Essay Managing Employee Retention and Turnover
Managing Employee Retention and Turnover
Employee retention has always been an important focus for human resource managers. Once a company has invested
time and money to recruit and train a good employee, it is in their own best interest to retain that employee, to further
develop and motivate him so that he continues to provide value to the organization. But, employers must also
recognize and tend to what is in the best interest of their employees, if they intend to keep them. When a company
overlooks the needs of its employees and focuses only on the needs of the organization, turnover often results.
Excessive turnover in an organization is a prime indicator that something is not right in the employee environment.
We will look at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A recent survey by The Society for Human Resource Management ranked tuition reimbursement programs and
vacation/holiday time as the top two retention initiatives being offered by employers. In addition, instant recognition
programs, such as spot bonuses, are being used to reward excellence in performance as it occurs. Such programs give
employees immediate gratification for their efforts rather than delaying it until annual reviews. Also, flexible work
hours and telecommuting programs that allow employees to better balance their work commitments with their family
duties are becoming more common. According to Ceridian Employer Services (2004), 90 percent of companies with
more than 5,000 employees allow telecommuting.... And ... 52 percent of large companies use virtual teams.
Organizations must continually search for innovative ways to retain their best employees. Fortunately, the costs of
these efforts are low in comparison to the high costs of turnover. Turnover of employees can be involuntary or
voluntary. When a company lets go of an employee who has been a bad performer, has violated company policy, or
broken a law it is usually considered involuntary turnover. So are layoffs. More often we speak of turnover in the
context of being voluntary, or the unplanned loss of employees who leave on their own accord, but that the

Dehumanization In The Handmaid s Tale
(ADD HOOK) the Republic of Gilead dehumanizes its citizens by allowing officials to abuse their power while in
their roles. This leads to destroying the order in society. To begin, the Republic of Gilead was formed after the
president of the United States was assassinated; It was after the catastrophe, when they shot the President and
machine gunned the Congress and the army declared a state of emergency (Atwood, 200). This proves that even
before the revolution began that power was being abused and that it was being used to destruct society. In addition to
this, Serena Joy the commander uses her power to gain control over her husband and Offred. Serena Joy arranges for
Offred and Nick to sleep together to remove Offred from their house: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout this novel, Atwood is a prime example of this. This novel widely speaks upon women s rights issues and
problems within their society; this therefore shows the dehumanization of citizens. This is shown when the
constitution had been abolished and the president had been shot. All the female workers are replaced by a male
counterpart. This is shown when she says; When I got to the corner store, the usual woman wasn t there. Instead it
was a man... (Atwood, 202). As Offred continues her recounting of this event she explains that when her credit card
was not working. She then, continues to recount these events and says that calls her work and nobody answers. Her
boss later explains that it is the law that he must fire all female workers: I have to let you go, he said. It s the law, I
have to. I have to let you all go. He said this almost gently as if we were wild animals, frogs he d caught in a jar, as if
he were being humane.... Not fired, he said. Let go (Atwood, 203 204). In the novel firing the female workers
becomes a must and by doing this the government dehumanizes the women in the Republic of Gilead it is inhumane
and misogynistic. This contributes to the destruction of society because, women are a part of society so using radical
tactics to make womens role in society insignificant. Although, this isn t where the sexism ends. Moreover, the
women in this novel only exist in relation to men. Everything a woman does is for a man, if a woman is taking care
of a Handmaid they are only doing it to take care of her so she is able to satisfy the mens needs. She says I am a
national resource. (Atwood, 73) This quotation is seen as misogynistic because Offred is only valued for her fertility
and her ability to have children. This can lead to the destruction of society because, women are a part of Gilead so

Elements Of The Labyrinth
Millhauser Introduction There are few tropes that have endured and evolved as much as the labyrinth. From ancient
to postmodern times, the labyrinth has evolved from a symbol of divine order to an expression of chaos. Because it is
such a flexible symbol, the labyrinth has endured even as the nature of human thought has evolved. This project aims
to explore the labyrinthine elements of American writer Steven Millhauser s short fiction.
The idea of the labyrinth is demonstratively present in Millhauser s short fiction. However, his usage of the labyrinth
is at once the same and different than preceding eras of short fiction. Postmodern short fiction in the 1960 s and 70 s
utilized the labyrinthine to draw attention to its own textuality. The labyrinth was a ... Show more content on

One important characteristic of the labyrinth is its essential interiority. The labyrinth of Greek mythology, built by
Daedalus for King Minos of Crete, had a perplexing and imprisoning interior. The complexity of its interior served its
function: the imprisonment of the Minotaur a half man and half bull creature. In her book The Idea of the Labyrinth,
Penelope Doob traces the evolution of the labyrinth in art, culture and literature from antiquity to the middle ages.
Doob observes that the labyrinth of ancient mythology was so perplexing that its maker, Daedalus, could scarcely
navigate it (Doob, 36). The confusion and imprisoning nature of the mythological labyrinth points to the trope s
inextricable quality: its interior ambages (Doob 66). Likewise, Hermann Kern asserts that the most important feature
of the labyrinth [is]...the negative space of the path formed by those lines which determined the pattern of movement
(Kern 23). Nietzsche, too, observes that the force of the labyrinth is that its meaning resides solely in its interiority

Integration Of Arts And The Arts
Integration of Arts Paper The incorporation of music, movement, and the arts is critical to a young child s learning,
growth and development. Each of these creative arts allow children to make meaningful connections and retain the
information being taught in the classroom. It also allows for children to focus more in the classroom and it improve
their behavior as well. Multiple intelligences also play a role in music, movement, and the arts. By using these
creative arts in the classroom, educators are able to adapt to children s specific learning needs. Music, movement, and
the arts appeal to all five developmental domains, including cognitive, physical, social, emotional, as well as
language development.

Movement in the classroom is vitally important to children s growth and learning as well. Research shows that
exercise and movement through the school day helps facilitate the brain s ability to learn and retain the information
taught during the day. Studies suggest that regular physical activity supports healthy child development by improving
memory, concentration and positive outlook (Wilson, 2014). Kinesthetic learning creates an opportunity for students
to create and construct memories along with connecting, activating, and integrating physical and cognitive responses
to what they are learning. It is proven that movement in the classroom helps support social skills, which is
responsible for connecting to comprehension and critical thinking skills. Moving and exercise in young children gets
the oxygen in their body and brain moving as well. The more oxygen that is moving in the brain and body, the more
learning that will take place. Approximately 90% of the oxygen in our body and brain is stale until we take a deep
breath, yawn, get up or move our bodies. The lack of oxygen results in confusion, lack of focus, and memory
problems. (Benefits of Movement, 2016). Movement and music can be incorporated together in the classroom. Both
are vitally important to young children s health, growth, development, and learning. Movement and music can help
children develop fine and gross motor skills, along with

Essay Hindu Belief of Samsara
Hindu Belief of Samsara
(6)The Hindu belief in samsara, the cycle of life, death, and rebirth includes reincarnation into forms other than
human. It is believed that someone could live many lifetimes before they become a man. Each species is in this
process of samsara until one achieves moksha, union with god Brahma. The Hindu religious goal of moksha is not
salvation, and does not need forgiveness, but detachment from the material world. Though some people might argue
that such a goal with these aspects rejects the natural world as having value, the Hindu goal is to liberate one from the
self, from the illusion of the material world as being separate and individual.

Karma is an important thing when trying to achieve Moksha, it will tell you what you have done as bad things you do
in your life will lead to bad Karma, and so you may be something lower than you are now, e.g. A human could have a
bad life and get Bad karma, and therefore cannot move up to achieve Moksha, yet moves down to become a Dog for
instance. And so if you live a bad life from childhood some Hindus may think that Moksha is just a worthless goal as
they may never be able to achieve. Yet Hindus who may lead life s as Holmen are very likely to have good karma and
are therefore more likely to interpret Moksha in a different way, as they have good karma they will have a more
positive outlook on obtaining Moksha.

increased income and improved standard of living, which is imperative. Public policy in mobilizing financial
resources for agricultural development has not been very effective for a number of reasons. First, there have been no
consistent and effective policies to make private investment in agriculture more attractive due to persistently low
productivity. While this has not induced the necessary industrial growth in the sector to create larger markets for farm
output, it has also curtailed free flow of funds from the private sector. As a result, the bulk of the investment in
agriculture has been from state resources. The proportion of agricultural output in the GDP which was close to 60
percent during the 1960s stagnated below 30 percent for most of the 1970s, although, there has been a reversal of this
negative trend since the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS) was introduced in 2004.

In this assignment I am going to evaluate the distribution systems in delivering goods and services for one of the well
known food sector business and that is ASDA. I am going to look at both the positive and the negative aspects of the
distribution systems used and make recommendations for improvement with justified reasons
Asda gets its products straight from the manufacturers and then sells them directly to the customers they don t need to

They also have a change of suppliers every year. Asda also has a trend that attracts customers that is you save money
everytime this attracts the customers as they will get their shopping done at a lower price than the rival companies
such as Tesco which is also very popular.
● The cost of the distribution system
At Asda the finance department is responsible for paying suppliers on time and ensuring that Asda receives prompt
payment of goods that is due to them. Asda vehicles collect goods from the supplier and deliver to the relevant
distribution centre and this saves Asda the time and money for hiring a third party to deliver the stock. Asda had now
switched to rail for their distribution network. They use 245 new double deck trailers to save over 10 million road
miles every year by doubling the amount they carry in each journey.
ASDA is reducing the cost of transporting goods by using advanced map based transport optimisation software. The
innovative routing and scheduling system from Paragon Software
Systems allow ASDA s logistics experts to model better routes and make more efficient use of its fleet and drivers.
This is forecast to save ASDA between

C.S.Lewis
C.S. Lewis: Christian Apologist
Included in the 10 most influential Christians of the 20th century alongside Karl Barth, Pope John XXIII, Martin
Luther King Jr, and Billy Graham, the Christian History magazine named him the atheist scholar who became an
Anglican, an apologist, and a patron saint of Christians everywhere. He was also dubbed as an apostle to the skeptics
because he resolutely answered frequent objections individuals had when it came to accepting Christ as their Savior
(christianodyssey.com).
Born into a Protestant family in Ireland on November 29, 1898, C.S. Lewis was the son of A.J. Lewis, a solicitor, and
Flora Augusta, a promising mathematician. He bore a lonely and unhappy childhood. Especially crushed by the ...

Everybody possesses an internal sense of moral obligation to realize the difference between right and wrong and
choose to do what is right. Lewis ascertains that the existence of this common moral conscience, can only be the
consequential result from the existence of a god who created all humans. (about.com).
C.S. Lewis disputed for reason based Christianity as opposed to faith based Christianity. This is a questionable
decision on Lewis part because conventional Christianity is indisputably faith based. Lewis principal readers were
supposed to be skeptics and atheists rather than current believers. Skeptics doubt for lack of reason and evidence;
therefore, only reason and evidence is more likely to draw their reconsideration. In his book, Mere Christianity,
Lewis writes: I am not asking anyone to accept Christianity if his best reasoning tells him that the weight of the
evidence is against it. (about.com).
One of Lewis most often quoted statements is from Mere Christianity, where he uses reason and logic to introduce
three possibilities to us (often known as the Lewis trilemma ). According to this trilemma, either Jesus really was God
and intentionally lying, or was not God but reckoned himself to be (which would make him a lunatic). Mere
Christianity goes on to say that the latter likelihood is not consistent with Jesus character and it is, therefore, most
likely that he was being truthful

#3 Affinity. This concept can be visually represented by water and its ability to take the shape of any container. So
when my father introduced me to this concept, my intellectual arrogance dismissed it, seeing no value in creating a
connection with others. However, seeking solace in cold logic and thinking made me a callous individual on the
outside. Thereby depriving me of being able to communicate all of my ideas to others. Despite being around so many

In high school, I felt that a vital part of my education was missing my freshman year since we did not have to take
any social studies class. This made me feel like we had been cheated in some way. So, when I had the choice of
taking college prep World History or Advanced Placement European History the following year, I chose to take AP
because I felt like history should be something challenging that forces one to think and question information. I knew
it would be rigorous, but if history doesn t make you think critically, it carries no meaning. However, the first
semester didn t go well and I failed. Frustrated by this failure and feeling powerless, I dug in my heels the second
semester and began to study more and yet still wasn t getting the answers right. On the night before the AP European
Test, I made one final attempt to atone for my lackluster study skills earlier in the year by reading my textbook cover
to cover. It worked because I passed with a three on the AP exam and felt motivated to do better come eleventh grade.
I no longer stayed up all night or had to read the textbooks cover to cover for AP US History class or AP English
Language and Composition class. Although not my first language, I had an adequate command of the English
language and crafting my words in a unique way. I had been studying U.S. History and so I giggled with glee when I
saw the essay topics, confident I would excel. When I received my test results this past July, I thought to myself, It s

The Kiss Picasso
The artwork I chose for this discussion is Pablo Picasso s oil painting, The Kiss. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga,
Spain in 1881 and passed away on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France. Pablo s love for drawing started at a young age.
His passion was so strong he lost all desire to complete schoolwork. At the age of young age of fourteen, Picasso was
enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona and by sixteen owned his owned studio. Pablo went through
certain periods where he incorporated a specific color that dominated in each of his paintings. From 1901 1904,
Picasso went through his Blue Period while the years of 1905 1907 were called his Rose Period. The Kiss was
produced in 1969 during Picasso s later works and the time where his obsession with couples became evident. This
special oil on canvas painting of a couple can be viewed on display in Paris at the Picasso Museum.

making the male and female the center of attention. Picasso s social angle lies in in the theme of gender and sexuality.
The Kiss reveals a strong sexual tension between an elderly man and a younger woman. This late painting... is an

The Northeast as a Bioregion Currently residing in the state of Vermont the bioregion to which I ve been informally
assigned to is commonly known as the Laurentia bioregion. This assignment of bioregion is widely accepted, but
when looked at more deeply assigning Vermont to the Laurentia bioregion becomes problematic. There are seemingly
an endless number of variables that contribute to the characteristics and attributes that one can choose from to define
their bioregion, yet those characteristics can widely vary even within a singular bioregion. Geologic makeup, weather
patterns, soil type, biologic diversity, political influence, human activity, and the natural processes that occur within
any given bioregion must be considered when analyzing and attempting to assign themselves to a bioregion.
Laurentia as a bioregion is one of the largest bioregions that exist and has a very large degree of characteristics and

Low Carbohydrate Diets
What is a carbohydrate?
A carbohydrate is a member of a large class of natural organic substances. Carbohydrates are in almost everything we
eat, sometimes in very small amounts but often times in substantial quantities. Some examples of common
carbohydrates are sugars, starch and cellulose. Carbohydrates are important because they provide a storage of energy
in our bodies that is quickly accessible. In fact, carbohydrates make up the major source of dietary energy for people
all over the world (Stephen 1995). In addition, carbohydrate intake increases levels of a substance called tryptophan
in the body, which releases serotonin in the brain. Whether this phenomenon affects our hunger and eating habits is ...

The majority of low carb diets are based on the assumption that obesity and most of its related problems are often
(maybe even usually) caused by an insulin problem, not chronic overeating, fat consumption, or refined sugars per se
(http://www.syndicomm.com/lowcarb.html). Therefore, a low carb diet seeks to curb carbohydrate cravings by
lowering overall carbohydrate intake. The philosophy of low carb diets is that when the cravings have subsided, not
only will carbohydrate intake be substantially lower, but food intake in general will decline, resulting in weight loss.
There are many low carb diet plans that are available. Some of the most popular include:

Burial Customs In America Essay
According to an article submitted to the Berkeley Planning Journal, approximately 800,000 gallons of formaldehyde
is buried in the United States every year. To put the amount of this hazardous chemical that Americans use to bury
their people in perspective, it is enough to fill one and a quarter Olympic sized swimming pools each year
(Calderone). Unfortunately, this is only one of the many issues that is hurting the environment and has arised from
modern burials. Because of the negative environmental effects that modern burial customs are causing, Americans
should switch back to natural burials in order to decrease the impact that modern burial practices have left on Earth.

The vital methodological approach for this study is on qualitative intrinsic case study research. It is imperative to note
that even though all parts of the research design are connected, the connections are not inflexible. The rubber band
analogy, as put forward by Maxwell, tries to expound vividly a qualitative design as something that is considerably
flexible but there are constraints caused by different parts one onto another. If these constrains are in anyway
compromised, they may result in the design being ineffective (Maxwell, 2005, p.6).
The qualitative research serves to comprehend and explain on what a participant means (Morrow, 2005). In a more

p. 105). Secondly, interviewing plays a critical role in finding out what is going on another individual?s mind. Patton
goes on to explain that interviewing someone aids in finding out words from their mouths that cannot be (Patton,
2002). Thirdly, Merriam (2002) acknowledges that qualitative interviews culminate in thick descriptions of the
subject matter, which enables readers to make decisions about transferability of study results. Conclusively,
credibility of the findings is increased as a result of the triangulation of information obtained from other (Merriam,
2002; Stake, 1995). Interviewing previous Upward Bound ELL students will allow information to be identified and
retrieved from key informants. These are people who are arguably knowledgeable and whose insights can be of great
importance in helping an observer to comprehend on how and why events have occurred (Patton,

Sweetness and Power Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History
Some of the most brilliant minds have made many unorthodox suggestions. This is the case with Sidney Mintz s
thesis in Sweetness and Power: The Place of Modern History. Mintz s suggestions that industrial capitalism
originated in the Caribbean sugar plantations may seem to contradict the European version of world history fed to
most of the Western world, but is nevertheless supported by substantial evidence. In general, Western education has
conditioned students to believe that everything productive originated in Europe.
Mintz begins by explaining the process of obtaining granular sugar from the liquid extracted from the sugar cane.

Similar to factory workers, cheap labor was used for mass production of commodities to meet the growing demand.
As a result, Mintz completely transformed my ideas on industrial capitalism. As a consumer and lover of sugar, I
have now given a considerable amount of thought to the sugar that I consumed so often. The extent to which the
Caribbean people and land were exploited is unfathomable. When speaking of a plantation , Americans usually think
and refer to the cotton plantations in the South. Even those Americans with roots in the Caribbean are completely
unaware of the exploitation of their land and people. The long term effects of this exploitation led to the
underdevelopment of these Caribbean countries. These effects are still evident today as most of the Caribbean islands
are labeled as Third World Countries .
In addition, Mintz mentions the separation of the production from consumption. The Major consumers of sugar were
not the hard workers on the plantation, but the far removed citizens of England. The plantation workers were not able
to profit from the fruit of

The Dual Meaning Of The Closet
Henry Urbach uncovers the dual meaning of the closet as an architectural container and metaphoric location to mask
sexual identity. As an architectural container, the closet is a place where things are stored. Putting away things that
are not needed or wanted for display. The closet allows a room to look cleaner and less clutter. Centuries ago closets
were mainly wardrobes, how do closets from today s society compare to closet wardrobes that were used years ago?
Typically we say your clothes are in the closet or the towels are in the closet but when people say, Jake has come out
of the closet we don t literally mean he walked out of a closet unit, but he or she has revealed their sexual identity.
This phrase is used because being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The term coming out of the closet is from the 20th century. It is hard for the person to come out with who they really
are. Although the decision to come out is a personal one, disclosure has been facilitated by a variety of institutions
and social movements: The re appropriation of stigmatizing labels, (finding words that are less pejorative to describe
a stigmatized group) advocacy and support groups (a second social phenomenon that facilitates disclosure is the
advocacy and support groups made up of people who are out) and outing (a third phenomenon related to disclosure is
outing). (Corrigan, P .2003) According to Rosario, Schrimshaw, Hunter, Braun (2006), the development of a lesbian,
gay, or bisexual (LGB) sexual identity is a complex and often difficult process. Unlike members of other minority
groups (e.g., ethnic and racial minorities), most LGB individuals are not raised in a community of similar others from
whom they learn about their identity and who reinforce and support that identity. Rather, LGB individuals are often
raised in communities that are either ignorant of or openly hostile toward

The engagement in activities is a very special part of being human. According to (framework), activities are defined
as Actions designed and selected to support the development of performance skills and performance patterns to
enhance occupational engagement (AOTA, 2014, pg. S30). My group and I recently had the honor of completing two
different activities with the life skills students, at the Wyoming Valley West Middle School in Kingston,
Pennsylvania. The activities that we completed with the children were pumpkin painting, and completing a
Halloween mask. The purpose of these activities were to show how an Occupation Therapy practitioner can work
with children who have intellectual and physical disabilities, and understand their emotional and social needs, in a
classroom setting. The environment played a key role in the completion of both activities. According to the OTPH 3
an environment is defined as External physical and social conditions that surround the client and in which the client s
daily life occupations occur (AOTA. 2014, pg. S12). The first major inhibitor regarding the physical environment was
that fact that the children were not placed in their normal classroom. Due to a recent mold issue, the students of the
Wyoming Valley West Middle School were unexpectedly asked to move to the Wyoming Valley West High School.
Since neither the students, nor the teachers were familiar with the classroom, they had a difficult time finding items

The Extract By Junot Diaz Essay
The extract How to Date a Brown Girl by Junot Diaz basically explains a detailed instruction on how to deal with
females of different races. It is filled with gender stereotypes throughout the extract where most of these stereotypes
are not justified. The protagonist would like others to believe that he is a girls man or girls dem sugar according to
Beenie Man. Is he such a girls man if he is worried that a girl would not turn up to a date? Is he a true girls man if he
sees all the possible things that could go wrong during the date?
One would argue that his views and stereotypes are all wrong and race does not determine promiscuity. It is not fair
to say that all white girls are open to explore their sexuality. It is not fair to say that you are guaranteed to get a hand
job from any white girl once you get her alone. One can argue that all his views about women are due to what he
heard and not based on his experience of being a male.
Noting that most main stream pornographic movies are those of white women, maybe the notion that white women
are opened to their sexuality is not too far off. Maybe there is some truth behind this stereotype, and maybe there is
not any truth to it at all.
Within this extract, there are strong elements that suggest various degrees of respectability and reputation, along with
a very small aspect of sexual objectification of women. Today we see the objectification of women in media ever so

Criticism Of Rudyard Kipling
1. Introduction
Deemed nowadays a classical British writer, Rudyard Kipling enjoyed his peak of popularity during the 1890s
(Williams 266). In the course of his prolific literary career, lasting from the 1890s to the 1930s (Hunter 21), Kipling
wrote several novels, numerous poems and more than 250 short stories (Malcolm 114). Beside and to some extent
due to his experiments with different literary genres, he covered diverse topics, devising a variety of characters. Not
unexpectedly, many of his works both lyric and prose have been extensively studied by literary scholars and critics.
For example, one of Kipling s Great War stories Mary Postgate has attracted the attention of such academicians as
Jamie Paris, Peter E. Firchow, Trudi Tate, Kaori Nagai and Harry Ricketts who have addressed the following topics:
civilian war neurosis, women s patriotism, motherhood and even Kipling s attitude towards the Great War.
Taking into consideration the vast literary heritage of Rudyard Kipling, it is unsurprising that not all of his works
have been enjoying equal popularity among specialists. For example, to the knowledge of the author of this paper, the

Analysis Of Esmerelda Santiago s Life
It s hard to say that comparing two individual s lives is an easy task. When looking at my life and Esmerelda Santiago
s life, the sociological imagination could be used to assist in doing that. The following concepts will be used to better
understand the surprising similarities and differences: immigration, doing gender, conformist, double consciousness,
deviance and traditional authority. I will start by analyzing Esmerelda Santiago s life. Following that, I will analyze
my life and will finish with a conclusion that draws out the comparisons and differences of both. To begin, Esmerelda
Santiago and her family immigrated into the United States from Puerto Rico. Immigration means, the movement of
persons into a non native country. At this point in time the family only consisted of Esmerelda, her seven younger
siblings, Mami, Tata, Tío Chico, and Don Julio. After moving around from apartment to apartment, they finally
settled down in Brooklyn, New York. Esmerelda explains that they came to Brooklyn, in search of medical care for
my youngest brother, Raymond, whose toes were nearly severed by a bike chain (Santiago 1998: 3). Mami hoped for
better medical attention for her child than she would have received in Macún, Puerto Rico. Esmerelda also describes
the apartment they currently lived in on McKibbin Street, in New York as, more substantial that any of our houses in
Puerto Rico (Santiago 1998: 6). This shows her level of living back in Puerto Rico was a worse living

Does Virginia have to potential to have residents who live to be 100+?
Mankind has always had an infatuation with the concept of living forever or immortality. We ve had expeditions to
search of the fountain of youth within Florida; as well as Linus Paulin thinking he found the key to immortality
through vitamins, and later dying from same cancer he claimed vitamins cured (Offit, The Vitamin Myth: Why We
Think We Need Supplements. ). Now author and public speaker Dan Buettner found a new lead towards living a
longer, healthier life. Buettner tracked down areas that he dubbed Blue Zone, a geographic area of the world where
people live measurably longer lives, and thinks these areas hold the key to living a longer life. But does Virginia have
potential to hold one of these Blue Zones? No, I don t predict that any community or neighborhood in Virginia could
adopt these lifestyles and or cultures. Most Virginia areas lack a sense of community, aren t too social, practice lazy
habits, and don t typically have a strong green or healthy diet. During this paper I expect to represent that point and

The largest compromise in the U.S. Constitution is known as the Great Compromise. This was a compromise
between two completely different plans on how the U.S. Legislature should be laid out. The framers of the

These differences are why the Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives is called the
lower house. According to the Constitution, to be a member of the Senate a candidate must be at least thirty years of
age, be a citizen of the United States for nine years, and must live in the state at the time elected. To be a member of
the House of Representatives, a candidate must be at least twenty five years of age, must be a citizen of the United
States for seven years, and must live in the state at the time elected. These different requirements support that the
Senate is the upper house because the requirements needed to be in the Senate are stricter than those of the House.
The structures also differ greatly. There are 435 members of the House and only 100 members of the Senate. Because
of this, each individual member s vote in the Senate is worth more than each member of the House. Also a Senator s
term lasts longer than a Representative s term; a Senator s term is six years and a Representative s is two. Because of
this, Senators have more time to make and change legislation. Also if a House member makes changes that voters don
t like, they can be replaced in under two years. In the Senate, however, if negative changes are made, there isn t
anything voters can do for years and they can continue to make changes that are disagreeable to voters. The two
chambers also have different responsibilities and powers that show that the Senate is the upper house. The House has
the power to impeach government officials. They act as a prosecutor . The Senate holds the trials of impeachment and
acts as judge and jury (United States Senate). The Senate acts as the upper house because the House only brings
issues involving impeachment to the attention of the Senate. It is the Senate who actually can impeach officials. The

The Centres For Disease Control Released A Report Essay

On September 24th 2014, the Centres for Disease Control released a report stating the United States of America has
one of the highest infant mortality rates in the developed world, with a rate of 6.1 infant deaths per 1000 live births.
Sarah C P Williams from the John Hopkins University in the United States, published a report for the Stanford
University School of Medicine identifying that that poor infant survival rates in the United States are intrinsically
linked to high rates of preterm births those that occur when a woman is between 22 and 37 weeks pregnant, rather
than the full term of 37 41 weeks.
When a fetus has experienced a gestation period of 37 weeks, it s organ systems are defined mature and are able to

When a fetus experiences a shortened period of gestation, their organ systems are underdeveloped. They do not have
fully formed lungs, their nervous system and brain connection are not established and their senses are still in the
process of maturing. By all accounts, the fetus is fragile and is unprepared to support and sustain life in the extra
uterine environment.

Larynx Essay
Speech production is essentially the structures along the vocal tract that work together to modify the airstream and
this can be greatly affected when someone has cancer of the Larynx. Laryngeal cancer, also known as Laryngeal
Carcinoma, develops as a result of malignant cells that form in the tissues of the larynx and can be potentially life
threatening. The larynx is a frequent site for cancer and accounts for 3 5% of human cancers. The larynx is critical for
speech so anything that affects the larynx will disrupt the natural flow of vocal communication, especially something
as extreme as Laryngeal Cancer. A person who undergoes procedures and surgeries to rid these cancerous cells can
often result in a loss of speech. However, a person may have the opportunity to continue living as normally as
possible with the use of Esophageal Speech. Although a person has to adapt to this new method of speaking, it allows
them to still express themselves with their voice, even after surgery.
The Larynx is located at the trachea and at the base of the tongue, consisting of three main parts known as
Supraglottis, Glottis and Subglottis which all work together to create a properly working Larynx. It separates humans
from other mammals because it is responsible for voice resonance and spoken language. The larynx is essential for
many other bodily functions including swallowing, phonation and respiration. However, the larynx can be broken
down into two primary functions

Palladium Doors, Inc
Identifying the problem: * Palladium Door, Inc wants to increase its sales goal to $12.5 million for 2004 which
represent a 36% increases in sales over projected 2003 year end sales.
* During the planning process, a number of fellow executives had voiced concern over whether distribution approach
used by Palladium Door was appropriate for the expended sales goal. Richard Hawley is the director of sales and
marketing felt that their concerns had merit and should be given careful consideration. Though he had considerable
latitude in devising the distribution strategy, the final choice would have o be consistent with achieving the 2004 sales
goal. His approach and action plan had to be prepared in a relatively short time to permit ... Show more content on

Cons: * This plan had more merit in the long run of three to four years and they need this plan to be applied on this
current year as increasing in its sales goal. * Their idea had merit as a long term distribution policy. * The direct cost
of adding a sales representative was $80,000 per year.

It s about development of a formal exclusive franchise program, since 27 nonexclusive dealers had posted such a
possibility in the last year. Each of these dealers represented a different market, and each of these markets was
considered to have a high potential and be a candidate for the new advertising and promotion program.
Pros: * The company would drop present dealers in their markets and not add new dealers. * The program could be
implemented during the traditionally slow quarter of the upcoming year. (quick implementation) * The franchise
program in these 27 markets could be served by the advertising and promotion program. * The other 50 markets
served by exclusive dealers wouldn t be affected, since the advertising and promotion program was already budgeted
for these dealers. * The remaining 73 markets would also be unaffected except for increased advertising in 23 high
potential markets.
Cons: * Dropping nonexclusive and focusing more on exclusive dealers, as they produced 70% of company sales. *
Losing a part of market.

Simple Epithelial Tissues
Epithelial Tissue:
Epithelial tissues line and cover the organs, capillaries and body cavities within the body. Epithelial tissues can be
broken down into four types: Simple Squamous, Simple Cuboidal, Transitional and Stratified Squamous. Epithelial
tissues are named first by their amount of layers they have, and second by the cell shape.
Simple Epithelial tissues are composed of only one layer of cells, while stratified tissues are composed of more than
one layer of cells. Squamous tissues are flat as compared to cuboidal or cube shaped tissues. The final tissue is called
columnar, and these cells have a column like shape.

Epithelial tissue can be broken down into four types of tissues: simple squamous, simple cuboidal, transitional and
stratifies squamous. While these tissues differ in structure, they work together to complete the main function of
protecting the organs of the body. Connective tissue supports, insulates, and stores energy for the body. Theses tissues
can be broken into four types of tissues: adipose, hyaline cartilage, areolar and bone. These four tissues collaborate to
ensure the proper protection, insulation and energy storage for the organs, bones and muscles of the human body.
Muscle tissue provides the body with movement through the contraction and relaxation of muscles. These tissues can
be further divided into three types of tissues: smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle. Each type of
muscle provides movement for the different parts of the body, including the heart, muscles, bones and the movement
of food and liquids in the digestive tract. Finally, the nervous tissue controls the messages that are sent throughout the

Hippocrates Accomplishments
In ancient medical history, many great people contributed to the development of medicine to what we know today.
Among these people are Hippocrates, a Greek physician and philosopher, Andreas Vesalius, a Belgian physician and
anatomist, and William Harvey, an English physician. Their contributions to medicine formed the foundation for
modern medical science. Even though they all played a significant role in history, they each had their own
achievements. Hippocrates lived from 460 370 BC. Back in his time, people did not have much knowledge about
nature and the human body. Hence they turned their attention to mysterious gods, who give themselves out for being
excessively Religious , in Hippocrates words. The main ways they fended off the diseases ... Show more content on

However, he did not confine himself to Galen s version of anatomy. He noticed the Galen had made many wrong
observations, but because of his fame, nobody dared to question his beliefs. He continued to learn from more
advanced anatomy research, and developed an ambition to redefine and to correct Galen s errors, and to publish his
own anatomy textbook. Unlike other physicians at the time, he performed many dissections by hand. He realized that
Galen never dissected the body of a man who had recently died and that much of Galen s knowledge was obtained by
dissecting apes, with very superficial observations, thus leading to many obvious mistakes even in the apes anatomy.
As such a young doctor, less than 28 years old, Vesalius fully understood that if he ever attempted to challenge Galen
s theory, he would face tremendous pressure from the conservatives, who have sedulously avoided anatomy, and who,
being old men, will be consumed with envy because of correct discoveries of the young, and will be ashamed of
blindly following Galen thus far.
Another important person in comparative anatomy was William Harvey, an English physician. He was the first to
describe completely and in great detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the brain
and body by the heart. In Harvey s view, the heart is the foundation of human life, upon which, all growth depends,

  • 2. Essay Managing Employee Retention and Turnover Managing Employee Retention and Turnover Employee retention has always been an important focus for human resource managers. Once a company has invested time and money to recruit and train a good employee, it is in their own best interest to retain that employee, to further develop and motivate him so that he continues to provide value to the organization. But, employers must also recognize and tend to what is in the best interest of their employees, if they intend to keep them. When a company overlooks the needs of its employees and focuses only on the needs of the organization, turnover often results. Excessive turnover in an organization is a prime indicator that something is not right in the employee environment. We will look at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A recent survey by The Society for Human Resource Management ranked tuition reimbursement programs and vacation/holiday time as the top two retention initiatives being offered by employers. In addition, instant recognition programs, such as spot bonuses, are being used to reward excellence in performance as it occurs. Such programs give employees immediate gratification for their efforts rather than delaying it until annual reviews. Also, flexible work hours and telecommuting programs that allow employees to better balance their work commitments with their family duties are becoming more common. According to Ceridian Employer Services (2004), 90 percent of companies with more than 5,000 employees allow telecommuting.... And ... 52 percent of large companies use virtual teams. Organizations must continually search for innovative ways to retain their best employees. Fortunately, the costs of these efforts are low in comparison to the high costs of turnover. Turnover of employees can be involuntary or voluntary. When a company lets go of an employee who has been a bad performer, has violated company policy, or broken a law it is usually considered involuntary turnover. So are layoffs. More often we speak of turnover in the context of being voluntary, or the unplanned loss of employees who leave on their own accord, but that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dehumanization In The Handmaid s Tale (ADD HOOK) the Republic of Gilead dehumanizes its citizens by allowing officials to abuse their power while in their roles. This leads to destroying the order in society. To begin, the Republic of Gilead was formed after the president of the United States was assassinated; It was after the catastrophe, when they shot the President and machine gunned the Congress and the army declared a state of emergency (Atwood, 200). This proves that even before the revolution began that power was being abused and that it was being used to destruct society. In addition to this, Serena Joy the commander uses her power to gain control over her husband and Offred. Serena Joy arranges for Offred and Nick to sleep together to remove Offred from their house: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout this novel, Atwood is a prime example of this. This novel widely speaks upon women s rights issues and problems within their society; this therefore shows the dehumanization of citizens. This is shown when the constitution had been abolished and the president had been shot. All the female workers are replaced by a male counterpart. This is shown when she says; When I got to the corner store, the usual woman wasn t there. Instead it was a man... (Atwood, 202). As Offred continues her recounting of this event she explains that when her credit card was not working. She then, continues to recount these events and says that calls her work and nobody answers. Her boss later explains that it is the law that he must fire all female workers: I have to let you go, he said. It s the law, I have to. I have to let you all go. He said this almost gently as if we were wild animals, frogs he d caught in a jar, as if he were being humane.... Not fired, he said. Let go (Atwood, 203 204). In the novel firing the female workers becomes a must and by doing this the government dehumanizes the women in the Republic of Gilead it is inhumane and misogynistic. This contributes to the destruction of society because, women are a part of society so using radical tactics to make womens role in society insignificant. Although, this isn t where the sexism ends. Moreover, the women in this novel only exist in relation to men. Everything a woman does is for a man, if a woman is taking care of a Handmaid they are only doing it to take care of her so she is able to satisfy the mens needs. She says I am a national resource. (Atwood, 73) This quotation is seen as misogynistic because Offred is only valued for her fertility and her ability to have children. This can lead to the destruction of society because, women are a part of Gilead so oppressing these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Elements Of The Labyrinth Millhauser Introduction There are few tropes that have endured and evolved as much as the labyrinth. From ancient to postmodern times, the labyrinth has evolved from a symbol of divine order to an expression of chaos. Because it is such a flexible symbol, the labyrinth has endured even as the nature of human thought has evolved. This project aims to explore the labyrinthine elements of American writer Steven Millhauser s short fiction. The idea of the labyrinth is demonstratively present in Millhauser s short fiction. However, his usage of the labyrinth is at once the same and different than preceding eras of short fiction. Postmodern short fiction in the 1960 s and 70 s utilized the labyrinthine to draw attention to its own textuality. The labyrinth was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One important characteristic of the labyrinth is its essential interiority. The labyrinth of Greek mythology, built by Daedalus for King Minos of Crete, had a perplexing and imprisoning interior. The complexity of its interior served its function: the imprisonment of the Minotaur a half man and half bull creature. In her book The Idea of the Labyrinth, Penelope Doob traces the evolution of the labyrinth in art, culture and literature from antiquity to the middle ages. Doob observes that the labyrinth of ancient mythology was so perplexing that its maker, Daedalus, could scarcely navigate it (Doob, 36). The confusion and imprisoning nature of the mythological labyrinth points to the trope s inextricable quality: its interior ambages (Doob 66). Likewise, Hermann Kern asserts that the most important feature of the labyrinth [is]...the negative space of the path formed by those lines which determined the pattern of movement (Kern 23). Nietzsche, too, observes that the force of the labyrinth is that its meaning resides solely in its interiority (Nietzsche ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Movement in the classroom is vitally important to children s growth and learning as well. Research shows that exercise and movement through the school day helps facilitate the brain s ability to learn and retain the information taught during the day. Studies suggest that regular physical activity supports healthy child development by improving memory, concentration and positive outlook (Wilson, 2014). Kinesthetic learning creates an opportunity for students to create and construct memories along with connecting, activating, and integrating physical and cognitive responses to what they are learning. It is proven that movement in the classroom helps support social skills, which is responsible for connecting to comprehension and critical thinking skills. Moving and exercise in young children gets the oxygen in their body and brain moving as well. The more oxygen that is moving in the brain and body, the more learning that will take place. Approximately 90% of the oxygen in our body and brain is stale until we take a deep breath, yawn, get up or move our bodies. The lack of oxygen results in confusion, lack of focus, and memory problems. (Benefits of Movement, 2016). Movement and music can be incorporated together in the classroom. Though some people might argue that such a goal with these aspects rejects the natural world as having value, the Hindu goal is to liberate one from the self, from the illusion of the material world as being separate and individual. 2. And so if you live a bad life from childhood some Hindus may think that Moksha is just a worthless goal as they may never be able to achieve. Public policy in mobilizing financial resources for agricultural development has not been very effective for a number of reasons. First, there have been no consistent and effective policies to make private investment in agriculture more attractive due to persistently low productivity. While this has not induced the necessary industrial growth in the sector to create larger markets for farm output, it has also curtailed free flow of funds from the private sector. Unfortunately, this is only one of the many issues that is hurting the environment and has arised from modern burials. If these constrains are in anyway compromised, they may result in the design being ineffective (Maxwell, 2005, p.6). Beside and to some extent due to his experiments with different literary genres, he covered diverse topics, devising a variety of characters. Not unexpectedly, many of his works both lyric and prose have been extensively studied by literary scholars and critics. For example, one of Kipling s Great War stories Mary Postgate has attracted the attention of such academicians as Jamie Paris, Peter E. Firchow, Trudi Tate, Kaori Nagai and Harry Ricketts who have addressed the following topics: civilian war neurosis, women s patriotism, motherhood and even Kipling s attitude towards the Great War. Taking into consideration the vast literary heritage of Rudyard Kipling, it is unsurprising that not all of his works have been enjoying equal popularity among specialists. For example, to the knowledge of the author of this paper, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 26. Analysis Of Esmerelda Santiago s Life It s hard to say that comparing two individual s lives is an easy task. When looking at my life and Esmerelda Santiago s life, the sociological imagination could be used to assist in doing that. The following concepts will be used to better understand the surprising similarities and differences: immigration, doing gender, conformist, double consciousness, deviance and traditional authority. I will start by analyzing Esmerelda Santiago s life. Following that, I will analyze my life and will finish with a conclusion that draws out the comparisons and differences of both. To begin, Esmerelda Santiago and her family immigrated into the United States from Puerto Rico. Immigration means, the movement of persons into a non native country. At this point in time the family only consisted of Esmerelda, her seven younger siblings, Mami, Tata, Tío Chico, and Don Julio. After moving around from apartment to apartment, they finally settled down in Brooklyn, New York. Esmerelda explains that they came to Brooklyn, in search of medical care for my youngest brother, Raymond, whose toes were nearly severed by a bike chain (Santiago 1998: 3). Mami hoped for better medical attention for her child than she would have received in Macún, Puerto Rico. Esmerelda also describes the apartment they currently lived in on McKibbin Street, in New York as, more substantial that any of our houses in Puerto Rico (Santiago 1998: 6). Buettner tracked down areas that he dubbed Blue Zone, a geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives, and thinks these areas hold the key to living a longer life. But does Virginia have potential to hold one of these Blue Zones? No, I don t predict that any community or neighborhood in Virginia could adopt these lifestyles and or cultures. This was a compromise between two completely different plans on how the U.S. Legislature should be laid out. The framers of the constitution decided on a two chambered Legislature. Because of these differences, the Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives is known as the lower house. These differences are why the Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives is called the lower house. According to the Constitution, to be a member of the Senate a candidate must be at least thirty years of age, be a citizen of the United States for nine years, and must live in the state at the time elected. To be a member of the House of Representatives, a candidate must be at least twenty five years of age, must be a citizen of the United States for seven years, and must live in the state at the time elected. These different requirements support that the Senate is the upper house because the requirements needed to be in the Senate are stricter than those of the House. The structures also differ greatly. There are 435 members of the House and only 100 members of the Senate. Because of this, each individual member s vote in the Senate is worth more than each member of the House. Also a Senator s term lasts longer than a Representative s term; a Senator s term is six years and a Representative s is two. Because of this, Senators have more time to make and change legislation. Also if a House member makes changes that voters don t like, they can be replaced in under two years. In the Senate, however, if negative changes are made, there isn t anything voters can do for years and they can continue to make changes that are disagreeable to voters. The two chambers also have different responsibilities and powers that show that the Senate is the upper house. The House has the power to impeach government officials. They act as a prosecutor . The Senate holds the trials of impeachment and acts as judge and jury (United States Senate). The Senate acts as the upper house because the House only brings issues involving impeachment to the attention of the Senate. It is the Senate who actually can impeach officials. Larynx Essay Speech production is essentially the structures along the vocal tract that work together to modify the airstream and this can be greatly affected when someone has cancer of the Larynx. Laryngeal cancer, also known as Laryngeal Carcinoma, develops as a result of malignant cells that form in the tissues of the larynx and can be potentially life threatening. The larynx is a frequent site for cancer and accounts for 3 5% of human cancers. The larynx is critical for speech so anything that affects the larynx will disrupt the natural flow of vocal communication, especially something as extreme as Laryngeal Cancer. A person who undergoes procedures and surgeries to rid these cancerous cells can often result in a loss of speech. However, a person may have the opportunity to continue living as normally as possible with the use of Esophageal Speech. Although a person has to adapt to this new method of speaking, it allows them to still express themselves with their voice, even after surgery. The Larynx is located at the trachea and at the base of the tongue, consisting of three main parts known as Supraglottis, Glottis and Subglottis which all work together to create a properly working Larynx. Unlike other physicians at the time, he performed many dissections by hand.
