewed as a whole and seen in a context however the interior will mould the persons experience with choice of lighting, form and space. His discussion of how space can influence the users movement proves that the architect can directly control the user or even through light determine the mood either with natural lighting or use artificial lighting for something that can be controlled . After reading this text I believe there are many different aspects of the interior that play a significant role in creating an experience for anyone that enters the building. I believe it a responsibility of the architect to create a feel appropriate for the space, in the case of art galleries it should be expressive to invite visitors yet not to detract from the artwork itself. Being a commercial space it should also be suited for an audience of all ages while creating a sense of community. The growth of captives has been gradual in the early stage until the 1960s, and 1970s, when a substantial expansion took place. The growth may be seen as a clear evidence of the demand by corporations and institutions for a greater level of cost efficiency and response to new problems of risk management. The coming of captives brought significant changes in the business environment of risk management and even greater changes are envisaged to occur in the future. The changes captives brought along have affected many including commercial insurers and reinsurers, government bodies, the operation of insurance agents and brokers in the distribution systems for insurance. The effects are felt in the competitive pressure experienced by the traditional insurance market brought about by captive presence, which has brought about important underwriting changes among the commercial insurers. The current method of rate making by commercial insurers is altered significantly because of the growing importance of captive, since current rating classes now tend to be broad, permitting the average insurer to operate in a fairly level and stable rate structure across industries.
