Cultural Considerations Due to the diversity it is becoming more difficult for law enforcement to
know how to handle or have a conversation with citizens of another culture. When dealing with
immigrants law enforcement officers will experience difficulties with communicating with them.
Multicultural is related to several cultures in society, and in many cultures in some societies
educational theory encourages interest instead of mainstream culture. It is very important that law
enforcement understand cultural diversity. It is questionable if Sir Robert Peel, developer of the nine
principles which is said to organize police departments whether or not would work in present day
police activities.

might have a large population of Blacks, Whites, Arabs, Latino or Hispanics, in a particular

administration to make sure in those areas they are represented by that same race or ethnicity. A police

important to expand awareness and understanding of how cultural issues impact systems and

The Economic Boom of the 1920 s Essay
The Economic Boom of the 1920s
After the First World War America was a completely different country. The twenties was a very
unusual time period in American History. The twenties were a time of fun and partying. There are
many reasons why it was called the Roaring Twenties.
Most of the American people were living a great life and were able to afford luxury items, even
though this didn t apply to every one many believed that it was excellent and exciting a time of great
hopes.
In the twenties, industry took a very big step. It nearly doubled. Not only did industry grow so did
science, fads, laws, beliefs, arts, social lives changed, sports and the various different news from
around the globe.

Over 23 million cars were made.
Other scientific things that were invented at the time was freezing to preserve foods, car companies for
example Ford and Chrysler, dry roll film and portable cameras.
There were many reasons for the boom they were: Mass production: Factories around the USA could
use electricity and set up assembly lines and make objects quickly. The cars were made identical to
make them easier to make and so they are cheaper.
America was being paid back loaned that it had lent other countries during the war, on top of this they
were making interest. The banks now had lots of money to lend to people setting up a business or for
people to buy on the margin.
Taxation was kept low and businesses and companies able to keep much of the profit to invest in new
efficient factories that produced goods at a cheaper price.
Advertising also played a part in the boom, these convinced people to buy their items. They
exaggerated. Advertising took place on the Posters, radio newspapers, magazines and cinema, they
encouraged people to buy more and more, and the families had many more items than the rest of the
world. When something new had come along every one had to buy it. It was like competitions
between the Americans To see who could get the better things. Hire purchase was also introduced to
enable people to have consumer goods straight away. It leads to higher

Lethal injection
In this article, it talks how the government carries out executions, not merely to its choice of particular
execution methods. and execution method such as lethal injection that can be humane in theory and
can be carried out by means of flawed or haphazard procedures that create a foreseeable danger of
inflicting severe pain in actual practice. Also, it said in the article that over time in the absence of
adequate safeguards, such a method of execution will inevitably involve the infliction of gratuitous
pain in some executions. The Inflicting gratuitous pain on a subset of condemned prisoners is no more
tolerable than inflicting gratuitous pain on all condemned prisoners. ... Show more content on

To add without a doubt that killing another person is a terrible crime that one can commit. our
government is states that capital punishment is the wright choices because, after all, the criminal did
murder an innocent victim, and therefore should be killed. known as and eye for an eye, and tooth for
a tooth theory. Of course, if we used this system all the time, there would be no need for laws. If
someone hits me, I would hit him/her back. How simple, we can all be primitive again. Also, some
people support capital punishment the fear of being killed is going to stop criminals from murdering.
Also, the cost of the death penalty is really high, the cost of keeping someone in jail for life which will
cost 600,000 per prisoner and just for one person to be put to death is would cost 2.3 million per
prisoner. That is not a logical reason to kill someone then to keep them alive because the cost is three
time less to keep a person alive in jail for life then to kill

My Favorite Experience
My childhood was never something that seemed to be a typical boy s childhood. I never watched
sports as kid since the T.V. channel was dictated by my parents so all we watched were shows like
Law Order, CSI, and Fear Factor. I never learned about cars whatsoever and talking about girls always
perplexed me. I never understood how someone could base their feelings about someone based off
physical appearances, but that could just be because I was very pessimistic and was always very
distant of people in general. Video games are something that I loved to play and was something I
thought would a normal guy thing. While I had played video games, they mainly consisted of
Nintendo games which are generally much more docile than games than what most guys played,
which consisted of first person shooter games such as Halo and Call of Duty. This lead to awkward
moments when trying to have conversations with other guys, especially when I was going into high
school. One hot summer afternoon, one that exemplified the extremes that Kansan weather can
produce, exemplified just how bad these conversations could get. Band camp had started up and we
were learning the basics of marching and practicing the music for our show for that year. After a while
of rehearsing our marching drills, we were told to take a water break to prevent dehydration in the
intense heat. These water breaks also served as a chance for everyone to get to know each other
through idle chit chat. Most people stayed in the

Kant s Powerful Reasoning For Moral Atrocities

Kant s powerful reasoning for moral atrocities.
Kant explains his moral theory, the categorical imperative, in Grounding for the metaphysics of
Morals . In this paper i will argue that Kantian reasoning provides the most powerful understanding of
how to assess and navigate moral dilemmas concerning atrocities when compared to Utilitarianism. In
order to effectively do so, i will be using a case by Bernard Williams. The case by Williams in A
critique of Utilitarianism, is as followed. Jim is in a small South American town where he finds a band
of armed men holding twenty indians hostaged. Pedro, the man in charge, explains that because of
recent protest the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, i will provide an examination of what both utilitarianism and the categorical imperative
would do in this situation; beginning with utilitarianism. In Principles of Morals and Legislation
Jeremy Bentham outlines utilitarianism. The most important feature being the principle of utility,
Bentham believes that pleasure and pain governs all aspect of life, and one must do all they can to
reduce their pain and maximize their pleasure ( Bentham, 7) Bentham Develops the Felicific
calculator in order to quantitatively measure pain and pleasure in any given circumstance. To adhere to
this calculus, one ought to consider if the value of a pleasure or pain will be greater or less according
to: Intensity, duration, certainty, nearness, fecundity, purity, and extent (Bentham, 22). For an example,
in Williams case one must consider the pleasure and pain involved in their ability to be certain of the
outcomes of their actions. If one cannot be sure that they can trust Pedro s promise to let the nineteen
hostages go, then this should be considered in the calculations of the pleasures and pain of the
consequences of their actions. Consequentialism is another key aspect to utilitarianism. An action s
morality is dependent on outcomes only. One s intentions does not really matter. It becomes evidently
clear from running the felicific calculus, consulting the principles of utility and

Qiu Ju
The Story of Qiu Ju (1992), which was directed by Zhang Yimou, depicts a Chinese woman who
questions the notion of filiality and seeks justice for modernity. Filiality is a traditional idea which
regards revering their ancestors, older people, and males as the most important concept. Thus, in that
idea, giving birth is also important because to maintain the family line, patriline, they need their
offspring. In the film, the protagonist, Qiu Ju, travels between the village, the district and the city
several times to make the chief admit his fault of kicking the groin of her husband, Qinglai. Although
the mediation concluded both her husband and the chief are wrong and ordered the chief to pay money
for the husband s injury, what Qiu Ju requires ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film ends with scene that Qiu Ju is standing the road between the village and the city with face of
astonishment, and that emphasizes the transition of China s modernization. China is a developing
country, and in the 1990s there were immense difference between rural areas and modernized areas.
Qiu Ju s complicated position between filiality and modernity casts the audience questions about how
they should progress the modernization. Sometimes modernization destroys the traditional notion,
such as filiality. However, people s perspectives are fully affected by traditional idea and they do have
positive aspects. This is not peculiar to China, so in this developing and globalizing world people
always have to think carefully the positive and negative effects of tradition and

The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test
From what does the self originate? For ages, humans have pondered the nature of their personalities.
Several theories have been presented over the years, One implies that a person s traits are determined
at birth and that one s personality may be ingrained into their very DNA; while another sates that the
environment in which the subject is in affects their characteristics far more than any deep seated traits.
This question, as well as many others, are topics that are brought to exhibition in Tom Wolfe s book
The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test. Set in the late 1960 s, Wolfe tells the true story Ken Kesey and his

Upon Kesey s return to California, he is greeted in high regard as he is being seen as the leader of this

people how to live in the now. Following their return from the seminars, the Pranksters are raided by
the police and cleaned out of all of their drugs. The following media frenzy cause the group to rise to
prominence of the counter culture movement. It was after this that Kesey befriends the Hell s Angels

Prankster s movement is mimicking a new religious movement and even begin to refer to Ken as The

Sheila s Character Developement throughout the course of An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley In this

during world war one, then afterwards attended Cambridge University. As a newspaper essayist and
journalist, he wrote on a variety of subjects, then the publication of The Good Companions in 1929 led

first meets the inspector, she isn t sure what is going on, but appears worried when she asks What
Business? Whats Happening? When Sheila does find out what business the inspector has at the house,
she shows genuine concern exclaiming Oh how horrible! Sheila then proceeds to find out all she can
about the girl. Sheila s attitude towards her father changes to a disgusted one when she finds out that

When the inspector begins questioning her, Sheila appears to feel guilty and says that while she felt

is responsible, and when she moves onto her large speech, she almost breaks down, but just controls
herself. She admits that she was jealous of the fact that the girl looked better in the dress than she did.

Analysis Of Tipping The Velvet By Sarah Waters
Throughout time there has always been a great interest in transvestism perhaps this is due to it being it

The Best Tablets For Drawing
The Best Tablets for Drawing in 2017 Over the years, the appreciation for art has always stayed the
same. We still appreciate Picasso s work. Man indeed doesn t change. But his landscape does. His
tools and his surrounding also have to change to serve him better. An artist is a true observer of life.
As such, he is bound to notice the ever changing quality of life that is more so enhanced by
technology; and then captured by the same technology. The rudimentary drawings of the stone ages
captured life then. Technologically enhanced equipment will help us capture ours. Enter the
technology s provision to modern day art; the drawing tablet. Art supplies have always been generally
expensive. We can confirm the drawing tablet is also not cheap. However, ask any artist today, this
tablet is a necessary tool to keep up with the artistic trends. So what should you be looking for in a

The Adventures Of The Speckled Band
The Adventures of the Speckled Band Essay
The Adventures of the Speckled Band , by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a mysterious story in which a
detective, Sherlock Holmes, investigated the strange happenings that had occurred in
Stoke Moran Manor during 1883 in England. It all began with a woman named Helen Stoner who
visited Sherlock, and his assistant Dr. Watson. Once they listened intently, Helen explained how her
sister Julia died years ago on the eve of her wedding. Helen was frightened for her life, with her own
impending wedding. The mood was anxious while the tone was serious, as Helen s story became
darker. When her sister died, the only clues she left behind before her sudden death were that she saw
a speckled band and heard constant whistles in the night, which Helen heard as well. The evidence had
momentarily led Sherlock to believe that gypsies had murdered her. Helen s stepfather, Dr. Roylott
seemed to be an awfully suspicious character, especially considering his hot temper and background
of committing crimes, including killings; furthermore, there was proof that Dr. Roylott had handled
Helen viciously, leaving marks on her wrist. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson concluded that the
matter was indeed serious; therefore they decided to take action that day by analyzing more clues at
the Manor itself. Nobody was aware of the trouble that lurked outside the front door.

Have Regular Roof Inspections
The best protection is to hire a trained roofing professional to inspect your roof. You or your

What Dreams Are Essay
What Dreams Are
Dreams, we all have them at one time or another, and in one form or another. They can be daydreams,
when we re awake, wishing and hoping for something more (bigger and better) than we already have,
or the way we hope things should and would be. Next there is the wish, this is when there is a strong
desire for a specific thing, a longing for one particular thing. Then there is the nightmare. They are the
dreams that are very disturbing, full of fear and horror. They are often a very scary event played out
while one is asleep, although we do not know we are asleep. Dreams are a sequence of images etc.

A secretion of our thoughts, and through them our thought is purified (Webster s 155). A daydream is a
passive imagination. If we mistake these imaginings for reality, they would be called hallucinations

satisfy hidden wishes. However when one lives only in his daydreams, he may have a serious mental
disorder. The daydreamer may imagine himself as a hero or superstar or a highly successful
businessman. These daydreams are universal and may actually help the person s ambition or creativity.
Wish, a strong desire and longing for a specific thing (Webster s 1336). A wish is to hope for
something with the expectation of it being fulfilled. We continue to hope and wish for things all our

My Experience At The Mall As A Cosmetics Sales Person
As I walked back to my car, I reflected on my experience working at the mall as a cosmetics sales
person. I had more intimacy with shoppers than other sales positions because I was selling them
something personal. I think about the smells of the lotions, perfumes and the colorful palette of
lipsticks. I remember standing behind the counter with my shoes off or sneaking into facial room to
take a quick nap. I hated wearing makeup to promote the products to look pretty but you get into
trouble if you didn t promote the cosmetic line. What does the cosmetic counter represent? British

This made me comfortable and made the interviewees open up. My brief encounter with fieldwork has
always been about art education where I didn t worry about my personal biases. I have always had my
opinion working in the cosmetic department, but to hear another person speak on how they see the job
is worth investigating. People look at mall culture as the shoppers and not the employees. I wish I had
more time to really talk to the women in depth. In the beginning of my project, I worried about how I
was going to enter the mall as an outsider with an unbiased lens. I picked an area that I was too
comfortable to really understand how it would feel to the other side. For example, when I went to the
nail salon to have my nail fix to and to observe another form of beauty, my antennas were already up.
ME: How much to fix my nail? Nail tech: $4 Then she looked again and changed it to $5 and said I
had long nails. ME: You just said $4, which is it $4 or $5. Nail tech: depends on the size. ME: what is
the size difference for the prices. I told her I didn t want a long nail. I sat down and she put on a tip on
my thumbnail and showed me the differences in the cuts. I told her the $4 cut was fine. I asked her did
she use a particular method called the dip method for nails. She said no, just acrylic, I asked her again
to make sure she understood what I was talking about. Surprisingly, she didn t know it

The Age Of Enlightenment
The Age of Enlightenment was a movement of the 18th century that introduced ideas that strayed from
the traditional ideas of the church. In fact, some philosophers rejected Christianity, arguing that it drew
focus away from creating a better life on earth and instead promised people a false after world. Such
ideas were exemplified by philosophers such as Friedrich Schiller, who argued that thought and reason
were superior to one s senses or feelings. Likewise, many intellectual groups valued the individual
conscience and ability to reason over religious inspiration. While religion was being challenged in
Europe, across the Atlantic, the American Revolution rejected the monarch and created way for a
representative government. These ideas are prevalent in and developed in the writings of Jeremy
Bentham. Born in 1748, Bentham was an English philosophe who pushed heavily for social reform. In
1798, he helped form the Thames River Police to prevent theft on the Thames River, and in 1823, he
co founded a liberal publication titled the Westminster Review. Bentham held particularly progressive
and even radical ideas that were generally not presented by other philosophers of the Enlightenment
era. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Barriers And Challenges To Pursue Of Gender Equality
Although gender equality has continued to drastically improve over the years, a glass ceiling still
exists. Recent research continues to illustrate that the barriers that professional females face in today s
society is tremendous. While the barriers and challenges that professional women face is well
documented, it is also critical to evaluate the perceptions of those barriers held by women. In
education, men often hold leadership positions. Statistically, superintendents almost always come
from teaching backgrounds. When the majority of teachers are female, it is intriguing to ask why the
male teaching population tends to be of the select few who ultimately rise to higher leadership
positions. According to Wallace (2015), the proportion of females in the superintendency was 23% in
2012 and increases by only 0.7% annually. This statistic is shocking, as it would take approximately
80 years for females to be proportionately represented in public school leadership. It is critical to
assess the barriers and challenges females face in regards to leadership attainment. There are certainly
internal and external factors that continue to plague this gender discrepancy. Furthermore,
proportional inequities continue to stem from historical contexts ranging from social and cultural
norms to professional networks. Additionally, gender bias and sexism challenges continue to plague
female authority figures. While there are many variables contributing to the shockingly low

Rubber boots manufactured by the old La Crosse Rubber Mill allows us to learn about the behavior of

Shaping La Crosse The La Crosse rubber mills were founded in 1897 on the north side of La Crosse
called Indian Hill at the time. The decision to set headquarters in La Crosse was not a random act by
the owners at all; in fact the location of La Crosse had many advantages that helped the Rubber Mills
become one of most successful industries in the area. The multiple transportation options like railroads
and the river were a big factor. During this time period many rubber mills were located in the eastern
states. The La Crosse location was strategically selected to be in the Midwest, which allowed them to
market their products to western states due to the fact they were the most westerly rubber mill at the
time, yet still close enough for eastern states as well. The La Crosse Rubber Mill s played a big part in
creating La Crosse as it is today with its success and influence. In just a short period of time the mill
had become one of La Crosse s biggest employers, peaking at sales of $108.3 million in 1994. Having

Polygamy in the United States
Polygamy is the practice of having multiple spouses at one time, and has been considered a
controversial social and legal topic in society, gaining attention as a subject in which multiple opinions
are held. As the topic has become a part of mainstream culture through media accounts of polygamist
families by news outlets and reality television, confusion has emerged in reference to its main
characteristics and legitimacy as a form of marriage. However, this kind of marriage is intriguing
because it enters more than two individuals into the union, potentially causing a change in husband
wife dynamics. In particular, polygamy with multiple wives proves to be more common in media
accounts of these relationships. That being said, appreciating this form of marriage, as in any union,
requires an understanding of how the different social players behave and the general interactions of
the husband wife relationships. Likewise, it is important to understand how this type of union
exemplifies the typical United States ideals of marriage. With more information regarding polygamist
marriages, society can better understand its similarities and differences from normative patterns,
ultimately eliminating some of the stigma placed on the husbands and wives of these relationships.
Literature Review Like many social trends, marriage in the United States has changed over time.
Investigation of these trends can aid in the comprehension of the status of marriage in our society,

somehow the European powers dominated these people, forcing them from their land to make it ours.

Americans. In the film The Last of the Mohicans (1920) these two contrasting roles of Native
Americans dominate most of the plot. The fiend is Magua, and the noble savage is Uncas. These two
roles that are shown of Native Americans have some historical ground, but what makes one side good
and the other bad? Is it because that is how society wants to see them? And does the director s
representation of the two sides gain them acceptance in American culture? In the history of America,
Native American tribes often became associated with similar tribes with similar beliefs. This is true of

Public Health Problem Of Childhood Obesity
Public Health Problem There is a giant threat looming over the United States, a catastrophic event of
epidemic proportions which is threatening to capsize the health care system and that epidemic is
childhood obesity. The awareness of this epidemic as a national problem developed in 1999 with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC s) publication of a compilation of yearly state
based maps that indicated the increase in the levels of childhood obesity. There were earlier studies
done by the CDC regarding this epidemic, but the maps gave physical proof of the dramatic increase
for this pressing issue (Dietz, 2015). There have been many studies done in trying to find the root
cause for childhood obesity and all stem back to bad dietary patterns, physical inactivity, and genetics.
Additionally, factors in society that contribute to this detrimental disease is the education and skills
that are taught to children at a young age along with food marketing and promotion for unhealthy
foods. There isn t a demographic group in the United States that has been unaffected by the childhood
obesity epidemic, but there is evidence that supports that some subgroups of the U.S. population are
more prone to the onset of this epidemic and that have been more affected than others. Certain ethnic
minority populations, children from low income families, and children from the southern region in the

people and start playing hide and seek. When the parents tell her to count to 10, she counts up to 3 and

disorder is displayed is when Dory can t remember where her parents are as a result of accidentally

The Middle East State System
Course overview
This course aims to educate students regarding the modern (post 1970) trajectory of US foreign policy
in regards the Middle East, and how such policy has influenced the Middle East state system. Both in
recent history and presently, the US role in the region has been pivotal in shaping the regional system
as well as ensuring the stability of the regional status quo. The various interests that drive US foreign
policy in the region will be examined.
The US, of course, does not implement its foreign policy in a void, and therefore gaining a
background on the regional state and non state actors that the US must grapple with is vital. The
regional dynamics which affected the US position in the region, such as the Arab Spring, also must be
accounted for in any thorough description of the formulation of US policy.
To account for these factors, the course utilizes both a chronological approach to the historical
development of US foreign policy toward the region, as well as including substantial background on
the important regional actors with which the US interacts with. Finally, it includes a select few
readings related to theoretical concepts in International Relations to provide a context for analysis of
policy. All these elements should grant students a well rounded comprehension of the various factors
which influence the Middle East state system and related US foreign policy.
Through this course, students should gain a fuller understanding of the role that the

every single Australian watches free to air television daily.
Walking down the street, you are likely to encounter people of all colours and sexualities. Because of

In the early 1990s, the Communication Law Centre and the Media Entertainment and Arts Allegiance
aka Actors Equity (MEAAA), with some assistance from the Office of Multicultural Affairs began a
campaign to address what they felt was poor record of achievement when it came to the proper
portrayal of cultural diversity in popular television drama. This came after research into the
representation of non English speaking people in Australian television drama. At that time, it was
estimated that less than 2% of available roles were given to performers of culturally diverse
backgrounds and there were no continuing or recurring roles for indigenous performers (May, 2001).
Australian TV networks are failing to represent the people who make up the majority of this country s
population; it being one of the most culturally diverse countries on the planet. One of the main
excuses given by producers and directors when asked why they don t cast ethnic/LGBTQIA actors is
that there are no actors from those two communities who want the job. That is a lie. If you go to any

In Margaret Atwood s Siren Song
Poetry has been defined by many people in numerous ways. Robert Frost puts it perfectly stating A
poem begins in delight, it inclines to the impulse, it assumes a direction with the first line laid down, it
runs a course of lucky events, and ends in a clarification of life... In Margaret Atwood s Siren Song, it
does just that. The speaker portrays the scenery and the siren as danger.
The poem opens with the speaker explaining the siren song as the song that is irresistible and makes
men leap overboard. Sirens were half mythical bird, half woman. From the first line, the reader can
already assume the song is a deception, but we all desire to learn it. The sense to continue onto the
next line or stanza indicates that the classical myth is not average. The colons in lines 2 3 also specify
the sense of anticipation and suspense that will build up.
The speaker lulls you in with the second stanza, creating the possessed feeling the sailors were under.
The speaker goes on to tell of the song that no one knows, because those who jump are dead and some
just do not remember. This enchanting song forces sailors to jump overboard, even though they are
aware of the island filled with beached skulls . The speaker then alludes to how ... Show more content

completely lured in. While we thought we were listening to the Siren talk about her song this whole
time, we were actually listening to her song. And that s kind of how the whole Siren myth works.

Also, the cost of the death penalty is really high, the cost of keeping someone in jail for life which will cost 600,000 per prisoner and just for one person to be put to death is would cost 2.3 million per prisoner. • 7. My Favorite Experience My childhood was never something that seemed to be a typical boy s childhood. I never watched sports as kid since the T.V. channel was dictated by my parents so all we watched were shows like Law Order, CSI, and Fear Factor. I never learned about cars whatsoever and talking about girls always perplexed me. I never understood how someone could base their feelings about someone based off physical appearances, but that could just be because I was very pessimistic and was always very distant of people in general. Video games are something that I loved to play and was something I thought would a normal guy thing. While I had played video games, they mainly consisted of Nintendo games which are generally much more docile than games than what most guys played, which consisted of first person shooter games such as Halo and Call of Duty. This lead to awkward moments when trying to have conversations with other guys, especially when I was going into high school. One hot summer afternoon, one that exemplified the extremes that Kansan weather can produce, exemplified just how bad these conversations could get. Band camp had started up and we were learning the basics of marching and practicing the music for our show for that year. After a while of rehearsing our marching drills, we were told to take a water break to prevent dehydration in the intense heat. These water breaks also served as a chance for everyone to get to know each other through idle chit chat. Most people stayed in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kant explains his moral theory, the categorical imperative, in Grounding for the metaphysics of Morals . In this paper i will argue that Kantian reasoning provides the most powerful understanding of how to assess and navigate moral dilemmas concerning atrocities when compared to Utilitarianism. In order to effectively do so, i will be using a case by Bernard Williams. The case by Williams in A critique of Utilitarianism, is as followed. Furthermore, i will provide an examination of what both utilitarianism and the categorical imperative would do in this situation; beginning with utilitarianism. In Principles of Morals and Legislation Jeremy Bentham outlines utilitarianism. The most important feature being the principle of utility, Bentham believes that pleasure and pain governs all aspect of life, and one must do all they can to reduce their pain and maximize their pleasure ( Bentham, 7) Bentham Develops the Felicific calculator in order to quantitatively measure pain and pleasure in any given circumstance. To adhere to this calculus, one ought to consider if the value of a pleasure or pain will be greater or less according to: Intensity, duration, certainty, nearness, fecundity, purity, and extent (Bentham, 22). For an example, in Williams case one must consider the pleasure and pain involved in their ability to be certain of the outcomes of their actions. If one cannot be sure that they can trust Pedro s promise to let the nineteen hostages go, then this should be considered in the calculations of the pleasures and pain of the consequences of their actions. Consequentialism is another key aspect to utilitarianism. An action s morality is dependent on outcomes only. One s intentions does not really matter. It becomes evidently clear from running the felicific calculus, consulting the principles of utility and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Adventures Of The Speckled Band The Adventures of the Speckled Band Essay The Adventures of the Speckled Band , by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a mysterious story in which a detective, Sherlock Holmes, investigated the strange happenings that had occurred in Stoke Moran Manor during 1883 in England. It all began with a woman named Helen Stoner who visited Sherlock, and his assistant Dr. Watson. Once they listened intently, Helen explained how her sister Julia died years ago on the eve of her wedding. Helen was frightened for her life, with her own impending wedding. The mood was anxious while the tone was serious, as Helen s story became darker. When her sister died, the only clues she left behind before her sudden death were that she saw a speckled band and heard constant whistles in the night, which Helen heard as well. The evidence had momentarily led Sherlock to believe that gypsies had murdered her. Helen s stepfather, Dr. Roylott seemed to be an awfully suspicious character, especially considering his hot temper and background of committing crimes, including killings; furthermore, there was proof that Dr. Roylott had handled Helen viciously, leaving marks on her wrist. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson concluded that the matter was indeed serious; therefore they decided to take action that day by analyzing more clues at the Manor itself. • 25. The Age Of Enlightenment The Age of Enlightenment was a movement of the 18th century that introduced ideas that strayed from the traditional ideas of the church. In fact, some philosophers rejected Christianity, arguing that it drew focus away from creating a better life on earth and instead promised people a false after world. Such ideas were exemplified by philosophers such as Friedrich Schiller, who argued that thought and reason were superior to one s senses or feelings. Likewise, many intellectual groups valued the individual conscience and ability to reason over religious inspiration. While religion was being challenged in Europe, across the Atlantic, the American Revolution rejected the monarch and created way for a representative government. These ideas are prevalent in and developed in the writings of Jeremy Bentham. Born in 1748, Bentham was an English philosophe who pushed heavily for social reform. Recent research continues to illustrate that the barriers that professional females face in today s society is tremendous. While the barriers and challenges that professional women face is well documented, it is also critical to evaluate the perceptions of those barriers held by women. In education, men often hold leadership positions. Statistically, superintendents almost always come from teaching backgrounds. When the majority of teachers are female, it is intriguing to ask why the male teaching population tends to be of the select few who ultimately rise to higher leadership positions. According to Wallace (2015), the proportion of females in the superintendency was 23% in 2012 and increases by only 0.7% annually. This statistic is shocking, as it would take approximately 80 years for females to be proportionately represented in public school leadership. It is critical to assess the barriers and challenges females face in regards to leadership attainment. There are certainly internal and external factors that continue to plague this gender discrepancy. As the topic has become a part of mainstream culture through media accounts of polygamist families by news outlets and reality television, confusion has emerged in reference to its main characteristics and legitimacy as a form of marriage. However, this kind of marriage is intriguing because it enters more than two individuals into the union, potentially causing a change in husband wife dynamics. In particular, polygamy with multiple wives proves to be more common in media accounts of these relationships. That being said, appreciating this form of marriage, as in any union, requires an understanding of how the different social players behave and the general interactions of the husband wife relationships. Likewise, it is important to understand how this type of union exemplifies the typical United States ideals of marriage. With more information regarding polygamist marriages, society can better understand its similarities and differences from normative patterns, ultimately eliminating some of the stigma placed on the husbands and wives of these relationships. Literature Review Like many social trends, marriage in the United States has changed over time. Investigation of these trends can aid in the comprehension of the status of marriage in our society, while also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is even evidence to show that they have been on the American continents for thousands and even tens of thousands of years. Yet, somehow the European powers dominated these people, forcing them from their land to make it ours. In the film The Last of the Mohicans (1920) these two contrasting roles of Native Americans dominate most of the plot. The fiend is Magua, and the noble savage is Uncas. These two roles that are shown of Native Americans have some historical ground, but what makes one side good and the other bad? Is it because that is how society wants to see them? And does the director s representation of the two sides gain them acceptance in American culture? In the history of America, Native American tribes often became associated with similar tribes with similar beliefs. This is true of the two tribes in The Last of the Mohicans. • 33. Public Health Problem Of Childhood Obesity Public Health Problem There is a giant threat looming over the United States, a catastrophic event of epidemic proportions which is threatening to capsize the health care system and that epidemic is childhood obesity. The awareness of this epidemic as a national problem developed in 1999 with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC s) publication of a compilation of yearly state based maps that indicated the increase in the levels of childhood obesity. There were earlier studies done by the CDC regarding this epidemic, but the maps gave physical proof of the dramatic increase for this pressing issue (Dietz, 2015). There have been many studies done in trying to find the root cause for childhood obesity and all stem back to bad dietary patterns, physical inactivity, and genetics. Additionally, factors in society that contribute to this detrimental disease is the education and skills that are taught to children at a young age along with food marketing and promotion for unhealthy foods. There isn t a demographic group in the United States that has been unaffected by the childhood obesity epidemic, but there is evidence that supports that some subgroups of the U.S. population are more prone to the onset of this epidemic and that have been more affected than others. The Middle East State System Course overview This course aims to educate students regarding the modern (post 1970) trajectory of US foreign policy in regards the Middle East, and how such policy has influenced the Middle East state system. Both in recent history and presently, the US role in the region has been pivotal in shaping the regional system as well as ensuring the stability of the regional status quo. The various interests that drive US foreign policy in the region will be examined. The US, of course, does not implement its foreign policy in a void, and therefore gaining a background on the regional state and non state actors that the US must grapple with is vital. The regional dynamics which affected the US position in the region, such as the Arab Spring, also must be accounted for in any thorough description of the formulation of US policy. To account for these factors, the course utilizes both a chronological approach to the historical development of US foreign policy toward the region, as well as including substantial background on the important regional actors with which the US interacts with. Finally, it includes a select few readings related to theoretical concepts in International Relations to provide a context for analysis of policy. This came after research into the representation of non English speaking people in Australian television drama. At that time, it was estimated that less than 2% of available roles were given to performers of culturally diverse backgrounds and there were no continuing or recurring roles for indigenous performers (May, 2001). • 39. In Margaret Atwood s Siren Song Poetry has been defined by many people in numerous ways. Robert Frost puts it perfectly stating A poem begins in delight, it inclines to the impulse, it assumes a direction with the first line laid down, it runs a course of lucky events, and ends in a clarification of life... In Margaret Atwood s Siren Song, it does just that. The speaker portrays the scenery and the siren as danger. The poem opens with the speaker explaining the siren song as the song that is irresistible and makes men leap overboard. Sirens were half mythical bird, half woman. From the first line, the reader can already assume the song is a deception, but we all desire to learn it. The sense to continue onto the next line or stanza indicates that the classical myth is not average. The colons in lines 2 3 also specify the sense of anticipation and suspense that will build up. The speaker lulls you in with the second stanza, creating the possessed feeling the sailors were under. The speaker goes on to tell of the song that no one knows, because those who jump are dead and some just do not remember. The common belief has always been to obey authority at all cost. This act has never been questioned because authority corresponds to the common belief that respecting authority and obeying them will lead you to success in all aspects of life. Obedience is not defined to specific situations and its context can be portrayed in various ways. This statement leaves little doubt that we cannot come up with an accurate definition or reason behind obedience to authority. Essentially there is no gray area between obedience and disobedience. At this point in the essay, Fromm is very close to convincing the reader that obedience is a psychological and physical problem through the various examples in history he has cited.
