Spain is a democratic parliamentary monarchy that has been a member of the European Union since 1986. The Spanish Constitution established Spain as a democratic state in 1978, dividing power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The Constitution also recognizes the rights and freedoms of Spanish citizens and devolved some powers to 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities.
