ASEAN Integration • Narrowing the Development Gap – Reducing various forms of disparities among and within Member States where some pockets of underdevelopment persist. – Foster regional cooperation – Greater social and economic integration • 6-year IAI workplan to assist countries assuring economic acceleration.
  • 4. ASEAN Integration • Key programme areas in the three Blueprints for the ASEAN Community: – ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint – ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint – ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint • IAI workplans – Infrastructure (transport and energy) – Human resource development (public sector capacity building, labor and employment, and higher education) – Information and communication technologies (ICT) – Regional economic integration (trade in goods and services, customs, standards, and investments) – Tourism and poverty alleviation have also been included
  • 5. Actions • Help companies do business in the region – Opportunity for study and graduate study grants in other countries – Practice teaching in ASEAN countries – Producing educational materials available for international use (assessment tools and references). – Educational research and data gathering in other countries – Education experts as consultants in the ASEAN region – Locals opening international schools and training centers
  • 6. Action • Seamless movement of goods and services will enable productive operations across the ASEAN region – Educational services such as educational and training programs, instructional materials, and assessment can be conducted in other countries. – Filipino teachers can be hired in other countries – Training and education in ASEAN countries – International students and internationally recognized programs
  • 7. Action • Intra-regional tariff reduction – Affordable references, tests, manuals, guides, books, multimedia materials – Easy to send material goods to other countries
  • 8. Action • Trade in goods agreement and Investment – Exchange of services like learning content and ICT platforms – ETS, licensing centers opening a local branch in the Philippines-more work for psychology graduates – Transnational Education opening a branch in the Philippines- opportunities for graduates to get foreign degree.
  • 9. Implications and Needs for Psychology Graduates • Recognition of an ASEAN licensed teachers to practice the education profession in the ASEAN region. – Done for Mechanical Engineers but not for teachers • Some commonalities in the Educational system – Schedule of colleges and universities – Programs with international accreditation – Pathway for students to move from one school a country to another
  • 10. Implications and Needs for Education Graduates • Preparation for the educational setting: – Basic education is now consistent with other countries: K to 12 with American model for the senior high school – College readiness framework – Revised and interdisciplinary GE courses – Global perspective in the curriculum

Research Opportunities • Majority of international journals are submitted online. • Because of the internet and social networking, Filipino researchers can easily collaborate with international researchers in publication (increase in citations). • Filipino authors can be guided by foreign researchers on conceptualizing and writing style (common problems in report writing). • Filipino authors are guided on selecting the right journal for their study.
  • 15. Implications on Research ASEAN Standards • Basis of faulty rankings can include citations rather than volume of publication (author impact factor). • Universities becoming conscious of abstracted and indexed journals. • Balance between research and teaching. • The growing concept of a research faculty. • Universities offering a degree by research.
  • 16. Issues • Access to abstracted and high impact journals. • Need to expose education majors to teach international students. • Need for standards in Teaching Competency in the Asian Region • Keeping up and competing with other education graduates in Asian countries. • What can the Filipino researcher offer to foreign researchers? Educational research capacities and training in Philippines needs improvement
