Spain is a democratic parliamentary monarchy divided into 17 autonomous communities and two cities. Power resides with the people who freely elect representatives. The Spanish Constitution from 1978 establishes a separation of powers with the legislative power held by Parliament, the executive power held by the Government, and the judicial power exercised by judges. Spain joined the European Union in 1986 and uses the euro currency along with other EU members.
