Spain is a democratic state divided into municipalities, provinces, and 17 autonomous communities, plus two autonomous cities. Each autonomous community has its own parliament, government, and court system and is further divided into provinces, which are geographical regions made up of municipalities. Spain is also a member of the 28-country European Union economic and political association.
