THE NATURE OF
LEADERSHIP
 Good leaders are made not born. If you have
the desire and willpower, you can become an
effective leader. Good leaders develop
through a never ending process of self-study,
education, training, and experience .This
guide will help you through that process.
To inspire your workers into higher levels
of teamwork, there are certain things you
must be, know, and, do. These do not
come naturally, but are acquired through
continual work and study. Good leaders
are continually working and studying to
improve their leadership skills.
Definition of Leadership
 An activity or set of activities,
observable to others that occurs in a
group organization or institution
involving a leader and followers who
willingly subscribe to common purposes
and work together to achieve them.

 An activity - an influence process – in which
an individual gains that trust and
commitment of others and without reliance
on formal position or authority moves the
group to the accomplishment of one or
more task.

 Leadership is the ability to get to do what
they don’t like to do and like it.

 Leadership involves influencing task
objectives and strategies , influencing
commitment and compliance in task
behavior to achieve these objectives,
influencing group maintenance and
identification and influencing the culture of
an organization.

ATTRIBUTE
 Leadership as a personal quality. But
there are other meanings ; leadership is
also a role in groups and organizations
and when used as a collective noun can
refer to those responsible for the
destiny of a country or a company.
Leadership as a process, we can break the
concept down into its several parts:
 The process involved are such things as
influence, exemplary behavior and
persuasion.
 It involves interaction between actors who
are both leaders and followers.
 The nature of the interaction is affected by
the situation in which it takes place.
 Finally, the process has various outcomes
most obviously the achievement of goals,
but also in intermediate out comes such
as the commitment of individuals to such
goals, the enhancement of group
cohesion and the reinforcement or change
of organizational culture.
COMMONALITES AMONG
LEADERS
 According to Bennis research point to
seven attributes essential to leadership:
 Technical competence: business
literacy and grasp of one’ field;
 Conceptual skill: a facility for abstract or
strategic thinking;
 Track record: a history of archiving
result;
 People skills: an ability to communicate,
motivate, and delegate;
 Taste: an ability to identify and cultivate
talent;
 Judgment: making difficult decisions in a
short time frame with imperfect data;
 Character: the qualities that define who we
are.
THE MYTHS LEADERSHIP
Bennis and Nanus have also identified, through
their extensive research, five commonly
believed myths surrounding leadership:
1. Leadership is a rare skill. untrue. While
great leaders may be rare, everyone has
leadership potential.
2. Leaders are born, not made. Not so. the
truth is that major capacities and
competencies of leadership can be
learned , and we are all capable of learning
given the will to learn.
3. Leaders are charismatic. Some are but
most are not.
4. Leadership exists only at the top of the
organization. In facts, the larger the
organization , the more leadership roles it
is likely to have.
5. The leader controls and directs. Again not
so, Leadership is not so much the
exercise of power as the empowerment of
others.

The nature of leadership

  • 3. THE NATURE OF LEADERSHIP  Good leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience .This guide will help you through that process.
  • 4. To inspire your workers into higher levels of teamwork, there are certain things you must be, know, and, do. These do not come naturally, but are acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their leadership skills.
  • 5. Definition of Leadership  An activity or set of activities, observable to others that occurs in a group organization or institution involving a leader and followers who willingly subscribe to common purposes and work together to achieve them. (professors Kenneth Clark)
  • 6.  An activity - an influence process – in which an individual gains that trust and commitment of others and without reliance on formal position or authority moves the group to the accomplishment of one or more task. (Walter F Ulmer,jr)
  • 7.  Leadership is the ability to get to do what they don’t like to do and like it. (Harry S Truman)
  • 8.  Leadership involves influencing task objectives and strategies , influencing commitment and compliance in task behavior to achieve these objectives, influencing group maintenance and identification and influencing the culture of an organization. (Gay Yuke)
  • 9. PROCESS OR PERSONAL ATTRIBUTE  Leadership as a personal quality. But there are other meanings ; leadership is also a role in groups and organizations and when used as a collective noun can refer to those responsible for the destiny of a country or a company.
  • 10. Leadership as a process, we can break the concept down into its several parts:  The process involved are such things as influence, exemplary behavior and persuasion.  It involves interaction between actors who are both leaders and followers.  The nature of the interaction is affected by the situation in which it takes place.
  • 11.  Finally, the process has various outcomes most obviously the achievement of goals, but also in intermediate out comes such as the commitment of individuals to such goals, the enhancement of group cohesion and the reinforcement or change of organizational culture.
  • 12. COMMONALITES AMONG LEADERS  According to Bennis research point to seven attributes essential to leadership:  Technical competence: business literacy and grasp of one’ field;  Conceptual skill: a facility for abstract or strategic thinking;  Track record: a history of archiving result;
  • 13.  People skills: an ability to communicate, motivate, and delegate;  Taste: an ability to identify and cultivate talent;  Judgment: making difficult decisions in a short time frame with imperfect data;  Character: the qualities that define who we are.
  • 14. THE MYTHS LEADERSHIP Bennis and Nanus have also identified, through their extensive research, five commonly believed myths surrounding leadership: 1. Leadership is a rare skill. untrue. While great leaders may be rare, everyone has leadership potential.
  • 15. 2. Leaders are born, not made. Not so. the truth is that major capacities and competencies of leadership can be learned , and we are all capable of learning given the will to learn. 3. Leaders are charismatic. Some are but most are not.
  • 16. 4. Leadership exists only at the top of the organization. In facts, the larger the organization , the more leadership roles it is likely to have. 5. The leader controls and directs. Again not so, Leadership is not so much the exercise of power as the empowerment of others.
