Differences Of Crito By Plato And Leviathan By Hobbes
Theodore Roosevelt once said, justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in
finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong. Justice is a term that
comes from the Latin word jus, which means right. The word justice, according to the Oxford
Dictionary, is defined as just behavior or treatment, quality of being fair and reasonable, and the
administration of the law or authority in maintaining this. There are many concepts linked with the
term, and many different ways it is presented in different cultures and societies. It is believed that
one of the early theorists was none other than the famous Ancient Greek philosopher, Plato. His
work, Crito, is one his most recognized and infamous... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has always lived by the follow the dictates of reason, which is understandable. But Hobbes
explanation of nature of man craving power, Socrates seems to be portraying the opposite. He is
just accepting the fate of execution. Although, when Crito first brought up the plan to escape,
he dismissed it, but with Crito s persuasion, we can see Socrates give escaping a thought. But
then when he goes through the consequences of escaping, he decides that he would rather settle
with the consequences, no matter if it is just or unjust. When Socrates considered escaping
prison with Crito s help and persuasion, we see Hobbes claim of power is what everyone craves
coming into play. By escaping Socrates will be able to gain the freedom and power, while
deserting the injustice he was going to face. But in the end, Crito was not able to coerce
Socrates enough to gain the self justice. Through both of these reading, we see the connection of
Hobbes claim and the story of Socrates. Hobbes says that everyone craves power, and we see that
through Socrates and his enemies, but we can also see the opposite of the claim when Socrates
chooses to stay in prison and face the consequences of execution. There are many situations just
like Socrates faced, in which some are wrongfully punished because others decision and need to
come out on top and stay in

Multicultural Counseling
In the profession of counseling, one must be aware of the copious amounts of cross cultural
relationships that are realistically going to be put into action throughout a competent career. To a
degree, all people come from different backgrounds and it is significant to the counselor to
comprehend and apply the basic foundations of building alliances with any client. There are
different levels of how people from diverse cultures learn to adapt to one another and being able to
build relations can at times need a counselor. Therefore putting cultural competency and acceptance

No matter the individuals circumstances, the person in need of counseling has no particular face,
body, or sexual preference. Despair has no bias. As reported by the United States Census Bureau
(2015), there is over 3 million people in America, and of those people at least eight million adults
identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual (Advocate, 2011). These numbers represent a demand that will
be in our population for counseling, and with that must emerge new and innovative ways of therapy
integration. As we continue to research and discover more about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender
(LGBT), we as counselors will be able to seek out resources, training, and experience when working
across the sex and gender barriers. Although we have an estimate of the population of individuals
who define themselves to be a part of the LGBT community, there are only more individuals who
are feeling confused and are harboring sexual attractions and behaviors within. This knowledge is
imperative to grasp in the counseling profession because many individuals may not feel open
enough to talk about such new controversial issues. A clear understanding of what the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community undergoes is the first step in becoming competent
enough to providing a positive moving cross cultural experience for both client and counselor.
According to AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies, Culturally skilled counselors should
familiarize themselves with relevant research and the latest findings regarding mental health and
mental disorders that affect various ethnic and racial groups. They should actively seek out
educations experiences that enrich their knowledge, understanding and cross cultural skills for
more effective counseling behavior

It can be assured that any type of exercise programme that is performed regularly and is closely

The Phases of Hamlet In Shakespeare s plays, the soliloquies provide the audience with insight into
the moral fiber, disposition and psychological mindset of the characters. This acquired insight
allows the audience to effectively evaluate the play s events and obtain a richer understanding of
the characters. In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, Prince Hamletis a very complex character,
portrayed as a man of radical contradictions, which makes it difficult to pluck out the heart of [his]

As he contemplates, his self hate induces self realization which causes a change from inaction to
action, from apathetic to passionate pursuit of achieving his goals. At this point in the play, all
occasions prompt Hamlet to revenge which cause him to realize that he has been very listless
and hesitant to carry out his plans to avenge his father s murder. He ponders what a human being
is if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? (IV.iv.?). He concludes that a
man who does not have purpose beyond mere existence is a beast, no more (Iv.iv.?) as he is
wasting his God given capacities that aren t meant to remain unused (IV.iv.). By stating this,
Hamlet realizes the beast is a direct reflection of himself as, with a father kill d [and] a mother

result of thinking too precisely on th event (Iv.iv). Along with comparing himself to a beast, he
compares himself to Fortinbras, the delicate and tender prince (Iv.iv), as he sets an example of how
Hamlet should be acting. Unlike Hamlet, the Prince has the divine ambition to face fortune, death,
and danger for something as trivial as an eggshell (Iv.iv) as he resorts immediately to action when
his honour is at stake. Witnessing his strong ambition causes

Literary Devices In Poetry
Literature is never original. In one way or another, one text alludes to a previous text which in
turn alludes to a previous. Common reoccurring allusions are to the Bible, Greek mythology,
Shakespeare, or other writers. Themes such as; faith, childhood, love, and loneliness, are repeated
and expanded upon in a wide variety of ways in all genres of literature but none as unique as poetry.
Poetry is often regarded as one of the more difficult forms of literature, it employs an array of
techniques which allows each poem to express a theme or idea, although reoccurring or clichГ©, in
its own particular light that brings a new perspective to the subject matter. The subject of deathis as
old as time itself. Throughout the years people have expressed many different emotions through
poetry regarding death. In Dylan Thomas Do not go gentle into that good night , John Donne
Death be not proud , and Emily Dickenson s Because I could not stop for Death, it can be
observed the different and similar techniques used to portray like or contrasting ideas of death.
Techniques such as; literary devices, form, and diction, are used to evoke like and different ideas
surrounding the topic of death. In Donne s sonnetDeath be not proud , the overall portrayal of death
is that it is something that is weak and has no control over humans or human nature. Sonnets are set
up in a systematic why that aids in the poem s analysis; Shakespearean sonnets, such as Donne s,

The Documentary Stress Silent Killer
The documentary stress silent killer was not only eye opening, but also enhanced the overall
learning experience. As humans, we have a natural response to stress, and we cannot locate the off
switch in regards to turning off the stress. Most often, we stress for no actual psychological
purpose and we are doing so in a relentless manner. After time goes on the stressresponse turns out
to be more impeding than the stressor itself.
A definitive objective boils down to having the right type of stress because in the event that we do
not involve the right kind of stress there are hazardous outcomes. This can incorporate increased
heart rate, high blood pressure and a weak immune system. There is what we call good stress
otherwise known as eustress and bad stress known as distress. Some good stresses I have

The Current Rating System in the United States
The current content rating system in use for film, the MPAA, is the only content rating system
that is legally enforced in the United States. For this reason, the system has caused controversy.
Many have claimed that the system is unbalanced, as the MPAA bases the level of appropriate
content for all people in the United States off of the opinions of an unidentified council of people
over the age of forty (Jenkins). The stance on how the system s effectiveness is a relative stance,
however, the secondhand effects of the system are obvious and existing today. Decisions have been

This type of butterfly effect that the rating system has on films is evident: the attempt to block off
certain age limits to harsh types of content has ultimately put pressure on artists to limit types of
ways to tell a story in mainstream film. In the interview with filmmaker Kirby Dick on this subject,
the interviewer asks him about the topic of sexuality in film, MPAA s stance on sexuality, and how
Dick represented these ideas presented in his film. Dick stated,
Allison Anders makes the very interesting point that in some ways the ratings system is more
restrictive of sexuality now than it was in the Sixties and Seventies. I think there are a number of
reasons. Perhaps to some degree society has shifted slightly. Film studios were making some
money from films that were more sexually provocative, like Midnight Cowboy. But, then again,
you have to realize that the studios benefit from the system s coming down hard on films,
especially on independent films about adult sexuality. To begin with, who makes those films?
Independents and foreign filmmakers make those films, and that s the studios competition. So they
restrict it. It s not much competition, but it does make a difference. Jt also makes it appear like the
Rating Jioard is doing its job as censors, as raters, doing their job, and doesn t pay attention to the
fact that all these films about violence are slipping through unencumbered by a rating. And the

Slavery In African American Slavery
In the Americas, slavery was based on the plantation, an agricultural enterprise that brought
together large numbers of workers under the control of a single owner. This imbalance magnified
the possibility of slave resistance and made it necessary to police the system rigidly. It encouraged
the creation of a sharp boundary between slaveryand freedom. Labor on slave plantations was far
more demanding than in the household slavery common in Africa, and the death rate among
slaves much higher. In the New World, slavery would come to be associated with race, a concept
that drew a permanent line between whites and blacks. Unlike in Africa, slaves in the Americas
who became free always carried with them in their skin color the mark of bondage... Show more

In the letter, Lincoln emphasized his primary goal: I would save the Union. ...If I could save the
Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if could save it by freeing all the slaves, I
would do it. ...What I do about slavery and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to
save this Union. The Northern victory Lincoln was waiting for to make his announcement of
emancipation was soon coming. On September 17, 1862 Confederate Armies lead by General
Robert E. Lee are halted at Antietam in Maryland by the Union Forces lead by General George B.
McClellan and by night fall 26,000 men are dead, wounded, or missing. The Battle of Antietam is

Dangerous Liaisons Essay
Comparison and Differences of Dangerous Liaisons Novel and Film The film Dangerous Liaison,
directed by Stephen Frears remains just about faithful to the epistolary novel, Dangerous Liaisons,
by Choderlos de Laclos. Stephen Frears does betray the novel towards the end of the film but, it
makes the ending that much more better and enticing. The film represents what the epistolary novel
only hints at us readers. The novel is composed of letters where we only get a sense of the
characters thoughts and emotions. The film tries to put those words into action but only showing
one version of each scene. It is different in which the writer of the novel is using words while the
film maker is using pictures to describe what s happening.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The biggest betrayal the film makes to the novel is the ending. The film ends when Merteuil
goes to the opera to find out she is hated by everyone there, she goes back to her room and it ends
with her removing her makeup, her destiny is left unknown. In the book, she gets a very painful
case of small pox and loses sight in one of her eyes after her letters to Valmont have been
published. When Merteuil removes her makeup at the end of the film, she is wiping away the
surface that made her attractive, her desirability is being wiped away. Her power has been based
on her appearance and her destruction of her face symbolizes her destruction of herself. Merteuil
no longer is the strong feminist she use to be, she is now a weak woman just like Tourvel. I
think the director made a good choice in changing the ending of the film. I was shocked and
somewhat happy to see Merteuil finally get what she deserved. The jaw dropper for me was
when she fell while leaving the opera it symbolized her reputation falling too. Everyone use to
look up to Merteuil and she would control them like puppets and now the roles have been turned.
For me the ending of the movie was a lot more satisfying and jaw dropping. Merteuil tried
everything in her power to win the game of revenge and it back fired on her. Vicomte de Valmont
s character in the novel and film are very faithful to each other. Valmont, who is a

Pathophysiology Of Asthma
Introduction:
Asthma comes from the Greek meaning of short of breath which the world has come to known as
asthma which is shortness of breath. Henry Hyde Salter was the first person to describe asthma in
which he stated: airways narrow due to contraction of their smooth muscle. William Osler known as
the father of medicine described asthma as a spasm of the bronchial muscles, swelling of the
bronchial mucous membrane, the special form of inflammation of the smaller bronchioles, similar
to hay fever, runs in families, begins in childhood and sometimes lasts into old age, can induce a
paroxysm. Asthma was understood about around 1980s when they figured out how the specific
allergen exposure causes a cascade of triggered chemical mediated ... Show more content on

The mucous metaplasia is caused by production and storage of mucins increasing in secretory
cells and club cells. MUC5B and MUC5AC are types of bronchial epithelial cells mRNA which
help mucous clearing and protect against airway infection. This has been thought to be a major
player in airway problems in asthma. IL 13 binding causes mucous metaplasia. This is caused by
the binding of IL 13 which leads to Jak kinases activation and then phosphorylation of transducer
and then STAT6. This STAT6 pathway deals with calcium activated chloride channel one which is
also known as CLCA1 and is the gene related to the airway epithelial cells. In asthma, however,
this channel doesn t function as it normal function which is an ion channel but goes through
secretion and cleavage. This channel can induce MUC5AC through MAP kinase MAPk13. The
inflammation aspect of asthma occurs from a cascade of events usually is a type 2 inflammation
dealing with types of CD4+ T cells like Th2 cells. This pathway deals with a lot of mediators that
cause inflammation, IgE, mucosal surfaces, smooth muscles, and mast cells. When the IgE is
created in the body, it is circulated through the bloodstream.

It is unclear as to how the cover up was perpetrated. The day to day processing of documents
would likely have been completed by lower ranking employees, who may or may not have been

feel that something is wrong. They point the blame for why a certain procedure was followed on

The Pros And Cons Of China And The USSR
Chapter 2
China and the USSR
The Sino Soviet split, occurring during the time 1960 1989, was the decline of political and
ideological relations between the People s Republic of China (PRC) and the Union of Soviet
Socialist Republics (USSR) during the Cold War. China and the USSR were seen as the two largest

In the 1950s and the 1960s, there was an ideological debate between the communist parties of the

The E FM should have communicated to people s feelings to encourage behaviour change to
overcome barriers.
The actual change process should have included a Sense of Urgency . The positive promotion of
in house services, and the expense of contracted services should have been repeatedly and
strenuously broadcast. This would have altered people s behaviour to believe the change was
necessary and beneficial.
A Project Team or Guiding Coalition should have been formed by the E FM, to drive the change
effort.
An improved Vision or change strategy would have helped sell the change with a sense of emotion.
The Vision should have been broadcast in additional formats and regularly re publicised.

Apostles Persecution
Before the glorified Savior ascended into heaven, He told His Apostles to feed my sheep (John
21:16) and teach His gospel to the world. And that is precisely what they did, empowered by
priesthood authority from Christ Himself and with personal testimonies of Christ s Atonement and
Resurrection. They fanned out from the Holy Land, teaching and converting people to Christ s
Church, meeting with great success but also suffering tremendous persecution in the process. The
Apostles first converts were other Jews, and indeed many practices of Christ s church mirrored
some of the Jewish tradition: public worship, a religious calendar, an exclusively male priesthood,
sacred music, viewing the Old Testament as scripture, and practices such as fasting... Show more

Implementing Radio in Somalia Essay
Implementing Radio in Somalia
Implementation of radio technology in helping underdeveloped countries is a cheap and effective
solution in spreading education, health information, and news about local and foreign affairs.
Radio can reach the most people (approximately an area of a 20 km radius) with the least amount of
money, energy and effort. In comparison to Information and Communication Technologies(ICT)
and Internet connectivity, radio management is easily teachable and requires less man hours in
training; Internet technology on the other hand, while perhaps more sophisticated, requires longer
training hours and more expensive equipment. The sophistication of Internet is too advanced for

Success of Radio Technology around the World
Radio has been used successfully around the world to further education and promote health
practices as well as increase knowledge of local and foreign affairs to local villagers of undeveloped
countries.
Education:
Villages and communities in far removed or mountainous regions of countries lack the human and
capital resources that are needed in order to initiate and sustain educational projects; furthermore,
the cost of supplying adequate teachers, sufficient materials, and proper supervision to each
community in need is difficult for many countries to support. However, access to basic skills and
literacy education programs are crucial for improvements in the overall health, environment, and
economic status of the communities and people of those areas. This catch 22 disallows poor
countries to grow; lack of resources and education keep these areas at a low status while rich
countries continue to grow and get richer (once again, following the Gap hypothesis).
RADECO (Interactive Radio Instruction) is an example of radio as a tool to further education.
RADECO provides a valuable education alternative to children not able to attend formal schools.
Education through radio helps local children (as well as adults) who don t have the time to go to
school because they need to work in the fields during the day. RADECO also alleviates costs for

Maxine Hong Kingston s `` No Name Woman ``
Being an author of several praised works, Maxine Hong Kingston has been deemed a noteworthy
American writer since her first book debuted. Her unique style and interesting blend of myth and
truth in memoir form garnered her international attention and won her several awards. Kingston s
works have put heavy emphasis on her familyhistory and her experiences as a Chinese American,
so it is no surprise that she has been received well by many and misunderstood by others at the
same time. A discussion on one of her most popular works, No Name Woman , and a look at the
different ways Kingston s works have been interpreted should reveal how literature can have
different meanings depending on what one is looking for.
Kingston was born in October of 1940 in the Californian city of Stockton and since her parents were
Chinese emigrants to the United States, Kingston became a first generation Chinese American (

Kingston s parents, as her father went from teaching to working in a gambling house and her
mother went from being a doctor to a stay at home mom raising six children (Baym 1567). After
attending the University of California in Berkeley and graduating in 1962, Kingston spent many
years teaching through various jobs before getting published in 1976 ( Maxine Hong Kingston ).

Our study shows that EU deregulation altered the five competitive forces in European airline
industry and in turn this fostered entrepreneurship and innovation, as a reaction of firms to adapt to
the change in their context. The reaction of Ryanair and SAS through entrepreneurial and
innovative behaviour was different due to the differences in their business model. We argue that the
removal of barriers to new entrants and the increased rivalry between firms were the main forces
that fostered entrepreneurship and innovation. We predict that if further EU deregulation comes (as
it is the trend) this will generate more opportunities to entrepreneurship and innovation like it
generated in the past.

Social Media And Identity Analysis
Judaism takes the universal community concept all the way to help foster an identity and purpose
by emphasizing the need to stick with the community throughout life and public identify yourself
with them even if your belief wanes. The aspect of public identification is vital here because it
reinforces an incredibly deep social bond built out of both a shared, common belief but also
through superficial ethnicity in such a way that they rarely feel alone in situations because of the
ease of being able to identify someone through their clothing and name. This sense of loneliness
and not knowing anyone is another pillar aspect of the strength of social media s strength because
it allows these at risk people easily find the type of person that... Show more content on

Social media may appear to be irrelevant here at first, however social media is actually again at
the core of this issue because social media can often act as a safe haven for those who are socially
ostracized because it connects those who are in similar situations together. This is especially
problematic in terms of both the integrity of identity and purpose as well the person s own future
even if they never discovery their purpose because this new community would both further
confused their sense of identity and purpose but also integrate and validate ideas and values of
others which potentially resulted in their social exile. Christianity s focus on salvation and its
evangelism is absolutely vital to pulling people out and preventing them from ever being trapped
in this echo chamber because the two combined offer those who have been ostracized a way back
even though the rest of society has written them off as failures. This, if successful, brings those
who are most vulnerable or have already fallen victim to social media at varying levels towards
individual development of identity and purpose without the dangers of social media. This
development of identity and purpose is supported by the sense of community brought from the fact
that many of those around you had also suffered but had found salvation through the same means.
However, this may seem to be more of the original problem that contributed to the confusion of
identify and purpose however the Christian community is bound together by a shared forgiveness
of their past misdeeds so as to move on and continue to develop identity and purpose whereas these
types of social media communities are only bound together by a collective,

Public Sphere As A Place Open
I define a public sphere as a place open to all people, where important topics can be discussed,
opinions can be heard, and organization of action can take place. Over the last several years the
social media phenomenon has led to expansion of the public sphere, with Twitter and Facebook
becoming key components of the contemporary public sphere. These expansions of the public
sphere still have several advantages but due to barriers, algorithms, and government
intervention, the social media public sphere is shrinking. In this essay I will be focusing on two
online public spheres, Twitter and Facebook, as journalism has been increasingly moving online
(Hayes, 2013). To begin I will clarify why I believe the contemporary public sphere is entirely
online. Every person in this world belongs to several groups, as groups can be based on
anything; religion, family, class, status, age, gender, occupation race, interest, or geographic
location. As stated by Bernays, these groups teach us to accept a standardized code of social
conduct to which we conform most of the time. Groups shape our opinions on what we see as
important (Bernays, 1928). Due to homophily, which states that we spend most time with like
minded people, many of the people we have strong ties with have the same opinions as us because
they fall into the same groups (Steenson, 2014). Public spheres are spaces that allow people to
come together to identify and discuss societal problems and impact political

Reading, Driving While Stupid, By Dave Barry
Final Paper After reading Driving While Stupid, by Dave Barry, he tells us about some of his
experience with seeing bad drivers. Barry uses many old experiences while being in Miami,
China, Boston, and Argentina. I agree with this statement because in almost every city I been in
the driving was terrible. Everyone, in some way or another, has witnessed people drive very
stupid and reckless. Barry indicated that some drivers use insane driving techniques. These include
driving very fast, failure of the utilization of headlights at night, and having distractions for the
view of the drivers. He says that the drivers do not have a sequence for navigation since some are
involved in phone calls, eating, reading, changing CDs, crowd surface makeup, etc. This is a
common thing for teens and even adults to be distracted behind the wheel. He drove through
various cities where the trafficlaws are constantly being violated. For example, has only one traffic
law, which is No driver may ever be behind any other driver. In his opinion, Miami drivers are the
worst drivers that he has ever witness because of the guy who was driving on 1 95. He was
watching videos on his phone and was clearly not paying attention to the road or any other drivers.
This does not only affect him but also the other people around him. He was not be cautious of the

Marc Anthony s Performance Of God Bless America
At the 2013 MLB All Star game Marco Antonio MuГ±iz, who goes by the artistic name of Marc
Anthony, sang God Bless America for the audience. The live performance found its way to
YouTube and became accessible to those who were not there to watch the performance live or
through television. This made it easier for the performance to receive more negative, racist, and
discriminatory responses through social mediums, particularly twitter, and eventually became a
controversial topic among news sources and media. In this essay, I will analyze responses to Marc
Anthony s performance of God Bless America published on Twitter and define what it truly means
to be American. This incident was one of many incidents in the United Statesthat incited
controversy over whether or not a famous figure s actions were truly American. Another incident
involved Cuban born baseball player Yoenis CГ©spedes, when he spoke in Spanish during an

baseball fans took to twitter to express their anger, betrayal, and disgust over MuГ±iz and

of the comments made on social made, we need to understand the intended message of the artifact.

Why Are We Dreaming Research Paper
Why do we dream? I see dreaming as benefiting humans by helping our conscious and
subconscious minds shake hands and come to an agreement, so to speak. Our brains operate on
conscious, subconscious and unconscious levels, and I believe there is a strong link between our
subconscious minds and our dreams. Perhaps the information we store in our subconscious minds
during waking hours manifest into these hallucinatory pictures while we sleep. The part of our
brain which operates on a conscious level is significantly diminished when we are asleep, which
gives the subconscious part of our brain more energy to process what it s learned or stored.
When the lights go out, Subconscious Brain raises the curtain and puts on a weird show while
Conscious Brain sits quietly in the audience. Subconscious Brain is like, Finally! I ve been

There is no part of the brain that is totally inactive during dream state, but of course some parts of
the brain are more active than others. One particularly active area of the brain during REM sleep
is the limbic system, which includes the hippocampus and the amygdala. This area of the brain is
involved in processing emotions and fear, among other things. The prefrontal cortex shows low
activity during REM sleep, which is responsible for logical reasoning and self control. During
dreams, the brain allows the controlling side of the brain to give way to the more primitive, less
rational way of thinking, which is better known as the Activation Synthesis Model of dreaming. The
brain synthesizes and interprets this internal activity and attempts to find meaning in these signals,
which results in dreaming. This model suggests that dreams are a subjective interpretation of
signals generated by the brain during sleep,

Populist Party Research Paper
The Populist party was a third party of the 1890s formed to fight for the rights of working people.
This party was largely made up of farmers. There were several reasons why this party was formed.
By the beginning of the 1880s, millions of farmers had found themselves trapped under the
mountains of debt that they couldn t get out of. There were various causes of why this happened
with these farmers.
One of the reasons why farmers had debts was because of the switch to industrialized farming.
Farmers used new industrial technology to increase the amount of crops that they grew. For

Essay The History of Rock and Roll
Rock music has come a long way since its development in the early 20th century. The genre,
defined as a merger between rhythm blues and country (Scaruffi, The History of Rock
Music:1955 1966), started out more as an underground market, but ended up becoming a
significant aspect of American popular music history. Rock n Roll music produce many
legendary artists who will for ever be known as innovators of the genre. Elvis Presley and Chuck
Berry were some of the many artists in Rock n Roll who will always live on in their music. Many
teenagers were also to identify it due to its rebellious nature their disapproval of the cold war.
Towards the end of the 1950s, Rock n Roll was ending on a particularly bad note, with a brief
decline:

However, the 1960s was considered at a stand still when it came to popular music. In 1964, when
the Beatles arrived to America, everything changed. I think this was the time when Rock n Roll
was truly reborn as Rock music. The changing of Rock and Roll terminology is illustative. Rock
and Roll became simply Rock , connoting its new heaviness (seriousness) (Cary, pg 31) The
oncoming decade allowed for new developments within rock music and as a result, soared in
popularity. The British invasion, a phrase coined by Walter Cronkite while reporting the arrival of
the Beatles in the USA,and American folk singers were the causes of the rapid changes in Rock
music. It was British bands that altered how Rock n Roll was played, and at the the same time
American folk singers were in the process of changing how its audience, particularly the youth,
perceived it.
The United states has always met with great success in exporting their own popular music to
Europe. However, the impact that the Beatles had on our country started the beginning of what
Star and Waterman call an aggressively reciprocal process (Star and Waterman, pg 255). Which is
true because the Beatles s debut on the Ed Sullivan Show was a huge success 73 million
Americans watched their first appearance on the show. After wards, British invasion groups took
America by the storm. The Beatles arrival in America in 1964

Statement Of Purpose For Journalism
Ezra Pound once said that literature is news that stays news. For me, literature is the very essence of

Achilles Leadership
Commanders of armies throughout history and the world have lead their soldiers into battle and
fought alongside them. Often, they are on the front line and put themselves in the same danger as
their soldiers. As a King, Agamemnon had the responsibility to his soldiers to motivate and fight
with them. Although his motivation for honor and victory never changed, his leadership over his
soldiers evolves from self interest to doing what is best for his soldiers.
The story begins with Agamemnon putting his pride before his soldiers needs when he dishonored
Chryses, Apollo s priest. He kidnapped Chryses daughter and when Chryses came with a ransom,
Agamemnon dismissed [him] with a rough speech (1.33), treating Chryses with less respect than a

Why Is The Stonehenge Important
The Stonehenge is a massive stone monument located on a chalky plain north of Salisbury,
England. It was built between 4,000 5,000 years ago and believed to be completed in 3100 BC. It
is made up of two main stones: Sarsens and Bluestones. The sarsen stones are considered the
biggest stones, while the bluestones are referenced as the smallest ones. There are many mysteries
of the Stonehengethat have yet to be revealed. It is a magical and allegorical monument in England.
The surface area of one of the stones used in a Trilithon Horseshoe is 222.87m^2. I found the
surface area using the formula, PH+2B. The volume of the same stone is 8.075m^3. This was
found using the formula, BH. These formulas were used to calculate the surface area and the
volume because the shape of the stone I chose is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are three theories that are thought to be the reason in creating the massive monument. One
theory is that it was used as a sacred burial site. Finds of skeletons and burial mounds and the
existence of a ceremonial route are evidence that it was used as a burial site. Another theory is that
it was used as a site Celestial and Astronomical Alignments. The only evidence to support this
theory is that the timings of the cermonies are significant. Lastly, there is a theory in which the
Stonehenge was used as a place for healing. Many ancient societies argue that the bluestones had
healing properties. Many sacred and significant stones make up the construction of the Stonehenge.
The Trilithon Horseshoe is five sets of stones arranged in a horseshoe shaped pattern. The Slaughter
Stone is a stone in the ground which is regarded as the entrance to the monument. The sun rises next
to the Heel Stone during the summer solstice. The Heel Stone is located along the Avenue, a series
of ditches. Finally, the Alter Stone, located inside the Trilithon Horseshoe, is made up of

The Gray Zone by Primo Levi
The Gray Zone by Primo Levi Summary In the chapter, the gray zone, the author Primo Levi
describes the human relationships inside the Lager. In describing the gray zone, Levi discusses
the different roles of prisoners assigned by the Nazi. The prisoners that did the work were seen
as being more privileged which at the end of the day helped them get more food and live better.
Therefore, the concept of the gray zone is analyzing the difference between the privileged and the
non privileged in the Lager. The difference can be seen by the tasks that the prisoners carried out,
for example, one of the groups were seen as, Low ranking functionaries... sweepers, kettle washers,
night watchmen, bed smoothers... checkers of lice and scabies,... Show more content on

Also he mentions since there were many implications that took part in the lager these events
could have taken place anywhere else in the world. Terrence Des Pres, The Survivor Summary
The Survivor by Terrence Des Pres discusses how prisoners survived in poor living conditions in
the Warsaw Ghetto. He defines a survivor as, ...any man or women striving to keep life and
spirit intact not only those who returned, but the hundreds of thousands who stayed alive
sometimes for years, only to die at the last minute. He describes the experience in the Ghetto
where it was possible to survive with the collective efforts of others, which is the opposite of
how Primo Levi described it. Survivors experienced help from each other such as gifts of food
from friends and family. People were willing to give up their valuables for the better of others.
With these little gestures people felt better and more rich about their experience which helped
lighten the mood in the Ghetto. However, thousands still died every day at Treblinka, a
concentration camp in Poland. At the peak of operations, 15,000 men, women and children died
there each day. Death on that scale took enormous labor, and towards the end, when the SS began
to fear discovery, the mass graves were opened and the rotting bodies burned. The
Sonderkommando, a group of prisoners, were responsible of disposing bodies of other prisoners.
The purpose of surviving till the end was to tell

The Book Control Officer On Ft Riley
As the Book Control Officer on Ft Riley, I am required to issue, receive and train officers and
their lower enlisted soldiers on how to maintain accountability for meal card books; which is a
control item. At one point the Meal Card Control Officer requested that he Meal Card Controllers
be giving a class on how to maintain accountability of control books. While giving the verbal block
of instructions no one asked any question. Once I completed the verbal portion of the class, a
demonstration of the process was also implemented in class. Afterward, I asked were there any
question; no question was asked. Therefore, I assumed that everyone was ready for the hand on a
portion of the class.
Therefore, I pared the soldiers, two by two; one was to issue the card and the other one was to
receive the card. However, they all fail miserably. They assumed that all army s forms are self
explanatory. Therefore, we did it together step by step. Each group was given the military form
(DA Form 4809) the issuer filed out block a, b, d and gave the form to the receiver for signature.
Upon signing the DA Form 4809 and the DD Form 714; which completed that transaction. The
second go around the receiver stated that they lost the card. Therefore, the issuer had to go to the
next line, fill out block c, d, have the receiver sign, make a copy of the DA Form 4809 and close
out the copied form then place it in the inactive folder. The original copy was to go to the next line

Gentrification In The Workplace
My first year living in Pomona was terrifying. Within the first three months, my roommate s car
was stolen inside our apartment complex and was reported at a junkyard.
Keshet Weinstein, a junior Cal Poly student who has been living in a gated Pomona apartment for
six months, had a similar experience as my roommate,
Within the first month of moving in, my car was broken into while in my garage and I heard that
there were 10 bikes stolen, Weinstein said.
Gentrification has become a very broad buzzword. According to Webster dictionary it is described

The Pomona City Hall website released earlier this February that Esparza had a meeting with the
city council.
Esparza wanted a 15 screen theater that would show movies in English, Spanish language, other
foreign or art house fare. Not only would this preserve the Hispanic culture in the area, it would
also spread influence. This would create new job opportunities as construction picks up. This might
even spark more mainstream stores and restaurants to open.
It would make the school more attractive, said Jenny Thai, a senior at Cal Poly Pomona who lived
in Downtown Pomona for a year.
Urbanization is inevitable, whether we want it or not. Opposers are constantly bickering about the
political and moral consequences of gentrification. This topic is indeed mind boggling and
complex. However, there is a need to observe this multi faceted phenomenon in a different angle.

Termite-Hunting Ants Megaponera Analysis
NPR published an article about the termite hunting ants Megaponera analis on April 12th, and I
decided to compare how well their piece summarized the original scientific journal s findings.
Through reading both articles I have come to the conclusion that NPR summary of the scientific
journal is quite vague. The entirety of the NPR article had very little information about the
scientific journals findings. In my opinion there were more deficits in this article rather than
benefits that showed the true scope of the study. I understand that it is aimed at an audience much
different that the scientific journal but I still believe it is far too simplistic. However, there were a
few benefits that helped to capture the original researchjournals findings.
One of these benefits include their inclusion of the information about what type of ant Megaponera
analis is and how these ants march out in the search of food. Another benefit could be how the
article describes how these ants were carrying their own kind as well as termites. Lastly, this article
includes the backstory as who why the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike the article the scientific journal talks about the value of the rescuing behavior, the real
component of hormones, and the focus of the behavior. The article does mention the word

anything else. Within this article, I also see a hint of anthropomorphism when they compare these
ants to something a solider in a war would do. They also talk about the empathy that these ants
may be having for those ants who have been hurt during the hunt. I would also really like to see
the interview that they had with the main researcher because it appears they must have cut a lot of
stuff out. These are just a few of the many problems that I had when comparing these two

Frederick P. Brooks The Mythical Man-Month
In The Mythical Man Month the author, Frederick P. Brooks, Junior, starts off his tale of
software engineering by giving the reader an image of prehistoric creatures programs struggling
for survival against a tar pit. The fact is that programmers and their tools must be perfect in
syntax and in reliability and every day a program is struggling to reach the requirements of
today s standards. He speaks of the skirmishes that surround the creation of a program such as
putting forth time and effort only to discover that someone else has created a similar program,
the possibility of a program becoming obsolete like that of a dinosaur in a tar pit, and the
program s innards and actions must be perfect. However, Brooks gives the reader a positive
insight to programming by comparing it to a child s imagination. He states, He [the programmer]
builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. (7) According to
Brooks, software projects tend to fail when it comes to time rather than runtime errors, finances, or
manpower combined. He states that people tend to have the mindset that more manpower will get a
software project done earlier than intended. In Brooks s opinion, adding more manpower is like

Netflix vs. Blockbuster
Introduction Blockbuster opened in 1985 and in its first 20 years of business, the movie rental
giant opened 9.100 stores in 25 countries (Laudon, 2007, p. 121). Netflix launched in 1998 using a
new business model and became Blockbusters biggest threat. The paradigm shift in the rental
industry from having to travel to a store and rent a movie to being able to have a movie delivered
to your mailbox changed the way people think about media entertainment. The next shift will be
having the technology to download movies and shows directly to a television.
Analysis
Blockbuster and Netflix are using two different information system strategies. Blockbuster, which is
a traditional retail store with a physical location focused on creating ... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
Alternatives One of the biggest information technology hurdles that Blockbuster has to overcome
is the two separate systems dividing the online service and the physical stores. While not as
convenient as being able to order a movie from the comfort of your home and having it upload on
the TV, if Blockbuster integrates the two systems it will be an advantage to the overall strategy.
Microsoft and Netflix have unveiled a partnership under which Netflix will stream movies directly
to consumers through Microsoft s Internet based Xbox Live service (McDougall, 2008). This
strategy goes along with Netflix s original agenda: to increase customer convenience. Anyone who
is a Netflix subscriber and has an Xbox will be able to stream movies in the company library. This
service should launch in the autumn of 2008.
Closing While Blockbuster is trying to remain true to its origins and keep its core competence
of a physical video rental store, the future seems to be in the roles of companies able to cater to
consumer s busy life styles and need for convenience. Netflix, along with Apple and video on
demand, is working to make ordering movies and TV shows as simple and fast as possible.
Blockbuster needs to create a strategy that keeps at the front of the movie rental technology if it
doesn t want to lose customers to the convenience of not having to leave their homes.

  • 2. Differences Of Crito By Plato And Leviathan By Hobbes Theodore Roosevelt once said, justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong. Justice is a term that comes from the Latin word jus, which means right. The word justice, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is defined as just behavior or treatment, quality of being fair and reasonable, and the administration of the law or authority in maintaining this. There are many concepts linked with the term, and many different ways it is presented in different cultures and societies. It is believed that one of the early theorists was none other than the famous Ancient Greek philosopher, Plato. His work, Crito, is one his most recognized and infamous... But Hobbes explanation of nature of man craving power, Socrates seems to be portraying the opposite. He is just accepting the fate of execution. Although, when Crito first brought up the plan to escape, he dismissed it, but with Crito s persuasion, we can see Socrates give escaping a thought. But then when he goes through the consequences of escaping, he decides that he would rather settle with the consequences, no matter if it is just or unjust. When Socrates considered escaping prison with Crito s help and persuasion, we see Hobbes claim of power is what everyone craves coming into play. By escaping Socrates will be able to gain the freedom and power, while deserting the injustice he was going to face. But in the end, Crito was not able to coerce Socrates enough to gain the self justice. Through both of these reading, we see the connection of Hobbes claim and the story of Socrates. Hobbes says that everyone craves power, and we see that through Socrates and his enemies, but we can also see the opposite of the claim when Socrates chooses to stay in prison and face the consequences of execution. There are many situations just like Socrates faced, in which some are wrongfully punished because others decision and need to come out on top and stay in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No matter the individuals circumstances, the person in need of counseling has no particular face, body, or sexual preference. Despair has no bias. As reported by the United States Census Bureau (2015), there is over 3 million people in America, and of those people at least eight million adults identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual (Advocate, 2011). These numbers represent a demand that will be in our population for counseling, and with that must emerge new and innovative ways of therapy integration. As we continue to research and discover more about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), we as counselors will be able to seek out resources, training, and experience when working across the sex and gender barriers. Although we have an estimate of the population of individuals who define themselves to be a part of the LGBT community, there are only more individuals who are feeling confused and are harboring sexual attractions and behaviors within. This knowledge is imperative to grasp in the counseling profession because many individuals may not feel open enough to talk about such new controversial issues. A clear understanding of what the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community undergoes is the first step in becoming competent enough to providing a positive moving cross cultural experience for both client and counselor. According to AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies, Culturally skilled counselors should familiarize themselves with relevant research and the latest findings regarding mental health and mental disorders that affect various ethnic and racial groups. They should actively seek out educations experiences that enrich their knowledge, understanding and cross cultural skills for more effective counseling behavior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Stages Of Hamlet Essay The Phases of Hamlet In Shakespeare s plays, the soliloquies provide the audience with insight into the moral fiber, disposition and psychological mindset of the characters. This acquired insight allows the audience to effectively evaluate the play s events and obtain a richer understanding of the characters. In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, Prince Hamletis a very complex character, portrayed as a man of radical contradictions, which makes it difficult to pluck out the heart of [his] mystery (III.ii.331). At the beginning of the play, the Prince is full of self doubt and meets his father s death with a strong sense of mourning, one which quickly turns into a lust for revenge when he discovers that his father was murdered by his uncle.... As he contemplates, his self hate induces self realization which causes a change from inaction to action, from apathetic to passionate pursuit of achieving his goals. At this point in the play, all occasions prompt Hamlet to revenge which cause him to realize that he has been very listless and hesitant to carry out his plans to avenge his father s murder. He ponders what a human being is if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? (IV.iv.?). He concludes that a man who does not have purpose beyond mere existence is a beast, no more (Iv.iv.?) as he is wasting his God given capacities that aren t meant to remain unused (IV.iv.). By stating this, Hamlet realizes the beast is a direct reflection of himself as, with a father kill d [and] a mother stain d (Iv.iv), he has many reasons to avenge his father s murder, however, he has yet to d it as a result of thinking too precisely on th event (Iv.iv). Along with comparing himself to a beast, he compares himself to Fortinbras, the delicate and tender prince (Iv.iv), as he sets an example of how Hamlet should be acting. Unlike Hamlet, the Prince has the divine ambition to face fortune, death, and danger for something as trivial as an eggshell (Iv.iv) as he resorts immediately to action when his honour is at stake. Common reoccurring allusions are to the Bible, Greek mythology, Shakespeare, or other writers. Themes such as; faith, childhood, love, and loneliness, are repeated and expanded upon in a wide variety of ways in all genres of literature but none as unique as poetry. For this reason, the system has caused controversy. Many have claimed that the system is unbalanced, as the MPAA bases the level of appropriate content for all people in the United States off of the opinions of an unidentified council of people over the age of forty (Jenkins). This type of butterfly effect that the rating system has on films is evident: the attempt to block off certain age limits to harsh types of content has ultimately put pressure on artists to limit types of ways to tell a story in mainstream film. In the interview with filmmaker Kirby Dick on this subject, the interviewer asks him about the topic of sexuality in film, MPAA s stance on sexuality, and how Dick represented these ideas presented in his film. Dick stated, Allison Anders makes the very interesting point that in some ways the ratings system is more restrictive of sexuality now than it was in the Sixties and Seventies. I think there are a number of reasons. Perhaps to some degree society has shifted slightly. Film studios were making some money from films that were more sexually provocative, like Midnight Cowboy. But, then again, you have to realize that the studios benefit from the system s coming down hard on films, especially on independent films about adult sexuality. To begin with, who makes those films? Independents and foreign filmmakers make those films, and that s the studios competition. So they restrict it. It s not much competition, but it does make a difference. When Merteuil removes her makeup at the end of the film, she is wiping away the surface that made her attractive, her desirability is being wiped away. Her power has been based on her appearance and her destruction of her face symbolizes her destruction of herself. Merteuil no longer is the strong feminist she use to be, she is now a weak woman just like Tourvel. I think the director made a good choice in changing the ending of the film. The mucous metaplasia is caused by production and storage of mucins increasing in secretory cells and club cells. MUC5B and MUC5AC are types of bronchial epithelial cells mRNA which help mucous clearing and protect against airway infection. This has been thought to be a major player in airway problems in asthma. IL 13 binding causes mucous metaplasia. This is caused by the binding of IL 13 which leads to Jak kinases activation and then phosphorylation of transducer and then STAT6. This STAT6 pathway deals with calcium activated chloride channel one which is also known as CLCA1 and is the gene related to the airway epithelial cells. In asthma, however, this channel doesn t function as it normal function which is an ion channel but goes through secretion and cleavage. This channel can induce MUC5AC through MAP kinase MAPk13. Success of Radio Technology around the World Radio has been used successfully around the world to further education and promote health practices as well as increase knowledge of local and foreign affairs to local villagers of undeveloped countries. Education: Villages and communities in far removed or mountainous regions of countries lack the human and capital resources that are needed in order to initiate and sustain educational projects; furthermore, the cost of supplying adequate teachers, sufficient materials, and proper supervision to each community in need is difficult for many countries to support. However, access to basic skills and literacy education programs are crucial for improvements in the overall health, environment, and economic status of the communities and people of those areas. This catch 22 disallows poor countries to grow; lack of resources and education keep these areas at a low status while rich countries continue to grow and get richer (once again, following the Gap hypothesis). RADECO (Interactive Radio Instruction) is an example of radio as a tool to further education. RADECO provides a valuable education alternative to children not able to attend formal schools. Education through radio helps local children (as well as adults) who don t have the time to go to school because they need to work in the fields during the day. RADECO also alleviates costs for ... Her unique style and interesting blend of myth and truth in memoir form garnered her international attention and won her several awards. Kingston s works have put heavy emphasis on her familyhistory and her experiences as a Chinese American, so it is no surprise that she has been received well by many and misunderstood by others at the same time. A discussion on one of her most popular works, No Name Woman , and a look at the different ways Kingston s works have been interpreted should reveal how literature can have different meanings depending on what one is looking for. Kingston was born in October of 1940 in the Californian city of Stockton and since her parents were Chinese emigrants to the United States, Kingston became a first generation Chinese American ( Maxine Hong Kingston ). Coming to the United States changed the career situation for both of Kingston s parents, as her father went from teaching to working in a gambling house and her mother went from being a doctor to a stay at home mom raising six children (Baym 1567). The reaction of Ryanair and SAS through entrepreneurial and innovative behaviour was different due to the differences in their business model. We argue that the removal of barriers to new entrants and the increased rivalry between firms were the main forces that fostered entrepreneurship and innovation. We predict that if further EU deregulation comes (as it is the trend) this will generate more opportunities to entrepreneurship and innovation like it generated in the past. Social Media And Identity Analysis Judaism takes the universal community concept all the way to help foster an identity and purpose by emphasizing the need to stick with the community throughout life and public identify yourself with them even if your belief wanes. The aspect of public identification is vital here because it reinforces an incredibly deep social bond built out of both a shared, common belief but also through superficial ethnicity in such a way that they rarely feel alone in situations because of the ease of being able to identify someone through their clothing and name. This sense of loneliness and not knowing anyone is another pillar aspect of the strength of social media s strength because it allows these at risk people easily find the type of person that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social media may appear to be irrelevant here at first, however social media is actually again at the core of this issue because social media can often act as a safe haven for those who are socially ostracized because it connects those who are in similar situations together. This is especially problematic in terms of both the integrity of identity and purpose as well the person s own future even if they never discovery their purpose because this new community would both further confused their sense of identity and purpose but also integrate and validate ideas and values of others which potentially resulted in their social exile. Christianity s focus on salvation and its evangelism is absolutely vital to pulling people out and preventing them from ever being trapped in this echo chamber because the two combined offer those who have been ostracized a way back even though the rest of society has written them off as failures. This, if successful, brings those who are most vulnerable or have already fallen victim to social media at varying levels towards individual development of identity and purpose without the dangers of social media. This development of identity and purpose is supported by the sense of community brought from the fact that many of those around you had also suffered but had found salvation through the same means. However, this may seem to be more of the original problem that contributed to the confusion of identify and purpose however the Christian community is bound together by a shared forgiveness of their past misdeeds so as to move on and continue to develop identity and purpose whereas these types of social media communities are only bound together by a collective, ... Public Sphere As A Place Open I define a public sphere as a place open to all people, where important topics can be discussed, opinions can be heard, and organization of action can take place. Over the last several years the social media phenomenon has led to expansion of the public sphere, with Twitter and Facebook becoming key components of the contemporary public sphere. These expansions of the public sphere still have several advantages but due to barriers, algorithms, and government intervention, the social media public sphere is shrinking. In this essay I will be focusing on two online public spheres, Twitter and Facebook, as journalism has been increasingly moving online (Hayes, 2013). To begin I will clarify why I believe the contemporary public sphere is entirely online. Every person in this world belongs to several groups, as groups can be based on anything; religion, family, class, status, age, gender, occupation race, interest, or geographic location. As stated by Bernays, these groups teach us to accept a standardized code of social conduct to which we conform most of the time. Groups shape our opinions on what we see as important (Bernays, 1928). Due to homophily, which states that we spend most time with like minded people, many of the people we have strong ties with have the same opinions as us because they fall into the same groups (Steenson, 2014). Public spheres are spaces that allow people to come together to identify and discuss societal problems and impact political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Barry uses many old experiences while being in Miami, China, Boston, and Argentina. I agree with this statement because in almost every city I been in the driving was terrible. Everyone, in some way or another, has witnessed people drive very stupid and reckless. Barry indicated that some drivers use insane driving techniques. These include driving very fast, failure of the utilization of headlights at night, and having distractions for the view of the drivers. He says that the drivers do not have a sequence for navigation since some are involved in phone calls, eating, reading, changing CDs, crowd surface makeup, etc. This is a common thing for teens and even adults to be distracted behind the wheel. He drove through various cities where the trafficlaws are constantly being violated. For example, has only one traffic law, which is No driver may ever be behind any other driver. In his opinion, Miami drivers are the worst drivers that he has ever witness because of the guy who was driving on 1 95. He was watching videos on his phone and was clearly not paying attention to the road or any other drivers. This does not only affect him but also the other people around him. This made it easier for the performance to receive more negative, racist, and discriminatory responses through social mediums, particularly twitter, and eventually became a controversial topic among news sources and media. In this essay, I will analyze responses to Marc Anthony s performance of God Bless America published on Twitter and define what it truly means to be American. Our brains operate on conscious, subconscious and unconscious levels, and I believe there is a strong link between our subconscious minds and our dreams. Perhaps the information we store in our subconscious minds during waking hours manifest into these hallucinatory pictures while we sleep. The part of our brain which operates on a conscious level is significantly diminished when we are asleep, which gives the subconscious part of our brain more energy to process what it s learned or stored. When the lights go out, Subconscious Brain raises the curtain and puts on a weird show while Conscious Brain sits quietly in the audience. Subconscious Brain is like, Finally! There were several reasons why this party was formed. By the beginning of the 1880s, millions of farmers had found themselves trapped under the mountains of debt that they couldn t get out of. There were various causes of why this happened with these farmers. One of the reasons why farmers had debts was because of the switch to industrialized farming. Farmers used new industrial technology to increase the amount of crops that they grew. For instance, they started using equipment and supplies for planting such as big tractors and harvesters. Farmers were competing and had to buy these machines in order to produce more crop. To buy these big machines, farmers took out loans from banks. He speaks of the skirmishes that surround the creation of a program such as putting forth time and effort only to discover that someone else has created a similar program, the possibility of a program becoming obsolete like that of a dinosaur in a tar pit, and the program s innards and actions must be perfect. However, Brooks gives the reader a positive insight to programming by comparing it to a child s imagination. He states, He [the programmer] builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. (7) According to Brooks, software projects tend to fail when it comes to time rather than runtime errors, finances, or manpower combined. He states that people tend to have the mindset that more manpower will get a software project done earlier than intended. In Brooks s opinion, adding more manpower is like dousing a... This isn t necessarily about simplicity, but the fact that add ons that appear good but do not integrate with the system are considered unimportant and are left out. If a system is full of good ideas but those ideas are not entirely useful to it then the system is recreated with a different set of ideas. He also goes on to talk about architects and implementers. Architects represent the user s agent or a complete and detailed specification of the user interface. (45) An architect tells what will happen in the system. • 54. Netflix vs. Blockbuster Introduction Blockbuster opened in 1985 and in its first 20 years of business, the movie rental giant opened 9.100 stores in 25 countries (Laudon, 2007, p. 121). Netflix launched in 1998 using a new business model and became Blockbusters biggest threat. The paradigm shift in the rental industry from having to travel to a store and rent a movie to being able to have a movie delivered to your mailbox changed the way people think about media entertainment. The next shift will be having the technology to download movies and shows directly to a television. Analysis Blockbuster and Netflix are using two different information system strategies. Blockbuster, which is a traditional retail store with a physical location focused on creating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alternatives One of the biggest information technology hurdles that Blockbuster has to overcome is the two separate systems dividing the online service and the physical stores. While not as convenient as being able to order a movie from the comfort of your home and having it upload on the TV, if Blockbuster integrates the two systems it will be an advantage to the overall strategy. Microsoft and Netflix have unveiled a partnership under which Netflix will stream movies directly to consumers through Microsoft s Internet based Xbox Live service (McDougall, 2008). This strategy goes along with Netflix s original agenda: to increase customer convenience. Anyone who is a Netflix subscriber and has an Xbox will be able to stream movies in the company library. This service should launch in the autumn of 2008. Closing While Blockbuster is trying to remain true to its origins and keep its core competence of a physical video rental store, the future seems to be in the roles of companies able to cater to consumer s busy life styles and need for convenience. Netflix, along with Apple and video on demand, is working to make ordering movies and TV shows as simple and fast as possible. Blockbuster needs to create a strategy that keeps at the front of the movie rental technology if it doesn t want to lose customers to the convenience of not having to leave their homes.
